People ask me when I became a photographer.

I never really know how to answer that question.

If I say it began after my studies, it doesn't feels right. If I say it began the day I bought my first camera, then that's only the story of a machine entering my life, not the story of how I learned to see.

I believe I came into this world as a photographer without a camera.

That may sound contradictory but photography, to me, has never started with a lens. It actually begins with the ability to see. Every human being is born a storyteller, some tell stories through words, some through music, some through silence and some through the way they observe the world around them. Before there were cameras, there were eyes. There is imagination, sketches and memories before there were photographs.

Long before photography was invented, people preserved what they saw by drawing and painting. They recorded mountains, faces, journeys, battles and dreams with charcoal, ink and colour because they feared that memories would fade. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and countless unnamed painters before and after him were photographing the world with charcoal and pigment long before photography found its mechanical eye. The camera did not invent vision; it merely gave vision another language.

When I was a child, I remember spending long afternoons looking at the sky, I didn't know why it fascinated me. I only knew that I kept looking. Long before we learn how to describe the world, we begin storing images inside our minds. Those images become our first photographs.

A photograph is created in the imagination before it is ever created by a camera.

Some of these inner images eventually find their way into the world through a lens. Others remain trapped inside us forever because they belong to a place that light alone cannot reach. Not every photograph is meant to exist on paper or on a screen. Some remain invisible, existing only in memory, imagination, and emotion.

When I finally held a camera, I realised that I was not merely photographing people or objects.

I was photographing air.

Air carries everything that cannot be touched-light, dust, silence, warmth, smoke, grief, hope, memory, and time. The emptiest space in a photograph often contains its deepest meaning. This way of seeing reminds me of the teachings of Imam Ali (AS), who repeatedly invited humanity to look beyond appearances and recognise the realities hidden beneath the visible world. Perhaps that is why I have always been drawn not only to what is seen but also to what is felt.

As my journey continued, something unexpected happened.

Non-living things began to speak.

Old windows held conversations. Empty roads remembered footsteps. Trees carried patience. Morning mist felt alive. Smoke drifting through the air no longer looked like smoke alone. Sometimes I wondered whether I was looking at something beyond ordinary sight. Some would call it imagination; others, coincidence. Whatever it was, it never allowed itself to be photographed. There are realities that refuse to become images, no matter how long we wait behind the viewfinder.

That, perhaps, is one of the greatest lessons photography has taught me: not everything that exists wishes to be captured.

The first time I sent an invoice for my work, I realised photography had changed. Until then, the camera had only asked me to see. Now it was asking me to explain what seeing was worth.

The camera that once offered freedom slowly begins asking questions that have no easy answers. How do you place a price on patience? How do you invoice sleepless nights, uncertainty, or the emotional weight of witnessing another person's grief? How do you explain the value of waiting days for a single honest frame?

These are questions that every visual storyteller eventually faces.

There are moments when this profession leaves you standing in the middle of a desert, surrounded by stories that matter deeply to you but are difficult to explain to a world that measures value in deadlines, invoices and market rates. The work becomes difficult to label, and sometimes the storyteller is left without words.

Life exists everywhere.

Yet I often ask myself another question: can the life that moves my soul also sustain my own? Can I continue documenting the stories that call me while earning enough to continue that journey? It is a question I still carry, and perhaps every photographer carries it in one form or another.

Even today, whenever I raise my camera to my eye, I feel that someone else is looking through the viewfinder with me. Not another person, but something within me that has always existed. It watched the world long before I owned a camera. It taught me that photography is not simply the act of pressing a shutter. It is the act of seeing, listening, waiting, and believing that every image first lives inside the human soul before it ever reaches the sensor.

Perhaps the camera never made me a photographer.

Perhaps it simply introduced the world to the photographer who had always been there.

It is difficult to explain, yet I have felt it for as long as I can remember. Before the black banners appear across our neighbourhood, before the first majlis begins, before the first chest is struck in mourning, there is a strange scent in the air—a feeling of grief that quietly settles over my heart. It is as though sorrow itself announces the arrival of Muharram. The feeling returns every year, accompanying me not only through Muharram but throughout Safar, reminding me that the days ahead are unlike any other in the Islamic calendar.

The months of Muharram and Safar mark the annual remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn ibn Ali (A.S.), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and the third Imam of the Shi’a Muslims. On the plains of Karbala, on the tenth day of Muharram in 61 AH, Imam Husayn, along with members of his family and his loyal companions, embraced martyrdom rather than submit to injustice. Their sacrifice remains one of history’s most enduring symbols of resistance against tyranny, unwavering faith, and moral courage.

More than thirteen centuries have passed since Karbala, yet no event in Islamic history continues to inspire such profound love, grief and devotion. Across continents and cultures, millions gather every year to remember Imam Husayn (A.S.). In Kashmir, where I was born and raised, this remembrance is not confined to ritual. It is woven into everyday life, passed from one generation to the next through memory, poetry and mourning.

I belong to a community that has inherited Karbala through remembrance rather than through sight.

Growing up, Muharram shaped my earliest understanding of faith. Every year, I found myself sitting in majalis beside my family, neighbours and friends. Those gatherings became my first classroom. Marsiyas filled the aza khana with grief that seemed to transcend time itself. Before I understood history, I learned about justice through Imam Husayn a.s. Before I understood sacrifice, I learned about Hazrat Abbas a.s. Before I knew the meaning of steadfastness, I heard the story of Lady Zainab s.a. Karbala became more than an event from the past; it became a moral compass through which I began to understand the world.

Even today, I return to those gatherings every Muharram. Like countless others, I discover something new in a tragedy I have heard since childhood. The story never changes, yet every year my understanding of it does.

As a visual storyteller and photojournalist, I spend most of the year searching for moments that can be preserved through a camera. My work depends on observation. Every photograph begins with light. Every frame depends upon what the eye can see.

Yet during Muharram, I often leave my camera aside.

Not because there are no photographs to make, but because some moments resist photography.

The most powerful images of Muharram are invisible.

They are not found inside the viewfinder. They exist inside the minds and hearts of the mourners.

This year, while participating in a Kashmiri marsiya majlis, I found myself reflecting on something I had never consciously articulated before.

None of us sitting inside the aza khana had witnessed Karbala.

None of us had seen the blazing sun of Ashura.

None of us had heard the cries of the thirsty children.

None of us had stood beside Imam Husayn (A.S.) as he faced an army alone.

Yet every mourner around me seemed able to see it all with remarkable clarity.

How?

The answer, I realised, lay in marsiya.

Inside the aza khana, mourners gathered around the farsh-e-aza, seated shoulder to shoulder in circles that stretched across several rows. The room fell silent except for the voice of the zakir. As he began reciting a centuries-old Kashmiri marsiya, every listener joined him in the familiar refrain. Their voices merged into one, carrying verses that had travelled through generations before reaching ours.

Slowly, the room around us disappeared.

The walls of the Aza khana dissolved into the horizon of Karbala.

The farsh-e-aza beneath us became the burning sands of Ashura.

The silence between verses turned into the desert wind.

Without moving an inch, we travelled more than thirteen centuries into the past.

The zakir did not show us Karbala.

He invited us to build it within ourselves.

Every verse painted another image.

Every pause allowed imagination to complete what history could never fully describe.

As the marsiya unfolded, I found myself seeing the blazing sun hanging over the battlefield. I imagined the relentless heat that scorched the desert. I could almost hear the cries of thirsty children rising from the tents. I saw Imam Husayn (A.S.) standing with unmatched dignity before an army many times the size of his own. Then the zakir’s voice reached the farewell of Hazrat Ali Akbar (A.S.), and another scene slowly emerged before my eyes.

I could almost see the young son of Imam Husayn whose face, voice and character so closely resembled the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) that the family looked upon him whenever they longed to remember the Messenger of Allah. The marsiya spoke of a father watching his beloved son seek permission to enter a battlefield from which there would be no return. There was no painting before us. No dramatic performance. No moving image projected on a screen. Yet every mourner sitting in that gathering witnessed the same farewell.

I imagined the final embrace between father and son, heavy with the knowledge that it would be their last. Then came the image of Ali Akbar returning from the battlefield, overcome by thirst after fighting beneath the relentless desert sun. As the zakir recited the traditional narration, Imam Husayn removed the ring from his finger and placed it in his son’s mouth, praying that he would soon meet his grandfather, the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.), who would quench his thirst with a drink after which he would never thirst again.

I had never seen this moment with my own eyes.

Yet through the cadence of the marsiya, it became one of the clearest images my mind had ever held.

That is the extraordinary power of marsiya.

It does not merely narrate Karbala.

It allows those who never witnessed Ashura to become its witnesses.

The recitation moved on.

Its rhythm slowed, and without anyone announcing it, every mourner inside the aza khana knew which chapter of Karbala was about to unfold.

Hazrat Abbas (A.S.).

If Imam Husayn (A.S.) is the soul of Karbala, Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) is its unwavering standard. Every Muharram, as the zakir reaches his story, I find myself returning to the banks of the Euphrates—not through memory, but through imagination shaped by centuries of marsiya.

The verses describe the standard-bearer making his way towards the river after days of unbearable thirst had consumed the camp. Inside the tents, children waited with fading hope, their lips parched and their eyes fixed on the path their uncle had taken. Among them was Bibi Sakina (A.S.), whose innocent faith in her uncle has become one of the most heartbreaking images preserved in Kashmiri marsiya.

As the zakir recites, I no longer hear only words.

I see the Euphrates shimmering beneath the blazing sun.

I watch Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) kneel beside the river. After days without water, he cups the water in his hands. For a brief moment, relief is within his reach.

Then the marsiya pauses.

How could Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) drink while Imam Husayn (A.S.) remained thirsty?

How could he satisfy his own thirst while the children cried inside the tents?

The water slips through his fingers and returns to the Euphrates.

That single image has echoed through centuries. It is not simply the refusal to drink. It is loyalty in its purest form—a moment where love became greater than thirst itself.

The mashk is filled.

Hope begins its journey back towards the camp.

Inside the tents, little children still wait. Bibi Sakina (A.S.) still believes her uncle will return with water.

But Karbala was destined to test love beyond imagination.

The verses darken.

An arrow tears through the mashk.

Water spills onto the burning sands before reaching the camp.

Then comes the first blow.

One blessed arm is severed.

The standard trembles but does not fall.

The second arm is struck.

Yet Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) continues to protect the mashk, holding it against his chest with whatever strength remains. Even in those final moments, his concern is not for his own wounds, but for the promise he had made to the thirsty children.

Every Muharram, as these verses are recited, I realise I am witnessing more than courage.

I am witnessing the highest expression of selflessness.

The battlefield slowly fades.

The marsiya returns to the tents.

There stands Bibi Sakina (A.S.).

She carries no sword.

She wears no armour.

She simply waits.

The zakir needs only a few verses to create an image that no camera could ever capture.

A thirsty child lifts the curtain of the tent again and again, looking towards the horizon, convinced that her uncle will soon return carrying water.

Every passing moment strengthens hope.

Then hope slowly dissolves into silence.

Every time I hear these verses, I find myself looking towards that same horizon with her.

Marsiya reminds us that the deepest wounds of Karbala belonged equally to its children.

The recitation slows once more.

Silence settles over the gathering.

No father inside the aza khana is ever prepared for what comes next, no matter how many times he has heard it.

Hazrat Ali Asghar (A.S.).

A six-month-old infant.

Too young to speak.

Too young even to understand the meaning of thirst.

The zakir narrates how Imam Husayn (A.S.) carried his youngest son towards the enemy—not seeking victory, but asking for a few drops of water for a thirsty child whose only crime was belonging to the household of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.).

The answer came in the form of an arrow.

The entire aza khana falls silent.

Even the zakir pauses.

I close my eyes.

I imagine Imam Husayn (A.S.) holding the lifeless body of his infant against his chest.

No father should ever have to experience such grief.

Then another image unfolds before me through the marsiya.

The battlefield has emptied.

No companions remain.

No brothers remain.

No sons remain

As narrated in the marsiya tradition, Imam Husayn (A.S.) prepares a tiny grave for Hazrat Ali Asghar (A.S.), loosening the earth with the point of his sword before gently laying his infant to rest.

I have photographed fathers burying their children in Kashmir.

I know what grief looks like when words disappear.

Yet no photograph I have ever taken has remained with me as vividly as this image created entirely through poetry.

It is perhaps the clearest picture I have never actually seen.

One farewell follows another.

One martyr after another leaves the battlefield.

The desert grows quieter with every verse.

Then the zakir turns towards Lady Zainab (A.S.).

If Imam Husayn (A.S.) embodied sacrifice, Lady Zainab (A.S.) embodied endurance.

I imagine her standing outside the tents, watching every brother, nephew, son and companion depart for a battlefield from which none would return.

History remembers her not only for her grief, but for her strength.

Karbala ended on Ashura.

Its message survived because Lady Zainab (A.S.) carried it forward with unmatched courage, transforming mourning into testimony and sacrifice into an everlasting message

Listening to the marsiya, I realise that courage is not always found on the battlefield.

Sometimes the greatest courage belongs to those who survive in order to bear witness.

Finally, the zakir reaches the last moments of Imam Husayn (A.S.).

The battlefield is silent.

The companions have all been martyred.

The tents stand behind him.

Before him waits an army.

He is alone.

Yet he remains unshaken.

The marsiya does not need to describe every detail.

Our imagination completes what the verses leave unsaid.

Then comes the image that marks the end of every Muharram gathering.

Zuljanah returns.

Without its rider.

Its saddle is empty.

Its body is covered with dust.

Its return tells the entire story before a single word is spoken.

The cries inside the aza khana become impossible to restrain.

The horse has returned.

Imam Husayn (A.S.) has not

At that moment, I realise that although I have never travelled to Karbala, I have returned from it every Muharram of my life.

Through the voices of Kashmiri zakirs, the poetry of marsiya, and the collective imagination of mourners gathered around the farsh-e-aza, I have walked a land my eyes have never seen, yet my heart has known since childhood.

Every Muharram teaches me that Karbala is not remembered because we were present there.

It is remembered because, through marsiya, we continue to become its witnesses.

I originally pitched this photo feature to a few publications, but I haven’t heard back from them so far. That’s part of the process, but I also didn’t want the work to just sit quietly in my drafts after everything I’ve seen and carried while making it.

So I’m sharing it here on Substack.

As an independent freelance journalist, I often find myself moving between fieldwork, pitching stories and long stretches of waiting on replies that sometimes never come. In that space, stories can easily lose their moment. Substack gives me a way to put the work out directly, in full and let it exist in public while it still feels close to where it came from.

Inside a modest workshop in Lal Bazar on the outskirts of Srinagar, the sound of chisels striking walnut wood echoes softly through the room. Thin layers of wood dust settle over unfinished carvings, tools, and framed certificates hanging on faded walls. Sunlight enters through a small window and falls across floral patterns slowly emerging from dark walnut timber beneath the hands of Haji Abdul Aziz Bazaz.

Around him are decades of labour preserved in silence — carved panels, unfinished motifs, hand tools darkened with age, and awards earned through a lifetime devoted to Kashmiri handicrafts. Some certificates hang carefully framed beside photographs from exhibitions and travels abroad. Others remain stacked quietly in corners of the workshop, almost secondary to the work itself.

Bazaz bends closely over a walnut panel, tracing another design by hand before carving begins. Every movement appears slow, measured, and practiced through years of repetition.

For him, handicraft was never simply employment. It began as fascination during childhood and gradually became the centre of his life.

Today, Bazaz is widely recognised for walnut wood carving, though his knowledge extends across multiple Kashmiri art traditions including shawl weaving, carpet making, papier-mâché, and sozni embroidery. His signature work combines the delicate floral patterns of Kashmiri Pashmina shawls with walnut wood carving — a style that earned him the prestigious Shilp Guru Award in 2012 along with several state and national recognitions over the years.

Yet his story is larger than individual achievement. It is rooted in a centuries-old cultural relationship linking Kashmir with Hamadan in Iran.

One of the most influential figures shaping this connection was Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, the revered Sufi saint born in Hamadan, Persia (present-day Iran) in 1314 AD. Hamadan was then an important centre of Islamic scholarship and learning. Shah-e-Hamadan mastered theology, philosophy, metaphysics, and Sufism at a young age before travelling extensively across Persia and Central Asia in pursuit of knowledge and spiritual practice.

Historical accounts describe how he arrived in Kashmir three times during the 14th century, accompanied by hundreds of followers including artisans and craftsmen. Many historians believe these craftsmen introduced artistic traditions such as wood carving, shawl weaving, carpet making, papier-mâché, pottery, and calligraphy into the valley.

Over centuries, these crafts became inseparable from Kashmir’s cultural identity and economy. The influence of Persian aesthetics slowly blended into local traditions, shaping architecture, textiles, shrines, and decorative arts across the region. Kashmir eventually came to be described by poets and scholars as a “miniature Iran” because of these artistic and cultural continuities.

Sitting among carved walnut panels inside his workshop, Bazaz reflects on this inherited history with deep pride.

“Shah-e-Hamadan came from Hamadan and introduced these arts to Kashmir,” he says. “Later, I got the chance to visit Iran and see their artwork closely. Their culture resembles ours in many ways.”

Bazaz has travelled to 16 countries representing Kashmiri art, carrying walnut carvings and handcrafted works beyond the valley that shaped them. Among those journeys, his visit to Iran remained especially meaningful.

For him, Hamadan was not simply another destination. It felt familiar.

“They also have walnut trees there,” he explains. “But I found Kashmiri wood carving finer in detail and technique. If we compare this art form, Kashmir stands at the top. But the roots of this art came from Hamadan.”

Even while speaking proudly about Kashmiri craftsmanship, admiration remains visible in his voice. He recalls Persian sozni embroidery and carpet weaving with respect, describing them as some of the finest artistic traditions in the world.

His travels eventually brought him to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, fulfilling a personal dream he carried for years.

“I always wanted to pray there,” he says quietly.

Back inside the workshop in Srinagar, his life returns each day to walnut wood.

The process begins with selecting the right material. Bazaz sources walnut wood mainly from Anantnag in South Kashmir, where walnut trees remain widely available. According to him, the quality of wood determines the soul of the final artwork.

After selecting the timber, the wood must dry properly before carving can begin. He then traces patterns carefully onto the surface before slowly shaping designs by hand. Every stage — shaping, polishing, tracing, carving — is completed manually.

Some artworks take days. Others require weeks or months.

As he speaks, unfinished panels lean against the workshop walls, revealing countless hours hidden within each design. Dense floral patterns emerge slowly across the walnut surface, demanding concentration, patience, and physical endurance.

“There are hundreds of designs in this art,” he says while running his fingers gently across carved walnut patterns. “Gold has a price, but this wood carving has no price.”

For Bazaz, value is measured through time and emotional attachment rather than market demand alone. The longer he spends creating a piece, the more difficult it becomes to part with it.

“When I finish an artwork, I don’t feel like selling it,” he admits. “I did not learn this art for money. I learned it to keep it alive and to respect who we are.”

That relationship between artisan and object becomes visible throughout the workshop. Every carving carries traces of labour, repetition, and memory. Some pieces appear almost architectural in detail, while others resemble woven shawl patterns transformed into wood.

The workshop itself feels less like a commercial studio and more like a living archive.

Students occasionally arrive to observe his technique. His son continues learning under his guidance, slowly inheriting the same tradition passed through generations.

Yet alongside pride, Bazaz also carries concern.

Despite the global market for Kashmiri handicrafts, he worries that fewer young people are willing to dedicate themselves to such demanding work.

“This art needs patience,” he explains. “People want quick work now. But wood carving takes time, hard labour, and concentration.”

According to him, the number of artisans continues decreasing every year.

“If there are 200 artisans today, many will disappear in the coming years because young people are not learning this work anymore.”

He describes wood carving as physically exhausting compared to many other crafts. Long hours are spent shaping timber by hand while covered in wood dust. The process demands physical endurance alongside creativity and precision.

“God taught me this artwork,” he says proudly. “It depends on the creative mind of an artisan. Whoever has vision can create good artwork.”

Before moving to Lal Bazar, Bazaz practiced his craft near the historic Khanqah shrine in downtown Srinagar, a place deeply associated with Shah-e-Hamadan and Kashmir’s spiritual history. Even now, that connection between spirituality and craftsmanship remains central to how he understands his work.

For him, craft is not decoration alone. It is identity, inheritance, discipline, and devotion carried across centuries.

Despite declining health, Bazaz continues teaching anyone interested in learning, often without charging money.

“I am not teaching only my son,” he says. “Anyone can come here and learn. My motive is not money. My motive is to keep this artwork alive for future generations.”

As evening slowly falls over the workshop, unfinished walnut panels remain leaning against the walls beneath hanging awards and fading photographs from journeys across the world. Outside, Kashmir continues changing rapidly with time. Inside, centuries of memory still survive quietly beneath the hands of an ageing artisan carving patterns first carried to the valley from Hamadan long ago.

Nobody tells you what happens after you get close enough.

Nobody tells you about the emails that go unanswered, the invoices that remain unpaid, the stories that never find a publisher, or the quiet uncertainty that follows every assignment. They celebrate the photograph, the publication, the award, the byline. They rarely see the person behind it trying to build a life and make an honest living through journalism.

I entered journalism believing that stories mattered. Growing up in a middle-class family in Kashmir, I understood early that nothing came easily. Education was supposed to provide stability, and like many others I completed my studies hoping that hard work would eventually create opportunities. Instead, I chose journalism and photography, a profession that offered meaning but very little certainty. I wanted to tell stories, document realities, and contribute something honest to the world. What I did not understand then was how difficult it would be to build a life around that decision.

Over the years, my work took me through villages, towns, conflict zones, shrines, protests, and communities whose stories rarely made headlines.. I spent countless days speaking with people whose lives would never make headlines on their own. I documented grief, resilience, survival, faith and everyday existence. Each story required time, patience, and commitment. Sometimes it required risking personal safety. Often it required spending money I did not have. Yet the real challenge was never producing the work. The challenge began once the story was finished.

A freelance journalist lives in a constant state of uncertainty. You pitch ideas that matter deeply to you and wait. Sometimes the response never comes. Sometimes an editor rejects the story without explanation. Sometimes the publication wants the work but has no budget. You begin to realize that finding a story is easier than finding someone willing to pay fairly for it. The industry constantly talks about the importance of journalism, yet many journalists struggle to survive within it.

The hardest part is watching others benefit from your labor while you remain stuck in the same place. There were times when I felt people were building careers on the backs of freelancers who carried the burden of reporting from the ground. The photographer travels, researches, documents, edits, writes, and delivers. The publication receives content. The audience receives information. The journalist receives another promise of payment, another delay, or sometimes nothing at all. It can leave you with the feeling that people are climbing higher while standing on your shoulders.

Photography itself became difficult to sustain financially. There came a point when I realized that journalism alone could not support me. That was when I began selling my artwork. To others, these prints are photographs hanging on a wall. To me, they represent years of work, miles traveled, conversations held, and sacrifices made. Selling prints was never part of the original plan, but it became necessary. It allowed me to continue working, continue reporting, and continue believing that there was still value in what I was doing.

There were evenings when I sat with a cheap cigarette simply because it gave me a reason to stop for a moment. Smoking was never the point. Thinking was. Those few minutes became a space where I could reflect on the stories I had witnessed, the pitches I had sent, and the uncertain future ahead. Journalism had taught me how the world works, but it had also exposed me to the uncomfortable reality that truth and financial security do not always exist together.

Eventually, survival pushed me toward editing stories. I found myself spending more time in front of screens than behind cameras. I edited videos, produced stories for others, and adapted to a different role within the industry. It helped me earn a living, but it also came with its own cost. Long hours indoors replaced days in the field. Deadlines replaced journeys. The work continued, but the connection felt different. It was another compromise made in order to stay afloat.

What remains unchanged is the belief that stories matter. Even now, when the profession feels exhausting, I cannot imagine abandoning it completely. Journalism has given me some of my greatest struggles, but it has also given me purpose. It has allowed me to witness lives that would otherwise remain unseen. It has shown me humanity at its most fragile and most resilient.

I do not know whether journalism will ever repay what it has taken from me. I do know that long after the invoices, emails, and disappointments are forgotten, the photographs will remain. They will exist as evidence—not only of the people and places I documented, but also of the struggle behind the camera.
