Many students calculate them once, place them in a table, and never think about them again.

The Detective's Lens: Getting to Know Your Sample (workbook + html app) is designed to deepen your exploration of how your sample is responding.

Instead of only reporting means and standard deviations, you’ll learn how to consider your sample, provide feasible explanations for unexpected hypothesis findings, and build richer Discussion section. Move beyond “the hypothesis was not supported” and surface level comparisons with previous literature, or identification of study limitations and future recommendations.

Think of it as learning to interview your data rather than merely filing the paperwork:

• Identify characteristics of your sample that may have contributed to your hypothesis test outcomes

• Use insights from restricted range, floor or ceiling effects, and size of variability to help explain a findings

• Ideas about how to compare your sample with lit review samples and findings

• Generate plausible, evidence-based explanations for your findings without over claiming

The workbook provides a six-level scaffold that progressively develops your ability to “read” a dataset like a detective reads a crime scene. Each level builds on the previous one, moving from describing your sample to constructing sophisticated, evidence-based interpretations that examiners are looking for.

You’ll also find worked examples, practical questions to ask of your own data, and guidance on turning numerical output into clear academic writing.

The app too complements to aid your reasoning when looking at your descriptive statistics. Dig into your descriptive statistics, which often contain the clues to explain why your results turned out the way they did.

To aid your thoughtful interpretation of the evidence, the html app sets prompts to guide you from statistical output to evidence-based academic writing.

The goal is to help you understand the people behind the numbers.

I find the biggest challenge for students is thinking their way through their findings, to reasonable conclusions which contribute to scientific knowledge.

So me and Claude CoWorker compiled a companion app, to aid the synthesis crucial for a kick-ass Discussion section. The app acts as a guided thinking partner, walking you through considered ‘moves’ to make in your write-up.

The goal of the Discussion Synthesis app is to help you develop your judgement (taste) to:

• Turn results into defensible knowledge claims

• Translate the stats/themes into plain-English psychological meaning

• Identify plausible theoretical mechanisms for your findings

• Compare findings to previous research (i.e., your lit review) with greater depth

• Explore discrepancies with previous literature as opportunities for future research, rather than framing them as limitations of your study

• Build a construct-level synthesis that demonstrates classical critical scholarly thinking

As such, the app slows your writing-thinking-reading cyclical process to aid you asking yourself better questions. Also, the app can assist you in better organising your reasoning, your academic arguments, to produce a Discussion section that carries psychological science forward.

However, the gap between knowing you should interrogate your own work and actually having the questions to do it, is what the Thesis Check-in App is for.

The Thesis Check-in App is a single browser file ~ no login, no internet required after it loads, nothing stored anywhere except for on your device.

There is not a list of instructions, nor a checklist. Choose amongst the sections of a thesis and answer two questions.

The questions are based on examiner feedback, and thesis rubric, and my experience working with students in 4th year, Masters, and PhD. The idea is for you to think deeply about what you’ve written in your draft, and to consider possible edits.

I’ve aimed to cover sections relevant to qual and quant or mixed methods thesis projects. Eighteen sections. Over 130 questions total.

The app tracks which questions you’ve been asked per section, and rotates items so you will not get the same question twice in a row. When every angle in a section has been covered, it tells you and starts fresh.

You can log your responses and you can ‘print page’ from your chosen browser, for a pdf or hard copy of the chronicle of your responses.
