The hippos were everywhere this morning — a quiet nation resting in the sun, half-earth, half-river. Nothing rushed. Nothing alarmed. Just the steady rhythm of a species older than any map drawn to claim this land.

A reminder that the Mara doesn’t exist for us —

It’s the only place where my instincts arrive

they all return in fragments

long before I see them.

I’m not going to the wild.

I’m going back to myself.

Backstage at the UNICEF Ball, moments before the night began —
and one person had the final verdict on my entire look, mood, and presence:

The Queen herself… and she said YES.

Not metaphorically.
Not spiritually.
Literally — her purse said it.
And Deborah Duncan, Queen of Houston, held it up like a royal decree.

Some people need red carpet validation.
I get mine from a woman whose laugh fills an entire room
and whose “yes” feels like a cosmic stamp of approval.

The funny thing is — this wasn’t staged.
We were just catching our breath before the evening took off,
the orchestra warming up, guests arriving, purpose filling the hall…
and somehow she turned a simple moment into its own kind of coronation.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned at UNICEF events, it’s this:

Portraits of children already watched the room.

And on stage,

Michael Bolton rehearsed.

and decided to remain.

Light behaves differently here.

It doesn’t merely illuminate the landscape.
It becomes part of it —
sliding across the mineral pools,

Nothing seems aware of the thousands of visitors
who arrive searching for a spectacle.

After weeks of movement —
Paris, airports, schedules, decisions —
Antalya arrived like an exhale I didn’t know I needed.

The light here doesn’t demand attention.
It simply opens the day.

Below the terrace, the Mediterranean moved with complete indifference to my arrival.
The cliffs stood where they had stood yesterday,
and where they will likely stand long after all of us are gone.

There is something comforting about that.

Sitting above the water,
watching the coastline curve into the distance,
I felt the pace finally loosen.
Not because anything changed,
but because nothing was asking for anything.

No urgency.
No performance.
No interpretation.

Just sea.
Stone.
Sky.

Then a shadow crossed the water.

A bird of prey drifted through the warm air,
circling once,
then again,
before releasing a cry sharp enough to divide the afternoon in two.

Even peaceful places have guardians.

The breeze shifted.

until truth stood with no decoration left to hide behind.

Here, Baldwin lit a fire beneath the conscience of a century,

writing with a clarity the world still struggles to face.

Here, Proust stretched memory into eternity,

turning a single sensation into an entire universe.

Here, Sartre and Beauvoir debated freedom as if it were oxygen,

teaching a generation that existence was not inherited

but chosen.

And woven between them all were the others:

but don’t confuse that with innocence.

These stones have absorbed revolutions, heartbreaks,
half-written novels, carefully hidden scandals,
