Over the 92 episodes we’ve done, there have obviously been times where we’ve crept over to one another’s sides (him, Almost Famous; me, Rambo, Django or T2), but also some of my favorite moments are when Sheek is like, I don’t get it, I don’t like it, I hated this shit, I hate you for even suggesting it.

Which brings us to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the movie we watched this week about the toxic relationship that Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey want to forget and then fight to just remember. Some people love it, but Sheek fucking hated it. And because he hated it so much, it makes for one of the most fascinating episodes we’ve had in a while.

But Styles I was surprised by. Styles will usually go along for the ride and find things he likes — especially when it comes to inventive filmmaking. But in this case, Styles’ take was, this is an incredibly white movie and all it needed was one (1) Black character to talk sense into them. “She left, she doesn’t want to hear from you, you have 30 minutes to cry, we’re going out to the club to meet someone new.”

Very valid!

Meanwhile, I think Eternal Sunshine hit for a lot of people of a certain age because that’s when Millennials were going through their first relationships and understanding the messiness that could come with it. (I went on a date to see this movie when it first came out. Gonna be honest: not a great date movie!)

(And if anyone is wondering what Jada would’ve thought, I’m just glad he enjoyed his vacation. Last night, while recording a new episode, Kiss was shitting on Eternal Sunshine without even having seen it. And it only came up because Sheek couldn’t let it go, which makes me think he really did like it.)

And speaking of next week, we sat down to review The Night Comes for Us, the Indonesian film that has been billed as the most violent movie ever. Here’s a quick clip of Styles P. and Johan C. demonstrating the fighting style used in the movie, later adopted by John Wick and others.

Last Friday night, Styles, Johan, Eric and I went to a party. A magician was there — and it’s a real shame that Sheek couldn’t make it because he loves that shit. But you could tell that the magician didn’t have the power to read minds or bend time because he made two very big mistakes… And those were dealing with Styles and me.

1. He first had Styles pick a card and then asked me to think of a number between 1 and 30. I chose 29. He just looked at me blankly and was like, “Are you sure?” I didn’t know I’d have to then - on his instruction - flip 29 cards to make the card appear. It was the longest, most anti-climactic trick ever. He got it right but woof, it took forever.

2. Throughout this ten minutes of me flipping cards, Styles — who was in VERY RARE FORM that night — was barking at this dude to “stop doing this magic shit and go get you some box.”

All in all, a great 2J3BD work retreat. I think we all learned a lot and grew closer because of it.

Last night our showcast waas down to 2J2BD (with Kiss on vacation) — and the dynamic felt like a throwback to when we first started the show a million years ago. It was my film pick this week and we did Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Very high scores on Rotten Tomatoes! But how will the Jim Carrey/Kate Winslet Millennial cult classic stand up to our show? Some notes:

• Jadakiss would’ve hated it, for the record, so it’s fine that he missed this one.

• Kanye famously loved it, and had the director and guy who did the score contribute to his celebrated sophomore album Late Registration.

• And it was important to me, Eric and especially Johan, who says it’s a Top 3 movie for him.

We got SO MANY suggestions this week. I had to edit down a couple of the longer messages on the right, just so it all fit in one screenshot. I might do 8 Mile for my next pick, it’s always something I think about after I’ve already made my pick. Requiem, I saw once in college, I wonder what I’d think now. Tenenbaums would be so good. Q lot of people have been asking for American Me and Blood In Blood Out, neither of which I’ve seen but have to, I know. And I am continuously surprised Styles doesn’t just pick True Romance — but maybe next time. I loved Drive My Car when I saw it in theatres a few years ago, I thought it was so good. The LOX wouldn’t have the patience for it, but I loved it.

Last Thursday, we did our much-ballyhooed Mean Girls live show for our fifth straight sold-out crowd! Thank you all for coming through for us, time and time again. Whether you came up from Florida, Arkansas, Delaware or down from The Bronx, we really appreciate you making the journey to the far west side of Manhattan.

Eric just finished editing the audio, Johan is at work doing the video and Sheek is texting me at 8am. So, everyone is up and excited for you to watch the final product this Monday morning. Subscribe to our YouTube so you don’t miss it!

I won’t give away anyone’s Mean Girls takes, but what I can say (because there are clips out there, and because I hinted at it in last week’s newsletter) is that Is Jadakiss Italian? went over really well, and singing the Cheers theme with The LOX and Eric (and Mayo on the keys) was a very clear highlight. Styles came in too early on his line which had Kiss, Sheek and Eric dying. (I was too busy getting the song back on the rails, I had no time to die.)

I’m having a conversation today with Josh, our booker, about where we can go next! I personally feel like Philly is a good place to start.

Then again, a few years ago, Eric and I went on a speaking tour of colleges. So we emailed all of these schools from around the country, up around Boston, Chicago, DC, San Diego, LA, you know, anywhere with good programs for journalism, podcasting, multimedia studies or whatever. At a certain point, though, it became less about “what’s the best program?” and more “where is there a cool destination?” And so we worked very hard to speak in Valencia, Spain, where they have schools I think.

To that point, I think our next touring dates should be in Philadelphia and Croatia.

There’s a world we all live in, the one with rules and time, where convention puts shoes on your feet instead of your hands. Now, obviously we’ve all witnessed things that challenge that reality, like, for instance, octopi — they’re like aliens that swim and/or taste delicious! Or like, the technology that allow Glade Plug-Ins to exist or for airplanes to fly. All incredible things that, to someone in the 1800s, would be extremely wild to think about.

And in that same spirit, we in this newsletter got The LOX — the personification of the streets — to watch Mean Girls, the 2004 film where Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey show how popularity is a myth and adulthood is still the high school lunch table even after you graduate. (I should say, this newsletter also got me and Eric to watch and discuss the movie, which feels a little less impressive since I was the one to suggest it. Still significant, though.)

I thought I was ready for Sheek’s and Kiss’ reactions to the movie. Well, dear reader: I I wasn’t. And I wasn’t ready for Styles’ reaction to their reactions. Incredible episode. A lot of texts and in-person conversations have used the words “best one yet.” Also, our booker’s first words to me upon getting off the stage? “Let’s take this on the road!” Let us know what city you’re in, in the comments!

People don’t like it when I give too much away, so here’s a quick out of context screenshot from the group chat this morning:

And, here’s something that didn’t make it into the taping: we brought Sheek and Styles back to play “Who Wants to Be a Skrillionaire?” our in-show game show.

I write the questions, so I was trying to think of some that no one’s asked before. And the thought popped into my head: “If Too $hort’s favorite word is ‘bitch’, is it really the word he’s used most in his songs?”

A couple of things to note:

• I no longer use my AI bot Douglas, because they wanted me to pay $10/month to keep it alive, and

• AI wouldn’t be helpful in this case, because there are (thankfully) copyright protections.

• But doing it manually took two days and I didn’t even finish going through all of Too $hort’s catalog.

I only got through his first 11 albums before Eric said he didn’t think this would make for a good question, but the answer is, yes, his most used word — more than any other filler word (the, and, just, etc.), more than any adjective, noun, verb, anything — is “bitch.”

Another thing I learned in going through all these songs, over two days? He and his friend Freddy B say they invented the word “bee-yotch” in 1981, at Freemont High School.

And I know you want to see the full episode, but we won’t have it all edited by Monday, so we’ll be taking a week off.

• Sheek and I both liked Obsession. I don’t think anyone else saw it.

And the thing about this newsletter is, a lot of people won’t be able to make it. I totally get it! It’s too far, too expensive, you need a babysitter, you’re not allowed in New York City, you’re not allowed around Jeff — we all have reasons. (Not me, I’ll be there.) And to get you in the mood for it, today I’ll be pitting the two cultural juggernauts that made bubblegum pink pop in the early 2000s against one another:

Cameron “Killa Cam” Giles of Harlem and the Mean Girls of North Shore High School hailing from Evanston, Illinois. (Go Lions.)

WHO WEARS PINK ON WEDNESDAYS?

Lindsay Lohan’s a fish out of water in Mean Girls, a freckled and bookish immigrant from Kenya. She’s taken in by Damien and Janis, who aren’t just outcasts: classmates greet them with open hostility. Regina George and her band of popular girls approach Lohan to save her from what they see as social quicksand. But in order to join the cool clique, The Plastics, Lindsay must adapt to their ways. First rule? Wear pink on Wednesdays. The soft color only amplifies their power.

Now, obviously, no one has made pastels look harder than Cam’ron did on February 13, 2003, hopping out his Range for Baby Phat’s New York Fashion Week runway show. Dripped out in $5,000 in pink fur matched to his Motorola, an iconic moment was born — one that led to a personalized Pantone color, memes and shower curtains for sale (briefly).

So, it’s a real Cady’s choice, here. What tips it? The Baby Phat show was on a Thursday.

VERDICT: Mean Girls.

WHO GETS MEANER?

Regina said some snippy things. Cute stuff. Kid shit. But when the actor Omar Gooding started throwing shots at Cam over a perceived slight two years ago, Cam’ron flew Gooding out to audition for a fake film and then aired the footage, humiliating him in the process. No one out-pizzas The Hut and no one out-petties Killa. If there are lines not to be crossed, Cam has jumped over them and built hotels on the other side.

VERDICT: Cam’ron.

WHO GOES DUMBER?

Some didn’t get Cam’s ABC sing-song flow — I always loved it. But Cam always gave too-smart-for-school, and the past 10 years have really shown how savvy he can be beyond rapping as he’s expanded into different spheres. Movies, podcasts, dick pills, he’s doing it all and doing it successfully and independently. As he said during one of his Mase beefs in 2017 or so (I’m too lazy to look it up), “I'll use my brain so I will leave you brainless.”

And then there’s Karen, a double-D dolt who says things like, “It's like I have ESPN or something. My breasts can always tell when it's going to rain.”

VERDICT: Mean Girls.

WHO IS BETTER AT MATH?

In order to impress Aaron, Lindsay Lohan fakes being bad at math and quits the Mathletes. (She eventually learns she can be her genuine self and comes back to the team.) Cam, on the other hand, is so good at breaking down D-Boy math that, more than 25 years out of the game, he’s still rattling off ounces, kilos, prices and could probably tell you who got to Ohio first if his train left NYC’s Penn Station going 50mph and his connect’s left Detroit going 20mph.

VERDICT: Cam’ron.

END RESULT: 2-2.

Damn. No one likes a tie. But life is cruel…dare I say Mean. And I Mean it when I say you should get your tickets to 2J3BD LIVE on August 13th! These are some things you could be watching this week on Netflix:

American Gangster: Probably not the absolute best Denzel performance (which would be Malcolm X) but this is my favorite. From placing the tip jar next to Idris Elba and his repeated go-to “My man” when he’s annoyed, to him taking in Ruby Dee’s hurt at ruining the family, he’s just so good in this. I also love Russell Crowe, the music within the movie and the JAŸ-Z soundtrack, the look of everything — shit, Common and T.I. being cast as his country cousins. It’s aged so well, and the ending is really perfect. Crazy…like, really crazy that it’s based off a true story. American Gangster leaves Netflix on July 31.

Ex Machina: One of the sickest endings ever. A tech company CEO invites one of their engineers to his compound, somewhere super remote, to test his AI system. An NDA is signed, there are pats on the back and the grand experiment begins. There’s a moment a third of the way through where all the power cuts out, the monitoring cameras turn off, the room turns red as the system reboots. Everything is still. But then the robot stands up and walks over to Caleb. She says his name. The engineer looks back. “You’re wrong,” she says. Caleb doesn’t know what to say. The moment hangs in the air like an anvil. She continues, “You shouldn’t trust [the CEO]. He’s not your friend.” The power starts up again. Ex Machina leaves Netflix on July 31.

Hardball (free on Pluto) has Keanu Reeves coaching a rag-tag group of inner-city kids. It’s like Bad News Bears or Mighty Ducks or Wildcats or any number of movies that we all know and love.

Mean Girls (free on Pluto) stars Lindsay Lohan, Amy Poehler and Rachel McAdams. It’s about mean girls, but also it’s about survival.

Player’s Club (rent on Amazon) is a comedy/drama written and directed by Ice Cube, and stars Bernie Mac and Jamie Foxx. Pimps and hoes. Excuse me as I listen to “Splackavellie.”

True Romance (stream on Netflix) is written by a very young Quentin Tarantino and stars Christian Slater and Roseanne Arquette, with Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, James Gandolfini and a whole slew of others after Slater and Arquette find themselves with a suitcase filled with drugs.

You have until Wednesday July 22 to vote, I’m announcing it on July 23. Don’t vote wrong! Buy your tickets and come through!

People are saying that our Carlito’s Way episode is one of our best — there’s a lot within the actual episode, but the question I want to ask here and now is, is it a better movie than Scarface?

We recorded two new episodes on Wednesday — Carlito’s Way and 48 Hrs. — so we are back to business, baby!!! It is crazy that we hadn’t sat down and hung out since the Knicks won, a month ago. Things came up, people were out of town, life happens. Honestly, now that I think about it, Styles never knows his schedule, so let’s just be glad that we get any episodes at all.

Next week, we’ll be doing a poll where you — yes, you! — will select what movie we’ll be discussing at our live show! Make sure to open the newsletter next Thursday and participate!

In case you were wondering, Styles thought he would be joining us at Yankee Stadium tonight, but Eric and I reminded him that he’d literally just posted about plans he has on Instagram, three states away.

That’s sorta it for this week. Well, one last thing: for a long time, I made it so that you could suggest movies here — we’ve gotten over 600 submissions so far, things were going swimmingly. But at the end of June, I made a change, saying that whatever movies you suggest should be streaming — you know, so maybe it’d be helpful for others who want to watch. And immediately just about everyone pretty much stopped writing in. So, I’m here to apologize and make amends and go back to the way we were doing things before: I took away the requirement, I made it easier to write but harder to watch — ultimately, the trade-off is that you’re heard which is a good thing.

Hold onto your horses and buckle your Lugz: 2J3BD is back and live-r than ever! On Thursday August 13, the five men (and Johan) of 2J3BD won’t just be touching the stage at Manhattan’s City Winery — we’ll be torching it.

At our previous sold-out shows, The LOX and ItsTheReal have reviewed There’s Something About Mary, House Party, Die Hard and The Breakfast Club — and done live renditions of Styles P’s Karate Man, What’s Sheek Mad About? and Is Jadakiss Italian? In April, we also did an AKA battle (people say I won!) and an R&B playlist battle (people say I didn’t win that one, but people can always be wrong).
