Every object occupied a place known only to her, every habit part of a carefully maintained system.

Unfortunately, today's circumstances demanded she abandon that system. What little time remained left no room for routine.

She hurried through her preparations. Breathless and flustered, she entered the room, already defeated.

The interviewer would see only the outcome: the disheveled appearance, the tardiness, the lack of composure. They would never witness the struggle that had begun long before she stepped through the door.

In recent times, the term "neurodivergence" has been gaining considerable traction. As more and more people begin to find in these clinical diagnostics a language for liberation, self-understanding, and acceptance, an urgent need arises — for a society better equipped to accommodate this growing demographic without retreating into controversy, mischaracterization, or the kind of willful ignorance that transforms a conversation about human difference into a battleground.

Neurodivergence is a non-medical term used to describe people whose brains process or develop differently from those of the typical majority. Conditions include, but are not limited to, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, OCD, and Tourette's syndrome. Neurotypical, by contrast, describes individuals whose brains develop and function in ways that allow them to exhibit, with relative ease, the behaviors generally expected and accepted within wider society.

Both terms fall under the broader concept of neurodiversity — the idea that people experience and interact with the world in fundamentally different ways, and that there is no single correct way of thinking, learning, or behaving. Differences, under this framework, are not deficits. They are variations.

The Unseen Battle

The neurodiversity movement asserts that every neurodivergent condition is a natural part of human neurological diversity — not a disease or disorder, simply a difference. The drawback of this perspective is that it tends to overlook and diminish the adverse effects these conditions have on the lives of those affected. To many neurodivergent individuals, the experience is less one of being "differently abled" and more one of living with a severe and often debilitating reality — one that remains, to the casual observer, entirely invisible.

It isn't farfetched to say that the neurodivergent individual may sometimes feel that those with physical disabilities are, in one specific sense, better positioned — because on top of navigating their own challenges, they are not always burdened with the added exhaustion of explaining their predicament to a world that cannot see it. The visibility of their condition makes it easy for others to quickly grasp the ways it hinders them, one is even able to go beyond the physically perceived limitations their disability imposes, and consider other ways it may manifest, with little to no communication.

However, when it comes to neurodivergent individuals, the reverse is the case; Their conditions are not physically perceived — only their symptoms are, or more precisely, the reactions to those symptoms. And it just so happens that the majority of these symptoms overlap with experiences that are, to varying degrees, a general part of the human experience. This forms one of the most intricately woven layers of misunderstanding between divergents and typicals.

When the Mind Becomes an Adversary

We regard the mind as an extension of the self—a vessel through which intention is translated into action. Our actions are largely influenced by our thoughts. We think, hence we act. We decide, therefore we do. Yet for the divergent person, this relationship is far less harmonious. Thoughts arise unbidden, attention wanders despite earnest attempts to restrain it, and emotions linger long after reason has deemed them unworthy of concern. There's a peculiar dissonance in simultaneously being the thinker and the spectator, issuing commands only to watch them dissipate before they can take form. In such moments, the struggle is not against circumstance, nor against expectation, but against the mind itself; a companion whose workings are intimately familiar, yet seldom fully understood.

This internal turmoil, tends to manifest in ways as such:

Awakening to the promise of a new day, the day's activities already planned out, everything is set in motion and proceeds according to plan—until an unexpected occurrence disrupts the carefully maintained routine. Plummeting momentum that has painstakingly been built over hours or even days, while amplifying cognitive and sensory demands on an extra stimuli-receptive mind. To most people, such an interruption might seem like a minor inconvenience or a trivial deviation from plan. To the neurodivergent individual, however, it can become the first domino in a chain reaction, culminating in burnout, shutdowns, or meltdowns arising not from the disruption itself, but from sensory overload and the exhausting, involuntary process of repeated mental recalibrations in order to accommodate an ever-changing environment.

Awareness of the task at hand, certainty of the steps to be taken, acknowledgement of the rewards for completion — for the regular person, possession of all this information would be more than enough to prompt action, but for some, it still reads as insufficient. Adding a hint of urgency tends to serve as a catalyst, but it usually comes with a cost— stress that slowly accumulates, never failing to take its toll. The gap between knowing what to do and actively taking steps toward it is usually occupied by negotiations between the individual and their own brain, over how much access to bodily and motor function is granted.

A chronic intermittent forgetfulness and it's resultant lack of coordination in task management that renders the idiom “out of sight, out of mind” a literal truth. Making efforts to preserve concurrently occurring tasks in working memory, genuinely resemble a cowboy attempting to lasso and restrain multiple raging bulls simultaneously.

Assume you're working on a task, then suddenly you're asked to attend to something else, a bit more pressing and somewhat time consuming, so you put the task on hold to handle the new one, while in the process, your attention is called to something else to be taken care of upon completion of the newly assigned task.

The typical ADHDer — particularly the inattentive type — would find themselves in a situation that causes them to expend significant mental energy in a deliberate, conscious effort to keep their wandering mind in check.

These examples are just a few out of the broad spectrum of neurodivergent experience—of when the mind seems to have a mind of it's own.

The Tyranny of Normality

In sociology, scholars of the functionalist school of thought hold the view that human society can be likened to a living organism, such that it is composed of different parts (social institutions) that perform various roles and functions in order to maintain homeostasis. Institutions such as family, education, government, religion, and economy are identified to each perform crucial roles, to maintain order and stability. Like cogs in a machine, they work interdependently, to define and maintain a state of normalcy.

From this perspective, normal behaviour is not merely a preference or status quo, it is functional.

Educational institutions reward sustained attention, standardized learning, linear thinking, and timed performance. They function most efficiently when students sit still, follow instructions, adhere to schedules, and learn at roughly similar rates. Workplaces value punctuality, consistency, multitasking, and performance under pressure. They function most efficiently when employees arrive on time, communicate predictably, and maintain consistent productivity. Society therefore develops norms that encourage these behaviors, because they contribute to social stability.

The problem emerges when functionality becomes morality — when normal becomes synonymous with correct, healthy, intelligent, responsible, and valuable.

Normality has always been treated as an objective standard, but in reality it is largely a statistical and social construct. A behavior is considered normal because it is common, expected, or convenient for the majority. If it contributes to social stability, it is deemed good. If it disrupts social stability, it is deemed problematic. This creates a dilemma for divergent people, because their differences may not be harmful in themselves, but they may conflict with the expectations upon which institutions are built.

The issue lies not in the existence of norms, but in the belief that deviation from them is a defect. A society built around the average inevitably creates outliers, yet too often it treats those outliers as errors to be corrected rather than variations to be understood. For the neurodivergent individual, the struggle is rarely against normality itself, but against a system that mistakes normality for universality.

And as always is, the plight of every demographic minority, the divergent individual finds themself in a world, subject to the quiet unyielding tyranny of normality.

When Worlds Collide

“What is wrong with me?”

This is a question, I'm certain, that hasn't failed1 to cross the mind of many neurodivergent individuals at some point in their lives.

Seemingly harmless, yet gravely dangerous. It bears the underlying assumption that everyone else's way of functioning is the correct way, profoundly emphasizing a negative acknowledgement of one's otherness.

In cases where peculiar qualities are celebrated and appreciated, difference becomes distinction—something to be proud of. But when these differences attract labels like weird, strange, or quirky, it is often seen as a defect. Many divergent people have lived their whole lives carrying these labels around like weights placed upon their shoulders, some learned to imitate the normal way to behave and present themselves accordingly, concealing their real identities like wanted fugitives on the run.

It becomes worse when the what is clear, but the why is obscure, when the difference is obvious, but the reason is a mystery. Knowing what is wrong but not having an explanation for it. And even more so when the need for an explanation becomes more important than addressing the root cause. This explains the relief that comes with a diagnosis: like a package handed to the individual to neatly contain all the various baggage that society has thrust upon them—all the labels contained, in one neat little package.

But it doesn't end there, the problem has been named, an explanation has been discovered, but the root cause still exists—not the individual, but the world they find themselves in.

So when internal turmoil meets external expectations, when high sensory receptiveness meets systemic chaos, when a chronically wandering mind meets a conformity demanding world — the result is a person who spent their whole life learning to do what comes easily to others, trying to function against the natural configuration of their brain, always wearing a mask that changes to suit occasion, mimicking normal behavior, while actively suppressing their own, compelling themself to deny real-time experiences, in order to force a rift between how they perceive the world, and their reaction to it. Elaborately taking all these measures just to fit in, only to be called lazy, disorganized, slow, dull, weak, sensitive, every so often, when they get overwhelmed and the mask inevitably slips, that they ask themself once again…

“What is wrong with me?”

The Rift of Misunderstanding

Of course everyone gets upset when their plans are disrupted; of course people forget things all the time; of course we all get overwhelmed sometimes; of course there are days when we simply cannot muster the strength to get things done.

Many symptoms associated with neurodivergent conditions are not particularly unique to those who live with them. At the same time, they are neither a matter of ordinary degree nor isolated occurrences. Rather, they exist on a continuum of frequency, intensity, and persistence that fundamentally alters one's relationship with everyday life.

It is precisely because these experiences are familiar to everyone that they are so easily misunderstood. The neurotypical individual recalls the occasional forgotten appointment or the fleeting inability to maintain sustained focus and assumes the neurodivergent experience to be merely a more dramatic version of their own. Yet the difference between the two is not unlike the difference between stumbling once during a walk and living with a permanent limp. The action may appear the same, but the reality from which it arises is profoundly different.

Consequently, what is perceived from the outside as laziness, carelessness, oversensitivity, or a lack of discipline is often the visible consequence of an invisible cognitive process. People judge the behaviour because it is all they can observe, while the neurological mechanisms that produced it remain hidden from view.

Phrases like “aren't we all a little autistic”, “just concentrate”, “it isn't that big a deal”, “you're being overly sensitive”, don't just reveal ignorance and misunderstanding, they shrink the conditions to nothing more than what is visible—the symptoms. They undermine the genuine efforts made, they ignore the history of battles fought—the ones won, as much as the lost ones.

They reinforce the idea that the neurodivergent experience is invalid, they indirectly say; your brain working differently isn't enough a reason to behave differently, they erode what is left of one's self-esteem, they cause the individual to always second guess their own emotions, they shrink the entire world to the quiet corner of their room, they remind them that the world isn't quite the oyster they were taught to believe, and to some, they can even be the straw that breaks the threshold between Passive SI and an attempt.

How do we attempt to bridge this gap of misunderstanding? How does one describe the essential nuances of an experience to another who has never lived it — who has encountered it, at most, in glimpses, like the tip of an iceberg? How do you explain yourself to someone who isn't bothered to empathize, or at the very least listen? How do you attempt to correct deeply ingrained stereotypes in a world designed to create them in the first place?

The best one can do is throw the words out there, hoping that whoever is listening truly cares to understand — because even then, words and language can never fully convey the experiences we have lived or the sentiments we bear. They only reflect a portion of it. The gap of misunderstanding can only truly be bridged by shared experience.

The point here isn't that neurotypical people are incapable of understanding, rather, language reaches its limits when describing subjective experience.

A neurotypical person can understand executive dysfunction intellectually while never experiencing the invisible resistance between intention and action. Likewise, a neurodivergent person may struggle to imagine the effortless automaticity with which many neurotypical people initiate, organize, and transition between tasks.

The kind of understanding that brings about progress and change therefore requires humility more than explanation, a level of open-mindedness to differing perspectives, and empathy that accommodates all kinds of neurological differences, because there's always more to a thing than meets the eye.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img"
