For my job, I interview people from around the world who want to study design in New York City. I ask them to imagine they have a magic wand and can design anything they wish. Once a young woman answered: ‘Actually, I have real magic. I am Snow White.’ It turns out she acts the princesses at Disneyland Shanghai. I told her this was very good practice for becoming an enchanting designer.

I look after an elderly dog named Oscar who lives next to my office. I met him last spring at a Colombian bakery, when he nuzzled my knees and I sensed he was ill. We’ve stayed friends ever since and he continues to press his soft countenance into my lap when he visits me at work. This must be how older dogs give hugs.

2. Something that happened

My son and I ordered sandwiches at a cafe in SoHo where lots of young, chic people spend all day on video calls with other young, chic people working from cafes. We hurried to get a garden seat and left the order number for our table at the counter. So I ran back to the 20-something-year-old barista and flustered: “Hi! I wanted to let you know that I left my number at the counter.” He gave me an awkward stare as he frothed oat milk.

Then I realized my misstep, “Oh I’m so sorry! I left my ORDER NUMBER at the counter. I would never leave my telephone number to go on a date with you because I know I’m way older than you and I have a really nice boyfriend, thank you.” And with that, he handed me a steel number six and shortly afterwards, toasted croissant sandwiches arrived at our garden table.

Rui had a cold and had to miss our dear friend’s farm wedding. In his absence, I brought his stuffed sheep, Big Sheepie, to stand in as my date and to send him ridiculous photographs while he stayed home. I tried convincing Big Sheepie to wear a different dress since it’s rude to wear white to a wedding, but she’s pretty stubborn.

2. Something that happened

Last week, an older gentleman asked me for help on 7th Avenue. I had just picked up lunch at Le Pain Quotidien and offered him my lentil soup, avocado salad, and a side of super-seed bread. I saw his sad face, “You don’t like this kind of food, do you?” He nodded and asked if we could go to a bodega. There, he picked out a chocolate chip cookie, chocolate milk and a pack of Newport Lights. I picked up the bill and it came to $30, which was the exact same price as my fancy lunch. So on paper, we ate the same meal.

This dollhouse was once in the trash in SoHo, but starting September 4th it will be in the storefront of a stylish bed store in SoHo. My son and I painted it pink and are making pink beds and sewing pink sheets. We’ll be sure to invite you to the opening party, which may or may not include a tiny, pink pillow fight.

The other day at the 23rd Street subway stop, a muscly man offered to carry a double stroller down the steps for a new mother. She held baby twins in her arms and thanked the muscly man for his help. But the muscly man didn’t stop there. He asked the woman, “Are these your babies?” She stared blankly and replied, “Yes, they came out of my body two weeks ago.” Then he looked her up and down and exclaimed, “Wow, you look great!” As I walked away, I thought how in the eyes of many men, women are meat.

We spent a week in Vermont to be around cows and cartoonists. I bought this fresh milk for my son’s breakfast. He marveled at the cloudy cream and wondered if it was spoiled. I told him that I must have made a mistake and bought milk from the cow aisle, and this is the extra creamy stuff that only baby cows get to drink. He didn’t believe me at first because he said baby cows don’t drink from bottles. But I set him straight, ‘Yes they do when their moms have to go on business trips.’ We left it there.

2. Something that happened

When I became a mom and spent around 5,000 hours holding a crying infant at cafes, post offices, and supermarkets, moms with older kids would smile at me and tell me, ‘It’s all going to fly by like this!’ And they’d snap their fingers and tell me to enjoy every moment because in no time my child would be a teenager eating a giant pizza all by himself. I would gaze back at these moms and think, no way ladies. But now I get it. It feels like the past 12 years just passed by in 12 minutes.

This is a snapshot of December 6th to 12th in the year 2020. During lockdown, my son and I drew a plan for the week to feel less insane. I like that the Tooth Fairy is scheduled for Tuesday, a weaving party for Saturday, and knitting a scarf for Sunday.

2. Something that happened

When my son turned 10, I bought him a blue ‘sacoche’ from Muji and stuffed it with essentials: tissues, pens, a notebook, bandaids, a pocket knife, a flashlight small enough for a snail to use, ear plugs, an epipen, $20, etc. I also included accoutrements like a tiny pickle, a whistle, and a picture of Buddha. This seemed like a more delightful collection of things for a kid to carry around the world than a phone. I was also hoping he would stop asking me for a tissue.

This is my mother and brother at Edinburgh Castle. My mom is wearing kitten heals, a Burberry trench coat, and a Louis Vuitton purse called “Le Papillon.” She’s also carrying both her kids’ raincoats. Forty years later, when I stomped around castles in Edinburgh with my son, I wore clogs, a Muji raincoat and a BAGGU crossbody. Only now do I realize how much my mom was suffering.

I hope that this week someone wearing clogs picks you up and carries you and your raincoat to a nearby castle.

I grew up in an affluent suburb of New York City thinking that life was suffering because the cool, rich kids thought I was poor and unattractive. So when I went to college and could choose where to study abroad, I thought that I should try suffering in new places with more interesting kinds of suffering. That’s why I went to Russia. I was also in love with Tolstoy, but he wasn’t home by the time I got there.

This is my Russian notebook from when I was 19. Apparently I was learning how to say things like “by no means,” “void,” and “to embody.” And then I mostly forgot it all. I can still yell at you for stealing my newspaper, wish for our dogs to be friends and order two kilograms of cheese, but I have no idea what happened to the rest of my vocabulary. I’m sure the same exact thing has happened to you at least twice.

I hope that this week you suddenly remember how much you have forgotten and decide to eat two kilograms of cheese.

When iPads came out in 2010, I vowed to never touch one. When my son was born in 2013, I vowed to never let him touch one. I think our lives have been pretty great without them. But when my son was two, my mom really wanted to buy him an iPad and I said, “No way, lady.” She then likened me to a war criminal.

I wrote this piece with 1,000 links to things that I prefer my child do with technology rather than murder zombies in Fortnite or build casinos in Roblox. I am waiting for someone to write me and tell me that I am a big show-off. And when they do, I will say, “Thank you. You have a point.”

He’s also never played Roblox or Minecraft. He’s actually never watched YouTube or been on Instagram or TikTok. He’s also never asked Alexa for help with his homework or a chatbot to be his friend. And no, he doesn’t have a phone.

My kid is by no means a luddite. He uses lots of tech, just not the addictive kind. He calls friends on his Tin Can. He uses PhotoShop to make collages. He plays and makes pixel-art games in PICO-8. He makes custom playlists for his Yoto Player and mixes moody tracks on a MIDI. He takes pictures with a Polaroid and listens to Graceland on a Peanuts cassette player. He uses a copier to make zines. And last year for his birthday, he asked for a lock-picking set, so he can help you out if you forget your keys.

I am not against technology. But I am against mindless, dopamine-inducing, unsafe software designed to monetize attention and anxiety. Sadly, there is an abundance of addictive tech targeted at children. Over the past decade, I’ve made it my job to become a curator of non-toxic tech to protect my kid’s imagination, health and happiness. Because I want him to have a relationship with tech that is creative, not co-dependent or creepy.

Here are a few offerings of tech and tools at different stages that nurtured his sense of wonder and self. There’s so much more I didn’t include, so please write to me for more specific suggestions.

Age 0–3 | A material world

Clay, sticks, rice, coffee beans, pompoms, pencils, straws, toilet-paper rolls, feathers, etc. are the perfect technology at this age. Gravity and the relationship between cause and effect are pretty fascinating to discover. My son was enchanted by fans, the washing machine and blowing rogue duvet feathers into the air for hours. For little kids, the world is their screen. But in a real pinch when my son was a toddler, I let him watch short episodes of Barbapapa, a French blob-family of nature-lovers and shapeshifters from the 1970s. If there are moments when you’re the sole caregiver AND you have food poisoning, letting your kid watch Barbapapa can be a relief.

Age 4–7 | Books, puzzles and digital toys

Apart from maze books, board games and puzzles, there was a small collection of apps on my phone or computer reserved for situations like long flights, a distraction while getting a shot or blood drawn, and of course, working from home during lockdown. Here are a few beautiful digital toys that feature hand-drawn art designed for exploration, not gamification.

Skyscrapers, yurts, coral reefs, clouds and noses. This collection of uniquely illustrated landscapes invite kids to explore the natural and built worlds.

Guess what? We still play with toys, dolls, blocks and sticks. The scenarios have become more elaborate and ridiculous (e.g. all the stuffed animals are in therapy and most of the mice have joined a Lucha-Libre style wrestling federation). We’ve also integrated more sophisticated media and games with a total time limit of two hours on weekends. That seems more than fair.

If you want your kids to practice 2D and 3D spatial reasoning skills without the gambling and stalking of Minecraft and Roblox, let them design you a new dream kitchen.

Hey Kids, Watch This!
Instead of browsing Netflix, use this book (from A24) to find excellent films from across geographies and decades to suit kids of different tastes and ages. Among our favorites is Zazie Dans Le Metro, about a “foul-mouthed provincial girl” who spends the weekend in Paris with her uncle while her mom absconds with a new boyfriend. Typical.

Columbo
We use Plex to curate libraries of videos and movies that my son can watch without any ads or algorithms (on our projector, not a television!). Our library features all 10 seasons of Columbo, because Peter Falk is terrific: an unassumingly brilliant detective who takes down playboy-scoundrels, fueled by his love for chili and Mrs. Columbo. I can’t think of a better role model.

Sherlock Holmes: The Complete BBC Collection
You can listen to all 60 Sherlock Holmes tales adapted for radio drama with intense accents, bombastic foley, and a moody violin. Perfect for road trips and rainy days at home.

Nintendo Labo
Build your own game controllers out of cardboard (e.g. a cardboard steering wheel, a cardboard fishing rod, a cardboard robot jet pack, etc.) and practice your paper engineering and reckless driving skills in serene cities and lands. Bill Nye loves Nintendo Labo and incidentally, we have every Bill Nye the Science Guy episode in our Plex library.

Pico 8
Join this community to play and make tiny pixel games. Every day in December a new mini game or art piece made by community members gets released. This past holiday season, we enjoyed Midnight Blue, a five-minute jaunt through snowy skies to collect the stars.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
I find no objections to this sassy, novel-adventure game featuring an ingenue prosecutor in a kangaroo court. My son is allowed to play this game on Saturdays for one hour and he loves it so much that he now wants to become a lawyer. Sustained!

Parents ask me how I “stop” my kid from going onto YouTube or social media? The answer is, I don’t have to, because we don’t have any devices lying around. We have a projector that we set up to watch movies from our Plex library (instead of a TV). And I mostly use a Light Phone 3 and there are no games, apps, or nonsense on this phone because it’s just a boring phone and no kid would ever want to play with it.

When my son was two, I told him that roasted garlic was candy, that a washing machine was a television, and that when you see someone in a restaurant drinking wine, you must be very, very quiet and whisper the word “ambiance” three times. He believed all of these things for a very long time. And I don’t regret making these things up because let’s face it: everything is made up.

When I was 10, my mother decided I looked too Chinese. Half was too much. I think she would have preferred 15-25%. She decided that the most Chinese thing about me was my straight, black hair. She convinced Giuliano, the expensive, head colorist at the Neiman Marcus salon, to accept me as his youngest customer. But there were conditions. Besides the $325 for highlights and $150 for a perm, I was not to move and I was not to talk. You see, Giuliano loved hair, but he hated children. I also had to miss school because Giuliano hated working weekends.

Last week, I got to help my auntie declutter her apartment in Honolulu. This is a picture of my Chinese and Hawaiian great-aunties from the early 1900s that was in a pile of papers. These ladies could not talk or move when they were getting their expensive portrait taken. The Chinese aunties got to look super Chinese, while the Hawaiian auntie got to look a little Hawaiian, but mostly Edwardian.

We stopped at McDonald’s in Kaneohe to use the bathroom. There was a small family of chickens circling the grassy area between the drive-thru and the parking lot. The hen defended her chick against a pigeon. The rooster fought another pigeon over a hamburger bun. It seems that conditions both inside and outside of McDonald’s are not ideal for raising a chicken family.

Hawaii is so beautiful that it makes me miss the grime of New York City. I apologize in advance that this is the dirtiest street corner I could find in Honolulu. I also thought it was important to note that my son and I now have the same shoe size.

2. Something that happened

I dreamt of a new genre of blowdryer. It was the shape of a bullhorn and it could play sounds of NYC traffic or Hudson River birds as it shot out hot air. I tried it out on bird mode and while it was pleasant, it didn’t quite dry my hair. So I don’t recommend buying it in your dreams, but maybe there’s a waking-life version coming out soon that will work much better.

We are going to visit our homeland in the Hawaiian Islands today. Of course, the most difficult packing decision was what stuffed animals to bring. Then finally it clicked: one native animal and one invasive animal. Both come in peace.

My dad died two years ago, but he still visits me in my dreams. Sometimes he is doing mundane stuff, like watching a movie on his computer in the basement or trying to get a good table at a restaurant. Other times he appears otherworldly, with a necklace of moss around his shirt collar or wearing monk robes. Every time he appears in my dreams, I remind him that he is dead. He disagrees: “I am not dead, I am dad.”

I moved to a new apartment this week, so I am short on poem-writing time and way over budget on examining-every-single-item-I-own time. In no particular order, here are a few treasures.

This cotton napkin once had a fat blue stripe down the center (you can see traces of it if you squint). I got it in 2016 at Pottery Barn on 7th Avenue and 16th Street. At the time, I didn’t have much money and I wondered if it was an extravagance. It’s now my favorite soft cloth to dry the water bowls of my shrine, so I think it was worth it.

I bought this nightgown at Bloomingdales in 1983. This is the first night I wore it and it was long on me because I used to be a shrimp. Now it rests under my pillow as I sleep. Yes, the nightgown is a woman and she has a name: Hueco Goyo. She is very soft and likes to hide from me.

I own almost every Maira Kalman book because let’s face it: the woman is a genius. I also recently started tying scarves on my head like an Eastern European grandmother because it helps keep pollen out of my hair. I also think it makes me look more helpful.

My Venezuelan family gave me the middle name, Maria,

I sat next to two ladies meeting for breakfast at a vegan cafe. They greeted each other and immediately acknowledged that they were both wearing baseball caps because they had lasers shot into the dermis cells of their faces earlier that week. I set a timer on my phone to see how long they would chat about radiating different parts of their bodies (approximately 6 minutes and 48 seconds). I guess lasers are naturally vegan.

We’re moving this week. A giant truck will carry away all of our human possessions. And a tiny truck driven by a squirrel will move all of our doll furniture. Because it’s New York City, the squirrel charges the same price of course.

2. Something that happened

I need a picture of my heart taken to see how much plaque is in there because I am paranoid of heart attacks. The nice lady on the phone who booked my echocardiogram gave me the following instructions:
- Arrive 30 minutes early
- Don’t engage in strenuous exercise on that day
- Don’t drink caffeine or take amphetamines at least 4 hours before my arrival

I replied, “So, let me get this straight. I am going to wake up early and not drink coffee. Then I am going to walk slowly to the hospital and not stop to do cocaine on the way there?” She said, “Yes, exactly.” Then we both laughed and wished each other a great day.

[Left] I found this note stuck to the intercom in my lobby. Apparently Fred and Betty don’t check their phones. Or maybe they lost their phones. Or perhaps even better, they have never ever had phones. [Right] Here is a poem I wrote when I was 10 about my telephone brooch. At that time, I thought both my poem and costume jewelry were really cool.
