Seguimos creando y distribuyendo medios accesibles que abordan las condiciones de la clase trabajadora y nos educamos sobre el riesgo inminente que implica desafiar las narrativas dominantes.

The recent Prairieland convictions and Minnesota indictments have us reflecting on both the sacrifices and necessity for zine-making and other forms of agitation and popular education in these times. We continue to create and distribute accessible media that speaks to the conditions of the working class and we are educating ourselves about the growing/changing risk of disrupting dominant narratives.

The first art and media packets for our La Marejada | The Upswell subscribers are coming soon and will include a new and updated issue of the zine, Soberanía en la Cocina. This zine, created in 2018, was developed in Puerto Rico while exchanging with organizers and artists of the Centros de Apoyo Mutuo (CAMs) which emerged throughout the archipelago after Hurricane María. The zine shares tips, tricks and step-by-step guides for planning and cooking with your community in disaster situations. Issue 2, currently in production, expands on the content from the first issue and features new artwork, recipes, small scale composting and home gardening tips, and more. Nuestro artista en residencia, Agustín “Tini” Muñoz Ríos, nos comparte su proceso de creación para esta pieza de teatro de títeres que relata una historia personal familiar en el mundo del cañaveral para eso del siglo XX. Luego de trabajar varios prototipos, nos muestra dos perfiles de los fondos que ambientarán dos escenas, indicando la diferencia drástica del panorama ambiental entre la costa y la montaña que nuestres jíbares navegaron para trabajar. Esta pieza tiene la intención de estar lista para presentarse a principios del próximo año y sabemos desde ya que la musicalidad destacará en esta otra faceta del gran artista que es nuestro compañero, Tini. El ángel que ven al final y que es parte del mundo mágico oral de su abuelita continuará manifestándose en los próximos meses para que así como es, sea.

Our artist-in-residence, Agustín “Tini” Muñoz Ríos, shares his creative process for this puppet theater piece, a personal family story set in the world of the sugarcane fields around the turn of the 20th century. After working on several prototypes, he shows us two sketches of the backdrops that will set the scene for two different settings, highlighting the stark contrast in the landscape between the coast and the mountains that our jíbares traversed to get to work. This piece is intended to be ready for performance early next year, and we already know that musicality will take center stage in this other facet of the great artist that is our colleague, Tini. The angel you see at the end—which is part of his grandmother’s magical oral tradition—will continue to manifest in the coming months so that it may be exactly as it is.

En mayo celebramos el vigésimo aniversario de Papel Machete estrenando, El Gran Desencajonamiento, una obra corta sobre trabajadores que desarrollan conciencia de clase y toman los medios de producción neutralizando al jefe, un ‘influencer’ contratado para vender a Puerto Rico a los colonizadores. La producción juntó artistas veteranos de Papel Machete y jóvenes de nuestro proyecto JUVENTUDES en un proceso colaborativo de creación.

Como parte del aniversario, invitamos a integrantes que participaron del proyecto —en Puerto Rico y en la diáspora— a compartir algunas reflexiones y anécdotas de su experiencia con Papel Machete y cómo marcó sus vidas. Los siguientes videos son testimonio de un grupo de jóvenes de clase trabajadora que, con poca experiencia formal en teatro, construyó un cuerpo de trabajo que abarca más de dos décadas y, lo que es más importante, la razón por la cual decidieron hacerlo.

In May, we celebrated Papel Machete’s 20th anniversary with the premiere of El Gran Desencajonamiento, a short play about workers who develop class consciousness and seize the means of production after neutralizing their boss—an influencer hired to sell Puerto Rico to colonizers. The production brought together veteran Papel Machete artists and young artists from our JUVENTUDES project in a collaborative storytelling process.

As part of the anniversary, we also invited former members—both in Puerto Rico and throughout the diaspora—to share reflections and anecdotes about how their experience with Papel Machete shaped their lives. The videos that follow testify to how a group of working class young people, with little formal theater experience, built a body of work spanning more than two decades—and, more importantly, why they chose to do so.

¡Durante los pasados meses, Casa Taller Cangrejera se ha desbordado de creatividad y de producción cultural! Hemos tenido la casa llena con nuestres artistas residentes, el equipo de AgitArte y artistas colaboradores, para llevar a las calles por primera vez, El Gran Desencajonamiento, el Primero de Mayo y con motivo del 20.º aniversario de Papel Machete. El proceso creativo de la última pieza de Papel Machete incluyó la exploración artística colaborativa entre artistas veteranos de Papel Machete y jóvenes artistas. Además, se utilizaron las técnicas narrativas de la cantastoria, el teatro de objetos y crankies. Estamos muy orgulloses del increíble trabajo que ha surgido a partir de Juventudes, un proyecto que es a la vez un sueño, tanto como una invitación a volver a nuestras raíces.

AgitArte se fundó en 1997 en Lynn, Massachusetts, como un proyecto de educación popular juvenil, hip-hop y teatro liderado por un grupo intergeneracional de artistas y miembros de la comunidad que crearon una plataforma para denunciar los problemas que afectaban a su comunidad.

For the last several months, Casa Taller Cangrejera has been brimming with cultural production and creativity! We’ve had a full house with our artists in residence, AgitArte staff, and collaborating artists, rallying to bring El Gran Desencajonamiento to the streets for the first time on May Day and Papel Machete’s 20th anniversary. The creative process for Papel Machete’s latest piece included collaborative storytelling and artistic exploration between Papel Machete veteran artists and the youth artists, and utilized the storytelling techniques of cantastoria, object theater, and crankies. We are so proud of the brilliant work that has emerged through Juventudes, a project that is both a dream and an invitation to return to our roots.

AgitArte was founded in 1997 in Lynn, MA as a youth popular education, hip-hop, and theater project led by an intergenerational group of artists and community members who created a platform to speak out about issues impacting their neighborhood.

¡Joyce Sánchez Ríos es nuestra joven artista residente en Casa Taller!
Desde hace un par de meses, nuestra compañera teatrera y orgullosa salinense, Joyce Sánchez Ríos, es artista residente en Casa Taller Cangrejera. Joyce, artista y también miembro de Jóvenes del 98, se integró al elenco de La víspera de la abolición el año pasado, proceso que culminó en cuatro funciones en el histórico Teatro de la UPR. Desde entonces, colabora desde Juventudes asumiendo diversos roles entre los que se destaca como participante del grupo de estudio y entrenamiento hacia una nueva etapa de Papel Machete, como asistente en la coordinación de presentaciones teatrales y en las tareas de cuido colectivo como es la coordinación y preparación de alimentos antes de cada taller o ensayo. ¡Es una alegría inmensa tenerte en casa, Joyce! Tu energía, liderato y compromiso son combustible imprescindible en la esperanza y la lucha.

Joyce Sánchez Ríos is our young artist-in-residence at Casa Taller! For the past couple of months, our fellow theater artist and proud native of Salinas, Joyce Sánchez Ríos, has been an artist-in-residence at Casa Taller Cangrejera. Joyce, an artist and member of Jóvenes del 98, joined the cast of On the Eve of Abolition last year, a process that culminated in four performances at the historic UPR Theater. Since then, she has been collaborating on Juventudes, taking on various roles, notably as a participant in the group of young people who are studying and training for a new phase of Papel Machete. Joyce is also an assistant in coordinating theatrical performances, and in collective care tasks such as coordinating and preparing food before each workshop or rehearsal. It is a tremendous delight to have you home, Joyce! Your energy, leadership, and commitment are the necessary fuel for hope and the struggle.

El 23 de abril participamos de la Marcha por la Justicia Reproductiva, en defensa de la autonomía de las mujeres y personas gestantes ante un escenario legislativo cada vez más restrictivo. En meses recientes se han aprobado y propuesto medidas que buscan redefinir el marco legal del embarazo, incluyendo disposiciones que reconocen al feto como “persona” dentro del Código Penal y proyectos que podrían facilitar el camino hacia la criminalización del aborto. Aunque el aborto continúa siendo legal en la isla, estos cambios generan incertidumbre jurídica y amenazan el derecho a decidir y el acceso a servicios de salud reproductiva.

Como parte de la preparación, AgitArte ofreció dos talleres de creación de pancartas facilitados por Javier Maldonado-O’Farrill, en los que acompañamos a integrantes de diversas organizaciones en el uso de nuestro Art Kit como herramienta de organización y expresión.

Durante los talleres, les participantes desarrollaron mensajes y luego participaron en la proyección y transferencia de textos, corte de plantillas, montaje de superficies y aplicación de la técnica de estarcido. Más allá de la producción de pancartas, cada participante regresó a su organización con nuevas destrezas, ampliando el alcance del taller y aportando a la marcha mensajes claros y solidarios.

On April 23, we participated in the March for Reproductive Justice, in defense of the autonomy of women and pregnant people in the face of an increasingly restrictive legislative landscape. In recent months, measures have been passed and proposed that seek to redefine the legal framework surrounding pregnancy, including provisions that recognize the fetus as a “person” under the Penal Code and bills that could pave the way for the criminalization of abortion. Although abortion remains legal on the island, these changes create legal uncertainty and threaten the right to choose and access to reproductive health services.

As part of the preparation, AgitArte offered two banner-making workshops facilitated by Javier Maldonado-O’Farrill, in which we supported members of various organizations in using our Art Kit as a tool for organizing and expression.

During the workshops, participants developed messages and then engaged in the projection and transfer of texts, cutting stencils, mounting surfaces, and applying the stenciling technique. Beyond the production of banners, each participant returned to their organization with new skills, expanding the workshop’s impact and contributing clear, solidarity-driven messages to the march.

Se acerca el Primero de Mayo… y este año celebramos, ¡los 20 de Papel Machete! ¡Qué camino el recorrido!

El primero de mayo del 2006, Papel Machete salió a la calle por vez primera como respuesta a la crisis política y económica en Puerto Rico. Ante el cierre y tranque del gobierno central, miles de empleados públicos quedaron en la calle, con licencia y sin sueldo, incluyendo al magisterio. En esa ocasión, un grupo de jóvenes trabajadores, organizadores comunitarios, maestras, artistas y estudiantes se juntaron para denunciar y ejercer presión mediática haciendo uso del arte visual y la performance.

Nuestro trabajo es generado colectivamente, liderado por artistas que facilitan procesos creativos que incluyen la formación política, así como la construcción. A lo largo de veinte años hemos generado muchísimo trabajo cultural con la mirada fija en nuestra liberación colectiva. Hoy, entrenamos a nuestra juventud para que lideren procesos que agiten y sostengan la visión por otro par de décadas.

Esta nueva generación de Papel Machete presentará su nueva obra de teatro popular callejero, El gran desencajonamiento, una obra corta sobre unos trabajadores que desarrollan una conciencia de clase y se apoderan de los medios de producción al neutralizar a su jefe —un influencer contratado para vender a Puerto Rico a los colonizadores—. Se trata de una representación narrativa al estilo callejero que utiliza música popular, sátira política y elementos del teatro de títeres y el arte performativo para contar una historia de rebelión: una invitación a la organización y el activismo de la clase trabajadora.

May Day is coming up, and this year, we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of Papel Machete! What a journey it’s been!

On May 1, 2006, Papel Machete hit the streets for the first time in response to Puerto Rico’s political and economic crisis. Thousands of public employees, including teachers, were left out on the street on leave without pay due to the central government’s shutdown and blockade. A group of young workers, community organizers, teachers, artists, and students came together to denounce the situation and exert media pressure through visual art and performance.

Our work is generated collectively and led by artists who facilitate creative processes that include political education and construction. Over the last twenty years, we have produced a great deal of cultural work, keeping our sights set on our collective liberation. Today, we are training our youth to lead processes that will energize and sustain this vision for the next couple decades.

Desde principios de año, Casa Taller ha estado más activa que nunca, con una amplia gama de proyectos, que incluyen el Proyecto Juventudes, la residencia de Agustín Ríos, los ensayos de Jóvenes del 98 y la creación de diseños para tres marchas diferentes.

¡ESENCIA NO VA!

El sábado 28 de marzo salimos a la calle junto a Defiende a Cabo Rojo para denunciar Esencia, un proyecto de lujo residencial y turístico que abarca aproximadamente 1,549 cuerdas en Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Diseñado principalmente para los ultra-ricos, el proyecto beneficiaría a grupos de inversión extranjeros junto con empresas privadas locales. El proyecto amenaza con acelerar el desplazamiento, agravar la desigualdad y crear condiciones que hagan cada vez más difícil para la clase trabajadora permanecer en Cabo Rojo y en Puerto Rico. El proyecto Esencia extraería aproximadamente 1.5 millones de galones de agua al día, impactando gravemente los recursos hídricos donde ya hay escasez, así como los ecosistemas, la agricultura y las comunidades locales.

La movilización reunió a miles de personas y a más de 60 organizaciones de toda la isla, una de las primeras manifestaciones importantes de los últimos tiempos convocada por un municipio de la zona oeste. En solidaridad con la marcha convocada en PR, “Pa’ la calle contra Esencia”, se gestaron acciones en distintas comunidades de la diáspora enfatizando que, ¡ESENCIA NO VA!

Para la marcha, contribuimos diseñando el cartel “¡ESENCIA NO VA!”, que se pasquinó por toda la isla, y construyendo nuestro primer títere gigante en años: el Guabairo, un ave endémica nocturna, en peligro de extinción, que habita el suroeste de PR incluyendo Cabo Rojo, Peñuelas, Yauco, Guayanilla y el bosque seco de Guánica. La creación del títere tomó tres semanas de conceptualización y construcción, y se convirtió en uno de los símbolos más visibles de la manifestación. Como lo describió una de las organizadoras, fue el “corazón volador” de la protesta.

El mensaje que se escuchó en las calles fue claro: nuestra tierra no está en venta, nuestras comunidades no son desechables — ¡ESENCIA NO VA!

On Saturday, March 28, we took to the streets alongside Defiende a Cabo Rojo to denounce Esencia, a proposed luxury residential and tourist enclave spanning approximately 1,504 acres in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Designed primarily for the ultra-wealthy, the project would benefit foreign investment groups along with private local firms. Meanwhile, the development threatens to accelerate displacement, deepen inequality, and create conditions that make it increasingly difficult for working people to remain in Cabo Rojo—and in Puerto Rico as a whole. The Esencia project would extract approximately 1.5 million gallons of water per day, severely impacting water resources in an area where shortages already exist. The project would dramatically alter ecosystems, agriculture, and local communities.

The mobilization brought together thousands of people and more than 60 organizations from across the island—one of the first major demonstrations in recent memory called by a west coast municipality. In solidarity with the march organized in Puerto Rico, “Pa’ la calle contra Esencia,” actions were organized in various communities of the diaspora, emphasizing that “¡ESENCIA NO VA!”

For the march, we contributed by designing the ¡ESENCIA NO VA! poster—plastered throughout the island—and by building our first giant puppet in years: the Guabairo, an endemic, endangered nocturnal bird that inhabits southwestern Puerto Rico, including Cabo Rojo, Peñuelas, Yauco, Guayanilla, and the dry forest of Guánica. The puppet took three full weeks to conceptualize and build, and became one of the most visible symbols of the demonstration. As one of the organizers described, it was the “flying heart” of the protest.

The message from the streets was clear: our land is not for sale, and our communities are not disposable— ¡ESENCIA NO VA!

PROYECTO JUVENTUDES

Con el apoyo de María Fund, lanzamos un proyecto nuevo de juventud en verano de 2025. El proyecto de arte y cultura como medio de formación, resistencia, organización y transformación social para nuestras juventudes, busca fomentar la participación activa de nuestres jóvenes en AgitArte y ofrecer capacitación artística, organizativa y experiencia laboral dentro de tres proyectos puntuales: La Víspera de la Abolición, La Quince: De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca y 1ero de Mayo: 20 años de Papel Machete.

Ya empezamos el tercer y último evento del proyecto, el aniversario 20º de Papel Machete que será una celebración de la historia del colectivo donde se presentarán piezas de repertorio, así como piezas nuevas, conversatorios sobre la trayectoria, el momento político actual y diversos talleres. En los próximos meses, vamos a ofrecer a les jóvenes talleres de formación política y sobre la historia del Papel Machete, en nuestro espacio de Casa Taller Cangrejera.

YOUTH PROJECT

With the support of María Fund, we launched a new youth project in the summer of 2025. The project, which uses art and culture as a means of education, resistance, organization, and social transformation for our youth, seeks to encourage the active participation of our young people in AgitArte and offer artistic and organizational training and work experience within three specific projects: On The Eve of Abolition, La Quince: “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca”, and May 1st: 20 Years of Papel Machete.

We have already begun the third and final project, Papel Machete’s 20th anniversary, which will be a celebration of the collective’s history featuring repertoire pieces and new works, discussions about its trajectory and the current political moment, and various workshops. In the coming months, we will offer our youth cohort workshops in political education and the history of Papel Machete at our Casa Taller Cangrejera space.

Durante el mes de febrero, nuestro compañero Agustín regresa a Casa Taller Cangrejera en calidad de artista residente. Esta vez, lo hace para la creación de una pieza personal que, según nos cuenta en el vídeo a modo de provocación, está plagada de elementos fantásticos que se entrelazan con datos, historia de luchas obreras, experiencias familiares y curiosidades del mundo del cañaveral. Ambos abuelos trabajaron en la segunda central azucarera más grande del Caribe, la Central Guánica, en donde a su bisabuela, ¡se le apareció un ángel! Agustín es músico, compositor y artista, aunque se ha destacado principalmente en Papel Machete por sus valiosas contribuciones musicales, también ha trabajado en la creación de historias colectivas y construcción de títeres. ¡Qué lindo tenerte en casa, Tini!

During the month of February, our comrade Agustín returns to Casa Taller Cangrejera as a resident artist. This time, he is here to create a personal piece which, as he tells us in the video by way of provocation, is full of fantastic elements intertwined with facts, the history of workers’ struggles, family experiences, and curiosities from the world of sugar cane. Both of his grandfathers worked at the second largest sugar mill in the Caribbean, Central Guánica, where his great-grandmother had an angel appear to her! Agustín is a musician, composer, and artist. And although he has mainly stood out in Papel Machete for his valuable musical contributions, he has also worked on creating collective stories and building puppets. How nice to have you home, Tini!

¡El Boletín regresa! Gracias a quienes nos apoyaron el año pasado. Estamos listes y entusiasmades por lo que trae este año para nuestro trabajo y nuestros movimientos. Seguimos en compromiso con el amor y la lucha.

Los últimos seis meses del año nos vimos inmersos en la producción, montaje y cuidado de dos grandes proyectos. Por un lado, la producción y puesta en escena de La Víspera de la Abolición, la obra abolicionista de Papel Machete en colaboración con nuestra querida maestra y colega, Deborah Hunt, así como compañeres titiriteres y jóvenes de nuestra comunidad artística. La otra, la exposición colectiva “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca” en el espacio cultural tipo “pop-up”, La Quince, gestado en colaboración con Mijente en el contexto de la residencia artística de Bad Bunny en Puerto Rico.

Ambos proyectos aspiran y apuestan a la construcción de mundos que nos permitan explorar prácticas y muestras de futuros liberados contadas y orquestradas por nuestras comunidades, reales e imaginadas. Aquí les compartimos algunos enlaces para que rememoremos juntes lo que fueron ambas puestas.

El Boletín is back! Thank you to all who supported us last year. We look forward to and stay ready for what this year brings for our work and our movements as we remain committed to love and struggle.

The last six months of the year saw us immersed in the production, staging, and care of two major projects. On the one hand, the production and staging of On The Eve of Abolition, Papel Machete’s abolitionist play in collaboration with our beloved teacher and colleague, Deborah Hunt, as well as fellow puppeteers and young people from our artistic community. The other was the collective exhibition “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca” in the pop-up cultural space La Quince, developed in collaboration with Mijente in the context of Bad Bunny’s artistic residency in Puerto Rico.

Both projects aspire to and are committed to building worlds that allow us to explore practices and examples of liberated futures told and orchestrated by our communities, both real and imagined.

¡Abajo el imperialismo y fuera yanquis del Caribe!

Después de más de 20 años, la base militar estadounidense en Ceiba, Puerto Rico, reabrió en noviembre de 2025 con el falso pretexto del tráfico de drogas y con el propósito de extraer petróleo de Venezuela y otras partes de América Latina. Después de que la población se organizara para desmilitarizar Ceiba y Vieques a principios de la década de 2000, la presencia del ejército ha enfurecido y vuelto a traumatizar a los residentes que sufrieron los bombardeos y el ruido de los aviones hace dos décadas. Desde el resurgimiento militar, grupos como Jornada Se Acabaron Las Promesas y Madres contra la Guerra han organizado protestas contra la invasión de Venezuela y todas las bases militares en Puerto Rico. El secuestro del presidente Maduro, las operaciones militares y los ataques en el Caribe, y el creciente terror del ICE en Minneapolis forman parte de la violencia imperialista de Estados Unidos dirigida contra los pueblos oprimidos, tanto en Estados Unidos como en el extranjero, para acumular riqueza y poder para la clase dominante. Down with imperialism and Yankees out of the Caribbean!

After more than 20 years, the US military base in Ceiba, Puerto Rico reopened in November 2025 under the false pretext of drug trafficking and for the purpose of extracting oil from Venezuela and other parts of Latin America. After the people organized to demilitarize Ceiba and Vieques in the early 2000s, the presence of the military has angered and retraumatized residents who suffered through the bombings and sound of aircrafts two decades ago. Since the military resurgence, groups like Jornada Se Acabaron Las Promesas and Madres contra la Guerra have organized protests against the invasion of Venezuela and all military bases in Puerto Rico. The kidnapping of President Maduro, military operations and attacks in the Caribbean, and escalating ICE terror in Minneapolis are all part of US imperial violence aimed at oppressed people, both in the US and abroad, to hoard wealth and power of the ruling class. ¡Aborto Libre, Seguro y Accesible!

En los últimos meses, dos enmiendas de ley -aprobadas sin vistas públicas y por descargue- amenazan gravemente la salud pública y ponen en peligro la vida y la autonomía de las mujeres y personas gestantes. La primera, conocida como la PS 504, enmienda al Código Civil al establecer que “todo ser humano concebido y en cualquier etapa de gestación dentro del útero, es reconocido para efectos legales como persona natural.” La segunda, conocida como la 923 y aprobada en la Cámara en enero, enmienda el Código Penal redefiniendo el delito de asesinato para incluir la muerte de un concebido no nacido en cualquier etapa de gestación.

La coalición Aborto Libre, profesionales de la salud y organizaciones que trabajan por los derechos reproductivos repudian ambas medidas, que dan paso a la criminalización del proceso médico entorpeciendo el acceso al aborto digno, que a pesar de la confusión general, es y sigue siendo legal en PR.

Los mismos sectores que apoyan estas medidas se oponen a la educación sexual con perspectiva de género, afectando los derechos reproductivos, la planificación familiar, intimidad y autonomía sobre nuestras cuerpas. ¡Nuestras vidas no son un juego político!

Free, Safe, and Accessible Abortion!

In recent months, two amendments to the law— approved without public hearings and by discharge—seriously threaten public health and endanger the lives and autonomy of women and pregnant people. The first, known as PS 504, amends the Civil Code by establishing that “every human being conceived and at any stage of gestation within the womb is recognized for legal purposes as a natural person.” The second, known as 923 and approved by the House in January, amends the Penal Code by redefining the crime of murder to include the death of an unborn child at any stage of gestation.

The Free Abortion coalition, health professionals, and organizations working for reproductive rights condemn both measures, as they not only put the lives of women and pregnant people at risk, but also pave the way for the criminalization of the medical process, hindering access to dignified abortion, which, despite the general confusion, is and remains legal in Puerto Rico.

The same sectors that support these measures oppose gender-sensitive sex education, affecting reproductive rights, family planning, privacy, and autonomy over our bodies. Our lives are not a political game!

Esencia - fuera de nuestras costas

Este año habrá un sinnúmero de protestas y marchas para enfrentar la creciente amenaza de desplazamiento comunitario y la privatización de playas en Puerto Rico.

El proyecto Esencia, cerca de la playa Los Pozos en Cabo Rojo, propone un desarrollo de lujo de uso mixto que incluye 1,132 residencias y 520 unidades hoteleras, siendo su componente mayormente residencial. Aun así, la Compañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico le concedió cerca de $498 millones en créditos contributivos bajo leyes diseñadas principalmente para incentivar la construcción de hoteles.

La comunidad local y organizaciones ambientales señalan posibles impactos sobre hábitats protegidos y especies en peligro, mayor presión sobre los recursos de agua y la pérdida de acceso público a las playas en lugar de un modelo de desarrollo centrado en las necesidades de la comunidad. Esencia -Off Our Shores

This year, there will be countless protests and marches to face the growing threat of community displacement and beach privatization in Puerto Rico.

The Esencia project, near Los Pozos beach in Cabo Rojo, proposes a luxury mixed-use development that includes 1,132 residences and 520 hotel units, with the residential component being the largest. Despite this, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company granted it nearly $498 million in tax credits under laws designed primarily to encourage hotel construction.

The local community and environmental organizations point to potential impacts on protected habitats and endangered species, increased stress on water resources, and loss of public access to beaches, rather than a development model focused on community needs. Sitting with Mawa’s words, we imagine a future where the people have thrown off the chains of colonialism. We imagine that we have won, yet we continue until every last one of us is free.

As we look toward the end of 2025, we hold the complexity of imagining liberatory futures, while grappling with the daily struggles and immense challenges of the present. This year in Puerto Rico, we’ve seen ICE raids in our Haitian and Dominican neighborhoods, the militarization of the coast in pursuit of U.S. imperialism in the Caribbean, infrastructure failure that left thousands without water for days, and we learned that only one public school has been rebuilt since Hurricane Maria despite millions of dollars allocated for rebuilding schools. The cost of living and surviving in Puerto Rico, like many places in the U.S., coupled with the further draining of public services and continued coloniality, choke and hinder the growth of our people. But still, we exist and we resist.

We started this year looking closely at the political landscape surrounding our work, assessing new risks, and discussing actions needed to protect and resource our people and the work. We identified a desire to experiment with new and alternative sources of income to diversify how we fund our projects and continue to exist in an increasingly violent environment.

In July, AgitArte and Mijente opened La Quince, a pop-up cultural space that housed the exhibition, De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca, which included a solidarity shop, and a resident artist barber. At the cusp between Santurce and Miramar, La Quince served as a free space for both locals and visitors to engage with and support the long-time political struggles in Puerto Rico, all within the backdrop of Bad Bunny’s summer residency. De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca exceeded our expectations in terms of attendance and community activation. With more than 3,000 visitors and several well attended community events, it affirmed the profound need for cultural and political spaces for our movements.

In keeping with this spirit of trying new things, this year we reimagined our annual report and launched the first issue of the Look Back, a free, zine-style publication featuring reflective articles from our artists and collaborators about our work between 2022 and 2024. Many of you received this zine in the mail and your feedback has encouraged us to continue this new format for sharing back our work.

In October, after many months of planning, building on top of five years of creation, production and presentation, On the Eve of Abolition returned to Puerto Rico with four performances at the historic theater at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. We have grown and continue to commit ourselves to dismantling and transforming the prison system through love. Each embodied character has given us new perspectives and practices to help us survive in a world that oppresses and discards us, robbing us of our humanity. We thank all who witnessed this most recent iteration of Papel Machete’s On the Eve of Abolition and we continue to seek pathways to share the play with communities suffering within the prison industrial complex.

Since 1997, AgitArte’s mission and work has been to educate and agitate, using the most powerful tool at our disposal: art and cultural solidarity. In these last 28 years, our work and the conditions it exists within have shifted, and so have the resources that flow to and nourish this work.

RESUMEN DE FIN DE AÑO

Ante el inminente colapso del Imperio, quienes estábamos en el camino de la lucha por la liberación, nos unimos. Logramos realizar nuestros sueños ancestrales, “Nuestra fuerza revolucionaria”. Nuestra fuerza revolucionaria levantó los mares en una oleada de victorias.

Al reflexionar sobre las palabras de Mawa, imaginamos un futuro en el que los pueblos oprimidos se han liberado de las cadenas del colonialismo. Imaginamos que hemos vencido, sin embargo seguimos luchando hasta que todes y cada uno de nosotres seamos libres.

Al acercarnos al final del 2025, enfrentamos la complejidad de imaginar futuros liberadores, mientras lidiamos con las luchas diarias y los inmensos desafíos del presente. Este año, en Puerto Rico, hemos sido testigos de las redadas de ICE en nuestros barrios de familias haitianas y dominicanas, de la militarización de las costas en el empeño imperialista estadounidense en su expansión en el Caribe, de los fallos en las infraestructuras que dejaron a miles de personas sin agua durante días; además de enterarnos que solo se ha reconstruido una escuela pública desde el huracán María, a pesar de los millones de dólares asignados para la reconstrucción de éstas. El costo de vivir y sobrevivir en Puerto Rico, como en muchos lugares de los Estados Unidos, junto al drenaje de los servicios públicos y la privatización de los mismos, así como la continua colonialidad, estrangulan e imposibilitan el crecimiento de nuestro pueblo. Aún así, existimos y resistimos.

Comenzamos este año analizando detenidamente el panorama político que rodea nuestro trabajo, evaluamos nuevos riesgos y discutimos las medidas necesarias para proteger y proveer recursos a nuestra gente y a nuestro trabajo. Identificamos el deseo de experimentar con nuevas fuentes de ingresos, así como alternativas para diversificar la manera en que financiamos nuestros proyectos para continuar existiendo en un entorno cada vez más violento.

olucraran y apoyaran las largas luchas políticas en Puerto Rico; todo esto con la residencia de verano de Bad Bunny como trasfondo. “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca” superó nuestras expectativas en términos de asistencia y activación de la comunidad. Con más de 3,000 visitantes y varios eventos comunitarios muy concurridos, el espacio confirmó la profunda necesidad de espacios culturales y políticos para nuestros movimientos.

En la misma línea de probar cosas nuevas, este año rediseñamos nuestro informe anual y lanzamos el primer número de nuestro “Look Back”, una publicación gratuita tipo fanzine con artículos reflexivos de nuestros artistas y colaboradores sobre nuestro trabajo realizado entre 2022-2024. Muchos de ustedes recibieron este fanzine por correo y sus comentarios nos han animado a seguir con este nuevo formato para compartir nuestro trabajo.

En octubre, tras muchos meses de planificación, más de cinco años de creación, producción y varias presentaciones, La víspera de la abolición regresó a Puerto Rico con cuatro presentaciones en el histórico teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Río Piedras. A partir de este proceso, hemos crecido y seguimos comprometides con la transformación y el desmantelamiento del sistema carcelario a través del amor. Cada personaje encarnado nos ha aportado nuevas perspectivas, así como prácticas que nos ayudan a sobrevivir en un mundo que nos oprime y nos descarta, restándole a nuestra humanidad. Agradecemos a todes los que presenciaron esta última versión de La víspera de la abolición de Papel Machete y seguimos buscando formas de compartir la obra con las comunidades afectadas por el sistema industrial penitenciario.

Volvemos, tras un breve descanso, con nuestra publicación, El Boletín, para noviembre. Este mes traemos una reflexión y una bella documentación de nuestra presentación de La víspera de la abolición en el histórico teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Además, incluímos el programa digital , con un resumen escena por escena de la obra, más un agradecimiento especial a nuestros socios de enlace comunitario, Prison Radio y Micelio Abolicionista. También destacamos nuestra Tiendita, donde encontrarás artículos a la venta del proyecto La víspera de la abolición, así como otras obras de arte, camisetas, fanzines, pegatinas, etc., que dan visibilidad a las luchas en Puerto Rico y Estados Unidos. Gracias a todes los que presenciaron el regreso de La víspera de la abolición a Puerto Rico. Los mensajes de afirmación y apoyo nos animan a seguir adelante y refuerzan nuestro compromiso con esta labor cultural.

After a short break, we return with our November issue of El Boletín. This month we bring you a reflection and beautiful documentation of our presentation of On the Eve of Abolition at the historic theater of the University of Puerto Rico, including our digital program which includes a scene-by-scene of the play, and shoutouts to our Community Engagement partners, Prison Radio and Micelio Abolicionista. We also highlight our Tiendita, featuring custom swag from the On the Eve of Abolition project, as well as other artwork, tshirts, zines, stickers, etc. lifting up struggles in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Thank you to all who witnessed the return of On the Eve of Abolition to Puerto Rico. The messages of affirmation and support keep us going and reinforce our commitment to this cultural work.

Finally, last month was the closing of the exhibition, De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca at La Quince, our pop-up cultural solidarity space co-created with Mijente. Thank you to the more than 3,000 who visited the exhibit and to all of the artists who contributed!

LA VÍSPERA DE LA ABOLICIÓN UPR 2025

Llegamos a partir de las lecciones casi perdidas de la historia, moldeadas por generaciones de antepasados que lucharon toda su vida por ese raro soplo de libertad y anhelaron con todo su corazón que nosotres, sus descendientes, pudiéramos algún día respirar aire en libertad (…)” Mumia Abu Jamal

Papel Machete regresó al escenario, esta vez en el Teatro de la IUPI, a presentar su versión más reciente de la obra, La víspera de la abolición, con nuevas escenas desde donde desarrollan y amplían la ruta abolicionista. Para esta puesta, se juntó una corillx increíble de artistes, tanto de Papel Machete como colaboradores, y a través del mundo mágico de títeres, máscaras, objetos y música en vivo, contaron esta historia original radical frente a un público que superó las 1,500 personas en sus 4 únicas funciones.

Esta obra es resultado de un proceso colectivo de creación que ha tomado años de investigación, construcción, de fortalecer y nutrir viejas y nuevas relaciones… hemos crecido y seguimos apostando al desmantelamiento del sistema carcelario y a la transformación desde el amor. Cada personaje encarnado nos ha regalado perspectivas, nuevas prácticas para observar desde dónde hemos tenido que operar para sobrevivir en un mundo que nos oprime y nos descarta, robándole a nuestra humanidad.

Nuestro colaborador comunitario, Prison Radio nos acompañó una vez más con una mesa comunitaria en donde compartieron información crítica de compañeres en prisión como Mumia Abu Jamal, más tuvieron disponible la más reciente publicación del periodista y prisionero político, titulada “Beneath The Mountain: An Anti Prison Reader”. Además, nos acompañó la colectiva local, Micelio Abolicionista, que co-crea comunidades libres de castigo y encierro, sin cárceles ni policías.

Queremos agradecer de todo corazón la participación de les jóvenes del Proyecto Juventudes y a quienes apoyaron con su subvención para que fuesen parte de esta producción, María Fund.

Papel Machete returned to the stage, this time at the IUPI Theatre, to present the latest version of their play On The Eve of Abolition, featuring new scenes that explore the abolitionist movement in greater depth. An incredible group of artists from Papel Machete and beyond came together for this production and, through puppets, masks, objects and live music, told this radical, original story to an audience of over 1,500 people across four performances.

The play is the result of years of collective creativity, research, construction and strengthening of old and new relationships. We have grown and continue to commit ourselves to dismantling and transforming the prison system through love. Each embodied character has given us new perspectives and practices to help us survive in a world that oppresses and discards us, robbing us of our humanity.

Our community partner, Prison Radio, joined us once again with a community table where they shared important information about prisoners such as Mumia Abu-Jamal, a journalist and political prisoner. They made available the latest publication by, Mumia Abu-Jamal and Jennifer Black, entitled Beneath the Mountain: An Anti-Prison Reader. We were also joined by Micelio Abolicionista, a local collective that co-creates communities free of punishment and confinement, without prisons or police.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Proyecto Juventudes for their participation in this production of On the Eve of Abolition, and to the María Fund for their financial support, which made their involvement in this production possible.

RECORRIDO De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca

El 4 de octubre cerramos oficialmente la exposición De aquí nadie nos saca en La Quince, en Santurce, una colaboración entre AgitArte y Mijente para desarrollar un proyecto pop-up basado en la solidaridad cultural.

La Quince superó todas las expectativas como espacio. Con más de 3,000 visitantes y programación dinámica por organizaciones comunitarias, la exposición contó con un barbero artista residente y una tienda solidaria que ofrecía obras y artículos de artistas y organizaciones donde se apoyaba directamente su trabajo. La exposición multimedia apareció en los medios de comunicación, con cobertura en Los Ángeles Times, Remezcla, Telemundo y El Nuevo Día, entre otros. On October 4, we officially closed the doors of our exhibition “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca” at La Quince in Santurce, a collaboration between AgitArte and Mijente to develop a pop-up project based on cultural solidarity.

La Quince has been a space that exceeded its expectations. With over 3,000 attendees and highly successful events by community organizations, it featured -as part of the exhibit- a resident artist barber and a solidarity shop offering selected swag from highlighted artists and organizations to directly support their work. The multimedia exhibition has been featured in the media, including coverage in The Los Angeles Times, Remezcla, Telemundo, and El Nuevo Día, to name a few. A 20 años del asesinato de Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, a manos del FBI, Casa Museo Filiberto Ojeda Ríos convocó una marcha en Hormigueros liderada por lxs invitadxs del colectivo @papelmachete cuál culminó con un acto político y cultural; La presentación del proyecto de educación popular y participativa “End the Debt! Decolonize! Liberate Puerto Rico! Scroll” y un concierto.

Twenty years after Filiberto Ojeda Ríos was assassinated by the FBI, Casa Museo Filiberto Ojeda Ríos organized a march in Hormigueros led by guests from the Papel Machete collective. This culminated in a political and cultural event. The popular and participatory education project “End the Debt! Decolonise! Liberate Puerto Rico! Scroll”, followed by a concert.

La frase “Yankee go home!” es un grito de protesta al colonialismo gringo en Puerto Rico. Tradicionalmente se le llama yanquis a los colonizadores de Estados Unidos, por la hegemonía política del noreste de la nación y el imperialismo que controla a Puerto Rico.

La consigna es un “vete pa’l carajo” a los sistemas coloniales y prácticas de los estadounidenses desde su invasión a nuestras islas en el 1898.

Reconocemos y celebramos las consignas populares, y a la vez repudiamos todo el proyecto de “settler state” que es los Estados Unidos de América que logró por medio del desplazamiento de comunidades indígenas milenarias que vivían en lo que hoy llaman sus tierras. Por eso no tienen “home”, y su proyecto es adueñarse y apropiarse colonizando todo lo que les convenga a su sistema capitalista de explotación y miseria.

The line “Yankee go home!” is a cry of protest against gringo colonialism in Puerto Rico. Traditionally, the colonizers of the United States are called Yankees, because of the political hegemony of the northeast of the nation and the imperialism that controls Puerto Rico.

The slogan is a “fuck off” to the colonial systems and practices of Americans since their invasion of our islands in 1898.

We recognize and celebrate popular slogans, and at the same time repudiate the entire “settler state” project that is the United States of America, achieved through the displacement of millennial Indigenous communities who lived in what they call America today. That’s why they don’t have a “home”, and their project is to own and appropriate by colonizing everything that benefits their capitalist system of exploitation and misery.

Orígenes de la obra

La obra que aparece en “¡Yankee go home!” se presentó originalmente en nuestra sección Palabra del día del podcast When We Fight, We Win!. La palabra era Racismo medioambiental y el arte, creada por Osvaldo Budet, presentaba unas imágenes históricas muy impactantes que reflejaban momentos de la historia de Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico en los que el pueblo se resistió a las políticas y proyectos perjudiciales del Gobierno y las corporaciones, incluida en la exitosa campaña popular para expulsar al ejército estadounidense de Vieques a finales de la década de 1990 y principios de la de 2000.

Resistencia a la militarización estadounidense en Puerto Rico

El relanzamiento de este arte con el lema ¡Yankee go home! le da un nuevo impulso a la imagen, mientras simultaneamente continúa la activación de AgitArte respondiendo de forma creativa a las actuales manifestaciones del imperialismo estadounidense en Puerto Rico y en todo el mundo. En 2017, AgitArte publicó una serie de carteles que captaban la ira que muchos sentían inmediatamente después del huracán María:

• Ocupación Militar Military Occupation

• ¡Liberen la ayuda! Release the Aid!

La resistencia a la militarización estadounidense forma parte de la historia de Puerto Rico desde que este país invadió la isla en 1898. La relación entre la militarización, la extracción de recursos y el turismo, y el racismo medioambiental forma parte de este proyecto fracasado del capitalismo que se está desmoronando ante nuestros ojos.

Origins of the Artwork

The artwork featured in “Yankee go home!” was originally featured in our Word of the Day segment of When We Fight, We Win!: The Podcast. The word was Environmental Racism and the artwork created by Osvaldo Budet featured strong historical imagery reflecting moments in U.S. and Puerto Rican history where the people resisted harmful government and corporate policies and projects, including the successful grassroots campaign to get the U.S. military out of Vieques in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Resistance to U.S. Militarization in Puerto Rico

The re-release of this artwork with the slogan “Yankee go home!” breathes new life into the image, while also continuing AgitArte’s work of creatively responding to new manifestations of U.S. imperialism in Puerto Rico and around the world. Starting in 2017, AgitArte released a series of posters which captured the rage many were feeling in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane María:

• Fuck FEMA and the U.S. Military

• Military Occupation

• Release the Aid!

Resistance to U.S. militarization has been an essential part of Puerto Rican history since the U.S. invaded these lands in 1898.

The connections between militarization, resource extraction, tourism, and environmental racism are all a part of this failed project of capitalism which is crumbling before our eyes.

De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca

It's been just over a month since La Quince opened. Organized by Mijente and AgitArte, this pop-up cultural space was born out of cultural solidarity. The initial intention was to find a local solidarity space to exhibit “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca”, but given the current economic climate, displacement, gentrification, and rapid buying and selling in the area, we secured a storefront that had been abandoned for years, with a deliberately anti-museum approach, informal and open to all.

After a hectic week of installation, DJ Cano Cangrejo and DJ Rebel Betty got the opening party started, making even the most tired bodies move to the beat. We are grateful for the support of the artists and friends who helped us during this time! “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca” brings together an extensive sample of works by 39 local artists and organizations whose work or praxis is embedded in social movements. The works on view conspire, deconstruct and construct proposals for a world in which we can live in harmony with nature and with each other. The exhibition calls for context and action, dancing and protest, urging us not to be just another tourist: it invites us to go beyond the surface, get to know the collectives, understand what is happening, and learn how to support them.

“De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca”, which originates and ends on the street, will be open from Wednesday to Sunday, 2–8 pm, until 5 October.  You can find out more about the exhibition online in the curatorial essay, written by Puerto Rican historian Jorell Meléndez-Badillo. A más de un mes de la apertura del espacio cultural tipo “pop up”, La Quince, gestado desde la solidaridad cultural por las organizaciones Mijente y AgitArte, seguimos recibiendo personas entusiasmadas por aprender y estrechar lazos de resistencia desde diversas localidades, tanto de Puerto Rico como de Estados Unidos. 

La intención inicial fue conseguir un espacio solidario para la puesta de “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca”, pero ante el panorama económico actual, el desplazamiento, la gentrificación, así como la acelerada compra y venta en la zona, finalmente aseguramos un “storefront”, abandonado por años, con una apuesta deliberadamente anti museística, para invitar a entrar sin formalismos. 

La apertura fue amenizada por DJ Cano Cangrejo y DJ Rebel Betty quienes nos hicieron mover las cuerpas cansadas después de un montaje intenso que duró apenas semana y media. ¡Agradecemos el apoyo de les artistas y amistades que nos apoyaron durante el montaje! La selección incluye organizaciones y artistas con obra o praxis insertadas en movimientos sociales y reúne una muestra extensa de trabajos de 39 artistas y organizaciones locales que conspiran, deconstruyen y construyen propuestas de mundo en donde podamos vivir en armonía con la naturaleza y entre nosotres. 

La muestra pide contexto y acción, perreo y denuncia, a no ser un turista más: nos invita a entrar, conocer a los colectivos, entender qué está pasando y cómo apoyar. “De Aquí Nadie Nos Saca”, que empieza y culmina en la calle, estará abierta de miércoles a domingo de 2-8 pm, hasta el 5 de octubre. El ensayo curatorial, escrito por el historiador puertorriqueño, Jorell Meléndez-Badillo está disponible en red para profundizar en la puesta. ¡Léelo y visítanos!

Welcome to AgitArte’s monthly newsletter, El Boletín, where we share reports and updates on our cultural work, collaborations and issues that affect our communities. In August 2025 we made the shift from Mailchimp to Substack to better reflect our values as a movement organization, and to engage in new ways of connecting and building with our online community. 

AgitArte began as a youth popular education and theater group in Lynn, MA in 1997. Our name, AgitArte translated literally from Spanish means “to agitate yourself” and is a nod to the agitprop (agitational propaganda) movements in the Soviet Union, England and Europe in the 20th century. It’s in this spirit that we bring you our “digital pamphlet.” May the artwork, projects and writings herein inspire those who read toward cultural agitation for our collective liberation.
