I’m an investor in two of the three robotics companies in this video (below), and they’ve reached opposite conclusions about the same problem.

Watch it. The surface argument is about hands.

• 1X is doubling down on tendons. Figure tried them and walked away. Tesla is now moving toward them. Three of the most serious teams on the planet, same problem, opposite answers.

• Bernt Børnich, 1X: “Millions of cycles under load later... I hope you’ve accepted it’s a skill issue.”

• Brett Adcock, Figure: “The biggest engineering mistake I made at Figure was building a tendon-based hand.”

• Elon Musk on Tesla Optimus: “Something like those tendons has to be re-engineered into Optimus.”

But the tendon debate is the small question. Here is the big one….

The hand is the line between a robot that demos well and a robot that does real physical work. Whoever crosses it first sets the clock on how fast human labor gets rebuilt around machines. That clock is the entire subject of my book, The Last 1000 Days of Work, out end of October.

And it forces a question I think those of us writing the checks have to answer out loud. It is the exact argument I’m putting on stage at our Responsible Machines panel at the Family Offices & Investors Summit during Climate Week NYC on September 21. Not can we build them, but whether we are letting them into the world responsibly, or just quickly.

So which is it?

A) Humanoid robots are the answer

B) Humanoid robots are an irresponsible mistake from us, the investors funding them

C) Nobody knows yet

I have my own answer, and I will give it to you at the end. But first, let me tell you why I have started counting down. 🕰️

I. Why a thousand days

A year ago I wrote a book and called it The Last 7 Years of Work. I was right about the direction and wrong about almost everything that actually matters, which is the speed and the shape.

The future I had penciled in for 2032 started showing up outside my window in a fraction of the time. So I am writing it again, and this time I am calling it Last 1000 Days of Work, because that is roughly how long it took the world I forecast for the next decade to start arriving early.

A thousand days is not a prediction. It is a warning about how little time is left to act. This newsletter is where I am going to spend those days out loud, with you, one at a time.

II. I did not learn this at a desk

I did not shorten the clock from a spreadsheet. I shortened it because I spent the last thousand days in the rooms where this future gets financed.

I sat across the table from hundreds of family offices deciding where to put serious capital, and I watched their question change. It went from “is this real” to “how do I get in before the door closes.” That shift, more than any demo or any hand, is the tell. The people whose entire job is to be early have stopped asking whether. They are asking how fast.

Then I stopped only watching. I put my own money into the machine. Into Anthropic. Into Figure AI, into Prometheus, Atoms… into the robotics companies you’ll see in the news in a few months or years.

Into private rounds most people will never see the inside of.

Which is exactly why option B in that poll is not rhetorical for me. I am one of the people it is about.

III. My credential is also my wound

Before I was an investor I was a founder. I built a company called GetLinks, a marketplace for hiring technology talent across Southeast Asia. And I watched, in real time, as the exact force this book is about hollowed it out from underneath me. The recruiters my business was built to connect are being removed from the process by the same automation I now invest in.

So when I describe what is coming for work, I am not theorizing. I am describing something that already happened to me. That is my credential and it is also my wound, and both of them will be in every issue of this thing.

IV. It begins where no one looks

The story of the end of work does not begin with the machines at all. It begins with how few of us are being born.

Across the developed world, birth rates have fallen below the line that replaces a population. Fewer workers, more retirees, and an economy that suddenly has every reason to want a labor force that does not sleep, does not age, and does not need to be replaced by children who were never born. Automation is not disrupting a healthy economy. It is arriving into a demographic vacuum that was already pulling it in. The hand in that video is what fills the vacuum.

Follow that arithmetic forward and you reach the shape I keep drawing for family offices: the two-armed economy, the K. One arm is the people who own the transition, and it rises. The other arm is the people who sold their labor to it, and it falls. There is no third arm.

V. The admission I owe you

I am going to argue, over the coming issues, that what this builds is not a new kind of capitalism but an old kind of order wearing better software. Ownership becoming hereditary again. Housing passing out of the reach of a wage. A handful of companies holding something closer to sovereign power than corporate power. I call it techno-feudalism, and I do not use the word lightly.

And I owe you one uncomfortable admission at the start, so you are never blindsided by it. I am going to spend a great deal of time describing a system I find frightening. And then I am going to tell you to buy into it. The honest way through this is not to stand outside the machine and object while it eats the ground under your feet. It is to own a piece of it, and then use what you own to protect the things worth protecting. I will show you exactly how, and why, in the issues to come.

So, my answer.

Not A. The people selling you A own the machines. Not B either, because refusing to fund it does not stop it, it just means someone with fewer scruples writes the check instead. My answer is that we are somewhere in C, and that C is the most dangerous option of the three, because “nobody knows yet” is precisely the window in which the rules still get written. That is what Responsible Machines is about. That is what the next thousand days are for.

This is not a doom letter and it is not a hype letter. It is a field manual. Its only job is to help you get your family onto the right side of a transition that is going to sort almost everyone, while the sorting is still in progress.

What you own over the next thousand days will decide which arm of the K your children stand in.

1. We are entering a K-shaped economy.

2. The shareholders of the new world will control the next 10 generations. Who will have a seat at the table?

3. The sorting has already begun.

There is a fashionable opinion right now, on both the left and the right, in Europe and in the emerging world, that the American empire is ending and that this is something to celebrate.

The debt is unsustainable. The politics are broken. The military overextended. The dollar weaponized one too many times. The BRICS bloc is building the alternative. China is ascendant. The unipolar moment is over, and a great many intelligent people believe the multipolar world that replaces it will be more just, more balanced, more free.

I did the opposite of what that opinion recommends.

I am writing this from California, where I moved this year, in the exact season everyone else is announcing their exit.

While the commentary class films its departure videos, I got on a plane and moved in. I will come back to why below.

Bref, I moved to America.

But before telling you why, in this newsletter, I want to offer a warning from history.

…Not a defense of American policy. A warning about what actually happens when a trade-based empire that underwrites global commerce collapses.

Because it has happened before, precisely 1177 B.C (Bronze Age Collapse).

And the world that followed was not more just or more balanced. It was darkness.

For a thousand years. so, let’s not aim for that…?

I. The First Globalized Economy ⚡

Most people think of the ancient world as isolated kingdoms occasionally trading luxury goods. That is not what the Late Bronze Age was.

For more than three centuries, from roughly 1500 to 1200 BC, the Mediterranean and “Near East” hosted something the world would not see again until the modern era: a genuinely globalized economy.

The Egyptians, the Mycenaean Greeks, the Minoans of Crete, the Hittites of Anatolia, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Cypriots, and the Canaanites were bound together in a single interconnected system of trade, diplomacy, and mutual dependence.

The defining technology of the age was bronze. And bronze required tin and copper. Here is the critical fact: the tin came from Afghanistan, thousands of miles to the east. The copper came from Cyprus. The finished goods, the gold, the lapis lazuli, the manufactured luxuries, moved across a web of sea routes and overland caravans that stitched the entire civilized world into one supply chain.

No single kingdom had all the ingredients. Every kingdom needed the others.

To make the essential material of the age, you needed a functioning international trade network spanning the entire known world.

The archaeologist Eric Cline, whose book 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed (check out the book here) defined the modern understanding of this period, describes it plainly: it was the world’s first globalized economy, and its wealth came precisely from that interconnection.

Sound familiar? Think of today’s semiconductors supply chain.

Replace tin from Afghanistan and copper from Cyprus with lithium from Chile, rare earths from China (source here), semiconductors from Taiwan, and energy through the Strait of Hormuz. Replace the sea routes of the Aegean with the container lanes of the Pacific and the sea lanes the United States Navy has policed since 1945.

The Late Bronze Age was a thalassocracy, an empire of the seas, built on trade. So is ours.

And that is exactly why its collapse should concern us.

II. How It Ended: The Sea Peoples and the Cascade 🌊

Around 1200 BC, the system began to fail. Within about fifty years, it was gone.

For a long time historians blamed a single cause: the Sea Peoples (painting). Mysterious seafaring raiders who appear in Egyptian inscriptions, descending on the coastal cities, burning the palaces, and scattering the populations.

In 1177 BC they invaded Egypt itself. The pharaoh’s army defeated them, but the victory so weakened Egypt that it slid into terminal decline, along with every surrounding civilization.

But modern archaeology tells a more unsettling story, and it is the one that matters for us.

The Sea Peoples were not the cause.

They were a symptom. Cline’s central argument is that the collapse was a systems failure, a cascade of interconnected shocks hitting a system too integrated to absorb them:

• A prolonged megadrought, roughly three centuries of drying across the eastern Mediterranean, documented in the paleoclimate record (full video here for the curious minds)

• Famine following the drought, recorded in desperate clay tablets from the trading city of Ugarit begging allies for grain

• An “earthquake storm,” a rapid sequence of major earthquakes striking Mediterranean cities between 1225 and 1175 BC

• Mass migration, as climate refugees, the Sea Peoples among them, moved in search of food and land, overwhelming the societies they reached

• And underneath all of it, the fatal variable: the collapse of the trade network itself. When one node failed, the others followed, because none could survive alone.

Any one of these shocks, the societies could have survived. Cline is explicit about this.

-Drought alone, no. 🤯

-Earthquakes alone, no. 🤯

-Raiders alone, no. 🤯

But three or four striking in quick succession, hitting an economy whose every part depended on every other part, produced a ∞ positive feedback loop ∞ of failure that no kingdom could escape.

The interconnection that created the wealth is what transmitted the collapse.

The palaces burned. The trade routes went silent. And then something happened that should stop every person who casually wishes for the end of the current order.

The world forgot how to write.

III. The Thousand-Year Dark Age 💀

When the Bronze Age system collapsed, it did not transition into a new and better arrangement. It fell into what scholars call the first Dark Age.

The Mycenaean civilization, the world of the Greeks, simply ceased to exist. The sophisticated writing system they used, known as Linear B, was lost so completely that Greece became illiterate for roughly four hundred years. An entire civilization forgot how to read and write, because writing had been a tool of the palace administration, and when the palaces burned, the skill died with them.

Monumental architecture stopped.

Long-distance trade evaporated. Populations collapsed. The great cosmopolitan cities shrank into scattered villages. Technology regressed. The vibrant, connected, wealthy world of the Late Bronze Age was replaced by isolated feudal communities of people too busy surviving to build, to write, to invent, or to progress.

This is the world that Homer would later describe in the Odyssey, composed centuries after the collapse, looking back at a golden age that had already become legend. The Trojan War, the voyages of Odysseus, the fall of the great palaces, these were the dim memories of the world that ended in 1177 BC, half-remembered by a civilization that had lost the ability to record its own history and was only beginning, centuries later, to climb back out.

The recovery took a thousand years.

It was not until the rise of Classical Greece, around 500 BC, that the Mediterranean world recovered the population, the literacy, the trade networks, and the cultural sophistication it had possessed before the collapse.

A thousand years. Not of transition. Of darkness. Of survival replacing progress as the organizing principle of human life.

That is the actual historical precedent for the collapse of a trade-based, sea-controlling, globalized economic empire.

IV. The Modern Triangle: Why This Is Not Just a Metaphor 📉

I am not making a loose analogy. The structural pressures on the current order rhyme with the Bronze Age with uncomfortable precision. I think of it as a triangle of converging crises pressing on the developed world.

The demographic crisis. Every developed economy is aging and shrinking. Birth rates across Europe, Japan, Korea, and increasingly China have fallen well below replacement. The societies that built and maintain the current order are running out of the young people required to sustain it. This is the slow drought of our era, a structural drying that no policy has reversed.

The migration crisis. As with the Bronze Age, demographic and climate pressure is producing mass movement of people. The developed world is simultaneously dependent on migration to offset its demographic collapse and being destabilized politically by it. The Sea Peoples were climate and famine refugees moving into a weakened system. The parallel is not comfortable, but it is real.

The debt crisis. The United States carries a national debt now past $38 trillion. The developed world as a whole has borrowed against a future of growth that its own demography may not deliver. This is the structural fragility underneath the system, the equivalent of an economy so interconnected and so leveraged that a shock in one node cascades through all of them.

And against this triangle, new players are rising into the space, exactly as the Philistines, Phoenicians, and Israelites rose into the vacuum left by the fallen Bronze Age empires. The BRICS bloc. China’s Belt and Road. Parallel financial infrastructure designed to route around the dollar. A multipolar world assembling itself in the margins of the old order.

Here is what history teaches that the celebrants of multipolarity forget. The smaller groups that rose after the Bronze Age collapse did not inherit a functioning system. They inherited rubble. Cline notes that they only got their chance because the great powers had destroyed themselves, and what they rose into was not prosperity, it was the long darkness. It took a thousand years before anything as sophisticated as what was lost returned.

V. Why You Should Not Wish for the Collapse 🕊️

Zombies, Aliens, etc, from Hollywood to animes to Netflix, most of the past decade fictions have been about the collapse of our current civilization…

I am French. I was raised in Europe, built my first company in Asia, and moved to the United States as an adult by choice. I have no nationalist attachment to American primacy. I am capable of a long list of criticisms of how the United States has used its power.

And yet.

• The lesson of 1177 BC is not that empires are good. It is that the collapse of the system that underwrites global trade is not a transition to something better. It is a fall into something far worse, and it lasts far longer than anyone living through the beginning of it can imagine.

• The American order, whatever its sins, currently does what the Bronze Age trade network did. It keeps the sea lanes open. It maintains the reserve currency that lets global trade clear. It underwrites the interconnection that makes the modern economy of abundance possible. When people wish for its end, they are wishing, whether they understand it or not, for the end of the system that keeps the ships moving and the network intact.

The question is not whether the American empire is perfect. It is not.

The question is whether the thing that replaces a collapsed thalassocracy is a fairer world or a darker one.

History has answered that question once already. It answered with a thousand years of silence.

The task of our generation is not to cheer the collapse.

It is to do the harder thing: to reform, adapt, and rebuild the system so that it evolves rather than shatters. To be Yu the Great building canals, not the Sea Peoples burning palaces.

The families and founders in our network who are funding vital energy, resilient supply chains, sovereign infrastructure, and the physical foundations of the next economy are not betting against the system.

They are trying to make sure the transition, when it comes, is an evolution and not a collapse.

Because the alternative is not a better empire.

The alternative is the dark.

VI. Bref, I Moved to America, Wish Me Luck! + 🎬

Which brings me to something personal, and to the next film in this series.

While I was writing this piece about a collapsing trade empire, I was doing something that a lot of people told me was insane:

I was moving to the United States.

Not visiting. Not opening an office. Moving. In the exact season when celebrities are filming their departure announcements, when the debt clock reads $38 trillion, when half the commentary class has already written the obituary of the American century.

In 2026, we moved in to a new place in San Francisco, Bay Area.

I have made this bet before, on two other continents, and both times the logic was the same. Europe gave me an inheritance, education and I said why not to a plane ticket. Asia gave me no permission and I built anyway, because a handful of people opened a door instead of guarding it. And now America, at the exact moment the room is emptying.

Bref, I moved to America. The next episode of The Quiet Money.

Twelve minutes on why the people leaving are reacting to how a country feels, while the capital arriving is responding to what a country produces. On the numbers nobody puts in the headlines: the share of the world’s innovation capital that still lands here, the family offices multiplying rather than fleeing, the financialized economy that dwarfs the physical one and what that actually means for where the returns are.

And on the argument at the heart of everything above.

If you believe the Bronze Age lesson, that the collapse of a trade empire is not a transition but a fall, then the correct response is not to run. It is to position yourself inside the system that is being rebuilt, early, while the field is clearing and everyone else is walking out.

The Sea Peoples burned the palaces because they had nowhere else to go.

I got on a plane because there was somewhere to build myself anew.

Meanwhile is the hottest summer in recorded history….

I mean….. So far.

El Niño is back. June 2026 is breaking records across three continents. The climate models we feared are arriving ahead of schedule.

The Mediterranean is on fire. The monsoons and water cycles are failing all around the world. The glaciers are not coming back.

You do not need to read a report from IPCC anymore. You can feel it. The heat on your skin. The flood on the news that looks like the one from last month, and the month before, and the month before that.

This is not a policy debate anymore. This is the sweat on your T-shirts, this is physics.

And yet.

The world has invested $2.8 trillion into artificial intelligence so far with most of it last 24 months.

Two point eight trillion dollars… For chatbots. For cute image generators. For AI girlfriends. For language models that hallucinate 50% of facts and consume more electricity than entire nations.

Meanwhile, the infrastructure we actually need to survive (aircons / clean water) costs a fraction of that.

Heatwave-adapted buildings. Flood-resilient cities. Dispatchable clean energy. Water systems that can handle what is coming. Regenerative agriculture that rebuilds soil fertility amidst high temperature changes. Coastal infrastructure that does not collapse when the storm surge arrives.

We do not need trillions. We need billions.

A few billion, deployed intelligently, to the founders who are building the adaptation economy. The technologies exist. The engineering is proven. The bottleneck is capital allocation.

For our cute image generations and AI girlfriends, data centers worldwide are consuming more electricity than France and using as much clean water as Switzerland.

The hyperscalers are building their own power plants. The grid interconnection queue is five years deep. AI is not saving us. AI is competing with us for the same scarce electrons and extremely scarce fresh water.

Have we all become mad?

This is also, for some reason, the hottest tech pre-IPO summer in recorded history.

SpaceX is preparing to go public. Anthropic is circling a $100B+ valuation. Agility Robotics announced a $2.5 billion SPAC on Tuesday. NuCube Energy announced theirs on Wednesday. Bloom Energy is up 1,300% in twelve months. The billionaires are building their own power plants because the grid cannot keep up with AI.

I have conflicted feelings about all of this.

In 2021, I wrote a book called The Adaptive Economy. The thesis was simple: capital needed to adapt to three converging forces. Environmental breakdown. Geopolitical fragmentation. Technological acceleration. I argued that the families and institutions that understood this convergence first would be the ones to survive and thrive.

I called it adaptation capitalism before I called it the Quiet Renaissance.

Now we are at the heart of it.

The environmental breakdown is here. The geopolitical fragmentation is here. The technological acceleration is here, faster than any of us predicted. AI agents are talking to each other. Humanoid robots are shipping from factories. Nuclear is back. Fusion is funded. Data centers are consuming more electricity than entire nations.

Capital has never created more riches. Technology has never changed our workforce so fast. We are truly entering Star Wars now.

I was right. And I am not sure how to feel about it.

Because the same forces that are minting billionaires are also breaking the planet. The same AI that is creating unprecedented productivity is also displacing millions of workers.

The same capital that is funding the Renaissance is also accelerating the crisis that made it necessary.

This is the paradox of our moment.

The families I work with understand this. They are not naive optimists. They are not doomers. They are pragmatists with generational time horizons. They know that the world is changing whether they participate or not. They have chosen to participate. Not because it feels good, but because the alternative is worse.

This is why we built WeTheAtlas.

To connect the founders building the adaptation economy with the family offices and angel investors who understand what is at stake. To give them the room. To give them the capital. To help them scale before the window closes.

The problem is now visible. You can touch it. You can feel it in the heat. The technologies are there. The money is there. What was missing was the bridge.

The proof points are stacking too fast to ignore. The exits are arriving. The thesis is being validated in public markets.

PART II: HAVE WE ALL BECOME MAD?

As I write this, France is burying its dead.

1,000 excess deaths in five days. 85% of them over 65. People who survived wars and recessions, dying alone in apartments because the building has no air conditioning and the grid cannot handle the load.

This is not a future scenario. This is June 2026.

The Louvre closed early because the building cannot cope with the heat. The Eiffel Tower shut down. Train tracks buckled. And in the Ile-de-France region, elderly people died at home because no one thought to install a simple heat pump that plugs into a standard outlet and takes 30 minutes to set up.

France has 25% household air conditioning penetration. Germany: 3%. The UK: 5%.

In 2003, 15,000 French citizens died in a single heatwave. The government promised it would never happen again. It is happening again. Right now. As you read this.

What Is Coming…

The World Health Organization projects 250,000 additional deaths per year from climate change between 2030 and 2050. Undernutrition. Malaria. Diarrhea. Heat stress.

That is the conservative estimate.

The Lancet projects heat-related deaths will increase 370% by 2050. That is a 4.7-fold increase from today. Nearly five times more people dying from heat alone.

If mitigation and adaptation measures are not taken, the death toll could reach 24 million per year by mid-century.

Over the past four years, more than 200,000 people have died from heat across Europe. Most of those deaths were preventable. The WHO says Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average.

Ten times more people are projected to die from heat in poor countries than in rich countries by 2050. Fifteen times more in Faisalabad, Pakistan than in Phoenix, Arizona. The inequality is not accidental. It is the direct result of where capital flows.

The Water Crisis No One Is Pricing

The UN has declared the world has entered “global water bankruptcy.” Not water stress. Not water crisis. Bankruptcy. Irreversible damage to natural water systems.

The numbers:

• 2.2 billion people currently lack access to safely managed drinking water

• 700 million people projected to be displaced by water scarcity by 2030

• 5 billion people will face at least one month of water shortage by 2050

• By 2030, global freshwater demand will outstrip supply by 40%

• 6.5 billion people could face severe water scarcity by 2050 under current trajectories

Three billion people and more than half of global food production are concentrated in areas where water storage is already declining. The world will need to produce 56% more food calories by 2050 to feed a projected population of 10 billion.

Water infrastructure requires $6.7 trillion by 2030. $22.6 trillion by 2050.

The global water sector currently attracts less than 2% of public spending.

Where The Capital Is Actually Going

Meanwhile, the AI companion market was valued at $37 billion in 2025. Projected to reach $552 billion by 2035.

The AI girlfriend app market alone: $2.8 billion in 2025. Growing at 17% annually.

500 million people globally self-identify as experiencing chronic loneliness. The market response: AI girlfriends. AI boyfriends. Virtual companions that simulate human connection so people can spend $47 per month on emotional dependency while the planet burns.

• This is not an argument against AI. This is an argument about priorities.

• $2 trillion is flowing into AI this year. Data centers now consume more electricity than France. For chatbots. For image generators. For virtual companions. For entertainment.

• $26 billion flows to climate adaptation annually. The gap is 12 to 14 times what is needed.

The AI girlfriend market alone is larger than international public adaptation finance to developing countries.

🥵 Have we all become (heat) mad?

The Math

• $2 trillion for AI in 2026. $26 billion for climate adaptation. 77:1 ratio.

• 250,000 additional deaths per year by 2030. 5 billion people facing water scarcity by 2050. 700 million climate refugees by 2030.

The capital exists. The technology exists. The deployment is the bottleneck.

Maybe The Answer

The answer is not to stop building AI. The answer is to fund the other side of the portfolio with the same urgency.

We do not need trillions for adaptation. We need billions. A few hundred billion, deployed intelligently, to infrastructure that keeps humans alive in a world that is already 1.5°C warmer.

Heat pumps that install in 30 minutes. Wastewater systems that turn pollution into fertilizer. Thermal storage that makes solar dispatchable. Nuclear microreactors that power communities for 30 years without moving parts.

The technology exists. The founders exist. The families who understand this are the ones we work with.

Gradient has been in the Atlas Coalition since 2022. We have watched them go from prototype to commercial deployment. 30 million French homes could be adapted with this technology. 19 million German households. 28 million in the UK. No renovation. No plumber. No electrician. The elderly are dying because buildings are not adapted. The technology exists. The deployment is the bottleneck.

That is one answer. Here is the other.

On Tuesday, Agility Robotics announced a $2.5 billion SPAC with Churchill Capital XI.

On Wednesday, NuCube Energy announced a (estimated $500m-1B+) SPAC with Launch Two Acquisition Corp.

This is not 2021. The NFTs are gone. The electric vehicle vaporware is gone. What remains is infrastructure.

The companies going public via SPAC in 2026 are the infrastructure layer of the AI economy: nuclear reactors, humanoid robots, thermal batteries, fusion startups. The companies solving the bottleneck that $2 trillion in AI spending created.

The exit window just opened. The families who funded the builders are about to get paid.

Agility Robotics

Merging with Churchill Capital XI at a $2.5 billion valuation, a 19% premium over their last private round. $620 million in gross proceeds. $200 million PIPE led by Foxconn. Ticker: AGLT. They have nearly 100 Digit robots deployed commercially, $300 million in multi-year orders for Digit v5, and customers including Amazon, Toyota Manufacturing Canada, GXO, and Mercado Libre. The backers include Amazon, NVIDIA, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Foxconn, and DCVC.

Michael Klein, who is sponsoring this SPAC, previously brought Oklo and Lucid public through the same vehicle. Oklo ran 100x. Rob Walton backed early. Same sponsor, same playbook.

NuCube Energy

Nucube is merging with Launch Two Acquisition Corp. They build high-temperature modular microreactors: 15 MW of power for up to 30 years, no moving parts, TRISO fuel, first deployment target 2029. The grid cannot deliver what the AI economy demands. NuCube is one answer.

NuCube presented on our stage at , then SF 2025. Then again at NYC 2025. Then again at the USS Hornet in April 2026.

In February 2026, Rob Walton (Walmart family, yes!) invested in their $13 million round. In April, the DOE selected NuCube for the Launch Pad USA program, one of 11 companies nationally. On June 25, 2026, they announced their SPAC.

In 2025 when we presented Nucube to our investor network and facilitated Zoom calls with 10+ family offices, at first, no one wrote any checks.

But we gave Cristian Rabiti the stage, 3 times in fact. (Watch him on our stage below)

Many US and APAC family offices & angel investors who would never have seen him otherwise.

Rob Walton found him. The DOE found him. Nasdaq will find him. That is what the network is for.

And two more are coming.

The carbon transformation company we introduced to CMA CGM in 2024, is preparing for a 2027 public offering. $645 million raised. AirPlant One now operational, producing commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel from CO2 and water. CMA CGM, TPG Rise, Breakthrough Energy, and Alaska Airlines on the cap table. Atlas facilitated a multi million dollars introduction that became part of their $645 million round. Nicholas Flanders, the CEO, spoke at our USS Hornet summit in April. The SPAC or direct listing is now a matter of timing, not if.

The thesis is straightforward. Whoever solves dispatchable, deployable, cheap energy wins the AI infrastructure race. The exit pathway is now open.

We have been doing this for five years. The pattern keeps repeating. NuCube presented at SF 2025, Rob Walton invested in February 2026, the DOE selected them in April, SPAC announced in June.

III. THE ADAPTATION PORTFOLIO

The SPACs are the headlines. But the quiet work is adaptation.

Every industrial revolution in history has had three layers. A new energy. A new communication. A new transportation.

When all three shift at once, you get a Renaissance…

The First Industrial Revolution: coal, telegraph, railway. The Second Industrial Revolution: electricity, telephone, automobile. The Digital Revolution: the grid, the internet, global logistics. The Quiet Renaissance: all three layers are being reinvented, right now, at the same time.

The new energy layer is solar at near-zero marginal cost, 120+ nuclear reactor designs in development, thermal storage making solar dispatchable 24/7, geothermal unlocking baseload anywhere on earth. Examples: Rob Walton invested in NuCube. Sam Altman backed Exowatt and Helion. Microsoft reopened Three Mile Island. Google signed the largest corporate nuclear PPA in history.

The new communication layer is AI and the Internet of Things no longer as tools we operate, but as systems that communicate with each other and make decisions themselves. Machines coordinating with machines, without a human in the loop. Agents talking to agents. Systems optimizing systems.

The new transportation layer is self-driving utility, humanoid robots in warehouses, robotics going where humans cannot, space as frontier. Figure AI produces one humanoid every 90 minutes. Example: Agility just announced a $2.5 billion SPAC.

But there is another side to this portfolio. The side that keeps humans alive while the Renaissance unfolds.

We recently participated in Exowatt.

While data centers scramble for power, Exowatt is solving the intermittency problem. They have raised $140 million in under two years. 90+ gigawatt-hours of demand backlog. Target: 1 cent per kilowatt-hour, 90% cheaper than grid rates. Sam Altman, a16z, Felicis, MVP Ventures on the cap table. Their P3 system captures solar energy and stores it as heat in ceramic and rock materials at 1,200 degrees Celsius. Steam turbines convert that heat to electricity on demand, day or night. The holy grail of solar: baseload power without intermittency. The AI economy needs power. Exowatt delivers it without burning the planet.

We recently participated in Airbuild.

While cities struggle with aging water systems, Airbuild is turning waste into value. Their BioPod system uses microalgae to treat wastewater, capture carbon, and produce certified biofertilizer. Active deployment in Green River, Utah: 4.5 million gallons annual treatment capacity, over 90% nutrient removal for nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals. Farmers who use their biofertilizer reduce synthetic fertilizer dependency by 20 to 40%. Over 16,000 tons of carbon offset contracted. The coming water crisis is not hypothetical. Airbuild is building the decentralized infrastructure to address it.

Gradient Comfort has been in the Atlas Coalition since 2022. As I write this, 1,000 people have died in France from the current heatwave. 85% of them were over 65. Most died at home, in buildings without air conditioning.

Gradient’s technology could have saved many of those lives.

They have raised $49.5 million. Their window heat pump installs in under 30 minutes. No plumbing. No electrical upgrades. No renovation. Standard 120V outlet. 95% carbon reduction versus traditional HVAC. TIME named it one of the Best Inventions of 2022.

France has 30 million homes (only 24% equipped with aircons). Germany has 19 million households (only 4% equipped with aircons). The UK has 28 million (only 3% equipped with aircons).

Gradient’s technology could adapt millions of them to survive heatwaves without the years-long renovation cycles that traditional heat pumps require. The elderly are dying because buildings are not adapted. The technology exists. The deployment is the bottleneck.

This is the other side of the portfolio. Not the SPACs. Not the unicorns.

The infrastructure that lets humans survive what the unicorns are doing to the planet.

$2 trillion for AI. $26 billion for adaptation. We are not saying stop building AI. We are saying: fund the other side with the same conviction.

Energy. Water. Heat resilience. These are not ESG talking points. They are infrastructure requirements for a world that is already 1.5 degrees warmer.

IV. THE QUIET RENAISSANCE VIEW

At the start of this letter, I asked: have we all become mad?

$2+ trillion flowing into AI. Meanwhile only $26 billion flowing into climate adaptation. Data centers consuming more power than France. And the glaciers are gone forever now.

The madness is real. But so is the answer.

• The same week that global temperatures broke records, two companies I have followed for years announced multi-billion dollars exits.

• The same week that 1,000 people died in France from heat, a company that has been in our coalition since 2022 shipped heat pumps that could have saved them.

• The same week that the UN declared global water bankruptcy, a startup we invested in captured 16,000 tons of carbon while cleaning wastewater in Utah.

This is the paradox of the Quiet Renaissance. The forces creating unprecedented wealth are the same forces breaking the old world. The families funding the future are also funding the transition that makes the future necessary.

I do not have clean answers for this. Neither do the principals I work with. What we share is a conviction that sitting out is not an option. That the capital will flow somewhere. That it is better to direct it toward infrastructure, energy, and resilience than to let it chase the next chatbot.

The families in our network are not waiting for the IPO headlines. They are getting in before them.

For as long as you have known me, I have done this one way: I write. The Adaptive Economy since 2021 has always been words on a page, because that is where I am comfortable. I am, by nature, camera shy. Putting myself on screen is close to the last thing I would volunteer to do.

This week we did it anyway.

When SpaceX went public on Friday, I knew the moment was too important to leave to a written piece alone. So with Pahn’s team and my team, we decided to try something this newsletter has never done: a short filmed deep-dive. A real one.

Cinematic, scripted, shot at my home studio, edited finishings with my own hands.

We did the whole thing, concept to finished cut, in about twenty-four hours. Anyone who makes video for a living will tell you that is not normal. It was intense, slightly mad, and one of the more rewarding things I have done in a while.

I am genuinely proud of what we made, and a little nervous to share it, which I have learned usually means it is worth sharing.

So this is the first episode of a new series, The Quiet Money. What you would normally read, you can now also watch. The essay below is the written version. The video is the same argument, told the way only film can tell it.

I. What just happened?

On June 12, SpaceX listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX. It priced at 135 dollars, opened at 150, and closed near 161, up nineteen percent on day one. That put the company above two trillion dollars and raised roughly seventy-five billion in a single offering.

The largest IPO in the history of capitalism. Bigger than Aramco. Bigger than Alibaba (my previous in GetLinks, the company I co-founded).

Every news headline framed it as a beginning.

For many of my family offices clients and mysrlf, it is a finish line.

The people who you heard got rich on Friday, actually got rich in 2015, in 2018, in 2021, in the private rounds and the secondary transactions that happened years before a public (retail) investor could buy a single share.

SpaceX was cash-flow positive a decade ago and carried eighteen billion in revenue before it ever rang the bell.

By the time it reached you, it had already multiplied hundreds of times (yes 100X+ for some early investors!) in private hands.

The IPO was not the opportunity. The IPO was the exit.

And the investors quietly selling into the public’s enthusiasm is the same circle I have spent five years working with sitting with at my conferences:

The family offices you can’t name, the multi-generational UHNWIs you never get a chance to meet.

What I call, The Quiet Money.

II. Money is whatever the dominant empire says it is.

Zoom out, because this is not really a story about a rocket company.

It is a story about defining what is valuable in our world, and at what price.

Money has never been fixed. It is whatever the dominant empire of an era decides it is, and every time the empire changes, the definition of wealth changes with it.

The families who see the shift early compound. The families who miss it are diluted, quietly, generation after generation.

• The First Empire was land. Rome, the pharaohs, the feudal kingdoms.

• The Second Empire was industry: steam, steel, rail, oil. The Rothschilds and Rockefellers were not better farmers. They understood that wealth had moved into machines, and they moved first.

• The Third Empire was global maritime trade & finance. In 1971 the dollar left gold, money became paper and then pixels, and wealth became stocks, bonds, real estate, pensions. This is the empire your parents were raised in.

Buy the S&P500 index. Buy a house. Trust the plan. It worked, for a while, because the system needed your participation.

III. The Fourth Empire is being built, “quietly”.

The Fourth Empire is under construction right now. Its territory is not land, not factories, not paper. It is energy, compute, robotics, and orbit: the physical infrastructure of intelligence.

And here is the feature that defines it:

• The Third Empire let you in through mobilizing most of the capital funding its economy and driving GDP growth through the stock market.

• The Fourth Empire, so far, does not.

Value is created quietly, privately for years, with participation of large family offices, only.

…And only when these early investors decide that they want their exit, then you start getting retail access to these trillion dollars category defining companies.

SpaceX stayed private for twenty-four years. Anthropic, the new nuclear companies, the robotics platforms, the data-center build-out that now consumes the power of entire nations: almost none of it sits on the exchange your pension fund buys.

The vital industries shaping the next 1000 multi-millionaires are being financed now, where the public isn’t invited (and it’s kinda normal).

We saw it on our own stage this year, when a seed-stage nuclear company (Nucube) closed funding from the family office behind Walmart.

Deals like that do not happen on the open market.

They happen quietly at round tables most humans are not invited to.

IV. The race you were never told about.

That table has a name: private secondaries. When a company stays private for two decades, early holders eventually need liquidity, and they sell in negotiated transactions to whoever has access. Only UHNWIs & the wealthiest dynasties on earth get a racing ticket, usually because a ticket is extremely expensive (think minimum $10m entry starting price kind of ticket).

For most of history, you needed to be a family office (accredited with $100 million dollars of cash sitting on bank accounts) to even get a seat at this table. That is the number we are trying to change.

While the public news argued about inflation and interest rates, this circle of family offices & UHNWIs was accumulating the equity of the Third and Fourth Empire at private prices for centuries. They were not gambling.

They were accumulating even more private wealth. More than anything the traditional stock market could offer you.

This is something that took me 25 years to understand, and another 10 years to start entering myself.

And the moment I did, about 3 years ago, the first thing I wanted to do was figure out how to bring people in with me so together, we could get a seats a these tables.

Energy. Compute. Robotics. Space. The vital backbone industries of the 21st century.

Here is the part I have wrestled with. For most of these five years, all I could do was describe the room from inside it. You could read about the door. You could not walk through it.

And when I discovered that, a few years ago, I’ve found that quite unfair.

It was not the only one. It was not the largest one the private market has seen in 2026. And that scares me.

This has become the rhythm of the AI capital cycle: announcements of rounds so large they barely register as news anymore.

• Anthropic at $900 billion valuation.

• OpenAI filing a confidential S-1 at $1 trillion.

• SpaceX listing on Nasdaq in June at $1.75 trillion.

Three companies. Combined valuation: $3.65 trillion. More than the GDP of Germany.

4 years ago, I signed up as an investor in Climate Tech, a movement to mobilize capital into innovations that would save the planet. And somehow now the AI hype is hard to avoid, even for myself, and I feel kind of bad about it. All this capital, 2.7 trillion dollars last 12 months alone went to AI, and for what? What could have we done with this if it was funnelled to climate tech?

I want to be clear: I am not writing this as a skeptic of AI. I am writing it as someone who has spent the past 4 years watching capital flow into the technologies that shape civilization, someone who believes this particular AI cycle deserves an honest accounting.

Because last week, while the wire transfers to Anthropic were clearing, two other major things - for the century? - happened.

The Pope issued a 43,000-word encyclical calling for the disarming of artificial intelligence.

And meanwhile, Uber’s CTO quietly admitted his company had burned through its entire 2026 AI budget in four months.

Only one of those stories made the front page. The other is the one that matters more.

I. The Hype: $25 Million Checks and the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy ⚡

Last week, I witnessed a single family office wiring $25 million into a seller of Anthropic shares. And we’ve got other family offices in discussion for even larger checks for the same deal.

Let me show you how the capital cycle works in practice: Not in Wall Street, on Whatsapp.

Not because it has done a deep analysis of the unit economics, the token costs, or the actual enterprise adoption curves.

Just because:

1. No investment committee in the world gets fired for backing OpenAI, Anthropic, or SpaceX.

2. There is a lot of money (dry powder) sitting on bank accounts right now. A LOT. And the economy needs it to go somewhere…

3. This is the self-fulfilling prophecy of the American AI stack- and it is the most important and least discussed dynamic in the current cycle.

The logic runs like this:

• The United States has declared AI its sovereign industrial priority.

• The CHIPS Act, the AI Action Plan, the $800 million DOE grants for small modular reactors to power data centers, these are not tech investments, they are strategic declarations.

• Family offices in the US, in Singapore, Private Equity funds in Europe, all face the same calculus: if you are not in the American AI stack, you are not in the future: Your LPs

2026: Not the AGI, But The $3.65 Trillion Moment.

SpaceX is targeting a $1.75 trillion valuation and a $75 billion raise. OpenAI is filing a confidential S-1 targeting a September listing at $852 billion to $1 trillion — which at the upper end would be the largest technology public offering in history. Anthropic is raising at a $900 billion valuation and targeting an October listing.

The three IPOs together could demand north of $200 billion from public markets. The entire US IPO market raised just $45 billion in all of 2025.

There is an estimated $8 trillion sitting in U.S. money market funds. SpaceX’s $75 billion raise represents roughly 1% of that. Institutional money has spent years accessing AI via proxy — buying Nvidia for chip exposure, Microsoft for its OpenAI stake. The moment pure-play labs are publicly available, that demand unlocks.

This is not bubble logic. This is momentum logic. And momentum logic is self-validating until it is not. The $25 million checks keep clearing because the $25 million checks keep clearing. No one gets fired for backing the biggest names. Everyone gets fired for missing them.

The Pope noticed.

II. The Pope Got Scared… Yet, He May Be Creating Exactly What He Fears 🔮

On May 25, 2026, Pope Leo XIV stood in Vatican City and personally presented Magnifica Humanitas — “Magnificent Humanity” — the first papal encyclical in history dedicated to artificial intelligence, signed on the same day that Rerum Novarum was released 135 years previously.

Pope Leo XIV called for the “disarming” of artificial intelligence, warning against “a race for ever more powerful algorithms and larger datasets” driven by “the desire to secure geopolitical or commercial dominance.”

Echoing the worker-centered concerns of Rerum Novarum, he warned that rapid automation could displace workers and reshape labor markets in ways that would risk leaving many in forced inactivity, undermining both human dignity and social stability.

The Vatican launch included remarks by the co-founder of Anthropic — which is currently locked in a legal battle with the Trump administration over access to its AI technology. The Vatican decided to involve Anthropic as part of its decade-long effort to engage Silicon Valley in dialogue.

And yet in his text,

🦸🏻‍♂️ Pope Leo repeatedly blasted the concentration of power and data in the hands of so few people in the private sector as a danger.

Anthropic sat on the stage as the Pope warned against companies like Anthropic (lol yeah for real). That detail tells you everything about where we are.

When the Church issues a formal doctrine on AI, it confirms to every allocator in the world that AI is the defining civilizational technology of our era. That it requires the same moral and regulatory architecture as the industrial revolution, nuclear power, or the printing press. That it is not a product category but an epochal shift.

That confirmation is not a deterrent for capital. It is a green light.

The IPOs will price. The valuation multiples will hold or exceed their targets. Not despite the papal encyclical, but partially because of it.

When the most powerful religious institution in human history names your industry as the central moral challenge of the age, you have already won the narrative war.

Basically, the self-fulfilling prophecy of the American AI capital stack just got a 43,000-word endorsement from Rome.

🔮 So my forecast is that the AI bubble will not burst before at least mid 2027.

III. The Math That Nobody Is Talking About 💰

Here is where I want to slow down. Because the hype is real, but the math is not.

70% of enterprise AI agent projects will be shut down by the end of 2027…

For 77% of jobs: humans are still cheaper. The MIT study said it in 2018. The Uber CTO confirmed it in 2026.

🌬️ The architecture that closes financially for the next 15–20 years is not AI replacing humans.

• Uber’s CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga told The Information his company had burned through its entire 2026 AI coding budget in four months. “I’m back to the drawing board,” Naga said, “because the budget I thought I would need is blown away already.”

• Bryan Catanzaro, VP of Applied Deep Learning Research at Nvidia — the $5+ trillion company making the chips powering much of the AI industry — told Axios “for my team, the cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees.”

Read that again. The VP of Applied Deep Learning Research at Nvidia, the company that profits most from AI compute spending, is saying that compute already costs more than the people it is supposed to replace.

The replacement narrative is not an economics argument. It is a marketing one. The only architecture that closes financially today is human + AI together.

• Gartner is now forecasting that more than 40% of enterprise AI agent projects will be shut down by the end of 2027, citing escalating costs and unclear business value.

• A 2018 MIT study suggested that AI automation is economically viable in only about 23% of jobs. Ultimately, humans are still cheaper in the remaining 77% cases.

• Some power users are racking up monthly token bills north of $150,000. “I probably spend more on Claude than my salary,” one software engineer in Stockholm told the New York Times.

The numbers get stranger. Within Meta, one employee created a dashboard called “Claudeonomics” so teams could see who generated the greatest AI usage, turning consumption into a competitive metric.

This is not productivity. This is performative consumption.

The companies that replaced humans with AI agents are not finding the savings they modeled. Short-sighted enterprises that have replaced humans with AI could find themselves paying five times as much to maintain the tech. The only winners in this scenario are the tech overlords.

Goldman Sachs forecasted that agentic AI could drive a 24-fold increase in token consumption by 2030, reaching 120 quadrillion tokens per month 🤮.

But Gartner found that cheaper tokens won’t translate to cheaper enterprise AI because agentic models require far more tokens per task than standard models, and increased consumption can outpace falling unit costs. This is kind of important, if you are still reading.

The pitch for enterprise AI was relentless cost reduction. The reality is: the costs moved, they did not disappear. They moved from human payroll to compute infrastructure. And compute infrastructure, at the token consumption rates the agents require, already exceeds the cost of the humans it was supposed to replace.

The Pope is worried about displacement. The CFOs are worried about the invoice.

They are both, in different ways, very right.

IV. The Only Way Forward: Human-in-the-Loop as the Economic Constraint + 🌏 Save the planet (…lol?)

Here is the conclusion the data is forcing not as a moral argument, but as a cost argument.

In short: “bro, don’t fire everyone for a few AI agents, just keep paying a few employees and give them Claude to doublecharge their work productivity.”

The AI-only model does not close financially at current token and electricity costs.

Full AI agent deployment, autonomous systems running 24/7, handling tasks end-to-end without human oversight, consumes tokens at a rate that, in most enterprise applications, exceeds the fully-loaded cost of the human workforce it replaces. This is not a transitional problem waiting for better hardware.

By 2030, inference costs are expected to fall nearly 90% — but aggregate consumption will rise so fast that total enterprise AI costs will continue to climb regardless of per-token price reductions.

The economic equilibrium, for the next fifteen to twenty years, is human-in-the-loop.

Not because humans are better than AI at most tasks.

Not because the 🦸🏻‍♂️ Pope said so.

Because the compute and electricity costs of running fully autonomous agents at scale do not clear the basic financial test of replacing a human worker.

The companies that will extract real value from AI in this cycle are not the ones replacing humans with agents. They are the ones building systems where AI handles the volume and humans handle the judgment. Where AI compresses the research and humans make the call. Where AI generates the output and humans own the decision.

This is not a consolation prize for humanity. It is the architecture that closes financially.

And it points to a new metric the financial world has not yet priced: compute credits.

We have spent the last decade building carbon credit markets, financial instruments that assign a cost to the externality of carbon emissions, forcing it onto balance sheets where it had previously been invisible.

The externality that the current AI cycle is generating is compute consumption, measured in tokens, expressed in electricity, ultimately constrained by the same energy infrastructure that every other industrial system runs on.

Carbon credits forced carbon costs onto balance sheets. Compute credits, a framework that accounts for the true energy cost of token consumption, would force the same reckoning onto the AI economy.

The Pope is asking for a more humane AI. The market is about to ask for a more energy-efficient one.

At the end of the day I tell you what. I have a feeling that the Anthropic, the Nvidia, the Google, bref, the Magnificent 7 will make their money through infrastructure & datacenters rentals.

The big questions is, how many of these small, super young AI agents startups funded last 24 months will exist in 10 years. Less than 5%? Less than 1%?

Only God knows.

Jeff Bezos built the logistics backbone of the digital economy. Now he is building the AI infrastructure layer for the physical world.

Prometheus launched in November 2025. Within six months: 120+ employees recruited from OpenAI, DeepMind, Meta, Microsoft, and NVIDIA. Offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich. $16 billion raised across two rounds, among the fastest capital formation in startup history.

The thesis is vertical integration at Bezos scale:

The integrated thesis: Prometheus builds the AI brain. AWS provides the compute. Kuiper provides the connectivity. Blue Origin provides launch and orbital infrastructure. The holding company provides proprietary training data.

“The physical world is the next frontier for AI, and no one is better positioned to own that frontier than the man who already built its logistics backbone.”

Why it matters: This is not a startup. This is infrastructure. The $30 trillion manufacturing economy has no AI layer. Bezos is building it.

Key risks: No disclosed revenue or shipped product. $38B valuation implies significant future expectations. Heavy reliance on Bezos’s continued involvement.

IV. FROM OUR STAGE: Foundation & GrayMatter Robotics

At the SF Climate Week Summit on April 22, we hosted founders from across the robotics and physical AI ecosystem aboard the USS Hornet. Two stood out.

Foundation presented their Phantom humanoid weeks before securing $24 million in Pentagon contracts.

CEO Sankaet Pathak did not mince words:

“Over the course of the next 50 years, our labor workforce will shrink by 50%. Half of the people that are today building things, all the goods, services, factories, buildings, they will cease to exist in the labor market. If we don’t have industrial automation starting to replace what is going to become a quite significant deficit, we would have an implosion of the economy.”

He continued:

“The 5 trillion dollar number is actually quite conservative when you look at the existential crisis ahead of us. We have to do it now. The question is, is the technology ready for it? I think now the case is yes.”

Three weeks later, the Pentagon contracts closed. The company is now reportedly seeking $100 million at a $1 billion valuation.

GrayMatter Robotics showcased their physics-informed AI for manufacturing. Unlike humanoids designed for general tasks, GrayMatter’s robots self-program for surface treatment and finishing: sanding, polishing, coating, inspection. The pitch is simple. Traditional robots take weeks to program. GrayMatter’s machines do it in minutes.

The company has raised $70 million to date, including a $45 million Series B led by Wellington Management. In April 2026, they signed a partnership with HII, the largest shipbuilder in the United States, to deploy physical AI across sanding, grinding, and coating operations. HII’s throughput grew 14% last year with plans for another 15% in 2026.

These are the category kings quietly shaping vital industries. They do not need visibility. They need the right capital partners.

And they were on our stage before the headlines caught up.

VI. THESIS: Three Structural Tailwinds, One Trade

1. Tailwind 1: Demographic inevitability. Labor shortages in manufacturing, logistics, and elder care are structural. Goldman Sachs projects humanoids could fill 4% of the U.S. manufacturing labor gap by 2030, and that estimate was made before the current pace of AI progress.

2. Tailwind 2: The cost curve is bending. Hardware costs dropped ~40% from 2022 to 2023, with analysts projecting 15-30% annual reductions ahead. At $30K-$150K per unit, the economics already pencil in high-risk environments. Robot-as-a-Service at ~$1,000/month removes the capex barrier entirely.

3. Tailwind 3: Foundation models are the unlock. GPT-4-class models mean robots can receive natural language instructions. NVIDIA’s Project GR00T provides a generalist AI backbone used by nearly every major humanoid company. The programmability moat is collapsing.

The investment question is no longer if but who. Capital is answering by concentrating in scaled platforms (Figure, Prometheus, Agility) while the asymmetric opportunity may lie in the enabling stack: actuator manufacturers, vision sensors, simulation software, and compute infrastructure (NVIDIA).

Musk is building the compute layer. Bezos is building the industrial layer. Both are moving at scales that make traditional venture capital look quaint.

Every few decades, a small group of people gathers in a room and quietly decides what the next century will be built on. The rest of the world only notices later. I believe we are in one of those moments now.

I. A Name Change, and Why It Matters

Two weeks ago, I stood on the flight deck of the USS Hornet in San Francisco Bay and said something out loud for the first time.

40 family offices & CVCs. One aircraft carrier. The same deck that recovered the Apollo 11 crew 52 years ago.

I told them: “The feeling our generation carries, that we were born too late, that everything has already been discovered, that our job is just to optimize a finished world. That feeling is a lie. We are entering uncharted waters. We are living through something rare in human history. A new Industrial Revolution. A new Renaissance. Quietly revealing itself.”

And in that room, I realized after 140 editions since 2021, this newsletter needed a new name.

II. What “Adaptive” Got Right

When I started this newsletter two years ago, I called it The Adaptive Economy because I believed the next decade would reward the people who could adapt faster than institutions. That thesis was correct. It still is.

In the Adaptive Economy, through interviewing 100+ VC & founders in 2021, I explored over 100 vital tech solutions (energy, agritech, biotech, industrial manufacturing, construction, robotics, climate resilience) across literally every continents.

This informed a lof of the work I did the following 5 years, mapping out investment opportunities across these sectors and making friends with like minded people.

This also had let me to put together on stage some of these like minded people at our conferences in front of family offices that could back them up with capital and take their visions to the next level.

But “adaptive” is a posture. It describes how to survive. It does not describe what is being built.

And something is being built.

Something much bigger than what our parents have built… Yes, finally!

III. What I Saw That Changed the Name

While the last large push for energy infrastructure development in Europe is 50+ years old, 75 percent of all nuclear reactor construction worldwide is happening in Asia right now. 150 reactors planned in China by 2035. 120 new reactor designs in development globally.

Oklo went from a napkin to an $850 million public listing in three years. Pacific Fusion raised $900 million in a single round. Rob Walton personally took a board seat at NuCube, something a Walton has not done since the family built the logistics backbone of American retail.

Gates. Bezos. Walton. Gulf royals. Two generational families in Asia who have never given a public interview.

They are not co-investing. They are building parallel energy empires, each matched to the compute infrastructure they already own or intend to own.

This is not venture capital as usual. This is the Rockefeller and JP Morgan moment. And it is happening quietly, while the public conversation argues about quarterly earnings and political theater.

I needed a name that described what these families are actually doing.

IV. The Quiet Renaissance

The last time capital moved like this, families built railroads, funded electrification, and underwrote the birth of modern industry. Both the Industrial Revolution and the actual Renaissance were quiet for their first decade. Both looked, in their opening years, like eccentric wealthy families funding strange projects in the periphery. Both rewrote the map of power for the three centuries that followed.

We are in year three of the next one.

The name is The Quiet Renaissance.

The thesis is one sentence: Family offices are quietly financing the renaissance of vital industries.

Not ESG. Not impact investing. Not greenwashing B.S., Vital industries. Energy. Robotics. Water. Food. Manufacturing. Frontier Hardtech stuff. The industries that civilization actually runs on.

V. What Changes

This newsletter is now The Quiet Renaissance.

The thesis stays the same. The voice stays the same. The Tuesday morning delivery stays the same. The sign-off stays the same.

What changes is the lens. Every issue will now be framed around one question: Where is the quiet capital actually moving, and what is it building?

The vocabulary evolves:

• “Climate tech” becomes vital tech

• “Impact capital” becomes renaissance capital

• “Family offices and LPs” becomes renaissance families

These are not marketing words. They are precision words. They describe what is actually happening more accurately than the old terms did.

VI. What Makes a Renaissance

Every industrial revolution has three layers. A new energy. A new communication. A new transportation.

The first Industrial Revolution had coal, the telegraph, and the railway. The second had electricity, the telephone, and the automobile. The digital revolution had the grid, the internet, and global logistics.

We are not living through one of those layers. We are living through all three. At the same time. In the same decade.

• Energy. Solar at near-zero marginal cost. A nuclear renaissance with 120 new reactor designs in development. Geothermal unlocking baseload power anywhere on earth. For the first time in history, energy abundance is not a constraint. It is a design choice.

• Communication. AI and the Internet of Things are no longer tools we operate. They communicate with each other. They make decisions themselves. Machines coordinating with machines, without a human in the loop. The communication layer is no longer about connecting people. It is about autonomous intelligence.

• Transportation. Self-driving vehicles on roads. Robotics going places humans physically cannot. Space colonization as the new frontier. The transportation layer is no longer about moving humans faster. It is about extending reach beyond human limits.

Not one of those three layers. All three. Compounding. RIGHT NOW!

That is not an energy transition. That is a Renaissance. A Quiet energy, communication and transportation Renaissance.

The families writing the first checks are the ones who see the pattern. They are not betting on one technology. They are betting on the convergence.

VII. What I Learned on the Hornet

I am a millennial. There are days where I feel useless. Not professionally. Existentially.

The frontiersmen who drew the first maps of a continent. The engineers who built the railroads, the highways, the grid. The scientists who pointed at the moon and said: we are going there.

These people did not just build companies. They built civilizations.

And sometimes I think: everything has already been discovered. We inherited a finished world and our job is just to optimize it.

That feeling is a lie. But it took me a long time to understand why……..

Standing on that flight deck, looking at the people who flew in from four continents to be in that room, I understood something.

We were not born too late. We were born exactly on time. We just had to wait for the world to get complicated enough to need us to reinvent it.

VIII. The Ark (The Room)

The founders in that room have collectively raised over $5 billion. The VCs in those seats are deploying over $50 billion into the vital technologies of the next decade. The family offices and CVCs represented sit on over $500 billion waiting to fund what comes next.

Half a trillion dollars. On one ship. On one afternoon.

Thirty people across five time zones worked four months to make that day happen. My crew. They wore black badges and did not take the stage. But that ship would not have sailed without them.

March 23, 2026: Iran deploys naval assets across the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping insurers suspend coverage.

April 1, 2026: NASA confirms Artemis II. Four astronauts. First crewed lunar mission since 1972.

April 3, 2026: Brent crude hits $112. Jerome Powell warns of “energy shock” on live television. The ECB, Bank of England, and Federal Reserve pause rate decisions in the same week, citing the same variable.

April 22, 2026: Aboard the USS Hornet… the ship that recovered Apollo 11… we are convening the largest gathering of family offices investing in climate infrastructure and frontier tech that San Francisco has ever seen.

These are not separate stories. They are coordinates on the same map.

The old world is cracking. The new world is being built. And for the first time in fifty years, humanity is dreaming again… not because the future looks easy, but because the present has become impossible to sustain.

I. Humanity Dreams in Cycles

In 1865, Jules Verne published From the Earth to the Moon. His spacecraft launched from Florida. It carried three men. It was named the Columbiad. It splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. He even got the cost right, $5.4 million in 1865 dollars, roughly $12 billion adjusted, against Apollo’s $14.4 billion through the circumnavigation mission.

One hundred and four years later, on July 23, 1969, Neil Armstrong quoted Verne during Apollo 11’s live television broadcast from space: “A hundred years ago, Jules Verne wrote a book about a voyage to the Moon. His spaceship, Columbia, took off from Florida and landed in the Pacific Ocean after completing a trip to the Moon.”

Humanity dreams in cycles.

We build toward something larger than ourselves. Then we stop. Then, eventually, we remember how.

For the first time in fifty years, we are remembering.

The First Dream: 1900

Paris, April 1900. The Exposition Universelle opens. Fifty million visitors walk through the gates over seven months.

The Palace of Electricity glows with five thousand incandescent bulbs, a beacon so bright it earns Paris the name “City of Light.” Visitors ride the trottoir roulant, the world’s first moving sidewalk: three platforms at three speeds, carrying 60,000 people per hour on a 3.5-kilometer loop. 50,000,000 people came from all over the world to visit Paris that year. They watched the Lumière brothers project films on a 21-meter screen. They tour a section dedicated to “flying machines”, contraptions that would become airplanes within three years.

This was the Belle Époque. Art Nouveau. Jules Verne’s optimism made physical. The future was not a threat. It was a destination.

Then came 1914. Then 1939. The dream collapsed into trenches and firebombs.

The Second Dream: 1969

We woke up again in the Space Age.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface. On December 14, 1972, Eugene Cernan became the last man to walk on the Moon. Between those dates, twelve astronauts left footprints in lunar dust, and an entire generation believed Mars was next.

The architecture of the era reflected it. Googie diners with flying saucer roofs. TWA terminals that looked like spacecraft. Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch , finished 1965, the same year Verne’s predictions were being validated at NASA. The future was sleek, metallic, and inevitable.

Then came Vietnam. Then stagflation. Then Watergate. Then Three Mile Island.

The dream collapsed into cynicism.

The Third Dream: Never Came

For forty years, the future became something to survive, not to build.

The cultural record is unambiguous. In the 1950s, Hollywood made Destination Moon, a celebration of engineering. By 2010, the top-grossing genre was the zombie apocalypse.

The Walking Dead premiered in 2010 and ran for eleven seasons. World War Z grossed $540 million. The Hunger Games. Mad Max: Fury Road. Children of Men. The stories we told ourselves were not about building. They were about scavenging. Not about ambition. About survival.

The academic term is “the pessimistic turn.” After September 11, 2001, American cinema shifted from imagination of disaster to imagination of aftermath. The future was no longer something we reached. It was something that happened to us.

Then came 2008. Then came the decade of “software eating the world”, which mostly meant advertising technology and gig economy arbitrage. Then came COVID.

For fifty years, we optimized. We financialized. We offshored.

We turned the economy into a giant arbitrage machine. The marginal improvement replaced the moonshot. The spreadsheet replaced the blueprint.

• The last time America built a new nuclear reactor from scratch was 1996.

• The last time Europe broke ground on a major refinery was 2012.

The average age of the US electrical grid is 40 years.

We have been running on infrastructure our grandparents built.

The third dream never came. Until now.

The Fourth Dream: 2026

On October 13, 2024, a 233-foot rocket booster fell from the sky and was caught, mid-air, by a pair of mechanical arms attached to its own launch tower.

Watch the footage. Understand what you are seeing.

SpaceX launched 138 missions in 2024. That is more than half of all rocket launches on Earth. In 2020, they launched 25. In 2025, they hit 170. The first Super Heavy booster was reused on Flight 9 in May 2025, the same booster that had been caught in January.

This is not incremental. This is the return of civilizational ambition.

On March 21, 2026, Elon Musk walked into a defunct power plant in Austin, Texas, and announced Terafab: $25 billion, solar-powered, targeting 1 terawatt of compute capacity.

Not a chip fab, a civilizational asset.

The kind of thing governments used to build. The kind of thing we stopped building after the 1970s.

In parallel, NASA confirmed Artemis II: four astronauts will orbit the Moon for the first time since Eugene Cernan stepped off the lunar surface in December 1972. Fifty-three years between crewed lunar missions. Half a century of low Earth orbit. Half a century of incremental.

1900: Paris dreamed of electricity and flight. 1969: America dreamed of the Moon. 1985–2020: We forgot how to dream. 2026: The builders woke up, and this time, the capital is private.

II. The Builders Are Back

The results of the optimization era were spectacular in their own way. Global poverty collapsed. A billion people entered the middle class. Supply chains wrapped the planet in a web so tight that a cargo ship stuck in the Suez could halt automobile production in Bavaria.

But the ambition drained out. 🤯

We stopped building the future. We started managing the present.

Now look at the last eighteen months.

In compute, Terafab is not alone. TSMC has committed $65 billion across three Arizona fabs, the largest foreign direct investment in American history. Intel is deploying $20 billion in Ohio, with optionality for $100 billion across the decade. Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI collectively raised north of $20 billion in a single year to build infrastructure that will obsolete software as we know it.

In energy, the numbers are even more striking. Commonwealth Fusion Systems has raised $2.86 billion to build SPARC, a fusion reactor the size of a tennis court that could match a traditional nuclear plant’s output. Google already signed to buy half the power from their first commercial facility. Fervo Energy, which filed for a $2-4 billion IPO in January, is delivering power from the first enhanced geothermal plant this year, the oil industry’s drilling techniques, repurposed to tap the Earth’s heat anywhere on the planet. Base Power closed a $1 billion Series C to deploy residential batteries at scale and build domestic manufacturing in Austin. Grid resilience is becoming a consumer product.

Pacific Fusion raised $900 million in a Series A, the largest seed-stage energy round in history. Helion Energy has raised $1 billion with Microsoft as first customer, targeting grid power by 2028. Twelve secured $645 million to build AirPlant One in Moses Lake, Washington… the first commercial facility in the US to convert captured CO2 into jet fuel. Alaska Airlines, United, and British Airways parent IAG are already customers. A 260-million-gallon SAF contract is signed. Aviation decarbonization is no longer theoretical.

Total climate tech venture investment in 2025: $40.5 billion. Fusion alone: $2.64 billion in twelve months, a five-fold increase since 2021. Nuclear fission startups: another $2 billion. The energy sector has not seen private capital deployed at this scale since the original oil boom.

The public markets are waking up. SOLV Energy IPO’d in February at a $6 billion valuation, the largest solar EPC contractor in the US. Terrestrial Energy completed its SPAC merger and trades on Nasdaq. Oklo, backed by Sam Altman, hit a $10 billion market cap. These are not speculative bets. These are companies with contracts, customers, and construction crews.

The builders are not asking permission. They are deploying capital at scales we have not seen since the interstate highway system.

👋 My thesis: The West is re-industrializing. The projects are multi-decade. The capital is private. And the ambition is back.

III. The Old World Is Cracking

Do not mistake this for a smooth transition.

The old world is not retiring gracefully. It is fracturing under its own contradictions, and the fractures are accelerating.

Three energy crises in four years.

2022: Nord Stream blow up. Europe’s energy sovereignty illusion shatters overnight. Gas to Europe cut by 80%. The continent that built its industrial model on cheap Russian energy had no alternative ready at scale. German chemical giants, BASF, Covestro, Lanxess, began relocating production to the United States and China. Electricity prices in Germany hit 3x the US average. The bet on Russian gas was over.

2023: Extreme weather events expose grid fragility across Texas, California, and Southern Europe simultaneously. Rolling blackouts. Infrastructure designed for a stable climate meeting a climate that is no longer stable. Southeast Asia followed: grid instability in Vietnam, rolling blackouts in the Philippines, stranded natural gas projects across Indonesia. The region built for export-led growth powered by coal and LNG. Both became liabilities in the same year.

2026: Iran threatens the Strait of Hormuz. Brent hits $112 per barrel. Jerome Powell issues an explicit “energy shock” warning on live television. Three central banks pause in the same week, citing the same variable.

The Strait carries 21% of global petroleum liquids every single day. Roughly 20 million barrels pass through a chokepoint 21 miles wide. The Houthis demonstrated, with cheap drones and Iranian guidance… that trillion-dollar naval fleets cannot secure commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The Strait was next. Not if. When. And now “when” is here.

At some point, the market stops waiting for governments to fix it.

That point was this year.

Businesses that absorbed three consecutive energy cost shocks in four years are now rebuilding their energy architecture from scratch, solar generation, battery storage, efficiency retrofits, not because of incentives but because dependency on the grid has become an operational risk they can no longer model around.

The crisis did what no subsidy program could: it made the alternative rational at every level of the market.

This is what a structural transition looks like from the inside. It does not announce itself. It shows up in procurement decisions, in capex reallocation, in three-year energy contracts being replaced by owned infrastructure.

The capital implications are severe. Sovereign wealth funds are rotating out of Treasuries and into hard assets. Family offices are pulling from public equities into direct ownership. The builders are back. And the old world is cracking. These are not sequential. They are parallel.

This is not 1945, where a clear winner emerged from the wreckage to build the postwar order. This is 1971, the year Nixon closed the gold window, the year the Bretton Woods system collapsed, the year the rules changed and most people did not notice for a decade.

The capital that thrives in this environment is not the capital that picks a side. It is the capital that builds the bridge.

On the infrastructure side, energy independence is no longer a policy preference, it is a survival requirement. Solar, nuclear, batteries, and grid-scale storage are not ESG plays. They are national security. Compute is the new oil. The nations and corporations that control semiconductor fabrication will control the next century. TSMC, Samsung, Intel, and now Terafab are not competing for market share. They are competing for civilizational leverage. Supply chain localization is the dominant theme of the 2020s. The CFO who optimized for “just in time” in 2019 is now optimizing for “just in case.”

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since late February 2026. Tanker traffic has dropped to near zero. Brent crude broke $100 a barrel and peaked at $126. Strategic reserves are being drawn at unprecedented levels.

This is not a theoretical risk scenario. This is a live supply chain shock, hitting petroleum, LNG, refined fuels, and fertilizer simultaneously, at a scale that dwarfs anything since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

And for anyone watching where LP capital flows in climate and energy, this is the catalyst that changes the math.

The immediate fallout

The numbers are severe. Roughly 20 million barrels per day of petroleum liquids transited Hormuz. Bypass pipeline capacity covers only about a third of Gulf export flows. Europe is particularly exposed: over half of the continent’s jet fuel imports sailed through the Strait. LNG markets, which clear at the margin, saw European natural gas prices nearly double in days on what amounts to a 3% physical shortfall. And with a third of globally traded fertilizer transiting Hormuz during Northern Hemisphere spring planting season, the agricultural supply chain impact could be dramatic.

Multiply all of this by surging war risk insurance premiums, resumed Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, and major carriers rerouting via the Cape of Good Hope, adding weeks to transit times.

Why this accelerates climate capital

There is no fast clean substitute for many of these commodities. But those that are quicker to deploy and have more resilient domestic supply chains are now structurally favored. This is not a policy argument. It is a pricing argument.

Domestic clean fuel producers are the immediate winners.

Ethanol and domestically sourced biofuels have the least exposure to chokepoint risk. The ethanol-to-SAF pathway becomes dramatically more attractive as UCO-based feedstock costs spike. This is a direct tailwind for projects like Gevo’s Net-Zero 1 and LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines.

Renewables close the gap faster than most realize.

Wind and solar added 830 TWh of generation globally in 2025. The Hormuz LNG shortfall, converted to electricity, represents roughly 600 TWh. That is a surmountable gap from normal deployment momentum, even before any crisis-driven policy push. After Russia’s 2022 invasion, Europe briefly bounced back to coal. The lasting effect was a near-doubling of annual solar additions within two years. The same dynamic is likely here, only faster.

Gulf-anchored hydrogen projects face delayed timelines.

NEOM, ACWA Power, and Oman’s green hydrogen corridor are staring at repriced financing and offtaker interest shifting toward Australia, Chile, and the US Gulf. Capital that was waiting for Middle Eastern green hydrogen to come online will look for alternatives.

The capital formation signal

Whether this becomes a true turning point depends on duration. Sustained price pressure moves institutional capital. Short shocks do not. With Brent projected above $98 through April, the window is open.

For LPs:

Climate and energy transition funds are no longer a values-based allocation. They are a hedge against the geopolitical fragility of fossil fuel supply chains. The funds that closed in the last 24 months, from Brookfield’s $20B transition fund to Energize’s $430M climate software vehicle, are positioned on the right side of this trade.

For GPs:

The fundraising narrative just shifted from ‘the energy transition is inevitable’ to ‘the energy transition is a national security imperative.’ If you are raising a climate fund right now, this is the macro backdrop that makes your pitch deck land differently.

The question is no longer whether institutional capital will flow into climate. It is which GPs will capture it, and which LPs are already deploying.

Which brings us to Part II.

Repeat allocators signal conviction:

I want to tell you about a quiet migration of capital that most U.S. fund managers are completely ignoring.

It is not from the Middle East. It is not from Singapore. It is not from Japan.

It is from Australia.

And it is moving right now, across the Pacific, looking for exactly what you are building.

I. The Thesis: $4.5 Trillion Looking for a Home

Australia’s superannuation system has become the fourth largest pension pool on Earth. In 2025, Australia’s net foreign equities position hit an all-time high of US$528 billion. Meaning Australian investors now hold more equity in overseas companies than foreign investors hold in Australian ones.

AustralianSuper, the country’s largest fund, has been doubling its private equity portfolio. And this month (this week!) the Australian Government presented its 2026 Australian Superannuation Investment Summit, opening in San Francisco on March 8, continuing in Washington D.C. on March 10–11, and concluding in New York on March 12–13.

II. Why Australian Capital Is Different

Let me tell you what makes Australian family offices and super funds uniquely valuable as LPs, and why most U.S. GPs are making a mistake by ignoring them.

Australia ranks as the global leader in the efficiency of unicorn creation, generating 1.22 unicorns for every billion dollars of venture capital invested. On a per-dollar basis, no other country comes close.

This is not a coincidence of resources. It is a reflection of how Australian investors think. They are patient. They are founder-aligned. They have a long track record of backing capital-efficient, globally-minded builders before the U.S. consensus forms.

In the span of seven days, three of the most valuable private companies on Earth made moves that will quietly reshape the LP landscape for the next decade.

Stripe crossed $159 billion in valuation. OpenAI closed $110 billion in a single round: the largest private financing in the history of venture capital, not by a little, by a factor of three. Anthropic opened a $6 billion employee share sale, allowing its engineers and researchers to cash out at a $350 billion valuation, then, within hours of that announcement, was declared a “supply-chain risk to national security” by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Capital is being created and destroyed in the same breath.

And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos sits the most important question for anyone in our room:

Who are the new LPs? Where are they coming from? And are you positioned to meet them?

I. The Cambrian Explosion of Private Wealth

The last time Silicon Valley created this many new millionaires in a compressed window was 1999.

We know how that ended. But we also know what it seeded. The fortunes minted in the dot-com era funded the angel rounds of Airbnb, Uber, and SpaceX a decade later. The LPs who backed Sequoia’s 2003 fund did so on paper wealth that came from the previous generation of tech exits.

History rhymes.

What is happening right now… in the span of weeks, not years… is the most rapid creation of new investable private wealth since the internet bubble. Except this time, the underlying companies are profitable. The revenue is real. And the wealth is not evaporating into Pets.com.

It is landing in the pockets of 10,000 Stripe engineers, Anthropic researchers, and OpenAI product managers.

The question for us is not whether this wealth will be deployed. It will be.

The question is: into what? And managed by whom?

II. Three Signals That Changed Everything This Week

⚡ Signal 1: Stripe crosses $159B. The new benchmark for patient private capital.

On February 24th, Stripe announced a new employee tender offer valuing the company at $159 billion. Up from $91.5 billion just one year ago. A 74% jump in twelve months, for a company that processed $1.9 trillion in total payment volume in 2025, up 34% year over year.

The investors buying the shares in this tender are not strangers: Thrive Capital, Coatue, and a16z. They are not doing this out of charity. They are doing this because Stripe is building the financial infrastructure of the internet economy, and they want more of it.

But here is the detail that matters for us: this is an employee tender offer. The founders - Patrick and John Collison - are not selling. The money flows to current and former Stripe employees.

Thousands of people are, right now, receiving life-changing liquidity for the first time.

🚀 Signal 2: OpenAI raises $110 billion. An anthology of venture capital and why this round ends the debate.

Let me put this in context. Because the number is so large it stops feeling real.

To understand what just happened, you need the full arc. Here is every era-defining capital raise since the end of World War II, the moments that redrew the map of what private capital could do.

The Anthology of Venture Capital. 1946–2026.

Every record on this table held for years. Some held for decades.

OpenAI broke the record it set itself, in less than twelve months.

The $40 billion round from March 2025 was already the largest private tech deal in history. It lasted less than twelve months before OpenAI made it look modest.

The $110 billion round - closed February 27th, 2026 - is backed by Amazon ($50B), Nvidia ($30B), and SoftBank ($30B). The pre-money valuation: $730 billion. And the round is still open. More investors are expected.

To be direct about what this means: the largest corporate entities on Earth, the cloud hyperscaler, the chip monopolist, and the Japanese conglomerate that has been more right about AI than anyone, have all voted with their balance sheets. In the same round.

This is not a bet. This is a conviction.

The investors building the portfolios of the next thirty years did not wait.

💰 Signal 3: Anthropic opens a $6B employee share sale. One hundred new decamillionaires, minimum.

On February 23rd, Anthropic launched a secondary share sale allowing current and former employees who have worked there for at least 12 months to sell shares at a $350 billion valuation. The pool: $5–6 billion. Purchased not by Anthropic, but by outside investors.

Anthropic has roughly 3,000 employees. Not all are eligible. Not all will sell everything. But do the math on even a fraction of that $6 billion flowing to early engineers and researchers.

We are talking about hundreds of individuals, many under 35, receiving seven, eight, or nine-figure liquidity events for the first time in their lives.

They are, right now, asking themselves the same question our family office principals asked themselves in 1999, in 2004, in 2012: where do I put this?

Not into a savings account. Not into an index fund.

Into the next wave.

III. When the Same Week Hands You a Contradiction

And then came Friday.

The same week Anthropic opened its $6 billion employee share sale, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared the company a “supply-chain risk to national security.” President Trump ordered every federal agency to cease using Anthropic’s technology immediately.

The backstory: Anthropic had a $200 million Pentagon contract. Negotiations over its terms broke down because Anthropic refused to allow its Claude models to be used for fully autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance of American citizens. The DoD demanded unlimited “all lawful use” access. Dario Amodei said, publicly, on the record, “we cannot in good conscience accede to their request.”

Hegseth’s response: Anthropic delivered “a master class in arrogance and betrayal.”

Hours later, OpenAI announced it had signed a new Pentagon deal to fill the gap.

Let me be honest about what this means, because the implications cut in multiple directions.

The case against Anthropic’s position: In a world where AI is becoming sovereign infrastructure, refusing government contracts is not a neutral act. It hands the most consequential military contracts in history to competitors with fewer safeguards. The argument that “we are protecting Americans from surveillance” rings hollow when the alternative is xAI or OpenAI, companies with arguably less institutional focus on safety, getting the classified network access instead.

The case for Anthropic’s position: The precedent being set here is not a small thing. If a private company can be declared a national security risk for refusing to enable autonomous weapons systems, then every AI safety constraint every company has ever built is negotiable under government pressure. Today it’s Anthropic. Tomorrow it’s the entire industry.

The uncomfortable synthesis: Anthropic is valued at $380 billion. It has $14 billion in annualized revenue. The Pentagon contract was worth $200 million. This is not an existential financial threat. It is an existential reputational and legal one.

And it is happening simultaneously with the largest employee wealth creation event in the company’s history.

The tension here is extraordinary. The same week that hundreds of Anthropic employees became newly wealthy, their employer was being branded a threat to the nation they live in.

This is not noise. This is the defining tension of the AI era: sovereign power vs. private ethics. Government compulsion vs. corporate guardrails.

Watch this case. It will set precedent.

IV. The New Eldorado Is Not a Place. It’s a Moment.

Let me tell you what I actually think is happening.

Every major technological transition in history has produced a new class of capital holders. The railroad barons funded the Gilded Age’s industrial expansion. The oil fortunes of the 1920s seeded the venture ecosystem of the 1950s. The dot-com survivors became the angel investors of the 2000s.

We are watching the same cycle begin again. In real time. This month.

The Stripe tender, the Anthropic share sale, OpenAI’s repeated secondaries, these are not isolated events. They are the mechanism by which a decade of private company value creation is being converted, for the first time, into deployable capital in the hands of individual investors.

Thousands of newly liquid individuals, technically sophisticated, deeply embedded in frontier technology, highly skeptical of traditional asset management, are about to become limited partners for the first time.

They will not go to a Goldman Sachs private wealth office. They will not buy Treasury bonds. They will ask their former colleagues: who is building what I believe in? And who has a fund I can get into?

Not the $50 billion sovereign wealth fund negotiating over governance rights. Not the endowment that moves at committee speed. The individual who understands Anthropic’s Constitutional AI approach because they helped write it. The ex-Stripe engineer who understands payments infrastructure because they built it for five years. The OpenAI researcher who knows exactly which lab is actually doing the important work, and which ones are just issuing press releases.

This is patient, informed, values-aligned capital. And it is being minted right now.

The question for every GP on our stage, and every founder in our room, is simple:

Are you in front of these people? Do they know your name? Do they know your thesis?

If not, why not?

V. Conclusion: The Room That Matters in 2026

I’ve been saying for four years that the most important capital in the next cycle will not come from the places it came from in the last one.

This week proved it.

I want to tell you about a conversation that happened today.

Cristian Rabiti, a nuclear physicist, the CEO of NuCube Energy, and a two-time sponsor of our Family Offices Summits in San Francisco and New York… Just closed a $13 million seed round.

One of the investors: The Walton family, one of the ten wealthiest individuals on Earth, with an estimated net worth of $145 billion.

In November, they came back with a $160M Series C, co-led by FedEx, which simultaneously placed an initial order for 53 vehicles. Their total order book now stands at 4,690 vehicles, worth approximately $500 million. They are in production and shipping.

This is what it looks like when a company transitions from “promising” to “inevitable.”

⚗️ Twelve: $843M+ and counting

Nicholas Flanders, CEO of Twelve, the CO₂-to-fuel unicorn — was one of our NYC speakers and a defining voice in our energy panels. In February 2025, they added $83M to their Series C, with new investors including Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, Mitsui & Co., the Development Bank of Japan, and Japan’s Hydrogen Fund. In May, United Airlines Ventures joined as a strategic investor. Their total raised is now estimated above $843 million. AirPlant One, their first commercial facility, is moving toward production.

When Amazon, Japan’s sovereign development bank, and a major airline all back the same SAF company within six months of each other, it is worth paying attention.

☢️ Last Energy: $100M+ oversubscribed Series C

Bret Kugelmass, CEO of Last Energy and one of our SF speakers, closed an oversubscribed $100M+ Series C in December 2025, led by Astera Institute. Here is the detail I find most remarkable: their South Wales site has been admitted into UK nuclear licensing, the first new commercial nuclear site to enter UK licensing since 1978. In Texas, they’ve signed a lease at Texas A&M’s RELLIS campus, with reactor criticality targeted for 2026. The total raised is now $164M+.

⚡ Avalanche Energy: $39M in 2025–2026

Brian Riordan, co-founder and COO of Avalanche Energy, was one of our SF speakers. In July 2025, Washington State awarded them a $10M grant to build their FusionWERX commercial test facility. Then, on February 3rd of this year, two weeks ago — they closed an oversubscribed $29M Series B led by RA Capital Management, with every prior investor re-upping alongside three new institutional names. Their breakthrough: operating their compact fusion device at 300,000 volts, a record for their plasma confinement approach.

⚛️ NuCube Energy: $13M seed, February 19, 2026

And then, yesterday.

Cristian Rabiti didn’t just attend our summits, he invested in them, sponsoring both San Francisco and New York. He’s been building NuCube quietly: a solid-state fission microreactor that produces 1,100°C heat, making it the only nuclear technology that can directly compete with natural gas for industrial applications. The backers before yesterday included Halliburton Labs, Shell GameChanger, Idealab’s Bill Gross, and a DOE GAIN voucher.

Yesterday, Rob Walton led a $13M seed round.

I’ll say it plainly: a $145 billion Walmart heir making a direct, named bet on a nuclear microreactor startup is not a normal thing. It is a signal. The Walton family has historically been one of the most conservative stewards of generational wealth in America. When capital at that tier moves into deep tech at seed stage, it is worth asking why.

III. What This Tells Us About the Adaptive Economy

I’ve been writing about the Adaptive Economy since 2020. The core thesis has never changed: certain transformations, in energy, in industrial infrastructure, in how we move things and power things and build things… are not matters of if, but when 🔮. The question is only who captures the returns.

A trillion-dollar handshake between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia just lit the fuse on the global arms race for autonomous military robotics.

It sounds like a meme. But if you look at what’s happening beneath the surface of AI infrastructure and robotics, this quote isn’t science fiction—it’s macroeconomics. It’s the early blueprint of a world where labor, productivity, and capital markets are rewritten by autonomous machines.

And the signals are everywhere.

• Figure AI is now one of the fastest-scaling robotics companies in history, raising billions to build universal humanoids that can plug directly into industrial manufacturing workflows.

• ABB buying SoftBank’s robotics business for $5 billion is the clearest market signal yet: robotics is no longer a “future bet”—it’s industrial infrastructure.

• And behind it all sits the real engine: gigawatts of AI compute, the backbone of the coming robotics boom.

Because the real story isn’t LLMs for AI assistants.
Imagine a world where machines pour the concrete, patrol the skies, repair the grids, and guard the borders — all without rest, fear, or hesitation.

Robots might soon run the physical world… And nations are preparing for that world right now.

Let’s break it down.

PART 1 — The Imperative Of The New Robotics Infrastructure

A silent global race is underway: build as much compute as possible before competitors do.

The OpenAI–AMD 6GW deal is the perfect case study. A deployment beginning with 1GW of MI450 chips in 2026 and scaling for five years is not a “GPU purchase”—it’s an energy treaty. A bet that the world will need massive inference capacity to operate robots, industrial AI, autonomous systems, and real-time decision engines.

This is why over 100GW of new data center capacity has been announced since 2024. Nations are bidding for compute like they once did oil. Investors are underwriting multi-billion-dollar data centers based on one assumption:

Not AI LLMs… Robotics + AI = the next industrial revolution.

And when you zoom into robotics, the thesis becomes obvious:

• Robots are moving from niche automation → to industrial / military purpose labor.

• The economics are bending: a robot working 20 hours/day at near-zero marginal cost will outperform human productivity curves.

• Companies like Figure AI, Agility, and Tesla Optimus are racing to define the “software-defined worker.”

The thesis: AI infrastructure is being built for a future where robots run the physical world.

Which means the infrastructure “bubble” may be a misdiagnosis

Yes, we may overbuild compute in the short term.

But that overbuild becomes:

• cheap surplus power for industry

• infrastructure for advanced robotics

• backbone capacity for military autonomy

• the energy-AI substrate for the next geopolitical era

This is also why ABB’s $5B robotics acquisition is so important.
Industrial giants don’t pay biotech valuations for robotics unless they see a multi-decade demand curve driven by both civilian industrial automation and defense autonomy.

PART 2 — The LLMs Bubble vs. Real Industrial (and Military) Demand

Here’s the counter-argument: what if all this AI infrastructure is a bubble?

Hyperscalers are announcing data centers faster than they can secure electrons. Clean power is being diverted away from climate projects and into GPU clusters. CarbonCapture’s Project Bison was paused partly because AI data centers outbid them for clean energy.

So what happens if demand slows?

We get:

• Stranded gigawatts sitting behind unused substations

• Grid congestion with no paying customer

• Distorted power prices

• Delayed decarbonization because compute takes priority

At first glance, it looks like classic irrational exuberance.

But here’s my understanding: the “bubble” may feed the next boom—because the real demand isn’t coming from consumer AI or enterprise chatbots.

It’s coming from military robotics and autonomous security.

The public narrative about AI focuses on productivity tools, copilots, and humanoid robots in warehouses. But the hidden market, the one absorbing enormous compute and robotics R&D, is defense.

Because the future battlefield—and the future border—is robotic.

The Real AI Market: Industrial Manufacturing Robots & Autonomous Military Systems

Look at the companies quietly leading the charge:

• Shield AI — Autonomous Combat Systems

Their X-Bat autonomous aircraft is not a toy drone; it’s a fully autonomous ISR platform capable of penetrating contested airspace without GPS or comms.
This is the first real glimpse of AI-native warfare—machines that make split-second navigation, targeting, and survival decisions at speeds humans cannot match.

Shield AI’s entire stack requires:

• enormous inference power

• edge compute optimized for survival

• real-time robotic autonomy

This is precisely the kind of demand that 6GW-scale GPU deployments are preparing for.

• XPeng AeroHT — Dual-Use Aerial Robotics

XPeng’s advanced aerial vehicles may look like futuristic consumer toys, but they’re dual-use platforms. Urban air mobility tech has direct defense and national security applications:

• rapid-response logistics

• aerial perimeter defense

• autonomous patrol

• swarm coordination

China understood this and might be 10 years in advance on this sector.

XPeng is not building flying cars; they’re building the next generation of distributed aerial robotics, which will operate on both civilian and military networks. For them, that’s where the money really is.

Why this matters: Defense is the ultimate “floor” of AI demand, not your Chat GPT…

Defense strategy planners care about:

• autonomy

• reliability

• energy efficiency

• long-duration missions

• zero-latency edge inference

Exactly the capabilities being built today by OpenAI, NVIDIA, AMD, and robotics platforms like Figure AI and Agility.

So even if the consumer AI bubble pops…
even if corporate AI budgets shrink…
even if data centers temporarily exceed demand…

The military market will continue absorbing compute, robotics, and AI talent at an accelerating pace.

-Defense is not cyclical.
-Defense is not optional.
-Defense doesn’t downsize during recessions.
And defense has unlimited budgets (unlimited market) when existential threats emerge.

PART 3 — Capital Allocation in the Age of Industrial & Military Robotics

If you’re trying to understand where the next era of wealth is going to be created, ignore the noise around chatbots and “AI productivity tools.”
The real transformation—economic, geopolitical, and generational—is happening in two arenas:

1. Industrial manufacturing robotics

2. Military & autonomous defense robotics

And the capital flows emerging today are shaping the next 30 years of global power.

This shift isn’t driven by hype.
It’s driven by liquidity, especially the Great Wealth Transfer (GWT):

Military Robotics: The Largest Hidden AI Market

If industrial robotics will reshape economies, military robotics will reshape geopolitics.

While consumer and enterprise AI dominate the headlines, defense spending silently dwarfs every other frontier tech category:

• Military AI spending will exceed $200B by 2032.

• Autonomous drone systems grew 6x since 2020.

• The Pentagon’s Replicator Initiative is funding “thousands of autonomous systems per year.”

• China is accelerating development of autonomous strike drones and robotic infantry support units.

• Companies like Shield AI (with X-Bat), Anduril, and XPeng’s dual-use AeroHT platforms represent a new era of robotic warfare.

Defense is the ultimate floor of demand:

• It doesn’t slow in recessions

• It has infinite budgets during conflict

• It absorbs advanced robotics faster than private industry

• And it requires enormous GPU inference infrastructure

The majority of the world’s most advanced autonomous robotics will be built for security, surveillance, deterrence, and combat long before they become consumer products.
