February 2024. I was flying to the US for a generative AI event, invited as one of a handful of ASEAN startups doing this work early enough to be on the list. Badge printed, hotel booked for a few nights, return flight the following week. I packed for a week, because that’s what it was.

I’d never particularly wanted to come to America. I was curious about Silicon Valley the way you’re curious about any place people won’t stop talking about. I mostly wanted to see whether it looked like anything. The plan was to go, look at it, and come home.

I was in transit in Dubai when the news came through that the military had activated the conscription law.

I read it on my phone at the gate. I want to describe what that was like and I find I can’t, really. It wasn’t dramatic. Nobody around me knew anything had happened. I just sat there and understood, in a slow and very physical way, that the return leg of my ticket had turned into a different kind of document. Men my age were going to be taken. Like almost literally. Within weeks people I knew were making decisions about borders and money and whether to answer the door.

I got on the second flight anyway. What else do you do. I landed with a carry-on and a company on the other side of the planet and no plan of any kind.

The part where you have to argue for yourself

The first thing I did was file for TPS. It’s what the US offers people from countries that have gone badly wrong. You’re allowed to be here, and to work, for as long as the designation lasts, and the designation lasts as long as somebody in Washington says it does. I filed it so I could stop panicking long enough to think.

While I was thinking, a lot of people told me to just apply for asylum.

I understood why. It’s the obvious route for someone in my situation, and it’s the one with a path to permanence, and every single person who suggested it meant it kindly. Why are you making this hard for yourself? Take the door that’s open.

I never seriously considered it, and I’ve been asked enough times that I should probably explain. It’s not really something principle, and I’m wary of dressing it up as one. It’s that I had some idea of who else was in that line. People with nothing (no company, no publication record, no lawyer they could pay, no other door to try). I had other doors. Standing in a line I could step out of, in front of people who couldn’t, was something I didn’t want to be doing.

So I took the harder one, which is a US visa category for people with what the government calls extraordinary ability. I’d like to say something about that name. It sounds like a compliment. In practice it’s a filing cabinet.

What you actually do is sit down and build a written case that you are extraordinary, about yourself, with exhibits. If you were raised where I was raised, this is close to physically painful. You go through your own career for months hunting for evidence. The mobile app from 2012, when almost no one in the country was building them. The first commercial AI system that could understand Burmese well enough to sell. A dataset paper. Letters from people who worked with you, now obliged to say generous things in legal language. You end up reading your own life the way a skeptical stranger would, in bullet points, checking which parts survive contact with a form.

And underneath it, this constant hum: none of this was done for this. I wasn’t building a case. I just love building products, I was doing these mostly by trial and error, mostly badly at first. The case was a byproduct. It happened to be the byproduct that could keep me out of a war.

I finally got it. My TPS was going to expire at the end of the year and I got it, and the relief was enormous.

I’m grateful for that.

And I want to be plain about this part, because the rest of what I’ve written here is fairly cool about America and this isn’t. A country I had no claim on, where I knew almost nobody, looked at what I’d built somewhere else and said yes. Not many places do that. I’m grateful for it in a way I still don’t quite have words for, and I don’t want to be casual about it.

What sits underneath the gratitude is the knowledge that a lot of people as capable as me didn’t get it, because they hadn’t published, or hadn’t documented, or, like me until someone told me, didn’t know the visa category existed at all. The difference between us was not ability. It was paperwork and timing and luck. I try to hold both things at once that I was let in, and that being let in was not a verdict on the people who weren’t.

Running a Yangon company from a place I’d never been

There comes the practical mess.

My company is a Burmese-language product. Every user types in Burmese. Every client is in Myanmar. Every person on my team is there. And I had made exactly zero preparations to be absent, because I’d packed for a week.

A friend of mine moved abroad around the same period and did it properly. Months of planning, handover documents, a manager briefed, cat sitters lined up. I had none of that. I didn’t even say a proper goodbye to my mother. She was at her meditation centre when I left, and I told her I’d see her when she got back.

The handover happened retroactively, over months, from a bedroom in Pennsylvania, while I was also working out how health insurance functions and what a credit score is.

Pennsylvania was the wrong time zone. Yangon’s nine in the morning landed around half past ten at night for me, so my company’s entire working day ran while I was supposed to be asleep. I worked nights. I’d take calls until 5AM or 6AM, sleep badly, get up into an afternoon that felt like somebody else’s, and do it again. That went on long enough to wear a hole in me.

So I started looking at where else I could be. I wanted the West Coast. Better time zone, and I liked everything about it. The weather, the mountains, the water, the general sense that the landscape was on your side. Then I looked at what it cost.

The arithmetic didn’t work. I was earning in Myanmar and spending in America, which is the arbitrage running exactly backwards. Everyone does the sensible version of earn in dollars, spend somewhere cheaper. I was doing the reverse, paying full US prices on revenue from a country whose currency was doing what its currency was doing. Anyone would tell you that’s a silly way to live and they’d be right. Keeping my expenses low wasn’t really a preference. It was the whole structure holding the thing up.

So I picked Austin. Chosen on a spreadsheet, more or less. Cheaper, central time, close enough to the middle that nothing is impossibly far.

And then I fell in love with it, which I didn’t plan for either. It’s genuinely mixed. You hear five languages in a grocery store and nobody finds that remarkable. It feels closer to home than anywhere else I’ve been here in America. And the weather, which everyone warned me about, turned out to be roughly Mandalay in the summer. I grew up with that. I know how to dress for that. Texans complain about the heat to me and I don’t have the heart to tell them.

The time zone is still eleven and a half hours, so their morning is my late night, and my overlap with my own company is a narrow window at the end of the day. But I sleep now.

Plenty of things broke because of the distance.

Context. In an office you absorb information without doing anything. Someone’s annoyed. A client called twice. Something’s quietly not working. From here, none of that reaches me. Problems show up already escalated, already a week old, already shaped into someone’s version.

Speed. Every clarifying question costs a day. A four-minute conversation becomes a three-day thread and a worse decision.

Relationships. Deals in Yangon get built across a table with tea. That layer does not delegate cleanly and pretending otherwise has cost me.

Slack for my own mistakes. When I was there, a bad hire was something I could absorb with my own hours. From here it’s just damage, and I find out late.

Things that changed for the better. Well, mostly by force.

Everything living in my head had to get written down. How we hire, how we decide, what to escalate, what to ignore. I’d been the documentation for years without noticing. The company is more legible now than it ever was when I was in the room.

I started automating things I used to just handle. If something falls over at three in the morning my time, I’d rather a system catch it than a person wake me up. A meaningful amount of our infrastructure exists purely as a substitute for my body being in the building.

And I stopped firefighting, because I can’t. What I do instead is think about where the product goes, which is the job I should have been doing for years and never did, because there was always something on fire in front of me.

Where this leaves me

I’m in Texas. I have a green card, a wife, a cat who recently turned into a cat and five kittens, a job at a Fortune 5 company, and enough spare weekends to take a car and race it properly. By any external measure this is a good outcome, and I don’t want to be precious about it.

But I don’t tell it as a story about ambition, because it wasn’t. I never dreamed of this place. I went to a conference to represent Burma. The world moved while I was in the air, and everything after that was me building a life backwards from where I happened to be standing.

I think about the version where the law came a week later, and I was home when it did. I don’t think that man is doing badly, necessarily. He’d have found something. I just know he’s someone else.

I don’t have a moral. I just wanted it written down somewhere before I stopped remembering it clearly.

သူတို့မှာ တူညီတာက အသက်ကြီးတာတစ်ခုတည်း မဟုတ်ဘူး။ သူတို့က လူမျိုးရေး၊ ဘာသာရေးတွေကို လက်နက်လို အသုံးချတယ်။ နိုင်ငံရေးအတိုက်အခံကို နိုင်ငံရဲ့ ရန်သူတော်ကြီးလို ပုံဖော်တယ်။ သူတို့ခေါင်းထဲ စွဲနေတဲ့ စိတ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ အမာရွတ်က ၂၀ ရာစုအလယ်ပိုင်းက ရခဲ့တဲ့ဟာတွေ။ တစ်ယောက်နိုင်ရင် တစ်ယောက်ရှုံးရမယ် (zero-sum) ဆိုတဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်၊ ရှင်သန်ဖို့ဆိုရင် တခြားသူကို လွှမ်းမိုးထားမှဖြစ်မယ်၊ အင်အားကြီးတယ်ဆိုတာ စစ်အင်အားပဲ၊ လုံခြုံတယ်ဆိုတာ အရာအားလုံးကို ထိန်းချုပ်ထားနိုင်တာပဲလို့ သူတို့ယုံကြည်တယ်။ စစ်အေးခေတ်ရဲ့ ကြောက်လန့်မှုတွေ၊ ကိုလိုနီခေတ်လွန်ရဲ့ စိတ်ဒဏ်ရာတွေက သူတို့ကို ပုံသွင်းခဲ့တယ်။ သတင်းအချက်အလက်ကို ထိန်းချုပ်လို့ရတယ်၊ နယ်နိမိတ်တွေက အရင်လိုပဲ အရေးကြီးတယ်၊ အကြမ်းပတမ်း နိုင်ငံတော်အာဏာကသာ အရာရာအဆုံးအဖြတ်ပေးတယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်တဲ့ မျိုးဆက်ပေါ့။

ဒီမျိုးဆက်ကြီးက သက်တမ်းကုန်ခါနီးပြီမလို့၊ သူတို့တွေသာမရှိတော့ရင် သူတို့ရဲ့ အာဏာရှင်စနစ်ပုံစံတွေပါ တစ်ခါတည်း သေဆုံးသွားလိမ့်မယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်ချင်စရာကောင်းပါတယ်။ ဒစ်ဂျစ်တယ်ခေတ်မှာမွေးတဲ့ ခေါင်းဆောင်ငယ်တွေက ပွင့်လင်းမှု၊ ပူးပေါင်းဆောင်ရွက်မှုကို ပိုလိုလားလိမ့်မယ်လို့ ထင်ချင်စရာပါပဲ။

ဒါပေမဲ့ သမိုင်းကြောင်းပြန်ကြည့်လိုက်မယ်ဆိုရင်တော့ တွေးစရာတွေ အများကြီးပေါ်လာနိုင်ပါတယ်။

မျိုးဆက်တိုင်းက "ငါတို့ကတော့ မတူတော့ဘူး" လို့ အမြဲကြွေးကြော်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။ ပြင်သစ်တော်လှန်ရေးသမားတွေက ဘုရင်နဲ့ မှူးမတ်တွေကို ခေါင်းဖြတ်သတ်လိုက်ရင် အာဏာရှင်စနစ်ကြီး အဆုံးသတ်ပြီလို့ထင်ခဲ့တယ်။ ၁၉၆၀ ခုနှစ်တွေက အမေရိကန်လူငယ်တွေက "ငါတို့ဘယ်တော့မှ အစိုးရမလုပ်ဘူး" (never become “the man”) လို့ ကြွေးကြော်ခဲ့ကြတယ်၊ နောက်ဆုံးတော့ သူတို့ကိုယ်တိုင် အစိုးရဖြစ်လာကြတယ်။ ၂၀၂၁ ခုနှစ် ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေဟာလဲ “၂၁ မှာဒီအချိုးတွေ လာမချိုးနဲ့” ဆိုပြီး ပြောခဲ့ကြပါတယ်။

ဒီလိုပုံစံက ကမ္ဘာ့နိုင်ငံအသီးသီးမှာ အမြဲတမ်း ထပ်ခါထပ်ခါဖြစ်နေတာ ဘာလို့လဲဆိုတော့ အာဏာက မျိုးဆက်မရွေး လူကိုဖျက်ဆီးတတ်လို့ပါပဲ။ အာဏာရပြီးတဲ့နောက် အထီးကျန်ဆန်လာတာ၊ ကိုယ့်ကိုထောက်ခံတဲ့သူတွေရဲ့ စကားကိုပဲ နားထောင်မိတာ၊ ထိန်းချုပ်ရတဲ့ အရသာကို စွဲလမ်းသွားတာ၊ ဒါတွေက မျိုးဆက်တစ်ခုရဲ့ ပြဿနာမဟုတ်ဘဲ လူတွေအားလုံးရဲ့ အားနည်းချက်တွေပါပဲ။

အဲဒါကြောင့် နောက်မှာ တန်းစီနေကြတဲ့ ခေါင်းဆောင်ငယ်တွေက ပိုပြီး ဒီမိုကရေစီကျလာနိုင်မယ်လို့ ပြောလို့မရပါဘူး။ သူတို့က အာဏာကို ပိုပြီးခေတ်မီမီ၊ ပိုပြီးစနစ်တကျ အကွက်ချပြီး ကိုင်တွယ် ကျင့်သုံးတတ်လာဖို့က ပိုများပါတယ်။ အယ်လ်ဆာဗေးဒေါက ဘူကီလီ (၄၃) ကိုကြည့်၊ Twitter နဲ့ Bitcoin ကိုသုံးပြီး သူ့အာဏာကို သူတည်ဆောက်နေတယ်။ ဆော်ဒီက ဘင်ဆယ်လ်မန် (၃၉) က ခေတ်မီတဲ့ပုံစံတွေပြနေပေမဲ့ နောက်ကွယ်မှာ ဒစ်ဂျစ်တယ်နည်းပညာနဲ့ လူတိုင်းကို စောင့်ကြည့်နေတယ်။ ခေတ်သစ်လူငယ်ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေ နားလည်လာကြတာက အာဏာနဲ့လူကို တိုက်ရိုက်အကြမ်းဖက်တာက အလုပ်မဖြစ်ဘူး၊ ကိုယ့်ရဲ့ platform ပေါ်မှာ မှီခိုအောင်လုပ်ထားတာက ပိုထိရောက်တယ် ဆိုတာပဲ။ အင်အားသုံးပြီး မြင်သာတဲ့ အာဏာရှင်စနစ်က တော်လှန်မှုတွေကို မွေးဖွားပေးလေ့ရှိတဲ့အတွက်၊ အဲ့ဒီအစား "ကြားနေ” မျှတပါတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ algorithm တွေကနေတစ်ဆင့် မမြင်ရအောင် ထိန်းချုပ်ဖို့ကြိုးစားလာကြပါတယ်။

ဒီနေ့ခေတ်မှာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ မြင်လာရမှာက အာဏာရှင်စနစ်ဟောင်းတွေ တစ်ဖြေးဖြေး အဆုံးသတ်သွားတာမျိုးမဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ မသိသာတဲ့ (ပိုပြီးကြောက်စရာကောင်းနိုင်တဲ့) ပုံစံသစ်တစ်ခုအဖြစ် ပြောင်းလဲသွားတာမျိုးပါ။

ခေတ်ဟောင်းပုံစံက နိုင်ငံပိုင်မီဒီယာနဲ့ သတင်းကို ထိန်းချုပ်တယ်။ ခေတ်သစ်ပုံစံက algorithm တွေကို လိုသလိုပြင်ပြီး သတင်းကို ထိန်းချုပ်တယ်။

ခေတ်ဟောင်းပုံစံက ဗဟိုဘဏ်နဲ့ ငွေကို ထိန်းချုပ်တယ်။ ခေတ်သစ်ပုံစံက cryptocurrency ကို စည်းမျဉ်းတွေ၊ ကုမ္ပဏီကြီးတွေကနေတစ်ဆင့် ထိန်းချုပ်ဖို့ ကြိုးစားလာကြတယ်။

ဥပမာဆိုရင် Bitcoin ကို အစိုးရနဲ့ ဘဏ်တွေရဲ့ လက်ကလွတ်အောင်ဆိုပြီး ဖန်တီးခဲ့ကြတယ်။ အခုတော့ BlackRock လို ကုမ္ပဏီကြီးက Bitcoin ETF တွေရောင်းနေပြီ။ အစိုးရတွေက ကိုယ်ပိုင် ဒစ်ဂျစ်တယ်ငွေကြေး (CBDC) တွေဖန်တီးနေပြီ။ နည်းပညာအရ ဗဟိုချုပ်ကိုင်မှုမရှိဘူးလို့ ဆိုနိုင်ပေမဲ့၊ အသုံးပြုနိုင်တဲ့ လမ်းကြောင်းတွေနဲ့ လူမှုအလွှာတွေကိုတော့ တစ်ဖြေးဖြေးနဲ့ ဗဟိုကပဲ ချုပ်ကိုင်လို့ရအောင် စီမံကြိုးစားလာကြပါတယ်။

ပင်လယ်ကြီးက လွတ်လပ်ပေမဲ့၊ ဆိပ်ကမ်းအားလုံးကိုတော့ ထိန်းချုပ်ထားသလိုပေါ့။

AI မှာလည်း ဒီပုံစံအတိုင်းပဲ။ OpenAI က "Open" ဆိုတဲ့နာမည်နဲ့၊ လူတိုင်းအတွက် AI ဆိုပြီးစခဲ့တယ်။ အခုတော့ သူက ကမ္ဘာပေါ်မှာ “Closed” အဖြစ်ဆုံး နည်းပညာကုမ္ပဏီဖြစ်နေပြီ။ ထရီလီယံဒေါ်လာတန််ကျေးရှိတဲ့ ကုမ္ပဏီဖြစ်ဖို့ လမ်းကြောင်းပေါ်ရောက်လာပြီးတဲ့နောက်မှာ၊ သူတို့နောက်ကလိုက်လာတဲ့ တခြားကုမ္ပဏီတွေ၊ တီထွင်ဖန်တီးနိုင်မှုအသစ်တွေ တက်မလာနိုင်အောင် "ဘေးကင်းလုံခြုံရေး" ခေါင်းစဉ်တပ်ပြီး အာဏာပိုင်တွေနဲ့ပေါင်းရင်း ဥပဒေတွေနဲ့ လှေကားဆွဲသိမ်းဖို့ အသည်းအသန် ကြိုးစားနေပြီ။ Opensource AI ကို ဆန့်ကျင်တဲ့ သူတို့ရဲ့အကြောင်းပြချက်တွေက တီထွင်ဖန်တီးနိုင်စွမ်းနဲ့ အသိပညာပြန့်ပွားမှာကို ကြောက်တဲ့ ရှေးက အာဏာရှင်တိုင်း ပေးခဲ့တဲ့ အကြောင်းပြချက်တွေနဲ့ တစ်ပုံစံတည်းပါပဲ။

နည်းပညာ Platform တွေက အစိုးရတစ်ပိုင်းလို ဖြစ်လာကြပြီး၊ သူတို့မှာ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဥပဒေ၊ ကိုယ်ပိုင် ပိုင်နက် (platforms) နဲ့ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ပြည်သူ (users) တွေ ရှိလာကြတယ်။ သူတို့က အကြမ်းဖက်ခြိမ်းခြောက်တာမျိုး မလုပ်ဘူး၊ အချက်အလက်တွေနဲ့ ကြိုတင်ခန့်မှန်းပြီး လူတွေရဲ့ အပြုအမူကို လိုသလို ပြုပြင်ပြောင်းလဲပစ်လာနိုင်တယ်။ ဒါတွေက ၂၀ ရာစုကလို အကြမ်းပတမ်းကိုင်တွယ်တဲ့ အာဏာရှင်စနစ်မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ ပိုပြီး သိမ်မွေ့၊ ပိုပြီး လွှမ်းခြုံနိုင်တဲ့ စနစ်သစ် တစ်ခုဖြစ်လာတာပါပဲ။ အာဏာရှင်စနစ်သစ်က အကျဉ်းထောင်တွေမလိုဘဲ၊ ဒေတာတွေရှိရင်ရပါပြီ။

ဒီတော့ တကယ်တမ်းမှာ ကျွန်တော်တို့မြင်ရမှာက အာဏာရှင်ဟောင်းတွေပြိုကျသွားမှာမျိုးထက်၊ အာဏာရဲ့ ထာဝရ စုစည်းလိုတဲ့ သဘောတရားကိုပဲ ပိုပြီးထင်ထင်ရှားရှား မြင်လာကြရမှာပါ။ ရေက နိမ့်ရာကို အမြဲစီးသလို၊ အာဏာဆိုတာကလည်း တစ်နေရာတည်းမှာ ပြန်စုစည်းဖို့ အမြဲကြိုးစားနေတာပါ။

နောက်တက်လာမယ့် မျိုးဆက်သစ် အာဏာရှာဖွေသူတွေက ခေတ်သစ်အာဏာအတွက် operating system ကို update လုပ်ဖို့ကြိုးစားရှာဖွေနှင့်နေကြပြီးပါပြီ။ ပိုင်ဆိုင်မှုတွေကို ချုပ်ကိုင်တာထက် လုပ်ငန်းစဉ် (protocol) တွေကို ချုပ်ကိုင်တာက ပိုအရေးကြီးမှန်း သူတို့သိကြပါတယ်။ Bitcoin နဲ့ပဲဥပမာပြောရရင်၊ အနာဂတ်မှာ အာဏာရှိဖို့က Bitcoin အားလုံးကို ပိုင်စရာမလိုဘူး၊ Bitcoin ဝယ်တဲ့၊ ရောင်းတဲ့ လမ်းကြောင်းတွေကို ထိန်းချုပ်နိုင်ရင် ပြီးပြီ။

ဒါဟာ Thomas Hobbes ပြောတဲ့ "အားလုံးက အားလုံးကို စစ်ပြုနေကြခြင်း" ဆိုတဲ့ အတွေးအခေါ်တွေလိုပါပဲ။

အဲဒါကြောင့် နောက်တက်လာကြမယ့် ခေါင်းဆောင်သစ်တွေက အာဏာရအောင် ကြိုးစားကြမှာလား၊ မကြိုးစားကြဘူးလား မေးရမှာ မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ သူတို့လဲ အာဏာရှာကြတာပါပဲလားဆိုပြီး စိတ်ပျက်ကြရမှာမဟုတ်ဘဲ (ဘာလို့ဆို အာဏာလက်ထဲရောက်အောင် သူတို့ ရှာကြမှာပဲ)၊ အဓိက မေးကြရမှာက အဲ့ဒီအာဏာရှာလိုစိတ်ကို ဖျက်ဆီးတဲ့ဘက်မရောက်ဘဲ အကျိုးဖြစ်ထွန်းတဲ့ဘက်ကို ရောက်အောင် ဘယ်လိုစနစ်တွေ တည်ဆောက်မလဲ ဆိုတာပဲ။

အာဏာက ရေလိုပဲဆိုတဲ့ ဥပမာပြခဲ့ပေမယ့်၊ လူ့သမိုင်းမှာက ဒီရေလို စီးဆင်းတဲ့ သဘာဝတရားတွေကို ဒီအတိုင်း လက်ခံခဲ့တာမဟုတ်ဘူး။ ရေကို ထိန်းကျောင်း၊ လမ်းလွှဲပြီး လိုအပ်သလို အကျိုးရှိရှိ အသုံးချခဲ့ကြပါတယ်။ ရေက နိမ့်ရာကိုစီးတာမှန်ပေမဲ့၊ ကျွန်တော်တို့က ဆည်တွေဆောက်ပြီး လျှပ်စစ်ထုတ်တယ်၊ တူးမြောင်းတွေဖောက်ပြီး မိုးခေါင်တဲ့မြေတွေကို စိမ်းလန်းစေနိုင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

ဒီသဘောအတိုင်းပါပဲ၊ အာဏာရဲ့ စုစည်းလိုတဲ့ သဘာဝကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ အတန်အသင့်တော့ ထိန်းကျောင်းနိုင်ပါလိမ့်မယ်။ ဒီထိန်းကျောင်းမှုက တစ်ကြိမ်တည်းနဲ့ပြီးသွားတဲ့ တော်လှန်ရေးမျိုးမဟုတ်ပါဘူး။ တော်လှန်ရေးတိုင်းမှာ လူတော်တော်တော်များများက တော်လှန်ရေးပြီးရင်ပြီးပြီလို့ ထင်တတ်ကြတယ်။ တကယ်တော့ ဒီလုပ်ငန်းက စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် ပြုပြင်ထိန်းသိမ်းနေရတဲ့ အင်ဂျင်နီယာပညာရပ်တစ်ခုလိုပါပဲ။

အဲဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်တော်တို့ ကမ္ဘာကြီးမှာ ဗဟိုချုပ်ကိုင်မှုမရှိတဲ့ စနစ်တွေတည်ဆောက်နေတဲ့ opensource developer တွေ၊ အာဏာကို စောင့်ကြည့်နေတဲ့ သတင်းသမားတွေ၊ ဒစ်ဂျစ်တယ်အခွင့်အရေးအတွက် တိုက်ပွဲဝင်နေတဲ့ တက်ကြွလှုပ်ရှားသူတွေနဲ့ ပွင့်လင်းမှုကိုတောင်းဆိုတဲ့ သာမန်ပြည်သူတွေ လိုအပ်ပါတယ်။

အာဏာသံသရာဆိုတာ ကံဆိုးလို့ကြုံကြရတဲ့ ကံကြမ္မာမဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ သဘာဝရဲ့ ဆွဲငင်အားလို အမြဲရှိနေမယ့် စွမ်းအားတစ်ခုအဖြစ် အရှိတရားအတိုင်းရှုမြင်နိုင်မယ်ဆိုရင်၊ အဲဒီဆွဲငင်အားကို အကျိုးရှိတဲ့ဘက်ရောက်အောင်၊ တစ်နေရာတည်းမှာ စုပြုံမသွားအောင် စနစ်တွေ၊ ဖွဲ့စည်းပုံတွေကို စဉ်ဆက်မပြတ် တည်ဆောက်လာနိုင်မှာပါ။

“အားလုံးက အာဏာရှင်တွေပါကွာ” ဆိုပြီး မျှော်လင့်ချက်မဲ့ အရှုံးပေးလိုက်ကြဖို့မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ ထာဝရနိုးကြားမှုနဲ့ ထိန်းကျောင်းနိုင်ဖို့အတွက် ကြိုတင်ပြင်ဆင် တည်ဆောက်နေဖို့ပဲ ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။

အာဏာရှင်အိုကြီးတွေ သေမယ့်ရက်၊ (ဘယ်လိုတော်လှန်ရေးမဆို) တော်လှန်ရေးအောင်မြင်ခဲ့ရင် နိုင်ငံရေးအပြောင်းအလဲကို ယူဆောင်လာနိုင်မယ်၊ ကမ္ဘာသစ်ပေါ်လာမယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်ပြီး ထိုင်စောင့်နေတာက အန္တရာယ်များတဲ့ ဖြေသိမ့်မှုတစ်ခုပါ။ “ကယ်တင်ရှင်မျိုးဆက်သစ် ရောက်လာတော့မယ်" ဆိုတဲ့ ဒီအတွေးက ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို ပျင်းရိစေပြီး ခိုင်မာတဲ့စနစ်တွေ တည်ဆောက်ဖို့ မေ့နေစေတတ်ပါတယ်။

အာဏာဆိုတာက တစ်ဦးတစ်ယောက် သေတာနဲ့အတူ ပျောက်မသွားပါဘူး၊ တခြားတစ်ယောက်ဆီ ကူးပြောင်းသွားတာကို ယေဘူယျ လက်ခံကြမယ်ထင်ပါတယ်။ အာဏာရှင် အသစ်တွေက မင်းအောင်လှိုင်တို့၊ ပူတင်တို့၊ ရှီကျင့်ဖျင်တို့လို ပုံစံမျိုးနဲ့ လာမှာမဟုတ်ဘဲ တီထွင်ဖန်တီးရှင်ကြီးတွေ၊ ဆန်းသစ်မှုရဲ့ ချန်ပီယံတွေ၊ ဘေးကင်းလုံခြုံရေးအတွက် စကားပြောသူတွေလို ပုံစံမျိုးနဲ့ လာလိမ့်မယ်။ သူတို့က ကာကွယ်စောင့်ရှောက်မှု၊ ထိရောက်မှု၊ အကောင်းဆုံးဖြစ်အောင်လုပ်မှုဆိုတဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေကိုသုံးပြီး အာဏာရှင်အိုကြီးတွေ အိပ်မက်တောင် မမက်ဖူးတဲ့ ထိန်းချုပ်မှုစနစ်တွေကို တည်ဆောက်သွားကြပါလိမ့်မယ်။

AI က code တွေ ထုတ်ပေးလိုက်တာ မြန်ပေမယ့်၊ developer တွေအနေနဲ့ အဲ့ဒီ code တွေ ဘယ်လိုအလုပ်လုပ်လဲဆိုတာ နက်နက်နဲနဲ နားမလည်ဘဲ ကောက်သုံးမိနိုင်တယ်။ ဒါဆို ရေရှည်မှာ ကိုယ့်ရဲ့ ပြဿနာဖြေရှင်းနိုင်တဲ့ စွမ်းရည်နဲ့ error ရှာဖွေနိုင်တဲ့ စွမ်းရည်တွေ ကျသွားနိုင်တာပေါ့။ အရင်လို Stack Overflow မှာ မေးခဲ့ကြပြီး ကူးခဲ့ကြတဲ့ ခေတ်မှာတောင်မှ ကိုယ်ကူးတဲ့ code ရဲ့ နောက်ကွယ်က အလုပ်လုပ်ပုံကို နားလည်ဖို့က အရေးကြီးနေတုန်းပဲလေ။

AI ထုတ်ပေးတဲ့ code တွေက အမြဲတမ်း 100% အမှားကင်းတယ်လို့ မဆိုနိုင်ပါဘူး။ အဓိကကတော့ ခြုံရေးပြဿနာတွေဖြစ်နိုင်ပါတယ်။ အဲဒါကြောင့် AI ထုတ်ပေးတဲ့ code တွေကို သေချာပြန်စစ်ဆေးပြီး စမ်းသပ်ဖို့လိုအပ်နေတုန်းပဲ။ တစ်ချို့ကြတော့လဲ အခြေခံတွေကို နားမလည်တဲ့အခါမှာ၊ AI ကြောင့် အချိန်ကုန်သက်သာရာကနေ အချိန်ထပ်ကုန်သွားစေနိုင်တဲ့ အခြေအနေမျိုးတွေကြုံနေကြရတာကိုလဲ မြင်ဖူးကြမှာပါ။

နောက်တစ်ချက်ကတော့ AI က နည်းပညာပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ အကြောင်းအရာတွေကို နားလည်ပေမယ့်၊ လုပ်ငန်းရဲ့ အဓိကကျတဲ့ စီးပွားရေးဆိုင်ရာ လိုအပ်ချက်တွေ (business logic)၊ team ထဲက လူတွေကြားက ပေါင်းစည်းမှုတွေ၊ ဒါမှမဟုတ် တခြား မပြောပြရသေးတဲ့ လိုအပ်ချက်တွေကိုကျတော့ နားလည်ဖို့ ခက်ခဲနေပါသေးတယ်။

ပြောရရင် AI က အရင်က ကျွန်တော်တို့ လက်နဲ့လုပ်ရတဲ့ (ဒါမှမဟုတ် copy/paste လုပ်ရတဲ့) ရှာဖွေတာ၊ ရွေးချယ်တာ၊ ပြန်ပြင်တာလိုမျိုး စဉ်းစားတွေးခေါ်ရတဲ့ အဆင့်တွေကို automate လုပ်ပေးနိုင်ပြီဆိုပေမဲ့

လူတွေကတော့ အမြဲလိုနေဦးမှာပါပဲ

ဆော့ဖ်ဝဲလ် architect အတွေ့အကြုံရှိတဲ့လူတစ်ယောက်က microservices တွေရဲ့ ကောင်းကျိုး၊ ဆိုးကျိုးတွေကို စဉ်းစားနေတယ်ဆိုပါစို့။

"ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ Kubernetes setup အတွက် observability နဲ့ low overhead ကို ချိန်ညှိပေးနိုင်မယ့် service mesh strategy တစ်ခု အကြံပြုပါဦး။" ဆိုတာမျိုးမေးမယ်။

AI ကတော့ Istio နဲ့ Linkerd architecture တွေကို diagram တွေ၊ YAML example တွေ၊ ကုန်ကျစရိတ်နှိုင်းယှဉ်ချက်တွေနဲ့အတူတူ အကြံပြုပေးလိမ့်မယ်။ ဒါပေမယ့် ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်ကိုတော့ ဆော့ဖ်ဝဲလ် architect ကိုယ်တိုင်ကချရမှာပါပဲ။ AI က ပိုမြန်ပြီး ပိုကျယ်ပြန့်တဲ့ ခွဲခြမ်းစိတ်ဖြာမှုတွေကို ဖြစ်နိုင်အောင်လုပ်ပေးနိုင်ပေမယ့်၊ Architecture level မှာ ဘာကမှန်တယ်၊ ဘာကထိရောက်တယ်ဆိုတာကို နောက်ဆုံးအဆင့်ရွေးချယ်ရမှာကတော့ လူတွေပါပဲ။

ဒီသဘောအရ AI ဆိုတာ အရင်က ကျွန်တော်တို့သုံးနေကျ "boilerplate code + library + forum" workflow ရဲ့ ပိုပြီး အစွမ်းထက်တဲ့ တိုးတက်ပြောင်းလဲမှုတစ်ခုပဲလို့ ပြောလို့ရတယ်။ အလုပ်ရှုပ်သက်သာစေတယ်၊ iteration time တွေနည်းသွားစေတယ်၊ ဒါပေမဲ့ ကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ software design တစ်ခုရဲ့ အခြေခံဖြစ်တဲ့ တီထွင်ဖန်တီးနိုင်စွမ်းနဲ့ ဝေဖန်ပိုင်းခြားစိတ်ဖြာတွေးခေါ်နိုင်စွမ်းကိုတော့ သူက အစားမထိုးနိုင်ပါဘူး။

မကြာခင်မှာ AI assistant တွေက ကိုယ့် team ရဲ့ Slack thread တွေ၊ server log တွေ၊ on-call alert တွေ၊ git log တွေကနေ ဒီထက်ပိုပြီးသင်ယူနိုင်လာမယ်။ tech debt တွေ စုပုံနေပြီး၊ ပြဿနာတွေ အရမ်းမတက်ခင်မှာ refactoring လိုအပ်ချက်တွေကို ကြိုတင်ခန့်မှန်းနိုင်လာမယ်။ အဲဒီလိုလုပ်ပေးရင်းနဲ့ Developer တွေက ရှာတာ၊ ကူးတာ၊ ပြင်တာ အတွက် အချိန်နည်းနည်းပဲသုံး၊ ဒီဇိုင်းလုပ်တာ၊ architecture ရေးဆွဲတာ၊ တီထွင်တာအတွက် အချိန်ပိုသုံးလာနိုင်တာပေါ့။

နောက်ဆုံးအနေနဲ့ပြောရရင်တော့ development မှာ AI ကို သုံးလာတာက အရင်ကတည်းက ရှိပြီးသား အသိပညာကို ပြန်သုံးတဲ့ အခြေခံသဘောတရားကို ပြောင်းလဲသွားစေတာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

အရင်က အဆင့်ဆင့်လုပ်ရတဲ့ ရှာတာ၊ ကူးတာ၊ ပြင်တာတွေကို ပိုမြန်ပြီး ပိုပြီးတော့ အကြောင်းအရာနဲ့ ဆီလျော်တဲ့ context-aware interface တစ်ခုတည်းမှာ ပေါင်းစပ်ပြီး ပြောင်းလဲပေးလိုက်တာပါ။ ကျွန်တော်တို့ အရင်ကတည်းက လုပ်နေကျ အရာတွေကို ပိုပြီး အားကောင်းသွားအောင် ချဲ့ထွင်လိုက်တာမျိုးပဲ။ ရှိပြီးသားအလုပ်တွေပေါ်မှာအခြေခံပြီး အသစ်တွေ ဖန်တီးတည်ဆောက်တာပါပဲ။

AI က ဆော့ဖ်ဝဲလ်ရေးတာကို ပိုမြန်စေ၊ ပိုအဆင်ပြေစေပေမယ့်၊ လူတွေရဲ့ စဉ်းစားတွေးခေါ်နိုင်စွမ်း၊ တီထွင်ဖန်တီးနိုင်စွမ်းနဲ့ အရေးကြီးတဲ့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်တွေချနိုင်စွမ်းတွေကိုတော့ အစားထိုးနိုင်မှာမဟုတ်ပါဘူး။ တကယ်တော့ AI က လူတွေရဲ့ ဒီအရည်အချင်းတွေကို ပိုကောင်းအောင်၊ ပိုတိုးတက်အောင် ကူညီပေးမယ့် လက်ထောက်ကောင်းတစ်ယောက်ပါ။ ဒါကြောင့် သူ့ကို အရမ်းအားကိုးလွန်ပြီး ကိုယ့်ရဲ့ အဓိက အရည်အချင်းတွေ ပျောက်မသွားအောင်တော့ သတိထားရမှာပါပဲ။

တစ်နှစ်လောက်ကြာပြီဆိုတော့ အဖြစ်အပျက်အခြေအနေတွေကတော့ အများကြီးပါပဲ။ မထင်မှတ်ထားဘဲ အဆင်ပြေသွားတာလေးတွေ ရှိသလို၊ သင်ခန်းစာရလိုက်တာတွေ၊ လမ်းကြောင်းအသစ်တွေ ပြောင်းလိုက်ရတာတွေလည်း ရှိပါတယ်။

ဒီ developer mentorship အစီအစဉ်ကို စတုန်းကတော့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ကရှင်းရှင်းလေးပါ။ မြန်မာပြည်က အတွေ့အကြုံနုတဲ့ developer ညီငယ်၊ ညီမငယ်တွေ တကယ့် software product တွေမှာ အတူတူလက်တွဲလုပ်ရင်း လက်တွေ့အတွေ့အကြုံရစေချင်တာ။ လူအများသုံးနိုင်မယ့် tools တွေ apps တွေ အများကြီး ထုတ်နိုင်မယ်လို့ မှန်းခဲ့တာပေါ့။ တကယ်တမ်း အဲ့ဒီလို အောင်အောင်မြင်မြင်ဖြစ်ဖို့ကတော်တော်လေး ခက်ခဲမယ်မှန်းတော့ သိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

အစီအစဉ်တစ်ဝက်လောက်မှာတော့ ကိုယ်ရေးကိုယ်တာကိစ္စတွေနဲ့ ကျွန်တော့်ဘက်က အချိန်သိပ်မပေးနိုင်တာတွေရော၊ ပါဝင်တဲ့သူတွေထဲက တော်တော်များများကလည်း ကျောင်းကိစ္စတွေ၊ တခြားအလုပ်တွေနဲ့ မအားကြတော့ဘူးပေါ့လေ။ ဆိုတော့ ကျွန်တော်မျှော်လင့်ထားသလိုမျိုး အရှိန်တစ်ခုနဲ့ ဆက်တိုက်မလုပ်နိုင်ခဲ့ဘူးပေါ့။

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ အဲ့ဒီအစီအစဉ် ထဲက စီမံကိန်းတစ်ခုကတော့ တကယ့်ကို အပြင်လောကထဲ ရောက်သွားပြီး တိတ်တိတ်လေးနဲ့ အကြီးအကျယ် အောင်မြင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ အသေးစိတ်တော့ ကျွန်တော် ဒီနေရာမှာ ပြောပြလို့မရပေမယ့်၊ မြန်မာပြည်တွင်းက ကြိုးစားနေတဲ့သူတွေကို ထောက်ပံ့ပေးနေတဲ့ solution တစ်ခုလို့ပဲ ဆိုပါတော့။ လစဉ် အမေရိကန်ဒေါ်လာ ငါးသိန်းလောက် ဝင်ငွေရှိနေတာ ၅ လလောက်ရှိနေပါပြီ။ ဒီလိုမျိုး အဆင်ပြေပြေ အောင်မြင်ကြီးထွားလာတာကို မြင်ရတာကတော့ တကယ်မထင်မှတ်ထားသလို၊ အရမ်းလည်း အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိတယ်လို့ ခံစားရပါတယ်။

အမှန်အတိုင်းပြောရရင် အစတုန်းက ဒီစီမံကိန်းကို မစခင်က နည်းနည်းတွန့်ဆုတ်နေခဲ့သေးတယ်။ လူတွေဘယ်လိုမြင်မလဲပေါ့။ တချို့က "volunteer ခေါ်ပြီး ခေါင်းပုံဖြတ်နေတာ" တို့ဘာတို့ လှောင်ကြတာမျိုးတောင်ရှိခဲ့ပါသေးတယ်။ ဒါပေမဲ့ သူတို့ ပြောတာကို ဂရုမစိုက်နေဘဲရှေ့ဆက်လုပ်ဖြစ်ခဲ့တာကိုတော့ တကယ်ဝမ်းသာမိတယ်။

နောက်ထပ်ကောင်းတဲ့ ရလာဒ်တစ်ခုကတော့ ဒီအစီအစဉ် မှာ ပါဝင်ခဲ့တဲ့ ၃၁ ယောက်ထဲကနေပြီး ၇ ယောက်ကို ကျွန်တော့်ကုမ္ပဏီမှာ ပြန်ခန့်ဖြစ်နိုင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ ကျွန်တော့်ကို ခေါင်းပုံဖြတ်ဖို့ ကြိုးစားနေတာလို့ ခနဲ့ခဲ့ကြတဲ့သူတွေကိုယ်တိုင်ကတော့ အချိန်တိုအတွင်းမှာ ဒီလိုမျိုး အလုပ်အကိုင်ဖန်တီးပေးဖို့ မဖြစ်နိုင်တာအသေအချာပါပဲ။

ကျွန်တော်မျှော်လင့်ခဲ့သလို product အမိုက်စားတွေ အများကြီး မထုတ်နိုင်ခဲ့ရင်တောင်၊ ကျွန်တော်နဲ့ ဒီ junior developer တွေကြားထဲမှာ ယုံကြည်မှုတွေ၊ တိုးတက်မှုတွေနဲ့ ရေရှည်ဆက်ဆံရေးတစ်ခုကို တည်ဆောက်နိုင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ ပြီးတော့ တကယ် impact ရှိတဲ့ product တစ်ခုလည်း ထွက်လာခဲ့တာပေါ့။

တကယ့် product တွေ ဖန်တီးရတာ ခက်တယ်ဆိုတာတော့ လက်ခံရမှာပါပဲ။ ဒါပေမဲ့ လူငယ်တွေအတွက် ဒီလိုမျိုး အခွင့်အလန်းတွေ ဖန်တီးပေးရတာကိုတော့ ကျွန်တော် ဆက်လုပ်ချင်ပါသေးတယ်။ ဒီအစီအစဉ်ရဲ့ ဒုတိယ version ကို ထပ်လုပ်ဖို့တော့စိတ်ကူးရှိပါတယ်။ ဒီတစ်ခေါက်တော့ အရင်ကရခဲ့တဲ့ သင်ခန်းစာတွေနဲ့၊ ပိုပြီး လက်တွေ့ကျကျ ချဉ်းကပ်သွားမှာပါ။ အရင်က တစ်ယောက်ထဲ စီစဉ်ခဲ့တဲ့အစား၊ ကူညီပေးနိုင်မယ့်အခြားသူတွေနဲ့ ပူးပေါင်းတာမျိုးတွေပေါ့။ ဒီအစီအစဉ်ကို ဘယ်လိုပိုကောင်းအောင်လုပ်လို့ရမလဲဆိုတဲ့ တခြား idea ကောင်းကောင်းလေးတွေ၊ feedback လေးတွေရှိရင်လည်း ကျွန်တော့်ကို ပြောပြပေးခဲ့လို့ရပါတယ်။

ဒုတိယစီမံကိန်းဖြစ်တဲ့ အရည်အသွေးမြင့်၊ ဘာသာပြန်ဒေတာစုတည်ဆောက်ရေးကတော့ အခုထိ အသက်ဝင်နေတုန်းပါပဲ။ လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ၁၁ လအတွင်းမှာ လူနည်းပေမဲ့ စိတ်ရောကိုယ်ပါနှစ်ပြီး ကူညီပေးခဲ့ကြတဲ့ collaborator တွေကျေးဇူးနဲ့ တော်တော်အဆင်ပြေတဲ့ ဒေတာစုတစ်ခုအဖြစ် အကောင်အထည်ပေါ်လာနေပါတယ်။

ဒါပေမဲ့၊ ကြားထဲမှာလဲသိတဲ့အတိုင်း AI လောကက တိုးတက်တာ အရမ်းကိုမြန်လွန်းတယ်။

အခုနောက်ပိုင်း LLM တွေ၊ အထူးသဖြင့် မြန်မာစာပါတဲ့ LLM တွေရဲ့ machine-generated translation အရည်အသွေးက သာမန်စကားပြောတွေမှာတောင် တော်တော်လေး ကောင်းလာပြီ။ တချို့ proprietary system တွေဆို မြန်မာ-အင်္ဂလိပ် နှစ်မျိုးလုံးမှာ အံ့သြစရာကောင်းလောက်အောင် ကောင်းနေတာတွေ့ရတယ်။

အဲ့ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်တော် မကြာခဏ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ်ပြန်မေးဖြစ်နေတဲ့ မေးခွန်းကတော့ "ဒါဆို ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ ဒေတာစု က အသုံးဝင်ဦးမှာလား" ဆိုတာပါပဲ။

အဲဒီမေးခွန်းအတွက် လောလောဆယ် ကျွန်တော့်ရဲ့အဖြေကတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ ဒေတာစုက open source ဖြစ်မယ်၊ အလွယ်တကူရယူသုံးစွဲနိုင်တဲ့ လူတွေကိုယ်တိုင် ဘာသာပြန်ထားတာဖြစ်မယ်ဆိုတာက ထူးခြားချက်အဖြစ်နဲ့ အသုံးဝင်နိုင်ဦးမယ်လို့ ယုံကြည်ပါတယ်။ စွမ်းဆောင်ရည်မြင့်တဲ့ model အများစုက propriatary တွေဖြစ်နေတယ်၊ ဒါမှမဟုတ် open source model တွေကကြတော့လဲ ဒေတာမလုံလောက်တာကြောင့် အရည်အသွေးက ထင်သလောက်မကောင်းနေဘူးဆိုတဲ့ ပြဿနာကတော့ ရှိနေတုန်းပဲဖြစ်လို့ပါ။ ကျွန်တော်တို့အနေနဲ့ လူကိုယ်တိုင်ဘာသာပြန်ပြီး၊ လူကိုယ်တိုင် ပြန်စစ်ဆေးထားတဲ့ တကယ့် သဘာဝကျကျ မြန်မာစကားပြောတွေကို အခြေခံထားတဲ့ ဒေတာစုတစ်ခုအနေနဲ့ ထွက်လာနိုင်ဖို့ ဆက်ကြိုးစားသွားပါမယ်။ ဒါက မြန်မာ NLP လောကမှာတော့ အခုထိ ရှားပါးနေတုန်းဖြစ်ပြီး၊ အမြန်ဆုံးထွက်လာနိုင်ဖို့လဲ အရေးကြီးလို့ပါပဲ။

လတ်တလောမှာတော့ ကျွန်တော်တစ်ယောက်တည်းပဲ ဒီဒေတာစုကို နောက်ပေါ် model တွေနဲ့ ဘယ်လိုယှဉ်နိုင်မလဲ၊ ဘယ်လို ပိုအသုံးဝင်အောင် လုပ်ရမလဲဆိုတာတွေကို evaluate လုပ်နေပါတယ်။ တစ်ယောက်ထဲလုပ်နေတာမလို့ နည်းနည်းတော့ နှေးတယ်ပေါ့၊ ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီနှစ်ထဲမှာတော့ အရှိန်ပြန်တင်နိုင်ဖို့ မျှော်လင့်ထားပါတယ်။

မြန်မာစာနဲ့ပတ်သက်တာ တစ်ခုခုလုပ်နေပြီး၊ ဒါကို စိတ်ဝင်စားတယ်ဆိုရင်တော့ ဆက်သွယ်ပေးပါ။ ကျွန်တော်တို့ အတူတူပူးပေါင်းလုပ်ဖို့အတွက်လိုအပ်ပါတယ်။

ဒီစီမံကိန်း နှစ်ခုကတော့ စစချင်းစိတ်ကူးထားသလို တစ်ထပ်တည်းတော့ ဖြစ်မလာခဲ့ပါဘူး။ ဒါပေမဲ့ ဖြစ်လာတဲ့အခြေအနေလေးတွေအတွက်၊ ရလာတဲ့ရလဒ်လေးတွေအတွက် ပူးပေါင်းပါဝင်ခဲ့ကြတဲ့သူတွေ၊ စိတ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာနဲ့ အစစအရာရာ ထောက်ပံ့ပေးခဲ့ကြတဲ့သူတွေ၊ ဝေဖန်ထောက်ပြခဲ့သူတွေ အားပေးခဲ့သူတွေ အားလုံးကို ကျေးဇူးအများကြီးတင်ပါတယ်ဗျာ။

နောက်တစ်ဆင့်ကတော့ ဒီသင်ခန်းစာတွေပေါ်မူတည်ပြီး လိုတိုးပိုလျှော့ လုပ်ရမှာပေါ့၊ ဘာတွေအလုပ်ဖြစ်ခဲ့လဲ၊ ဘာတွေအလုပ်မဖြစ်ခဲ့ဘူးလဲဆိုတာတွေကို ပြန်သုံးသပ်ပြီး ရှေ့ဆက်ရမှာပါ။

As someone who has walked the path of being a developer in the golden days, I feel a strong responsibility to help the next generation of Myanmar's tech talent. I know from my own experience how important practical experience is for a new developer. It's the bridge between theoretical knowledge and real-world problem-solving.

That's why I'm starting a community initiative to provide junior developers in Myanmar with the opportunity to work on real, impactful projects. Working together with other developers to build something real. Not just studying but learning by doing. This is how you really grow your skills in areas like teamwork and managing projects, not just writing code.

My Role: Supervisor and Mentor

I will supervise these projects, giving guidance and also coding together with you. I want to share what I have learned to help you grow.

To be clear, this is not an internship or a way to get free work from you. It's a collaboration where we all learn and grow together. You will work on real, meaningful projects, but you participate voluntarily to build your skills and portfolio.

Our Community Policies

1. Licensing Model: Each project will choose an open source, proprietary, or hybrid licensing model depending on its goals. This will be clearly communicated upfront.

2. Recognition of Individual Contributions: Every developer will be credited for their specific contributions.

3. Collective Project Ownership: Projects will be owned collectively by the community or a neutral entity, not by any individual or external company.

4. Equity for Major Contributors: If a project becomes a commercial project, major contributors may receive an ownership stake according to predefined agreements.

5. No IP Transfers: Contributors will never be asked to transfer their work to any other company.

6. Voluntary Participation: Contributions are voluntary and unpaid. The focus is on learning and growth, not financial compensation.

7. Transparency in Decision-Making: All major project decisions will be made openly as a community.

If you've ever tried rendering Burmese text using Python's PIL (Pillow) library, you might have encountered frustrating rendering errors. Characters might appear in the wrong order or not combine correctly, resulting in unreadable text. This common issue arises because Burmese text requires complex text layout support that standard PIL does not provide out of the box.

For those who have been working with Burmese text for some time, there is already a known solution. Since major Burmese unicode problems have been resolved, people started forgetting that these kind of things are not supported out of the box by standard libraries or programs. I also noticed that junior developers get frustrated with this kind of things these days. Hence, I am sharing this simple solution of building PIL with RAQM support.

The Problem with Rendering Burmese Text

Burmese script is a complex scripts. It involves characters that needs to be combined and positioned correctly to form readable text. Standard text rendering without proper shaping support leads to broken and incorrectly ordered characters. For example: even though it is written correctly in above image, "မင်္ဂလာပါ မြန်မာစာ" appear as separate, disjointed components with wrong order.

In the example above: “ဟေး” in the first sentence might seem correct “visually” but it is not. It was deliberately written as "ေဟး" where "ေ" (Burmese vowel sign e) is written first to make it visually correct. This workaround was commonly used for words with “ေ” by developers before correct rendering support was available. The second instance shows the correct writing format where "ေ" follows the consonant "ဟ". PIL cannot render this correctly with standard library.

Checking RAQM Support in PIL

First, check if your PIL version supports correct rendering of Burmese text by running:

python -m PIL | grep RAQM

If you get *** RAQM (Bidirectional Text) support not installed, you will need to follow the installation instructions below.

Setting Up Libraqm on macOS

libraqm addresses these rendering issues by providing complex text layout support. It integrates:

• Bidirectional text support using FriBiDi

• Shaping using HarfBuzz

This means that libraqm can magically handle the complex rendering problem for Burmese text. Just by building PIL with libraqm will ensure characters are combined and ordered correctly.

Installing Dependencies

If you have used to write image manipulation codes, the following dependencies may already be installed:

brew install libjpeg libtiff little-cms2 openjpeg webp

As mentioned, libraqm integrates HarfBuzz and FriBiDi. We need to install them first:

brew install freetype harfbuzz fribidi

Once the dependencies are installed, download these two scripts from the Pillow source and run install_raqm_cmake.sh to install libraqm.

After installing the raqm , you can now install Pillow normally. Once installed, you can verify the installation again with:

python -m PIL | grep RAQM

You should see --- RAQM (Bidirectional Text) support ok, loaded 0.10.1.

Testing the Setup

Use the following code to test the rendering of Burmese text:

Fixing this issue can help with many tasks, such as programmatically generating images with Burmese text. While writing this article, I remember the time when we struggled with generating synthetic Burmese text data for an OCR project. We had to manually compile a hotfix of HarfBuzz from source code and use many other configurations just to get it right. Using libraqm significantly simplifies this process nowadays.

I hope this article will assist those starting with Burmese language projects and save some of the younger developers from unnecessary frustration.

မေးခွန်းတွေပိုများလာအောင် လုပ်တဲ့အခါမှာ၊ မေးခွန်းတွေကို ကိုယ်တိုင်ပဲရေးရေး၊ တခြား အင်္ဂလိပ်စာ ဒေတာရင်းမြစ်တွေကနေပဲ ရွေးချယ်ရွေးချယ်၊ အချိန်နဲ့ လူအင်အားအရမ်းကုန်ပါလိမ့်မယ်။ အဲ့ဒီအတွက် ChatGPT ကို သုံးပြီး ကနဦးမေးခွန်းတွေကို အင်္ဂလိပ်လို အရင်ဖန်တီးတာက ပိုမြန်နိုင်ပါတယ်။ အဲဒီနောက်မှာတော့ ရလာတဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ်လို မေးခွန်းတွေကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ ကုမ္ပဏီကလုပ်ထားတဲ့ Echopod ကိုသုံးပြီးတော့ မြန်မာစာအဖြစ် ပြန်ထုတ်လုပ်ခိုင်းလို့ရပါတယ်။ နမူနာအနေနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်လုပ်ထားတာကိုတော့ ဒီ Google Sheets မှာ ကြည့်လို့ရပါတယ်။

နောက်တစ်ဆင့် ထပ်ပြီးလုပ်မယ်ဆိုရင်တော့ Google Apps Script ကိုသုံးပြီး၊ အဲဒီ sheet ထဲက approved ဖြစ်ပြီးသား မေးခွန်းတွေကို တစ်ခုချင်းစီ Facebook API သုံးပြီး post လုပ်လို့ရနိုင်ပါတယ်။ အပတ်စဉ် / နေ့စဉ် အချိန်တစ်ခုသတ်မှတ်ထားပြီး အဲဒီ script ကို သုံးနေရုံပါပဲ။
