I love good food and world history. So when my wife sent me an Instagram reel about Jamaican food history, it was a true fusion of ideal worlds.

What I learned inspired me to revisit a trail of research that I’ve been on since May 2025: the Scottish heritage of many Black Jamaicans…BEFORE THE AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE.

Now, if my thesis is frying your brain like bammy then perhaps you should sit this one out. However, if I’ve sparked an irrational sense of deep intuition, then please pull up a seat to my supper table. You’re about to be served a special appetizer that offers a brief taste of things to come.

For years I was having lucid dreams about traveling to Inwood, Manhattan on the A train. Through meditation I came to the gradual conclusion that I was actually astral projecting. To keep my conscious mind focused on the purpose behind my mental excursions, and not what I saw in the process, my preconscious mind retranslated what I saw in the astral realm into the visually tame landscape of Uptown, New York City in lieu of the exoticism of the outer realms.

By the way, amusement parks are thematically based on astral experiences where we are stimulated through sight and motion. These parks are often by waterways (lakes and oceans) that speak to the vastness of the preconscious human mind.

Even with this understanding my “dreams” persisted as a riddle I hadn’t quite solved. I needed some answers. So in May 2025 I traveled to 207th Street in Manhattan on the A train to see what new revelations I might receive. Once I got there I went to Isham Park. While in the park two unusually huge bees began to swarm around me. I remember feeling that the sky felt closer to me than normal. The last time I experienced anything reminiscent of that surreal, yet subtle feeling was in January 2023 in the United Kingdom. At the time I was just a few hours away from Scotland.

I did a quick Google search about Inwood, Manhattan and found that it was built on highland. As a student of world history I know that Scotland was the home of the Highlanders seen in the film Braveheart (1995) and the cult-classic, Highlander (1986). The Peter Tosh song “Mystic Man” ironically captures the synopsis of the Highlander movie.

These people would sometimes paint themselves blue, not unlike how I am depicted on the cover of my first book The Treasures of Darkness. Life is full of so much meaning. It’s up to us to find the lessons within the ciphers of our existence.

As a man of Jamaican descent, my curiosity was heightened when I realized that the Jamaican flag design is a variation of the Scottish flag. Some readers will roll their eyes about these observations and say that Jamaica was colonized by white Scots, but it wasn’t. It was colonized by the Spaniards before being transferred to the British who overthrew Spain as the powerhouse of Europe. England’s new imperial status allowed it to invade Scotland.

When the English Oliver Cromwell invaded Scotland several Scots were shipped to the Americas as slaves to work in the American colonies. The book Ancient & Modern Britons Vol. 1 (1884) by Scottish author David MacRitchie describes the original Highlanders of old Scotland as Black. When you read Annals of the Caledonians Picts and Scots (1828) the Scottish Highlanders are described as Black. On page 7 of the book they are said to have brown skin complexions with curly hair. There are other old books with similar descriptions of the people of old Scotland.

The Stepping Razor Winston Hubert MacIntosh dropped the “Macin” like Tariq Nasheed upon embarking on a more lucrative hustle, and was simply known as Peter Tosh. “Macintosh” is a Scottish name, but if there were Black Scots we cannot assume that Peter’s surname is merely a stain of slavery.

It seems more likely that there were Scots working on Jamaican slave plantations, as opposed to running them and siring mulattos babies with enslaved West African, and subdued Arawak Indian women.

Why does the novel The Last King of Scotland feature Idi Amin on the book cover in Jamaican flag colors? Is the book title an inside joke?

The Instagram video included HERE features a Black woman who is a British historian talking about the surprising origin of Jamaica’s national dish of ackee and saltfish, better known as salted herring.

It turns out that Jamaican slave plantation owners needed an inexpensive source of protein to feed their hard working slaves. Saltfish was imported from Scotland to Jamaica to feed them. I was recently told by a Jamaican brother that white Jamaican plantation owners did not want their slaves to know how to fish for themselves so they would teach slave children horrific stories about monsters in the sea, hence many Jamaicans don’t know how to swim. I’m not saying it is absolutely true because I don’t know. Yet I do think that there is value in the share.

However, it seems plausible to me that saltfish was fed to Jamaican slaves because it was convenient and already familiar to the ones who originally came directly from Scotland before mixing with the indigenous Caribs, Arawak, and African slaves of Jamaica. Most slaves in the Americas were children, so after generations of trauma it is easy for many of them to forget where they came from.

This adds more context to Jamaica’s pluralistic national motto “Out of Many One People.” The historian on Instagram is looking back at the data under the presumption that every Black slave in the Americas was taken from Africa when this may not have been the case.

What I’ve shared here will be a lot for some readers to digest. I may even sound crazy to you. All that I ask is that you consider it all with an open mind, and do your own research. All the best until next time.

The 19-page paper discusses the role of the spiritual sciences in the cultivation of the African mind. While the perceptive reader will recognize a couple of obscure terms and concepts from my books and articles concerning Vodun culture, this PDF goes into greater detail on those elements and is written by Dr. Datey Kumodzie of Ghana.

This is arguably the most comprehensive sample of his work on West African spiritual science that you will readily find online. It contains obscure, but highly relevant information, that I’m confident that you’ve never heard before.

His explosive statement concerning the ethnogenesis of the Ewe of Ghana, Togo, and Benin is verified by Agbotadua Togbi Kumassah who made his transition in December 2025. Kumassah was appointed by the Anlo Ewe royal court as an official historian and cultural leader, so the declaration in these pages is backed by a reputable source within the Ewe ethnic group.
