Hands Down

A few years after my husband left me, I asked him a question I’d been sitting with for a long time. Not why he did it; I already knew why, or thought I did. Hundreds of women. That isn’t a figure of speech, and it isn’t a number I arrived at by guessing. Always emotional first, sometimes for months, before it went anywhere else. Until the last one, when it didn’t stay emotional, and that was the end of us.

What I wanted to know was more specific than why. I wanted to know what. What was the actual hook? So I asked him: Is it the swipe, or what comes after—the moment someone likes you back, contacts you, chooses you, wants you?

He didn’t pause. He didn’t need to think about it.

“The swipe,” he said. “Hands down.”

That answer has stayed with me longer than almost anything else from our marriage because I understood it. Not the women. I’ll probably never fully understand that. But the swipe itself, the reflex of it, the before rather than the after, I understood because I’d lived inside the same wiring, just with a different object.

The Prediction Machine

We tend to talk about addiction like it’s a love affair with a substance or a person. The alcoholic loves the drink. The cheater loves the chase, the validation, the next person. It’s a tidy story because it gives compulsion a face, offering us something to point at and say: that’s what you want too much of.

But that’s not always where the hook is. Sometimes the substance or the person is almost beside the point. What the brain has actually learned to crave is the sequence—the small ritual of hand movement, anticipation, repetition—because that sequence has been rehearsed so many times it no longer needs the reward at the end to fire.

Here is where the pop-science version of this has done everyone a disservice. Dopamine has been flattened into a pleasure chemical, the thing that squirts out when something good happens, the thing you’re supposed to fast from on Sundays.

That isn’t what it does.

Starting in the early nineties, the neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz put electrodes into the dopamine neurons of monkeys and gave them juice. At first the cells fired when the juice arrived. But once the monkeys learned that a tone predicted the juice, something strange happened; the firing moved. It migrated backward in time, away from the reward and onto the tone. The juice itself stopped producing a signal at all. And on the trials where the tone sounded and no juice came, the cells didn’t just stay quiet, they dropped below baseline. A dip. A flinch.

Dopamine isn’t a pleasure chemical. It’s a prediction chemical. It doesn’t fire for the good thing; it fires for the news that the good thing might be coming.

Which means the system has a specific appetite: it wants uncertainty. Schultz’s group later showed that the dopamine signal doesn’t peak when a reward is guaranteed. It peaks when the odds are a coin flip; fifty-fifty, maximum ambiguity, the brain leaning as far forward as it can go without knowing. A reward you’re sure of is quiet. A reward you might get is loud.

Every slot machine ever built runs on this. So does every app with a pull-to-refresh. So does a stranger’s face appearing on a screen, one after another, at intervals nobody can predict.

Then there’s the second finding, the one that reorganized how I understand my own life. For decades the assumption was that wanting something and liking something were two ends of the same process; you want it because you like it, you like it so you want it again.

Kent Berridge’s lab at Michigan spent years pulling those apart and found they run on separate machinery. Liking is a small, fragile thing, mediated by opioid and endocannabinoid circuits in a few pinhead-sized patches of the brain. Wanting, what Berridge calls incentive salience, the pull, the leaning-toward, runs on dopamine, and it is neither small nor fragile. With repetition, wanting sensitizes. It gets stronger. Liking doesn’t.

So the two lines separate. Wanting climbs and keeps climbing. Liking flattens, and then falls. And you end up in the position that everyone who has ever been in the grip of something will recognize immediately, and that everyone who hasn’t finds impossible to believe: wanting, enormously, a thing you no longer enjoy.

The third piece is the one that finally explained the ritual to me. Ann Graybiel’s work at MIT describes something called chunking. When you repeat a sequence of actions enough times, the striatum stops treating it as a series of separate decisions and bundles it into a single unit; one command, with a bracket at the beginning and a bracket at the end. Neural activity spikes at the start of the sequence and at its completion, and goes quiet in the middle. The middle doesn’t need you anymore. That’s why you can drive home and remember none of it. The whole route is one chunk. It runs.

Once a behavior has been chunked into a habit, it stops being answerable to its own outcome. In the lab this gets tested by devaluation; you take an animal that has learned to press a lever for food and you make the food worthless, either by feeding it until it’s full or by pairing the food with mild illness. An animal that is still goal-directed stops pressing. It doesn’t want the food, so it doesn’t do the thing that gets the food. An animal whose behavior has gone habitual keeps pressing. Not because it wants the food. Because pressing is what happens now.

The brain builds a groove. Eventually you’re not chasing a feeling anymore. You’re just running the groove, because running the groove is the feeling.

That’s what I think my ex-husband was telling me, without knowing he was telling me. He wasn’t chasing women, not exactly. He was chasing the half-second of possibility before he knew if a woman would swipe back. The rest—the messages, the meeting up, even the sex—was almost an afterthought to a nervous system that had already gotten its hit from the reach.

I know this because I built the exact same groove myself, just with a different hand movement.

Another Rep

In 2018, I was sober from alcohol and newly diagnosed with ADHD. I’d been prescribed Adderall. And within that prescription, an old addiction found a new house to live in.

I didn’t take the pills the way they were meant to be taken. I crushed them and snorted them—insufflation, if you want the clinical word for it—the same way I’d once used opiates. Full disclosure, the reason I nearly died wasn’t because I consumed a dangerous number of pills on purpose, out of despair or carelessness. It’s because I was chasing the ritual, not the drug. The crushing. The lines. The specific motion my body had rehearsed so many times it didn’t need my permission anymore to want it again.

That’s the part people don’t understand about compulsive use, and it’s the part I most want to say plainly: you can be high—genuinely, chemically high—and still reach for more, not because you need to feel higher, but because your body wants to do the thing again.

The high and the ritual are not the same craving. One lives in the effect. The other lives in the muscle memory. I nearly died because the second one didn’t care that the first one had already been satisfied. It just wanted another rep.

I was the animal still pressing the lever. The reward had been delivered. The reward had been delivered several times. It made no difference, because by then the behavior wasn’t in conversation with the reward at all. The chunk had a beginning and an end and it was going to run to the end.

That’s what compulsion actually is, underneath the substance or the swipe or whatever shape it takes for you. It’s a behavior that has become self-rewarding independent of its outcome.

The outcome was never really the point.

The point was doing the motion one more time.

The Seam

I think about my ex-husband’s answer a lot, because of how instantly he gave it. No hedging, no self-protective story about love or connection or what he thought he was looking for out there. Just: the swipe. He knew, the way I know now, that somewhere along the way the behavior had stopped being in service of anything. It had become the thing itself.

I don’t say any of this to excuse what he did, or to excuse what I did to my own body. Compulsion isn’t an excuse. It’s a mechanism, and mechanisms can be understood without being forgiven, and definitely without being indulged. But I do think there’s something worth handing to anyone who’s ever wondered why they, or someone they love, keeps returning to a thing that clearly isn’t making them happy anymore.

Sometimes the question “why do you keep doing this” has a different answer than we expect. Not because it feels good. Because the reaching itself became the reward, a long time ago, and the brain never got the memo.

Which is also why shame doesn’t work, and I mean that mechanically, not as a kindness. Shame is aimed at the outcome; at what you did, at what it cost, at who found out. The groove is upstream of all of that. It was never listening to the outcome in the first place; that’s the entire problem. Worse, shame is a state of high negative affect, and negative affect is one of the most reliable triggers for reinstating exactly the behavior you’re ashamed of. It doesn’t interrupt the loop. It feeds the front of it.

What does seem to interrupt it is stranger and much less satisfying: seeing the groove as a groove. The goal-directed system and the habit system are in constant competition for the wheel, and the goal-directed one can take back control, but only when it’s actually engaged, and it isn’t engaged when you’re deep in the automatic middle of a chunk.

Naming the reach is how you engage it. Not I want a drink, not I’m a person who does this, but: my hand is moving, and it started moving before I decided anything. That sentence is a bracket. It puts a seam in the middle of something that was designed to have no seams.

I’ll be honest about the limit of it, because the research is honest about the limit of it: the old groove doesn’t get erased.

Habits that have been suppressed can be reactivated, and the pathway that carried them stays intact underneath the new behavior. That sounds like bad news. I’ve come to think of it as operating instructions. You’re not waiting to become a person who no longer has the groove. You’re becoming a person who can feel it light up and recognize the sensation as information rather than instruction.

I didn’t know that in 2018.

I know it now, mostly because I almost didn’t get to know anything else.

I had the pen. I had the sponsor. I had the willingness, and I want to be precise about that, because willingness is the first thing anyone questions and I had it in quantities that frightened me.

What I did not have was the ability to keep my hand moving for longer than about forty minutes before something in me went quiet and went somewhere else, and I would surface an hour later in front of most of a cooking show I do not remember choosing.

Yeah, I made a “searching” and “fearless” moral inventory of myself—ahem, selves.

Then I said I wasn’t ready.

People said, kindly, that I would know when it was time. Nobody was cruel to me. I want that on the record before I say the rest of it, because none of what follows is a grievance against the people who kept me alive.

It is, rather, a question about a piece of equipment they handed me in good faith, seventy-odd years after it was built, without a manual for the failure I was about to have.

Below: why the instrument misfires on a shame-based person, the three questions I ask before I open anything, the columns I use now instead of the four I was given, and the exact words to say to a sponsor who thinks you’re stalling.

THE STALL

Ask around. That is all I did—asked around, in parking lots and after meetings and in the fluorescent hour when it is too late to perform. Ask how many people are sitting on a fourth step. A year in. Two. A woman in a folding chair told me nine, in the tone you would use to confess a sordid affair.

Nine years. You can become a surgeon in less.

The rooms have a diagnosis ready…

He isn’t ready; she’s in her disease; they never got honest. Every one of those locates the failure inside the person and never once inside the instrument.

But when something fails at scale, in the same shape, across decades, in a population you could have named in advance, that is not a character flaw. That is a design specification. And it is not hidden. It is right there in the year.

1939

Post-traumatic stress did not enter the diagnostic manual until 1980—forty-one years after the book was written, and only then because a generation came home from Vietnam and would not be quiet.

Judith Herman published Trauma and Recovery in 1992 with a claim now so established it is nearly boring: recovery runs in stages and the stages are not optional.

Safety first. Stabilization. Capacity, regulation, and one other person who can hold what you are about to open.

Processing before stabilization does not produce insight. It produces flooding. It produces dissociation. It produces people who get worse and are then told that getting worse is the point.

The steps invert that order. They put the excavation at number four, before you have been handed a single tool for what comes out of it. Not out of malice. Out of chronology.

Those men were working with the science available to them, which was almost none, and they built something still standing eighty-seven years later. I have real gratitude for that, and respect for them as human beings—as servants of their fellow men. At the risk of redundancy: I am not litigating 1939.

I’m asking why nobody has touched the sequence since.

THE WRONG INSTRUMENT

Guilt and shame are not the same instrument. Guilt says I did something bad. Shame says I am bad.

Guilt is a sorting tool. It files actions into columns and hands the pile back to a self that is still standing when the work is done.

The whole ledger depends on there being somebody left over to set the pen down.

Run it on a person made of shame and it does not sort anything. It supplies. Page after page, in your own handwriting, confirming the conclusion you reached about yourself at seven.

You are not taking an inventory. You are building the case against yourself, and you are a cooperative witness, because you have believed the charge your whole life.

Step four was built for a man whose problem was too much ego. Grandiosity, self-will run riot, the drunk who thinks he is God. Deflate him and he lives. For that man the thing is close to a miracle.

But if your problem is too much shame, a searching moral inventory does not humble you.

It confirms you.

THE QUESTION

The worst of it is not in the sentence. It is in the question that comes after, the one everybody learns before they have learned anything else.

What was my part in it?

For most people, that question is a door. It is where the story stops being something that happened to you and starts being something you have some say over. I have watched it save people.

For a survivor, it can finish the job. A child had no part. A person being beaten had no part. Asking someone to locate their share of what was done to them is not rigorous honesty.

It is the abuser’s argument, delivered in the program’s voice, at a kitchen table, at two in the morning—which is, not incidentally, the exact condition shame requires to survive.

Alone. At night. Unsupervised.

With a pen.

If you set out to design a room where shame could not be disproven, you would build that one.

WHAT’S MISSING

There is no column in the traditional fourth-step model for what you loved. For what you were good at, what you were like at nine before any of this started, what made you laugh so hard you had to sit down.

The ledger has one column and it is what you did wrong. Everything else is understood to be waiting on the far side, available once the accounting clears. A reward for finishing.

I don’t think it is the reward. I think it is the load-bearing wall.

We have been asking people to demolish a house while they are standing inside it, and then calling it resistance when they stop at page eleven.

THE REVISION

Made a searching and compassionate inventory—of what happened to me, what I did to survive it, and what I love that is still in there.

Hear me out:

Compassionate instead of fearless, because you do not order a terrified nervous system to stop being terrified before anything has made it safe.

What happened to me, because the story does not start at my first bad decision.

What I did to survive it, because the lying and the hiding and the numbing were not sins. They were solutions to a problem I could not solve any other way, which is exactly why I kept them.

And what I love that is still in there, because something always is, and it is usually the only part nobody got to.

BEFORE YOU OPEN IT

Everything above is diagnosis. Here is what I use. Three questions before the pen touches anything.

Can you come back?

Not can you go there. Anyone can go there. The question is whether you have ever, on purpose, gone somewhere hard and returned to the room the same day. If the answer is no, that is the assignment, and it comes first. The material will wait. It has waited this long.

Is there a person?

Not a person who loves you. A person who has said yes to this specific thing, in advance, in words, and who has agreed to pick up. One is enough. Shame cannot survive being witnessed by somebody who doesn’t flinch—which is exactly why it prefers you alone at a kitchen table.

What time is it?

Daylight. Nothing true has ever been discovered about a person after midnight; two in the morning is not honesty, it is low blood sugar and a nervous system with no supervision. And set a timer for twenty minutes. Stop when it goes off even if you are mid-sentence—especially then. My forty minutes was not a defect, it was data. Twenty minutes four times a week beats one heroic Sunday that costs you the next three.

And you stop at the first sign, not the worst one. The first sign is not tears—tears mean you are still in the building. It is distance. The room going slightly unreal. Your hand still writing while you can’t quite feel it.

And the obvious: anywhere near crisis, this is a job for a trauma therapist, not an essay by a woman with a drugstore notebook. I did this wrong for years. I am telling you what it cost.

THE COLUMNS

The Big Book gives you four: who I resent, what they did, what it affected, what my part was. Here are the five I use instead—one line per entry, filled left to right, never skipping ahead.

One. What happened.

Plain. Just the event. No “but he was under a lot of stress.” The reflex to soften it here is the whole thing we are correcting for.

Two. How old I was.

A number. Nobody includes this column and it does more work than the other four combined. You will write nine in that box and watch the page reorganize itself. There is no argument against a nine.

Three. What I did to survive it.

I lied. I left. I got numb. I got funny. I got so good at reading a room that I can still tell you the mood of a house from the sound of a car door. Write it without the word just.

Four. What it cost me, what it saved.

Both, same box. The behavior worked; not a defense of it, just the reason it stayed. Nobody keeps a strategy that never worked. You were not stupid. You were surrounded.

Five. What is still in there.

What you loved. What you were good at. The thing you would do at nine until somebody made you come inside. Not a treat at the end—same day, same page, same handwriting.

And at the bottom of the page, the question:

Where do I still have a choice?

I am not arguing the inventory is dangerous. I did mine eventually, badly, out of order, then again with someone in the room whose job was to notice when I left my body.

Most useful week of my life. It will happen again, as it should. The 12 steps are as cyclic as the cosmos.

So, to reiterate:

The fourth step is not the problem. Doing it before you are safe, without someone, is.

The notebook is still in the drawer. I am not going to burn it. Burning it would be its own kind of theater and I have done enough theater.

I am going to start again on page twelve some day soon. Different question at the top. Someone else in the room. My own fucking columns.

Just like Bill. He didn’t inherit that format from anybody either. He sat down at a table and made it up out of what he needed.

The session costs eighty dollars and comes with a code of conduct. No kissing, no groping, no falling asleep. The practitioner explains—straightening the cushions on what is essentially a very large futon—you keep your socks on.

The client, a man in his forties, has come straight from the office and still carries the smell of it. He is handed a laminated card and asked to choose from a menu of positions with names like the Spoon, the Mama Bear, the Heart-to-Heart.

He chooses the Spoon. For the next hour, a stranger will hold him for money, and afterward, to the friend who referred him, he will describe it as “surprisingly relaxing.” He will not use the word he means, because we no longer keep a socially permissible way to say it out loud.

The word is starving.

Somewhere along the way, human beings became the only animal capable of going an entire fiscal quarter without being touched and filing the experience under fine.

Consider how absurd that sentence would have sounded to nearly everyone who came before us.

A hunter-gatherer did not withdraw into a private apartment to process her grief for twenty years. No one was expected to regulate an entire nervous system alone, armed with a podcast, a weighted blanket, and an inspirational tile about healing.

Our ancestors survived because they were never solitary creatures pretending to be social. They were social creatures who understood, correctly, that surviving alone was not on the menu.

The pack instinct is the oldest thing in us—older than language—and we are losing our grip on it in real time.

Modern neuroscience has handed this ancient intuition a technical vocabulary.

Researchers in attachment, affect regulation, and social neuroscience keep arriving at the same unglamorous finding: the human nervous system is not a closed unit but a component in a larger circuit.

We stabilize one another.

A calm face lowers a child’s stress response.

A familiar voice reorganizes the body’s arousal from across a room.

The psychologist James Coan put people in a brain scanner under the threat of a mild electric shock and found that when a partner simply held their hand, the neural alarm quieted measurably.

The threat, in some real sense, was metabolized between two bodies rather than borne by one.

Touch, in other words, is not emotional decoration laid over the top of biology.

It is biology.

Matthew Hertenstein’s research on touch showed that a stranger, touching only your forearm, can communicate anger, fear, gratitude, or love at rates well above chance.

Researchers who study its absence, the condition sometimes called ‘skin hunger,’ describe touch starvation the way a physician describes a nutrient deficiency: measurable, cumulative, and bad for you—showing up as elevated stress and a loneliness that finally has somewhere physical to sit.

And yet we have built an entire civilization on the fantasy that needing others is a flaw to be outgrown.

We admire independence.

We praise self-sufficiency.

We call a person ‘strong’ precisely when they appear to require nothing.

We have quietly agreed that the summit of human achievement is to become the one thing we were never designed to be: untouchable.

The strangest part is where that vision comes from. One of the most influential arguments for the sealed, self-sufficient human began with a man alone in a room.

The question is not whether consciousness is embodied.

That much is obvious.

The question is whether it was once more continuous than it is now allowed to be.

Less interrupted.

Less abstracted.

Less trapped inside interpretive systems that arrive after perception and quietly overwrite it.

Or more precisely: whether human awareness once moved in closer agreement with orientation, instinct, rhythm, and environmental coherence than modern civilization can currently support without distortion.

Somewhere beneath language, beneath ideology, beneath the low electrical hum of contemporary life, the body does not stop listening.

It only stops being listened through.

You can feel this in small discontinuities.

A moment where you enter a room and your attention misfires before you decide what anything means.

A sense of direction that doesn’t come from reasoning, but from something closer to compression.

A strange certainty that precedes evidence, then disappears when you try to interrogate it.

Writing, at its unstable edge, does not feel like invention.

It feels like recognition.

Something already circulating through the nervous system arriving at the threshold of language and briefly becoming legible.

Not thought becoming text.

But signal passing through resistance.

At least, for me, anyway.

“Against Nature”—a 2000s clothing label by Australian designer Simon—keeps resurfacing in the background like an artifact that never fully integrated into cultural memory and keeps me 23 and working at Jill Stuart in Soho.

The phrase carries a double exposure.

Rebellion against ecology.

And a buried desire to return to something older than culture’s permission structure.

It does not resolve.

It lingers.

The human condition is not stable for me in the way it is assumed to be.

It does not sit still long enough to become purely conceptual.

It presses back.

Sometimes it terrifies.

Sometimes it captivates.

Often it does both at once, without transitioning between the two.

And somewhere in that oscillation, something in me recognizes it rather than learns it.

THE BODY IS STILL HEARING

Magnetoreception sits in that strange zone where biology begins to resemble something we are not fully prepared to interpret.

Birds crossing continents without maps.

Sea turtles returning to the exact beaches where they were born.

Salmon tracing invisible geometries back into rivers they have not consciously seen.

For a long time these were treated as anomalies.

Now they are treated as systems.

Multiple species appear capable of detecting Earth’s magnetic field—an orientation layer embedded in living tissue itself.

A form of navigation that does not rely on vision, memory, or thought in the way humans typically define them.

What was once folklore has become quiet consensus.

But consensus does not equal comprehension.

Because the question is no longer whether orientation exists beyond cognition.

It is whether cognition was ever separate from orientation in the first place.

Humans also carry cryptochrome proteins, including CRY2, present in retinal and circadian systems.

This is not evidence of a hidden gift.

It is evidence of continuity.

And continuity, properly understood, is more destabilizing than novelty.

Evolution rarely discards functioning systems.

It suppresses them.

Reroutes them.

Layers them beneath newer interpretive architectures until their original function becomes difficult to recognize without strain.

Which leaves a more precise question: not whether humans can detect magnetic fields,

but whether perception itself was ever meant to be sealed off from them.

THE SIGNAL BENEATH THE NOISE

Modern life unfolds inside conditions the nervous system did not evolve to stabilize.

Artificial light extended beyond dusk.

Electromagnetic saturation.

Continuous cognitive fragmentation.

Detachment from season, terrain, and silence.

The body, shaped in weather systems and ecological rhythm, now attempts to regulate itself under uninterrupted artificial continuity.

And still—

Something persists.

Not intact.

But active.

This persistence is often misread as anxiety.

Or intuition.

Or dysfunction.

Sometimes it is all three.

Sometimes none of them are sufficient.

Because what we are calling “disorientation” may not be psychological failure at all.

It may be an ecological mismatch expressed through nervous system language.

And if that is true, then the problem is not that we have lost orientation.

It is that we are still trying to generate it in environments that no longer provide the conditions for it to stabilize.

Given a stability test before launch—sailors running port to starboard on its deck—that had to be stopped early because the ship was tilting badly enough to capsize right there in the harbor.

And then: maiden voyage. Fair weather. Crowds gathered on the shore to witness the future of Swedish naval power sailing out into the world.

A gust of wind hit.

The Vasa tilted, righted herself, then tilted again when the second gust came. Water entered through the open gunports. She sank in under an hour, 120 meters from shore, in full view of spectators, on a clear August day in 1628.

Not in battle. Not in a storm. A breeze.

The Hook That Snagged Me

The number 333 is the reason I went down this particular rabbit hole—my number, my signal, the one that keeps surfacing in doorways and receipts and page numbers when something is about to open up.

The Vasa sat at the bottom of Stockholm harbor for 333 years before it was raised in 1961. I don’t think that’s cosmically ordained. I think it’s the kind of detail that acts as a hook, that snagged my attention long enough for the real inquiry to set in.

Because the Vasa isn’t an interesting story because of the sinking. It’s an interesting story because of what the sinking is.

The shadow is not merely evil.

Often, the shadow is simply the ignored engineering report.

A Navy Capable of Carrying the Mythology

By 1626, Sweden was a serious European power—a professional army, mobile artillery, dominant trade position in the Baltic. What King Gustavus Adolphus needed was a navy capable of carrying the mythology Sweden had already started telling about itself.

He commissioned Dutch shipbuilder Henrik Hybertsson to build it. The ship that emerged—69 meters long, two full gun decks, 64 bronze cannons, hundreds of painted sculptures, an elaborate iconography of empire—was less a military vessel than a three-dimensional declaration. The Vasa was Sweden saying: behold what we are.

Hybertsson reportedly said the design was too top-heavy. Said it plainly.

The tests confirmed it. A demonstration was halted because the ship was listing dangerously, with sailors just jogging across the deck.

And everyone proceeded anyway.

It shows up earliest in childhood, before social pressure and peer influence begin to drown it out, as a specific and often visceral pull toward certain ideas, activities, or ways of engaging with the world.

The problem is not that this inclination is rare, but that most people spend the years between childhood and adulthood systematically losing contact with it.

This underlying mechanism is not especially mysterious.

The brain learns at a dramatically faster rate when it is emotionally engaged with a subject. That engagement triggers the release of dopamine and norepinephrine, neuromodulators that signal salience and drive consolidation.

In practical terms, this means that attention is not neutral.

A person working inside their primal inclination is not simply more motivated; they are operating within a system that is continuously reinforcing itself at the level of encoding.

What is often described as “chemistry” is, in many cases, the nervous system recognizing alignment between an external stimulus and an internal pattern that predates conscious awareness.

This recognition tends to register somatically before it can be articulated, as a felt sense rather than a fully formed thought.

I recognized that sensation early, and although not able to name it at the time, it felt nothing like I thought inspiration should feel, and everything like compulsion with a structure might look.
