Before GPS, satellite messengers, and adventure-bike luggage systems, a 23-year-old American architecture graduate told a London dinner party he was going home the long way: around the world, on a motorcycle. One guest happened to own Douglas Motorcycles. A few weeks later, Robert Edison Fulton Jr. rolled out of England on a specially prepared Bristol flat-twin with extra fuel, car tires, a movie camera, and a revolver hidden under a skid plate.

This is not the steamboat inventor. This is the other Robert Fulton - named after both that inventor and Thomas Edison - and one of the most important adventure-riding stories most modern dual-sport riders have never fully heard.

The boast became an 18-month, roughly 40,000-mile solo ride from London through Europe, the Middle East, India, Afghanistan, Southeast Asia, China, and Japan, then across the United States. That dinner-party dare, and the factory-built Douglas that carried it out, is the story below.

The Boast That Became a Route

Fulton had just finished architectural studies in Vienna after Harvard. Home was New York. The polite question at dinner was when he would sail. His answer, which he later admitted startled even him, was that he would ride around the world instead.

A Douglas executive at the table - accounts name Kenton Redgrave after the firm’s 1931–32 ownership shakeup - took him at his word. Within weeks Fulton was at the Kingswood, Bristol works collecting a rare 750cc H32 Mastiff, a sidevalve flat twin built as a heavyweight tourer and sidecar tug. Period figures put it around 744cc (76 x 82 mm), with modest power by modern standards and a claimed top speed in the 70s when unladen. Loaded for a world tour, it was never about speed. It was about going the distance.

The factory added the kit a 1932 overland rider actually needed:

• Main tank plus a four-gallon auxiliary tank (about seven gallons total)

• Common automobile tires so replacements could be found almost anywhere

• Windshield with a map pocket

• Tool boxes on both sides

• A steel case for spare parts and thousands of feet of 35mm motion-picture film

• Front rack for camera, extra shirt, toothbrush, and a canvas bag with a blanket

• Steel skid plate that doubled as a gun cache

• British and American flags

• English plate GY 1616

That labeled publicity photo is still the most famous image of the trip: a young rider in a fur-collared coat and sun helmet, looking more like a film extra than a man about to cross deserts that maps still marked “unsurveyed.”

He left in mid-1932. Eighteen months later he reached Japan, shipped to San Francisco, and rode east to New York, arriving Christmas Eve 1933.

Why It Was a Douglas

Douglas was not a random gift. By 1932 the Bristol name already had a reputation for horizontally opposed twins that ran smoother and lower than most British singles.

The company started as a foundry. Brothers William and Edwin Douglas opened an engineering shop in Bristol in 1882, then supplied castings to Joseph Barter’s Light Motors “Fairy” flat-twin. When Light Motors folded in 1907, Douglas took over the design and put its own motorcycle on the market that same year. The layout stuck: a boxer-style twin mounted in line with the frame, a formula the firm kept, in one form or another, until the end.

That engine earned the brand more than showroom praise. Douglas twins served as World War I dispatch mounts by the tens of thousands. They won Isle of Man TT classes, including the 1912 Junior, and later sidecar TTs. In the late 1920s the same low, even-firing twins became dirt-track and speedway weapons in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. Riders called them Duggies. Mechanics liked that the opposed cylinders stayed cooler and the bike stayed planted.

Then the Depression hit. The family firm went public, changed hands, and in 1932 launched a dog-named range to look fresh: Terrier, Bulldog, Greyhound, Airedale—and the 750cc touring H32 Mastiff Fulton received. It was a rare, short-lived model. Factory finances were so tight that 1933 Mastiff production virtually stopped, with leftover bikes sold as H33s. Giving a well-connected young American a fully kitted world-tour machine was marketing as much as generosity. Wikipedia still notes that Fulton’s ride “gained significant attention” for Douglas at a moment the company badly needed it.

Douglas staggered on. William Douglas bought back into the business. The 1934 Endeavour tried shaft drive and a transverse twin. After the war the firm shrank to 350cc flat twins, then made a last stand with the 1955–57 Dragonfly before Westinghouse took over and motorcycle production ended in 1957. The company later imported Vespas. The Fulton Mastiff remains one of the most famous single Douglas motorcycles ever built—not because thousands were sold, but because one of them went around the world.

What “Around the World” Looked Like in 1932

Fulton rode east through France, Germany, Austria, the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey, then into Syria and Iraq. A ship took him to India. He pushed into Afghanistan and what is now Pakistan, including the Khyber Pass, then on through Southeast Asia, China, and Japan. Country counts vary by source—22 to 32—because borders and stopovers were messier then. Mileage estimates run from about 25,000 miles for London-to-Tokyo to roughly 40,000 miles including the United States.

The bike started with a sidecar and far too much kit: books, cooking gear, extra shoes, even a tuxedo “in case of an embassy dinner.” Reality edited the packing list. The sidecar and tuxedo went. The cameras stayed.

He filmed with a Bell & Howell 35mm camera and shot stills with a Leica. The footage later became lecture material, then family-produced films including Twice Upon a Caravan. The written account, One Man Caravan (1937), is still the book adventure riders recommend when they want the pre-GS origin story.

It was not a sanitized travelogue. He spent a night in a Turkish jail, was hospitalized with jaundice in Baghdad, dumped the bike into a culvert in the dark, ran out of gas once, and recorded about six flats. In Waziristan a transmission kingpin sheared; the factory spare-parts bag had the piece. He was shot at near the Khyber Pass and steered around bandits in Iraq. The pistol, he later said, was most useful as a hammer.

People also helped him. Rajahs hosted him. Villagers gathered around the Douglas as if it were a spaceship. In an era with almost no tourist infrastructure, hospitality was the real navigation app.

Why This Ride Still Matters

Modern adventure riding is GPS tracks, crash bars, tubeless tires, and a phone full of embassy numbers. Fulton’s ride is the opposite case study: a dinner-party dare, a factory-modified British twin from a company fighting to stay alive, paper maps, nitrate film, and the willingness to throw away the tuxedo when the road got real.

A few takeaways that still hold:

• Range beats romance. The extra tank and car-sized tires were smarter than the formal wear.

• The right engine layout helps. Douglas built its name on a smooth, low flat-twin—the same idea BMW later made famous.

• Film the ride. His movie camera turned a stunt into a career. A Harvard Club screening led to work documenting Pan American Clipper routes.

• Travel light after the first thousand miles. Every long-distance rider still learns this the hard way.

• The machine is only half the story. One Man Caravan endures because Fulton wrote about people, not just punctures.

After the trip he kept inventing—flight and gunnery trainers, the Airphibian flying car, the Skyhook aerial retrieval system—and collected around 70 patents. By then the Douglas had been restored and kept in the family. The boast had become a life.

Fulton had two marriages and three children; he died at his home in Newtown, Connecticut on May 7, 2004, at the ripe age of 95.

If you ride adventure or vintage iron, put One Man Caravan on the nightstand. Look up Twice Upon a Caravan for Fulton’s later narration over the original footage. Then look at that 1932 labeled photo again: sun helmet, map-pocket windshield, four-gallon tank, film case, skid plate—bolted to a Bristol twin from a factory that would be gone in 25 years.

No heated grips. No crash sensors. No “share my live location.”

Just a young rider, a Douglas Mastiff, and a sentence he could not take back.

That is still the purest version of why we throw a leg over a motorcycle.

As of mid-week (through Monday, August 10), the South Dakota Department of Transportation counted 223,708 vehicles entering Sturgis at nine key points — a figure running just 2.9% below the five-year average.

That’s the official tally so far in a non-milestone year (last year’s 85th anniversary drew a strong 537,459 vehicles total). Yet locals and longtime vendors are saying the streets, campgrounds, and scenic loops feel busier than expected — a fuller, louder presence than many anticipated after the anniversary surge. Typical full-rally attendance hovers around the half-million mark in vehicles and visitors; early vibes suggest this one could still push hard toward that range or beyond as the second half unfolds.

The fun side has been pure Sturgis. Main Street remains a nonstop parade of custom baggers, choppers, and trikes. Riders are hitting the classics — Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Spearfish Canyon — while campgrounds host the usual mix of burnouts, bike shows, and late-night stories. Concert stages have delivered nightly energy, and the overall atmosphere stays true to the “freedom, friendship, and open road” spirit that has defined the rally since 1938.

High-profile shows have already lit up the Buffalo Chip. David Lee Roth kicked things off with pure Van Halen-era swagger on opening night (August 7). Megadeth brought the thrash metal thunder on Saturday (August 8). Skillet and P.O.D. kept the intensity high on Monday, while Lynyrd Skynyrd delivered Southern rock classics on Tuesday (August 11). Tonight (Wednesday, August 12) brings a powerhouse double-header: Halestorm’s hard-rock edge followed by country star Lainey Wilson. Celebrity sightings have been solid too. Harley-Davidson CEO Artie Starrs made his first-ever Sturgis visit this week alongside Museum Vice President Bill Davidson (great-grandson of one of the founders). They were welcomed at the city’s press conference and helped highlight Military and First Responders Appreciation Day. Starrs shared his enthusiasm publicly, saying: “I’m pinching myself… What a blessing to be here. I have long admired the unique position Harley-Davidson has in the hearts of its riders and fans.” He added, “There is no brand that brings the same level of community and rebellious spirit as us,” and noted the company’s deep military ties: “For over a century, the military is in our DNA. When individuals leave the military, they like to get on a bike. We’re honored to have so many veterans who ride.” Other familiar faces around town have included NASCAR icons like the Wallace brothers, American Chopper’s Teutul family, motocross legend Cary Hart, and Jackyl’s Jesse James Dupree, with South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden also on the scene.

One of the biggest highlights came Sunday night, August 9, at the Legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip. British rocker Yungblud closed out the U.S. leg of his IDOLS World Tour with a high-octane set that perfectly matched the rally’s chaotic, communal vibe. The performance was energetic and interactive — running, jumping, connecting with the crowd in a way that turned the amphitheater into one big, shared moment under the South Dakota stars.

True to form, Yungblud didn’t just show up. He posted “HAD TO RIDE IN FOR STURGIS” and arrived on two wheels, cruising into the Chip on a full-dressed Harley-Davidson. The touring bagger (classic saddlebags, fairing, and that unmistakable long-haul stance) turned heads as the rocker made his entrance, blending rock-star swagger with genuine rider respect. Fans and onlookers called it a beautiful Harley moment that fit right into the Sturgis landscape.

Of course, the open road cuts both ways. South Dakota Highway Patrol figures through early this week show three fatal crashes and three fatalities during the official rally period, along with 21 injury crashes. That injury number is actually down from 35 at the same point last year, while citations and warnings are running higher. Recent incidents include single-vehicle losses of control and a deer strike, with most injuries non-life-threatening. Law enforcement continues emphasizing helmets, sober riding, and extra caution on the winding Black Hills routes that draw so many here.

Balanced coverage means acknowledging both the pure joy and the real risks. Thousands of riders are making memories, sharing the road with friends old and new, and keeping the Sturgis tradition alive. At the same time, every fatality is a reminder that these roads demand respect.

With the second half still ahead — more concerts, more miles, more of that unique Sturgis energy — the 86th Rally is shaping up as another unforgettable chapter. Whether the final vehicle count lands near the usual 500,000 or pushes higher as locals suspect, one thing is clear: the Black Hills are alive with the sound of engines.

Today, I am honored that Jon Meleshenko of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders has agreed to share his firsthand perspective - and imagery - from the PGR mission escorting 19-year-old Private First-Class Isabella Gonzales to her final resting place.

Isabella was a native of Carrollton, Texas and 2025 graduate of Hebron High School who answered the call to serve her country with quiet determination. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 2025 at age 17 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command in Ansbach, Germany, where she served as a 14P Air and Missile Defense Crewmember. Supporting Operation Inherent Resolve at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, she was killed in action on July 17, 2026, during an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack. She is survived by her mother, sister, fiancé, and extended family.

Today TEXAS welcomed home one of her heroes

Every PGR mission is filled with honor, pride, grief, gratitude, and emotional exhaustion. Today, all of those emotions seemed magnified.

I had the privilege of serving as one of only twelve Patriot Guard Riders selected to ride as a flag bike during the dignified transfer of U.S. Army Private First Class Isabella Gonzales as she returned home to Texas.

As Isabella’s aircraft taxied onto the tarmac at DFW Airport beneath a water cannon salute, the reality of the moment was overwhelming. It was heartbreaking, humbling, and an honor beyond words.

Just honored..I don’t use the word honor lightly.

The Dallas Police Department provided an extraordinary escort with approximately 24 motorcycle officers and more than 20 patrol units. Motorcycle officers and honor bikes from neighboring agencies, including Farmers Branch, Carrollton, and Corinth, joined the procession. Six East Texas Patriot Guard Riders traveled from Longview to ride alongside six of us from North Texas. Together, we shared one mission—to ensure Isabella was brought home with the honor, dignity, and respect she so richly deserved.

As our procession traveled across the Dallas Metroplex, Dallas PD blocked every intersection and stretch of highway along our route. Traffic came to a complete stop. I watched drivers step from their vehicles. Some placed their hands over their hearts. Others stood at attention and rendered a salute as Isabella passed.

Those are moments I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Despite the relentless Texas heat, every mile was worth it. Motorcycle kickstands sank into the softened asphalt, uniforms were soaked with sweat, and not one person complained. Everyone understood why we were there.

The emotions throughout the day are difficult to describe—pride, heartbreak, gratitude, determination, and at times, tears.

The weight you carry while riding in a procession like this is immense. You’re constantly praying that nothing goes wrong, that every rider remains safe, and that the family sees the overwhelming love, honor, and respect surrounding them. You hope your presence eases—even if only by the smallest amount—the unimaginable pain they are carrying.

I couldn’t be prouder of my Patriot Guard Riders brothers and sisters from east, central and north Texas! They quietly volunteer to stand in the gap for complete strangers during some of the darkest days of their lives.

My heartfelt prayer is that Isabella’s family felt the incredible outpouring of love and support surrounding them today. While nothing can erase their loss, I hope they know they do not walk this journey alone.

Tomorrow morning, we will once again escort Isabella—this time to her final resting place at DFW National Cemetery.

“It Is Finished.”

Today marked the final Patriot Guard Riders mission honoring U.S. Army Private First Class Isabella Gonzales.

Over the past two days, I had the humbling privilege of serving alongside my North Texas Patriot Guard Riders family, the Dallas Police Department, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, the American Legion, and patriotic Texans as we stood beside Isabella and her family.

Yesterday, we escorted Isabella and her family from DFW Airport to the funeral home. We then escorted her family to Prestonwood Baptist Church for her memorial service, while Isabella remained at the funeral home under the watch of U.S. Army soldiers.

Today was Isabella’s final journey.

We escorted Isabella and her family from Carrollton to Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery under another flawless escort by the Dallas Police Department. More than 24 motor officers and 20 patrol vehicles secured every intersection, allowing the procession to move without interruption. By God’s grace, every rider arrived safely.

People often say, “Mission accomplished.” I struggle with those words today.

There is nothing successful about bringing a 19-year-old American soldier to her final resting place.

If there was any success, it was keeping our promise—to bring Isabella home with the honor, dignity, and respect she earned while surrounding her family with unwavering support.

As we entered the cemetery, the silence was overwhelming. Our 12 flag motorcycles paused before being escorted to Shelter A, where Patriot Guard Riders, veterans, military members, and supporters waited to receive Isabella one final time.

Throughout the procession, I rode 5 motorcycles behind the hearse today and yesterday. Whenever the road curved, I could see Isabella’s flag-draped casket through the windows.

Every glimpse broke me. I sobbed repeatedly, at times uncontrollably.

The committal service was beautiful. A member of Isabella’s family spoke about her faith and returned several times to John 14, where Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” In the middle of unimaginable grief, those words brought hope.

Then came Taps.

The rifle salute.

The folding of our nation’s flag.

Each moment carried a weight beyond words.

But what will stay with me most was hearing a mother’s cries.

As a father, I know the love we have for our children. Hearing a mother grieve the loss of hers reaches a place in your soul that never leaves.

Part of me wishes I could forget it. Another part hopes I never do. Remembering reminds me why we ride.

It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to escort Private First Class Isabella Gonzales and stand beside her incredible family. I pray they find comfort in knowing Texas showed up for their daughter and that her sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Godspeed, Soldier.

Rest easy, Isabella.

We have the watch.

A Texas Custom Motorcycle Legacy

Jeff Nicklus, founder, CEO, and chief designer of Desperado Motorcycles, earned recognition as a Motorcycle Master Builder. Industry profiles describe him as one of only a small number of builders to receive that distinction. He began building motorcycles at age 15 in Dallas and went on to create limited-production, one-of-a-kind American V-Twin machines known for sleek design, careful engineering, and strong performance.

Desperado produced a range of signature and limited-edition models—including the Pale Rider series, Assassin II, Gun Runner II, Smuggler II, Posse II, and custom bobbers—each hand-built and tailored to the owner. Production was intentionally limited to prioritize quality. Every motorcycle carried a 17-digit VIN, was titled as a Desperado, and appeared in valuation guides such as Kelley Blue Book and the N.A.D.A. Guide. Nicklus was known for personally test-riding each bike before delivery—if it did not meet his standards, it did not leave the shop. He also built numerous one-off customs for charity, including projects supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Personal Note: I’ve known Jeff Nicklus for about 22 years, and he has always been exceptionally kind to me. A while back, when my dad was in town visiting, I took him over to Strokers Dallas to meet Rick Fairless. After that meeting, Jeff shared with me that Rick had called him to say my dad was a proper “long hair,” just like Jeff and Rick — Jeff got such a laugh out of that!

One notable creation was the NRA 2nd Amendment Bike, a one-off Softail featuring elaborate House of Kolor paint with gold and silver leaf graphics and signatures from figures including Ted Nugent, Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams Jr., Tom Selleck, and various political leaders.

Regarding Nicklus’s background, several published sources have described his military service:

• In a November 19, 2010 American Rider magazine article by Robert Filla: “Jeff Nicklus is the founder, CEO and head engineer for Desperado Motorcycles. As a former F-4 Phantom driver (pilot), he was ingrained with a philosophy embracing fluid lines and aerodynamic design.”

• A long-standing Claytowne.com builder profile states: “Jeff was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force with over a hundred combat missions flown during the Vietnam War.”

This motorcycle pays direct homage to the resourceful post-World War II riders who stripped their bikes for performance and freedom. In a quiet move that surprised many in the motorcycle community, Cycle World has effectively ceased operations. The shutdown, which took place around July 7, 2026, brings an end to one of the longest-running and most influential motorcycle publications in American history.

A Legacy That Defined Motorcycle Journalism

Founded in 1962 by Joe Parkhurst, Cycle World set a new standard for motorcycle media. Parkhurst believed riders deserved honest, objective reporting instead of the manufacturer-friendly content common at the time. The magazine quickly earned a reputation for thorough road tests, technical insight, and influential features like its annual “Ten Best” motorcycles awards.

For more than six decades, Cycle World wasn’t just another magazine on the newsstand — it was a trusted voice that helped shape how riders and the industry thought about new bikes, technology, and the culture surrounding motorcycling.

The 2020 Transition: End of Print

The first major blow came in 2020. In September of that year, parent company Bonnier Corp. sold the digital assets of Cycle World and several sister titles to Octane, a powersports-focused fintech company specializing in lending for motorcycles, ATVs, and side-by-sides. The October 2020 issue became the final print edition.

From that point forward, Cycle World operated primarily as a digital publication. Many longtime readers mourned the loss of the physical magazine, but the brand continued delivering news, reviews, and features online.

Under Octane: A Different Era

Under Octane’s ownership, Cycle World’s role appeared to evolve. According to reporting, the publication served not only as a content platform but also as a valuable networking asset for Octane’s core financing business. The recognizable brand helped the company build relationships with manufacturers and dealers in the powersports space.

After roughly five and a half years, Octane made the decision to shut down the remaining operations around July 7, 2026. Staff were reportedly let go, and active editorial work came to an end. No official press release was issued. While the website (cycleworld.com) still displays existing archives as of this writing, no new staff-driven content is expected going forward.

There was no final commemorative issue or public farewell.

What This Means for Riders and the Industry

Cycle World’s disappearance leaves a noticeable void. For generations of riders, it was a go-to source for in-depth, credible information. While independent creators, YouTube channels, forums, and other digital outlets have filled much of the gap, few carry the same institutional history and authority.

In recent weeks, conversations among industry insiders, dealer lots, online forums, and social media groups have turned to Indian Motorcycle’s marketing strategy — one that repeatedly places Harley-Davidson and its CEO Artie Starrs front and center. Initially, it reminded me of a pip-squeak bully at elementary school throwing rocks on the playground for attention — and to many observers, it increasingly reads as calculated rather than confident.

Meanwhile, Harley-Davidson’s community has largely taken the high road, sharing stories that highlight a refreshing sense of positivity under the new leadership.

Leadership Momentum Under Artie Starrs

Since stepping in as President and CEO on October 1, 2025 — a mere 258 days ago as of this article being published — Artie Starrs has moved with impressive speed. He has restored the classic Bar & Shield logo, advanced the “Back to the Bricks” focus on core products and profitability, and prioritized direct dealer engagement. Dealers report better communication, genuine listening sessions, and alignment around long-term success.

One story shared with me provides an example to the type of man Starrs is: A Harley dealer, wearing his H-D shirt and dealing with leg pain at the airport en route to Milwaukee, struck up a conversation with another man in Harley gear. That man was Artie Starrs. Quietly noticing the dealer’s discomfort, Starrs swapped his own first-class seat to give the dealer more legroom and less walking. Small, thoughtful gestures like this — combined with dealership visits where he truly listens to everyone — are earning Starrs real respect on the ground.

And although Starrs lacked a traditional motorcycle industry background, Marquette University Associate Professor of Management Margaret Hughes-Morgan believed it wouldn’t be an issue. Hughes-Morgan pointed to Starrs’ proven success at Topgolf - where he was previously CEO after being at the helm of Pizza Hut - as clear evidence that he knows how to connect with modern consumers and drive growth by saying, “I think this was a wise choice for Harley-Davidson; he knows how to get people’s discretionary dollars for sports activities.”

Marketing Tactics: Self-Reliance vs. Rival Spotlight

Harley-Davidson’s communications typically highlight its own heritage, rider experiences, product strengths, and strategic direction. Indian, by contrast, frequently weaves Harley-Davidson into titles and opening sentences (e.g., dominating “in Harley-Davidson’s backyard”). While this may deliver short-term SEO lift and rivalry drama, it shifts attention away from Indian’s independent merits and strikes many industry players as unprofessional gamesmanship rather than authentic competition.

Dealer Council Throws Full Support Behind Starrs

George Gatto is Chairman of the Harley-Davidson Dealer Council of the National Powersports Dealer Association and owns Three Rivers Harley-Davidson and the Council recently released this open letter of support for Artie Starrs and upper management within H-D.

In response to the open letter, the Council has received numerous letters of support from several regional H-D dealer associations expressing shared sentiments.

“New leadership under Artie Starrs truly is listening and working with dealers and we are already seeing results,” said Gatto. “Moving RevMac back to the U.S., bringing back the 883 Sportster, and introduction of new models. It feels good to be an H-D dealer again!”

Gatto went on to allude to even further good news on the near horizon - in other words, Starrs and the H-D team do not appear to be applying the brakes to the improvements anytime soon.

The motorcycle industry has largely moved past its toughest headwinds and is now focused on adaptation and growth. Getting a driver’s license and a first car was once a defining rite of passage, but today many young people default to rideshares like Uber and Lyft. Attracting the next generation of riders — who bring different values, priorities, and lifestyle expectations — requires fresh thinking, modern experiences, and smarter marketing.

This challenge is not unique. Over the past 15 years, the wine and cruise industries have faced similar pressures and have worked to broaden their appeal through modernization, new experiences, and updated marketing — driven by necessity for growth and shifting consumer preferences. Like them, the motorcycle industry is engaged in an ongoing adaptation rather than a single defining moment.

In the end, the brands that thrive won’t be the ones throwing rocks at their rivals — they’ll be the ones building a bigger, more exciting, and more profitable future together.

A Hero’s Journey on Two Wheels

Duffy’s story isn’t one of casual weekend cruising. On September 11, 2001—his day off as a New York City firefighter—he suited up, hopped on his 2000 Harley-Davidson Super Glide Sport, and rode straight into lower Manhattan. He arrived at the World Trade Center just as the South Tower collapsed, surviving the debris and spending the day rescuing others. A now-iconic photo by Allan Tannenbaum captured him astride his bike amid the chaos, a moment that reshaped his life forever.

“Riding has meant freedom, independence, and stress relief,” Duffy says. “That’s what wind therapy is.”

That same spirit of service before self-carried him through his time in the U.S. Navy and the FDNY, where he calls firefighting “the best job in the world.” Today, it fuels his nonprofit, 1 Soldier 1 Dog 1 Team, which pairs veterans and first responders with shelter dogs to combat PTSD and isolation. “We’re saving two lives—the dog and the veteran,” he shares. “And showing people they’re not alone.”

Tim Duffy’s nonprofit, 1 Soldier 1 Dog 1 Team (1S1D1T), perfectly embodies the same spirit of service and healing that defines both his life and the motorcycle community he’s about to lead at Sturgis. Drawing directly from his experiences as a U.S. Navy veteran and FDNY firefighter who rode his Harley into the World Trade Center on 9/11, Tim personally interviews every applicant, matches them with the right dog, and works hands-on to build training, trust, and a lifelong bond. The mission is beautifully simple: save two lives at once—the veteran’s and the dog’s—while reminding them, they’re never alone. In other U.S. news, Harley-Davidson has issued a recall affecting approximately 16,994 units of certain 2025-2026 Softail models (FLHC Heritage Classic, FXBB Street Bob, FXLRS Low Rider S, and FXLRST Low Rider ST) due to potential rear brake line chafing against the Body Control Module. NHTSA Campaign Number 26V234000 was filed in mid-April, with dealer notifications sent on April 16 and owner letters expected between May 18 and May 25.

• $3.0 billion in North American retail loan originations.

Translation? When Harley riders buy bikes, HDFS is financing the overwhelming majority of them — and doing it profitably. That’s not luck. That’s decades of knowing exactly who we are as customers.

• They hold roughly one-third on their own balance sheet.

The original Homecoming launched strong in 2023 as a major 120th-anniversary celebration with big-name talent. When the high cost of producing a large-scale lakeside event no longer delivered the rider traffic and sales impact Harley needed, a change became inevitable.

Stacking another major Milwaukee gathering right before the one rally we all try to make created tough calendar conflicts. Add in the unpredictability of Midwest summers, and it became clear that the annual festival format wasn’t sustainable long-term.

New Leadership Bringing Fresh Perspective

Since late 2025, Harley-Davidson has been under new leadership focused on running a tighter, more efficient operation. Artie Starrs brings experience in building repeatable, customer-first experiences, and he’s guiding the brand toward decisions that prioritize real value over spectacle.

This shift away from one massive central event opens the door to more targeted, regional activations. Harley stays connected to Milwaukee through the Summerfest partnership — offering special rider perks, H.O.G. benefits, and that classic lakeside energy — without carrying the full burden and risk of running an independent multi-day festival each year.

I am SO thankful that I did not join the chorus that complained about Artie Starrs joining H-D. Some of the self-proclaimed influencers and YouTubers have only been in this for clickbait reasons. I am all for capitalism; however, not at the expense of attempting to trash someone.

Since the August 2025 announcement, I had a very distinct vibe that Starrs was going to be a breath of fresh air. And, from what I have been hearing by those that are truly in the know, H-D is heading in the right direction.
