RELEASE PARTY: Debut Mixtape from The Jazz Lifers Community

My uncle Steve used to take me to this comic book shop just west of Chicago. I remember this really cool-looking building on the corner across the street. It looked amazing from the outside, but honestly it never quite looked like it fit in - there was something weird about it.

Decades later, I find myself working my side-gig: delivering likes & subs in the South Bayside districts of 3CITY. To my surprise, right here in the City was the same familiar neon marquee and cobblestone building from my childhood memories - transformed into a badass jazz club.

On this particular night, the line outside was massive. Each time the door opened, I could hear the most amazing house band killing it on stage. A few weeks later, I tracked down the owner, SH Watkins, to ask him about the place's history and its significance in the city. He wasn’t able to give me an interview for this release, but he and I have a great relationship. I’m on the studio’s guest list, so hit me up if you ever wanna come check it out, and shoutout to SH for being an #A1 choom since the womb LOL!

Which leads me to this exciting announcement/development…

Anyway, in what’s become the weekly norm, I hit the My Jazz Lifer’s community on Substack. I’ve sent hella subs over there this year - even gifted some subs - and I really like the articles they’ve been putting out that focus on timeless music. I really fux with the choomers over there, especially in their community chat discussions, which is where I found some of the cuts on SIDE A.

SIDE A came through as the result of a botched podcast I wanted to start where I tour the districts of the 8 known sectors in 3CITY. You’ll hear it on the tape… I left meeting the band All Funkin Good, and on my way to the interview I had planned with their manager, I hit a detour that left me stranded near the Symbir district.

I announced a debut release this summer on my AUDI5000 blog back in June. At the time, I spoke to my neighbors in the city, and we came up with what you see as SIDE B of this tape: a dive into the vapor of our ethernet alleys in 3CITY, featuring some of our known accomplices, Outlet Crew members, and some Youtube homies we’ve made along the years. My broski came up with the title "Everything is Jazz," which seems to be the major site of interest for us this year. You’ll see me pushing that vehicle pretty heavy in these eclectic streets, so as always - likes and subs mean a lot!

EVERYTHING IS JAZZ’s digital drop is free to any subscribers here and paid members of Our Jazz Life on Substack, and this is just one of the two releases we’re delivering via this community. The other piece is my side-quest called “Everything is Revolution” - it’s a musical and narrated journey through the legacy of Brian Jackson and Gil Scott-Heron, told in their own words - presented by Mark Ruffin (the Jazz Griot).

New Sites to See in the City

The city is under a bunch of construction, but there are glimpses of progress here and there. For those who may be uninitiated, our community had been looking for a new home for over a year, when an initiative called MEGASTRUCTURE started. I’ll save the full story for another time in our STORIES series, but eventually our journey led us here to Substack. Time moves differently here in the city - we’ll have a chance to get into the backstory elsewhere, friends. For now, we really appreciate you coming in and getting to know some of the landmarks built by creators and enthusiasts like you!

There’s a crazy story surrounding Dana, a notorious data smuggler, who became the founder of a mysterious intelligence and security agency. Dana Loveful’s story is one of adventure, drama, and triumph as you follow her ascent into the Eclectic City’s Outlet Crew. World Building

You will come across all manners of city dwellers if you stick around long enough. There are the droning agents and bot, the ingrams and avatars of other users. Still, there’s the Outlet Crew - Residents of the City who manage to walk in both the actual and virtual realities, using their creativity as their vehicle. Their works and aspirations manifest as inhabitable buildings here in the Eclectic City as these members progress with their projects. As they make their way across the liminal ether of the internet, we’ll make sure to update you on their journey.
