It is September 1, 1894, at Newcastle Road, and Sunderland are about to beat Derby County 8-0 on the opening day of the English First Division. That alone would be a story. But the official 8-0 hides something stranger. Sunderland actually score eleven goals, and Derby spend the afternoon playing 135 minutes of football, three separate periods of forty-five minutes each. Three halves, which is not, mathematically, how halves are meant to work.

To feel how odd this is, you have to know that these were not mismatched sides. The Football League was only six years old, but Sunderland were already one of its great powers. Under their manager Tom Watson, their passing and combination play had earned them a nickname, the Team of All Talents, and back-to-back championships in 1891-92 and 1892-93. The previous season they had finished second, behind Aston Villa. Third that season had been Derby County, who arrived at Newcastle Road with real footballers of their own: John Goodall, once part of Preston’s original Invincibles, his brother Archie, and above all a twenty-year-old forward named Steve Bloomer, already the club’s leading scorer and, in time, its record marksman with 332 goals. This was second against third, not champions against a punchbag.

The trouble began before kickoff. The appointed referee, a Mr Kirkham from Darwen, was somewhere on the railway, having missed his connection at York. He telegraphed ahead that he would not reach Sunderland until close to five o’clock, which left several thousand people standing at Newcastle Road with no referee and no way of being told what was happening. There was no fourth official waiting, and, more importantly, nobody was sure the Football League would even recognize a match refereed by a stand-in. So both clubs lodged formal protests, then agreed to start anyway. A local official from Southwick took charge, a man whose name deserves recording: John Conqueror.

The match kicked off about twenty minutes late. Derby began the better side, forcing corners and threatening through Bloomer, before the Team of All Talents woke up. Johnny Campbell opened the scoring, Jimmy Hannah made it two, and Tommy Hyslop added a third shortly before the interval. Forty-five minutes played, Sunderland 3, Derby 0. Everyone walked off for half-time.

And then the afternoon folded in on itself. Kirkham finally arrived during the interval and ordered the match to be replayed from the start. The first forty-five minutes, and all three Sunderland goals, were wiped away. The score was no longer 3-0. It was 0-0, and everyone began again. Imagine being Derby: you have just been beaten 3-0, and the real referee turns up to tell you, in effect, that none of it counted.

The reprieve lasted about four minutes. Jimmy Hannah scored, then Sunderland scored again, and again, and by the second half-time of the day the score was, with a certain grim comedy, Sunderland 3, Derby 0. The reporters who had already wired the first half-time score around the country now found that the teams had considerately recreated it. But there were still forty-five official minutes to play, and now Derby had a problem beyond the scoreline. They had already run ninety minutes, there were no substitutes to freshen tired legs, and contemporary reports describe the visitors flagging while Sunderland kept coming. A fourth goal arrived, then two more from Hyslop, one from Jimmy Millar, and finally one from James Gillespie near the end. The third final whistle of the afternoon settled it. Officially, Sunderland 8, Derby County 0. Football played, 135 minutes. Sunderland goals scored, eleven. Sunderland goals recognized, eight.

Why did Kirkham restart it at all? The familiar version has him kindly offering the losing side another go, but the truth looks more procedural. The clubs had worried before kickoff that the League might not accept a match run by a replacement, which is exactly why they protested in the first place. The cleanest way to produce an unarguably valid League fixture was to play the required ninety minutes under the appointed referee, which turned the opening forty-five into unofficial football. It was an administrative tangle, not a whim, and the game has since removed the tangle. Today, Law 6 requires competition rules to state in advance who replaces a match official who cannot start or continue, a fourth official, a senior assistant, whoever the competition designates. You do not play forty-five minutes and then delete them because the appointed referee was on a delayed train.

There is a final irony. On paper the restart rescued Derby from 3-0 down. In reality it condemned them to another ninety minutes against one of the fittest teams in England. The season bore out the gap. Sunderland went on to win the title, their third in four years, unbeaten at home, while Derby collapsed to fifteenth and survived only through a Test Match against Notts County. That 8-0 remains the joint-heaviest league defeat in Derby’s history. So the most remarkable thing about the afternoon is not that Sunderland scored eleven. It is that Derby were given permission to forget three of them.

Yesterday: 31 August 1998, the match nobody wanted to win.

Tomorrow: 2 September 1920, an Olympic final decided after 39 minutes and a walkout.

It is August 31, 1998, at the Thống Nhất Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, and something has gone wrong with the whole idea of a football match. Thailand and Indonesia are playing in the Tiger Cup, and neither team seems to want to win. The reason is a quirk of the tournament. Whoever wins this group must travel north to Hanoi to face the hosts, Vietnam, in the semifinal. Whoever finishes second stays right here in Ho Chi Minh City and gets Singapore, widely thought the softer draw. Finishing first has quietly become a punishment.

For most of the match, the two sides handle this by simply not trying. The first half is goalless and strangely aimless. At one point the Indonesian goalkeeper, Hendro Kartiko, is reportedly wandering upfield to take shots himself, which is not a normal feature of a game anyone wants to win. Then, after the break, it becomes farce. Indonesia score, Thailand equalize, and with only minutes left Aji Santoso puts Indonesia 2-1 ahead, which is the last thing Indonesia want, because a win means first place. Thailand level again through Therdsak Chaiman, and now Indonesia are drifting back toward the group win they are desperate to avoid.

So an Indonesian defender solves the problem himself. Mursyid Effendi collects the ball near his own penalty area, with nobody pressing him, turns toward his own goal, and, as Thai forwards try to stop him, calmly puts it past his own keeper. He even applauds as he jogs back for the restart. It is 3-2 to Thailand, a team that did not want the points, and the whistle goes almost at once. Indonesia have achieved the defeat they were chasing.

Here is the important distinction. This was not match-fixing in the usual sense. Nobody bribed Effendi. There was no betting syndicate. The incentive was entirely sporting: both teams believed that losing improved their chance of winning the tournament. Modern football has a name for exactly this. FIFA’s integrity rules recognize that matches can be manipulated not only for money but for sporting advantage, and they list deliberately losing, intentionally conceding and deliberately underperforming as examples. The principle is simple. Once you walk onto the pitch, you do not get to degrade the contest just because a defeat happens to suit you elsewhere.

But there is a second party in the dock, and it is the tournament itself. Badly designed competitions can make cheating feel rational, because they let a team see exactly what result it needs before it plays. The most infamous case came at the 1982 World Cup, when West Germany and Austria met in Gijón already knowing that a narrow German win would send both of them through at Algeria’s expense. West Germany scored early, and then the two teams effectively stopped competing. The 1-0 that followed was so cynical that FIFA soon made the final round of group games kick off simultaneously, so that nobody would ever again play knowing the precise result they needed. Sixteen years later, the Tiger Cup managed to recreate the same trap from a different angle. The other group had already finished, the semifinal draw was visible, and two teams found themselves fighting for the right to come second.

Football had seen a purer version of the absurdity four years earlier. In the 1994 Caribbean Cup, a bizarre rule counted a golden goal in extra time as two, so Barbados, needing to win by two, deliberately scored an own goal to force extra time, then defended both ends at once. But that was a team exploiting a ridiculous rule exactly as written. Thailand and Indonesia were doing something else: deliberately wrecking the contest to choose their next opponent.

The response was firm. Both associations were fined 40,000 dollars. Indonesia ran its own disciplinary process, suspending the coach, Rusdy Bahalwan, and the team manager, Andrie Amien, from international football for two years, and Effendi for one. Effendi’s punishment then grew into something much larger, a lifetime ban from international football.

But the finest verdict came from the football. Indonesia got the semifinal they wanted, against Singapore, and lost it 2-1. Thailand got the one they dreaded, against Vietnam, and lost it 3-0. And Singapore, the supposedly easy draw everyone had schemed to face, beat Vietnam 1-0 in the final and became champions. Thailand and Indonesia then had to play each other again anyway, in the third-place match, which finished 3-3 before Indonesia won on penalties. Five days after producing a game neither team wanted to win, they finally played one that both of them did.

The lesson sits in three parts. The Tiger Cup was a real and welcome Southeast Asian championship, but its 1998 format built a perverse incentive into the bracket. The two teams manipulated the match for sporting advantage rather than money, which explains the motive without excusing the act. And sometimes the deepest fault lies not in what competitors do, but in what the competition quietly encourages them to do.

Yesterday: 30 August 1931, a professional match in Argentina stopped early for inequality.

Tomorrow: 1 September 1894, an English league match somehow contains three halves of football.

It is August 30, 1931, in La Plata, and Estudiantes are beating Lanús 8-0 with more than twenty minutes still to play. Then the Lanús captain, Edmundo Piaggio, decides he has seen enough. He asks the referee, Lorenzo Martínez, to end the match, and Martínez agrees. The explanation history remembers is a single, extraordinary word: desigualdad. Inequality. A professional football match, stopped because one club was simply too much better than the other.

To understand how that could happen, you have to understand how new professionalism was. Argentine football was old, its first championship played in 1891 and a durable association following in 1893, but its administration was a mess. The country had already run parallel, rival championships twice, and even the 1926 reunion left the top division bloated past thirty clubs, with unwieldy seasons and endless transfer disputes. Players were officially amateurs, yet many were quietly paid, a system Argentines nicknamed amateurismo marrón, brown amateurism. Worse, a player could not simply leave one club for another, because the registration rules let clubs keep their grip on him. In April 1931 the players struck, and their central demand was not just money but the freedom to move. The irony is that they did not win it. What the dispute killed was the pretense of amateurism. On May 18, eighteen leading clubs broke away to form the Liga Argentina de Football, and on May 31 the first openly professional season began, eighteen clubs and thirty-four rounds, with Boca Juniors on their way to becoming the first champions.

Two of those eighteen clubs were Estudiantes de La Plata and Lanús, and they could hardly have been further apart. Estudiantes, founded in 1905 and champions as far back as 1913, had one of the great forward lines in the country: Miguel Ángel Lauri, Alejandro Scopelli, Alberto Zozaya, Manuel Ferreira and Enrique Guaita, a five known as Los Profesores, the Professors. Zozaya would top the league with 33 goals and Scopelli score 31, and the club would rattle in more than a hundred on their way to third. Lanús, founded in 1915 as a community club, were living a very different first professional season, and would finish seventeenth of eighteen with 82 goals conceded. On August 30 they travelled to La Plata to meet perhaps the worst possible opponents.

The Professors started teaching at once. Zozaya scored in the tenth minute and again two minutes later, Scopelli added a third, Ferreira a fourth, Guaita a fifth, and it was 5-0 at the interval. It did not slow down. Zozaya completed his hat-trick nine minutes into the second half, Ferreira made it seven, and on 67 minutes Zozaya scored his fourth for 8-0. That is when Piaggio walked over to Martínez and asked him to end the martirio, the martyrdom. One account says the Estudiantes captain, Ferreira, agreed. Martínez blew his whistle after about sixty-eight minutes, and the match was over.

Martínez is worth a moment himself. He was no novice, having refereed at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, but he was also capable of joining the drama. Five years earlier, when a player named José Maiorano protested a decision, Martínez had punched him. Now he had made a call that looks almost unimaginable today, stopping a professional league match because the two teams were so unequal.

Was he even allowed to? The 1931 Laws make the answer more interesting than a flat no. The game was meant to last ninety minutes, and referees were explicitly warned that in a competition with a prescribed duration they could not casually shorten it. But the Laws also gave the referee a broad power to suspend or terminate a match for darkness, crowd interference, or any other cause he judged necessary. There was no eight-goal mercy rule, no line that let everyone go home once a team fell far enough behind. There was simply that phrase, other cause, and Martínez reached for it. The practical case is easy to feel. The losing captain had asked for mercy, the winning captain seemed content, and nobody was in danger. They were being spared another twenty minutes of football. But that is exactly why it looks so strange in a championship, because competitive sport never promises equality of ability, only equality of rules.

History supplied a neat rebuttal just four years later. On April 7, 1935, the same two clubs met, Estudiantes won 9-1, and the ninth goal came in the eighty-third minute. Nobody stopped it because the gap had grown embarrassing; they simply finished. That is how senior football has almost always treated a mismatch. Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Borussia Dortmund 12-0 in 1978 and played the full ninety. Australia beat American Samoa 31-0 in 2001 with goals still going in at the death. Mercy rules do exist further down the pyramid, where some youth competitions in the United States start a running clock at a five-goal gap and end the game at nine, but the crucial thing is that those rules are written down before kickoff. That is a world away from a referee looking at a professional scoreline and deciding, on the spot, that enough is enough. Which is what makes Martínez halting the Professors so genuinely rare.

Yesterday: 29 August 1970, a broken crossbar and the whole history of the goal.

Tomorrow: 31 August 1998, at the Tiger Cup, a team decides that losing is more useful than winning, and scores an own goal on purpose.

It is August 29, 1970, at the County Ground, and Swindon Town are beating Sunderland 2-0 in the Second Division. Tony Gough has marked his Swindon debut with a goal, his first Football League appearance in more than eleven years. Then, in the second half, Sunderland’s Bobby Kerr does something stranger than score. He breaks the goal. One of Swindon’s crossbars comes down, the groundsmen hurry on, and everyone is left with a wonderfully basic problem. Football needs two goals. What do you do when one of them is no longer a goal?

The answer runs through more than a century of quiet rule-making, because the goal we take for granted was invented in slow motion. Before the Football Association wrote its Laws in 1863, there was no single definition of one. The Cambridge Rules of 1848 already imagined flag-posts with a string between them, and a goal meant putting the ball under that string. The FA in 1863 did something odd by comparison: two upright posts, eight yards apart, no tape and no bar, and a goal counted if the ball passed between them at any height at all. Three years later, sanity arrived. The 1866 Laws stretched a tape across the posts eight feet up, and for the first time the goal had the dimensions we still use, eight yards wide and eight feet high. It was still two sticks and a ribbon. In 1875 a solid bar was allowed instead of tape, and in December 1882 the leading associations agreed to make the crossbar compulsory, so that by 1883 the target was a rigid rectangle.

Once the rectangle mattered, so did measuring it. In an 1888 FA Cup tie, Crewe Alexandra lost and then protested that a goal was the wrong height. The protest worked, and the FA soon insisted that such complaints be made before kickoff rather than after you had lost. Then came the question of proof: how do you know the ball went through? A Liverpool civil engineer named John Alexander Brodie had the answer. His goal net was trialled in 1891 and quickly became compulsory, so that by the 1892 FA Cup final the phrase back of the net finally had a net behind it.

But woodwork was wood, and wood breaks. The enormous Sheffield United goalkeeper William Foulke proved it in 1897 by pulling down on a crossbar and snapping it. By the late 1920s the FA was already telling clubs to paint the woodwork white, peg the nets properly, and warn players that deliberately hauling on the bar could bring a caution and, if repeated, dismissal.

By 1970 the Laws were precise. The goal was eight yards by eight feet, the posts and bar no more than five inches thick, made of wood, metal or another approved material, and permitted in almost any shape: square, rectangular, round, half-round or elliptical. The Laws even knew what to do when a crossbar broke in a competitive match. Stop play. Repair it or replace it safely. If you cannot, abandon the match. And no, you could not simply tie a rope across and carry on. That is exactly why Swindon could continue. The groundsmen restored the goal, the referee restarted the game, and the Robins finished off their 2-0 win. No emergency rewrite was needed, because football already had a rule.

Seven months later, the same rule produced the opposite ending. On April 3, 1971, Herbert Laumen of Borussia Mönchengladbach collided with the Werder Bremen goalkeeper Günter Bernard, fell backwards into the net, and snapped a wooden post. Players and officials spent about twelve minutes trying to rebuild the goal, and failed. The match was abandoned at 1-1, and because the home club could not provide a usable replacement, Bremen were awarded a 2-0 win. Gladbach still took the title that year, but the lesson stuck, and German clubs moved from wooden frames to aluminium.

Then there is the folklore. At the 1976 European Cup final at Hampden Park, Saint-Étienne hit the woodwork twice, Dominique Bathenay against the bar and Jacques Santini against a post, both of them square, both rebounding out, and Bayern Munich won 1-0. For generations, Saint-Étienne fans have sworn that round posts would have sent at least one shot in, and the poteaux carrés, the square posts, became part of the club’s identity. They eventually bought the actual Hampden posts for their museum. You will sometimes read that FIFA banned square posts in 1987, but the lawbook does not support it. Square, rectangular, round and elliptical posts were all still legal then, and they are legal now.

Color took longer to settle. At the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, many goals carried colored bands, black at several grounds and red in Mendoza, and the Laws of the 1970s did not actually require white posts at all. Only by 1990 was white made explicit, as it remains. Modern Law 1 is otherwise remarkably familiar: eight yards and 7.32 metres wide, eight feet and 2.44 metres high, no more than five inches thick, white, made of approved non-dangerous material, and firmly secured, because the modern worry is not only a bar breaking but a whole portable goal tipping over. If the crossbar breaks, you stop, and you fix it or you abandon. The basic logic the Swindon groundsmen faced in 1970 has not changed at all.

Yesterday: 28 August 1981, football’s great wandering coach dies in Vienna.

Tomorrow: 30 August 1931, a professional match in Argentina is stopped early for a reason history remembers as inequality.

It is August 28, 1981, and in Vienna Béla Guttmann dies at the age of 82. Hungarian, Jewish, a survivor of the Holocaust, and one of football’s first truly global coaches, he had crossed borders again and again, won titles on both sides of the Atlantic, carried a tactical revolution to Brazil, and broken Real Madrid’s grip on Europe with Benfica. A curse is attached to his name, but the curse is the least interesting thing about him. Guttmann did not just win matches. He helped change what a coach could be.

He grew up in Budapest around the turn of the century, the son of dance teachers, and learned to dance himself: balance, footwork, rhythm, movement. It reads like a footnote, and it was not. He joined MTK Budapest, won Hungarian titles in 1920 and 1921, and came up inside the school of Jimmy Hogan, the English coach who had brought the Scottish passing game to Central Europe. Keep the ball on the ground, pass in short combinations, prize technique over force, think about space. Those ideas would eventually run through the Magical Magyars and far beyond.

Then history began to move him. With antisemitism rising, in 1922 he left for Vienna and Hakoah, the proudly Jewish club whose name is Hebrew for strength. They won the Austrian title in 1925 and toured the world, and when 46,000 people watched them at the Polo Grounds in New York in 1926, Guttmann stayed in America. He played, taught dance, tried business, and lost heavily in the Wall Street crash of 1929. On a 1930 tour of South America, a penniless Hungarian named Imre Hirschl asked him for work; Guttmann found him a place as masseur, and Hirschl went on to become one of the great Hungarian coaching exports to Argentina and Uruguay. The network through which Hungarian football ideas travelled was often built on chance meetings like that.

Guttmann came home and became a coach. Hakoah, Enschede, Újpest, a Hungarian title and the Mitropa Cup in 1939. Then history became far bigger than football. Hungary passed anti-Jewish laws, the Nazis occupied the country in 1944, and Guttmann hid in Budapest, was sent to a forced-labor camp, escaped when deportation loomed, and survived the final months of the war in hiding. Many of his family did not. He rarely spoke of it afterward.

Then he went back to football, and barely stopped. Romania, Italy, Argentina, Cyprus, always moving, always arguing, always convinced that the coach, not a director in the grandstand, should run the club. Dismissed by AC Milan while they sat top of the table, he reportedly began inserting a clause into his contracts: if my club is first, you cannot sack me. He decided a third season at any club was fatal, and tended to leave before it could arrive.

Then came Brazil. In 1957 he took charge of São Paulo, won the state championship, and helped popularize the emerging 4-2-4: four defenders, two midfielders, four attackers, width and movement and freedom. He did not invent it. The idea ran through Márton Bukovi’s withdrawn centre-forward and Gusztáv Sebes’s Hungary before Guttmann helped transplant it. But the bridge to what followed is real. The man who coached São Paulo immediately before him was Vicente Feola, and a year later Feola led Brazil to the 1958 World Cup, playing 4-2-4, with a teenager named Pelé, and became world champions. Hungarian ideas had crossed the Atlantic and turned into something unmistakably Brazilian.

Guttmann crossed back. He won the Portuguese league with Porto in 1959, then moved straight to Benfica and built his masterpiece. He cleared out around twenty players, promoted youth, demanded authority, and built around José Águas, Mário Coluna and José Augusto. For the European Cup’s first five seasons, Real Madrid had won every one. In 1961, Guttmann’s Benfica beat Barcelona 3-2 in Bern and broke the monopoly. A year later they met Madrid themselves. Puskás scored a hat-trick, Madrid led, and then a teenager from Mozambique took the game away. Eusébio, spotted in Lourenço Marques by the Brazilian José Carlos Bauer and steered to Lisbon, scored twice. Benfica won 5-3. Back-to-back champions of Europe.

And then, because he was Guttmann, he moved again, to Peñarol in Montevideo. His life is really the argument. The passing game, the withdrawn forward, the back four, the roaming wingers: those ideas travelled because men like him travelled, and they travelled partly because twentieth-century Europe kept forcing people across its borders. He was also, unmistakably, a new kind of manager: theatrical, confrontational, mobile, the coach as protagonist rather than club servant.

The curse came later. After leaving Benfica in a dispute over money, legend says he swore they would not be European champions again for a hundred years, and Benfica have lost European final after European final since. Yet there is no good contemporary evidence he ever said it, and in a 1963 interview he predicted Benfica could win again. The trophies are real. The influence is real. The curse we can leave to mythology, which is almost perfect, because Guttmann never needed it to be fascinating.

Yesterday: 27 August 1960, rain wins a Manchester derby.

Tomorrow: 29 August 1970, Swindon are playing Millwall when the goalpost itself breaks, and we ask what the Laws say.

It is August 27, 1960, and 51,927 people have come to Maine Road for an unusually early Manchester derby. They will not see one finished. Two minutes in, Denis Law puts Manchester City ahead. Manchester United answer through Dennis Viollet and Alex Dawson and lead 2-1 at the break. Then the sky takes over. A thunderstorm rolls across Manchester, the floodlights come on in the middle of the afternoon, and the rain simply does not stop.

The referee that day is not just any official. Arthur Ellis had taken charge of the first European Cup final in 1956, and only seven weeks earlier he had refereed the first European Championship final between the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. He had worked three World Cups, run the line for Brazil against Uruguay at the Maracanã in 1950, and handled the notorious Battle of Berne in 1954. If anyone could keep a game upright in a storm, it was him.

He tries. With the pitch worsening, Ellis sends the clubs back out, because for a few more minutes football is still just about possible. In the 54th minute Joe Hayes makes it 2-2. Two minutes later, Ellis stops play, and the crowd turns. Boos, whistles, slow handclaps. He has to be escorted from the field by police. Ten minutes on, he goes back out to inspect the surface and finds several inches of standing water sitting on the grass. The ball cannot behave. Neither can the players. Ellis abandons the match, with an explanation that needs no footnotes: he cannot control the weather.

Four goals. Fifty-six minutes. All of it gone.

Here is the part that matters. Ellis was not reaching for some special waterlogged-pitch regulation. He was using one of the oldest powers a referee has. The original Laws of 1863 did not even contain a referee. The referee entered the Laws in 1881, at first only to settle disputes between the two umpires, and by 1886 he could explicitly stop a match if spectators interfered. As the game grew, that authority widened, and by the great rewrite of 1938, Law V handed the referee discretion to suspend or terminate a match on account of what it called the elements. Weather, crowd, other causes: the judgment was his. Stop it temporarily and it might restart with a dropped ball. Terminate it, and the referee simply reports what happened, leaving the competition to decide what follows.

In 1960 the Football League’s answer was blunt. The 2-2 ceased to exist. No point apiece, no goals for Law, Hayes, Viollet or Dawson. The fixture would be replayed from the very first minute. Weather had erased almost an hour of football.

None of this was new. On Christmas Day 1937, fog grew so thick at Stamford Bridge that Chelsea against Charlton was abandoned, and the Charlton goalkeeper Sam Bartram stayed at his post long after the whistle, peering into the murk, until a policeman came to tell him everyone else had gone home. And the strangest chapter of all was still only months away. In January 1961, Luton Town led Manchester City 2-0 in an FA Cup tie, then trailed 6-2 as Denis Law scored all six, before rain turned Kenilworth Road into a lake and the match was abandoned after 69 minutes. Every one of Law’s six goals vanished. Four days later the clubs began again, Law scored once more, and Luton won 3-1. If anyone ever had reason to hate the full-replay rule, it was him.

Law provides the perfect counterpoint too. In April 1974, back at City, he scored his famous backheel against United at Old Trafford. City led 1-0, United supporters invaded the pitch, and the match was abandoned late. This time the Football League let the result stand. The same club, the same derby, the same idea of an abandoned game, and a completely different consequence.

That is still how it works. Today, Law 5 lets the referee stop, suspend or abandon a match when the field, its surroundings or the weather will not allow play to continue. Law 7 then says an abandoned match is replayed unless the competition rules decide otherwise. Drainage, undersoil heating, weather radar and safety teams have transformed the game, and matches are now often postponed before anyone travels. But the questions have barely changed. Is the field safe? Can the ball move? Can the players play? If not, someone has to call a halt.

As for the derby itself, the answer took more than six months. On March 4, 1961, back at Maine Road and before another crowd above 50,000, the fixture finally went the distance. Alex Dawson and Bobby Charlton scored, David Wagstaffe and Mark Pearson replied, and United won 3-1. The match that had stood at 2-2 in August finally entered the record books in March. More than 51,000 people had turned up that first afternoon and gone home with four goals, a thunderstorm, floodlights in August, a police escort for one of the world’s most famous referees, and no result at all.

Yesterday: 26 August 2005, Australia launches a league built to last.

Tomorrow: 28 August 1981, football’s great wandering coach dies in Vienna, and we tell the story behind the curse.

It is August 26, 2005, in Newcastle, New South Wales, and before kickoff more than 13,000 people stand for a minute’s silence for Johnny Warren, former Socceroos captain, broadcaster and tireless evangelist for the Australian game, who had died nine months earlier. Nineteen minutes into Newcastle Jets against Adelaide United, Ross Aloisi crosses and Carl Veart heads past Liam Reddy for the first goal in A-League history; Adelaide win 1-0. Thousands of kilometres west, Noel Spencer’s strike gives Central Coast Mariners a 1-0 win over Perth Glory. Two matches, two away wins, and after years of crisis, Australian club football has a new national league.

Football in Australia was never new: the Socceroos first played New Zealand in 1922, and after the Second World War, migration from Britain and Europe transformed the club game, as Italian, Greek, Croatian and Serbian communities built clubs, rivalries and players. But nationally there was a problem of belonging. A federation joined FIFA in 1963, Australia repeatedly tried to join Asia and was refused, and in 1966 it helped found Oceania instead. That created a strange life: too strong for Oceania, yet forced again and again through one brutal intercontinental playoff to reach a World Cup. Australia made it in 1974, then lost that last-gate lottery to Scotland, Argentina, Iran and Uruguay in turn.

Domestically, Australia had been a pioneer. The National Soccer League, founded in 1977, was one of the country’s first truly national leagues, and it produced real clubs and players. But it never stopped changing, and underneath it the finances rotted. Across 26 years, 43 teams took part and collectively lost roughly 140 million Australian dollars. By the early 2000s the administration of the game itself was in crisis, mired in reviews, infighting and debt. Then came the Crawford Review of April 2003, with 53 recommendations, and the return of Frank Lowy, the Westfield co-founder and NSL pioneer, to head a new interim board. Soccer Australia was wound up, and John O’Neill, fresh from running Australian rugby’s 2003 World Cup, became chief executive.

Then they built a league almost from a blank sheet. From October 2003 a task force led by Andrew Kemeny asked what an Australian professional league should look like. They studied Major League Soccer, Japan’s J-League, even the relationship between England’s FA and its Premier League, then adapted it to Australia. Eight clubs with big geographic identities, from Sydney and Melbourne to Perth, Newcastle and a New Zealand side. No promotion or relegation. A 1.5-million-dollar salary cap, with one marquee player exempt. Three under-20s per squad, 21 rounds and then finals, four weekend matches in separate kickoff slots. Fox Sports signed on, Hyundai paid 10 million dollars over four years for naming rights, and Sydney FC landed the ultimate marquee in Dwight Yorke. It borrowed MLS economics, J-League city-building and Australian caps and finals, a deliberate break from the NSL model on foundations the older clubs had laid.

The first season worked. More than a million people attended, at an average of 11,627; Adelaide United finished top, and Sydney FC won the Grand Final through a Steve Corica goal. Then, less than three months later, Australia beat Uruguay on penalties to reach a World Cup for the first time in 32 years. It is tempting, and wrong, to give the young league all the credit: that golden generation of Kewell, Cahill, Viduka and Schwarzer was already in Europe. The A-League was not their maker; it was part of the same reset, alongside new governance and, on January 1, 2006, Australia’s long-sought move from Oceania into the AFC, and with it real qualifiers against Japan, Korea and Iran.

Watch the Socceroos pathway. At the 2006 World Cup only two of 23 players were based in the A-League, and two again in 2010; by 2014 it was seven. The more revealing figure came in 2022: of the 26-man squad, only six had never played in the A-League at all. Twenty had passed through it. That may be the league’s real contribution. It cannot out-pay Europe to keep its best at home, so it develops them, sells them abroad, and sometimes brings them home. At the 2026 World Cup, five of Australia’s 26 were domestically based: the league is part of the pathway, not the destination. Australia has grown far more stable too, rising from 58th in the world at the end of 2004 to a peak of 14th, winning the 2015 Asian Cup and qualifying for six straight World Cups.

At club level there are real peaks: Adelaide reached the 2008 Asian Champions League final, Western Sydney Wanderers won it in 2014, and Central Coast Mariners took the AFC Cup in 2024. But Australian clubs are no Asian superpower, ranked tenth across the confederation at the end of 2024-25. Asia raised the ceiling and also exposed the gap. The league itself remains complicated: it has survived and become vital for youth development, with under-21s playing a record 18 percent of minutes in 2024-25, yet average attendance was 8,788 and, 21 years on, promotion and relegation still has not arrived. So did the A-League fix Australian football? No, too neat. But it gave the game what the NSL no longer could: a durable national professional platform. Asia is now Australia’s football home, and Oceania its neighbourhood, and the league Johnny Warren was mourned in front of is still, two decades later, here.

Yesterday: 25 August 1928, football by numbers.

Tomorrow: 27 August 1960, and episode 300, as a great Manchester derby is beaten by the weather.

It is August 25, 1928, at Hillsborough, where The Wednesday will beat Arsenal 3-2 to open the English First Division season, and there is something odd on the players’ backs. Numbers. Down in London, Chelsea’s outfield players carry them too in a 4-0 win over Swansea Town. Today a footballer without a number would look strange; in 1928 the number was the strange part. For the first time in Football League matches, a spectator could read a shirt and work out exactly who was who. Football had discovered counting.

The story usually gets told as Herbert Chapman’s invention, and it needs rescuing from him. Chapman helped bring numbers into English league football, but he did not invent them. The trail runs back through other codes. Rugby was experimenting with numbers in the 19th century, and when New Zealand’s rugby team toured Australia in 1897 the players wore them, for the simplest of reasons: buy a scorecard, match the number to the name, and the stranger on the pitch was no longer just that bloke over there. Association football seems to have borrowed the idea. Modern research has found numbered association teams in Australia and New Zealand as early as 1904, with a 1905 photograph showing numbers on both teams. Those early numbers did not mean what they mean now: in one 1904 lineup, number 1 was the outside-right and the goalkeeper wore 11. American football was doing the same at almost the same time, Drake and Iowa State numbered in 1905, though some coaches disliked it for making stars easy to scout and seeming to celebrate individuals.

The idea then spread. In 1922 Australia and New Zealand met in Dunedin in what appears to be the first full international with both national teams numbered. In 1923 Third Lanark wore numbers touring Argentina, and in 1924 Vesper Buick wore them in a United States cup final. By the time English football reached its supposedly revolutionary moment, the rest of the world had been leaving clues for years. Even Chelsea had got there early, trialing numbers in a 1927 practice match, their manager David Calderhead explaining that he simply wanted spectators to recognize young players they did not know.

Which brings us back to Chapman. He arrived at Arsenal in 1925 and became one of football’s great modernizers, thinking about the game not just as eleven against eleven but as something people watched and listened to. There is even a tempting thread: his future assistant Tom Whittaker had toured Australia with Arsenal in 1925 and would have seen numbered footballers there. Did he carry the idea home? We cannot prove it. But on August 25, 1928, Arsenal appeared numbered at Hillsborough and Chelsea did the same at Stamford Bridge, and suddenly the basic grammar of football numbering was visible. From the old 2-3-5 formation it mapped straight down the team, 1 the goalkeeper through to 11 the outside-left. The results barely mattered; what mattered was that supporters could now credit the right man. The press noticed at once, one paper calling the numbered jerseys a success come to stay.

Eventually, yes, but slowly. Numbers got a bigger stage at the 1933 FA Cup final, where Everton wore 1 to 11 and Manchester City 12 to 22, a help to anyone high in the stands or describing 22 moving bodies on the radio. Still the resistance held, and only in 1939 did the Football League make numbered shirts standard, more than a decade after 1928.

And then something unexpected happened. A number meant to tell us who a player was began telling us what he was. Formations changed, the 2-3-5 vanished, but the numbers moved with the positions. The center-half dropped into defense and 5 became the center-back, worn eventually by Franz Beckenbauer as the majestic libero, so tied to him that Bayern Munich have now retired it. The 1 stayed with goalkeepers from Lev Yashin to Manuel Neuer. The 9 became the pure goalscorer, the “proper number 9” we still demand. The 7 became speed and glamour, above all at Manchester United, from George Best to Cristiano Ronaldo, who turned a shirt number into the trademark CR7. And the 10 became football’s creative inheritance, from Pelé through Maradona to Messi, though the most famous 10 got it by accident: at the 1958 World Cup, Brazil failed to submit their squad numbers, the organizers allocated them, and a 17-year-old reserve named Pelé was handed 10. He scored six goals, Brazil became champions, and 10 was never ordinary again. Johan Cruyff’s 14 was an accident too, a spare grabbed after injury in 1970 and kept forever.

Numbers even became things clubs retire in tribute, from Baresi’s 6 to Cruyff’s 14 to Beckenbauer’s 5, and Manchester City withdrew Marc-Vivien Foé’s 23 after his death in 2003. Argentina once tried to retire the number 10 itself for Maradona before the 2002 World Cup; FIFA said no, and Ariel Ortega wore it instead. There is a neat circle in all of it. When English club football moved to permanent squad numbers in the early 1990s, a landmark moment came in the 1993 League Cup final, between Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday, the very two clubs on the Hillsborough pitch 65 years earlier. By then the number no longer told you where a player played. It told you who he was, and sometimes who he believed himself to be.

When Fulham and Chelsea finish at Craven Cottage tonight, the first matchday of the 2026/27 Premier League season will be complete. All 20 clubs will have played once. Points will sit on the board, the early table will mean nothing and everything at the same time, and somewhere a manager will already be fielding questions about pressure. It will look like every opening weekend that came before it. It will not be one.

For the first time in almost 24 years, a round of Premier League football has come and gone without James Milner in it.

He made his top-flight debut for Leeds United on 10 November 2002, a 16-year-old sent on in the 84th minute at West Ham with an engine that would outlast almost everyone watching. Six weeks later, on Boxing Day, he scored at Sunderland and became, for a time, the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history. From there he simply never left. He appeared in 24 consecutive Premier League seasons, for Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton. Managers came and went. Formations came and went. The offside law was rewritten more than once. And every single season, without fail, Milner was somewhere in the division, quietly getting on with the job.

He retired at the end of last season, at 40, having turned down the offer of one more year. He finished as the most present footballer the Premier League has ever produced, on 658 appearances. Nobody in the competition’s history has made more. Put it another way: of the 900 Premier League matchweeks staged between his debut and his final game, he was on the pitch for 658 of them, close to three in every four, for 24 years. He passed Gareth Barry’s long-standing record along the way and did it while almost never being the headline, which is exactly what makes the number so absurd. Milner was rarely the most gifted player on the pitch. He was almost always the most useful.

The deeper you dig, the stranger the career looks. He sits second on the list of the youngest scorers in Premier League history and second on the list of the oldest, a span almost no one else in the sport can claim. He assisted more different teammates than any player the competition has ever had, which is really a story about how many squads, eras and managers he quietly served. He was the last man still playing from his own debut match, a game so distant that both Brighton and Wolves have since dropped into the third tier and climbed back out of it.

There is a neat symmetry to how it all framed itself. He arrived as a teenager who briefly held the record as the youngest scorer in the league. He left as the elder statesman of every dressing room he entered, a man who had won three league titles and the Champions League, and who could still be trusted to fill in at left-back, right-back or central midfield depending on where the hole happened to be that week. Versatility rarely gets celebrated. It should. Milner turned it into a career that lasted almost a quarter of a century.

What makes tonight quietly remarkable is not that a great player has gone. Great players leave every summer. It is that a constant has gone. For almost 24 years you could open any Premier League season, run your eye down the squad lists, and find him somewhere. He was a fixed point in a sport that reinvents itself every few months. Now the fixed point has moved, and the league will carry on exactly as it always does, because no one is ever bigger than the fixture list. Not even the man who appeared in more of it than anyone alive.

So when the whistle goes at Craven Cottage and Matchday 1 is filed away, spare a thought for the absence that will not show up on any teamsheet. Being reliable for nearly a quarter of a century is its own rare kind of greatness. James Milner built an entire career out of it, and the Premier League will feel just slightly different now that he is not somewhere inside it, quietly doing the work nobody applauds.

It is August 24, 1963, in Bremen, and the new Bundesliga is not quite behaving. Kickoff is set for 5pm, but referee Alfred Ott blows his whistle at 4:58, and 58 seconds later Lothar Emmerich races down the left, crosses, and Friedhelm “Timo” Konietzka scores the first goal in Bundesliga history. By the time 5pm formally arrives, Germany’s new national league already has a scorer. Nobody even captures it properly: the cameraman is not ready, the photographers are waiting behind the wrong goal. The competition West German football had argued about for decades had begun almost faster than anyone could document it.

The argument was the whole point. For years West Germany had resisted what England, Italy and Spain already had, a single national top division, preferring regional Oberligen that fed a national championship playoff. Franz Kremer of 1. FC Köln campaigned relentlessly for reform, Sepp Herberger wanted the country’s best players testing one another every week, and Hermann Neuberger supplied the political skill. On July 28, 1962, in Dortmund, the DFB delegates finally voted 103 to 26 for one table, one champion, one national division. Then came the hard part. 46 clubs applied for 16 places, judged on results, finances, stadiums and regional balance: five from the West, five from the South, three from the North, two from the Southwest and one from West Berlin. Bayern Munich were left out. So were Borussia Mönchengladbach and a long line of furious applicants. It was not yet open professionalism either. The new Lizenzspieler could earn more without proving he held another job, but wages and transfer fees stayed capped. Germany had built an elite league without quite admitting it had embraced the professional game.

Thirteen months after the vote, 16 clubs were ready, and eight matches kicked off on the same Saturday. In Bremen, after Konietzka’s early strike, Werder recovered to win 3-2, with Sepp Piontek, later the architect of Danish Dynamite and mourned when he died in February 2026, in their defense. Across the country, the class of 1954 passed on the torch. Max Morlock, 38, scored Nürnberg’s first Bundesliga goal in Berlin. Helmut Rahn, whose strike had won the 1954 World Cup, scored as Meidericher SV won 4-1. Hans Schäfer captained Köln, though it was 19-year-old Wolfgang Overath who opened a 2-0 win. Frankfurt produced the first Bundesliga penalty, and Uwe Seeler, quiet at Münster that day, would finish the season as its first 30-goal top scorer. Eight games, 22 goals, and 327,000 spectators: the first answer to everyone who had warned that a national league would empty the grounds. It did not.

Köln then showed exactly why Kremer had fought so hard. Already better organized, better equipped and better trained than most German clubs, and blessed with Schäfer, Overath and Christian Müller, they lost only twice in 30 matches and finished six points clear of Meidericher SV as the first Bundesliga champions. You might expect a dynasty. Instead the opposite arrived: the first seven seasons produced seven different champions, Köln, Werder Bremen, 1860 Munich, Eintracht Braunschweig, Nürnberg, Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach, with nobody defending the title until Gladbach in 1971. And here is the irony, because Bayern and Gladbach had not even been invited in 1963. Both arrived in 1965, and German football reshaped itself around them, Gladbach as the thrilling young challenger, Bayern becoming Bayern.

The reformers’ other goal arrived too. West German football grew stronger abroad. Borussia Dortmund won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1966, Bayern won three straight European Cups from 1974, Gladbach collected UEFA Cups, and Helmut Schön built national teams around players facing elite opposition every weekend. West Germany won EURO 1972 and the 1974 World Cup, the 1972 side drawing heavily on Bayern and Gladbach, which was more or less exactly what Herberger had promised: concentrate the elite, raise the weekly standard, lift the national team. East of the border, a separate football world ran inside the DDR-Oberliga, sometimes in uncanny parallel. In 1974 Bayern became European champions, Magdeburg won the Cup Winners’ Cup, and East Germany beat West Germany 1-0 at a World Cup the West would go on to win. Reunification eventually joined the two, Hansa Rostock and Dynamo Dresden entering an expanded 20-team Bundesliga for 1991-92 before it settled back to 18.

Then came dominance nobody in 1963 could have pictured. By 2026 Bayern Munich hold 34 Bundesliga titles, including 11 in a row from 2013, broken by Leverkusen in 2024 before Bayern won again in 2025 and 2026. The league became far less balanced than its opening year suggested. But the real achievement was never the identity of the champion. Before August 24, West Germany had regional leagues and a playoff. After it, there was one permanent weekly stage, one table, one national conversation, tying clubs, players, coaches and supporters together every Saturday. Sixteen clubs had finally stopped arguing about the Bundesliga, and played it.

Yesterday: 23 August 1930, three names, one stadium.

Tomorrow: 25 August 1928, English football tries a radical idea: numbers on the backs of shirts.

It is August 23, 1930 on the Heysel Plateau in Brussels, and Belgium is celebrating one hundred years of independence with the opening of a vast new national stadium. It holds around seventy thousand people and contains a football pitch, an athletics track and a wooden cycling track. It is called the Centenary Stadium, or the Jubilee Stadium. Later the world will know it simply as Heysel. And exactly sixty-five years from this day, the same ground will open again under a third name, the King Baudouin Stadium.

Belgium had become independent in 1830, and a century later Brussels wanted a monumental celebration, with sport at its heart. Belgian football already had real history, including Olympic gold at Antwerp in 1920, which remains the senior men’s team’s only major title. But the national team had no true home, so the capital wanted a stage worthy of it. There was a second motive too: Brussels was planning the enormous International Exposition of 1935, and the Heysel Plateau was being transformed into a new exhibition district, of which the stadium became the first great structure. The architect Joseph Van Neck designed it, Mayor Adolphe Max laid the foundation stone in October 1929, and less than a year later it opened on this day for the Track Cycling World Championships. Football followed three weeks later, when Belgium beat the Netherlands 4-1 in an unofficial international, a fittingly symbolic opponent for a centenary of Belgian independence. Crown Prince Leopold attended. And between those two opening dates, on the seventh of September, Leopold and Princess Astrid had a son named Baudouin. Remember that name.

From 1931 the stadium became the principal home of the Red Devils. After the Second World War the ground changed identity: the wooden cycling track had gone, reportedly used as firewood during the occupation, and in 1946 the Centenary Stadium became the Heysel Stadium, after the district around it. It grew into one of European football’s great stages. Real Madrid beat Milan there in the 1958 European Cup final, Di Stéfano scoring and Gento winning it in extra time; more European Cup finals followed; and in 1972 Heysel staged the European Championship final, where West Germany, with Beckenbauer, Netzer and Gerd Müller, beat the Soviet Union 3-0. In 1976 Anderlecht won the Cup Winners’ Cup there. By then Heysel was not merely Belgium’s national stadium but one of UEFA’s preferred showpieces.

The building itself, however, was ageing. A modern athletics track arrived in 1971 and new floodlights in 1974, but much of the basic structure was still from 1930, and this was not a uniquely Belgian problem. Across Europe the game was outgrowing stadiums built for another age: vast terraces, poor crowd circulation, weak segregation, and fences increasingly designed to contain spectators. At the same time hooliganism was becoming a serious problem, especially in English football, and European competition was exporting that violence across borders.

Then came the twenty-ninth of May 1985, and the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus. The stadium was in visibly poor condition, with parts crumbling, and both finalists had questioned whether it was suitable, but UEFA kept the match there. A disastrous arrangement placed Liverpool supporters beside a supposedly neutral section holding large numbers of Juventus fans, separated only by temporary fencing. Objects were thrown, Liverpool supporters charged, the barrier gave way, and people fleeing toward a retaining wall could neither reach the pitch nor escape quickly enough. The crush became unbearable and the wall collapsed. Thirty-nine people, most of them Juventus supporters, died, and more than six hundred were injured. The match was played anyway, because authorities feared that cancelling it might trigger even greater disorder; Juventus won 1-0, but the football was irrelevant. Heysel cannot be reduced to a single cause. Hooligan violence was central, but so were the stadium’s condition, its ticketing, its segregation, its policing and its administration. Fourteen Liverpool supporters were eventually convicted of manslaughter, and a Belgian police captain was convicted too. English clubs were banned from European competition for five years, Liverpool for six. The tragedy landed within a wider crisis: only eighteen days earlier fifty-six people had died in the Bradford City fire, and four years later came Hillsborough. The disasters had different causes, but together they made one truth impossible to ignore, that football grounds and crowd management had to change.

Heysel did not immediately disappear; Belgium kept playing internationals there until, in 1990, UEFA barred the country from hosting a European final for at least ten years. The stadium needed transformation, not repair, and with EURO 2000 approaching, it was almost completely rebuilt, only the monumental original entrance surviving. And here the royal story returns. The Crown Prince who had attended the 1930 opening became King Leopold III, whose 1940 surrender against his government’s wishes triggered the bitter postwar Royal Question and, in 1951, his abdication. His successor was the baby born between the stadium’s two opening events, Baudouin, who reigned for forty-two years. When Baudouin died in 1993, the reconstructed stadium was named after him. It reopened on the twenty-third of August 1995, exactly sixty-five years after the original, with Belgium losing 2-1 to Germany. The result hardly mattered; the ground had been born again, and it soon regained European trust, hosting the opening match of EURO 2000. Three names, one stadium, and an extraordinary amount of European history in between.

Yesterday: 22 August 1964, football comes to the sofa.

Tomorrow: 24 August 1963, sixteen clubs line up and the Bundesliga finally kicks off.

It is ten o’clock at night on August 22, 1964, and on the four-month-old channel BBC2, Kenneth Wolstenholme looks into the camera and says, “Welcome to Match of the Day.” Behind him is Anfield, where earlier that afternoon 47,620 people had watched Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-2. Tonight only about twenty thousand are watching on television, and none of them are in Liverpool itself, because BBC2 does not yet reach the city. The famous theme tune is missing too; Barry Stoller will not write it until 1970. But with that greeting, football’s long journey from the stadium to the living room took one of its most important steps.

When association football emerged in the 1860s, there were only two ways to consume it: go to the match, or read about it afterward. Newspapers became part of the game’s expansion, carrying the reputations of clubs and players far beyond the people who had stood beside the pitch, and by the late Victorian era football and the press were growing into mass entertainment together. Then sound arrived. In January 1927 the BBC broadcast live commentary of a league match from Highbury for the first time, printing a numbered diagram of the pitch in the Radio Times so listeners could follow which square held the ball. Football could now happen in London and exist simultaneously inside a home miles away, and with that came the anxiety that would haunt the game for decades: if people can follow the match at home, why would they buy a ticket?

Television made the question more frightening still. The BBC televised football before the Second World War, from a staged Arsenal practice match in 1937 to a live England-Scotland game and an FA Cup final in 1938, but the war shut British television down and the relationship afterward developed cautiously. Big occasions were tolerated; regular league football was another matter. The BBC showed tiny filmed highlights inside Sports Special from 1955, and when ITV tried a genuinely radical live-league deal in 1960, it effectively lasted a single match before clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham refused the cameras and the experiment collapsed. Football remained convinced that television would empty the terraces.

Technology kept moving anyway. By 1962 regional ITV companies were producing local highlights, and videotape meant the game no longer had to wait for film to be processed. Then, in April 1964, Britain gained a new channel, BBC2, broadcasting on a sharper 625-line system with electronic cameras, videotape editing, and something just as valuable, space in the schedule. The new head of BBC Sport, Bryan Cowgill, believed television would help football rather than harm it, and he had to convince the fiercely protective Football League secretary, Alan Hardaker. There was a deadline in the background too: England would host the World Cup in 1966, and the BBC needed crews who knew how to televise football, so Match of the Day could double as their training ground.

Even with agreement, the League stayed nervous. The identity of the filmed match was kept secret until four in the afternoon, once supporters were already inside grounds, so nobody could stay home knowing Liverpool-Arsenal would be on television, and at the last moment the League moved the broadcast from its planned early-evening slot to ten at night. The production itself was frantic. The editor, Alec Weeks, later recalled only six editing machines in the whole of Television Centre and described the process as butchery; one early cut was so abrupt that the Liverpool captain, Ron Yeats, seemed to take a throw-in and then head his own throw. Fortunately the football was superb. Roger Hunt scored the first goal ever shown on Match of the Day, Gordon Wallace added a second, Arsenal fought back to 2-2, and Wallace won it near the end, prompting Wolstenholme to suggest it might be called the match of the century rather than the match of the day.

The suspicion did not vanish, and in 1965 several clubs tried to stop the programme returning, forcing a compromise that fixed it after ten at night with the featured game kept secret. Then came 1966. England won the World Cup, football television exploded, and Match of the Day moved to BBC1 where nearly the whole country could see it. Colour, replays and a parade of famous voices followed, along with Barry Stoller’s theme in 1970, and the idea travelled abroad, to West Germany’s Sportschau, Italy’s Novantesimo Minuto and France’s Téléfoot. English football itself began to travel too. From late 1969, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish television pooled money to buy live English league matches, and a generation of Scandinavians - myself included - grew up supporting English clubs they lived hundreds of miles from, their loyalties shaped by the fixtures they could actually see, initially a curious diet of Midlands clubs the giants only visited.

The value of the pictures then began to explode, through the rights wars of the 1980s, the arrival of Sky and the Premier League in 1992, and on to today’s enormous deals. And the century-old fear that nobody would come? The 2025-26 Premier League recorded its highest total attendance in history while being broadcast in 189 countries to an estimated 1.9 billion followers. Television did not replace the stadium. It made the stadium globally visible.

It is August 21, 1965, at Burnden Park, and Bolton Wanderers are eleven minutes into their match with Charlton Athletic when the Charlton goalkeeper, Mike Rose, is injured. For almost the entire history of the Football League, that meant one thing: no replacement. But this afternoon is different. Keith Peacock takes off his tracksuit and comes on, John Hewie goes into goal, and for the first time in Football League history a player has been legally replaced during a match. The substitution, so normal today that it is hard to imagine the game without it, had finally arrived, after seventy-seven Football League seasons of doing without it.

The absence was there from the very start. The original Laws of 1863 contained no mechanism for replacing an injured player, and the consequences appeared almost at once. In the first FA Cup final, in 1872, the Royal Engineers’ Edmund Cresswell broke his collarbone after about ten minutes; with no substitute available he was parked uselessly on the wing, and Wanderers won 1-0. That was not a mistake in the system. It was the system. The eleven who started were expected to finish, and the principle survived even after professionalism was legalized in 1885. People bent it occasionally, one 1885 cup tie saw Notts Rangers allow a reserve named West to replace an injured opponent, but it was a courtesy, never a right.

The Football League arrived in 1888 and carried the same flaw. On the opening day, Everton’s first League match against Accrington saw the visitors’ goalkeeper injured; he had to leave, an outfield player took over in goal, and Everton exploited the extra man to win. An injury was already deciding matches on day one.

There was another reason players fought so hard not to be the injured man: money. Professional footballers of that era were nothing like today’s guaranteed millionaires. Selection affected earnings directly, through appearance payments and bonuses layered on top of a modest weekly wage. In the 1930s a player might earn a small basic wage and a meaningful extra sum simply for holding his first-team place. So an injury could cost far more than a Saturday afternoon: lose your place, lose your bonus, and perhaps watch a replacement play well enough that the place never comes back. Histories of football medicine are full of players explaining why they carried on hurt, out of fear of losing their spot, loyalty to teammates, and hard financial need. So they strapped themselves up, took injections and played through pain, not necessarily fit, just fit enough.

The debate never quite died. In 1923 the Football Association itself persuaded the game’s lawmakers that an injured player could be replaced, but only by prior agreement and, crucially, not in a competitive match. That qualification captures football’s whole dilemma. The medical logic was obvious; the competitive fear was paralyzing. What if a player only pretended to be injured? What if a manager simply wanted to remove someone playing badly? So the casualties kept coming, through the 1953 and 1957 FA Cup finals and right up to Gerry Byrne playing on with a broken collarbone in the 1965 final. The wall was cracking, though. In 1957 FIFA formally pressed the lawmakers to allow substitutes in competition; the four British associations voted it down four to one, but the compromise that followed let each national association decide the question for its own competitions. By the 1960s the Laws were no longer the obstacle. English football’s own reluctance was.

Finally, in June 1965, the Football League clubs voted, thirty-nine to ten, for one substitute from the new season, for injury only, no tactical changes. It took eleven minutes of the new era for Mike Rose to get hurt and Keith Peacock to make history. It did not rescue Charlton, who lost 4-2. Across the League that day thirteen substitutes were used and eight of their teams lost; some crowds even booed the idea as unsporting. But at Barrow, a substitute named Bobby Knox came on and scored, the first in Football League history to do so, and the future was suddenly visible. The bench was already becoming more than insurance.

The injury-only rule quickly created its own problem, because nobody could reliably say how hurt a player really was, and by 1967 English football allowed tactical substitutions. That changed management forever, turning the bench into a weapon. David Fairclough came off it to knock Saint-Étienne out of Europe in 1977 and earn the nickname Supersub. Patrick Kluivert won the 1995 European Cup for Ajax as a substitute; Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored both Manchester United goals from the bench in the 1999 final; Éder won EURO 2016 for Portugal with a substitute’s goal against the host nation. The rule invented to stop an injury ruining a team had become one of the manager’s greatest tools, and after seventy-seven seasons of the original eleven being expected to see it through, the bench had finally entered the game.

Stockholm, Augst 20, 1916. Around sixteen thousand people fill the Olympic Stadium to watch Sweden play a group of Americans who have crossed the Atlantic in the middle of the First World War. Sweden score after seven minutes. Then Dick Spalding equalizes, Charles Ellis puts the visitors ahead, and Harry Cooper makes it 3-1. Sweden pull one back late, but the final score stands: Sweden 2, United States 3. With that result, quietly, the United States men’s national team is born, on another continent, in the middle of a world war.

American soccer was far older than the American national team, and that gap explains a great deal. Long before there was any countrywide structure, there were soccer towns, where immigration and industry set football communities beside the factories and mills: Kearny, Fall River, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Bethlehem. Scottish textile workers had made West Hudson in northern New Jersey one of the earliest strongholds, and in 1884 the American Football Association was created. It sounded national, but it was really a creature of the Northeast. When a team calling itself the United States played a Canadian selection in 1885 and again in 1886, every American player came from a New Jersey club, and neither match is recognized today as a full international. America had representative football long before it had the machinery to build a national team.

The obstacle was institutional: nobody could agree who governed the sport. Into that vacuum stepped Thomas Cahill, a St. Louis-raised organizer who became one of the central architects of the American game. In 1911 a rival body, the American Amateur Football Association, appeared with Cahill as its secretary, and it made an audacious move almost at once: it applied to FIFA. Cahill crossed the Atlantic in 1912 to press the case in Stockholm, only to be told to go home and come back with a single organization representing the whole game. That is more or less what happened. In April 1913, representatives gathered at New York’s Astor House and created the United States Football Association, the body we now know as U.S. Soccer. FIFA granted provisional recognition that August and full membership in 1914.

That 1912 trip mattered for another reason. In Stockholm, Cahill had built a relationship with a Swedish administrator and FIFA vice-president named Kornerup, and later sent him a copy of the American soccer guide. In early 1916 a letter came back, inviting the Americans to send a team to Scandinavia with a four-thousand-dollar guarantee to finance the trip. The invitation ran in a straight line from that first visit four years earlier.

There was, however, an enormous complication. It was 1916, Europe was at war, and the Berlin Olympics had been cancelled. Sweden, Norway and the United States were all neutral, but the Atlantic was dangerous. Bethlehem Steel, the reigning American champions and apparently Sweden’s preferred guests, flatly refused to risk sending their team across an ocean their own company was helping to arm; a German U-boat had sunk the Lusitania only the year before. So the young federation assembled a national selection instead, fourteen players, twelve American-born, captained by Tommy Swords of Fall River. They sailed from Hoboken on the twenty-sixth of July aboard a ship named for a Danish king, and while they were still at sea, the United States and Denmark signed the treaty to purchase the Danish West Indies, driven partly by fear that Germany might seize those islands for a Caribbean naval base. During the very voyage that created the national team, neutral America was engaging with Scandinavia and worrying about German submarines in the same breath.

The football lived up to the drama. Before the official match, the Americans drew 1-1 with a Stockholm selection, and King Gustav V, watching from the royal box, summoned Cahill at halftime to thank the visitors for making such a journey in wartime. Five days later came the real thing, and Spalding’s equalizer, an awkward high ball that bounced over the goalkeeper, became the first official goal in the national team’s history. Ellis and Cooper finished the job.

And then, almost immediately, it stopped. There were no 1916 Olympics, America entered the war in 1917, and the national team did not play another international until 1924. That stop-start rhythm would define American men’s soccer for the better part of a century: a boom in the 1920s, a World Cup semi-final in 1930, the miracle over England in 1950, then a forty-year absence, the rise and collapse of the North American Soccer League, and finally the more durable era of the 1994 World Cup and Major League Soccer. The United States reached the last sixteen as hosts in 2026 before losing to Belgium. The lesson buried in 1916 is that population was never really the problem. America did not lack footballers. It lacked continuity, the chance to build from one generation to the next instead of starting over, the one thing its pioneers, crossing a wartime ocean to be born abroad, never had.

Yesterday: 19 August 1950, the day all 22 players went to jail.

Buenos Aires, August 19, 1950. Huracán against Vélez Sarsfield, five minutes left, Vélez leading 3-1. A free kick near the Huracán area brings two players together, Pablo Mallegni of Vélez and the Huracán defender Lino Badin, and they begin trading punches. Then Huracán’s goalkeeper, Héctor Ricardo, sprints the length of his half to join in. Within moments the pitch at Parque Patricios is not a football match but a brawl, all twenty-two players swinging at one another, with trainers, masseurs and assorted staff piling in behind them. The fight lasts around five minutes. And when the police finally restore order, they do something almost unheard of: they arrest every player on the field.

To appreciate the absurdity, you have to know what Argentine football had already tried. The game had been professional since 1931, and it was a fiercely physical culture, with dismissals for rough play and the occasional police involvement long before this afternoon. By the late 1940s the violence around matches had grown serious enough that the association reached for a remarkable fix: it imported referees from Britain, hoping foreign officials would bring stronger, more independent control. By 1950 fourteen British referees were working in Argentina. One of them, an Englishman named John Meade, was in charge at Parque Patricios. The game he had been brought in to control was about to become completely uncontrollable.

The season around it was turbulent too. The great players’ strike of 1948 had helped drive talent abroad, with Pedernera, Di Stéfano, Rossi and others heading to Colombia. Back home, Vélez sat sixth but harbored ambitions, their side including a twenty-three-year-old named Osvaldo Zubeldía, who would one day build the great Estudiantes team that won three straight Copa Libertadores titles. On this day, he was simply one of the men about to be arrested. Huracán, meanwhile, were fighting near the bottom, having barely survived relegation the year before. Title hopes on one side, survival pressure on the other, and a match already described in the contemporary press as played in a climate of violence.

The football had been tense throughout. Huracán scored early, Vélez levelled through José Menéndez, who scored again after the break, before Carmelo Nápoli made it 3-1 with about ten minutes to go. Then came the free kick, the punches, the goalkeeper’s charge, and the collapse of order. When it was over the players separated and sat on opposite sides of the pitch, waiting for the referee to restart the match. But Meade had gone. He and his assistants had retreated during the chaos, and fifteen minutes passed before an interpreter appeared to announce that the match was suspended, Vélez 3, Huracán 1, at eighty-five minutes.

Then the truly extraordinary part. The federal police decided this was no longer merely a football matter and detained all twenty-two players, taking them first to a police station and then, after midnight, to the municipal detention facility at Villa Devoto. Opponents who had been trying to hurt each other an hour earlier now spent the night as fellow prisoners. Club directors negotiated, families gathered, and on Sunday evening, after almost a full day behind bars, the players were released. Football was not finished with them. The association’s disciplinary tribunal suspended every one of the twenty-two, with Huracán bans running as high as fifteen matches, and stood the referee down for a round. Both clubs, forced to field patched-up teams, saw their seasons unravel.

The obvious question is whether this was unique. Twenty-two players arrested after one match is extraordinary, but Argentine football has since found ways to top even that. In 2011, a lower-division match between Claypole and Victoriano Arenas produced a mass brawl and thirty-six red cards, still the highest reported total in a senior game. And this is not an Argentine monopoly: earlier in 2026, a state championship final in Brazil ended with twenty-three red cards issued after a fight. Football has built ever more sophisticated machinery to control violence, cards, tribunals, video, retrospective bans, and still no regulation has invented a switch that turns emotion off at the final whistle.

Which leads somewhere uncomfortable and current. The 2026 World Cup final, which Spain won 1-0 after extra time, ended with a mass altercation among players and staff, and FIFA opened formal proceedings. Argentine writers reached for the concept of aguante, a culture of endurance and refusing to retreat, to explain it, while carefully noting that similar behavior appears everywhere football is played. That is the real lesson of a night in Villa Devoto seventy-six years earlier. Football can impose a single written code on the whole planet. What it cannot do is make billions of people feel the game in exactly the same way, and the gap between the written rule and the unwritten one is where these afternoons keep happening.

Yesterday: 18 August 2004, Brazil and Haiti in O Jogo da Paz.

Tomorrow: 20 August 1916, the United States plays its first international, in Stockholm, in the middle of a world war.

On August 18, 2004, the reigning world champions moved through the streets of Port-au-Prince in United Nations armored vehicles. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos. Tens of thousands of Haitians lined the route, waving Brazilian flags alongside their own, pressing toward a convoy with UN painted down its sides. A few hours later Haiti played Brazil at the Stade Sylvio Cator, lost 6-0, and celebrated almost every goal. Because the score was never the point. This was O Jogo da Paz, the Game of Peace.

Haiti had begun 2004 marking the bicentenary of an astonishing achievement: on the first of January 1804, enslaved people had defeated Napoleon’s forces and founded the world’s first Black republic. Two hundred years later there was little to celebrate. The country was desperately poor, and its politics had turned violent. An armed rebellion that began in February spread until rebels threatened the capital, and on the twenty-ninth President Jean-Bertrand Aristide left the country, later insisting he had effectively been forced out. More than three hundred people had died in the violence around his removal. A new United Nations mission, its military component led by a Brazilian commander, arrived that summer to restore security and help disarm armed groups.

It was Haiti’s interim prime minister, Gérard Latortue, who reportedly floated the idea that a few Brazilian footballers might achieve more than thousands of peacekeepers. There was real logic beneath the joke. Haitians loved Brazilian football, not casually but passionately, adopting the Seleção as a second national team through the eras of Pele, Zico, Romario and Ronaldo. Brazil was already leading the UN military mission; now its most beloved cultural export could arrive alongside the soldiers, and Brazil’s president backed the plan.

One early proposal has become the most misremembered part of the story. Officials publicly discussed trading a gun for a ticket: hand in a weapon, receive admission to watch the world champions. It was a genuine disarmament idea, but it was abandoned before the match, once someone recognized the obvious flaw. If a firearm became the route into the most desirable event in the country, the people most likely to fill the stadium would be the very armed groups causing the violence. So no weapons were exchanged for entry. The match became a broader symbol of reconciliation instead.

The football itself was a party wrapped around a rout. Around fifteen thousand people squeezed into a freshly painted stadium, with thousands more locked outside. Latortue had promised a thousand dollars to the first Haitian to score against Brazil, but nobody told Ronaldinho to keep things polite. Roger opened the scoring. Then, in the thirty-second minute, Ronaldinho produced the moment everyone remembers, dribbling through five Haitians including the goalkeeper before rolling the ball into an empty net. The stadium erupted, not in anger but in appreciation, applauding the man who had just scored against them. Roger added a third before halftime; Ronaldinho completed a hat-trick after the break; Nilmar made it six. Carlos Alberto Parreira, a World Cup winning coach who had seen enormous nights, later said that if anyone ever asked him for the strongest emotion football had given him, this was it.

It would be dishonest to pretend the day did more than it did. It did not disarm Haiti, resolve the political crisis, or heal the country’s institutions. The proof came fast: serious violence returned to Port-au-Prince within six weeks. The UN mission stayed until 2017, and its legacy became deeply controversial, with accusations of excessive force and sexual abuse, and a cholera epidemic introduced by peacekeepers after the catastrophic 2010 earthquake. A football match did not save Haiti, and it is important not to claim that it did.

But that is not the same as claiming it accomplished nothing. For one afternoon it produced something exceptionally rare in that country: a shared national event, in which people from different political worlds occupied the same emotional space. It drew international attention, and it changed how some Haitians encountered a foreign military presence, the same armored vehicles carrying Ronaldo and Ronaldinho rather than only soldiers. It was soft power in its purest form, because Brazil brought something no deployment can manufacture: affection that already existed, and for ninety minutes it used that affection well.

There is a quiet coda. Twenty-two years later, Haiti returned to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, and were drawn against Brazil once more. This time there were no tanks and no peacekeeping mission. They met in Philadelphia because both had qualified for the biggest tournament on earth, and Brazil won 3-0. The result hurt again. But the relationship had changed, and this time Haiti arrived not as a country to be visited, but as a team that had earned its place.

Budapest, August 17, 2005. Argentina lead Hungary 2-1, and with just over an hour gone José Pékerman decides the moment has come. Lisandro López walks off. An eighteen-year-old from Rosario walks on, wearing number 18, not the number 10 that already carries the weight of a nation. His name is Lionel Messi, and this is his senior debut for Argentina.

It lasts 47 seconds. Messi takes the ball, turns, and accelerates, doing the thing he will spend the next two decades doing to defenders. Hungary’s Vilmos Vanczák grabs a fistful of his shirt. Messi swings an arm back to free himself, catches Vanczák, and the German referee Markus Merk reaches for red. Forty-seven seconds after coming on, the most anticipated teenager in world football is walking back off, dismissed on his international debut. He would later admit the night was nothing like the one he had dreamed about.

What makes that disaster almost a footnote is the weight the boy was already carrying, and the number he was not yet allowed to wear. Argentina’s 10 is not simply a squad number; it is an inheritance. It became one almost by accident, when the 1978 squad were handed shirts alphabetically and Mario Kempes happened to receive the 10 before scoring his country to a first World Cup. Diego Maradona took it next and turned an accident into a myth. Then came Ariel Ortega, then Juan Román Riquelme, each asked to do the same impossible thing: take the ball and invent something. Messi arrived into that lineage as another small, left-footed genius, and the comparisons to Maradona had begun long before Budapest.

His route there was improbable. As a boy at Newell’s Old Boys he was so small that a growth-hormone deficiency threatened his career before it started. When Barcelona invited him for a trial at 13 he stood barely four and a half feet tall, and some inside the club wondered whether an expensive medical gamble on a tiny Argentine was worth it. Carles Rexach thought it was, and famously scribbled Barcelona’s commitment onto a napkin in December 2000. The family moved to Catalonia, and the boy began proving everyone right, racing through the youth teams, reaching the first team at 16, and then, in the summer of 2005, dominating the Under-20 World Cup so completely that he took both the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot and left as a world champion. He was still 18 when Pékerman called him up.

There was even a strange symmetry to the opponent. Maradona had also made his Argentina debut against Hungary, coming on in the sixty-second minute back in 1977. Twenty-eight years later Messi came on in the sixty-third, against the same country, and lasted less than a minute.

The recovery is the part that beggars belief. His first Argentina goal arrived the following March, and at the 2006 World Cup he came off the bench to assist and score in a 6-0 win. In 2009, with Maradona now his coach, the inheritance became literal: Riquelme was gone, and the number 10 passed to Messi for good. At Barcelona he became almost impossible to describe, a blur of league titles and Champions Leagues and Ballons d’Or. Argentina, though, stayed cruel. A World Cup final lost to Germany in 2014. Two Copa America finals lost in a row. In 2016 he missed a penalty in a shootout and announced he was finished with the national team, at twenty-nine.

He came back, and the story turned. Copa America at last in 2021, at the Maracana, against Brazil. Then Qatar in 2022, where a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia threatened collapse before Messi dragged Argentina all the way to the trophy that had defined his entire adult life. Then Copa America again in 2024. And then, at thirty-nine, one more World Cup in 2026, where he produced eight goals and four assists and carried Argentina to another final. Spain beat them 1-0 after extra time, but Messi left the tournament having rewritten the record book once more: thirty-four World Cup appearances and twenty-one World Cup goals, more than anyone in history, and a third World Cup final to his name.

It is a career that began, internationally, with a red card after forty-seven seconds, and ended among the handful of names where the argument stops being about who was great and becomes about how you compare greatness across eras at all. Kempes, Maradona, Ortega, Riquelme, Messi. Every era ends, and sooner or later the shirt will pass again. The only open question is whether Argentina’s next great number 10 is already playing, or has not yet been born.

Yesterday: 16 August 1936, the tackle that ended in a police station.

Tomorrow: 18 August 2004, Brazil visit Haiti for O Jogo da Paz, the Game of Peace.

It is August 16, 1936. Buenos Aires. San Lorenzo against Independiente. Seventeen minutes in, San Lorenzo’s Arturo Arrieta passes Independiente’s Fermin Lecea, crosses from the left, and Ruben Cavadini makes it 1-0. Seven minutes later they meet again. This time Arrieta is brought down. He does not get up: his left fibula is broken. The match continues, and San Lorenzo win 2-1. Then, at the final whistle, something happens that you really do not expect at a football match. The police arrest Lecea. By that evening an Argentine newspaper reports that Lecea is detained, at the disposal of the judge.

But how did we get here? Argentine football had been professional since 1931, and by 1936 it was an elite league with Arsenio Erico at Independiente. The 1936 season was split into two one-round tournaments. San Lorenzo had just won the first, the Copa de Honor, and everybody now started again from zero in the Copa Campeonato.

And this was a physical game. The 1936 records are blunt: players expelled for rough play, for attacking opponents, for fighting each other. There were no cards yet, but referees could still send men off. And sometimes discipline did not end the matter. Two years earlier, two players in a Velez against Boca match were expelled for fighting and then taken to the police station. So Lecea’s arrest would be extraordinary, but not without precedent.

Now the two protagonists. Arturo Arrieta was a great early San Lorenzo left winger, at the club from 1927 to 1939. Fermin Lecea came from a different tradition: born in the Basque Country, raised in Argentina, a former welterweight boxing champion. El Grafico later listed him among the surgeons of Argentine football, the hard men, though he could genuinely play. Their positions explain the collisions. In the 2-3-5, Arrieta was the left winger and Lecea the right back, directly opposite, one paid to stop the other.

On August 16, Arrieta wins the first exchange, setting up Cavadini, then comes the collision that breaks his fibula. The contemporary report describes Lecea as having intervened in the play that caused the fracture. That wording matters. We know the injury, we know Lecea was involved, we know what the police did. What we cannot safely reconstruct is intent. Referee Jose Galli does not expel Lecea. And because there were no substitutions in 1936, Arrieta could not be replaced, so San Lorenzo played on a man short and still scored again. Then Galli blew the whistle, and football jurisdiction gave way to state jurisdiction. Lecea was taken to the 34th precinct, where a judicial investigation was opened.

Here the record becomes frustrating. Lecea was arrested and placed before a judge, but there is no reliable evidence of a conviction, a sentence, or even a night in a cell. And one fact tells us a lot: seven days later he started for Independiente against Velez. Arrieta’s recovery was longer, but the fracture did not end his career. The arrest still raises a question the Laws have spent generations managing: where does football violence end and ordinary violence begin? Football later added cards, substitutions, and serious-foul-play rules. But football law and criminal law remain different things, and courts have occasionally decided a red card was not enough. Chris Kamara was convicted of grievous bodily harm in 1988. Duncan Ferguson became the first British professional jailed for an on-field offence, serving forty-four days after a 1994 headbutt. Rachid Bouaouzan got a suspended sentence after a horrific 2004 tackle in the Netherlands. And one famous case belongs here precisely because it is different. In 2001 Roy Keane launched a vicious challenge on Alf-Inge Haaland and was sent off, later fined heavily by the FA after his autobiography, but never arrested. And one myth needs correcting: the tackle did not destroy Haaland’s knee on the spot. Haaland got up, finished the derby, and played for Norway four days later. The tackle struck his right leg; the degenerative condition that ended his career was in his left knee. None of that makes the challenge less appalling. It just makes the history accurate. So the question survives: when does something done in a match stop being football?

Yesterday: 15 August 1948, Colombia turns professional.

Tomorrow: 17 August 2005, an 18-year-old Lionel Messi makes his senior Argentina debut, and is sent off 47 seconds later.

It is August 15, 1948, two days after Sweden won Olympic gold in London. This morning we are outside Medellin, in Colombia, at the San Fernando racetrack. Atletico Municipal against Universidad. Fifteen minutes in, Rafael Serna scores a penalty. Carlos Rodriguez adds another. Atletico Municipal win 2-0. And Serna’s goal is much bigger than the opening goal of a match. It is the first goal ever scored in Colombia’s professional football league. Today is Fecha 1. Ten clubs. A new national championship. And the beginning of an institution that will give Colombia Santa Fe, Millonarios, Atletico Nacional, then El Dorado, Di Stefano, and some of the most extraordinary football history anywhere in the world.

But how did we get here? Colombia had played football for decades, but the game developed regionally. The first major structure grew on the Caribbean coast, the Liga del Atlantico was founded in 1924, and Colombia entered FIFA in 1936. Yet one question kept dividing the game: who actually controlled Colombian football? Barranquilla? Bogota? Medellin? Cali? By 1939 there was already a battle over whether the federation should stay in Barranquilla or move to Medellin. This was not one integrated football country, but a collection of ambitious regional cultures arguing about who ran the game.

Underneath that argument, another revolution was coming: money. Clubs wanted professionalism, players wanted to be paid, and foreign touring teams showed what football could become as entertainment. In January 1948, Bogota staged an international tournament with River Plate and Velez Sarsfield, and one Velez match reportedly drew around twelve thousand paying spectators. The message was obvious: there was a market here.

Then Colombia itself exploded. On April 9, 1948, the Liberal political leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitan was assassinated in Bogota. The Bogotazo followed. Rioting devastated large parts of the capital, and Colombia entered the terrible period remembered as La Violencia, years of partisan bloodshed. The professional league was not created because of the assassination; the idea already existed. But a national mass spectacle suddenly looked useful in a country desperately short of shared experiences. In late June, representatives of ambitious clubs gathered in Barranquilla and created the Division Mayor del Futbol Colombiano. Dimayor. Notice the geography: Alfonso Senior came from Bogota, Humberto Salcedo from Cali, Jorge Osorio Cadavid from Medellin. This was not simply Bogota taking football from everyone else. It was professional clubs from Colombia’s major cities challenging an older regional structure. But Bogota did win something: Dimayor set its headquarters there.

Now they needed an actual national league, which was not trivial in a country divided by mountains and enormous distances. Avianca reportedly gave the clubs a large reduction on air fares, so professional football in Colombia would literally have to fly. Ten teams entered, among them Santa Fe and Millonarios from Bogota, America and Deportivo Cali, Junior from Barranquilla, and Universidad, a Bogota club that played its early home matches in Pereira. And now the match. Atletico Municipal, the club we know today as Atletico Nacional, played Universidad at the San Fernando racetrack. Serna scored that first professional goal from the spot, and Carlos Rodriguez made it 2-0. Across the country, Fecha 1 came alive: Millonarios destroyed Once Deportivo 6-0, and the first champion would be Santa Fe.

And 1948 built the machine that made 1949 possible, because one year later everything went crazy. Dimayor operated outside the normal FIFA transfer structure, and that created an extraordinary opportunity. Adolfo Pedernera came. Then Nestor Rossi. Then Alfredo Di Stefano. Millonarios became the Ballet Azul, and other clubs raided Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, and beyond. El Dorado, the great gold rush, could not happen until Dimayor existed. August 15, 1948 built the marketplace, and 1949 blew the doors off it. Eventually the international system closed the loophole, the imported stars left, and Colombian football had to discover what survived when the circus moved on. And it kept living inside the country around it: through La Violencia, through El Dorado, through the later narco era, through the great national team of the 1990s, and through the Copa America triumph of 2001. Colombian football has never existed outside Colombian history. Some things change. Some relationships endure.

Yesterday: 14 August 1965, two Bundesliga harbingers.

Tomorrow: 16 August 1936, a tackle in Buenos Aires that ends in a police station.

It is August 14, 1965. The Bundesliga’s third season kicks off, and this one is different. The league has expanded from sixteen clubs to eighteen. Bayern Munich are finally in. Borussia Monchengladbach are finally in. And Berlin has a representative nobody expected: Tasmania Berlin. Two matches give the day its meaning. In Munich, 1860 Munich beat Bayern 1-0. In Berlin, Tasmania beat Karlsruher SC 2-0. One is the beginning of 1860’s greatest season. The other is the strangest false dawn in Bundesliga history.

Start with the league itself. The Bundesliga was voted into existence in 1962: one national professional table, one champion, one top division. But the first Bundesliga was not simply the best sixteen clubs by one clean formula. There were regional quotas, financial criteria, sporting criteria, stadiums, and politics. One rule mattered enormously in Munich: only one club from a given city. So in 1963, 1860 Munich were chosen and Bayern were not. That sounds insane now, but in 1963 it made sense. 1860 were the stronger immediate case. They had momentum, won the DFB-Pokal in 1964, and reached the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1965, losing at Wembley to West Ham. A real team, ready now.

Bayern, meanwhile, were still becoming Bayern. They had won the German championship in 1932 and had history, but they had also been damaged in the Nazi era, when their Jewish president Kurt Landauer was forced out and persecuted. After the war, Bayern were not yet the national machine. They were a club with a future still waiting for permission. And that future was already forming: Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller. Beckenbauer is one of football’s great sliding-door stories. As a boy he was expected to join 1860. Then, in a youth match, a 1860 player slapped him. The famous Watschn. Beckenbauer went to Bayern instead.

Now Berlin, where the young league became political. Hertha Berlin had been picked for the first Bundesliga partly because West Berlin mattered in Cold War terms. But in 1965 Hertha’s license was revoked over illegal payments, and the DFB still wanted a Berlin club in the league, for symbolism as much as sport, in a city isolated inside East Germany with the Wall already up. Tennis Borussia missed out in the play-offs. Spandauer SV were approached and declined. Then came Tasmania Berlin, third in the Berlin Regionalliga. Not ready. Part-time. Players pulled back from holidays, a squad asked to jump from regional football into the Bundesliga almost overnight. The league expanded to eighteen, which also saved Karlsruhe and Schalke from going down. So when Tasmania hosted Karlsruhe, the absurdity was doubled: a patched league had created a patched fixture.

Now the matches. Munich first, at Grunwalder Strasse, forty-four thousand, sold out. Bayern’s Bundesliga debut, with Maier, Beckenbauer, and Muller all starting. And 1860 win 1-0, Timo Konietzka scoring. This is not little brother beating big brother. Not yet. This is the established Bundesliga side beating the new neighbor. Then Berlin, the Olympiastadion, more than eighty-one thousand people. Tasmania against Karlsruhe. For a while it is goalless. Then Wulf-Ingo Usbeck scores. Then he scores again. Tasmania 2, Karlsruhe 0. The amateur outsiders have won their debut, and for one day they look like a fairy tale.

Two futures were planted that day. First, 1860’s win was a true harbinger. They won the Bundesliga that season, the only league title in their history, finishing ahead of Dortmund and Bayern. Bayern were excellent but not yet supreme. They took the cup that season, then the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1967, the Bundesliga in 1969, and then the 1970s empire. The opening derby loss did not stop Bayern. It simply reminds us that empires are not born already wearing crowns. Tasmania were the opposite. That 2-0 was almost the whole miracle. They did not win again for thirty-one matches. They finished last, with two wins, four draws, twenty-eight defeats, fifteen goals scored, and one hundred and eight conceded. The crowds collapsed from eighty-one thousand to 827 for a January match against Gladbach. Tasmania became the Bundesliga’s permanent measuring stick for disaster. Whenever a team starts terribly, people still ask: are they worse than Tasmania?
