Out of India and Into Africa 🦁🦒

In the last newsletter, we were in India enjoying one of my favourite desserts, kulfi. This month, I’ve been on a few adventures of my own in Africa.

To say that Africa has been a lifelong dream would be an understatement. As many of you know, I love animals — unless they are creepy crawlies 🪳🦗😱 — so going on safari with my family was something I’ll never forget.

We flew into Johannesburg, changed planes, and soon found ourselves landing at Skukuza Airport, where impalas grazed near the runway and monkeys watched from the trees. From there, it was a short, very bumpy ride to Kirkman’s Camp in the Greater Kruger region.

The days began before sunrise, bundled into open safari vehicles with “bush babies” — hot water bottles tucked under blankets — while the mist lifted over the bush. And then came the animals: rhinos moving through the scrub like prehistoric ghosts, lions resting after a kill, and a leopard with its impala stashed high in a tree, safely out of reach of the hyenas below.

What made it even more special was sharing it with family across three generations. There is something wonderfully surreal about watching your young nieces see their first lion, or sitting down to dinner only to have an elephant appear in the garden. Nothing reinforces a safety briefing quite like several tonnes of wildlife arriving beside the supper table.

South Africa was everything I had hoped for and more: beautiful, humbling, wild, and completely unforgettable.

More Adventures Ahead

From South Africa, our adventure continued to Zimbabwe and then on to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Somehow, things only became more extraordinary.

I’ll share more from those magical places in a future newsletter. Let’s just say Africa still had plenty of surprises in store for us…

What I’ve Been Reading

While travelling, I stumbled across a suitably dog-eared copy — pun very much intended — of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan.

Like many people, I first met Marley through the 2008 film, but reading the book reminded me why the story still works so well. It’s funny, chaotic, and full of the kind of dog behaviour that would test anyone’s patience, but underneath it all is a very tender story about family, growing older, and the animals who quietly become part of who we are.

Anyone who has loved a pet will know exactly why the ending hits so hard.

Ancient Secrets and Frozen Sweets

To celebrate Georgia’s journey into India, it was only right to turn this month’s spotlight onto something a little sweeter (and my Indian favourite🤤🤤): kulfi.

Kulfi is often described as traditional Indian ice cream, although that almost undersells it. It is richer, tastier, creamier, and slower to melt than the ice cream many of us grew up with. Classic flavours include pistachio, saffron, cardamom, almond, and mango — which already makes it sound like something Georgia Lee would discover in a palace kitchen while following a clue she definitely should not be following.

The origins of kulfi are often traced back to 16th-century Delhi during the Mughal era, when royal kitchens were transforming thickened, reduced milk into something far more luxurious. Flavoured with saffron and pistachios, the mixture was packed into metal cones and frozen — not with the help of modern freezers, of course, but through a remarkable feat of early refrigeration.

According to the Ain-i-Akbari, the detailed record of Emperor Akbar’s administration, the Mughals used transported ice from the Himalayas and saltpetre for refrigeration. Imagine the effort involved: ice carried across vast distances, precious spices gathered for the royal kitchens, and cooks using chemistry and craftsmanship to create a frozen dessert in the heat of India.

That is what I love about kulfi. It is not only delicious; it is history, science, luxury, and ingenuity all in one small frozen treat. Which, of course, makes it exactly the sort of thing Georgia would appreciate: part mystery, part engineering, part royal indulgence — and entirely worth risking a small adventure for.

Did Somebody Say New Book?

As many of my readers, friends, and family keep reminding me — okay, okay! — it has been a while since Georgia and her friends last set out on one of their adventures.

The truth is, there has been plenty happening in the background over the last couple of years: new ideas, old notes, half-formed plots, research rabbit holes, abandoned beginnings, and the slow wrangling of something that finally feels ready to step into the light.

So, dah-daaah… I’m very excited to share a tiny sneak peek of what is coming next.

The next book will mark an exciting new step: a spin-off from the Georgia Lee series.

Readers of The Indus Star will already know Dhara Shah: the bold investigative journalist who entered Georgia’s world in India, challenged her in more ways than one, and caused quite a bit of tension as Georgia’s rival for Buri’s affections.

Dhara was always too interesting to leave behind. So now she is getting a mystery of her own, set in Asia and filled with the same love of mystery, history, danger, and buried secrets that readers of the Georgia Lee books will recognise.

I cannot wait to share more soon!

New Adventures Ahead

And finally, my own next adventure is about to begin.

We are heading off to Africa with family, on a trip that has long been on my mother’s bucket list. That makes it especially meaningful, and we feel very lucky to be sharing the experience together.

I’ll share more once we are back — the landscapes, the wildlife, the stories, and perhaps a few moments that may one day find their way into a book. After all, in this family, a holiday is rarely just a holiday.

What I’m Listening To

This month, I’ve also been listening to a fascinating podcast episode called “Taiwan’s violent, messy, beautiful democracy” from If You’re Listening by ABC Australia.

As many of you know, Taiwan is very close to my heart, and I’m always drawn to stories that look beyond the headlines and try to understand the layers beneath: history, identity, politics, culture, and the complicated path that brought Taiwan to where it is today.

This episode explores Taiwan’s democracy in all its energy and chaos, including the moments when politics becomes rather more physical than most parliaments would probably recommend. It is lively, accessible, and a great listen for anyone interested in Taiwan, democracy, or the strange and fascinating ways history continues to shape the present.

There are also other excellent Taiwan-related episodes from If You’re Listening, so this is a great one to start with if you enjoy thoughtful, accessible explanations of Taiwan’s history, politics, and place in the world. If, like me, you enjoy disappearing down a research rabbit hole, they are well worth adding to your listening list.

Old Town, New Adventures

It’s been seven months since we moved back to Melbourne, and how quickly life has settled into a new rhythm! We arrived imagining a gentle re-entry: a few cosmetic touch-ups on our well-loved house, reconnecting with old friends, and slipping back into a life we hadn’t lived for more than twelve years. Melbourne, however, had other plans for us. What began as a “light renovation” quickly turned into a full-scale transformation, with every room painted, polished, repaired and revived — inside and out. The end result feels like an entirely new home… along with one very tired husband (worth it though — I adore both the house and the husband 😍).

The best part of coming back has been discovering that our friends are every bit as wonderful as we remembered — although quite a few now come with delightful miniature versions of themselves 😁🥰. It’s been such a joy to reconnect, settle back into Melbourne life, and begin dreaming about the adventures still to come… which reminds me…

Wilsons Prom and Square Poo?!🦫🐻💩

One of our favourite places in Australia — perhaps even the world — is a little slice of wilderness at the very bottom of Victoria called Wilsons Promontory National Park. Unlike so much of the country, it escaped the extensive logging and farming of the 19th and 20th centuries, meaning much of it still feels wonderfully untouched and wild.

But the true stars of “The Prom” are the local wombats who casually roam around the main campground at Tidal River as though they own the place (which, to be fair, they probably do). Completely unfazed by humans, they spend their evenings wandering from campsite to campsite in search of unattended snacks — something we discovered firsthand at 3 am when a mysterious rustling outside the tent turned out to be “Wally” the wombat enthusiastically demolishing a box of wholegrain pasta… uncooked! Not even some gentle encouragement could persuade him to leave, and he happily crunched his way through the entire box while we watched in disbelief. (There may also have been a small shriek involved — from the husband, not me 😉).

Fun fact: wombats really do make square poo. Apparently, the unusual shape stops it rolling away and helps mark their territory on rocks and logs (nature is amazing). Even more impressive is that they defend themselves by blocking the entrance to their burrows with their extremely solid backsides, making it almost impossible for predators — or even smoke from fires — to get past them. Honestly, what incredible little creatures 🥰.

Bush Fires and Close Escapes 🔥

And of course, no Australian summer would feel complete without the threat of bushfires, and this year was no exception. During a visit from our family from Perth, we experienced the full unpredictability of a Victorian summer — rugged up in freezing Melbourne weather one day, then sweltering through a 40+°C heatwave the next.

After several days of intense heat and strong winds, fires broke out in the beautiful Otways along Victoria’s South Coast — while we were driving right through the area. We were lucky to escape safely, but sadly more than 11,000 hectares of national park were destroyed, along with countless native animals and habitats. Local wildlife rescue groups were stretched to their limits caring for injured koalas, kangaroos and wallabies.

It was a sobering reminder of both the beauty and the raw power of this extraordinary country.

Did anyone catch the Netflix special Skyscraper LIVE — where Alex Honnold climbs Taipei 101 with no ropes like it’s a casual Tuesday?

Taipei 101 is 508m high 😳😬

It was genuinely nerve-wracking to watch Alex climb it — palms sweating, jaw clenched, whispering “please just come down now” at the screen like he could hear me. And then he gets to the top and the view is unreal — the whole city laid out like a map, hazy mountains in the distance — which somehow makes it worse because you realise how impossibly high he is. I kept thinking: what must his wife be going through watching that… because I could barely handle it from my couch. 😳

Anyway. That sent me on a Taiwan nostalgia trip (in my head).

It feels like a lifetime since my last visit. I’ve been hit with a wave of homesickness lately, and next thing I knew I was buried in old photos — dreaming of waterfalls, lush green mountains, and the perfect cup of bubble tea. Naturally, this led me (in spirit, at least) straight back to my happy place: the National Palace Museum in Taipei — 故宮博物院 (Gùgōng Bówùyuàn).

Every time I visit this museum I face the same dilemma: do I go hunting for something new… or do I beeline for the pieces I already love like an art-world creature of habit? There’s nothing like seeing them in person, but this month I’m bringing a few favourites to you — and the fascinating stories behind them.

Chicken Cups 🍵🐤

Among the museum's most treasured exhibits are the Chenghua Chicken Cups — exquisite Ming dynasty porcelain wine cups crafted in the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen during the reign of the Chenghua Emperor (1465–1487). Impossibly rare and coveted by emperors and collectors across the centuries, these tiny vessels carry an outsized legacy.

In 2017, one of very few surviving cups was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong to Chinese billionaire Liu Yiqian, who paid ~US$36 million for it. Liu charged the sale to his American Express card to collect a staggering amount of reward points. It is said that he had to swipe the card 24 times to complete the payment. Then, in a moment that made the art world collectively clutch its pearls, he was photographed drinking tea from the treasured artefact. 😳

The National Palace Museum in Taiwan holds 8 of these cups in its imperial porcelain collection.

Ivory Ball ⚽

This one always breaks my brain when I think of the craftsmanship involved. 🤯

This late Qing dynasty masterpiece contains 18 concentric ivory balls (see photos here) — all nested inside each other, all carved from a single piece of ivory, and all able to move freely. The outer surface is intricately carved with landscapes and pavilions; the inner layers with delicate openwork patterns. Tiny chains and screws hold the whole extraordinary thing together. Cantonese craftsmen created it, and the imperial court in Beijing had a name for work of this calibre — “the work of celestial beings.” Honestly? They weren’t wrong. 😄

Ceramic Pillow 🛌

I'll be honest — I wasn't expecting a porcelain pillow to stop me in my tracks, but here we are.

The Ding Ware Baby Pillow is shaped as a child lying contentedly on a mattress, dressed in a brocaded top with legs crossed behind, full of life and personality.

These pillows, often gifted to women at weddings, symbolized prosperity and family continuity; the child’s form was thought to influence dreams positively, aiding conception of male heirs essential for lineage in Confucian culture.​

I’m not sure how comfortable it is to sleep on, though 😬

Only three of these exist in the world — one in Beijing’s Palace Museum, and two in the Taiwan collection. Over a thousand years old, and still stopping people in their tracks.

Dragon Sutra 🐉

And now for something on the opposite end of the spectrum: pure imperial-level grandeur.

The Dragon Sutra, formally known as the Kangxi Kangyur (also called the Tibetan Dragon Canon), is one of the most jaw-dropping examples of imperial book arts held at the National Palace Museum. Kangyur literally means “the translated words of the Buddha,” and it’s a core Tibetan Buddhist canon of scriptures and monastic codes.

This particular edition was commissioned in 1667 by the Grand Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang for her grandson, the Kangxi Emperor — with more than 170 monks enlisted to transcribe the canon in gold ink, at a cost exceeding 400,000 silver taels. Completed in 1669, it’s housed in 108 ornately decorated cases, embroidered in silk and painted with dragon motifs — a breathtaking fusion of Manchu imperial patronage and Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Qing emperors venerated it as a source of spiritual protection and dynastic longevity. And in a modern echo of that belief, Taiwanese media reported that former President Chen Shui-bian viewed the Dragon Sutra privately before leaving office in 2008 — amid a popular idea that seeing it brings blessing and good fortune — though the museum has said it was treated as an official visit, and his personal motive is ultimately unknown.

Hello friends,

After months of travel through Asia — from chasing waterfalls in Taiwan and Indonesia, to hugging millennia-old cedar trees in magical Alishan, to getting lost in the artefact halls of Taiwan’s National Palace Museum — I’m finally back in Australia. And just in time for Christmas. 🎄

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know it’s been quite the journey. (And if not, you can catch up on past letters from Siem Reap, Battambang, and Vietnam — stories of temples, tuk-tuks, and copious amounts of delicious foods.)

It’s been a while since my last newsletter, mostly because I’ve been deep in renovation chaos — pulling apart our Melbourne house, dodging dust storms, and unexpectedly sharing the new space with a possum we’ve (affectionately?) named Lord Possumton.

Amid the dust and travel fatigue, I’ve been writing — working on the next novel, still chasing hidden histories and untold stories. But as the year winds down, what’s been sitting with me most is the question of home.

For a while now, we’ve technically been “homeless” — floating between places, projects, and continents. And yet, I’ve never felt more rooted in what matters. Home, I’m realising, isn’t always a fixed address. Sometimes it’s the way someone brews your tea without asking. The play of morning light spilling across the floorboards. Or the first bite of something that tastes exactly like memory — warm, familiar, and a little bit magic.

As we head into the holiday season this year, I hope you’re finding moments that feel like home — wherever you are.

What I’ve Been Watching

This month’s recommendation is Shark Whisperer — a beautiful, moving documentary that completely surprised me. It follows a remarkable woman whose deep connection with sharks goes far beyond fear. Her passion, patience, and advocacy for these misunderstood creatures brought tears to my eyes more than once.

She’s spent her life raising awareness about the dire state of our oceans — and especially the plight of sharks, who are far more endangered than most people realise.

Would I be brave enough to swim beside a great white like she does? Absolutely not. But I’m so glad there are people like her who do.

Next month, I’ll be diving into a few of my favourite artefacts from the National Palace Museum, and a little about my time with the headhunting tribes in the mountains of Taiwan.

Hello, fellow adventurers,

If you’re just tuning in, I’ve been sharing stories from my epic journey across Asia this year. You can catch up on the adventure so far in my earlier posts from Siem Reap and Battambang.

After an incredibly moving — almost spiritual — journey through the fields and temples of Cambodia, our next stop was Vietnam.

It’s hard to grasp that just fifty years ago, much of this country was scarred by war.

During what is known locally as “the American War,” U.S. and allied forces dropped more than 7.5 million tons of bombs on Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia — over twice the tonnage dropped by the Allies during all of World War II.

Yet today, Vietnam’s streets hum with life, colour, and an unstoppable sense of becoming.

While Vietnam is officially a socialist state, there’s a dynamic and evolving energy that feels uniquely Vietnamese — a rhythm shaped more by adaptability than by political ideology.

Oh, and food — lots and lots of glorious food 😋

🗺 Ho Chi Minh City

Stepping into Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), the energy is immediate—ambitious, chaotic, full of memory. But beneath its buzz lies a deeper story, one that stretches far beyond the fall of 1975.

Vietnam’s modern upheaval began in the mid-19th century, when French colonial rule reshaped its cities, systems, and identity. That grip held until 1954, when the Vietnamese victory at Điện Biên Phủ ended nearly a century of occupation.

But independence brought new divisions. The country split—communist North, U.S.-backed South—and peace quickly fractured. On June 11, 1963, a Buddhist monk named Thích Quảng Đức set himself alight in protest against the South’s religious repression. Malcolm Browne’s searing photograph of the moment stunned the world, eroding U.S. support for President Diệm’s regime and accelerating the path to war.

By April 30, 1975, the war reached its chaotic end. North Vietnamese forces rolled into Saigon, the South crumbled, and helicopters lifted the last Americans from the rooftops. The war was over, but what followed—re-education camps, isolation, rebuilding—was another long fight.

Today, Saigon thrums with life. Neon flickers on colonial facades, cafés overflow, scooters swarm. And curiously, one of France’s most lasting legacies isn’t political—it’s culinary. From rich coffee to the street-side baguette, traces of empire linger in the most unexpected, and delicious, places.

Bánh Mi or Bánh Xèo?

The French may have worn out their welcome in Vietnam, but their cuisine seems to have stuck around — and no one’s complaining about the baguettes. The humble Bánh Mi is available on every street corner and at all times of the day. The locals eat them for mostly for breakfast, and sometimes lunch or dinner — and at only $1 each, they are a bargain!

My other go-to dish is Bánh Xèo—literally “sizzling cake”—a crispy, golden rice flour pancake that crackles as it hits the pan. Stuffed with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, it’s wrapped in fresh herbs and leafy greens, then dunked in a sweet-savory dipping sauce. Utter bliss.

It’s a dish that shifts as you travel. In the South, Bánh Xèo is huge, audacious, spilling over the sides of the plate. Head north, and it gets daintier—smaller, crispier, but just as delicious, and arguably easier to tackle without a fork-lift.

Also: yes, I tried making one. It involved flames. Check out this video for my very enthusiastic attempt at the flambe!

Heading North

After a bone-rattling night on the so-called “luxury” overnight train, we arrived in Hội An—an ancient merchant town turned UNESCO World Heritage site, once renowned for its silk and spice trade. Lanterns still sway above yellow-washed shophouses, tailors still beckon from their doorways, and every corner hums with echoes of the past.

As we headed north, Vietnam began to feel more traditional, with Chinese influence surfacing in everything from architecture to outlook. Nowhere is that blend more striking than in the imperial city of Huế—a place where emperors once ruled and the ghosts of dynasties still drift through the humid air.

We kept going, all the way to the northernmost border—so far, in fact, we caught a glimpse of China. There, we met our guides and set off on a breathtaking three-day motorcycle adventure through the borderlands and the legendary Hà Giang Loop.

This was not the Vietnam from the movies, but a thriving, fiercely independent culture that seems to be making up for lost time. If the last 50 years have seen incredible progress, I can only wonder what the next 50 years will bring.

What I’m Reading

For anyone bewildered by today’s political chaos and wondering how things could possibly get so out of hand — take heart: history has seen it all before (and often, much worse).

This brilliant trilogy kept me company through much of my trip across Vietnam. In an age where politics feels more like theatre than governance, Robert Harris’s Cicero Trilogy — Imperium, Lustrum (Conspirata in the US), and Dictator — holds up a mirror to our own times with unnerving clarity.

It’s a hefty read, yes, but what a page-turner!

Hello, fellow adventurers,

I hope this finds you well—and well-fed. I’m still eating my way across Asia, but today, I want to take you west of the temples and crowds of Angkor to a quieter, more sobering place: Battambang.

This riverside town surprised me. I’d expected colonial charm and countryside calm. What I found instead were the echoes of a dark past—and a testament to the strength of those who survived it. This month, I’m sharing stories from Battambang: of shifting borders, deep resilience, and the unexpected power of rats, acrobats, and red ant sauce.

🗺 A City Once Claimed by Siam

Did you know Battambang and Siem Reap weren’t always part of Cambodia? For over a century, they were under Siamese rule—until 1907, when France negotiated their return during its colonial occupation. Borders drawn by colonial pens rarely settle quietly; to this day, parts of Cambodia’s western frontier remain tense.

Just weeks after we visited a disputed Angkorian temple next to the Thai border, news broke of a fatal skirmish between Cambodian and Thai forces near Chong Bok. Despite efforts to de-escalate, both nations have continued to reinforce their military presence, keeping tensions dangerously high along this unresolved frontier.

⛰ The Last Stronghold of the Khmer Rouge

Battambang was also one of the final holdouts of the Khmer Rouge. Long after Phnom Penh fell in 1979, remnants of the regime continued to operate from the jungles and rice fields here. It wasn’t until the late 1990s, after the fall of Anlong Veng and Pol Pot’s death, that the last fighters were finally driven into the mountains along the Thai border. The final Khmer Rouge holdouts surrendered in early 1999.

Today, the scars linger—in the countryside, in the stories of survivors, and in places like the Killing Caves.

🍽 Of Field Rats and Red Ants

History seeps into the cuisine here, too. One afternoon in a Battambang market, I found myself eye to eye with a skewered BBQ field rat—considered a delicacy, especially when caught after the rice harvest. Locals say it tastes like chicken, though I must confess: I was too chicken to find out 😬🐓

Then came the dipping sauce made from red ants, with a citrusy tang that reminded me of Sichuan pepper. Our tuk-tuk driver, a quiet man with a wry smile, told us this wasn’t just a quirky menu. During the Khmer Rouge era, these were survival staples.

Tree bark. Tarantulas. Ant nests. Anything.

Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime systematically starved, tortured, and executed approximately 1.5 to 2 million Cambodians—about 25% of the population at the time. Our driver spoke with unnerving calm of lost family—of parents, siblings, cousins who disappeared. We bumped along the dirt roads as he told us his story, and I realized it would stay with me longer than any temple.

🌱 From Ruin to Resilience

But Cambodia is more than its tragedies. In the same region where people once scavenged to survive, others now build for the future.

We visited REACH Siem Reap, a remarkable charity founded by Australian Emily Williamson. What began as a grassroots project has become a lifeline for families—offering education, food, and support to break cycles of poverty. We left humbled and inspired.

Nearby, we met some unlikely heroes: APOPO’s HeroRATs. These African giant pouched rats are trained to sniff out landmines—remnants of Cambodia’s decades-long conflict. With an estimated 4 to 6 million landmines and unexploded ordnance contaminating its countryside, Cambodia remains one of the most landmine-affected countries in the world. The toll has been devastating: over 40,000 amputees and one of the highest per capita rates of mine-related injuries globally.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of organizations like APOPO—and the sharp noses of their remarkable rodents—around 80% of the land initially surveyed has now been cleared. Still, vast areas remain dangerous.

One rat gave me a quick sniff, then scurried off in what I can only interpret as mild disgust. Apparently, I didn’t pass the smell test 😅

🎪 The Acrobat’s Escape

And then, the circus. No painted faces here—just raw talent and real stories.

Phare, the Cambodian Circus, is both a school and a stage, born in Battambang and rooted in survival. Many performers are former street kids or at-risk youth. Through theatre, music, and jaw-dropping acrobatics, they tell their country’s history with grace and grit.

Watching them felt like witnessing something sacred. Art as therapy. Movement as memory.

✍️ What Travel Teaches

If Angkor inspires awe, then Battambang evokes something deeper. Here, amid rice fields and shadowed caves, I found a different Cambodia—one shaped not just by empires and gods, but by ordinary people who refused to break.

These are the stories that move me most. They remind me why I travel, and why I write.

I’ve been deep in the heart of Cambodia, chasing the echoes of the ancient Khmer Empire—and what an unforgettable journey it’s been.

Into the Temples of Time

There’s nothing quite like your first visit to the Angkor Archaeological Park. Wandering through ancient stone corridors and crumbling towers, it’s easy to feel like you’ve stepped into another world—one where gods walked among kings, and history was carved (literally) into every wall.

Khmer kings began building before the 9th century, but the most famous of the empire’s legacy, Angkor Wat, wasn’t constructed until the 12th century by King Suryavarman II. Angkor Wat is often described as having been “rediscovered” by French explorers in the 19th century, but that’s a myth rooted in colonial storytelling. In truth, the temple was never lost—Cambodian monks and locals had cared for and worshipped there for centuries. While Henri Mouhot helped introduce Angkor to the West, his writings fed into the romantic idea of a forgotten jungle city, ignoring the fact that it was always known and deeply embedded in local culture.

As the largest religious monument in the world, Angkor Wat lives up to every bit of its legendary status. Covering a staggering 162 hectares, it is four times larger than Vatican City and nearly twice the size of the Forbidden City in Beijing. With its soaring towers, perfectly aligned causeways, and intricate bas-reliefs stretching for miles, Angkor Wat shows how deeply the Khmers understood mathematics, engineering, and architecture. It’s said that the entire complex was constructed in just over 30 years—an almost unbelievable feat when you see it in person.

But here’s the thing: the Khmer Empire is so much more than Angkor Wat. Most visitors only stay a few days and barely scratch the surface. If you stay longer, you’ll start to realise that there are hundreds, possibly thousands, of temples across the region—each with its own story.

Here are three of my personal favourites…

🌿 Beng Mealea

Imagine a temple lost to time—half-consumed by jungle, with towering trees growing through ancient stone and vines draped over fallen galleries. Few visitors make it out here, so you’re often alone, with only butterflies fluttering by and birds calling from the canopy. This is Beng Mealea. Largely unrestored, it offers a true Indiana Jones-style experience: overgrown, mysterious, and hauntingly beautiful. Believed to be a prototype for Angkor Wat, it was built in the same architectural style, making it one of Cambodia’s most atmospheric ruins.

🪷 Banteay Srei

Often called the “jewel of Khmer art,” this small temple is unique for its deep red sandstone and the exquisitely detailed carvings that cover every surface. Built in the 10th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, its name means "Citadel of the Women"—possibly because the carvings are so intricate that they were said to be done by the hands of women. Despite its modest size, it’s one of the most beautiful temples I’ve ever seen. Every inch is adorned with intricate floral patterns, devatas, and scenes from ancient myths—it’s more like sculpture than architecture. Because of its scale and craftsmanship, Banteay Srei feels intimate, almost delicate, and offers a completely different atmosphere—quiet, graceful, and rich with storytelling.

🛕Koh Ker

Tucked away in the remote jungles of northern Cambodia, Prasat Thom in Koh Ker is one of the most striking and unusual temple structures in the Khmer Empire. Unlike the towering spires of Angkor, Prasat Thom rises as a seven-tiered sandstone pyramid, distinctly reminiscent of the step pyramids of Mesoamerica—particularly those in Mexico, like Chichen Itza. The resemblance is uncanny and has sparked much speculation, though it’s more a case of architectural convergence than connection. Still, standing at the base of this towering ziggurat-style monument, overgrown and largely untouched by mass tourism, you can’t help but feel the same awe and mystery that clings to ancient ruins across the world.

It’s important to remember that for decades, Cambodia was closed off to archaeological work due to war, genocide, and political unrest. But now, with peace restored and technology like LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) transforming how we explore, scholars are making extraordinary discoveries—reshaping everything we thought we knew about the Khmer Empire.

We’re only beginning to understand the vastness and sophistication of this ancient civilisation, and it’s thrilling to witness a new chapter of history unfolding in real time.

What I’m Reading

Not my normal read, but a classic from the 1950s that I spotted in the hotel swap library. Dog-eared and well-read, my curiosity was piqued…

Graham Greene’s The Quiet American is a quietly haunting novel (also a movie) that explores the blurred lines between morality, politics, and love in 1950s Vietnam. Seen through the jaded eyes of Fowler, a British journalist, it captures the unease of a fading empire and the unsettling rise of American idealism.

A lot of people took this book to be a sharp critique of the kind of naive optimism that would later define much of America's involvement during the Vietnam War.

It really is a classic in all regards.

What I’m Watching

One of the many benefits of embracing a multi-cultural identity is that we get to celebrate so many more festivals throughout the year. And of course, the most important one in East Asian culture is the Lunar New Year.

This year we celebrate the Year of the Snake. In Chinese culture, the Snake is a symbol of wisdom, transformation, and rebirth, much like how real snakes shed their skin. Historically, the Snake has been linked to spirituality and power, often associated with deities and emperors. In Daoism, the Snake is seen as a mystical creature that embodies hidden knowledge and transformation. People born in the Year of the Snake are said to be wise, mysterious, intuitive, and strategic, often possessing a deep, analytical mind.

The origins of the Chinese zodiac date back to ancient China, with myths explaining how the twelve animals were chosen. According to legend, the Jade Emperor held a race to determine the zodiac order, and the Snake, known for its cunning, hid on the Horse’s hoof. Just before reaching the finish line, the Snake surprised the Horse and slithered ahead, securing its place as the sixth zodiac animal.

2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake, bringing a focus on growth, renewal, and wisdom—a time to embrace transformation and long-term planning. If you’re interested in what this year has in store for your Chinese zodiac sign, check out this article here.

To me, the Snake is a reminder that there’s always more than one path to success. The key is to play to your own strengths rather than getting caught up in the advantages others seem to have. We all have a unique superpower—it’s just a matter of recognising it and learning how to harness it.

For me, that superpower is dreaming up adventures and finding ways to bring them to life! As we step into the Year of the Snake, I hope you tap into your own inner strengths and share your gifts with the world.

Happy New Year! 🎉 I hope your 2025 is off to a fantastic start and that you had a joyful holiday season. I spent mine recharging with some incredible underwater adventures off the coast of Western Australia.

Busselton Jetty, located in Western Australia, is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, stretching an impressive 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) into the turquoise waters of Geographe Bay. Originally constructed in 1865, it served as a vital trade port for the region, facilitating the export of timber and other goods. Today, the jetty is a beloved tourist destination and marine haven, home to a kaleidoscope of marine life and stunning corals.

I also had the incredible opportunity to wrap up 2024 by swimming alongside a playful pod of dolphins! Watch the video here.

But now, let’s resurface to delve into another exciting chapter of our deep dive into The Indus Star. This month, we’re exploring the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram—a place that plays a pivotal role in the book’s climactic scenes.

🤠 Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple: A Treasure Trove of History and Mystery

This very special temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is a masterpiece of Dravidian and Kerala architecture and an enduring symbol of Kerala’s rich heritage. However, what truly sets it apart is its legendary status as one of the wealthiest temples in the world. Hidden within its ancient vaults are treasures estimated to be worth billions—gold coins, dazzling jewels, and artifacts amassed over centuries. If you’re interested, read more about the very scandalous discovery of its treasures here.

The temple’s story is intertwined with mystery and intrigue. Its sealed Vault B, unopened to this day, fuels countless myths. Is it protected by divine curses or ancient mechanisms? This tantalizing blend of fact and folklore became the perfect backdrop for the climax of The Indus Star.

As you’ve probably gathered from some of my social media posts, I’ve just returned from an inspiring and restorative trip to Italy. From stylish Milan, to enchanting Venice, to gritty Naples, to the breathtaking beauty of Sorrento and the Amalfi coast - each stop was truly mesmerising.

Travel has always played a crucial role in my creative process. And as we continue our exploration of The Indus Star, this month I want to share some insights into my writing processes. One of the most exciting aspects of writing stories like mine is the blend of thorough research and imagination. Before my fingers ever hit the keyboard, I spend countless hours at home researching historical events, legends, and archaeological mysteries. But the real magic happens when I step out of the books and into the world, traveling to the very places where the story unfolds.

🤠 An Epic Adventure Through India

For The Indus Star, my research trip to India was an unforgettable experience. From bustling cities to ancient wonders, each stop offered inspiration for the plot, as well as grounding the fictional elements in real history. Below are some of the most memorable places I visited.

Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta Caves, nestled in the Deccan Plateau of Maharashtra, house masterpieces of ancient Buddhist religious art. Dating back to the 2nd century BCE, these 30 rock-cut caves were used as retreats by Buddhist monks. Each cave is adorned with intricately painted frescoes and exquisite sculptures that capture the life of the Buddha and various Jataka tales, which illustrate his previous incarnations. The vivid colors and expressive details of these murals not only exemplify the artistic genius of their creators but also provide a window into the cultural and historical context of the time. The caves are now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for their contribution to the global heritage of mural painting.

Ellora Caves

While the Ajanta Caves are known for their paintings, the nearby Ellora Caves are renowned for their sculptures. Dating back to the fifth century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site includes temples dedicated to Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism, demonstrating the religious tolerance and harmony of the time. Of particular note within this complex is the Kailasa Temple, which is considered one of the most remarkable rock-cut temple in the world. It’s a monolith hewn from a single basalt stone, carved from the top down.

Sanchi

Sanchi, located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is famous for its ancient Buddhist stupas, monasteries, temples, and pillars dating back to the 3rd century BCE. The most notable among these is the Great Stupa, commissioned by Emperor Ashoka, one of India’s most celebrated rulers and a pivotal promoter of Buddhism. This stupa is an architectural and spiritual marvel, adorned with intricately carved toranas (gateways) that depict various scenes from the life of Buddha, illustrating his teachings and the journey towards enlightenment. Surrounding the main stupa are several smaller stupas and remains of what were once thriving monastic complexes, showcasing the rich history of Buddhist education and philosophy. Sanchi's unique blend of art, history, and spirituality attracts scholars, pilgrims, and tourists from around the world, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a poignant symbol of India’s Buddhist heritage.

Taj Mahal

The Qutb Complex, Delhi

The Qutb Complex in Delhi, India, is a spectacular array of historical structures that dates back to the 12th century, marking the beginning of Muslim rule in India. The site is dominated by the Qutb Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world, standing at an impressive 73 meters. Surrounding the minaret are various ruins, which include mosques, tombs, and architectural fragments that showcase the rich blend of Hindu and Islamic art styles. Among these is the Iron Pillar, renowned for its rust-resistant composition of metals.

Thiruvananthapuram

In the heart of Kerala, I was invited to an afternoon tea party with the princesses of the Travancore royal family. It was a surreal experience, filled with stories of royalty, tradition, and history, which all found their way into the narrative threads of The Indus Star.

It was also in this city that I visited the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, a place of untold riches and mystery, where The Indus Star reaches its thrilling climax.

We’ll delve into this fascinating temple next month, so stay tuned!

Welcome to this month’s deep dive into the world of The Indus Star, where fact and fiction intertwine. Following last month’s exploration of historical truths that inspired the story, today we’ll venture into the history of India’s most famous diamonds—some of which were stolen, lost, or changed hands under mysterious circumstances. These legendary gems, much like the fictional Indus Star, hold tales of power, conquest, and intrigue.

1. The Koh-i-Noor: The Mountain of Light

As discussed at length in The Indus Star, the Koh-i-Noor is perhaps the most infamous diamond of all. Now part of the British Crown Jewels, this 105.6-carat diamond has passed through the hands of many rulers, including Mughal emperors, Persian invaders, and British monarchs. Riddled with legends and controversies, it has inspired many films and novels, including one by Agatha Christie: The Secret of Chimneys.

2. The Hope Diamond

Originally mined from India’s famed Golconda region, the dark blue, 45.52-carat Hope Diamond is said to have been stolen from the eye of a statue of the Hindu goddess Sita. The diamond has changed hands numerous times, was stolen, smuggled, and also disappeared for some time. It eventually ended up in the Smithsonian Institution, where it is now on permanent exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

3. The Black Orlov Diamond

Also known as the Eye of Brahma Diamond, this is a black, 67.5-carat diamond. Once part of a much larger, uncut gem of 195 carats, it is believed to have been set in the eye of a statue of the Hindu god Brahma in Pondicherry, where it was stolen by a Jesuit cleric. Since then, misfortune seemed to follow whoever possessed the stone, including a diamond dealer who committed suicide by jumping from a skyscraper in New York City, and two Russian princesses, who also allegedly jumped to their deaths in the 1940s.

4. The Florentine Diamond

A stunning 137.27-carat yellow diamond, the Florentine Diamond is known by many names, including: the Tuscan, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, the Dufner Diamond, and the Austrian Diamond. Once one of the largest and most famous gemstones in the world, the stone’s origin is disputed. One version claims that it was acquired from King Vijayanagar by the Portuguese Governor of Goa.

The diamond eventually found its way to Europe, where it became part of the Medici family’s treasure in the 17th century. It was later owned by the Habsburg dynasty and worn by Austrian emperors. The Florentine Diamond’s fate took a dramatic turn after World War I, when it was stolen after the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. Since then, the diamond has mysteriously disappeared, and its whereabouts remain unknown.

5. The Great Mughal Diamond

The Great Mughal Diamond, once weighing a staggering 787 carats in its rough form, was one of the most magnificent gems ever discovered. Mined from the Golconda mines of India in the 17th century, it was presented to Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the visionary behind the Taj Mahal.

The diamond was cut by a Venetian lapidary, reducing it to around 280 carats. Some historians believe it was set into the Peacock Throne, a symbol of Mughal opulence. However, like many treasures of the Mughal Empire, the Great Mughal Diamond disappeared after the empire’s decline. Some speculate that it was recut again and may now be the famed Orlov Diamond (a separate diamond to the Black Orlov mentioned above), which is now encrusted into the Imperial Sceptre of Russian Empress Catherine the Great.

If you’re fascinated by the history of colonialism and how a corporate empire reshaped entire nations, The Anarchy by William Dalrymple is a must-read. This meticulously researched book chronicles the rise of the East India Company and its transformation from a trading enterprise into a powerful force that, by the 19th century, controlled vast parts of the subcontinent of India.

On a related note, I thought you’d also be interested to know that a 2,492-carat diamond was found in Botswana just last month! It’s said to be the second largest diamond ever found, and you can read more about it here.

Yes, the Indus Valley Civilisation, which thrived around 2500 BCE, is credited with creating one of the world’s first known toilets. Their advanced urban planning included sophisticated drainage systems and indoor flush toilets connected to an underground network of brick-lined sewers. These innovations highlight the civilisation's remarkable engineering skills and emphasis on hygiene, setting them apart as pioneers in public sanitation long before other ancient cultures.

🤔 Fact or Fiction 2: Was India as wealthy as described in The Indus Star, prior to colonisation?

Yes, India was incredibly wealthy before the arrival of colonial powers. The region was known for its prosperous trade in spices, textiles, and precious stones, including the fabled wealth of its empires like the Mughals. India’s cities were centers of culture, learning, and innovation, contributing significantly to the global economy.

This month, I had the incredible opportunity to explore the stunning islands of Fiji. Though Fiji is well-known today for its beautiful beaches and dive-friendly reefs, I discovered that there’s much more to its cultural traditions than I had realised.

🌴 Unveiling the History of the Cannibal Islands

Fiji's past is as fascinating as it is dark. Known historically as the "Cannibal Islands," Fiji was once infamous for its cannibalistic practices. While these traditions have long since vanished, the stories and historical remnants provide a unique glimpse into the island's past.

The practice was steeped in ritual, and deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs. Consuming the flesh of one’s enemies was thought to be a path to inheriting their knowledge, and a means of power, control, and revenge. It is said that victims were often tortured and dismembered while they were still alive, and special ceremonial forks were used to eat the flesh during ritualistic feasts.

Cannibalism ended in 1867 with the death of the Methodist missionary Thomas Baker, who was killed and eaten for touching a local chief’s head - a threat and offence in Fijian customs. Today, the soles of Baker’s boots, which were also cooked by the tribe, can be found at the Fiji Museum in Suva.

During my stay, visiting sites like the Naihehe Caves offered a profound connection to the island's history. Known as the "Cannibal Cave," it was a significant location for cannibalistic rituals, and served as a fortress and hiding place for Fijian tribes during times of conflict.

Crawling into the dark depths of the caves while listening to ghost stories, and imagining those who had been eaten at that very place was quite a creepy experience. Luckily for us, the village priest had performed a kava ceremony to ask the spirits for safe passage. I’m pretty sure the kava helped to calm the nerves too 😅

🍵 Experiencing Traditional Kava Ceremonies

Kava, a drink made from the ground root of the kava plant, plays a significant role in Fijian culture. The ceremony is a communal experience that fosters a sense of unity and respect. But what does it taste like, you ask? Hm… somewhat like dirt, or cold Chinese medicine, followed quickly by the very distinct numbing of the tongue, and a sense of relaxation and sleepiness. Many people in the West now take kava tablets to alleviate stress and aid sleep.

What I’m Reading:

I read the first book of the Pendergast series, Relic, many years ago, but it’s only now that I’ve picked up its sequel, The Reliquary. This thrilling second book plunges us back into the dark, mysterious depths of New York City's underworld. The story follows FBI Agent Pendergast and his allies as they unravel a series of gruesome murders connected to a hidden subterranean society. With its masterful blend of suspense, historical intrigue, and scientific mystery, The Reliquary keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. If you enjoy a good mystery with a touch of the macabre, both Relic and The Reliquary are definitely for you.

What I’m Watching:

If you, like me, are hooked on all-things-about-Taiwan, try Netflix's latest series, The Brothers Sun. Starring the magnificent Michelle Yeo, this is a funny, action-packed drama following the story of a Taiwanese triad who relocates to Los Angeles to protect his mother and brother from a rival crime boss. The series weaves high-stakes martial arts action with poignant Asian family dynamics, offering a fresh take on the crime genre. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoyed some the themes explored in The Imperial Alchemist.

🌊 My Latest Adventure: Komodo National Park, Indonesia

This month, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure in the stunning Komodo National Park, Indonesia. The trip was a blend of awe-inspiring marine life and up-close encounters with one of the world’s most fascinating creatures.

The underwater world of Komodo is simply magical. I had the incredible opportunity to dive with majestic manta rays gliding gracefully through the water and encounter sea turtles swimming peacefully among the coral reefs. It was a serene yet exhilarating experience that truly highlighted the beauty and diversity of marine life. I also completed my advanced PADI certificate while I was there.

Manta rays are the largest species of ray in the world, with wingspans reaching up to 29 feet and weights exceeding 5,300 pounds. Despite their size, manta rays are gentle creatures. They are filter feeders, consuming large quantities of plankton by swimming with their mouths open to collect food. They are also known for their intelligence and exhibit complex behaviors such as coordinated feeding and social interactions. They have one of the largest brain-to-body size ratios of all fish.

On land, the adventure continued as I tracked down the legendary Komodo dragons. These incredible reptiles are as formidable as they are fascinating, and seeing them in their natural habitat was a moment I’ll never forget.

Here are some fascinating facts about these incredible creatures:

• Largest Living Lizard: Komodo dragons are the largest living lizards, growing up to 10 feet in length and weighing over 150 pounds.

• Venomous Bite: They have a venomous bite that can incapacitate their prey with toxins that lower blood pressure, cause massive bleeding, and prevent clotting.

• Keen Hunters: Komodo dragons are apex predators, using their keen sense of smell to locate carcasses from miles away. They can eat up to 80% of their body weight in one sitting!

• Unique Reproduction: Female Komodo dragons can reproduce through parthenogenesis, a process where they lay eggs without fertilization by a male.

• Ancient Lineage: These creatures have roamed the earth for millions of years, and their existence today offers a glimpse into a prehistoric past.
