Indie authors are often drawn by the lure of cutting corners to save time and money, especially when it comes to interior design and layout. Most recently, AI has stepped in to “help,” promising to “format” an entire manuscript with a single prompt.

This may be passable for hobbyists, but if you’re a serious author striving to produce a book that can stand strong side-by-side with titles from major trade publishers, AI falls embarrassingly short.

The Limitations of AI Book Formatting

A machine treats manuscript text as raw data to be poured into a predetermined, common mold, whether it fits or not. AI algorithms rely on rigid, automated math to push text across page breaks.

On the other hand, a professional typesetter evaluates each aspect of the book, carefully placing images at appropriate points in the text and adjusting character, word, and line spacing as needed to ensure the best reading experience. You’ve spent months, perhaps years, pouring your heart into your manuscript. Now, you’re preparing to make the dream of publishing your book a reality, but first you need to turn your manuscript into a market-ready product.

You’re not sure where to start, so you search online and voilà: you stumble on a flashy ad that promises to format your manuscript in five minutes using a “free, automated template.” It sounds like the perfect way to save a few bucks and get your book across the finish line, right?

Wrong.

Professional design is necessary for any serious author. Templates just don’t cut it. Here’s why.

File Setup Flaws: Why Free Book Templates Often Lead to Printer File Rejections

Each printer has specific file requirements that must be met in order for the files to be accepted and print properly. In general, cheap/free templates alone are not enough to ensure the final output will be acceptable to a printer such as IngramSpark or KDP. Among other things, an expert knows what resolution and color profile are needed and can ensure files are embedded with the correct fonts, guarantee proper bleed, and export files in the correct PDF format required by your printer.

Authors who go the DIY route often find themselves stuck in a never-ending cycle of frustrating file rejections and error messages. Authors who choose to ignore the error messages (if given the choice) can usually expect to find drastic text or image misalignment, muddy photos, and other issues that can only be corrected by uploading new files.

Pro Tip: Issues often occur because of problems with files. Other times, however, the issue is on the printer’s end. If your files were professionally produced according to the printer’s requirements and the book still prints incorrectly, you should contact the printer for assistance.

The “Self-Published” Look: How DIY Templates Can Tank Sales

Even if you’re “fortunate” enough that your template-generated files do scrape by at the printers, you’d only be doing your readers, and yourself, a disservice.

A template doesn’t truly design a book; it just dumps your text into a rigid digital mold. There is no human intuition, no finesse. The template won’t know how to fix widows and orphans (dangling words at the top or bottom of a page), adjust kerning (letter spacing) and leading (line spacing) to optimize the presentation, select fonts that pair well with your cover design and work for your genre, craft custom chapter headers, place your images in a way that complements the text, clean up your figures or tables, or take care of the numerous other concerns an expert, human typesetter would.

Technical issues aside, templates don’t collaborate! There’s no back and forth between the designer and author about how to style the text so that the reader’s first impression is a “special” book, instead of a generic product that looks little better than a Word file.

Professional book interior design is an art form that, in many ways, is largely invisible when done right. When an author uses a generic template, readers notice—even if they don’t know the technical terms for why. An unpolished interior layout disrupts the reading experience and screams “amateur,” often leading to poor reviews that can hinder future sales.

This lack of human touch applies to cover design, too. Don’t even get us started on DIY cover templates. It’s great to self-publish, but it isn’t great to LOOK self-published. Your cover is the first impression your book will make on potential customers. If it doesn’t stack up against the bestsellers, no one will even bother clicking.

For many independent authors, Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is the natural starting point, and then they stop there, thinking Amazon distribution is all that matters. However, staying exclusive to Amazon means leaving a massive portion of the market on the table.

There are many popular online and physical retailers outside of Amazon, not to mention libraries. To tap into these potential avenues, you need to “go wide.” IngramSpark’s expanded distribution network provides an excellent and easy solution for authors interested in reaching the widest audience possible.

That doesn’t mean you have to abandon KDP. You can use KDP and IngramSpark together for the best distribution options and highest earnings—KDP for direct Amazon distribution and IngramSpark for expanded. Here’s how to leverage IngramSpark for a wide distribution strategy.

Own Your ISBNs: Control Your Publishing Options

Your first step should be to purchase ISBNs in your name from your country’s official ISBN agency, such as Bowker in the US. Owning your ISBNs ensures you are the publisher of record and gives you complete control over your metadata and where your book is published.

If you initially published with KDP using their free ISBN, that means they are listed as the publisher in their ISBN account (not you). In this case, you won’t be able to go wide until you purchase your own ISBNs.

Get Your Files Right: Professional Book Design

Ingram’s automated pre-media checking system instantly rejects PDFs with incorrect color profiles (RGB instead of CMYK), low-resolution images, or spine widths that miss the mark by a fraction of a millimeter. Hiring experts is essential to avoid frustrating file rejections.

IngramSpark and KDP both have their own cover specs. This means you can’t use the same cover file at both platforms and expect it to print well or be accepted. You’ll need a separate cover for IngramSpark, built to their specifications.

This may lead to a small file adjustment charge depending on who you’re working with, but for authors who want to reach the most readers, the additional charge is worth the greater sale potential.

You might need a separate eBook file, as well, depending on the format. At 1106 Design, we provide a standard ePub that can be uploaded to IngramSpark, as well as an ePub coded specifically for Amazon.

Fortunately, as long as your print interior PDF file is set up properly for POD, you can use the same interior at both platforms.

Optimizing Book Metadata for Expanded Distribution

Proper metadata is the key to helping the right readers find your book. IngramSpark distributes globally, and their metadata includes sections that KDP’s does not. We’ll briefly dive into a few notable differences below.

BISAC Categories

Whereas KDP has their own Amazon category names, IngramSpark uses US industry-standard BISAC codes. BISAC stands for Book Industry Standards and Communications. BISAC categories provide a structure for organizing books based on their content, making it easier to find and browse books based on specific genres or topics. Our BISAC category guide provides more information, including advice for making your selection.

Thema Subject and Qualifier Codes

In addition to using BISAC categories, you should use Thema subject and qualifier codes to help make your book more discoverable in the global market. This IngramSpark article about Thema codes offers additional insight and advice to make the most of them.

Wholesale Discounts

IngramSpark allows authors to set a wholesale discount between 40% and 55% for print books.

The minimum 40% discount works fine for authors who wish to solely focus on online retailers. A 55% wholesale discount is recommended for authors who want a chance to appear in physical bookstores (note that it only helps with eligibility; retailers choose what books to stock). A higher discount gives the retailer room to make a profit, but it cuts into your earnings.

Book Return Policies

IngramSpark allows you to choose your return policy. You can read the breakdown of how these rules impact your bottom line in IngramSpark’s return policy guide. In short, there are three options:

• No/Non-Returnable: You can choose not to allow returns. This can potentially save you money, but most physical bookstores require books to be returnable.

• Yes—Deliver: You can allow returns and have the copy shipped to you, in which case you’ll be charged the wholesale cost of the book and pay for shipping and handling.

• Yes—Destroy: You can allow returns, but the returned units will be shipped back to IngramSpark and destroyed. In this option, you’re only charged the wholesale cost of the book.

After living in both Western and Central Europe during the 1980s and 1990s and witnessing firsthand the extraordinary revolutions for freedom, singer-turned-entrepreneur Anne Marie Kenny has quite the story to share. A Song for Bohemia is her personal account of the electrifying years leading up to the destruction of the Berlin Wall, the life-altering revolutions that followed, and the unexpected ways art can influence political change.

Reflecting on that era, Anne Marie explains, “I was living in France during the 1980s, leading up to this historic time, and then in Prague all during the 1990s. It was a turning point for the world, but so many people have forgotten or never known about this history… A Song for Bohemia is a love song and a tribute to the spirit of the Czech people, a story of a personal and collective journey to freedom. With the voice of an impassioned artist, this memoir does not merely speak; it sings.”

After five years of researching and writing, Anne Marie was ready to share her experiences with the world, but the road to publication proved to be a battle of its own.

Navigating the European and American Publishing Markets

Anne Marie’s book first found a home with a traditional publisher in the Czech Republic. They translated her English text into Czech and made the book available throughout the Czech Republic. This publisher still has exclusive publishing rights for the Czech-language version.

After her success with the Czech-language version, she decided it was equally important to ensure the English-language version found its way into the hands and hearts of those beyond the Czech Republic. This is where her publishing journey grew rocky.

Why This Historical Author Shifted from Traditional to Self-Publishing

Two U.S. publishers expressed interest in distributing the English version worldwide, but their proposed timeline was disappointing: They estimated it would take a minimum of 1-2 years before they would start the process.

Deciding that was far too long, Anne Marie determined to self-publish instead, and the results have been wonderful. She set out with the goal to share her life experiences, conduct speaking engagements, and sell her books worldwide. On top of achieving all that, she’s found the process to be even more rewarding than she imagined:

“The biggest rewards have been to spark conversations and dialogue about several themes in my memoir, primarily on ‘freedom, democracy, and human rights.’ I’ve been honored to be the keynote speaker at places such as the Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, MO, and the Václav Havel Library in Prague, Czech Republic, among many other venues. It’s awesome what a book can do to open doors and make a difference in our seemingly divided world; there actually can be respectful dialogue.”

Polishing the Manuscript: Choosing a Professional Book Design Team

Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many people want to put their screens away, hold a book in their hands, and read leisurely by natural light or [a] soft lamp. And further, I hadn’t realized till I wrote this book, and have spoken at many book clubs and organizations, how many people LOVE TO READ! We hear stories about how no one reads books anymore—not true!”

Your Independent Publishing Journey Doesn’t Have to Be Solo

Self-publishing doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone—nor should you. When done right, there are many steps to prepare a book for publishing, and with the right team behind you, you can soar through the finish line with flying colors.

For decades, authors faced a rigid gatekeeping system: Either land a deal with a traditional publisher or give up the dream of publishing their book. Since the advent of “self-publishing,” the landscape has completely shifted. Authors have more options than ever regarding how to get their book into the world. The trick now is deciding what route to take.

At 1106 Design, we meet authors every day who are standing at the crossroads between traditional and self-publishing. Here is a candid look at some pros and cons of both routes.

Understanding Traditional Book Publishing: Pros and Cons

Most authors looking into this route immediately think of the largest publishing houses, such as Penguin Random House. There are smaller firms, however, that may be more fitting for your book and can have more close-knit ties with their authors.

Just keep in mind that nothing about the traditional route is guaranteed. Even some of the most famous authors faced one rejection after another before finally getting their big break.

Pro tips:

• Wherever you decide to query, always research the firm first. Resources such as Writer Beware, The Authors Guild, and Writer’s Digest are invaluable in learning about the industry, vetting potential agents and publishers, and avoiding scams.

• A literary agent is recommended for this path. Many traditional publishers won’t consider unagented authors, and an agent can be instrumental in helping negotiate a fair deal.

• Traditional publishers favor authors who already have a strong platform and large social media following. Despite what many authors believe, publishers generally will not create or manage your website, socials, or otherwise put a lot of effort into front-end marketing. Their marketing efforts are focused more on the back end, such as outreach to retailers, libraries, and trade reviewers, and they tend to backlist titles (stop actively marketing them) after a few months.

Benefits of Traditional Publishing

• No upfront costs: Perhaps the biggest benefit of this route is that there are no out-of-pocket production costs—not with legitimate publishers. The publisher pays for the editing, cover design, typesetting, and any other necessary services to create a professional product.

• Advance payment: Depending on your contract, you may receive an upfront financial advance against your future royalties.

• Easy distribution: Traditional publishers have established pipelines that make it easier to get books into physical bookstores. Retailers and libraries tend to favor traditionally published books.

• Competitive list prices: Your book can usually be priced more competitively. Traditional publishers often have access to cheaper overseas printers to help reduce overhead.

Downsides of Traditional Publishing

• No control: You surrender creative control and rights. The publisher gets the final say on your cover art, title, and sometimes even the content of your manuscript. The specific rights you grant the publisher can vary based on the contract.

• Low royalties: Because the publisher assumes all financial risk and foots the bill for production, authors typically only see about 5% to 15% of the domestic print book royalties, (often around 25% for eBooks). As with other aspects, your royalty percentage will vary according to the contract. If you receive an advance against your royalties, royalty payments won’t start until the publisher has sold enough copies to account for the advance they paid you. Additionally, agents take a cut of your earnings (commonly around 15% for domestic sales).

• Slow turnaround: Traditional publishing is a long process. It can take years of querying to find an agent and land a deal, and then 18 months or more before the book actually goes to print, if it finds acceptance at all. The publisher can even choose to delay your launch based on their existing catalog and market conditions.

• Less stability: If the publisher is bought out or otherwise folds, you may get stuck in limbo, unsure where your rights rest or whether you can seek out a new publisher.

True Self-Publishing: Weighing Out the New Industry Standard

Notice we specify “true” self-publishing. There is a lot of misinformation online about what self-publishing actually is, and hybrid publishers have muddied the waters.

With true self-publishing, the author acts as the publisher, taking on all financial responsibility but also reaping all rewards and retaining all rights. This doesn’t mean you have to do everything on your own, however.

You can (and should) hire experts to help with editing, proofreading, cover design, interior design and layout, eBook formatting, audiobook production, and any other desired services. This is essential so you can compete well against traditionally published books.

You can either hire separate freelancers and manage the team yourself, or you can hire an experienced author services company like 1106 Design that provides project management and end-to-end editing and production services that will ensure your book is created according to traditional publishing standards.

Pro Tips:

• Vet any service before hiring them to avoid scams. The Alliance of Independent Authors, IngramSpark, and Reedsy provide excellent information for self-publishers.

• We recommend avoiding hybrid publishers that charge authors up front AND take a cut of author earnings off the back end. The only reason it makes sense for traditional publishers to dip into author royalties is that they, not the author, shoulder all financial burden. If you’re paying a service to produce your book, that service has no right to also take a cut of your earnings.

• Purchase your own ISBNs from the official ISBN agency of your country (Bowker, for the US) to ensure you are the publisher of record and allow for greatest flexibility regarding where you may print and distribute your book.

Benefits of Self-Publishing

• Full control: Again, you retain full creative control and retain all your intellectual property rights. You choose the title, accept or reject editorial suggestions, approve the interior typography, and dictate the cover design.

• Higher per-book profit: All net revenue (the profit left over after subtracting the print costs, any distribution or market access fees, and wholesale discount) is yours to keep. You can control how much compensation you receive by setting your own retail price and wholesale discount (depending on what distribution platform you use).

• Faster turnaround (usually): Your book is published on your timeline, no need to wait for anyone else’s approval. At 1106 Design, once a manuscript is finalized and submitted to us, it generally takes around 3-4 months (for average-length books) to make a manuscript market-ready. Because we allow authors to weigh in on every decision, however, this timeline can vary based on author review time and the number of file revisions requested.

Downsides of Self-Publishing

• Upfront fees: To compete with traditional books, you must act like a publisher. This means paying upfront to hire professional editors and top-tier book designers. The Verdict: Choosing the Right Publishing Strategy

The debate between traditional publishing and self-publishing basically boils down to your goals, budget, and how long you’re willing to wait. Both paths can be viable, but neither is a one-size-fits-all solution.

Those who put the most value on control and independence may favor self-publishing. As long as you’re willing to invest in meticulous editing and industry-standard design, true self-publishing offers unparalleled freedom.

Our previous post explored how authors can leverage wide eBook distribution platforms to reach a larger audience. Authors who still use KDP, however, should know about their recent DRM policy updates. Understanding how KDP’s DRM options impact reader flexibility and book security on Amazon is essential for managing a modern publishing career.

What Is DRM?

DRM stands for “Digital Rights Management.” It’s intended to help limit unauthorized access to digital files. It provides a decent barrier against casual copying and sharing. Emphasis on “casual.”

No security protocol is entirely effective. DRM can be relatively easy to strip away or maneuver around, so it doesn’t do much against serious pirates. It does require additional steps to crack it, however, which can help prevent normal people from effortlessly copying and sharing the file. Because of that, many stores still use DRM to help lock in their digital products.

KDP’s Policy Shift: DRM-Free EPUB and PDF Downloads

KDP’s policy update mainly focuses on what happens when an author chooses to opt out of DRM. Previously, going “DRM-free” simply meant Amazon wouldn’t encrypt the file. Now, Amazon is actively facilitating cross-platform sharing, allowing for more freedom.

Verified purchasers of DRM-free Kindle eBooks can download EPUB and PDF versions of the book, allowing them to read the files on non-Kindle devices and apps. This download option doesn’t extend to Kindle Unlimited or library-style borrows—only to those who buy the eBook

For DRM-free eBooks published prior to December 9, 2025, Amazon won’t automatically expose the EPUB/PDF download buttons to your buyers; not unless you confirm that choice via your account.

For authors uploading new eBooks to KDP, you can choose your DRM setting during upload.

Should You Enable DRM on KDP?

For indie authors, this change presents a strategic crossroads.

• Choosing to apply DRM: If you select this option, your Kindle eBook will remain locked within the Amazon ecosystem. Readers (who don’t crack the DRM) will need to use a Kindle device or the official Kindle app to read your eBook.

• Choosing not to apply DRM: Opting out provides ultimate flexibility to your readers, which can be perceived as greater value. However, because Amazon could then offer the purchaser an unencrypted EPUB or PDF file, the barrier to unauthorized distribution drops.

If your main focus is being as accessible as possible, you aren’t concerned with unauthorized file sharing, and your Amazon target audience values flexibility, going DRM-free can be a good move.

If you are protective of your digital assets, you want more control over your files, and your Amazon target audience favors Kindle apps/devices anyway (and why wouldn’t they, if they’re purchasing the eBook from Amazon), enabling DRM may be the way to go for you.

Quite frankly, if flexibility is your concern, you should consider distributing the eBook to platforms such as IngramSpark to reach other retailers outside of Amazon. Then, your readers can purchase and download the eBook from their preferred vendor.

Pro Tip: You can run a poll via your website, newsletter, and social media to learn more about your audience’s reading habits and thoughts on DRM.

Navigating the DRM Dilemma

Weighing reader freedom against file security can feel overwhelming, but that’s just one part of launching a successful eBook. For years, KDP Select has been treated as a “no-brainer” for indie authors distributing eBooks. However, as we navigate 2026, the landscape has shifted. Depending on your goals, relying on a single retailer may be more of a hindrance than a help.

“Going wide” means distributing your eBook through as many avenues as possible (your own website, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, libraries, etc.), not just Amazon/Kindle. Wide eBook distribution can help you reach more readers, grow your brand, and allow you to operate independent of the Amazon algorithm.

Here’s our blueprint for widening your eBook’s reach.

Pro Tip: While it’s most efficient to take these steps before publishing your eBook, you can do so after publication, as well, as long as you own your own ISBNs (more on that below).

KDP Select vs. Wide Distribution: Is Amazon Exclusivity Still Worth It?

Authors who enroll in KDP Select can enjoy the benefits of Kindle Unlimited, Kindle Countdown Deals, etc. To learn more about KDP Select, this help article outlines its benefits.

However, KDP Select requires the eBook to be exclusively offered through KDP, limiting the eBook to the Amazon ecosystem. While Amazon is still a giant among booksellers, it isn’t the only store readers like to shop, and some readers boycott it entirely.

Opting out of KDP Select will limit some of the benefits KDP offers, but it doesn’t mean your eBook can’t appear on Amazon. It just means that you will have a chance to distribute your eBook to a larger audience.

Ultimately, it’s your call whether KDP Select or wide distribution is best for your specific situation, but for those who want to go wide, read on.

How to Prepare Your eBook for Wide Distribution: A Step-by-Step Checklist

Before you leave the Amazon ecosystem, you must ensure your files can stand on other platforms—and that your other platforms are ready to go. Don’t forget to turn off your KDP Select auto-renew.

1. Secure Your Own ISBNs for Maximum Publisher Control

KDP does not require eBooks to have ISBNs, but certain wide platforms do. If you haven’t yet purchased your own ISBNs from your country’s official ISBN agency (that would be Bowker, for the US), you should do so now for the greatest flexibility, metadata consistency, and control (owning your ISBNs ensures you are listed as the publisher). Then, you should ensure your files show the relevant ISBN on the copyright page.

2. Format Professional, Validated ePub Files

If you have not already hired a professional service to create your eBook files, now is the time to correct that mistake. Expert formatting is non-negotiable if you want your audience to have a good reading experience—and your eBook file must be clean enough to pass other platforms’ reviews. 3. Choose the Right Distribution Platforms

IngramSpark is not the only platform that can get your eBook to libraries and non-Amazon retailers. That said, we typically recommend uploading to IngramSpark for more convenient expanded distribution options, and then using KDP (without opting in for KDP Select) for direct Amazon distribution. Don’t hesitate to conduct your own research to see what options are best for your goals, however.

4. Launch a Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) Storefront

Successful wide authors are now selling directly from their own websites, not just retailers. This allows you to capture customer emails and keep more of the list price. If you go this route, make sure your website storefront is optimized to permit seamless online purchases.

Wide eBook Marketing: Shifting Your Strategy Beyond Amazon Ads

When going wide, you shouldn’t focus all of your marketing efforts through Amazon. Diversify your marketing strategy to reach more people.

• Diversified Ads: Instead of spending 100% of your budget on Amazon Ads, experiment with Meta (Facebook/Instagram) ads that link to a landing page (like your own website) where readers can choose their preferred retailer or purchase direct from you.

• “Store Credit” Users: Remember that Apple, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble users are often loyal to their platforms because of gift cards and device/app preferences. You can include retailer-specific links in your newsletters and on your website to cater to these “non-Amazon” fans.

Conclusion: Building a Resilient, Platform-Agnostic Publishing Business

Going wide is a marathon, not a sprint. It may take longer to build momentum than it does in Kindle Unlimited, but the result is a resilient, professional business that no single algorithm change can destroy.

A recent post of ours explored how and why to create a special edition hardcover, but doing so takes considerable time and money—more so than standard editions. Special editions are collectible objects that require significant upfront capital for not only high-end editing and design, but also premium materials like foil stamping and sprayed edges.

If your savings account isn’t enough to cover your costs from start to finish, here are four proven ways to fund your project.

Pro Tip: Before you research potential funding routes, calculate the total cost—including professional editing, custom design, high-end packaging, and shipping. (Don’t forget to factor in the cost of a new ISBN, if you don’t already have one available, as special editions require their own ISBN.) This will help you set solid goals.

1. Crowdfund Your Book

Popular crowdfunding platforms include Kickstarter, Indiegogo, BackerKit, and GoFundMe, though other options abound. Kickstarter is often regarded as the industry standard when it comes to crowdfunding for creative projects.

Kickstarter has a large audience and provides various means to help incentivize backers, such as Tiered Rewards. The caveat with Kickstarter, however, is that you can only cash out if you’ve hit your goal by your deadline.

2. The Patron Model: Secure High-Level Sponsorships

For a more intimate approach, seek out “Founding Patrons.” These are high-level supporters willing to pay a premium in exchange for exclusive recognition, such as having their name printed on a dedication page or in a patron’s list inside the book.

Depending on your price point, a group of dedicated patrons can cover most or all of your production and printing fees. This model fosters long-term loyalty and bypasses the public pressure of a massive campaign, though it’s most effective for authors who already have an established platform.

3. Recurring Revenue: Utilize Subscription Platforms

Platforms like Patreon and Substack allow you to generate recurring revenue while you build your book, engage real-time with fans, offer rewards, and grow your audience. Each platform has its own focus, so research them before you commit your time to ensure you choose a platform that can help further your goals.

Once you start, keep subscribers engaged by offering “behind-the-scenes” design updates, exclusive deleted scenes, or other bonus content and perks. This steady cash flow helps mitigate the sting of large invoices for editing and interior design.

4. Author Grants and Literary Contests for Special Projects

Because special editions emphasize the “art of the book,” they may qualify for grants that standard editions do not. Look for local, university, or private organization grants focused on fine arts (book arts or graphic arts in this case) and craftsmanship.

Additionally, winning or placing in prestigious book contests can provide prize money to fund your book project, as well as an award to bolster your book’s perceived value. Just bear in mind that grants and contests are, of course, highly competitive and are often among the slower, less reliable ways to get funded.

Set Yourself Up for Success

To win over backers, transparency is your best marketing tool. Regardless of what route you choose, clearly explain what services you are using, what steps you’re taking to ensure quality, your goals for the book, and what audience would be most interested in reading it.

Most importantly, don’t rely on DIY templates. High-tier collectors expect professional products. To command a premium price, your book must look the part—inside and out.

For years, indie authors obsessed over making their books available at major retailers (usually Amazon). In 2026, while this is still an important goal for authors, the landscape has shifted.

Between the rise of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and a crowded marketplace, professional authors are reclaiming their independence.

The most successful authors today aren’t just focusing on retailers; they are building Direct-to-Consumer (D2C, a.k.a. Direct-to-Reader, in this case) ecosystems.

The Benefits of Direct-to-Consumer Sales for Authors

While major retailers offer great reach, they cut into author earnings and keep the most valuable asset—your customer data—for themselves.

A D2C model allows you to capture customer email addresses, more intimately understand your audience’s buying habits, keep more of your earnings, and have greater control over pricing, promotions, and presentation.

Pro Tip: Before you can set up D2C sales (and before you publish your book at all), you should purchase ISBNs directly from your country’s official ISBN agency (Bowker, in the US). This ensures you are the publisher of record, allows you to keep metadata consistent, and offers the greatest control and flexibility. Some platforms offer “free” ISBNs, but this means the platform, not you, is the publisher of record (and you may also be limited as to where you can publish and distribute your book).

Optimize Your Author Website for 2026 Search Trends

To succeed in the D2C model, your website must be more than a digital billboard. Modern search engines and AI assistants prioritize websites that optimize for “Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness” (E-E-A-T).

One great way to do this is by implementing “human-verified” content. Here are some ideas to clearly showcase your professional collaboration with human designers and editors:

• Production Credits: Include a “Production Credits” list on your book’s sale page on your website.

• Behind the Scenes: Create a special “Behind the Scenes” or “How I Publish” page on your website explaining your process and who you work with. It doesn’t hurt to add a transparency statement explicitly stating your stance on AI, whether you used AI at all for research/outlining, etc.

• Schema Markup: If you’re technically inclined, add structured data to your website’s metadata that links to your professional service providers to help search engines “verify” the professional network surrounding your book.

Pro tip: Emphasizing that your work has been written, edited, and designed by humans doesn’t just build trust—it helps justify higher price points so you can get every penny you deserve.

You should also consider adding a FAQ section to your website to answer specific reader questions, and don’t forget to include a bio to help readers (and AI) learn more about you. Simplify Direct Sales Through Shopify, WooCommerce, and IngramSpark Share and Sell Links

The last thing anyone wants is to get hyped up about a book and then find themselves unable to figure out the checkout process. Ensure your storefront is as clean and simple as possible. If you’re using Shopify or WooCommerce, optimize for “one-click” purchases to reduce cart abandonment.

If you don’t want the hassle of setting up Shopify or WooCommerce, and if your print book has been uploaded to IngramSpark, you can look into IngramSpark Share and Sell Links. The beautiful special finishes many of us remember from our childhood are still used today for collections of works from history’s great thinkers and new best-sellers from traditional publishers, and they can be used for indie special editions, too.

With the rise of “Bookstagram” and “BookTok,” the demand for aesthetically stunning, “shelf-worthy” editions has skyrocketed. For indie authors, this presents a unique opportunity to increase margins and reward reader loyalty.

But what actually transforms a standard edition into a collectible that readers will pay top-dollar for? Here are some of the more popular high-end features that attract serious collectors.

Premium Exterior Design Features

If you want to entice a collector to shell out the money for your special edition, it needs to look the part, starting with the exterior.

• Foil stamping: Metallic foil can add eye-catching flair to your cover and create an immediate sense of luxury.

• Embossing: Adding a raised or recessed texture creates a more tactile experience that signals “premium quality” to a buyer.

• Sprayed edges: The outer edges of a page block can be decorated with a bold color, a metallic sheen, or a digitally printed pattern that complements the cover art.

• Leather bookbinding: For a more traditional, high-quality look and feel and exceptional durability that goes beyond the run-of-the-mill glossy or matte finishes, you can look into hand-crafted leatherbound hardcovers.

Collectors pay for exclusivity and durability—outside and in. To justify a higher price point, consider interior upgrades, as well.

• Decorative endpapers: Replacing standard white endpapers with custom illustrations, maps, or even a simple repeating pattern creates a “wow” factor the moment the reader turns the cover.

• Ribbon markers: A built-in ribbon bookmark is a nice, convenient touch that adds perceived value.

• Color printing: If your standard edition was printed in black and white to cut costs, printing the special edition with color images or headers provides a new experience.

• Illustrations: Consider adding illustrations or other decorative artwork to enhance readers’ enjoyment.

• Heavier paper stock: Moving from a standard 50lb paper to a thicker 70lb stock gives the book a weightier feel and prevents ink from bleeding through the page.

Choosing the Right Printer for Special Editions

While IngramSpark and KDP offer various binding, paper, ink, and cover finish options, most of the treatments discussed in this post can only be found through specialized, niche services. For instance, many offset printers supply special edition touches (click here to learn more about offset printing).

We typically recommend using IngramSpark and KDP together for standard distribution, and if authors want a special edition, we recommend they seek out a suitable offset printer for the highest possible quality. However, different authors require different solutions. We can help navigate the sources for special finishes based on each author’s specific needs.

Whatever printer you decide to use, you should read their terms to ensure you’ll receive the highest compensation possible per book sold and verify there’s no exclusivity regarding where the book is distributed (if, that is, they offer distribution services). Don’t be afraid to compare the offerings of multiple printers to find the best fit for your goals.

For years, serious indie authors have obsessed over Keywords and Categories to meet professional standards. They understood the old SEO: readers typed “psychological horror with ghosts” into a search engine, and if the metadata was right, the book appeared somewhere in a list of links.

In 2026, the way readers find books has evolved. We are moving from keyword-driven searches to more “conversational” AI interactions. To remain relevant and visible in this new landscape, authors must learn Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

What Is GEO?

Think about how readers now use tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity. Readers don’t just search; they ask conversational questions and make requests like, “Recommend an epic fantasy series in the vein of Lord of the Rings with dragons and a strong female lead.”

Generative engines don’t return a simple page of links; they synthesize a streamlined, tailored answer, and then they usually ask follow-up questions to prompt a deeper dive. Use long-tail, narrative-based phrases where appropriate. Try to make it sound natural, like you’re describing the book to a friend (keyword stuffing can lead to AI ignoring content).

Instead of using a single word like “horror,” go for “supernatural horror with allies-to-lovers romance.” Research what questions and comparisons your ideal readers are using (AI can help with this), then optimize for them.

Other than the keyword slots at KDP and IngramSpark, you can work long-tail keywords naturally into your book description, author bio, website copy, newsletters, and blog posts.

Define Your Book’s Tropes and Themes

AI loves structure. Make your genre, subgenre, and key tropes as clear as possible. Be sure to use standard industry terms for tropes (e.g., “enemies-to-lovers,” “found family”) in all your copy (book description, keywords, etc.). This provides clear “knowledge links” for AI.

Build “Trust Signals” Across the Web

One of the best ways to build authority with AI is to be mentioned on blogs, vlogs, and podcasts that already have high authority. Reviews and other mentions on social media and trusted websites (including customer reviews on Amazon), guest posts, and interviews can offer a huge boost in credibility. Get people talking about your book. AI weighs such data as “trust signals.”

Maintain Brand Consistency Across Platforms

GEO goes beyond your KDP dashboard. AI models crawl the web. Your website, social media, and any niche platforms (such as Goodreads or StoryGraph) should all reinforce the same metadata and narrative connections where possible.

All information—name, credentials, business name/address (such as for a publishing company), phone number, etc.—should be as consistent as possible across all platforms where it appears. For authors, it’s primarily important to ensure your author identity/digital handle and branding are consistent. That goes for the book title, subtitle, and cover, as well.

Utilize Your Author Website

Some authors who don’t already have a website, who have been relying on social media or their Amazon author page, are reluctant to invest in one. However, author websites are instrumental in building authority and trust with AI.

There aren’t many places online where you have full control, but your website, depending on what platform you’re using, is fully customizable. Take advantage of that to add relevant information and optimize your code.

If you’re not especially tech-savvy, this tip may be more for your website designer/developer, but without getting deep into tech-talk, you can look into using structured data (Schema.org) on your website, preferably in JSON-LD format, to make your website more “readable” and understandable for AI.

AI also loves FAQ sections, so consider including one to answer questions such as what your book is about, who it may benefit the most and how, what information, themes, and/or tropes it offers, etc. If you’re not sure what questions are relevant, do some research (such as on AnswerThePublic) to learn what questions your readers are asking.

Include your author bio and credentials on your website to further build trust. Keep in mind that your author bio isn’t just for humans anymore—AI uses it to help weigh your trustworthiness and authority in your field.

Invest in Professional Cover Design

Some AI tools can “see” book covers and gauge which ones fit the “vibe” of the book’s metadata. Your text and art should look like they belong among other books in your genre. If your book is marketed as a thriller but the cover looks more like a cozy mystery, AI might ignore it. An expert cover designer can ensure your book cover clearly reflects your genre.

Finalizing a manuscript is a huge milestone for any author, but for those who plan to publish, there are still many steps ahead, including the interior design/typesetting phase, which is when your rough manuscript will transform into a professional, bookstore-ready volume.

Understanding this process—and your role in it—will help ensure smooth sailing from manuscript to market.

Why Professional Book Typesetting Matters

In a nutshell, book typesetting is the process of arranging text and images on a page to create a visually appealing and easily readable layout.

Here are just a few of the dozens of crucial elements typesetters consider with each project.

Typeface selection: Choosing a legible and aesthetically pleasing typeface is the foundation of good typesetting. Fonts should suit the book’s genre and target audience.

Leading: Leading is the vertical space between lines of text. Too little leading can impact readability and make text appear crowded. Too much can make text appear disjointed.

Widows and orphans: The first line of a paragraph should never appear at the bottom of a page; the last line of a paragraph should never wind up at the top of a page. Sounds easy enough until another rule kicks in: Facing pages in a book must end on the same line.

Runts: A paragraph should never end with a single word less than five characters long (including punctuation).

Margins and gutters: Proper margins and gutters provide visual breathing room and prevent text from being lost in the binding.

Kerning: Kerning adjusts the space between individual letters to create a more visually balanced appearance.

Image placement and captions: Images should be integrated seamlessly with the text, and they must be high enough resolution for print. Any captions should be clear, concise, and placed appropriately.

Hyperlinks: It’s important URLs don’t break in a position that can cause the link to be cut short and misdirect readers. The Chicago Manual of Style specifies how URLs should be handled to avoid such problems.

Non-breaking spaces: These are special characters that prevent two words or elements from breaking across lines. Sometimes, such characters are necessary to provide a smooth, uninterrupted reading experience. For example, they can help keep a first name with a middle initial, so the middle initial doesn’t break to the next line.

Our Collaborative Book Design Process: What to Expect

Each company has its own process. Some allow authors to collaborate while others are more restrictive.

At 1106 Design, the process is highly collaborative and creative. We don’t just “dump” your text into a premade template; we curate a layout that reflects your brand and genre.

Our interior design and layout process generally follows these steps:

1. Sample text designs: Our typesetter will create brief interior samples to help determine the desired look and feel of your book, from typestyle to image treatment. We will work with you until a sample is approved.

2. Full interior layout: After a sample is approved, the typesetter will lay out the rest of the book to match.

3. Professional proofreading: One of our expert proofreaders will weed out grammatical, spelling, and punctuation mistakes, as well as issues with the typesetting itself, such as excessive spacing, etc. However, it’s nearly impossible for one person to find every issue, especially on a single pass. So, we always send the typeset book to the author, not just the proofreader. This is your opportunity to ensure the layout is as you want it.

4. Additional reviews: Once proofreading is done, the proofreader’s suggestions will be sent to you for review so you can accept or reject them as you see fit and request any changes of your own. We’ll then enter the desired changes, send you the revised proof for review, and continue to work back and forth with you until you approve the interior.

True Corrections vs. Authorial Changes: Saving Time and Budget

Authors are often surprised that, after proofreading, they still find more revisions to make. Some authors blame the proofreader for this. However, this usually boils down to a misunderstanding about the difference between true corrections and authorial changes.

Corrections seek to remove typos and other objective issues within the text for a professional presentation. These are the kind of changes a proofreader would typically suggest.

Authorial changes are subjective refinements. They seek to polish the text rather than fix actual errors. For example, changing “walked” to “strolled” is a subjective change. You may feel it improves the book, and maybe it does, but the previous text wasn’t incorrect (and therefore, a proofreader wouldn’t normally flag it).

Pro Tip: To save time and money, you should only start design once your manuscript is final. The focus of typesetting should be on making your book beautiful and readable, not rewording passages that were to be revised before work began.

Authors will always find some way they can revise a book, but at some point, you just have to let go. Typesetting is the least efficient time to make any changes, let alone those that aren’t objectively necessary.

We recommend you sleep on your revision requests a time or two before submitting them to ensure they’re truly what you want, and proofread them for accuracy to avoid accidentally introducing errors. It’s the typesetter’s job to enter revisions, not question their correctness.

Perfection vs. Professionalism: The Goal of the Final Proof

Everyone does their best to ensure books are as error-free as they can be. Absolute perfection, however, is impossible. Each review has the potential to bring new issues to light that were overlooked before. This is completely normal.

Even with the academic presses we work with, it isn’t uncommon to have several revision rounds before the manuscript is declared final. Similarly, traditional publishers go through countless rounds of proofreading, and even then, a minor typo can still slip through.

The goal, therefore, should not be unattainable perfection—it should just be to make the book as clean and final as humanly possible within the time frame allowed by your publishing deadline.

How to Use AI for Book Cover Ideation: A Practical Guide for Indie Authors

Your book cover is the single most important marketing tool you have. It’s the initial scroll-stopping hook that convinces readers to click your book over all the others in the search results. Many indie authors think AI-image generators are a fast, cost-effective way to create their final covers, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Let’s explore why.

The Risks of Using AI Image Generators for Indie Authors

Artificial Intelligence is an amazing tool, but like all tools, it has its setbacks. AI does not excel at everything, thankfully, and some of its more obvious shortcomings are related to image generation. Here are some common questions and issues with AI-generated content.

Understanding AI Copyright: Do You Own Your AI-Generated Book Cover?

You cannot copyright AI-generated material, and using AI-generated images can lead to legal issues.

Artificial Intelligence can’t create anything original. When you give AI specific prompts, it may “feel” like you’re creating something new, but you aren’t. Without getting too deep into tech-talk, AI generates images by analyzing various elements from pre-existing sources in its training databases and off the web.

Therefore, it can pull data, so to speak, from copyrighted sources that you do not own the rights to use commercially. Even if the AI tool claims you have permission to use its output, you might not have permission from the original artists.

Remember: You are responsible for all AI output and how you use it. You might not “mean” to infringe on someone’s copyright, but you’re still liable if the AI tool drew from content you aren’t licensed to use.

Quality Control: Is AI Good at Creating Book Artwork?

The short answer: No. AI-generated images are prone to mistakes that would be obvious to a human but are easily missed by machines, such as disfigured subjects (think birds with three wings) and distorted backgrounds (like unidentifiable scenery elements).

DPI and Printer Requirements: Do AI Images Meet Book Printing Standards?

AI tools, in general, cannot provide the high-resolution files required for proper printing. While DPI up-scalers are improving, they still can’t always effectively improve resolution in a way that ensures images will print well.

All printers have minimum file requirements regarding resolution and size, and if your cover doesn’t meet them, it will either be rejected or will print very poorly. Expert cover designers understand the file requirements and can provide print-ready, stress-free files.

Disclosure Rules: Does IngramSpark and KDP Allow AI-Generated Content?

The answer as of the time of this article is a tentative “yes,” but IngramSpark and KDP both prompt authors/publishers to disclose if content was generated with AI. IngramSpark currently reserves the right to reject any AI-generated content at its discretion.

Other printers might follow suit in the future (and rules may get stricter), so it’s important to stay abreast of your printer’s specific rules and regulations.

How to Use AI for Book Cover Ideation

As you may have guessed by now, human designers still provide the gold standard for final, original, printer-acceptable, and ethically sourced cover designs. So, what is AI good for? Surely there’s some way you can use AI to help streamline the cover design process, right?

Absolutely, but the key is using AI as a brainstorming and market research partner to help you gather your thoughts and preferences before hiring a human expert—NOT using AI to create any part of the cover for you.

Wading into book design without direction can be costly and time-consuming. Authors who claim not to have specific preferences at the start often find themselves forming very strong opinions after the concepts are created. The feedback they provide later should have laid the groundwork for the cover design from the beginning.

AI can help you avoid this expensive runaround by helping you solidify a direction and generate talking points before design begins.

AI for Market Research: Gather Ideas and Inspiration

AI is an excellent brainstorming and market research partner. You can ask AI to pull up a list of bestsellers in your genre with similar themes and subjects to your book so you can identify workable design trends, get a feel for different approaches, and gather inspiration.

By allowing you to easily compare existing covers in your genre, AI can help you avoid tiresome cliches while maintaining reasonable genre cues to help buyers identify if your book is what they’re looking for.

For example, you can use a prompt such as, “I am writing a [genre] book about [theme]. List the top 10 bestselling covers in this genre from 2025 and 2026. What colors, text style, and imagery do they share? What cliches should I avoid?”

As always, don’t forget to verify the information. Check the links the tool shares to make sure the information it provides accurately reflects the source material. Your book designer can also offer advice.

AI for Visualization: Test Out Imagery

While you shouldn’t use an AI-generated image on your cover, you can still use AI to experiment with different imagery so you can better visualize what works for your cover.

This helps you test different aesthetics, color palettes, and focal points until you find the ideal visual tone for your genre. You can then organize your ideas and preferences into a brief and discuss them with a cover designer and/or illustrator.

For example, prompt AI to “Describe a book cover for a [genre] novel that feels [mood/emotion]. What color palette should I use? What should be the central focal point?”

AI for Keywords: Optimize Your Title and Subtitle

AI also excels at using relevant keywords to craft titles and subtitles that will perform well on the market. All you need to do is feed it your summary, share your goals, and let it know your target audience. The more specific your prompts are, the more targeted its suggestions will be.

You, of course, will still need to fine-tune them, but Artificial Intelligence can provide a strong outline or at least good keywords to help you craft the perfect title/subtitle with which to build your cover design around.

Here’s an example prompt: “Based on my book summary [insert summary], give me 5 title ideas that use high-traffic keywords for readers of [comparable author].”

Remember: Always read the terms and privacy policy of any AI tool before you feed it your proprietary ideas so you understand how it uses your data.

Top AI Tools for Brainstorming and Visualization

ChatGPT/Gemini

As always, general-purpose AI tools are wonderful for brainstorming, market research, creating title/subtitle outlines, and more. They can suggest elements and colors that might work for your cover, and they can warn you if your current title or subtitle falls short.

Midjourney/DALL-E

Midjourney and DALL-E are popular for creating images from detailed text prompts. They can help you visualize your direction before you engage with a human designer. Again, however, we do not recommend using AI-generated images on your final cover.

Understandably, many authors aren’t sure how to utilize AI, and they worry that it signals the end of human creativity altogether. However, it’s best to think of Artificial Intelligence as a tool.

The key to successful integration with AI is adopting it as a powerful efficiency and business tool. By using Artificial Intelligence to focus on analytical or admin tasks, indie authors can dramatically streamline their workflow, allowing more time for actual creativity and writing.

On a similar note, because AI draws from content that has already been published, you must take extreme caution in how you use the gathered data. Even brainstorming should be carefully guided to avoid generating content too close to pre-existing works.

Remember: Ideas themselves can’t be copyrighted, but the specific, tangible expression of an idea is, and using raw AI content can easily lead to you unknowingly plagiarizing a work, which comes with its own set of consequences.

The rules surrounding the use of AI are constantly evolving, and the terms of each Artificial Intelligence tool are subject to change over time. To remain ethical, stay on top of guidelines

All that to say: AI is great for drafting and brainstorming, not for generating the final product.

The independent publishing world is saturated. Writing a good book is essential, and for authors who write mainly as a hobby or for the sake of creativity, that is enough. However, it is no longer enough for profit-oriented authors who wish to turn their writing into a career.

For optimal marketability, indie authors must adopt a strategic market mindset and ensure their product stands out among the competition. This process begins with a 3-step positioning strategy—making sure your book packaging immediately communicates its value to the right readers.

Step 1: Narrow Down Your Niche

Study the bestsellers in your chosen niche. Note how they position their books, and how they tailor their books and marketing copy to their target audience. Indie authors whose primary focus is making a profit must first write for their market.

Once you get a sense of your market, narrow down your niche. Success is found in specificity. Instead of broadly targeting “Romantic Fantasy,” for example, focus on “Enemies-to-Lovers Dark Fantasy with Necromancy.”

Identify Your Audience’s Needs

To be successful, you must connect and resonate with your target audience. Identify what your audience wants/needs, craft your book accordingly, and make it clear in your marketing copy that your book delivers what they’re looking for.

For example, if you’re a fiction author, what specific story conventions do your readers expect? What tropes do they want to read?

If you’re a nonfiction author, what problem does your audience need a solution for? What are they seeking to learn about or improve on?

Make sure to mention those key themes in your keywords, blurb, and any other marketing copy, as appropriate (just don’t force it; any terms you mention in your blurb, for instance, should flow naturally along with the rest of the text).

Analyze Bestsellers in Your Genre

Study the top 20 books in your category. Note what their covers and interiors have in common (e.g., color palette, imagery, typography) and see what works for them. Read their reviews to see what customers liked and didn’t like about them.

Don’t hesitate to use bestsellers in your genre as inspiration for your book—you want your book to look like it belongs among them. That said, you shouldn’t simply copy the competition. Common elements and styles can be modified and used in unique ways.

To give your book the best chance on the market, you should invest in professional editing and design services. All the marketing in the world won’t help your book if its packaging is shoddy.

An amateur presentation signals a risk to a potential buyer, regardless of the quality of the story.

Step 2: Write a Blurb That Converts

Different authors have different definitions of the term “blurb.” For our purposes in this article, we’ll consider the “blurb” as being synonymous with your book description.

Think of your blurb as ad copy—it must help convert the casual browser into a paying customer and committed reader. The blurb should quickly tell your reader what they can expect from your book and why they should choose it over others.

Customize as Needed

You can customize your blurb based on where it appears. For example, your blurb on Amazon may include Amazon-optimized keywords, while your blurb on the back cover of your physical book may be slightly shorter for optimal readability and spacing.

Keep It Short

People have short attention spans. Even putting aside any space and word count restrictions, it’s best to keep your blurb as short and concise as possible while still sharing the necessary information. The longer the text is, the less likely browsing customers are to read through it.

Step 3: Optimize Your Storefront

For most authors, the Amazon Product Page is the primary “storefront.” Other retail listings and your website can also be excellent sources of sales, but Amazon still dominates the market. Regardless, you must ensure the metadata is set up properly and consistently across all platforms where your book appears.

Metadata (which includes your title, subtitle, author name, keywords, categories, etc.) is what enables search engine algorithms to suggest your book to buyers searching for its topics, themes, and related content. If the metadata is incorrect, inconsistent, or unclear, your book won’t find its way into the right search results.

Be Strategic With Keywords

Keywords are words and phrases customers put into search engines to find the products they’re looking for online. You can click here to learn more about what keywords are and how to use them, but here are a few tips to get you started:

• Use all the keyword slots available at whatever platform you’re publishing through. KDP, for example, has seven keyword slots.

• Ensure your keywords are clear, descriptive terms that your target audience is actually searching for.

• Update your keywords as needed to find what works best as the market shifts.

• Ensure your title, subtitle, and blurb include relevant keywords, but in a natural way (they shouldn’t be stuffed in).

Choose Relevant Categories

Similar to keywords, BISAC categories help with discoverability when used correctly. BISAC categories allow books to be organized based on their content (genres, topics, etc.).

You should choose categories that accurately reflect your niche but have manageable competition. A smaller category may lead to a higher ranking, granting you greater visibility.

As with keywords, update your categories to adjust to the market as needed. Many authors make the mistake of thinking that categories and keywords are set in stone. They’re not. You should experiment with them periodically to see the impact on your sales.

Proofread Your Text

Once you’re done drafting all your metadata and web copy, proofread it. Errors in metadata can weaken your presentation and cause confusion with both algorithms and readers.

Typos are inevitable. It never hurts to have a second set of eyes review your copy, or even to run it through a program like Grammarly for added peace of mind.

Showcase Your Reviews

Getting reader reviews is crucial for success, as they provide the social proof needed to put new customers at ease and encourage more sales. A book with no or few reviews appears more risky than a book with many positive reviews.

To combat this, savvy authors gather an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) team—a group of readers who receive a free copy of the book before its launch date in exchange for an honest, timely review come launch day.

You can also include a clear but friendly call to action at the end of your book asking for reviews and perhaps asking readers to join your mailing list.

Customer reviews are like gold, but don’t underestimate the benefit of editorial reviews. Amazon has a separate section for editorial reviews that appears further up on the book detail page. While any reviews can go in this section, editorial reviews should, ideally, come from other well-known professionals in your industry or respected sources of paid reviews, such as Kirkus.
