This month, our focus is preventing further escalation of war.

President Trump and his allies home and abroad have instigated a war of choice in the Middle East that has already thrown the world into chaos and cost the lives of thousands of civilians and six American service members.

🟧Educational Resources

The U.S. Constitution divides powers of war between the president and Congress. While the president is the Commander-in-Chief of the military, Congress has the power to raise and maintain our armed forces and formally declare war. However, the pendulum of war powers has swung toward the executive in the modern era, allowing Trump to effectively bypass Congress and engage in a costly and unnecessary war. Beyond the destruction and loss of life, the war has already cost American taxpayers nearly $900 million per day.

Congressional leadership has stated that the White House will likely be requesting at least $50 billion more for the war. This is in addition to the $153 billion previously appropriated to the Department of Defense. Though the effort to stop the conflict from expanding through a War Powers Resolution vote failed in both the Senate and the House this week (see how your representatives voted here), Congress could still use their “power of the purse” to block further funding for this war.

This month, our focus is protecting the integrity of our elections. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the President of the United States continues to insist that there is widespread fraud in American elections. Though his claims have repeatedly been proven unfounded*, the President is unconstitutionally attempting to assert federal control over state elections.

The Elections Clause (Article 1, Section 4 of the United States Constitution), empowers each state to establish its own laws and procedures that govern congressional elections. Federal elections are overseen at the state level by the governor, the state attorney general and a chief election official—usually the secretary of state—or a bipartisan elections board.

*An Associated Press investigation in 2021 found fewer than 475 instances of potential voter fraud across six battleground states, a number far too small to have affected the election’s outcome. 158,429,631 votes were cast in the 2020 election- so 0.00029% of votes cast. Most instances were isolated and not part of any coordinated effort. The cases involved both registered Democrats and Republicans, and the culprits were almost always caught before the fraudulent ballot was counted. Analysis of US data from other election years shows how minuscule fraud is in American elections (Brookings Institution).

🔗 ACLU 100 Mile Zone: The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects people from random and arbitrary stops and searches. Although the federal government claims the power to conduct certain kinds of warrantless stops within 100 miles of the U.S. border, important Fourth Amendment protections still apply.

Local Action Item

Shop intentionally: Where you spend your money matters. Consider downloading an app like GoodsUniteUs to better inform yourself about where you shop and where your money is going when not shopping locally. Consider commenting below some of your favorite local businesses you shop at and why.

Donation Action Item

Donate to the League of Women Voters: They are working to expand voting rights, reduce the influence of money in politics, and keep power in the hands of the people. A current top priority is lobbying against the SAVE Act. Alternatively, you can join our local chapter here (all are welcome).
