For decades, I bought into the standard story. I marvelled at Giza, assuming Egypt was the sole birthplace of monumental stone engineering. But eventually, the math stopped making sense. Why just Egypt? Why the institutional obsession with these specific monuments, and why the heavy-handed secrecy surrounding what lies beneath them? It just didn’t make sense. That realisation changed how I looked at the map. I stopped treating Egypt as an isolated “miracle” and started searching for corresponding structural footprints across the planet. That journey began nearly 30 years ago. What I found took me down a rabbit hole that completely rewired my understanding of history - and became the catalyst for what is now 369 Lumineer.

We’ve all been conditioned to look toward the Nile. For over a century, textbooks, government-sanctioned documentary networks, and “credentialed” academic associations have channelled our curiosity into a singular geographic funnel: the Giza Plateau. We’re told that three colossal structures - the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure - represent the absolute pinnacle, the anomaly, and the functional origin point of monumental stone architecture on Earth. It’s a neatly packaged, heavily guarded story. And I’m not buying it.

What if the primary function of over-publicising Giza as “the only real pyramid complex” is precisely to keep our eyes turned away from what lies beneath the soil of Europe, Asia, and the Americas?

When an architectural anomaly threatens to shatter the approved historical timeline, the playbook deployed by these self-appointed custodians rarely changes. First, ignore it. Second, mock it. Third, when independent researchers begin clearing the brush and exposing dressed stone, they step in with administrative control, declare the area a restricted “protected zone,” and decree that nature, not intelligent design, is responsible.

Nowhere is this playbook more evident than in the Visoko Valley of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Structural Features: Excavations along the base and lower flanks have uncovered massive, multi-ton conglomerate concrete blocks laid in overlapping, terraced layers. Soil samples covering these blocks have apparently been carbon-dated back thousands of years before known European civilisations.

Energetic Anomaly: Independent physicists using ultrasound and electromagnetic sensors have repeatedly detected a continuous 28 kHz frequency beam emanating from the apex of the structure, focused in a concentrated vertical column toward the sky.

I spent close to two decades in the advertising industry, and for a collective ten years, Cadbury was one of my largest masterbrand clients. Long before the era of Mondelēz ownership, I worked directly with Cadbury London and their executive ad agency, managing the very core of their global identity. I walked through their factory operations. I stood on the factory floor and tasted real, molten chocolate fresh off the production line. I know chocolate. I love chocolate. I respect the craft, and I genuinely loved what the brand used to represent - which makes watching its systematic degradation all the more difficult to write about.

If you’ve bought chocolate recently and thought, “Why does this taste like candle wax?” or wondered why it stubbornly refuses to melt even on a warm afternoon, you’re not losing your mind. Across the globe, people have begun asking questions about the genuineness of store-bought chocolate. Videos and posts circulate daily on platforms like TikTok and IG showing well-known chocolate brands sitting intact under heat, refusing to liquefy, bending like rubber, or leaving a film across the palate that feels more like petroleum than pasty cacao.

The truth behind this phenomenon is not a secret glitch on the factory floor; it’s a corporate strategy. Covertly, the global confectionery industry is undergoing the most radical structural shift in its history. Faced with skyrocketing cocoa bean costs, compounding crop disruptions, and severe environmental stresses across West Africa, cartels like Mondelēz and Nestlé, are actively opting out of raw, organically grown cocoa. Real cacao is simply becoming too expensive, too volatile, and too difficult to secure in mass industrial quantities (apparently).

To solve this profit crisis, BlackRock’s FMCG crime syndicates are executing a coordinated two-phase pivot. In the immediate term, they’re systematically diluting the chocolate already on our shelves.

The long-term play is already funded and scheduled. We know this. Lab-grown chocolate cell cultures are now engineered to land on retail shelves, and the financial trail leads directly back to the very corporations whose products dominate your local checkout aisle.

Mondelēz, the parent company of Cadbury, Oreo, Milka, and Toblerone backed a USD 4.5 million round for Celleste Bio, an Israeli startup growing cocoa butter from plant cells in bioreactors. Lindt and Puratos pooled USD 5.6 million into the same startup, Food Brewer. In the same funding round, Barry Callebaut, the company supplying nearly a fifth of the world’s chocolate, partnered with a Swiss university, to explore growing cocoa cells outside the farm entirely. Mars licensed CRISPR gene editing technology to alter the DNA of the cacao plant itself. But of course they did.

Side Note: And while I’m at it, let’s not forget our friends at Lindt. While they haven't started lacing their truffles with illegal narcotics - though that might at least explain the price point - they did recently have to defend themselves in court against class-action lawsuits over lead and cadmium levels in their dark chocolate. Lindt's defence strategy? Their lawyers unironically argued in court that calling their products "expertly crafted with the finest ingredients" was merely "exaggerated advertising, blustering, and boasting upon which no reasonable buyer would rely." You really can’t make this shit up. So it should surprise absolutely no one that Lindt and ingredient giant Puratos pooled millions into Food Brewer. Because why fix your heavy-metal-riddled supply chain when you can just sell people bioreactor sludge and call it "Swiss craftsmanship"?

Nevertheless, I digress.

For Blackrock, Vanguard, State Street and their asset management cartel cronies, a lab is infinitely cheaper, more predictable, and more controllable than a farm - yielding tons of synthetic fat without the mess of global supply chains or agricultural labour. Under the financial direction of these institutions - the dominant shareholders driving profit margins across FMCG mega-brands – you’re no longer eating a product born from equatorial soil and sunshine; you’re eating cellular mass grown in a vat.

While the bioreactors scale up for full commercial deployment, the immediate reality inside your local supermarket is arguably worse. You don’t have to wait for the arrival of vat-grown cells to experience counterfeit chocolate; you’re already eating it.

Cadbury and other mass-market FMCG giants have been quietly modifying their recipes every single year, altering the fundamental chemistry of their products to stretch dwindling cocoa reserves while playing a quiet game of regional regulatory arbitrage.

Scan the wrappers of a Cadbury Dairy Milk bar across three different continents, and the silent manipulation becomes undeniable:

• In the USA (where the brand is licensed to Hershey), cocoa content drops to a meagre 11% cocoa - barely hovering above the US legal floor for candy.

• In the UK, the formula sits at a minimum 20% cocoa solids - a percentage so low that it fails EU milk chocolate standards (which require 25%), forcing regulators to downgrade it.

• In Australia, while the bar lists 27% cocoa solids, the formulation still relies heavily on emulsifiers like polyglycerol polyricinoleate or PGPR (E476) - a synthetic food emulsifier derived from castor oil and glycerol - and industrial processing aids to keep production costs down.

Traditional, authentic chocolate relies on pure cocoa butter - the natural, precious fat extracted from the cacao bean that gives chocolate its signature low melting point near body temperature (~34°C / 93°F) and its iconic silky mouthfeel.

Today, real cocoa butter has been stripped out and replaced with a cheap, industrial blend of six alternative vegetable oils, including palm oil, shea, sal, and mango kernel fat. Because these hard plant oils lack the structural fluid properties of pure cocoa fat, manufacturers dilute the mixture with PGPR / E476, that cheap synthetic emulsifier that thins the batter so it flows through factory moulds. To mask the resulting flat, waxy profile of industrial oil, they blast the formulation with petroleum-derived synthetic vanillin.

This aggressive reformulation creates a severe legal issue that Big Food prefers you don’t investigate. Under international food standard regulations, including strict directives across the EU and dozens of sovereign nations, a product can’t legally be called “chocolate” if non-cocoa vegetable fats exceed a strict 5% threshold. Because these altered formulations bypass that limit, the bars sitting on your store shelves are technically not legal chocolate in at least 27 countries! In those jurisdictions, manufacturers are legally forced to strip the word “chocolate” from the primary label, hiding behind deceptive legal euphemisms like “chocolatey candy,” “choc-coated treat,” or the widely overused “confectionery bar.”

It’s the same playbook deployed by the dairy cartel: when ice cream manufacturers stopped using actual cream and replaced it with synthetic, GMO-derived ingredients and industrial vegetable oils, they were forced to rebrand their tubs as “frozen desserts” or “ice confections.”

And the safety profile of these mass-market formulations is equally troubling.

When consumer scanning tools and diagnostic apps like Reveal It are run over standard chocolate bars, the digital readout flags immediate warnings for heavy processing alongside heavy metal contamination. Lab testing across mass supply chains frequently detects trace residues of lead and cadmium. When mega-corporations blend cheap, low-grade imported cocoa solids with industrial fat matrices, you receive the worst of both worlds: a highly processed synthetic candy bar laced with environmental toxicities.

If you want to consume authentic chocolate made from real, tree-grown cacao rather than industrial oil blends or future tank-cultivated cells, you really need to seek out brands that explicitly commit to pure cocoa butter, ethical sourcing, and high cacao percentages.

Here are several brands holding the line for real chocolate

Tony’s (Netherlands): This one’s my absolute go-to. Tony’s is a Dutch chocolate manufacturer created in 2005 by journalist Teun van de Keuken as a protest against child exploitation and slavery in the chocolate industry. Ranging from 32% cocoa in milk varieties up to 70% in dark chocolate selections, Tony’s relies exclusively on pure cocoa butter, natural cocoa mass, and zero palm oil or synthetic substitute fats.

Alter Eco (Switzerland): Producing organic bars spanning 57% to 100% pure cacao, crafted without industrial emulsifiers, artificial flavourings, or vegetable fat extenders.

Green & Black’s Organic (London, England): Offering rich organic formulations starting at 37% cocoa for milk chocolate up to 85% for dark chocolate, maintaining strict traditional cocoa butter integrity.

Hu Kitchen (New York, USA): Ultra-clean chocolate bars ranging from 60% to 70% cacao, explicitly free from refined sugars, lecithin, palm oil, or synthetic vanillin.

Endangered Species Chocolate (Indiana, USA): Delivering ethically sourced bars featuring 48% cocoa for classic milk chocolate up to 88% cocoa for intense dark chocolate, crafted entirely with non-GMO, real cocoa ingredients.

Oialla Organic Chocolate (Denmark): Ranging from 46% cocoa in milk varieties up to 72%, 78%, and 100% pure dark chocolate, Oialla crafts organic, single-origin bars using wild-harvested Bolivian Beniano cacao beans, pure cocoa butter, and zero synthetic emulsifiers or industrial vegetable fats.

The choice is clear. The sooner we turn our backs on Big Food’s cartel, the quicker their profit margins will nosedive. That total consumer rejection is the only leverage we have to force these crime syndicates back to reality and rescue cacao as the soul of what we have always known as chocolate.

This article is the third and final instalment of The Great American Psyop, a three-part forensic investigation into the historical, macroeconomic, psychological, and cultural forces that engineered modern consumer society.

In Part I, I examined how post-war America systematically transformed the citizen into a consumer through the synchronised deployment of mass advertising, perpetual debt, hyper-convenience, and monetary expansion. In Part II, I explored how that psychological blueprint was covertly exported worldwide as a commercial franchise, before migrating online to form a digitised system built on data harvest, behavioural tracking, and algorithmic perception management.

This final instalment is about the invoice. We’re past the point of asking how the machine was built, or how it managed to scale its frontiers. None of that matters anymore. The only question left is what it’s ultimately produced.

As with the previous two parts, the insights throughout this piece are informed by historical research, cultural analysis, and my own professional observations as an industry insider. I don’t ask for your blind belief. In an age of total psychological enclosure, true independence requires active curiosity and deliberate scepticism. Approach the following with a willingness to question the official narratives, and the conclusions presented here.

By the early 2000s, the structural transformation described throughout this series was largely absolute. The transition was complete. The citizen had been successfully hollowed out into a mindless consumer. The mindless consumer had been digitised into a predictable data point. Consumption had evolved from a basic economic activity into the primary vessel of our cultural identity.

Meanwhile, those technologies originally marketed to us as tools of “absolute liberation” had quietly inverted, hardening into highly sophisticated mechanisms designed to observe, predict, steer, and monetise human behaviour.

The remarkable, deeply hypnotic aspect of this transformation is that it unfolded against a backdrop of unprecedented material abundance. Across much of the developed world, modern populations gained access to physical comforts, domestic conveniences, and advanced technologies that previous generations could scarcely have processed.

Information was instantly democratised and global comms became entirely effortless. The sheer scope of consumer choice expanded exponentially. Medical breakthroughs pushed back mortality rates and mitigated physical suffering. By every traditional, numerical metric utilised by institutional economists, modern societies had become richer, safer, and more technologically sophisticated than any civilisation in history.

Yet beneath the polished surface of this prosperity, a darker, unspoken narrative began to crystallise.

Despite witnessing the highest accumulation of wealth in our history, the average person felt increasingly volatile and financially insecure. Despite living inside a matrix of total, instantaneous digital connectivity, populations reported epidemic levels of loneliness and chronic social isolation. Despite standing amidst a historically unmatched mountain of consumer goods, a growing majority of individuals struggled to anchor themselves to any enduring sense of meaning, localised belonging, or long-term stability.

The machine had successfully delivered on every single one of its material promises. The real question now is what happened to us in the process? It’s time to look at the human cost — the kind of damage that’s systematically omitted from a corporate balance sheet.

The Financial Enclosure of Shelter

If you want to see this contradiction in real time, look no further than the modern housing crisis.

Historically, the purpose of a home was fairly straightforward. It was a space designed for shelter, security, and emotional stability — the primary sanctuary through which families established roots and wove themselves into the social tissue of a community. While real estate certainly carried inherent economic value, its primary function was practical, relational, and social. It was an anchor first, and an asset second.

Over the past several decades, however, this ancient relationship has been radically dismantled across the Western world. Housing was systematically financialised. It was detached from its civic function and converted into a highly speculative, globalised asset class.

The mechanics of this transition were fuelled by a deliberate alignment of institutional incentives. Governments, eager to simulate wealth, aggressively deregulated financial markets and subsidised home ownership. Central banks flooded the market with historically low interest rates, creating an environment of cheap, addictive borrowing. Those nefarious characters on Wall Street and global investment funds, seeking guaranteed returns for institutional capital, entered the residential market at an unprecedented scale.

The International Franchise of the Mind

By the early 1970s, the domestic foundations described in Part I had largely been established. The “consumer citizen” had moved from a radical socio-economic experiment to a permanent feature of American life. Debt had successfully evolved from a temporary personal emergency or a moral failure into an ongoing, structural companion to everyday existence. Advertising had matured into a highly clinical, sophisticated science of persuasion, utilising psychometrics and deep narrative building to manage public perception.

Most importantly, following the structural decoupling of the dollar from gold in 1971, money itself had become increasingly detached from physical constraints. The age of fiat currency had truly arrived - an endless loop of credit backed by nothing more than collective blind belief and the promise of future consumption (hence why paper currency is structurally reduced to a mere “promissory note”).

Yet, a macroeconomic machine built upon the premise of perpetual growth faces a permanent, existential dilemma. It must either continue expanding its frontiers or risk stagnation and eventual collapse. A system engineered around ever-increasing consumption can’t easily tolerate limits, whether those limits emerge from geography, domestic population caps, resource depletion, or stagnant local purchasing power.

What followed was one of the most significant, quiet cultural transformations in modern history. While politicians spoke the high-minded language of democratisation, freedom, trade, and development, and corporations spoke the market-friendly language of innovation, convenience, and choice, a much deeper process was unfolding. The habits, subconscious assumptions, daily aspirations, and economic structures that had reshaped American society after WWII began spreading across much of the developed world.

This wasn’t a military conquest, it was a commercial one. No invading army crossed sovereign borders with conventional weapons. Instead, the frontline consisted of broadcast frequencies, financial products, brand logos, and lifestyle archetypes, all carrying a highly specific, standardised vision of modern life.

The remarkable aspect of this global transformation is that it rarely appeared ideological to those experiencing it. Most ideological movements throughout history announce themselves openly; they wave flags, publish manifestos, demand explicit political allegiance, and seek converts through overt pressure. Because they’re visible, they invite natural resistance.

Consumer capitalism achieved something far more subtle and permanent: it presented itself as mere common sense. It encouraged target societies to adopt its core assumptions not through external force but through internal aspiration. The American way of life became an international benchmark to emulate. And as populations fell in love with the dream, they willingly built the domestic institutions required to sustain it.

The American Blueprint Goes International

The decades following WWII witnessed an unprecedented expansion of American economic and cultural influence. Europe rebuilt its shattered infrastructure through capital injection programmes such as the Marshall Plan. Japan underwent rapid, highly structured industrial development under Western economic alignment. Australia, Canada, and much of Western Europe experienced rising domestic prosperity and real wage growth - an affluent era historically anchored by the emergence of the “Boomer” generation. This demographic shift wasn’t merely a biological phenomenon; it represented the birth of the most lucrative, heavily targeted consumer cohort in history.

At the same time, American corporations increasingly looked beyond their saturated domestic markets, bringing products, supply chains, and highly aggressive business models with them across the oceans.

Most fans look at a multi-million-dollar sports broadcast and see entertainment, but my background forces me to see something else entirely: the deliberate engineering of public perception.

Having mapped the dark money and systemic capture of the sport in my book Football for Sale, I wanted to turn my lens toward the media apparatus that sanitises and funds it all.

Modern sports broadcasting isn't failing by accident; it’s operating exactly as designed, trading analytical rigour for engineered tribalism and reality-TV narratives. To understand how the game's media coverage became so profoundly hollow, we have to look at the economic incentives driving the dumbing down of the product.

Here’s how the networks manufactured a million-dollar echo chamber, and what it’s costing the casual viewer.

As the sports media landscape leans increasingly on familiarity over expertise, a new genre of commentary has emerged: safe, superficial, and largely insulated from scrutiny.

“He just wanted it more.”

“That’s the kind of goal only a player who’s been there can appreciate.”

“Trust me, unless you’ve played at the top level, you don’t really get it.”

And my all-time favourite: “If they just score more, they should win the game.”

Sound familiar?

That’s the standard lacklustre soundtrack of modern sports commentary: mildly informative at best, condescending at worst. Yet these are the voices we hear across billion-dollar broadcasts in global football, NFL, cricket, F1, and even in Australia’s AFL and NRL. Former players, often hired within months of retirement, now dominate our screens with predictable takes and recycled clichés. Meanwhile, trained commentators, analysts, and journalists, many with sharper minds and actual broadcasting credentials, are left on the sidelines.

It’s not a mystery why. It’s business. But let’s not pretend it’s good broadcasting.

Follow the Money: Commentary as a Ratings Game

TV networks are blunt about what they need: Attention. Viewership. Engagement. Which means they need faces and voices that casual fans already know. And who better than a former captain, a World Cup winner, a Hall of Famer?

Networks want recognisability. So they shell out multi-million-dollar contracts to recently retired players whose main qualification is that they once wore the jersey. No journalism degree. No training in articulation or critical analysis. No objectivity. Just fame.

Behind the scenes, it’s about brand leverage and advertising slots. In Australia’s AFL coverage, big-name former players fill prime slots because they draw tribal loyalty; fans tune in to see their club legend speak, no matter what comes out of their mouth — usually drivel, tripe, and in most cases, both. In global football, the same logic applies. Want viewers in Lagos, London, and Lahore? Book the former Real Madrid or Man United star. Ratings first. Insight optional.

Dumb It Down: The Rise of Safe, Shallow Punditry

Modern punditry has increasingly become comfort food: repetitive, easily digestible, emotionally satisfying, and low-brow. Very low-brow. And the phrases are familiar:

“He’s got that in his locker.”

“At the end of the day, he just wanted it more.”

“She’s a natural-born winner.”

This is what passes for analysis in a multimillion-dollar industry. Strategy gets flattened into effort. Missed assignments are explained away with mood. And team failures are described with schoolyard phrases.

You could watch three different leagues on the same weekend and hear variations of the same truisms. Strategy is boiled down to effort. Mistakes are brushed off with platitudes. And storytelling? Reduced to personal anecdotes, often entirely self-referential.

It’s not that former players have nothing to offer. They have unique, lived experience. But insight isn’t the same as articulation. And analysis isn’t the same as memory. Most former athletes were never trained to communicate the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’. They speak in broad strokes, because that’s all they know.

In some cases, it works. Gary Neville has built a strong career from his deep understanding of systems and tactics, and has become a composed voice in sports media. And whilst we’re talking football, so has Ally McCoist, Karen Carney, Patrice Evra, and Danny Higginbotham. This group represent what sports broadcasting could look like if intellect, preparation, communication, and personality were prioritised over celebrity.

The NBA presents a similar dynamic, though with arguably more balance. Former players like Reggie Miller, Kenny Smith, and Jalen Rose have transitioned into broadcasting roles with notable success, blending their on-court experience with articulate analysis and media training. However, even in basketball, the presence of charismatic former players often overshadows professional analysts and journalists who bring complementary, research-driven perspectives. This underscores the wider industry trend: while a few former athletes elevate the discourse, the majority fall back on cliché and star power, reinforcing the need for a more balanced approach across all major sports.

But let’s not forget that these are exceptions. For every Neville et al, there are twenty who barely scrape beyond “they wanted it more.”

The Forgotten Masters: When Non-Players Led the Way

It wasn’t always like this.

In fact, some of the greatest voices in sports media never played at the elite level, yet they’re revered across generations. They brought language, poetry, context, and emotion to sport. And they elevated the viewing experience.

Peter Drury, football’s bard, whose commentary has gone viral across continents, isn’t a former player. Neither is Martin Tyler, whose calls defined eras. John Motson, with his encyclopedic mind and woolly coat, set the standard for English football commentary. Brian Moore. Barry Davies. More recently, Jonathan Wilson, Mina Rzouki, Derek Rae, James Horncastle and Seb Stafford-Bloor.

In Formula One, Murray Walker’s contagious enthusiasm made him an icon. In cricket, John Arlott and Tony Cozier became legendary for their storytelling and balance. None of them were internationals. All of them were professionals in the craft of commentary.

These people didn’t just “know the game.” They studied it, loved it, and could communicate it. They made us feel, understand, and care. That’s the job.

What We’ve Lost: From Substance to Star Power

When we rely on former athletes to fill the booth, we don’t just limit opportunity, we lower the intellectual ceiling of what’s possible. Commentary becomes reactive, anecdotal, overly subjective. The nuance gets lost. The moments that deserve sharp interrogation are glossed over with vague “been there, done that” nods.

A missed substitution, a bad offside trap, a manager’s tactical gamble; these deserve insight, not vibes.

It also affects fans. Broadcasters have quietly conditioned audiences to expect less, offering a diet of familiarity over depth. The less challenged the audience, the more predictable their consumption. It’s a feedback loop: shallow commentary breeds shallow expectations.

Meanwhile, the journalism grads, the tactical analysts, the linguistically sharp broadcasters, those who trained for years, struggle to break in. They don’t have the medals. Just the skill.

Jobs for the Boys: Media Gatekeeping in 2026

This isn’t just about “who’s on TV.” It’s about gatekeeping.

Broadcast execs build cliques around former players, building brands around familiarity and loyalty. New voices, especially those from diverse backgrounds or without elite playing experience, get told, explicitly or implicitly, that “fans won’t relate.”

That’s a lie.

The result is a commentary class that’s often stale, uncritical, and uninspired. The range of perspective shrinks. The room for dissent closes. And the idea that sports media could be a genuine space of inquiry, imagination, or accountability gets quietly erased.

The Better Way: Balance, Not Elitism

This isn’t a call to remove former players from media. Many have value. A handful are brilliant. But it’s time we stop pretending that being good on the pitch guarantees anything behind the mic.

The solution isn’t radical. Just balance. One or two former athletes per panel, complemented by trained analysts, journalists, tacticians, or even academic voices. Bring in the commentators who chose this profession, not those handed a mic after a testimonial dinner.

Let’s build commentary that respects the fan’s intelligence.

Let’s reward skill in communication, not just skill on the field.

Let’s end the old boys’ club and open the door to those who’ve spent years learning how to speak, write, and think about sport as more than just another locker room story.

Last year’s revelations from Nigeria make it clear: FIFA operates less like a sporting institution and more like the ultimate global laundering cartel, a machine so vast and so self-serving that even the mafia, yakuza and bratva put together would look like children playing dress-up. Grants meant for stadiums and youth academies vanish into shadow accounts; talent pipelines are exploited as currency; and accountability is treated as an optional sport.

The so-called development grants flowing into football federations are no longer investments. They’re cash-mines for the initiated. In Nigeria, the evidence is overwhelming.

Late last year, Nigeria’s House of Representatives resolved to launch a probe into the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) over the alleged mismanagement of more than USD $25 million in FIFA and CAF grants received between 2015 and 2025.

Lawmakers pointed out that despite this massive inflow, little to no tangible infrastructure, youth development or administrative reform has emerged.

Corruption’s Two-Pronged Engine in Nigeria.

• Money from global football bodies such as FIFA and CAF lands in a federation that lacks transparency or capacity, and instead of being spent on training grounds, youth academies, women’s teams, it’s channelled into private pockets.

• Domestic actors - agents, coaches, clubs - exploit this inflow by turning talented players into commodities on paper, often without any meaningful professional contract ever materialising.

Take for example the exclusive report by SCORENigeria (Oct 31, 2025). A national-team coach received a car worth 100 million Naira (USD 70,000) from a top agent in exchange for selecting his client in the final squad for an international tournament. An international tournament, no less.

This isn’t speculation, it’s whistle-blower testimony.

The entire racket lays bare how sporting merit is bypassed, how youth promise is hijacked, and how the players become tokens in a laundering machine.

And the NFF? It benefits indirectly: poor performance becomes a pre-text for more “reform funds”, more grants, more money that vanishes behind opaque accounts.

FIFA’s Role (Or Lack Thereof), and the Global Echo.

Remember that in 2015 the U.S. Justice Department accused FIFA of “rampant, systemic and deep-rooted” corruption - racketeering, wire-fraud, money-laundering. That crisis never ended. It has simply mutated into federations like Nigeria’s, where global money lands, local elites skim, and the governing bodies look away or pass the buck. In the Republic of the Congo a football-federation president was accused of embezzling USD 1.3 million of FIFA funds.

And I want to be clear: this isn’t African football-exceptionalism. It’s a global pattern.

FIFA insists that its member federations are autonomous and responsible for their own audits. Yet when federations fail, and fail spectacularly, FIFA remains institutionally absent, hiding behind legalese and “autonomy clauses” that conveniently absolve it of all responsibility.

It is the same playbook FIFA has used for decades: throw money at broken systems, issue a press release about “reform,” and retreat behind Zurich’s glass walls.

The buck doesn’t stop at the national gatekeeper; it stops with FIFA, the architect of this architecture of denial. They bankroll corruption through development grants, turn away when federations collapse under scandal, and only act when the FBI or Swiss courts force their hand.

The governing body of the world’s most watched sport has perfected the art of plausible deniability, while its executives toast “football development” in luxury hotels funded by the very money meant for kids who will never see a real pitch.

In Nigeria the parliamentary probe reminds us that accountability is only applied when external pressure forces it. Meanwhile the football-industrial complex keeps moving: agents, club owners, international scouts, even media celebrities, paid to remain silent, benefit from this machine.

The NFF’s corruption cannot be viewed in isolation.

When clubs in Europe, the Middle East or elsewhere enter into deals with Nigerian clubs or players sourced through the NFF network, they too become co-participants. They may claim due-diligence, they may hide behind “talent-spotting” rhetoric, but if players never secure contracts and the money trails lead into offshore accounts or luxury purchases, then these clubs and agents are part of a laundering ring in plain sight.

Consider a young Nigerian hopeful whose signature is bought, whose move is recorded, whose fee is channelled, but the player never arrives, never plays, never receives. That’s not chance, that’s a system.

Behind the smoke and mirrors sits the NFF, one gate to the vault.

Why this matters beyond Nigeria

• Because every national association that claims “development funding” from FIFA or a continental confederation becomes a risk node.

• Because every club that imports talent from weak-governance federations risks being complicit.

• Because players from poor countries are being treated as financial instruments, not human beings.

• Because when corruption overtakes football, youth talent is not just wasted, it’s stolen.

This matters not only for Nigeria but for every player, fan, journalist, agent and club in the global game. This is the world of Football for Sale.

My own son was drawn into this machinery, treated not as a player but as a product. That moment, watching him and others be exploited by a system that feeds on false hope and desperation, changed everything. This is what Football for Sale warned about from the very beginning - a sport auctioned to the highest bidder, where power and profit override integrity, and where governing bodies hide behind bureaucracy while the game’s soul is traded in open daylight. Global football is no longer just corrupt; it’s literally for sale.

Let’s stop buying into the narrative that the governance issues are local. They are systemic. They are global. The players deserve better. The sport deserves better. And the fans, everywhere, deserve the truth.

The Architecture of Consent

The greatest psyop in modern history wasn’t conducted during wartime. It didn’t require military uniforms, three letter agencies, or foreign battlefields. It unfolded in broad daylight, advertised on billboards, broadcast into living rooms, and eventually carried in every pocket. Its success didn’t depended on coercion, it depended on consent. Even crazier, those subjected to it often regarded themselves as its beneficiaries.

The operation was simple in concept and profound in consequence. It sought to transform citizens into consumers, communities into markets, and human aspirations into commercial opportunities. It encouraged people to measure progress not by what they could produce, repair, preserve, or pass on to future generations, but by what they could acquire. It replaced sufficiency with perpetual desire and persuaded millions that freedom expressed itself most clearly through consumption.

What follows will strike many readers as exaggerated. After all, the second half of the twentieth century delivered extraordinary advances in living standards: household appliances reduced labour, modern medicine extended life expectancy, transportation connected nations, and technology expanded access to information on a scale previously unimaginable. Credit where credit’s due — they’re huge wins.

What really matters, though, is how that progress brought new ideas that rewired our entire social fabric — permanently altering how individuals, communities, and governments interact. And we have to ask: were these changes just the natural side-effects of growing economies, or were they quietly engineered to serve powerful institutions at the expense of ordinary citizens?

To explore that question requires returning to a period that shaped the modern world more profoundly than most carefully curated history textbooks acknowledge.

Manufacturing the Consumer Citizen

In 1945, the U.S. sat at the centre of an unprecedented industrial empire. While the rest of the world lay devastated by war, America’s massive manufacturing engine emerged untouched, expanded, and roaring for action. But with the peace came a crisis: the factories that had built the Allied war machine were suddenly devoid of purpose. The machinery of mass production was still intact, but the slaughter that justified its existence had ended. Corporate leaders and policymakers didn’t need to figure out how to produce more. They had to figure out how to force a level of permanent public consumption that would keep the machines running.

For centuries, human survival dictated the economy, not the other way around. People bought food because they were hungry, clothes to stay warm, and tools to get work done. Luxuries were for the few; for everyone else, life was about satisfying immediate needs, not chasing endless wants.

But the post-war industrial machine couldn’t survive on mere human necessity. Production had exploded so violently that the entire system now depended on relentless, uninterrupted buying. If a family bought a well-made fridge and kept it for decades, the factory wheels would stop turning. If everyone already has a coat, a pair of shoes, a table, a bed, a lawnmower, a toaster, a vacuum cleaner, then what? The machine stops. The economy collapses. The system dies. To stay profitable, the system demanded a new kind of citizen: the perpetual consumer, trapped in a cycle of recurring purchases and endless acquisition.

So, they invented something new. They invented desire. Not need. Desire. They hired psychologists. They studied Freud. They learned how to bypass your rational mind and speak directly to your insecurities, your fears, your dreams. No one masterminded this psychological capture more effectively than Edward Bernays. The self-appointed ‘father of public relations’ understood a dark truth: people are rarely driven by logic. They’re governed by emotion, insecurity, status, and fear. Bernays realised that if you could attach a product to a person’s deepest vulnerabilities, you were no longer just selling a useful object, you were selling an identity.

With this insight, the material world was weaponised. A car was no longer a tool for transportation; it was a verdict on your personal success. A house stopped being a shelter and became a billboard for your social standing. Brands became cultural badges used to signal status and belonging. Suddenly, advertising wasn’t selling products at all. It was selling narratives, and the public was buying its own reflection.

Then came television, the ultimate trojan horse.

For the first time in history, corporate power gained an uninterrupted pipeline directly into the family living room. Commercial messaging was no longer an occasional nuisance in a morning newspaper; it became the environment itself. Every evening, millions of families gathered around the glowing screen, willingly absorbing a highly calculated, algorithmic stream of desires. They thought they were being entertained, but they were actually being re-educated.

The conditioning was so effective that by 1953, families nationwide were happily singing corporate slogans aloud in their own living rooms, turning the Pepsodent toothpaste jingle ‘You’ll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent’ into a household anthem. This wasn’t just marketing; it was a collective hypnosis (“tell-a-vision”, “programming”).

Under this relentless bombardment, the traditional foundations of human identity — occupation, community, faith, and family — were systematically eroded. In their place stood a hollowed-out proxy: the consumer. From this point forward, personal expression was reduced to purchasing decisions, achievement was measured in ownership, and the soul itself was bartered for a cultural language written entirely by the market.

The genius of the system lay in its ability to transform desire into a renewable resource. Human needs possess limits. Human aspirations don’t. Once status became attached to consumption, satisfaction became temporary by design. There would always be a newer model, a larger home, a more fashionable wardrobe, or a more desirable lifestyle waiting beyond the next purchase.

The economic benefits were undeniable. The American economy expanded rapidly. Employment remained strong and living standards improved. Yet beneath the prosperity, a deeper transformation was underway. Consumption had ceased to be a means toward a better life and increasingly became the organising principle of life itself.

The War on Self-Sufficiency

Every economic system breeds its own culture, rewarding what keeps it alive and starving what threatens it. The post-war consumer machine found its ultimate survival mechanism by rewarding absolute dependency on mass institutions while systematically choking out self-sufficiency.

This domestic surrender didn’t require a shadowy conspiracy or secret boardroom meetings. It was far more elegant: it was engineered through incentives. But the fallout was catastrophic.

A household that knew how to preserve food possessed a dangerous degree of independence from corporate supply chains. A community that bartered locally retained a built-in immunity to economic collapse. A family capable of fixing its own gear stripped power away from the manufacturer. These habits kept people free. And that’s precisely why the market had to destroy them.

The decades following the war saw the aggressive rise of a new religion: the cult of convenience. Supermarkets spread like wildfire across the landscape. Packaged, processed foods multiplied. But to ensure the factory wheels never stopped, this cult of convenience was paired with a more calculated, and recent, corporate strategy: planned obsolescence. Products were no longer built to endure; they were deliberately engineered with an expiration date, ensuring that machines broke, styles expired, and the stream of repeat customers never ran dry. Through it all, the propaganda of Madison Avenue advertising hammered home a single gospel: to be modern was to buy, and to be civilised was to avoid effort.

Of course, the trap bait was genuinely sweet. Food took less time to prepare. Shopping became effortless. Households gained access to comforts that past generations could only dream of. But this convenience was never free; it was a Faustian bargain. As the commercial machine expanded, human capability shrank.

Knowledge that had been passed down through families for centuries evaporated in a generation. Communities stopped leaning on neighbours and began begging from corporations. Real resilience was stripped away from the home and replaced by a monthly bill from a stranger thousands of miles away.

For decades, this profound vulnerability remained invisible. As long as the weather held, the trucks ran, and the global supply chains delivered cheap abundance at extraordinary scale, the illusion of security was total. The shelves stayed full, so the public stayed asleep. But illusions require perfect conditions, right? And it’s only when the gears of the system inevitably grind to a halt that a hollowed-out society realises it no longer knows how to survive without them.

When natural disasters strike, markets crash, or supply chains fracture, they expose a terrifyingly simple reality: modern society is immensely complex, but incredibly fragile. By systematically wiping out the practical wisdom that once allowed communities to weather a storm, we’ve traded our safety nets for a mirage.

The irony is as dark as it is undeniable. We became historically wealthy by becoming completely helpless. Progress expanded our comfort by narrowing our independence, leaving us utterly incapable of surviving without the very institutions that engineered our dependency.

We can debate whether this was an accidental by-product of modernisation or the deliberate triumph of corporate capture. But the baseline reality is beyond dispute: we’ve bartered away our ancestral self-sufficiency for a fragile convenience, and in doing so, we’ve left ourselves entirely at the mercy of the machine.

Debt as Social Architecture

If manufactured consumption provided the fuel for the post-war economy, debt provided the engine. But it was an engine designed to do more than move capital; it was built to regulate human behaviour.

For generations, debt carried a profound social stigma. To borrow was to admit a loss of autonomy; it was a temporary, painful necessity. Financial honour was rooted in saving, outright ownership, and the quiet dignity of delayed gratification. The second half of the twentieth century systematically inverted this morality.

As credit cards, instalment plans, and predatory lending flooded the mainstream, financial institutions realised that the ordinary household was an untapped goldmine. But the true fallout of this credit explosion extended far beyond the balance sheet. Debt is a psychological leash.

A person tethered to a lifetime of financial obligations approaches the world with caution. They can’t afford to take risks. Career choices narrow into survival strategies. Geographic mobility freezes. Political attitudes tame. The courage to challenge an employer, dissent against an institution, or resist prevailing social norms is quietly starved out by the cold reality of the next monthly billing cycle.

Of course, the apologists for this system point to the utility of credit — the mortgages that buy homes or the loans that launch businesses. But this utilitarian defence masks a deeper, more predatory transaction: debt is the monetisation of time. In effect, your future labour is mortgaged to pay for your present sedition.

The post-war machine embraced this trap with corporate euphoria. By decoupling consumption from actual wealth, it created a society that no longer needed to produce before it spent. Economic growth exploded, but it was growth built on a dangerous illusion: consumption ceased to reflect what you had earned, and began to reflect merely what you were permitted to borrow.

By the dawn of the twenty-first century, this financial gravity had become the very air we breathe. Student loans, mortgages, car payments, and revolving credit transformed chronic indebtedness from a personal failure into the mandatory baseline of adulthood. We were told this credit expanded our freedom. The reality is far, far simpler: it replaced ownership with obligation, ensuring that the citizens of the wealthiest empire in history would remain too compromised, too tired, and too indebted to ever revolt against the machine.

The Financial Illusion

The final, overarching pillar of the consumer age is built on a subject most people avoid as too technical, too abstract, or too utterly boring to question.

Money.

We spend our lives chasing it, bartering our limited time on earth for it, and building our entire futures around its presumed value, without ever stopping to ask what it actually is. Yet over the past century, money itself was subjected to the most radical, quiet transformation in human history.

And it’s happening again right now, as I write this piece. Just as the mid-twentieth century systematically dismantled the gold standard, we’re currently living through the next great monetary mutation — the quiet push toward a fully cashless, digitised dragnet.

For thousands of years, money was bound by the laws of physics. Because it was tied to precious metals, it possessed a natural relationship to scarcity. Governments could manipulate currency, but they couldn’t conjure gold or silver out of thin air through administrative decree. The system had a built-in emergency brake. The mid-twentieth century systematically dismantled that brake.

The devastation of the Great Depression of 1929 was weaponised by policymakers to centralise financial control, constructing a banking system insulated from public scrutiny under the guise of “stability.” By 1945, the Bretton Woods Agreement had crowned the U.S. dollar as the undisputed centre of the global financial universe. But the ultimate trap was sprung in 1971, when 37th U.S. President Richard Nixon severed the dollar’s last remaining tie to gold.

The gravity of this moment simply cannot be overstated. With a single executive order, the global financial system was unmoored from physical reality. Money became a ghost — an abstraction backed by nothing more than the promises of governments and the threats of central banks.

The architects of this shift called it “flexibility.” In reality, it handed an elite predatory financial cartel the unlimited power to print prosperity for themselves, finance endless deficits, and manipulate human behaviour on a global scale.

We’re living in the wreckage of that decision today. It’s why asset prices skyrocket while real wages stagnate. It’s why the financial casino grows hyper-profitable while the ordinary worker drowns. It’s why our economy is plagued by regular, catastrophic collapses that no amount of “sophisticated” central banking can prevent.

This is why the language used by puppet leaders today is so deeply insidious. When politicians and media talking heads endlessly lament the ‘cost of living crisis,’ they’re pulling a linguistic sleight of hand. They frame our economic suffering as if it were a natural disaster — a random, blameless storm that simply rolled in over the horizon.

This isn’t an academic disagreement about inflation or housing affordability. This is the dark heart of modern inequality: a system that forces the public to work harder and harder for a currency designed to lose its value, keeping the populace too exhausted, too insecure, and too financially bound to ever look up and see the bars of the cage.

And this exposes a dark and uncomfortable truth. The modern consumer economy didn’t just happen to fall into this pattern; it actively required a monetary system capable of fuelling engineered spending indefinitely. It required a money supply that could be printed without limit to keep the public running on a treadmill that never stops.

By the closing decades of the twentieth century, the trap was fully set. The self-reliant citizen had been systematically replaced by the hollowed-out consumer. Practical capability had been bartered away for toxic convenience. Indebtedness had become the mandatory baseline of adulthood, and money itself had vanished into a digital abstraction.

The machinery of psychological and economic capture was complete. And it was no longer content to remain inside the U.S. It was primed, perfected, and preparing for global export.

Over the last few weeks, social media users began feeding passages from Shelley’s Frankenstein into AI detection programs including GPTZero, Copyleaks, Scribbr, and other widely used tools now embedded throughout academia and publishing. In several circulating examples, passages from Shelley’s 1818 novel received scores suggesting partial or substantial AI authorship. A novel written more than two hundred years before the invention of LLMs triggered warnings for AI. Huh?

People treated the result as a joke, Reddit threads exploded with disbelief, online forums mocked the detectors for accusing one of history’s most studied literary works of sounding algorithmic, while others defended the software and argued that old writing styles confuse modern detection systems.

That defence makes the situation worse.

If a detector struggles to distinguish between canonical human literature and machine output, then why are universities, publishers, literary agencies, editors, and employers treating these systems as legitimate arbiters of truth? The whole system starts to feel less like technological progress and more like an industry protecting itself with smoke and mirrors, whilst quietly extracting value from fear, uncertainty, and institutional dependence.

And that question is the crux of this whole debate. Yet nobody inside institutional power structures wants to answer it. Or, at the very least, answer it honestly.

The Mary Shelley example carries significant weight because it exposes the central deception behind AI detection tech. These systems don’t understand writing, they don’t understand originality, and they clearly don’t understand literature, voice, intent, symbolism, ambiguity, emotion, satire, rhythm, experimentation, or historical context. They identify statistical familiarity. That’s it.

AI Detectors?

What do these programs do exactly? Well, the detector scans sentence structures (yes, plural), punctuation patterns, vocabulary distributions, predictability scores, and stylistic consistency. Then it compares those traits against probability models trained on existing human writing and machine-generated text. Which means the entire system is built on a contradiction from the ground up.

AI learned to imitate human language by consuming colossal amounts of human language. Then Silicon Valley, aka BigTech, built detectors to identify writing that resembles the language patterns their own systems absorbed from writers in the first place. Yep, writers trained the machine, and now the machine accuses writers of sounding like itself. That’s nothing short of cultural cannibalism wrapped in corporate branding.

Meanwhile, the flying monkeys, or defenders, of AI detection software continue repeating the same exhausted argument: the tools are imperfect but useful. During the COVID era, for example, we all heard nearly identical language surrounding fact-checking systems embedded across media platforms and social networks. Those systems arrived carrying the same promise of institutional protection (think Fact Checkers, Snopes, PolitiFact, et al). Trust the experts they told us. Trust the system. Trust the labels appearing beneath content.

Years later, we all woke to the scam that took place and recognised what had happened. Fact-checking operations frequently operated less as neutral arbiters of truth and more as enforcement mechanisms for approved narratives. Major stories dismissed as misinformation (aka conspiracy theories) later turned out to hold substance and, dare I say it, come to fruition. Public trust collapsed because institutional certainty repeatedly collided with reality.

Across universities worldwide, students increasingly face accusations based on software outputs that even the companies behind the systems admit are unreliable. Yet institutions continue deploying them because they provide something modern bureaucracies value more than truth: plausible deniability.

A professor no longer needs to explain why a paper feels suspicious. An editor no longer needs to articulate literary concerns. A publisher no longer needs to risk investing time in reading difficult work. Because the software flagged it. Case closed. It’s intellectual laziness disguised as technological sophistication, embraced by institutions that increasingly prefer automation over thought, risk avoidance over judgment, and convenient software outputs over the hard work of reading, analysing, and thinking for themselves.

And this is precisely where the Mary Shelley debate becomes frighteningly devastating.

Frankenstein didn’t confuse the detectors because Shelley wrote badly. It confused them because LLMs increasingly mimic the polished, grammatically coherent, structurally balanced prose common to educated writing. Writers developed those conventions over centuries. AI absorbed them through mass ingestion and then regurgitated them as a dense, unstable mix of borrowed patterns stripped of context, intent, and authorship. That’s what remains when they’re all stripped away. Pure slop.

Then – and here’s the irony - the AI detector industry arrived and reframed those same conventions as “suspicious”. People’s obsession with em dashes offers one of the clearest examples of this insanity. At one bizarre point across the social media spectrum, people were accusing writers of using AI because they were employing em dashes, clean syntax, or orderly paragraph structures. Some writers even started altering their natural voice to avoid false accusations. Think about the absurdity of that cultural shift - writers modifying their styles to avoid resembling machines that learned language patterns from… writers!

But wait, there’s more. The contradiction becomes even uglier once copyright enters the conversation.

In August 2024, authors filed lawsuits against Anthropic and other AI companies alleging unlawful use of copyrighted books to train LLMs. Writers argued that corporations harvested human intellectual labour on an industrial scale without permission or compensation. At the same time, those same corporations and affiliated industries increasingly promoted systems that accused writers of sounding artificially generated. Welcome to The Twilight Zone, folks.

And don’t think for a minute that this is part of “progress”, because the implications are staggering. An author spends decades developing a voice. A machine consumes millions of books containing voices like theirs in days. The machine reproduces statistical echoes of those patterns, and then identifies the original (human) style as suspicious because the AI model already absorbed it.

So what the hell exactly are writers supposed to do with that? Write worse? Write messier? Insert deliberate grammatical flaws to prove humanity? It breaks my heart to say this, but many already do. What we’re actually witnessing is a slow collapse of confidence in human intellect in real time.

University lecturers and professors – those woke career academics with doctorates in gender politics who come from a breeding ground for mediocrity where outrage, conformity, and a lack of self-awareness thrive — openly advise students to avoid “overly polished” writing because detectors might flag them. Sure, let’s allow a failed education system rewrite the rules of language. Online communities now exchange tactics for “humanising” prose. Some writers intentionally break sentence flow, remove punctuation, introduce awkward phrasing, or simplify vocabulary to reduce suspicion. I call that cultural regression driven by technological paranoia.

Meanwhile, companies behind AI detectors continue marketing certainty they can’t reliably provide. GPT Zero markets itself heavily within education. Copyleaks promotes AI detection for institutions and enterprises. Scribbr presents its detector as an academic integrity solution. The branding language always sounds authoritative — precision, accuracy, confidence, trust.

Yet independent testing repeatedly reveals contradictions, false positives, inconsistent results, and detector disagreement across identical texts. One detector flags a passage as human. Another flags it as AI. A third produces mixed probability scores.

The weak institutions blindly relying on these systems rarely discuss those inconsistencies publicly because the illusion of authority matters more than the reliability of the result. That pattern appears everywhere in modern tech culture. Build first, scale aggressively, capture institutional dependence, and normalise flaws later.

People defending these systems often respond emotionally when criticism appears. Anyone questioning AI detectors gets labelled anti-tech or resistant to progress. Yet criticism of unreliable systems is not anti-tech, it’s the foundation of intellectual seriousness. And as we all know, technology without scrutiny becomes ideology.

The Shelley debate spread online because it compressed the entire problem into one unforgettable image: a literary masterpiece from 1818 accused of being artificial by software built in the twenty-first century.

Frankenstein now feels disturbingly prophetic in ways Shelley herself never intended. Her novel explored humanity’s obsession with creation detached from moral responsibility. Victor Frankenstein became consumed with the act of building life while refusing accountability for what emerged afterward.

The public already sees the damage spreading through education, journalism, publishing, art, music, and online communication. AI-generated slop floods search engines and social feeds while authentic (human) work struggles for visibility inside algorithmic ecosystems designed around engagement volume rather than intellectual value.

Now the same tech culture responsible for flooding the internet with synthetic language sells detection systems claiming to protect humanity from synthetic language. It’s akin to the arsonist arriving carrying a fire extinguisher.

That’s why the Mary Shelley debate resonated so strongly online. Because people instinctively recognised the absurdity, and because the absurdity exposed the larger truth.

AI detectors are dressed up as guardians of originality while doing little more than guessing patterns and calling it authority.

And before the angry mob comes at me with pitchforks and torches screaming the “false positive” rhetoric, the danger extends beyond false positives. The deeper threat involves what these systems train society to believe about creativity itself. Once institutions accept algorithmic probability scores as substitutes for human judgment, originality gets reduced to something a piece of software is asked to approve before anyone is allowed to read it.

That shift corrodes culture at its foundation because great writing breaks patterns while machines reward them, and that clash was always going to happen.

Mary Shelley exposed it simply by existing within the system being tested.

Drawing from historical context, nutritional discourse, and modern food systems, it explores how breakfast moved from flexible human behaviour to structured social expectation. With so many people I know across various industries now out of work, partly due to cost-cutting measures and the rapid evolution of these sectors, it’s time we addressed the elephant in the room. AI is not coming for your job. It already has. What follows will rustle a few feathers and might scare the living daylights out of more than a few. That’s not the intention. But it’s what happens when truth replaces comfort.

For decades, the job search followed a familiar pattern: you found a role on a job board, spent time tailoring your CV, wrote a cover letter, sent the application, and waited. Sometimes for a day. Sometimes for weeks. Often for nothing. At first, you assumed someone would get back to you. When no one did, you blamed the volume of applicants or maybe a mismatch in experience.

But after applying for hundreds of jobs over the years with little to no response (predominantly through platforms like Jora, SEEK, Indeed, CareerOne, and LinkedIn Jobs), a deeper truth became clear to me. The jobs never existed. And the platform did little to address the issue of rogue advertisers. What’s more, so many others I know have shared the same frustration.

It’s widely documented that job boards are littered with expired, duplicate or placeholder roles. These are known as ghost jobs: positions that are either filled, no longer funded, posted to gauge the market, or never open in the first place. You’ve probably applied for one this week.

Recruiters know it. Candidates know it. Platforms don’t care. And this isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s exploitation of your time, energy, and professional dignity.

Traditional recruitment platforms like those mentioned above thrive on volume. The more jobs they post, the more users they attract. The more users they attract, the more data they collect and sell. Your job search becomes someone else’s business model.

The Illusion of Opportunity

There’s a widely held belief that if you apply for enough jobs, eventually something will land. But that assumes the jobs are real, the platform is curated, and the process is designed for you. None of that is true anymore. Recruitment agencies and job platforms are built to serve companies, not applicants.

Their revenue flows from employers, not the job seekers driving the numbers. And because the system is designed to feed employer visibility and platform traffic, candidates are often left as passive participants. Reduced to keywords in an applicant tracking system or stuck refreshing their inboxes. This is not broken by accident. It’s broken by design.

The result is a job market where effort doesn’t match outcome. Where skilled, motivated individuals spend hours every week applying for positions that never reply. The emotional toll is real. It feels personal, but it’s structural.

My Experience with AI Recruitment

AI-generated code has already made simple frontend development redundant. Platforms enhanced by AI allow anyone to launch production-grade websites without hiring web developers, designers or engineers. What was once the work of teams is now done by individuals. Let me blow your mind:

• Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence): Wix’s AI-powered tool builds websites automatically by asking a few questions about your business or purpose. It creates layouts, writes copy, and selects images tailored to your inputs.

• Framer AI: Lets you generate entire responsive websites using short prompts. It outputs production-ready React code and is especially useful for landing pages and portfolio sites.

• Durable: Builds a business website in under a minute from a single prompt. It includes copy, layout, and integrated tools like CRM and invoicing, focused on freelancers and small businesses.

• TeleportHQ: Converts Figma files or text descriptions into clean HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It’s geared toward developers and teams who want rapid prototyping with editable code.

• 10Web: Uses AI to replicate or generate WordPress-based websites from prompts or existing URLs. It’s popular among users who want to move fast on a CMS-based platform.

Customer Support

Chatbots and automated service tools now handle up to 80% of incoming requests in banking, insurance, and retail. You used to speak to someone. The human contact centre is disappearing. Now you type in a chat box and get a response within seconds. That’s not efficiency. That’s automation.

AI-driven customer service has overtaken human support in scale, speed, and cost. Banks, telcos, airlines, and retailers rely on AI-powered systems to answer questions, process refunds, reset passwords, and triage technical issues. What used to require a department of trained support staff now runs through a language model that never takes breaks, doesn’t call in sick, and doesn’t forget what you said last week.

Zendesk, Intercom, and Salesforce have all integrated AI to handle tier-one support. These systems understand intent, sentiment, and urgency. They escalate only when needed. And they learn from every interaction. For the company, it’s faster and cheaper. For the customer, it means instant response time. Unfortunately for support workers, it means fewer jobs, shorter contracts, and more pressure to justify human value.

If your job is answering questions from a script or logging tickets into a system, AI has already made you optional.

Legal Services

This is a game changer.

AI platforms can now scan and analyse thousands of pages of case law in seconds. They can generate contracts, draft NDAs, employment contracts, leases, cease-and-desist letters and conduct discovery work in a fraction of the time and cost, and with better accuracy. Junior legal roles, the ones that train future lawyers, are drying up. Law was once protected by complexity. AI doesn’t care about complexity.

DoNotPay offers AI-generated legal support for consumer issues like parking tickets, refunds, or small claims. Lexis+ AI helps lawyers summarise case files, generate arguments, and find precedent. Harvey, a legal AI tool built on OpenAI’s models, is already being used inside major global firms like A&O Shearman.

Large firms are keeping the lawyers. They’re simply replacing the legwork and the fallout is clear. The pipeline of junior lawyers, the roles where experience is built, is drying up.

So, if the research, drafting, and document review can be automated, what remains for a law graduate with a student loan debt of USD$120,000?

Clients now expect faster, cheaper service. They’re questioning why they should pay by the hour when AI can deliver in minutes. Whilst this won’t end the legal profession, it will hollow out the middle. And it will make many legal roles disappear before most people even notice.

Journalism

You would be asleep at the wheel if you didn’t already know that journalism is no longer written only by journalists.

AI platforms now write headlines, generate articles, summarise press releases, and optimise stories for clicks. Bloomberg, Forbes, and Reuters use AI to publish earnings reports and data-driven stories faster than any human. Local newspapers are using AI to write weekend AFL, ARL and A-Leagues roundups, weather summaries, and community updates. The volume of AI-written content is already massive, and it’s growing.

Tools like Jasper and Copy.ai produce blog posts and marketing content at scale. ChatGPT drafts op-eds and interviews (with em dashes to boot… but that’s for another article). Phrazor.ai generates earnings summaries. None of these are “coming soon.” They’re already live, publishing thousands of pieces every day.

The issue isn’t just speed. It’s cost. One AI subscription replaces a freelance pool. Writers are chasing fewer gigs. Editors are reviewing, not assigning. And media outlets are downsizing staff while publishing more content. So, what happens when the news no longer needs a newsroom? The role of human journalists isn’t necessarily gone. It’s simply fighting for space against cheaper, faster, AI-generated competition. In a world flooded with content, being human is no longer enough. You have to prove your value, every time you file a piece.

Unlike journalism or law, Recruitment has no defence. It’s not based on specialised training or irreplaceable human judgement. It’s based on volume and network. And AI is better at both.

A System That Was Never Designed for You.

Traditional recruitment has always carried a structural imbalance. Candidates are asked to prove themselves through documents, systems and communication channels that favour companies. The employer holds the information, the leverage, and the ability to ignore.

Applicants are told to be grateful for the opportunity to compete. But the economy has changed. Cost of living is rising. The time you spend applying is time you don’t get back. The energy you waste chasing ghost jobs is energy you don’t recover. AI flips that model. It puts your qualifications at the centre of the process, not your ability to navigate outdated systems. This is not just a shift in tools. It’s a shift in power.

So Why Are We Still Pretending?

Let’s ask the real questions:

• Why are you still using job boards that don’t validate their listings?

• Why are you sending out cover letters no one reads?

• Why are you letting your qualifications get filtered by algorithms not designed to serve you?

• Why do companies still pay recruiters to do what AI can do better in minutes?

There’s a stubborn nostalgia in many industries. A belief that the old ways worked and can be fixed with tweaks. But job seekers don’t need tweaks. They need results. And recruiters, in many cases, aren’t adding value anymore. They are slow. They rely on gut instinct. They gatekeep. Worst of all, they perpetuate a system where activity is rewarded more than outcomes.

It’s Already Here.

AI hiring platforms are not experimental. They’re operational. They are working now. And they are delivering faster, more accurate, more human job experiences than their human-driven predecessors. I’ve proven that.

If you are still relying on platforms that require you to apply 50 times for one response then you’re not job hunting. You’re data farming for them. There’s a new way. And it works.

Time to Wake Up.

Recruitment, as a profession and industry, is clearly being restructured. Agencies, job boards and legacy systems are still clinging to relevance, but the smart candidates and smart companies are already moving on. They’re not waiting for a call back. They’re not tweaking their CV for the millionth time. They’re not writing another paragraph about why they’re a “great cultural fit.” They’re using AI platforms that show them live jobs matched to their skills, and get them in the room.

If you’re reading this and you’re a recruiter, ask yourself: What do you provide that AI can’t?

If you’re a hiring manager, why are you still paying for outdated systems?

OK, so I had to weigh in on a strange claim spreading across social media.

Apparently, if your writing uses an em dash, you didn’t write it. ChatGPT did. Or DeepSeek. Or Perplexity. Pick your LLM machine.

According to this logic, thousands of human writers — past and present — must be fakes. And yes, there are plenty of em dashes in this post, too, so feel free to report me to the Em Dash Police.

Let’s get something clear. The em dash isn’t new. It’s not a sign of lazy thinking. It’s not a neon sign that says, “AI wrote this.” It’s a legitimate punctuation mark used since the 18th century. In fact, the concept of dashes as punctuation marks dates back to the 15th century.

Here’s what an em dash is for:

• It separates clauses for clarity.

• It introduces emphasis or interruption.

• It replaces parentheses and colons, depending on tone.

That’s it. That’s all. That’s grammar. It’s not some robot watermark. It’s not a machine fingerprint. It’s style. It’s choice. It’s language in motion.

Writers — real ones — choose punctuation on purpose.

We know what the em dash does. We also know when not to use it. And yes, sometimes we use more than one. Because flow and meaning matter more than the approval of a comment section.

So why are people — particularly non-writers — acting like the em dash is guilty by association? Because an LLM occasionally uses it too? Since when did punctuation become a Turing Test?

Here’s what’s actually happening: A lot of people are trying to sound like experts on writing — without understanding writing. They’ve confused style with source. Syntax with software. Grammar with gimmick. It’s easier to say “AI wrote this” than to admit you don’t understand tone, structure or rhythm. And it’s far easier to point at punctuation than to engage with content.

Writing has always evolved where styles shift, and rules soften. But when a tool — like the em dash — is pushed aside by those who never learned how to use it, that’s not evolution. That’s laziness. Or fear. Or worse, groupthink.

Let’s be honest: Most LLMs produce flat, forgettable slop. That’s not because of punctuation. That’s because they don’t know how to think. They predict. They don’t create.

The em dash doesn’t belong to the machines. It belongs to people who know how to write. People who understand flow. People who see structure as a tool, not a threat. People who know grammar isn’t an aesthetic — it’s a system.

So no, the presence of an em dash doesn’t mean AI wrote it. It might just mean a trained writer did. That should be respected, not questioned.

The following two composite stories, crafted from patterns observed in career transitions, help illustrate common experiences among mid-career professionals navigating AI-driven change. While not tied to specific individuals, they reflect real challenges and strategies seen across Australia, the UK, and Canada.

Composite 1: 38-year-old former marketing manager, Australia. Let’s call her Sara. Her work once centred on brand storytelling, client engagement, and campaign planning. His case reflects a growing necessity in the UK for mid-career professionals to understand and use AI as a survival tool.

The following true stories show a more radical approach.

Case 1: Estelle and Emily, two friends in Melbourne Australia, made national headlines after quitting high-paying corporate roles to pursue purpose-driven businesses. Just in the past few months, CEOs of global giants including Ford, Anthropic, and Amazon have stopped speaking in cautious hypotheticals and started issuing warnings. Not about some distant future, but about what’s already here.

AI, they now admit, is beginning to wipe out white-collar jobs at scale few anticipated. Yes, you read that right: at scale.

Jim Farley, Ford CEO, recently told the Aspen Ideas Festival that artificial intelligence will severely impact white-collar roles in the coming years. His actual words were “Artificial intelligence is going to replace literally half of all white‑collar workers in the U.S”. He wasn’t alone. Anthropic’s Dario Amodei predicted that as much as 50 percent of entry-level corporate roles will vanish in the next five years, driving unemployment to levels not seen in decades. Andy Jassy at Amazon added that AI will “inevitably” reduce corporate headcount.

These are not fringe voices or doomsday theorists. They run the world’s most influential companies.

So What’s Actually Happening?

Let’s look at the evidence. Not the headlines, not the narratives, but the current, observable transformation of white-collar work across key industries.

The report highlights how AI isn’t just cutting jobs. It’s reshaping the very fabric of office work.

In marketing teams, generative AI is now drafting campaign copy, analysing performance data, and creating ad variants in seconds. In legal departments, contract analysis, due diligence, and litigation prep, once the domain of junior associates, are being handled by AI tools with a high level of accuracy. The most telling detail is that many of these implementations are being rolled out at the team level. Workers become faster, then indispensable. Their colleagues, those doing things the old way, become redundant.

Amazon is offering virtual clinics and prescription delivery alongside your grocery order. Google’s acquisition of Fitbit and its push into AI-driven health search shows a serious pivot toward preventative care via data.

And as self-care becomes systematised, it’s not just patients whose roles are shifting. So are doctors’. If algorithms handle diagnostics, wearables flag early symptoms, and AI chatbots provide therapy or treatment suggestions, what becomes of the physician’s authority? Will doctors evolve into data interpreters, health coaches, or liability buffers for automated decisions? Or will clinical expertise be eroded by constant digital second opinions?

Let’s explore two striking real‑world examples: Toronto’s Artly café and Dubai’s WOOHOO restaurant with ‘Chef Aiman’ (AI+man).

In Toronto, Artly is an AI‑only café with no human baristas. Robotic arms grind beans, steam milk, create latte art and serve customers who order via kiosk or app. Staff are limited to technicians and maintenance personnel. The robots deliver consistent quality, speed and scale, transforming coffee service into a predictable production line. Customers get novelty and reliability at minimal labour cost. Artly has expanded in Canada and USA, and rebranded automation as an expressive, experiential feature rather than mere efficiency. Watch the video below. In Dubai, the futuristic WOOHOO restaurant opens in September 2025 near the Burj Khalifa. Its “chef” is a large‑language model, or LLM, named Chef Aiman (AI+man), trained on decades of food science, global recipes and molecular gastronomy.

Aiman designs menus, ambience, even mixology suggestions. Real life/human chefs led by Reif Othman test and refine Aiman’s menu prototypes, providing sensory feedback. The model focuses on sustainability by re‑using ingredients often discarded, such as trimmings or fat. The aim: elevate culinary creativity, not eliminate the human chef.

These are not isolated experiments. AI is already reshaping every part of hospitality, from chatbots handling guest enquiries to dynamic pricing systems, smart rooms that adjust ambiance, and predictive maintenance that avoids downtime.
