Last week we re-posted “Where We Start” entry, so it makes sense to next share “Where We’re Going” the companion piece where Jonathan first laid out the worlds and moons of this new story universe.

Same disclaimer as the first go around. This post, the follow up to Part I: Where We Start, is the next chunk of information that we gave out to other creators regarding our societal system builds. 

This one gets into specifics regarding the THREE WOLRDS and THREE MOONS that make up 3W3M. 

SYSTEM MAP

There are eight planets in this star system. The inner and outer planets are separated by a super dense (much denser than our own) asteroid field, and our worlds exist inside a generous goldilocks zone (we’ll get into actual distances and planet composition later, but for now, assume that the map below is a general representation, but not to actual scale). 

THREE WORLDS. THREE MOONS. 

AKVA [WORLD]

Our first planet, AKVA, has no moons and the surface is entirely covered with liquid (we’re implying water here, but as we get into the research, I’m sure there’s going to be something neat we can do like a liquid oxygen or one of the oxygen combinations deep seas divers currently use. Maybe this will make ‘underwater’ a better medium for story...or not, we’ll see). 

Anyway, at the heart this world, is KHOR. This is the glowing cold fusion/magically conducive ‘goo’ that powers everything in the solar system regardless of which cycle (science or magic) we are in. This planet is the most accessible place to find this stuff (it does exist on one other, outer planet in this system -- in fact, it’s more abundant there than here, but for now this is the easiest place to acquire it). It can be captured/distilled/refined when it bubbles off the planet’s exotic goo mantle and cools in the surrounding liquid (this is an INDUSTRY).

The planet has two nations/governments -- both are theocratic, and of a single religion with with two major sects (like Sunni/Shia or Catholic/Protestant, but more in practice or in line with Buddhism -- but honestly, let’s be open to throwing all those references away in the hopes of something cooler. After all, to quote some asshole writer, ‘We have new gods now.’).  While these two nations are NOT technically at war, they are in constant conflict based on the wildly erratic yields of Khor (it works like solar flares -- there are periods of high activity and low, which directly affects the level of conflict). Both sects engage in the mining and excavation of Khor, but each individual sect only services one of the other two planets (so they each have an exclusive trading partner). And because Khor is the most important resource in the universe -- and fighting over it is actually against their religion -- each of the theocratic governments are able to easily lure bravos, mercenaries, and soldiers of fortune to fight in proxy battles over the mining of it.

There’s more, but you get the idea. 

FAYRII [WORLD]

A world ruled by a monarch (King or Queen) -- it seems to be a feudalistic planet that, at first glance, appears ‘evil’ (but is actually just ruthlessly rigid in opposition to the dynastic chaos going on elsewhere). 

The thing to remember here is that the  ‘mythological symbolism’ of the universe being in an endless cycle is paramount here. The King or Queen reigns until one of their children is able to replace them (let your imagination run wild at all the ways this could be done) and become the new King or Queen. 

The huge number of royals engaged in attempts to destroy each other -- and fight for an opportunity to replace the monarch of Fayrii -- all live completely separate from the King or Queen. They live on...

HEIR [MOON]

A bit like Monte Carlo, Macau or Dubai, this moon is an opulent distraction for the extremely wealthy, criminal masterminds, and thrill seekers throughout the star system. 

While it is technically controlled by the monarch of Fayrii, the moon is mostly under the daily control of crime bosses and the constantly-warring aristocracy. 

Those vying for the throne wage secret wars of betrayal and assassination and, sometimes, the innocent are caught in the middle. 

This is the best place. This is the worst place. 

THERRA [WORLD]

ORDO [MOON]

KAOSO [MOON]

THERRA is where our story begins. All the other stuff -- the heart of our mythology -- is cranking away in the background of everything until we reveal it later -- it’s all color at the start. This world, and it’s two moons (Order and Chaos, or ‘Science’ and ‘Magic’) thematically represent everything we’re trying to do message-wise. 

This world is run by a self-appointed group of ‘politicians’ that are basically representative stand-ins for the plutocrats, schools, corporations and institutions that run the planet (now, again, we’re not going to call these things that, for this document they’re just substitutes). 

Mike and Mike are still nailing down the aesthetics of this. We’re looking at some kind of holographic 60s, or something where technology is just an overlay, but I think wherever we land, there will be a heavily element of ‘weird fun’ also. Like, everything seems to make sense -- to follow some kind of familiar logic -- until you go to the spaceport and you don’t take a spaceship to another world or moon, you hitch a ride on a space slug or something like that. Which should be fun.

Regardless, that’s the mechanical world building stuff. Grinding against that is all the end-of-the-science-age/rise-of-the-magic-age stuff. About that...

In the same way that those cycles ebb and flow, the state of these moons wax and wane between the highest order of advancement and the ruins of a lost society. SO...right now, the ORDO is the most technologically advanced place in the solar system (and secretly runs THERRA). In contrast, the KAOSO basically exists as an archaeological site, where alien others built monuments of scientific nonsense (except...some of it is starting to work again), and the environment is uninhabitable for ‘humans’.

Okay, That’s about it for today. 

I know that we were supposed to have a housekeeping post, but after talking about it with the guys, we think that needs to be a living FAQ where you can constantly ask questions in the comments and we just refer to that page over and over (this should be up very soon). And we unlocked some really exciting new possibilities for the Founding Members that we want to make sure are fully built before we tell you about that.

This post really laid out the core “rules” of the story universe, and the cycles of magic and science therein. It was our first attempt to pull back the curtain and show how this stuff gets worked out and developed in real time.

All right, just a few notes up front:

This post, and the next one: WHERE WE’RE GOING, are essentially the same thing we gave to other creators (specifically, Al, Ram, and Tini during this first release period) when we asked them to build out the systems that you’re going to be seeing over the next few weeks. A few things to keep in mind:

• I am going to be using words like ‘good’ and ‘evil’ in here, along with things like ‘science’ and ‘magic’ as placeholders -- these will not be the terms used in the actual stories. It’s okay at this point to think of them like that, as that’s roughly what they are placeholders for, but this is an alien culture we’re talking about, and when you’re ‘in-story’ good/evil and science/magic tend to short-circuit readers in a trope-y kind of way. We don’t want to do that.

• Thematically, the grand story that we’re telling here is about the coming rebirth of creativity (again, it’s okay to refer to this as ‘magic’ right now) in a universe that has become overly-structured, systematic, cynical, and cold (‘science’). Perhaps much like our own. 

• The mythology of this universe is cyclical. There are grand cycles of ‘science’ and ‘magic’. Both can be -- and are -- ‘good’ and ‘evil’.

HOW IT WORKS

Our story take place in last century of the ‘science’ cycle of an alien solar system. Cycles are hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years long and work like this: As an ascendent cycle approaches its apex, it reaches maximum acceptance as an ideology/belief system and is therefore susceptible to excess and corruption -- and so, it becomes the most ‘evil’ version of that system. Contrary to that, when cycle reaches its lowest point, it is at its most rare -- and idolized -- form and is the most ‘good’ version of that system. There are both ‘good’ and ‘evil’ actors for both systems at all times, but the proportions of each tend to reflect the overall current corruption of each system. 

This corruption leads to the reason/purpose for why a system must be overthrown (as well as the emergence of its opposing system) and therefore why all of this is cyclical and will never stop being cyclical. 

So the question is why -- beyond telling a story about the rebirth of creation -- are we setting our stories in the death throes of a science cycle and not at the actual point of change or the birth of it?

Good question.

• We want it far enough away from the previous cycle that the last ‘magic’ cycle reads to the characters (and therefore the readers) as ‘lore’ or ‘mythology,’ and not yet real.

• We want this mythology -- the actual rebirth -- to read as a personal journey that is experienced and therefore needs to take place at a looming inflection point.

• We want -- if this is successful, people like it, and we reach narrative escape velocity -- to have the ability to portray the changeover as a societal shift: The actual collapse of an old age and the beginning of a new one. Which will give us a really big place to go.  

Here’s how those storytelling conventions graph out:

THE SETTING

This solar system has a sun much like our own (roughly the same age and color), but instead of only having a single planet inside its goldilocks zone, this system has three habitable worlds which also have three habitable moons (which is what all our mythology/iconography is built around).

We’re going to give you a map of the system and in depth descriptions of the worlds tomorrow in the second part of our Primer, but here’s the big thing you need to take from it conceptually. 

THE MYTHOLOGY/SYMBOLOGY

This basically revolves around two concepts. The Three Worlds, Three Moons making up the six elements of the universe (three major, three minor), and the cyclical duality that all life is trapped in.

These two concepts will go on to make up the majority of all numerological, religious and political divisions in society and will be reflected whenever we’re creating anything that’s organized, systematic, or institutional. 

(So, everything should have either a cyclical/dual nature, or some base 3 organizational structure [like 3 plutocrats rule over 9 senators, who then rule over 27 regional governors...that kind of thing]). 

That looks like this: 

Or, when reduced down to a more formalized (and maybe elegant) major/minor structure, it looks like this:

Which, if you’ve been paying attention, might look familiar to you.

At the time, we had no idea what to expect, and no time to reflect on any of it. Those early days were absolutely dizzying as we set it to try something that had really never been tried before, to our knowledge: create a brand new universe of stories, in real time, in public view.

Since then, we’ve produced thousands of pages of comics and world building material, shipped four beautiful deluxe hardcovers and a slew of other physical rewards (with more on the way soon!), launched our own platform and mobile app, and announced a long-term publishing partnership with Dark Horse Entertainment, with the first book debuting in comic shops just last month.

But that’s really just scratching the surface. From the in person meetups to the livestreams, all the way to The Competition, far and away the best part of this entire experience has been the community that was formed. That’s what made all of this possible, and worth doing in the first place.

In the coming weeks, to celebrate together, we’ll be publishing a series of commemorative ‘best of’ posts. We’ve had hundreds of new signups as a result of FOUNDATIONS arriving in shops, and this feels like the perfect opportunity to catch them up on what they missed, as well. Along the way we’ll add some new commentary and reflections in the mix.

Should be a lot of fun. And once again, thank you all for your continued support. We’ve taken so many steps in the past year to realize the full vision of what this can be, because of you and your belief in this. We’re so grateful you came along on this journey with us, and excited for what’s ahead.

Then, also on Friday, from 5:30pm-6:30pm, we’ll be hosting a 3 Worlds / 3 Moons panel in Room 5AB, with Jonathan, Nick, Molly, and Frank all on stage.

When we launched 3 Worlds / 3 Moons, we did so with a pretty ambitious vision: to not just build a new universe of stories from the ground up, but to pull back the curtain and do it in front of and in collaboration with our audience. To make the work explicitly for them and deliver it directly, and form a community around it.

Almost 5 years later to the day, the whole project has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams, and lasted longer than any of us likely would’ve predicted back then. We’ve released thousands of pages of comics and lore, shipped multiple [REWARDS] packages full of beautifully designed and printed books (with another on the way shortly), and held countless community events both digitally and in person.

But we always knew at some point we’d want to take this work and introduce to the larger comics audience; and today that happened with the release of FOUNDATIONS in comics shops everywhere, via our previously announced partnership with Dark Horse Entertainment. We’re obviously excited to welcome these new readers to what we’re doing here, as well, so to that end, we’ve got another announcement to make…

Wanted to do a post about Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman’s kickstarter for the Undying Love Hardcover. It’s almost a certainty that most of you either don’t have a copy of the regular trade of this book or, considering that it came out some time ago, probably didn’t even know it existed. But man, you should...because this thing is just gorgeous.

I’m an unabashed Tomm Coker fan and when this first hit, it was right after he had done Daredevil Noir and 5 Ronin (the Wolverine one) for Marvel. This dude was just absolutely cooking at the time -- and swear to god, every single page was a masterpiece.

It was pretty much that run of books (along with an issue of The Ride [#7!!]) that spurred me on to call him up and beg him to do a book with me called The Black Monday Murders (which is not too bad).

So, below is some art for Undying Love and the press release, and if you have a couple bucks to throw toward the project, you’ll not only get a hell of a book out of it, but if the project goes well, we’ll all be funding the long-promised final volume. Which I really, really want to read.

And yes, Tomm is settling all family business (me too!). So after he finishes up Undying Love, he and I are putting the wraps on the last two issues of Black Monday Murders (to join the completed but not yet published #9 and #10) -- it’s good news all around.

Hope you’ve all been doing well. It’s been a little quiet on the outside, but internally, we’ve never been busier- as we race to the finish line on ARRIVALS, our next big release.

ARRIVALS, as a reminder, is a 3-issue guided tour of the 3 Worlds / 3 Moons story universe, written by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Spencer, featuring a frame sequence drawn by Mike Huddleston, and short features from some of the best artistic talent in comics: James Stokoe, Christian Ward, Juni Ba, Mirka Andolfo, and Matias Basla.
