Selling my wares in the local farmers market each Saturday offered motivation to keep dreaming up ideas and an audience to test out these creations in the moment. I had a 3 foot space and enjoyed thinking up ways that I could display my art in an interesting way . From domino pendants, to small collage portraits on wood, to cigar box purses and collage transfers with embellishments on wall hangings . As I was new to this small rural city the market introduced me to other local creatives as well as those who appreciated things made by hand .

Although I also offered my art online -this in person experience was invaluable.

I created the Laughing Crone (my first venture into the world of Zines ) before I was actually a Crone myself . (I believe I felt a shift of acceptance regarding my age!) It’s messages were simple ..Yet in line with my beliefs.

It was fun to use an expression that over the years has migrated form a derogatory term for an older woman -to one of wisdom or whatever meaning one would like to embrace !

I recall having a few copies distributed at The Toronto Women's’ Bookstore (closed in 2012) which felt like a perfect match as they also sold zines at the time.

A few weeks ago in the middle of our trying -to sell- our -home mayhem I wrote and assembled The Laughing Crone 2 zine . It fit beautifully with my mindset. in the first crone Zine I meticulously created collage art to dovetail with my words.. In the newer version I have used my older art images as well as photos of my grandmothers to convey my messages..

The messages were mostly similar re a feminist vein-but factored in some thoughts relating to the age (70 ) and time of life I find myself in.

I believe this edition is more reflective of my current musings -22 years later!

Yet I still find The laughing Crone 1 to be relevant -So I printed the old zine from my old original templates ! How times have changed -as my old printer in 2004 would not have the capacity to achieve such clear and attractive results.

It looks like I won’t be shipping art prints or original art to the USA until the 50% tariff mess is cleared up- but I will continue to mail zines. (I’ll wait and see how this unfolds!) It’s always been pricey to ship via Canada Post but adding these extra costs is unfair to my patrons.

A week ago I turned 70 .

It’s a number but also an impression and a significant marker of age..

Aches in my legs and hip, sleeping less hours of interrupted sleep, forgetting words and sometimes names..I am at my best in early mornings!

Yet..I’m still mostly healthy, eager to keep on making art!

I am grateful for my health and life.

I continue to seek new ways to be creative in an ever changing world

To be less preoccupied with sales and numbers

I appreciate friendship, family, kindred spirits and good listeners

What’s changed..and the good parts..

I am a feistier, bolder individual .

I am less willing to accept people :

Who don’t care about the value of human life (everywhere) and the welfare of animals

..and nature

Who are preoccupied with material things , image and themselves

Who do not care about what happens in the world outside their own bubble.

What about you ? What has changed in your world since the numbers and years started to ascend ?

I just returned from an overseas trip and have been confronted with inevitable jet lag. It’s really not so bad this time as I anticipated it and reflected on the beautiful time with family members which shifted the whole experience for me. It was lovely to be celebrated for my birthday and to feel appreciated in their world.

Not having a salaried job with expectations to return to I can adjust with the flow of adaptation and sleep. I can nap!

While away I was car less and walked everywhere . More fresh air and my tired muscles welcomed rest at night. Drinking lots of water hydrated my body and aided adjustment .

In quiet moments I sketched in my tiny travel sketchbook. Some of my sketches were from life ..others from memory with bits of written memories thrown in

Upon return I can continue some of these practises.

So making small changes to confront sleep issues ; walking more and introducing more activity ..eating well .

Only commiting to what I can manage energy wise also has been key.

Tomorrow I will turn my “on vacation” off on my Etsy shop as I feel ready to re-enter my art business as well.

What does it mean to be Age-less and why did I concoct this newsletter as an empathetic response to the mature artist?

Do you ever feel a need to keep up with ever changing technology and evolving approaches to marketing your work?

Do you feel seen?

Relevant?

Do you find yourself comparing yourself to younger artists or highly successful mature artists?

Do you encounter ageism in your practise and personal life ?

I have many experiences while walking around that people look through me -as if I were invisible. I seek out those with a smile and a greeting -It means alot! While on my plane on the way to the UK the man sitting next to me did not even say hello or acknowledge me. (It’s certainly better than being oggled or leered at - yet..)

(I must note there were also many in my travels who said hi or offered a smile! )I have a responsibility also to reach out and be friendly whenever possible.

So in closing

I am not offering sage advice on wellness or a course to learning about this age and stage of life. It is so individual.

What I would like to say is I believe there is no reason you can’t be the same or new and improved artist as long as you are willing to stick with it, learn constantly and challenge yourself with new experiences.

The world must find a way to recognize how amazing you are- and the gift and wisdom of a creative life lived so far!

You don’t have to be “invisible” or in the background .

You have so much yet to offer!

Such is the age and stage we are at . Has growing older changed your relationship with home/property maintenance.? Sometimes it feels like there is so much to do inside and out just to keep it liveable and somewhat presentable. There are meals to make, food to shop for and time for our loved ones (including furry family members)

How does art and time for oneself factor in? The distractions are endless.

Last Sunday I returned home from a creative getaway. I did not sign up for a workshop , or anything organized and I travelled alone . I walked and rode on streetcars through neighbourhoods of my past life and absorbed the sensory experience of the city through rural eyes. I sketched in coffee shops and in one friendly brewpub. Time spent with a friend and my cousin were relaxing and fulfilling also.

I attended the Toronto Comic Arts festival downtown and it was magical. So wonderful to witness such an alternative art form rising above ! The art in the zines and posters and other offerings were clever, imaginative unique and bold . The artists were friendly and accessible. The youthful energy contagious.

It enamoured me further with this often -thought- of -fringe -art form ! It definitely is embraced by thousands of supporters as was evident this weekend.

As artists I believe we require all sorts of new stimuli to keep the creative wheels spinning. The peace and tranquility is lovely always -but a little brush with urban energy and art cannot hurt.

The concept that our art practice can continue to grow and expand over time encourages me greatly. If I feel stuck artistically -usually trying something new and breaking routine to truly helps.

So after my small escape from the country ..What next?

I will be offering an on the spot zine making workshop in Owen Sound on the 27th of June during “Artwalk” where folks can sit down and make a zine using materials I will provide. It should be fun! Art Walk 2026

I will be stationed at the lovely and eclectic Heartwood Home 10-3pm Free!

I am also privileged to be a guest artist at Markdale Library August 6th for a Youth Zine workshop - more info to be posted soon !

Back at it!

I have been tossing around the idea of revisiting Etsy again (Yes it’s an artist’s prerogative to change her mind! Haha) as a means to highlight and sell my art prints and work on paper. I am just starting to add listings -so stay tuned if you would like access to a wider selection of my art. I was quite grateful and surprised that Etsy made reopening my shop seamless with all reviews and user info intact! If you would like to take a look…My etsy shop (I am adding listings daily)

My current webshop may become the spot where I launch new work (including my Zines! ;-) and I would like to continue using it as my home base. I have been happy with Big Cartel as a host thus far.

I continue to use social media sparingly -and plan to make announcements there when new work or events surface!

I am also working steadily at limiting my time on the phone -although currently the computer is dominating my online time with set up of Etsy , newsletters etc.

It reminds me of time spent over the years with promotion and set up of shops etc.

Let’s all do something .As we are artists (or those who appreciate art ) Let’s make art

Forgive me for being on my podium for just a bit.

Let’s do rather than sit. Let’s be the action ..Not the receptacle .

Let’s not say..I do not have time or energy for (art, music, writing, conversation , activism…. critical thought.

Let’s not teach and model for our children that the little device in our hands is more captivating then they are to us. They absolutely know when we are unavailable. There is a lot of societal pressure for children to have phones early ..But..There seems to be a positive movement growing for us to consider the consequences on young minds from smartphone use. (I will also include video games and isolated activities related to screen time and children/youth.)

Our un -asked for media/screen culture is sucking the life out of our veins and it is becoming our normal! It is very very clever and can be a huge distraction from real life. As I have spoken about before =having a handy little device in our hands draws us into another world. Do you recall when people actually talked on cell phones ? I remember being on a streetcar , feeling annoyed because an individual was talking loudly in public on their cell phone ! I refer to this topic often because I have walked my own walk with the addictive qualities of these devices. Before I removed almost all the apps on my phone, altered the screen to B&W and deleted social media from my screen I noted I was spending 4 + hours daily on my phone! Yikes! I felt I was being responsible regarding my news consumption and outrage re wars and the world. I thought following favourite artists was a good idea . I was being swallowed. It hampered my creative side and stunted free flowing thoughts.

TV was thought of as an early negative influence into our lives when I was younger and I recall our tv time was limited by our parents. (as was reading books earlier than my time -but I digress!)

Since I have watched the occasional series or movie on a platform I agree it truly varies in offering a satisfying viewing experience.. . Once and a while a gem surfaces that makes me believe in the wonder of cinema, great acting and screenwriting -luscious cinematography. A film that makes me wonder , question and be awed by the feelings it stirs in me.

Maybe I don’t like to just zone out-but rather zone in . Discrimination can be a beautiful thing when it comes to making choices about how we spend our precious time..

Time is of the essence and there are trees and birds and wild wonderful things outside.

My legs need to feel action, movement and my heart needs to pump .

I also love to read-and need dedicated time to absorb a book . I intentionally seek out time for this special activity. It requires a different kind of participation from me. It is ultimately rewarding.

Are you truly connecting with others on your phone or device ..Or scrolling those carefully curated items meant to draw you in further to the chasm?

Ok I admit Substack is another form of social media. One can easily scroll “notes”

Yet I appreciate most writing here is in long form -and a huge array of writers and artists also create smaller interactive communities with in this platform. Fostering community, challenging norms , sharing history and discoveries , offering opinions which likely differ from mainstream media.

Of course it is another screen application that requires us to monitor our relationship with . Limiting time spent on Substack like anything else is key I believe.

I prefer to meet in person-but if this is not possible then let’s use the internet so it works for us not some mega wealthy morally depleted dude.

I returned to instagram and facebook over the last two weeks to promote a couple of my art shows. Could I just post and walk away? Nope. I checked back of course to gauge the response to my posts and this took me down different paths.(or rabbit holes)

This did not inform me in any way who would be attending my shows or buying my art. It was nice to see friends, family show their appreciation and support. There is value in feeling noticed-but …

To the artists who say it grows their business I feel I have seen the light - it certainly grows “hearts and likes.” I now grow my own business by showing up to the making and marketing of my own art-but there are many ways I can accomplish this-without daily ball and chain posting on Insta or facebook .

I used to use both Facebook and Instagram religiously to post my art and progress -no more. It truly has devolved into a place that is not a healthy match for me or my art. I would have no idea who my real audience would be anymore . Maintaining an email list and posting here feel more authentic in these times .

As for my events I cannot tell you enough how satisfying it was to meet people in person and to converse with them about art and life. Being surrounded by other creative vendors in both venues was a plus also. I also sold my art -which is satisfying that people are interested (and value!) what an artist makes in their own private world..

Biblioarts before the crowds, artist and I at Mini- Con ..my tables!

I am transfixed by the dedicated mama robin outside my window and under the eaves of our home. I watched her feed one of her little ones after her partner delivered a ration of food for all. The little nest spills over -yet remains intact after wind gusts, and heavy rain.. A heatwave and frost last night . It can’t be comfortable or easy but she is committed .

It made me think that likewise the brave people of Gaza and now Lebanon maintain their dedication to their rightful homes and community.. Even in the rubble , destroyed and crumbled and dangerous which none of us comfortable westerners could tolerate.

I raised a little cash as a fundraiser for Gaza (my little zine for a donation) at both events and sent to Oxfam to support those in need there yesterday. Thank you so kindly to all that donated -You warmed my heart!

I have been working on a comic zine which presents a different view of the genocide in Gaza ..A “what if this was your world” perspective. More to come!

Meanwhile I am getting a few of my other zines ready for my online shop. I am working out price points and shipping. There will be a free mini zine digital download also ! Stay tuned!

I have also added a few matted original mixed media works on paper (many incorporating the wonderful gelli plate ) as well as a few new art prints !

I confess to have neglected this shop of mine -but in the spirit of “doing”…

I feel a bit celebratory actually, as for many years now I have resisted allowing my natural colour to preside. Reaching a comfort level with short hair and to let it be natural has taken some time . I had felt a spark of excitement to have my hair bright and almost platinum each time it was coloured (by my most talented in home stylist). It felt like resistance. I fussed that having grey hair with a lot of nondescript brown would drag me down . I knew of course it would not be the lustrous white grey or full on silver that some seniors are blessed with. I thought it would look coarse and bring out my sharp edges.

My artist appearance seemed vainly wrapped up in my hair being a certain way - a bit funky a bit nontraditional-yet of course that initial brightness never lasted very long. I feared a head of helmet hair! Feeling how soft it is now and not going through the discomfort of bleaching and colouring it has been true liberation. I have even toned down the gel. How can it age me any more when I am already that age ?Ha Ha .. It’s ironic really and hypocritical of me to profess I am comfortable with myself aging yet resist the natural greying process .

I had been comfortable with my brunette status for most of my life. Having it coloured over the last almost 30 years has been fun and ..a ride and often a lift. From bright electric red to auburn to platinum . Beginning with a wild red streak to start it all off ..

Does our hair colour matter..make a statement do you think ?

(Perhaps now it just doesn’t concern me in the same way ..the freeing part.)

This weekend is my first event in so very long . The Owen Sound Mini Comic Con!

I am introducing a different kind of art and feel it will be important to receive feedback for this new venture. Going live is a perfect way to gauge response from the community -either through comments and queries..or sales.

I do recall back in 2004 I created 3 or 4 zines and sold them at our local farmer’s market -It was thrilling to observe people’s response upon reading these little personal booklets printed at our local small print shop in B&W with colored covers (sometimes ). I find it a little funny now to think the “Laughing Crone” was my first entry artistically into examining womens’ issues post menopause at age 49! (I think it’s time to make The Laughing Crone Part 2 !)

I may even revive this Zine now! It remains relevant!

Farewell So long Goodbye -was my perspective on the historic buildings in my new home town being demolished..

I have had many people ask me about zines..What are they exactly? Here is Wikipedia’s long answer ..What is a Zine?

If you know anything about Zines then you know they have an alternative feel in the art world from artists to collectors..The subject an artist chooses can be political , fan based, personal or whatever they wish to say visually Another feature that I believe is remarkable and endearing in these times is that a zine is not so much about profit -but allows for the artist’s own expression! They have been around for awhile but I believe there is a resurgence in this special medium. Some artists make digital downloads to sell, trade or offer for free online ..

Making a zine allows the artist to freely express personal thoughts ..Share information and art in a way that’s accessible to all. The artist is their own personal curator .

a few mini zines which will be available in my next two events ! (The Gaza zine is by donation with proceeds to Oxfam-one of the few organizations permitted in Gaza ) I created my Animal dreams zine during ‘s wonderful comic book art course .

Zines are also an affordable way to collect an artist’s work -and can honestly be quite addictive! No one is going to say they haven’t any room in their home or on their walls for a zine :-) Ha!

If you are an artist you are human -and constantly exposed to all kinds of life events -from loss, to health , to family matters and to the world..I wondered how much this affects our ability or interest in making. Overwhelm can be a beast. We celebrate too - Our achievements , the rewards , the positives that bounce off of others onto us and back again.

Life is never a straight line forward or upwards ..It zigs and zags. Technology and ever changing consumerism can swallow us.

At this stage of life my energy is not quite the same , my body less resilient and my sleep affected in a major way that I can’t always blame on my nocturnal oriented senior pets.

My mind continues to be busy so I do try to capitalize on those moments when an idea pops in that energizes me with my art making.

I wish my heart and mind to be open and that the thoughts and ideas which surface match with my contribution to the world .

I want to be soft and welcoming . I want to feel deeply which also involves hurting deeply at times. I want to be humble yet strive to be my best self.

I have just jumped back into the saddle again after many fallow months. I required that time to foster and entertain new ideas and break away from my typical approach to art. To relax -to move slowly. Life transitions take time -and emerging into this place of seniordom has been a process.

How are you doing?

I am on pins and needles regarding the world and the uglier state of war . Talking to others does help somewhat. Attending my weekly local protest/ rally helps. Writing here helps.

I have not been posting on instagram or Facebook. I have not posted very much here in relation to politics of the world of late. It’s given me pause.

My hundreds of posts promoting sanity and world peace and the dark, evil reality of occupation and war did not receive the same the response that my art has over time. I felt the withdrawal of interest, the turning away from unpleasantries. I wasn’t surprised.

I try to search for meaningful essays by thoughtful writers to offer me some kind of understanding and logic. Mainstream news only disappoints . AI and hypocrisy abound. Who do you trust?

I am an artist but also a human. So if posting about my perspective on peace loses followers so be it. I’m hoping if you are reading me now it just might be because you may be sharing the same sorrow and distress with what’s going on. .

It seems wrong to me somehow to make war and destruction and killing the elephant in the room -topics which are not discussed.

Yes everyone agrees that Trump is a monster. An easy topic in these times to broach.

But ..let’s talk governments and corrupt leadership ; killing civilians , weapons manufacturing in the billions, ceasefire violations, colonialism, war mongering, sheer evil . Let’s talk about USA and Israel and what is fundamentally , morally wrong about their role in killing people and devastation. If you are a Westerner do you feel sadness and grief when you hear about your sisters and brothers and children from afar being murdered by the hundreds and thousands -for no reason?

Do numbers of people killed even have meaning any more?

According to the Ministry of health in Gaza at least 75,000 people have been killed by Israel and nearly 18,000 wounded . ( Many more likely buried under rubble)

In Iran more than 1,200 people have been killed and about 10,000 others injured in the US-Israeli war, according to Iranian authorities.

The media shows us smoke above buildings in these countries -but who dares to show the people and lives blown into little pieces underneath?

When I was much younger I recall my mom counselling me that discussion about politics and religion was a taboo in social interactions..How many people pay tribute to that thought ?

I have since abandoned that notion.

Politics is everything and everywhere.

As a Canadian I think we are considered fairly innocuous-people pleasing ..unlikely to stir up conflict. I dearly hope we can develop a spine in international affairs -Spain and Belgium have so far set an example for every country . I hope that the rising gas prices are not our only reflection on the war on Iran . I hope we can talk openly with each other. Who will you offend if you speak the truth ? Who really supports Genocide and the mass murder of innocents -the destruction of their worlds ?

We are as people who we are as artists . Art is my joy but also my business. My business is also what is happening in the world .

To me I cannot compartmentalize myself so cleanly. My sentiments flow through my creations.

I believe your focus of care is yourself, your family and loved ones , friends -but I am positive there is room to include others in your thoughts (and actions) too. People you will never meet or know.

Speak up about your sentiments -even if it’s within your social circle. You will learn a lot about people you know..Sign a petition or several . Stand on the street with a sign. Protest . Wear a button. Remember when you vote you are voting for people who may potentially make a difference. Do they clearly reflect your values? Do they condemn or support wars on other nations?

Educate yourself about other countries and cultures. Read and read more. Source alternative and varied news platforms. Mainstream news “bites” will never give you the full unbiased picture. Speak with people in your community who are from a different culture than yourself. Learn a new language. Talk to your children openly.

Make the world smaller.

It seems that I am not as able to manage time changes and the hustle of travel-airport , train diversions , missing sleep as in the past -and am finally making peace with that. I am so very fortunate to visit with my faraway family and continue to seek ways to make it feel less frenetic !

I arrived back in Canada to -20 C conditions and passed through a brief snowstorm on my 3 hour drive home from the airport at night.

Back in this winter chill, nestled in my home with heat and creature comforts I can only be grateful as my body fights this tenacious viral invader.

As the world continues to spin off of its axis I count myself lucky. The sickness I have is a small thing. I will feel better .

Today is the first day that I feel a kind of opening ..and my body /head returning somewhat to itself. There is a definite spring in my step.

Anyone else struggling with winter viruses?

On the creative side..

I continue to feel a new kind of passion for comics .

As a child I could read comic books over and over, and was also a fan of the huge Saturday comic insert in my parents newspaper . I adored reading classical literature through the Classics Illustrated comic series. I was a great fan of MAD magazine and the humour and art inspirational and entertaining to a ten your old .

I made comics as a response to adolescent angst with my best friend at 13 years of age. We found clever ways to lampoon the world around us and as a coping strategy it was brilliant. We transfered these skills to our own personal cards and booklets and later on to the school newsletter. Humour and making light of our awkward place in the world offered opportunity to laugh at ourselves .

I earned a place in my Art college Spring student exhibition by rendering an incident in a local bar I witnessed titled “Cowboys” about how a small feisty woman broke up a bar brawl. I recall being hesitant to show it to my instructor as it was not in a typical superhero format -yet surprised that he found it funny and unique :-)

For a huge chunk of my adult life I abandoned comics for painting and mixed media work. I loved both mediums but have also missed the spontaneity of creating from my head.

Now comics have returned to me. In hard times , and sometimes the unreality of our times they have provided a window into another perspective (another me!)

Comics can be funny, insightful, thought provoking and or political and also take the shape of an autobiography or a memoir . I am also enthralled by graphic novels and the artful no holds barred zine.

(As I begin to feel better I hope to visit our local library in person as they have a most extensive and excellent graphic novel collection !)A couple of years ago I started documenting my experiences as single panel comics. from the mundane to the ridiculous I realized the opportunities were endless in my life. I started paying attention to my experiences with greater focus. Now I have several sketchbooks full of these documented moments .

Something that is curiously obvious to me at this age and stage now is my desire to have made a mark , and to reflect on my life in a way that might be interesting to others (and hopefully to those who are more closely connected to me -over time)

The interesting part to me is that our lives do not have to be remarkable in a grandiose way. Every life has its meaning and unique footprint on earth. The small moments count.

I am less concerned with perfect drawings now in my comics and more about developing story and characters with life.

I have been joyfully taking an online comics course by the talented artist/illustrator

which has helped to nudge me out of my typical comfort zone and revved up my excitement for this practise. I would heartily recommend to any one who wishes to partake in a fun yet growth enhancing creative course ! We are also making zines!

I also have been following comic artist who offers plenty of interesting exercises on his website and newsletter to inspire.

Other forms of capturing moments is of course via sketchbook diaries which might be snippets of art with hand written text . If you are a writer you might be capturing your life in written form.

Update on my dumb-phoning project

Even during recent travel I kept my apps on homepage to a minimum . With my phone now being altered to black and white it doesn’t serve well as an entertainment device . I continue to have my email available , and for the trip I added Trainline as an App to ease my navigational challenges . I still have my camera and regular telephone (text and call ) Looking around me everywhere.. almost everyone was on their phones!

It reminded me of myself in the past, travelling head down and scrolling ! So much is missed ! People are so very interesting to watch ! Also I notice that ideas develop when I have time to just sit and daydream or take note of my surroundings I sketch or read a book when I can -and take in the moments!

Now my morning rituals look very different . I continue to have my coffee in peace wedged between dog and cat on the couch. I read my emails on my phone , look at the weather forecast and then write in my journal or just sit and let my mind wander.

I would not label it a New Years Resolution but the word epiphany works .

How can I appreciate my time and participate fully in life daily ?

It feels extra meaningful to me these days. I am on the cusp of 70 years old -which by the way feels so much different than even 65 . Why do I often take time for granted in this precious life? Always looking ahead in anticipation of the next interesting event.

The future is officially clipped and I must consider it now in a condensed form .I have been in denial of this evidence for some time now.

Why not offer myself art time before “things that should get done” prioritize enjoyable nurturing activity over “shoulds”

I am fairly adept at focusing on art before dishes, dusting or floor cleaning for example. Or art before exercise.

How can I make my precious time work for me.

There is also reading, writing and movement . Blessed sleep to factor in.

Eating food I enjoy and that is also healthy for me. Drinking more water.

Time well spent with kindred spirits. Giving back .

And there is Art -which offers great fulfillment and joy. While making art as my professional side hustle I recognised the satisfaction it gave me as a comforting contrast to my giving profession. Hustle was the operative word however -and making art for sale involved much more than the creation itself.

Now there doesn’t have to be an either or - Both approaches to creativity are possible.

Without hustle.

So what is preventing me from realizing my priorities ? From making art after all my responsibilities are taken care of ?(this can be endless!)

What I have started to do so far ..

I have researched dumb (simple ) phones and although attractive in many ways I found the cost prohibitive (perhaps this will change with heightened public awareness and time). Many don’t have the connectivity I require with long distance calls .

For now I have decided to take off apps which promoted scrolling and distraction-I will monitor to see if it makes a difference in my time for other pursuits, focus -and mood! (so far after 3 days it feels so much lighter!)

So I am saying goodbye to my main App distractions on my phone - News, Pinterest, Youtube , Instagram and Facebook (which I hadn’t been posting on much for art -but definitely crept sneakily into following others and activism ). I have left email on for now as it fits into my communication category

In my hand it is oh so convenient- and if the temptation is removed then I am starting from a healthier place

Also the phone does not belong in my bedroom and can be safely stored in another room unless I make a call -or am receiving one. My excuse has been I need to check the time (I don’t )

Do I need to replace my morning routine? (I’m an early riser and first one up!)

Yes indeed .

I am checking my email and perhaps the weather ( I am Canadian lol) on the phone .

I have a journal I write in sporadically -now daily.

I always have a book on the go..

I like to make art in the daylight and currently its too dark for me first thing in the morning -but I can write down or simply think about process and ideas .

I can stretch my body into the day and have an early breakfast.

My computer still exists for catching up on other things but it is static and I notice I utilize it much differently. I don’t need to carry around with me the information the smart phone spits out at me 24/7. the computer is my tool for connectivity,knowledge , and art related business

-but my hope is my phone will once again be my phone.

Christmas in our home was fraught with edgy expectations and adult turmoil. Arguments were quick to arise -Yet my brother and I kept our eye on the prize - the magical appearance of toys under the well lit and ornamented tree on Christmas morning. The stocking full of mysterious offering such as giant apples, toothbrushes, chocolates (and maybe socks? ) The adult attention to detail -ornaments hung in strategic places , cards strung across doorways and the blue wreath on our front door made with care by my mom from blue plastic dry cleaner bags . One evening was dedicated to tree decoration duly recorded by my dad on his brownie camera . Two blue flood lights lit up our home outside and it was customary tradition to drive around the neighbourhood at night and witness the various displays of festive lights (blow up decorations had not been invented yet)..transforming the suburban landscape. When I was old enough I purchased gifts for my parents with my allowance at Kresges .( I recall picking out carefully a bag of colourful sponges, a plunger and a small decorative brooch for my mom.)

The dinner was magnificent -Made extra special by the company of cousins and aunts and uncles . Much rambunctious play accelerated by treats took place and the adults kept to their own (boring) conversations in the kitchen or living room . The chatter was likely fueled by cocktails.(pre drink don’t drive days)

I will treasure those memories of my childhood Christmas . The magic of the season -the traditions, the myths , the festive happenings.

While all this sounds glorious until I was an adult myself I would never have considered all of the added stress this occasion presented for them .

As a working single mom in my daughters earliest years Christmas expectations brought joy mingled with time and economic pressures. The memories nonetheless are sweet as I strived to recreate that magical element of the season for her.

This year I made prints of animal related art with my tetra paks and the pasta maker and sent these handmade cards out to family and friends.

I am peaceful and content with my current adult experience of Christmas . It feels simple and satisfying and totally ours.

Our more recent tradition is simple.

Enjoy quiet moments with our animals and each other.

Eat a few more interesting meals .

We do not exchange material gifts.

We Donate to our local animal shelter.

We might watch Its a Wonderful life or the original A Christmas Carol .

We will likely be serenaded by one too many Christmas songs on the radio.

For now a Facetime Christmas day online meetup with my daughter and family will be grand and much appreciated.

It’s not at all boring. Time changes traditions. It is truly just perfect .

Downplaying and avoiding the hype just makes it a pleasant quiet time.- without expectation.

Everyone must find their own way through this season . Different decades in our lives offer opportunities for new experiences -not any less or more than before. We have the opportunity (and sometime the choices) to define our own rituals and traditions .

As I write I am recovering from some sort of virus .. Which has compelled me to lay low , stay home and partake in forced relaxation. I have 100% non exposure to stores or advertising for the season -and Christmas. This has included listening to music without distraction, reading, watching a few interesting movies , cleaning minimally.

I have added a few pages to my Autumn sketchbook (who says you can’t go back in time??) and started a comic experimentation sketchbook ..I have had the pleasure of dog noses on my lap as well as a cat scrunched in beside me on the couch . The fire in our fireplace glows and helps make our small cabin cozy as do the twinkly lights on the mantel. The wind howls fiercely outside.

We were a small group (and even though I struggled with my own set up ha! )it was wonderful to chat and learn from each other while making whatever we chose to work on!

Last week a little girl on my country road inspired me.

On a particularly grey day recently we discovered a small package in our mailbox . It contained a cardboard haunted house with treats for us and the dogs inside (homemade biscuits! ) and a little Happy Halloween note drafted by hand in crayon with a joyful pumpkin sketch. It brought instant smiles to our faces.

How rare is this occasion -where a young child delivers her handmade wishes to her barely familiar neighbours? She asked for nothing in return and as her mom explained later (when I extended my thanks and a little drawing pad /markers in her mailbox) she truly enjoys making these surprise packages for others!

She had also left us a Thanksgiving treat kit for the dogs and a beautiful turkey drawing a month ago. On that occasion I was fortunate to thank her while she was playing with her grandma outside .

Her smile was a huge sunbeam.

Last December it was homemade dog and human cookies in a tin. Always with a personal note and a drawing

On this particular day it lit up my spirits-and offered faith in the future of our children and humanity .

It’s so easy to go down the slippery slide of cynicism and negativity -a hopelessness about the world.

Our small neighbours gift giving without expectation was refreshing and timely.

Yesterday I made white poppies as we are on the cusp of remembrance day with the typical red poppies everywhere. I warm to the message the white poppies symbolize -representing an anti war stance and sympathy for those impacted by war. Around for 90 years as an symbol of peace -challenging militarism and to encourage people to question why war continues to be normalized . It was heartening to give out a few among our Palestine protest members at our weekly rally.

Prior to the rally I picked up a few items at the local grocery store. A very friendly check out person complimented me on my coat. This led into a brief yet sweet discussion about the ethics, joy and value of shopping second hand . I left the grocery store feeling a little more positive from this very human encounter with a stranger.

On another day and time I may have not taken stock or appreciated the beauty of the moment .

Later that day the staff at our local art gallery not only welcomed our sketching group to the space -but quietly set up stools for us to use while drawing ..

Kind gestures, warm smiles..Acknowledgement of each other. Simple efforts to make another’s day a bit brighter.

Paying attention to the goodness in others fosters hope for our world -especially when all can feel quite bleak.

Creating opportunities to reach out and make a connection-to open a door , offer a greeting or a kind comment can move mountains.

I will be looking more carefully into situations where there is human connection and work harder to practise and foster this myself because there are always moments that offer small gifts if we pay attention.

My thoughts wandered to the notion of touch as integral to all beings . I also wondered about how much more meaningful it is as we age into ourselves .

While spending a short time in Italy I experienced the brief hug and two kisses on the face from two new dinner acquaintances -something that rarely occurs here. As awkward as I was in receiving this physical gesture it truly felt nice.

When I was helping to care for my twin granddaughters in the UK the sweetest moments were while being held they smushed their faces up close so we were eye to eye. Even the little bit of drool was no problem .

I also didn’t mind at all when the Italian security person patted me down at the airport .

I just realized how fleeting it is in my culture and my western homeland to make physical contact with a fellow human . The proximity and comfort zone with another is apparently determined depending on our levels of intimacy as outlined in this link :proxemics.

I do not come by this show of affection easily -as I was raised by two non huggers . I recall my dad’s awkward stiff body when I tried to hug him more often in later years and my mom finally and weirdly succumbing to hugs when closer to end of life . My grandmother however, was very affectionate with hugs and kisses through the years -and even though she had many grandchildren she made each one of us feel special.

While purchasing an old window for my animal shed I was warmed by a brief encounter with a lovely Mennonite woman and her three children . The children were playing in a stroller that they were using as a kind of bus ..When the youngest wandered over to me arms high in the air her mother shared that “she just wants to be held”

I inquired if it was ok -and with mom’s affirmative blessing I picked up the two ish year old in my arms.. It was so delightful and unexpected . She made eye contact with me the whole time I was talking to her mom. Such a small yet beautiful human moment !

A few of our fellow protesters who meet each Saturday hug in greeting and parting with one and other. It feels comforting and a recognition of our solidarity and collective time spent together holding signs on the side of the road.

These kind of gestures can be extra meaningful especially if its been awhile since we had contact with another being. This post is really not about art -but more the ageless part of being . What do we need as artists and humans to stay healthy emotionally and physically -especially as we age into a time where our exposure to others may be less frequent.

My earphones fed me soft classical tunes and I could feel these long luxurious breaths in my ribcage as I sunk into the chair.

There is another side to me ..beyond the frustration, sadness and anger at the state of human destruction and loss. I require this other side to balance the inequities of my comfortable natural environment with the recognition of tragedy beyond. I am trying to pay attention, with gratitude, to this beautiful life . September is a time of reflection and renewal isn’t it? . It’s hard to think about much else other than the atrocities in Gaza and the ineptitude of our western leaders . Yet I am drawn to art for the healing , the mark making , the visual commentary and the release.

Home again.

I have just returned from three weeks in the UK. spending time with infant twin grandchildren and my daughter and son in law. I am grateful to have the privilege of spending time with family who live afar - . I even had the unique experience of spending a few nights in Italy.

I am reflecting.

I am feeling my age ,- worn

by time zones and airports. There is a fight or flight aspect to travelling solo. One cannot truly relax knowing that in these moments we are 100 percent responsible for our own well being. Mentally processing the experience. I recognised how stimulating mentally and physically it is to be away from my familiar. A world away that is and is not mine. I have been thinking about how privileged I am to live here - with health , creature comforts, family , friends .

While away in alone times I was fortunate to to participate in a roadside protest , meet an online artist friend in person, sketch , take notes, write , attend an art gallery opening night and tune my senses into this other world. I walked so much which was good for my body. I challenged myself with bus routes and navigation.

Stirring art in a Letchworth UK gallery -The Broadway gallery Trigger Warning by Idit Elia Nathan is a sculptural installation of handkerchiefs passed down through the maternal line, delicately embroidered with press images from the war in Gaza and artistic responses to historic horrors of war.

I was honoured to join the North Hertfordshire PSC for a roadside protest and to meet the lovely embers for coffee afterwards

I do all of these things because I can and because I am privileged to do so. My choices are vast- inconveniences few. ( and minor)

At the risk of sounding bereft, distracted and bleak I reflect on our world and Gaza right now through my personal lens. Some of you may nod in agreement -perhaps you feel somewhat the same as me. Although I recognise that we require encouragement to look towards hope and positivity- perhaps my post would be more welcome if I focused on hope and beauty and strictly my art practice. For me it all connects.. Age is a double edged sword . The wisdom to know better- to expect a kinder world -the devastating realization that more than often good hearts do not rule. I say I cannot look away in so many different ways -and never expected that my personal art newsletter would reflect on a genocide and the utter disgusting horror that we are presented with regarding the decisions of our so called leaders and the despicable actions of Israel..( and in lockstep -Western leaders)

We put on trial and place people that murder others for life in prison as punishment . We are outraged . They are not permitted time in society for their crimes . They are effectively outcasts .

It is a heresy that those who have the power to stop this intentional destruction of a nation of people turn away and do nothing. For those who commit these crimes against humanity to live on without consequence. It is evil and heartbreaking.

My only hope is that as the thousands and thousands of everyday people /protesters grow and swell in numbers and push back so that some kind of justice for the Palestinian people can be won by sheer righteousness . As a Canadian I totally don’t give a care about tariffs right now (or that ignorant piece of crap south of the border who calls himself president .) I am angered and disappointed in my own government’s complicity in the genocide and military support for Israel. It’s cruel and inhumane . The lies are exposed . The curtain has been pulled back.

So I continue to make art ..and on days I need to find an outlet ..It is a hope and a need. The hope is that someone who sees my art reflects on this human travesty and the evil of the perpetrators -the need is for my own well being because this horror is too great to ignore and process . Will it make a difference? I don’t know but I am bound to create and speak out anyway.

I have been scouting the garden centre of late as it gradually reduces the prices on all the neglected and dying plants . I scooped a few the week before which were pathetic and 75 % off. The other day the “free’ sign went up and I loaded up the car with a many as I could manage . They were unwatered, and depleted -but I believed there was hope. I emptied some of my water bottle on those I could help in the moment -the car was scorching hot. I blasted the A/C on the way home to offer them a reprieve.

I had purchased some at the beginning of the season which were of course, thriving. It wasn’t about the money. It troubled me to witness these plants being thrown out in the garbage.

They are now in the soil ; watered and growing determinedly .

It was a small act of something I can do in this world within my reach and grasp.

I enjoy watching these plants come back to their green state and thrive once more -even for a short season.

I have been drawing plants, weeds, wildflower this summer. Loose and fast sketches -not meant to please anyone other than me . If I cannot think about what to draw or make then it’s best for me to pay attention to what matters to me in the moment !

Stay tuned as I will be hosting a live online draw in August where we can capture these lovely works on nature in timed drawings together!

I cannot do as much as I would like to do for the people of Gaza and Palestine right now so I try to do what is within my means . I attend a Protest every Saturday morning in our town, sign petitions , speak up. Draw what I experience and see.

I also attended a beautifully organized Palestine festival in Kitchener, Ontario and managed a couple of sketches in the intense heat!

Finally ..thank you so very very kindly for your generous and bountiful donations to my Art fundraiser for Palestine !

$533 dollars was raised for the charity “Doctors without Borders”(of which 433 was matched on that special weekend by the charity!) If you participated then you can feel very good about this outcome and your part in it!

After the fundraiser I needed to update my art in my web shop ! I am enjoying working on new approaches in my mixed media work (and having a fine time with the gel plates!) All works continue to be reasonable priced and accessible. Expect moody art ;-)

This sale includes a mix of current works of my original art and collaged handmade printed elements . They are all created with a white border and will look lovely framed!. As these works are my first dive into this style of mixed media I am offering you this art at a special price for this fundraiser! There are 20 unique works in this sale.

Art fundraiser

I am doing my best to pay attention to my art while also paying attention to worldly upheaval and incredibly inhumane acts of violence. Of course this has happened for awhile now -and I feel comfortable saying I’m uncomfortable. .and angry and sad .. and so very furious.

I feel I try all the right things to take care of myself while so many do not have that choice . Of course that nags at me too . A privilege to be concerned, distraught about others I do not know- yet able to feed myself well, have proper shelter, people I care about and make art or take a walk in nature if I need to . I can try to push some of the ugliness aside. I try to monitor my exposure to the news yet..

It is embedded in my body .

The distress is real.

The complete utter horror of the savage actions of leaders and the complete silence where there should be outrage. I am fortunate to have a few kindred spirits who do not fear talking out loud about what is happening to the Gazan people and Palestinians . Who do not hesitate to speak up against Israel and the USA and other complicit nations..

I do understand the fear. We have been taught and conditioned to think a certain way about nations. We have been lazy about listening to whatever the media feeds us as truth.

Yet I do not understand the uncaring, unfeeling, the removed -the silence and apathy!

I know I have lost many “followers “ of my art for my beliefs and my perspective -and I also know that many are silently in sync yet worried or conflicted about speaking up .

Well the curtain has been pulled back to reveal evil in its highest form .

I participated in a tetra pak print challenge for a week and all I could focus on was images that related to the Genocide in Gaza

Babies, children, women and men murdered in their tents and as they line up at the only resource for food?? Journalists , doctors, aid workers executed? Hospitals targeted and destroyed? What?? All of this for 17 months and it’s not ending. It’s also not complicated .

And Now Iran .

I have tried to participate in ways that an artist might -I have held a few art fundraisers for Palestine charities , sign petitions whenever they are offered, dedicated a few posts to my thoughts here, and attend local rallies in person regularly. Educate myself. I’ve returned to Instagram (not for art!) but to speak up or circulate posts to add my voice ..

(Compared to my art I receive very few likes!)

I feel cheered by the thousands and thousands of people worldwide that walk and protest and risk their lives for this cause. My frustration comes from the day to day chatter that feels empty -from all of the heads in the sand.

This may not be my best or most appealing art but it has helped to express something through the means offered to me.

So I hope if you have followed me for my art that you will also follow me with love in your heart and hope and action and speaking out loud about the unspeakable to anyone and everyone you can. The impact of man’s inhumanity to man affects us all.. !
