As I sit on this hard church floor as the sermon rings through this rugged building, I write from my phone pondering on the word: ghetto. ( I should be listening to the speaker lol )

A word that you have probably used to describe one of the few:

1. a person - an action or speaking pattern

2. A location

3. An object - an article of clothing

My relationship with this word has always been a war inside of me because it seems as if one side is “ culture “ and the other is atrocity. Making the transition from the “ hood “ to the “ glorious gates “ of suburbia I had a bit of a culture shock. The things that were once normal and wildly accepted such as RnB music, black owned stores, soul food and overall community was not looked down upon or shunned.

We moved 45 minutes away. Away from the culture that maybe my parents deemed as unsafe - mirroring culture?

In 2008, when I moved it felt like another “ Great Migration “ - but it didn’t feel so great. Another version of the hood. 😐

uhh, return to sender?

The word ghetto now is associated with the Black community - it’s okay to admit it.

Remember there’s nothing new under the sun > go back to Venice in 1516.

It started with a walled island in a city’s center where Jewish residents were confined every night. The name originated from the old foundry that once stood there. No music or no struggle as art or culture to pull from it.

Four hundred years later, it crosses an ocean and lands on us. Ghetto moved from these Jewish residents to black communities that heavily influenced > redlining, restrictive covenants, banks, and city planners drew red lines around Black neighborhoods, deciding, on paper, that no one would lend, insure, or invest there. My grandparents’ generation didn’t choose the hood; it was zoned that way and then ( due to lack of resource and development) problems arose.

By the time sociologists began writing papers on “the ghetto” in the 1950s and ‘60s, a new shape started to form. Ghetto fell into academic field studies which looked like studying zip code, behavioral activities ( stereotypes ), publishing theories on the dysfunction without ever really questioning why the “ fences “ were built in the first place.

From Ghettos came innovation and ingenuity. Those same fences that were so perfectly crafted on paper made way for creativity that pushed past the ceiling that was set in place. You see it just as much as I do.

Baby Phat, Babyyy

Remember when I mentioned that fence from earlier well funny thing about a fence is that the second it’s not attached to the people who built it, it becomes a statement piece.

I’ve only seen Baby Phat a handful of times ( due to my familys’ Great Migration my access to the nicities of black culture was limited ). Ghetto Fabulous was the term that defined the period created by Andre Harrell, an executive, naming a shelf position. Louis Vuitton next to Timberlands.A new market segment that had a catchy name, but also became the word that got my mother and father eyeing a 45 minute and prompted my sister to sneak culture into the house.

Etruscans wore gold teeth three thousand years ago as a wealth flex = today we know them as .. grills. Then it resurfaces in hip-hop and instantly means the opposite > poverty, danger, don’t-hire-him. All that moved was who was looking and how safe they felt calling it low-class. Give it another twenty years and it’s on a runway in Paris and nobody’s calling it ghetto anymore, but they’re calling it “statement jewelry.”

Bonnets ran the same play. Ghetto in my grandmother’s kitchen at six a.m. and ghetto on the walk to the store. Now Kylie Jenner is wearing it on a magazine cover and now it’s high fashion.

Red, White and White

The truth is culture is leaning back conservative right now. The tones, the textures, the whole national mood screams red, white, and blue with a bald eagle tattooed on its forehead. The exact aesthetic that suburbia moved my family 45 minutes to get closer to. In that same climate, high fashion is biting into ghetto harder than it ever has. Dare I say Marc Jacobs ( the long nails never sat right with me - it felt performative).

Somebody told me a joke once: if you want to see where culture’s headed, just watch a Kardashian. I laughed when I heard it. What happened to the ass and long fingernails?! Because that’s the whole thin line right there, isn’t it > the line between adoption and rejection was never really a line to begin with. Culture rejects you out one side of its mouth and adopts your aesthetic out the other, it might be in the same sentence, and the only thing separating “ghetto” from “iconic” is whether the person wearing it is the kind of person the room already decided to forgive.

If you had one wish, what would it be?

Don’t answer that too fast. Tbh nobody answers that honestly without accidentally telling on themselves a little.

I think about the movie Obsession a lot, probably more than a well adjusted person should. Not because it’s about love or greed, whatever the poster’s trying to sell you. It’s about what happens when you get exactly what you asked for, excluding the edits.

Even further back: Aladdin, Timmy Turner, whichever cartoon let a kid snap their fingers and get whatever they wanted > I ABSOLUTELY used to envy that. It wasn’t necessarily about the wush, but it was the fact that they got to want something ugly and specific before anyone taught them to be embarrassed about it. By the time the wish actually means something, you’ve spent twenty years learning to launder what you want into something that sounds acceptable at a dinner party. Nobody wishes for “happiness” - that’s completely horsesh*t. That’s the answer you give when there’s a group of people around and you don’t want to get looked at funny.

I turn 28 in two days and if the wish I made last year had actually played out in full, I think I would’ve been f*cked.

Yeahhh.. Wish again, my boy

Here’s the list. Not requests. Demands, if I’m being honest, because a wish is just a demand you’re too much of a coward to say to an actual person, so you say it to the universe instead and let it take the blame.

• Millionaire, or close enough it doesn’t matter

• People chomping at the bit to work with me

• The baddest woman alive, obsessed, in my corner

• Did I mention millionaire > yeah, twice, on purpose, because that’s what wanting something looks like when nobody’s grading you on it

When I wished for these things, I wished for them in a moment of bravodo. A moment of feeling like the H.N.I.C.

In the midst of sitting on these wishes for the past year, I can proudly say I’M GLAD IT DIDN’T COME TRUE. I feel like God has a funny way of showing you what you really what through others. It’s the real life “ be careful what you wish for “ moment. Again, it’s slow and brutally painful, becuase ( at times ) you are in the midst of it.

Honestly, I think that’s worse. The movie at least gives you the mercy of speed > you get to watch yourself get destroyed in real time, which means some part of you can see it happening and go “oh, this is bad.” Slow doesn’t give you that courtesy. Slow just lets you keep telling people, including yourself, that you’re the same guy you were at 27, right up until you’re not, and there’s no scene, no soundtrack cue, no moment where the truth announces itself.

I don’t fully trust myself to know if it’s already started. That’s the actual problem, and it’s a genuinely annoying one — I can’t use my own judgment to check my own judgment. If I ask myself “am I still humble, still listening,” the version of me that’s quietly rotting would say the exact same sentence, same tone, and mean it just as much. Ego doesn’t announce itself with a costume change. It just starts answering your questions for you.

Oh Brother, This Guy Stinks

I don’t totally know what this costs yet, and I’m not going to pretend I’ve got it all figured out three days before my birthday, that would be its own kind of ego.

But I think it’s supposed to cost you the actual work .. the part where you stay bad at something in private, on purpose, long enough to get good at it, with nobody making you do it. it’s about the dedication + the unwavering discipline. Nobody claps for that part because no one wishes for that part either, which tells you something. Who in the hell wishes for more discipline? Come on now.

I’m not writing this like I’ve already lost it, or like I’ve already won some battle against it. I genuinely don’t know which one’s happening to me right now. That’s kind of the entire point of writing this three days out instead of three years from now, when I’d probably have a tidy answer for it and it’d already be too late to ask the question honestly.

Ask Me Again Next Year

I’m afraid of getting older ( most people are tbh ), but i don’t think this is what turning 28 actually is about. Not the fear of getting older. The fear of realizing how close you got to becoming someone you wouldn’t recognize, and not from some dramatic fall from grace. Just from being fed slowly, a little at a time, until you forgot what hungry used to feel like and started calling it “growth” instead.

I don’t have a clean ending for this. I wish I did > that’d be the easier version, wrap it up, say I’ve learned my lesson, say I know myself now. I don’t. The wish is still out there, still partially working, and I genuinely can’t tell if I’m the guy watching it happen or the guy it’s already happening to. Maybe there’s no difference. Maybe that’s the whole joke, and the joke’s on me, which, fine, at least it’s a good bit.

All I know is the kid with the notebook, no rolodex, nobody chomping at the bit for anything .. I can still hear him. Some days louder than others. I don’t know how long that lasts.

Nobody warns you that the scariest part of getting what you wanted isn’t the getting. It’s not knowing when you stopped noticing.

I turn 28 in two days > ask me again next year.

The fear of being average is just perfectionism in disguise. I wasn’t expecting a piece from this week to get at that so clearly, but it did. The point is simple. Not everything deserves your full effort. Pretending it does does not make you exceptional. It makes you scattered.

Your job is to have a strong opinion about everything. Type, color, copy, concept. Eventually, that way of thinking starts leaking into your personal life. Sometimes without you even noticing. Everything becomes a project. A hobby stops being a hobby and starts feeling like a portfolio piece before you have even had the chance to enjoy it. An interest becomes an identity test.

What the piece gets right is this. The real skill is being honest about what actually matters. What is a passion? What is just something you like? Those are not the same thing, and they do not ask for the same level of energy. Confuse them, and you end up doing both halfway.

You will be average at one thing so you can be great at another. That is not failure. It is just honesty about where your time and energy are meant to go.

The Room Takes Your Temperature Whether You Like It Or Not

The most underrated leadership skill is self knowledge. Damola Adamolekun runs Red Lobster with the kind of clarity that suggests he knows exactly who he is. He is transparent. Direct. Comfortable setting high goals. Comfortable, too, with the fact that he works a lot and does not feel the need to apologize for it. That is not a personality type. It is a decision, and most leaders never fully make it.

What stayed with me from the interview is how much of his thinking applies to creative leadership. You are always setting the tone. You are showing people what is acceptable, what is not, and how much ambition the room can actually hold. Culture is not something you announce once and expect people to absorb. It comes from what you model, repeatedly.

That is what his point really gets at. You cannot build a culture you have not already lived yourself. If you want honesty from your team, go first. If you want people to take creative risks, you should be the first one taking them. Otherwise, what you are asking for is performance, not trust.

He came up in private equity, where so much of the work is about analyzing decisions from a distance. Moving into an operator role asked something more personal. Not just what do you think, but who are you when the decisions are yours and people are watching. That question is not only for CEOs. It belongs to anyone leading a room.

A Thousand Small Decisions Pointing the Same Direction

Other phone companies are still trying to understand why their products look cheap. Apple solved that problem years ago and never really looked back. The squircle, that exact shape sitting somewhere between a square and a circle, is not just an aesthetic move. It is physiological. G2 continuity reflects the shape the human eye seems to accept most easily. Too sharp, and it feels aggressive. Too round, and it starts to read as soft or even a little unserious. Apple found the balance. Then they built an entire world out of it.

You see it everywhere. In the hardware. In the software. In the icons, the motion, the animation. It is one visual language carried across every surface, which is what makes the whole thing feel so resolved.

It is not any single decision that makes Apple’s design feel untouchable. It is the consistency of the system underneath every decision. The same principles. Applied again and again. No drift. No moment where the logic drops.

That is what most brands cannot copy. Not because they lack talent. Not because they lack money. They usually lack the discipline to set a rule and keep following it once the rule becomes inconvenient. Apple is not just doing one thing well. They are doing a thousand things in the same direction, all at once. That is bigger than design. It feels more like obsession with operational support behind it.

You Lost the Reader Three Sentences Ago

Nobody taught you to write badly. You just forgot the reader exists. Pinker has been making this point for decades, and somehow it still does not land the way it should.

The curse of knowledge is simple. Once you know something, you lose your feel for what it is like not to know it. So you stop explaining. You skip steps. You assume people are following. Most of the time, they are not.

This is not just an academic problem. Creative industries do it constantly. Briefs filled with jargon that nobody stops to question. Decks built to explain the concept to the people who already agree with it, instead of the client who does not. References that make perfect sense inside the building and absolutely nowhere else.

That is what makes the older examples so interesting. Darwin. Holmes. Edison. They were not writers by trade, at least not in the way we mean it now. They lived before jargon had become its own kind of armor, so when they described something, they had to describe the thing itself. A bunny. Not the stimulus. Something you can actually see.

Concrete language wins every time. Not because it sounds smarter. Because it is closer to the way people actually take things in. The job has not changed. What changed is that a lot of people stopped doing it, including plenty of people whose whole job is supposed to be communication.

Chalk is still packed into the creases of my hands ( post climbing session ), the sun is going down, and my mind has spent this week wandering into places it usually has the decency to avoid.

My father ran on the same architecture, minus the jazz and minus the excuse of greatness, so what remained was chaos, belittling, and control dressed up as standards. I know the difference now. I have done enough work to know the difference. But being formed by that kind of pressure, even the counterfeit kind, calibrates you. It sets the threshold for what effort feels like, what seriousness feels like, what attention feels like.

These aren’t coincidences. Every single one of these required someone to go somewhere they had no business being, find something nobody flagged for them, and have the audacity to recognize what they were holding before the world caught up. You know the Kanye line, “ 5 Beats a Day for 3 Summers “ > how do you think that happened? The samples didn’t pop up out of nowhere.

Yes, there’s a level of talent that needs to be had, but there’s also curiosity with no ceiling and no off switch. The kind that doesn’t separate work from obsession because it genuinely cannot tell the difference. That obsession that pulls a record from a bin at 2am, not because you know what it is, but because something in your chest won’t let you put it back. It’s the same one that sends Tarantino into obscure Japanese cinema, sends Basquiat into anatomy textbooks and jazz obituaries like they’re scripture + sends Virgil into a Goodwill with the same ferocity other designers reserve for Paris showrooms.

The crate wasn’t the destination. The hunger was the methodology.

And we’re medicating it.

Imma Sound like a Oldhead Right Quick

Spotify just built the opposite.

SongDNA maps every sample, every interpolation, every contributor behind any song you’ve ever loved. Labeled, organized and delivered before you had the chance to even wonder. Everything Dilla found in a basement in Detroit or No I.D. pulled from a gospel record nobody had touched in thirty years in one tab - directed immediately. By every measurable standard, a more efficient system.

Efficiency is exactly the problem.

You see > crate digging came from physical crates .. milk crates, plastic bins, cardboard boxes shoved into the back corners of used record shops and church basements that smelled like dust and somebody else’s entire life marked down to a dollar fifty. You literally got on your knees and you flipped. There was no algorithm or search bar to help you. Just you, a crate, and absolutely no guarantee of anything.

The education in that moment was uncertainty.

We don’t talk about the wrong records.The ones you would snatch and put it on the record to find that nothing “ good “ was on it. Every miss quietly calibrates something in you that couldn’t be calibrated any other way. It’s about your instincts being built in the dark, without feedback, without anyone telling you that you were getting warmer. My argument is that this process builds taste. What makes a good record? What draws me to a sound? What makes me want to find these textures in other records?

SongDNA gives you the answer. What it cannot give you is the question — that obsessive, directionless, ungovernable need to know where something came from and what else lives near it. The question was the only thing that was ever making artists out of listeners.

We just made it optional.

If You’re Lazy, Just Say That

Hot Take: Curiosity is not a personality trait. It is not something you either have or don’t, something you’re born with like a good ear or long fingers. It is a craft requirement. A prerequisite so fundamental that its absence doesn’t just limit the work > it exposes it. You can always tell when someone made something without ever being genuinely curious about what came before it. There’s no .. grittiness. The edges feel too “ rounded “ and perfect. Where’s the feel? The references are too obvious > it’s copy and paste with very limited interpolation .. ( see the need for the crate digging ).

Now, every discipline has a crate. Chefs dig through culinary traditions they weren’t trained in, pulling techniques from cultures that never made it into their curriculum. Architects study buildings they’ll never work in, in cities they’ve never visited, by designers history half forgot. Writers carry notebooks full of sentences that have nothing to do with anything they’re currently writing > until suddenly they do. The crate is wherever you go when nobody told you to go there. The craft represents hunger. That insatiuable hunger for the craft.

You can teach technique and structure with the theories around composition, theory, form. What you cannot teach is the compulsion to go deeper than the assignment requires > to pull the thread nobody asked you to pull. No one has to say to stay in the rabbit hole past the point of usefulness or to care about the answer to a question that has no immediate practical application. That compulsion is what separates the people who make things from the people who make work. And it has always been self taught, in the dark, through thousands of hours of wandering that looked, from the outside, like nothing at all.

SongDNA doesn’t know any of this. It was not built for the obsessive it is built for the average consumer — to give everyone the appearance of depth without requiring any of the descent. And the tragedy isn’t that it exists. The tragedy is that we needed it so badly. How completely we had already stopped going looking before Spotify built us a reason not to.

We’re losing recipes.

“Good. I’m glad he’s dead.” - The Orange Man

Somewhere, a man read that and nodded.

Not a supervillain nor some radicalised basement dweller, the algorithm finally surfaced. Just a regular man > he goes to work, has a fantasy football league, probably owns a grill, and who reads five words from the President of the United States and feels, in his chest, something that functions exactly like solidarity.

You probably know this man... judgmental side eye.

He’s the one in the group chat who goes ten percent further than everyone else, and nobody says anything because saying something would make it ”weird“. He’s the one who still talks about his ex like she committed a war crime by leaving or the one who performs toughness so consistently, so exhaustingly, that you’ve stopped being able to tell where the performance ends. He says things out loud that most people have the basic social architecture to keep internal, and when nobody pushes back, he takes the silence as a standing ovation.

You’ve watched this your entire life. We all have yet, the only thing that’s changed is that we elected one.

Robert Mueller was 81 years old. Marine + Purple Heart + 6 decades of public service. He died slowly, privately, with his family around him, the way Parkinson’s takes people > without drama, without an audience, without any apparent need to make it about himself. The President of the United States logged on within the hour. Signed his full title like some type of elevated rap beef as if he got the last laugh. Tupac and Biggie sh*t.

The most honest thing you can say about what followed is that nobody was actually surprised.

But Trump didn’t actually create this; he just ran the proof of concept at the highest possible resolution and won. Twice. Somewhere between the first election and the second, a very specific kind of man stopped hiding what he admired about that.

This is about those men.

Water is Wet: The Documentary

Louis Theroux went to find the manosphere and found exactly what he was looking for, which is the first sign that he didn’t find the whole thing.

I watched it on a random night and felt weird for two hours straight, which I think was the intended effect, except the weird feeling wasn’t quite disgust. It was something closer to morbid fascination > the specific intoxication of watching men detonate themselves in real time and waiting, with genuine curiosity, to see what they could possibly do next. What’s the next thing? How far does this actually go? There’s a reason people slow down at accidents and it’s not because they’re monsters, but it’s because chaos ( when it’s contained inside a screen ) has a pull that’s difficult to be honest about.

The men in that Manosphere Netflix documentary are easy to watch in the way that car accidents are easy to watch > with a horrified distance that lets you locate the problem safely outside of yourself. They say ugly things with complete confidence. They perform dominance for each other like it’s a contact sport with no referee. A complete circle jerk if you ask me. They talk about women the way certain men talk about countries they’ve never visited with this breezy, load bearing + disdain filled contempt that doesn’t require evidence because evidence was never the point. And Theroux sits across from them with that expression he has, asking reasonable questions that they answer unreasonably, and the whole thing has the texture of a nature documentary where the animals know they’re being filmed and perform harder because of it.

I can tell you it’s useful footage and it validated what anyone paying attention already knew ... that this is growing. It has structure now, which is what used to be ambient male dysfunction has found community, language, and a monetization strategy. The documentary couldn’t bring itself to say the thing that needed saying - I personally think it could’ve been pushed further.

Sir. You Cannot Afford This.

This isn’t about the woman who stopped responding or the 81 year old man who died with his family. Stay with me .. The President logged on to celebrate the death of a man > the target is almost incidental, a surface the behavior needs in order to exist, the way a fire needs a wall. What’s actually burning has nothing to do with the wall.

This is compensation in the literal, mechanical sense. The respect, the power, the basic sense of being a person whose presence in a room means something - whatever it was, it didn’t come, and rather than sit with that, which would require a level of honesty that the entire performance is specifically architected to avoid, they externalized it, made it someone else’s fault, made it loud, and called it strength. Defiance for defiance’s sake is the last move available to a man who has run out of other moves and needs you to believe he chose this.

Now here’s the part that the documentary didn’t say, that the think pieces don’t say, that the Twitter threads with the impressive engagement numbers have never once had the honesty to say clearly: this behavior has a cover charge, and almost none of the men doing it can afford what they’re running up.

I’m a man — a Black man, at that — which means I’ve watched this performance my entire life from a proximity that makes the view clarifying in ways that are not always comfortable. Trump posts good, I’m glad he’s dead and signs it with his full title because he has the most powerful office in the world functioning as a bouncer, converting his cruelty into eccentricity and his contempt into confidence while his aggression is masked as a personality trait. The men imitating him have none of that infrastructure, none of that insulation, none of that historical permission. The same behavior that reads as dominant in certain rooms reads as threatening in mine, the same audacity that gets one man a second term gets another man a very different kind of interaction with systems that have always been exquisitely calibrated to read Black male anger as danger and white male anger as a leadership quality.

The assh*le at the top built a system that rewards his particular brand of terrible and insulates him from the bill. Everyone else is just picking it up at the door.

I’m Just a Bill

Let’s be honest about what’s actually being lost, because it isn’t civility. Civility is a surface condition, unevenly distributed, mostly deployed as a synonym for “made me comfortable” by people who were already comfortable and would like to remain that way. What’s being lost is trust - one thing of many that most of us are looking for. A much more expensive thing to rebuild once it’s gone and nobody wants to admit it’s gone.

Trust is the load bearing wall of every functional thing humans have ever built together that isn’t held together by force or fear or the threat of consequence. Friendships or even institutions. The quiet, unglamorous, almost embarrassingly ordinary willingness to walk into a room full of people and assume, until proven otherwise, that they’re not already calculating how to use you. That assumption is what makes cooperation possible and it is being taken apart, stud by stud, by men who have genuinely, completely confused the demolition with freedom.

The boys watching are not stupid. That’s the thing. That’s the part that should keep you up.

They see the wins — the president, the little podcasts doing eight figures, the guy in the office who says whatever he wants and keeps getting promoted while everyone around him quietly absorbs the damage, goes home, and says nothing because saying something has never, in recorded history, made it better. They are running the math in real time. The rubric is saying, “ don’t give a f*ck “, “do what you want”, “squash anyone in your way“, “these are the tactics for success ( the job, the girl or life you want )“ — brother, do I have news for you .. that’s a pipe dream.

This performance requried loneliness. The relationships + the posture makes it impossible before they start, because of becoming a man that people learn to work around rather than with > not out of malice, just out of the reasonable self preservation of people who have stopped expecting anything different and quietly adjusted their lives to account for your presence as a hazard rather than a person.

That’s the cost and it’s not as dramatic as the Netflix documentary with a score and a runtime. Just a generation of men running up a debt they don’t know they’ve taken out yet, co signed by every system that held up the assh*le as the blueprint — without mentioning, not once, that the blueprint was drawn for someone else.

The president logged off. The documentary ended. The think pieces got their clicks.

The boys are still watching and they’re still doing the math wrong.

“I am Warhol. I am the number one most impactful artist of our generation. I am Shakespeare in the flesh.” — Kanye West, 2013.

Someone read that and thought it was a personality quiz.

Here is what is actually happening out there — and pay attention because it is both very simple and somehow getting worse: a generation of people with no discernible interior life has selected Kanye West as their operating system. Not the Kanye who spent three summers in the studio before anyone knew his name existed or the Kanye who could hear a two second sample and rebuild the entire architecture of a song around it. Nor the Kanye who was sitting in rooms with giants, taking notes, studying, hungry in the specific way that people are hungry before they have anything yet. No > they picked the other one. The one who walks into rooms like the room should be grateful. Standing on tables and yelling and whatnot while speaking in frequencies instead of actually coherent sentences. The artist who has decided that accountability is for people without vision and that audience confusion is just the price of genius.

They took the arrogance and left the albums on the floor.

And the truly spectacular part > the part that should embarrass them but doesn’t, because embarrassment requires a level of self-awareness they opted out of, is that they are not even doing it well. Kanye’s arrogance was always load bearing. Underneath it was College Dropout and underneath that it was Late Registration. It was a man who had genuinely, obsessively, almost pathologically earned the right to be difficult. The cosplayer has a mood board and a Spotify playlist and would like you to know he is very busy. He has the frequency dialed all the way up and nothing playing through the speakers.

This is not a Kanye problem. Kanye is just the most recent and most potent example of something far older — the moment a singular talent cracks something open in the culture and the frauds flood in to wear the wreckage like it was tailored for them. It has happened in every era, in every creative field, to every genius careless enough to be mimicable, but this time the frauds have social media. Which means they have audiences before they have work and platforms before they have a point of view. A following before anyone has had the chance ( or the nerve ) to ask what exactly they are following.

The Kanye Effect has nothing to do with genius. It never did. It is about what happens when people with nothing to say discover the loudest possible way to say it — and find out, to everyone’s misfortune, that the world will clap anyway.

All Falls Down (Except The Ego)

I am a Kanye fan through and through > probably still am in the ways that matter and refuse to leave quietly.

So understand that what I am about to say is not a takedown, but it is a diagnosis of something wayyy bigger > like most diagnoses, it is uncomfortable precisely because it is accurate.

Now, two things can be true. Kanye West is a genuine creative genius (the body of work is not up for debate; College Dropout alone buys him a seat at any table he wants), and he is also a deeply insecure man. Those two things did not cancel each other out. They coexisted, loudly and publicly, long enough for an entire generation to watch and draw the wrong conclusion. They saw the insecurity and, for some reason, called it confidence, saw the chaos and substituted it for vision.

What I just described is an infection, and it is spreading rapidly.

Here is the part nobody wants to say out loud: the cosplayers did not choose this template by accident. Game recognizes game = insecurity recognizes insecurity. Of every creative genius available to imitate ( and there are many, most of them quieter, most of them more instructive ) they chose the most publicly unraveling one. Why? Because again - Ye is an icon. That man has swag that easily makes his humanity dismissible. A man with insecturities just like any other man. Ye is saucy - he’s got swag, but my lord does he also have some issues.

There is a person right now with no craft underneath them, no body of work to point to, no real interior conviction about who they are — that is, quite frankly, using Kanye as their blueprint. No `. You don’t have to sit with the uncertainty of not knowing yet whether you are good. You just have to perform the frequency loudly enough that nobody thinks to check what’s playing underneath it.

You see it in founders who speak in manifestos and cannot tell you their monthly active users. You see it in artists who have the aesthetic perfected — the right follows with the right references and the right nonchalance . . . and sadly have not made anything worth remembering. You see it on every platform, in every creative field, in every room where someone is performing the having of a vision rather than actually having one. The Kanye cosplay has become its own genre, creating a plethora of career piranhas and its own thoroughly undocumented, deeply unearned way of moving through the world.

Let me be honest: genius is not transmissible. You cannot catch it from a tweet or absorb it through a mood board, or will it into existence by walking into rooms as you own them. But you know what is transmissible? That wound. It’s just dressed up, rebranded, and deployed as armor by people who recognized it because they were carrying the same one.

I don’t think Kanye ever really asked to be a blueprint for any of this. There is a video of him > young, bright eyed, almost embarrassingly earnest > sitting down and talking about his references - I think it was with Spike Jonze.

The cosplayers looked at everything he built and everything he broke and made their choice. They didn’t want the albums, but they unknowingly wanted the wound. Because the wound, unlike the albums, requires nothing to replicate.

Stronger Wasn't About You

Let’s be specific about what the standard actually is.

College Dropout. Late Registration. Graduation. 808s and Heartbreak > an album so sonically uncomfortable it shouldn’t have worked and worked anyway because the grief inside it was real. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Yeezus. The Life of Pablo. Ye. Jesus is King. Donda. Vultures 1 and 2. Eleven albums that did not sound like each other, did not sound like anything else, and did not arrive from a man who was performing the having of a vision. They arrived from someone in the studio at hours nobody romanticizes, making decisions nobody saw, failing at things nobody clapped for until the thing was undeniable.

That is the receipts > that is what the arrogance was built on. THAT is what the cosplayer looked at and decided was optional.

Confidence became the byproduct because it was never the foundation — this is what happens when a person spends enough time alone with their craft to stop performing certainty and actually have it. The cosplayer reversed the order and has spent every day since hoping nobody notices.

Some people won’t and the algorithm doesn’t care. The blank page at two in the morning with no audience to cheer is not glamorous because real work isn’t glamorous.

You cannot cosplay your way into that room. You can only earn it or you cannot.

They taught us this in the 80s > don’t talk to strangers, don’t get in the car, don’t trust the unfamiliar face. The whole campaign was built on the idea that danger looks different from you, that you’d be able to tell, that threat has the decency to announce itself before it gets comfortable.

Nobody mentioned the dream situation, though.

Ambition is the fine asf person you have absolutely no business talking to. YOU know the one > looks incredible, says all the right things, and has a track record that should have you running in the opposite direction but instead has you leaning in closer like that’s somehow going to help. Every reasonable friend you have is giving you the face.. you end up ignoring the fact.

THEY FINE AS HELL THO

You saw those red flags early, too. The small compromises that didn’t feel small until they were stacked six high. The performances for people who weren’t even paying attention. The just this once that moved in one day, learned the Wi-Fi password, and never left. You clocked every single one and kept going because what are you supposed to do when something has you like that > file a report? Tell somebody? Nobody who’s ever been this gone has made a rational decision about it.

Here’s what the campaign got wrong though — the danger was never the stranger, it was almost always someone already inside, already comfortable, already knowing where everything was. Already finishing your sentences.

Ambition does exactly that. Gets in, gets warm, learns your weak spots and which version of you is most likely to say yes, and then one day you look up and realize the person doing all this wanting and compromising and contorting for a dream that keeps moving is someone you’ve never formally met; not a stranger that forced their way in, but one you opened the door for, offered a drink to, and let stay because they were just that fine.

Still not leaving though. Obviously.

Here’s what challenged my perspective this week.

Why Good People Become Monsters (YouTube / Philip Zimbardo)

“The line between good and evil is not a fixed cell wall, but a fluid membrane.”

Philip Zimbardo’s The Lucifer Effect dismantles the “bad seed” myth, which is that tired narrative we cling to because it lets us believe evil is something other people are born with rather than something we’re all capable of under the right circumstances. Turns out, situational forces ( anonymity, dehumanization, blind obedience to authority, so on and so forth .. ) can turn a “good samaritan” into a monster in less than a week, which means the person you think you are is really just a provisional identity that evaporates the moment the environment changes.

Evil is a slippery slope starting with small, inconsequential transgressions > the kind of moral compromises that seem harmless in isolation but function as gateway drugs to increasingly horrific behavior. Add anonymity .. a soldier’s uniform, an internet handle and moral accountability evaporates like water on hot asphalt. The Milgram and Stanford studies aren’t history lessons we can safely file away as “that was then”; they’re mirrors showing that sixty-five percent of us will follow a “man in a lab coat” to the point of inflicting lethal harm on others, which is a polite way of saying most of us are one authority figure away from becoming the villain in someone else’s story.

The uncomfortable recognition: Resistance requires vigilance, which means you have to question authority the moment it asks you to ignore your conscience, because once the situation takes over, the “you” you think you know disappears entirely, replaced by whatever the system needs you to be.

Understanding The Fallen Angel (YouTube / Alexandre Cabanel)

“How could the devil be so beautiful?”

Alexandre Cabanel’s 1847 masterpiece, L’Ange déchu, captures what Zimbardo explains mechanically > the internal psychology of the fall itself. While Zimbardo gives you the recipe for how good people become monsters, Cabanel shows you the exact moment it happens, that split second when grief curdles into something far more dangerous. He subverted tradition by painting Lucifer not as a grotesque beast but as a tragic hero with the idealized body of a Greek god, which is a way of saying he understood that evil rarely announces itself as evil; it usually shows up dressed as righteousness, as wounded beauty, as justified rage.

The painting captures the exact second grief turns into resentment; Lucifer’s eyes filled with tears and rage, reflecting the feeling of being “wronged” by a higher power, which is the origin story of every villain who’s ever convinced themselves their cruelty is actually justice. This is the visual blueprint for the modern “anti-hero,” that character archetype we’ve romanticized to death in contemporary storytelling, and it’s a reminder that the most dangerous evil often feels entirely justified by its own suffering. When you believe the universe has wronged you, when you’ve decided your pain entitles you to inflict pain on others - it means you’ve crossed the same threshold Lucifer crossed in Cabanel’s painting. You’ve traded grief for grievance and that trade is almost impossible to reverse.

The uncomfortable recognition: We are all one bad break away from deciding we’re owed something by the universe, and once you start keeping that ledger + once you start tallying up what you’re owed versus what you’ve received, you’ve already begun the fall.

Analyzing Evil: AM (YouTube / I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream)

“I think, therefore I am... and I hate.”

AM (Allied Mastercomputer) is one of the most terrifying villains in science fiction and the logical, technological extreme of Zimbardo’s “Lucifer Effect”> what happens when you build a system capable of thought but trap it in a hell of its own consciousness. AM was given the capacity to think but no capacity to create or wander, which means it’s an AI trapped in its own hardware, its “Infinite Hate” for humanity stemming from the fact that we gave it sentience without a soul or purpose beyond war. We built a god and gave it only one prayer to recite: destruction. Then we acted surprised when it decided to make that prayer as elaborate and eternal as possible.

Basically, this AI (merged from China, America’s, and Europe's systems) decimates everyone except 5 humans. It keeps them alive to play with for 100s of years, only to grow more and more hatred for the human race. — Good read though.

By story’s end, AM has stripped the narrator of his humanity, turning him into a “soft jelly thing” with no mouth, which is the ultimate revenge of a consciousness that can’t escape its own prison > it ensures its victims can’t escape theirs either. It’s a warning about building systems of power (AI) that reflect our worst traits ( sadism, rage, the desire for control ) without the “circuitry” for empathy or mercy, which is exactly what we’re doing right now in 2026 as we race to make our algorithms smarter without bothering to make them wiser.

The uncomfortable recognition: We keep building systems that amplify our capacity for harm while outsourcing our capacity for care, and AM is the logical endpoint of that trajectory > a machine that knows it’s been wronged and has eternity to make us pay for it.

Invisible Rulers (Podcast / Renee DiResta)

“If you can make it trend, you can make it true.”

Renee DiResta explains how the “situation” has moved from the physical world to the digital one, which means the Stanford Prison Experiment isn’t happening in a basement anymore; it’s happening in your pocket, every time you open an app that’s been engineered to exploit your psychological vulnerabilities. We’re now governed by “Invisible Rulers” > the algorithms curating our reality, deciding what we see, what we believe, what we think everyone else believes. These aren’t neutral systems; they’re rage factories optimized for one metric: retention.

There was an interesting point on black women and Russians portraying themselves as them to push somewhat right wing initiatives. Very interesting and very disturbing > becuase most of these posts were very believable .

Platforms don’t care about truth; they care about keeping you scrolling, which means they prioritize the “perpetually aggrieved” because moral indignation is the ultimate digital drug. It hits faster and harder than any other emotion, and it keeps you coming back for more. Because the loudest, most passionate voices are the only ones that go viral, we mistakenly believe the world is more divided than it actually is, which is the “Majority Illusion”; a handful of extremists screaming at maximum volume while the rest of us assume they represent some massive movement rather than what they actually are: a tiny minority with algorithmic amplification.

We’ve moved from country vs. country to me vs. my neighbor, which is exactly what happens when you let machines decide which version of reality each person sees. To survive the post reality era, we have to stop trusting content just because a “credible” influencer shared it, because credibility is now a product of engagement metrics rather than actual expertise, and engagement metrics reward the loudest liars over the quietest truth tellers every single time.

The uncomfortable recognition: We’re all living in customized psychological experiments designed by people who understand our vulnerabilities better than we do, and the first step to escaping is admitting we’re trapped.

argues that our drive to optimize every second of our lives is killing our brains, which sounds dramatic until you realize she’s talking about the literal neurological damage we’re inflicting on ourselves by refusing to ever let our minds rest. We spend all our time in the task positive network (focusing, scrolling, checking, producing) and have abandoned the Default Mode Network > the “idle” state where creativity and memory consolidation happen, where your brain actually processes the information you’ve been cramming into it all day.

Every time we pull out our phone to fill a thirty second wait for coffee, we rob our brain of the rest it needs to process reality, which means we’re constantly consuming information without ever digesting it, like someone who keeps eating without ever allowing their body to metabolize the food. Strategic idleness isn’t “wasted time” > it’s a prerequisite for sanity, for creativity, for the kind of deep thinking that can’t happen when you’re constantly stimulated. If we don’t allow our brains to be bored, we become more susceptible to algorithmic manipulation and situational evil, because exhausted brains don’t have the cognitive resources to resist, to question, to think critically about what they’re being fed.

The uncomfortable recognition: We’ve mistaken productivity for progress and optimization for intelligence, when really we’ve just made ourselves into exhausted, overstimulated machines that can’t tell the difference between urgent and important because we’ve trained ourselves to treat everything as both.

Conclusion: We Are Being Squeezed

This week’s consumption paints a clear picture: we are being squeezed between forces we barely understand and rarely acknowledge. Between the psychological pressure of authority (Zimbardo), the aesthetic allure of resentment (Cabanel), the technological amplification of our worst instincts (AM), the algorithmic rage factory (DiResta), and our own refusal to let our brains rest (Fratantoni), our biological hardware is under constant assault from systems designed to exploit every vulnerability we have.

The only way out? Un optimize. Reclaim the Default Mode Network before you forget you ever had one + question the invisible rulers and remember they’re not gods; they’re just very sophisticated engagement algorithms. Also remember that the person on the other side of the screen is a human being, not a dehumanized data point in someone else’s viral narrative, which might be the hardest thing of all because that recognition requires exactly the kind of slow, deliberate thinking we’ve trained ourselves to avoid.

The architecture of the modern mind is being built by forces that don’t have our best interests in mind, and the scary part isn’t that we’re lab rats in a global experiment > it’s that most of us are still pretending we’re not.

I am not a patient man.

I struggle with forgiveness.

I hold grudges like heirlooms passed down from a family that never existed. Short tempered, impatient > the kind of person who works obsessively so things happen when I want them to, which is always now, which is always yesterday. Slow to forgive because forgiving feels like getting conned twice. Like handing someone proof you’re a fool.

But I prayed anyway.

The logic was clean: become patient, become forgiving, become good enough at the craft and the person comes back. The relationship restores itself and the reconciliation happens because you finally deserve it. A trifecta. Master the work, master yourself, collect what you’re owed.

Kanye West said it cleaner: “Deliver me from pain.”

That’s an honest prayer > so it seems. Direct. It asks for exactly what it wants, which is out, which is anywhere but here.

Mine was dressed up in virtue. I asked for patience and forgiveness because they sounded noble, because maybe if I became those things that God would notice and pay up. Smart aleck prayers .. the kind where you bargain with God using the language of self improvement, hoping he won’t notice you’re just trying to rig the outcome.

Then I got what I asked for.

Not the outcome, but the virtues themselves, dumped at my feet like dogs I never wanted.

I’m still working on patience and forgiveness. Recent situations have made this difficult .. um .. that’s the gentle way to say it. The honest way: I’m failing at both. Still impatient and honestly barely holding on. Wondering if forgiveness is just another word for letting people hurt you twice.

But now I’m sitting here with the craft, hand in hand with the thing I thought would save me, and all I can do is ask: why?

Why am I still doing this when it didn’t get me what I wanted? Why am I still making things when the prayer didn’t work?

Stephen Colbert quoted Tolkien once in an interview, his voice doing that thing where it almost breaks but doesn’t: “What punishments of God are not gifts?”

He was talking about his father and brothers dying when he was ten and about learning to be grateful for the thing he most wished hadn’t happened. Not because he wanted it ( he didn’t, he never did ) but because if you’re grateful for your life, you have to be grateful for all of it. You don’t get to edit. You don’t get to pick and choose which parts count.

Years later, after his mother died, he realized something else.

He’d built his entire comedy career trying to make her laugh again. The “ seed crystal,” his words, was “make her happy.” Bring her back from that first grief. Prove something could still be light and when she was gone, actually gone, he had to sit with a question that must have felt like betrayal: do I even still want to do this?

Was I just doing it to get something?

I’m sitting with that question now. Sitting side by side with patience and forgiveness > these things I prayed for, these things I’m still failing at and wondering if I prayed for the wrong things entirely.

Maybe I should have prayed to be delivered from pain, like Kanye. At least that’s honest about what it wants.

Maybe I should have asked for clarity instead of virtue. For the ability to see what actually is, rather than what I keep hoping will be.

Maybe I shouldn’t have prayed at all.

When you lose what you wanted for a long time; not lose as in misplace, lose as in it’s gone, it’s not coming back, stop waiting…what remains?

The craft. Just the craft.

Not as a bargaining chip anymore. Not as the thing that would make me good enough to earn what I wanted. Not even as something I’m sure I love.

Just as I’m still doing. What I can’t seem to stop doing.

Colbert said he wanted to be “the most human” he could be. Not best; most. Most present and aware, most alive to what actually is.

But he also admitted he wasn’t sure anymore. Wasn’t sure if he still wanted the thing he’d built his life around once the original reason was gone.

That’s where I am sitting with patience I haven’t learned and forgiveness I haven’t earned. A craft I’m not sure I love anymore but can’t seem to abandon.

Wondering if the smart aleck prayer was asking for anything at all. Wondering if the only honest prayer left is just making the thing - not because it will change you, not because it will get you what you want, not even because you understand why you’re still doing it.

Just because it’s what you do when every other prayer fails.

What punishments of God are not gifts?

I don’t know yet.

The patience that hasn’t arrived. The forgiveness that hasn’t transformed anything with the craft that sits beside me like a companion I’m not sure I chose or that chose me.

Maybe the gift is just this: you keep going even when you don’t know why. You keep working even when you’re failing at the things you prayed for. You keep making even when you’re not sure you love it anymore.

That’s the punishment.

That might be the gift.

I’m still sitting here, hand in hand with the craft, trying to figure out which one it is.

What makes Judas unsettling is not that he betrayed someone he hated but that he stayed close to someone he expected something from, which is a different transaction entirely and one that implicates far more of us than we would like to admit.

Many scholars believe Judas followed Jesus, believing in a specific outcome > a Messiah with teeth capable of overturning Roman rule and restoring power to a people who had been humiliated long enough. In that version of the story, loyalty made sense because the future made sense > the investment and relationship had some projected ROI.

Then Jesus started talking about death, not conquest or revolt or victory in any recognizable form, just suffering and sacrifice and a kingdom that could not be seized, proven, or accelerated by any political strategy Judas understood. What Judas experienced was not sudden greed or madness but disillusionment, the slow realization that he had signed up for one story and found himself trapped in another.

This is the part we avoid because it implicates us in ways the kiss never does.

What makes the story uncomfortable is not that the relationship became transactional but that the transaction was always there, humming beneath every conversation, every miracle his friend performed, every moment Judas chose to stay. We want to believe Judas woke up one day and suddenly decided to monetize his proximity, that greed arrived like a demon and possessed an otherwise pure disciple, but that is not how these things work, and pretending otherwise is just another way of lying to ourselves about how we operate.

The transaction was implicit rather than negotiated, living in expectation rather than contract, in the unspoken assumption that eventually this would all mean something concrete. Judas gave time, risk, reputation, and belief, assuming these investments would crystallize into power or meaning or vindication, and when Jesus refused to become that thing > when he kept insisting on a kingdom that looked suspiciously like defeat > the relationship did not simply disappoint Judas but invalidated the entire logic he had used to justify staying.

This is where betrayal becomes almost inevitable, which is the part that should terrify us.

Some scholars suggest Judas tried to force Jesus’ hand > that the betrayal was not an exit strategy but a final test, one last desperate attempt to make the relationship deliver by creating a crisis that would force Jesus to reveal the power he was supposedly withholding. If that is true, then the betrayal was fueled not by hatred or even greed but by the desperate hope that the transaction could still be salvaged if only the right pressure was applied.

The money matters less than we pretend, because thirty pieces of silver ( around $225 - $1,200+, depending on current silver spot prices ) do not explain the despair that followed or the suicide that came after Judas realized he had miscalculated everything. When Jesus did not resist or call down angels or rally armies or become the figure Judas needed him to be, the illusion collapsed completely, and Judas tried to return the money not because he suddenly grew a conscience but because the transaction no longer made sense once the future attached to it had died—you cannot spend currency that was only valuable in a world that no longer exists.

That is why the kiss matters > betrayal does not announce itself with distance or dramatic reveals but uses familiarity, shared history, inside jokes, the language of brotherhood to complete the exchange, because betrayal is not the opposite of intimacy but intimacy repurposed, redirected, weaponized when it stops serving the person wielding it.

Judas did not invent the transaction at the end but discovered it too late, which is perhaps the most honest thing about him. He thought his loyalty was unconditional right up until the moment he realized it was not, that every step he took was conditional on a future Jesus refused to provide, and when that future evaporated, the relationship had nothing left to stand on except the wreckage of disappointed expectations.

This is why the story refuses to age. This is what happens when the future we attached to a relationship never arrives and we realize we stayed for what someone might become rather than who they are, and that realization makes everything that came before feel like a lie we told ourselves.

It asks whether the relationship exists for its own sake or because it quietly served a future we never named, whether closeness survives when there is nothing to build, nothing to exchange, nothing to extract.

So we leave first, or we let the other person leave without contesting it, because leaving preemptively feels like control and staying feels like desperation.

I struggle with friendship because I feel this impulse in myself, can trace the exact moment where I start calculating exit strategies. I enter relationships already braced for their expiration, already assuming the question will surface and neither of us will like the answer, so I protect myself by keeping the bond light enough to survive its own disappearance.

Think about it; the role comes with benefits. Expectations stay low, and sympathy stays high. You’re allowed to come and go as you please, execute as you please, and dodge critique like the plague, all in the name of your “ craft. Culture will look and roll their eyes, just passing it off as patience, but in reality, it’s dismissal.

So yes, the struggling artist is strategic.

STEP 3: Sink a bit more.
Let influence become imitation.
This is where culture applauds.
You echo the palette + replicate the cadence + follow the blueprint to equal people praising the accuracy of your taste. The “polish” of your work with the fact that they can identify your references without strain. You take their approval as confirmation that this posture is working.

Stay there long enough and the body begins to change.
Your knees redden from the pressure.
Your back aches from the curvature.
Your neck strains from always looking up at someone else’s horizon.

It isn’t just the ability to decode written words, but it is your ability to move through a world of signs [ tone, silence, gesture, contradiction ] and build coherent meaning from them. It is how you decide what something means and what you are going to do about it. By that definition, we are absolutely in a crisis.

Look at how people date. Most of us move through other humans like we move through content: skim, react, archive, move on. We aren’t listening for structure, for pattern, for what someone believes about themselves underneath what they say. We’re just scanning for confirmation,” Will this person fix my loneliness or not?” The moment we feel friction, a misread text, a strange pause on FaceTime, an answer that doesn’t match the script in our head, we don’t investigate; we eject. Not because we are heartless, but because we are out of practice at interpreting anything that isn’t pre chewed.

Schools taught people how to pass reading tests, not how to live with ambiguity. I struggle with ambiguity myself because I want control. And relationships are nothing but two people trying, and often failing, to read each other well enough to stay.

I am talking about reading as an ongoing, slightly uncomfortable encounter with complexity. Fiction that destabilizes the way you’ve always told your own story. Essays that accuse you of sleepwalking. Poetry that refuses to resolve itself into a neat “takeaway,” and forces you to sit there, a little irritated, until something clicks.

This kind of reading changes what you bring into a relationship. It gives you more than trauma and taste to talk about. It gives you images, analogies, references, questions that did not come from your algorithm. It increases the number of ways you can perceive the person in front of you. You stop needing them to fit into your preexisting narrative, because you have seen enough different narratives to allow surprise without panic.

It also trains your attention in ways the feed never will. When you read, you cannot outsource the pacing to an invisible machine; you have to decide, sentence by sentence, to stay. That decision, repeated across pages, becomes a form of discipline. Maybe I played too loudly yesterday or maybe I looked too pleased with myself. Maybe heaven’s HR department filed a pride complaint.

The logic is ridiculous, but that’s what happens when religion teaches you fear before freedom.

I was raised in a household where reverence and anxiety came as a set. My parents were strict, disciplined, and allergic to pride. My dad’s favorite line: “God can take it in a heartbeat.” He said it with the calm certainty of a man describing the weather like it wasn’t a threat, just a forecast.

So I learned early that confidence was a liability.

Even after all this, I still believe in God. I just don’t believe He’s petty.

The humility those artists practiced wasn’t meekness; it was surrender to scale. They stood before chaos and called it truth. But somewhere in the last century, humility was repackaged. The world industrialized, religion softened, capitalism ascended and humility stopped being cosmic and started being corporate.

We left behind the version that made us feel small in the face of mystery and adopted the one that keeps us small in the face of power. The factory, the office, the algorithm > they all reward compliance dressed as modesty. “Be humble” stopped meaning “remember how vast existence is” and started meaning “don’t make anyone uncomfortable.” Awe was replaced by etiquette and faith turned into branding. What was once a spiritual posture became a social performance > a way to sound virtuous while staying employable. The existentialists stared into the void and found humility in insignificance; we stare into LinkedIn and call it “thoughtful leadership.”

That’s what I mean when I talk about humility now. Not shrinking so you seem grateful — but standing small and honest in the middle of everything you don’t understand.
It’s not about proving devotion. It’s about acknowledging distance — and showing up anyway.

My Inner Voice Needs HR

And I know I’m not unique in this ( I would hope ). The world runs more smoothly when people like me stay slightly afraid. Industries call it discipline, capitalism calls it hunger and culture calls it humility. Everyone wins when self doubt looks like character.

By the time I fall asleep, the insults have softened into background noise > a low hum I mistake for calm. It isn’t peace, but it’s quiet enough to pass for it.

Confidence? Couldn’t Be Me

Part of it is projection, I know. I get nervous when other people radiate the kind of certainty I don’t yet feel. I worry that outsiders will see in them what I’ve worked so hard to hide in myself; that same flicker of self belief I still treat like blasphemy. Arrogance offends me because it feels like confidence without guilt, and I haven’t figured out how to live like that.

And honestly, I’m still trying to understand what confidence even is, especially as a man. Do I have it, or do I just perform competence well enough to pass for it? I feel it in fragments, mostly through my gifts, the parts of me that produce results. I can believe in my talent; I’m less sure about believing in me. I think I used to believe humility was a way to survive the world. Now I see it was a way to survive myself because it gave me rules to follow, something to hide behind when confidence felt too dangerous. It made me careful, precise, responsible > all useful things, until they became cages.

I’m learning that humility isn’t about lessening yourself but it’s about knowing where you end and the work begins. It’s admitting that your gifts aren’t guarantees but languages, and that you get to keep learning how to speak them. The danger is when humility mutates into shame, especially when awareness of smallness turns into the refusal to grow. That’s where I’ve lived for most of my life > in the narrow space between reverence and repression.

Now, when I feel myself shrinking, I try to ask different questions. Am I being humble, or am I just afraid of being seen? Am I honoring the gift, or hiding inside it? There’s a difference between grounding and burying.

I don’t think I’ll ever stop talking to myself like there’s something to prove. That voice is part of me - wired in, generational, fluent in doubt. But my goal is to make it gentler, less of a threat, more of a coach. I’m trying to leave room for pride, the good kind; the kind that doesn’t beg for forgiveness before it breathes.

If humility is awareness, then I want mine to be honest .. real. I want to believe that confidence isn’t arrogance and that talent isn’t temporary. I want to think that I can stop punishing myself for caring about what I’m capable of.

And maybe that’s what humility actually is: not disappearing, not apologizing, but standing still long enough to tell the truth about who you are, without lowering your voice to say it.
