There’s a genre of content I now skip on sight: the 4,000-word essay mourning the death of writing at the hands of AI. You know the one. Elegant, anguished, widely shared — and almost always written by someone who has never actually used the thing they’re eulogizing.

That’s the tell. Read enough of them and you notice they never describe the tools accurately, because the author hasn’t opened them. They’re not reporting; they’re performing. Doom is a content strategy. Despair gets shares, certainty gets applause, and “I tried it, it’s a useful, limited tool with sharp edges” gets crickets — because nuance doesn’t trend.

I’m not saying there’s nothing to worry about. Training data, consent, a flood of low-effort junk, platforms making the rules up as they go — those are real, and they deserve serious attention. But the doom-essayists aren’t doing serious attention. They’re doing theater, and the theater actively crowds out the real conversation, because it treats every author who touches the tools as a co-conspirator in the apocalypse.

Here’s what that crowd keeps missing: writing has survived every technology that was supposed to kill it. The printing press was going to ruin memory. Paperbacks were going to cheapen literature. Word processors, self-publishing, ebooks — each arrived with its own funeral, and writing kept going, because what readers actually want is a human with something to say. That part didn’t change. It can’t be automated, and nobody’s even trying to.

So when the next death-of-writing essay rolls through your feed, you have my blessing to scroll past. The people writing them aren’t in the arena. They’re in the bleachers, narrating a game they refuse to play.

You? Go play. Make the thing. The work is the answer to the panic.

Not because they decided AI was not right for their event. They are allowed to create whatever rules they want.

Their event. Their rules.

I unfollowed them because they publicly announced that they “do not support AI”—while at least one person involved in running the event has taken one of my AI classes and personally talked to me about using it.

And no, I am not naming the event or the people involved.

This is not about sending an angry mob after someone.

It is about the hypocrisy that has become ridiculously common in the author industry.

YOUR PUBLIC MORALS SHOULD MATCH YOUR PRIVATE BEHAVIOR

People are standing on social media declaring:

“We don’t support AI.”

“AI is unethical.”

“Real authors don’t use AI.”

“We stand with human creators.”

Then, behind the scenes, they are quietly using it.

They are taking classes.

They are asking questions.

They are using it to brainstorm.

They are putting their blurbs into ChatGPT.

They are using AI features built into Canva, Grammarly, Adobe, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and nearly every other platform involved in their business.

But publicly?

They climb onto their moral high horse and announce that they do not support AI.

Bullshit.

If you use AI privately while condemning it publicly, you are not taking an ethical stand.

You are protecting your image.

Those are not the same thing.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT HAVING BOUNDARIES

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having rules for how AI should be used.

You can say:

“We allow AI for brainstorming but not final artwork.”

“We allow editing tools but require the author to write the manuscript.”

“We do not accept fully AI-generated books.”

“We require disclosure when generative AI was used in the submitted work.”

“We are still evaluating the technology and establishing our policy.”

Those are boundaries.

Those are specific positions people can understand and discuss.

“I don’t support AI” is not a meaningful policy.

What does that actually mean?

Does your event use Canva?

Does anyone involved use Grammarly?

Did you use an AI-assisted email platform to promote the event?

Are you advertising through Meta or Google systems that use AI to select audiences, optimize delivery, and determine who sees the ads?

Did an AI-powered spam filter keep junk messages out of your inbox?

Did your website platform use AI features somewhere in its system?

Did anyone use ChatGPT to clean up an email, generate social-media ideas, summarize information, or troubleshoot a technical problem?

Because if the answer to any of those questions is yes, then you support AI when it is convenient for you.

You just do not want to admit it publicly.

SAY WHAT YOU ACTUALLY MEAN

Most people who say they “don’t support AI” do not mean they reject every use of artificial intelligence.

They usually mean they dislike one or two specific applications.

Maybe they oppose AI-generated cover art.

Maybe they do not want fully generated manuscripts.

Maybe they are concerned about training data.

Maybe they fear readers will assume they used AI to create work they wrote themselves.

Fine.

Say that.

Have the courage to state your actual position instead of wrapping yourself in a broad moral declaration that you do not consistently follow.

Nuance is not weakness.

Nuance is honesty.

But nuance does not perform as well on social media.

“I have concerns about certain generative-AI applications, although I use other AI tools in my business” does not earn as many applause emojis.

“We don’t support AI” is cleaner.

It gives people a villain.

It lets everyone congratulate one another for being on the correct side.

And apparently, it still leaves plenty of room to use the technology privately.

YOU DO NOT GET MORALITY POINTS FOR HIDING YOUR USE

That is the part that pisses me off.

I am public about what I use.

I teach it.

I test it.

I discuss what works, what does not work, where human judgment is required, and what authors need to check.

I am not pretending AI is flawless.

I am not telling anyone they must use it.

I am not hiding my involvement so I can collect praise from one group while quietly benefiting from the tools that group condemns.

You can disagree with me.

You can decide AI is not right for your books.

You can choose not to attend my classes, join my communities, or follow my content.

What you cannot do—at least not without being a hypocrite—is learn from me privately, discuss your own AI use with me, and then publicly present yourself as someone who does not support AI.

Not without admitting the distinction.

Not without explaining what uses you support and which ones you oppose.

Not while enjoying the social credibility of being “anti-AI” and the business benefits of using it behind closed doors.

THIS BEHAVIOR HURTS HONEST AUTHORS

Performative morality creates an environment where authors feel pressured to lie.

They use AI to organize their notes but are scared to admit it.

They ask it to help troubleshoot a plot problem but worry someone will declare their entire book fake.

They use accessibility tools, transcription, editing assistance, or marketing support and wonder whether an event will suddenly decide they are not “real” authors.

Meanwhile, some of the loudest people condemning them are quietly experimenting with the same technology.

That does not protect authors.

It rewards dishonesty.

It creates a competition to see who can appear the purest rather than encouraging a useful conversation about responsible use.

And it pushes AI education underground, where people are less likely to learn how to use the tools carefully, legally, and ethically.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO CHANGE YOUR MIND

Maybe someone took my class, explored the tools, and later decided they did not want to use them.

That can happen.

People are allowed to learn, reconsider, and change their position.

But if that is what happened, say it.

“I explored AI and decided it was not appropriate for my work.”

That is honest.

“I use AI for administrative tasks but not creative production.”

Also honest.

“I previously used these tools, but my position has changed.”

Perfectly reasonable.

Pretending you have always occupied the moral high ground while erasing the private behavior that complicates your public position?

No.

That is branding.

Not integrity.

MAKE WHATEVER POLICY YOU WANT—BUT OWN IT

If you run an author event, you have every right to establish participation rules.

Ban AI-generated covers.

Ban AI-assisted manuscripts.

Ban every book created on a Tuesday if that makes you happy.

But define your terms.

Apply the rules consistently.

And make sure the people presenting those rules publicly are following them privately.

Otherwise, stop lecturing the rest of us about ethics.

If your public position is “AI is bad,” but your private position is “AI is useful when nobody is watching,” you do not have stronger morals.

You have better PR.

Hypocrisy is real.

And unfollowing it is free.

Here’s why it dies: people treat every issue like an essay. They sit down to “write something valuable,” stare at the blank screen, feel like a fraud, and close the laptop. Do that twice and the newsletter is dead. The fix isn’t more discipline. It’s a template, so you never face a blank page again.

Here’s the 20-minute structure I use — five blocks, same every time:

1. A hello (2–3 sentences). What’s going on with you. Human, not a press release. This is the part readers actually like.

2. One thing worth their time. A book rec, a show, a tip, a behind-the-scenes — yours or someone else’s. Be a curator, not just a salesperson.

3. What you’re working on. One short paragraph of progress. Readers love a window into the making. “Book three is being difficult” beats silence every time.

4. One clear thing to do (optional). Grab the new release, reply with a rec, leave a review. One ask, not five. Plenty of issues have no ask at all — that’s fine, it keeps the asks from feeling like the only reason you ever show up.

5. A sign-off that sounds like you. Done.

Fill the five blocks, hit send. Twenty minutes. The goal is not to write the best newsletter anyone’s ever read — it’s to show up consistently so readers don’t forget you exist. A decent email that actually sends beats a brilliant one that never leaves drafts.

And the AI assist, for the record: keep a running note through the month — a good line, a reader question, a milestone — then hand the pile to a model to rough out the five blocks in your voice, and punch it up. Twenty minutes becomes ten. The point was never the labor; it was the consistency.

Your move this week: write one using the five blocks, and time yourself. Next week, the last piece — what to do when your list goes quiet.

Yeah, I said it out loud.

And I say some version of this during about 90% of the coffee chats I host.

“My reel only got 150 views.”

Only.

One hundred and fifty people.

Many authors look at that number, pout, and decide:

“That sucks.”

“I’m stuck.”

“The algorithm hates me.”

“Social media doesn’t work.”

“I guess I need to start over.”

No. You need to stop looking at normal, useful progress as though it is failure simply because someone else posted a screenshot with a bigger number.

IMAGINE THOSE 150 PEOPLE IN FRONT OF YOU

Imagine walking into a room and finding 150 people waiting for you.

There are 150 chairs.

Every chair is filled.

Every person is there while you hold up your book, talk about your characters, explain what the story is about, and give them a reason to read it.

Would you look at that room and say:

“Well, this is pathetic. I thought there would be 10,000 people here.”

Of course you wouldn’t.

You would probably be nervous as hell.

You might feel overwhelmed.

You would understand that 150 people is an actual audience.

But put those same people behind a number on a screen and suddenly they don’t count.

Why?

Because social media has completely screwed up our understanding of scale.

THOSE WERE 150 OPPORTUNITIES

To be technically accurate, a view does not guarantee that someone watched every second, memorized your book title, or immediately rushed to Amazon.

But your content was put in front of people.

Your book existed in their world for a moment when it had not existed there before.

That matters.

Maybe one person clicked your profile.

Maybe three people remembered your cover.

Maybe someone followed you but is not ready to buy yet.

Maybe a reader saw the reel, kept scrolling, and then recognized your book when it appeared again next week.

Maybe someone needs to encounter you five, ten, or fifteen times before finally clicking.

That is how marketing often works.

Not every interaction produces an immediate sale.

Marketing builds recognition.

Recognition builds familiarity.

Familiarity builds trust.

Trust eventually makes buying feel easier.

You cannot build that chain if you keep quitting every time a post fails to go viral.

HIGHER NUMBERS ARE BETTER. DUH.

Obviously, I would rather have 15,000 views than 150.

More reach gives us more opportunities for clicks, followers, subscribers, and sales.

I am not going to pretend numbers never matter.

They matter.

But a smaller number is not the same thing as nothing.

That is the distinction people keep missing.

A post with 150 views is not necessarily a failed post.

It may be one small brick in the platform you are building.

One reel introduces you.

Another demonstrates your personality.

Another explains the promise of your book.

Another reaches the person who has now seen you four times and finally thinks:

“Fine. Let me go look at this book.”

The problem is that authors want the fourth interaction’s sale without creating the first three interactions.

“VIRAL” IS NOT A MARKETING STRATEGY

A lot of viral content was not carefully engineered by a marketing genius with a mystical understanding of the algorithm.

Sometimes it was an accident.

Someone posted the right thing at the right moment, the algorithm picked it up, people began sharing it, and it took off.

Good for them.

But you cannot build a dependable business plan around:

“I hope the internet randomly loses its mind over this.”

Even when something goes viral, that does not automatically mean it sold anything.

A reel can receive a million views from people who will never buy the book.

A controversial post can generate thousands of comments from people arguing with one another while producing almost no meaningful business.

A funny video can attract an enormous audience that has absolutely no interest in the product being sold.

Big numbers look impressive in a screenshot.

Relevant attention is what actually matters.

I would rather reach 150 romance readers who enjoy exactly what I write than 15,000 random people who will never open one of my books.

Virality can be wonderful.

Relevance is useful.

Those are not always the same thing.

STOP BORROWING SOMEONE ELSE’S SCOREBOARD

You do not know what happened behind someone else’s viral screenshot.

You do not know whether the views came from their ideal audience.

You do not know whether they paid to boost the post.

You do not know whether it generated sales.

You do not know whether they have been posting consistently for six years.

You do not know whether the next twenty things they posted completely flopped.

You are comparing the ordinary middle of your process to the most impressive number someone else chose to show you.

Then you are using that comparison as permission to stop.

That is bullshit.

Your marketing should be measured against what you are trying to accomplish.

Did more people discover the book?

Did someone visit your profile?

Did you gain a follower?

Did a reader join your email list?

Did someone click through to the sales page?

Did you learn which hook made people stop scrolling?

Did you create something you can reuse, improve, or turn into another piece of content?

Those numbers tell you far more than whether the internet declared you viral for twelve minutes.

STOP DOING PIDDLY SHIT

And yes, I mean that exactly as written.

Stop posting once, staring at the number, declaring the entire platform useless, and wandering away to try another tactic.

Stop rebuilding your strategy every three days.

Stop chasing every new trend because someone showed you one enormous result without explaining the hundred ordinary posts that came before it.

Stop treating marketing like a slot machine.

One reel is not a campaign.

Three posts are not consistency.

A week is not enough time to determine whether your entire strategy works.

Your job is to keep putting the right books in front of the right people.

Again.

And again.

And again.

That does not mean repeating something that clearly is not working forever. Look at the results. Adjust the hook. Improve the message. Test the image. Make the call to action clearer.

But do not confuse “this needs improvement” with “this did nothing.”

YOUR 150 VIEWS ARE BUILDING SOMETHING

Those 150 views may not make you famous today.

They may not trigger an avalanche of sales.

They may not earn you an exciting screenshot to post in an author group.

But those views can still build recognition.

They can still teach you what connects.

They can still introduce a reader to your book.

And if you reach 150 people today, another 150 tomorrow, and another 150 after that, you have created hundreds of opportunities that would not have existed if you sat around waiting to become viral.

Small numbers compound when you keep working.

Zero does not.

So the next time your reel gets 150 views, stop saying:

“Only 150 people saw it.”

Say:

“I stood in front of a room filled with 150 people and told them about my book.”

Then create the next damn post.

I HAVE NOT USED AMAZON’S VIRTUAL VOICE.

I cannot tell you whether it sounds amazing, terrible, robotic, or perfectly acceptable. I cannot review something I have not personally used.

This is not a review of Virtual Voice.

This is a discussion about why independent authors are considering AI narration in the first place—and why screaming “AI slop” does absolutely nothing to address the financial reality behind that decision.

HUMAN-NARRATED AUDIOBOOKS ARE EXPENSIVE

Professional audiobook production is commonly priced per finished hour.

And “finished hour” does not mean someone reads for sixty minutes, uploads the recording, and calls it done.

There is narration, editing, proofing, corrections, mastering, formatting, and quality control.

Current industry estimates generally place professional production around $200–$400 per finished hour, sometimes substantially higher. A 55,000-word book may produce approximately six finished hours of audio, putting production around $1,200–$2,400. A longer novel can easily cost $3,000–$5,000 or more.

That is for ONE book.

Have a five-book series?

Start multiplying.

Money is only one part of the investment. A single finished hour can require several actual working hours once recording, editing, mastering, proofing, and corrections are included.

Then, after spending thousands of dollars and dozens of hours producing the audiobook, do you know what happens?

You still have to market the damn thing.

The narrator does not magically deliver an audience with the completed files. Audible does not lovingly place every independent author’s audiobook in front of thousands of perfectly matched listeners.

We still need emails, social media, samples, videos, advertising, launch plans, descriptions, graphics, keywords, and an audience willing to listen.

The audiobook is the product.

It is not the marketing plan.

LET’S TALK ABOUT MY ACTUAL NUMBERS

I release audiobooks from one of my pen names on YouTube.

That channel has more than 60,000 subscribers.

It is not currently monetized. That is a long story for another day. But when it was monetized, it generally earned around $700–$1,000 per month.

That sounds wonderful until we discuss what it took to generate that revenue.

I was spending approximately $300–$500 every month producing the better audiobooks, plus my time.

There was production, checking files, correcting problems, creating images, preparing videos, uploading, writing descriptions, managing the channel, and continuously giving the audience new content.

And—oh, yeah—I still had to write engaging books people actually WANTED to listen to.

AI did not magically make readers care about boring stories.

It did not guarantee that someone would click the video, keep listening, subscribe to the channel, or come back for the next book.

The audience did not grow to more than 60,000 subscribers simply because I uploaded audio.

The books had to hold their attention.

I had to create stories people wanted to start, finish, and hear more of. Then I had to package those stories, publish them consistently, and market them well enough for people to discover them.

That is what gets erased whenever someone says AI makes everything “cheap and easy.”

Cheaper is not free.

Faster is not effortless.

Production is not storytelling.

And having the ability to make an audiobook does not automatically create an audience for it.

Even with more than 60,000 subscribers, I was not sitting around getting rich from AI audiobooks.

Revenue is not profit.

I had an audience and a system capable of generating income, but the system still required money, time, engaging books, consistent releases, and continuous marketing.

NOW LET’S DISCUSS AUDIBLE’S NEW ROYALTY SYSTEM

Because apparently audiobook production was not complicated enough.

Audible is transitioning rights holders to a new royalty model during 2026, with its legacy model scheduled to be discontinued at the end of the year. According to Audible, creators will need to enroll their titles in the new model for continued distribution.

Audible presents this as an opportunity for creators to earn from more kinds of listening, including titles consumed through Audible Plus.

That sounds lovely.

Here is the part that deserves considerably more attention.

According to Audible’s published explanation, it takes a member’s plan value—whether Plus or Premium Plus—adds the value of additional credits used, and then allocates that value among the titles the member listened to during the month. The author’s contractual royalty rate is then applied to the amount allocated to their title.

Let’s use completely hypothetical numbers because the math makes the problem easier to see.

Assume Audible assigns a member’s monthly plan a value of $15.

That member also uses an additional credit valued at $12.

That creates $27 in total member value for the month.

The member uses that credit to select my audiobook. But during the same month, they also listen to three books from the Audible Plus catalog.

Under the new system, Audible does not simply look at that $12 credit and calculate my royalty from it as an isolated transaction. The combined $27 is allocated among the qualifying titles the member consumed, based on Audible’s applicable calculations.

Let’s pretend Audible’s calculation allocates 50% of that value to my book.

$27 × 50% = $13.50 in member value allocated to my audiobook.

If my contractual royalty rate were 50%, my royalty would be $6.75.

But what if my book receives only 30% of that member value?

$27 × 30% = $8.10.

$8.10 × 50% royalty rate = $4.05.

Or what if my audiobook receives only 20%?

$27 × 20% = $5.40.

$5.40 × 50% royalty rate = $2.70.

These are simplified hypothetical numbers—not a prediction of what Audible will pay for any particular book. The actual allocation depends on Audible’s rules, the titles consumed, and how it weights that activity.

But that is exactly my problem with the system.

The customer deliberately used a credit to select a specific audiobook. Yet the author’s payment is no longer necessarily understandable as:

Credit used on my book = a clearly defined value attached to my book.

Instead, it becomes:

Plan value + credit value + everything else the member listened to + Audible’s allocation formula × my royalty rate = whatever my statement eventually says I earned.

Clear as mud.

Yes, the new system means authors whose books are consumed through Audible Plus may receive compensation for that listening.

That is the positive side.

The other side is that the value generated by someone who intentionally selected my audiobook can potentially be allocated across other content they consumed that month.

Audible calls that a new royalty model.

I call it a stupid system that makes it considerably harder for an author to know what an individual “sale” is actually worth.

AND THOSE NUMBERS MATTER

If producing my audiobook costs $3,000 and I earn $6 per listener, I need approximately 500 paid listens merely to recover production costs.

If the effective royalty ends up closer to $4, I need 750.

If it is $2.70, I need more than 1,100.

That is before advertising expenses.

Before cover design.

Before production corrections.

Before the cost of building an email list.

Before the hours spent promoting it.

And before paying myself anything for writing the book people are supposedly listening to.

Audible says the new model will send a greater percentage of its total revenue to creators.

Wonderful.

But “more money to creators overall” does not necessarily mean more money to every creator.

Those are not the same promise.

THIS IS WHY AUTHORS ARE EXPLORING AI NARRATION

It is not necessarily because they hate narrators.

It is not necessarily because they do not value performance.

It is not necessarily because they are trying to flood the world with garbage.

Sometimes the author simply cannot risk several thousand dollars on an audiobook that may never recover its production costs—especially when the largest marketplace can change how the resulting royalties are calculated.

Authors are running businesses.

Businesses examine costs, production time, audience size, marketing requirements, platform risk, and potential return.

If AI narration makes audio financially possible for an author who otherwise could not afford it, I understand why that author would explore it.

That does not mean every AI-narrated audiobook will be good.

Plenty will be terrible.

You know what else can be terrible?

Human narration.

Human editing.

Human-written books.

Human-designed covers.

Humans are extraordinarily capable of producing crap without any assistance from artificial intelligence.

The appropriate standard should be the quality of the finished product.

Was the narration method disclosed appropriately?

Was the voice legally and ethically obtained?

Was the audio actually proofed?

Are the pronunciations correct?

Is the pacing listenable?

Is the underlying book engaging enough to hold someone’s attention?

Does the customer receive a product worth the price?

Those are legitimate questions.

“Was AI involved?” is not a complete quality-control system.

AUTHORS DO NOT OWE THE MARKET AN UNPROFITABLE BUSINESS MODEL

You do not get to demand that independent authors spend thousands of dollars on human narration, insist their audiobooks remain inexpensive, expect them to handle all the marketing, and then shrug when the platform changes how their royalties are divided.

You definitely do not get to call them lazy for looking for a production method they can realistically afford.

I support human narrators.

I support excellent audio production.

I also support authors looking at the actual numbers before dropping thousands of dollars because someone on the internet declared that was the only morally acceptable way to create an audiobook.

AI audiobooks are not automatically good.

They are not automatically bad.

The technology may help produce the audio. It cannot force people to care about the story.

Authors still need to write books people want to listen to. We still need to earn their attention, keep it for hours, convince them to try another book, and market the work so they know it exists.

If the industry wants more human-narrated audiobooks, it needs to create an economic system in which producing them makes sense.

Until then, stop blaming authors for doing the math.

There’s a whole corner of the AI-author world built on one promise: volume. Publish 100 books a month. Spin up twelve pen names by Friday. Flood every category until something sticks. The pitch never changes — the machine made you a printing press, so print.

It’s a lie, and it’s an expensive one.

Here’s what actually happens to the people chasing it. They generate a mountain of thin, interchangeable books, dump them on the store, and watch them do nothing — because readers can smell vending-machine fiction now, and the algorithms are getting better at burying it. Then the platform flags the account for spammy volume, and a year of “output” vanishes in one suspension email. The gold-rushers aren’t building a catalog. They’re building a liability.

The math that crowd never does: 100 throwaway books that each sell zero is still zero. One good book readers finish and recommend outsells a hundred that get returned in a chapter. Volume only compounds if the thing you’re making is worth coming back for. Otherwise you’ve just automated failure and made it faster.

And the quiet cost is worse than the wasted time. Every flood of disposable books makes the whole category harder for everyone doing it right — more noise for readers to wade through, more suspicion on every new release, more fuel for the witch-hunt crowd. The gold-rushers are a big part of why the torches exist.

AI is genuinely great at making you faster. That is not the same as a reason to make more of nothing. Absolutely not.

If the product is bad, pay less.

If it is inaccurate, generic, poorly designed, legally questionable, or unusable, do not buy it at all.

But if the product does what it promised—if it solves your problem, saves you time, entertains you, teaches you something, or helps you make money—you do not automatically deserve a discount because AI was involved in creating it.

You are buying the result.

You are not purchasing a measured quantity of human suffering.

Price has never been a timesheet

This is the same confused argument authors make when they believe a book deserves more sales because it took ten years to write.

The customer is not reimbursing you for your labor.

The customer is paying for the value of the finished product.

A reader does not pay more for a novel because the author rewrote it seventeen times.

A business owner does not pay more for a logo because the designer stared at the screen for forty hours.

A customer does not pay less for accounting services because the accountant used software instead of calculating everything by hand.

Nobody walks into a bakery and demands a discount because the baker used an electric mixer.

Nobody tells a photographer the images should be cheaper because the camera automatically handled exposure.

Nobody asks a developer to deduct the value of every library, framework, template, and reusable piece of code from the invoice.

But the moment AI enters the process, people suddenly want a forensic labor audit.

How many words did the human type?

How many hours did this take?

Which ideas appeared before the tool was opened?

How much of the finished product contains enough visible struggle to justify the price?

That is not how pricing works.

It has never been how pricing works.

I used to charge more because I was faster

Before AI, I built systems for businesses.

I could often build in one day what would take someone else a week—or longer.

Why?

Because I was an expert at it.

I already knew which questions to ask.

I knew where projects usually broke.

I knew which features sounded useful but would create problems later.

I knew how the pieces needed to connect, what could be automated, and what the client would eventually need even if they had not thought to ask for it yet.

That expertise made me faster.

It did not make my work less valuable.

In fact, I charged more.

My clients were not paying for one day of labor. They were paying for the years of experience that allowed me to produce the correct system in one day.

They were paying to avoid a week—or several weeks—of mistakes, dead ends, rework, and frustration.

They were paying to get the result faster.

If we priced work according to how long it took, the least experienced person would earn the most money.

The beginner who needs two weeks would charge more than the expert who finishes in a day.

That would be ridiculous.

Charging less because I was fast would have punished me for becoming good at my job.

AI does not erase expertise

AI gives an experienced person another way to apply her judgment faster.

A beginner with AI can create a mess at record speed.

The tool may produce something quickly, but the beginner may not know whether it works, whether it is secure, whether it solves the right problem, or whether it will collapse the first time a real customer uses it.

An expert knows what good looks like.

An expert knows what to reject.

An expert knows what the AI forgot to consider.

An expert knows when the result is finished—and when it is merely polished enough to fool someone who does not know better.

The value was never the number of hours I spent clicking buttons.

The value was knowing which buttons needed to be clicked, what needed to be built, and how to make the system actually work.

AI may help me do that faster now.

That does not make my expertise cheaper.

It makes my expertise more powerful.

Speed is evidence of expertise—not a reason for a discount.

Efficiency is not theft

Businesses invest in tools because tools make work faster, better, more consistent, or more profitable.

That is the entire point.

If I spend years developing my judgment, building systems, testing processes, creating templates, learning my market, and figuring out how to produce a strong result faster, that efficiency belongs to my business.

It does not create an automatic discount for the customer.

The reward for building a better system is not a customer-imposed pay cut.

Cheap to produce does not mean worthless

Most digital products already cost almost nothing to reproduce.

An ebook does not cost the author another five dollars every time someone downloads it.

A course does not have to be filmed again for each student.

A template can be sold repeatedly.

Software can serve another user without being rebuilt from scratch.

We accepted value-based pricing for digital products years ago.

You are not paying for the physical cost of creating your individual copy.

You are paying for access to the result.

That value might include the usefulness of the information, the quality of the finished product, the creator’s judgment, the time it saves you, the money it helps you make, the entertainment it provides, the convenience of having the problem solved, and the support or license surrounding it.

AI does not erase those things.

Sometimes it helps create them faster.

That is not the same as making them valueless.

Nobody owes you their cost savings

When a company installs better manufacturing equipment, customers do not automatically receive the entire savings.

When a shipping company optimizes its routes, it does not divide the fuel savings among everyone waiting for a package.

When a software company automates part of customer support, it does not send every subscriber a check.

Businesses improve their margins all the time.

Sometimes competition eventually lowers prices.

Sometimes the business keeps the additional profit.

Sometimes it reinvests the money into better products, faster delivery, more support, or new development.

That is a business decision.

It is not a moral debt owed to the customer.

Yet people look at a solo creator using AI and decide any efficiency must be surrendered immediately.

The creator may work faster—but must charge less.

She may produce more—but must make each product cheaper.

She may reduce expenses—but keeping the difference is greedy.

Meanwhile, nobody applies that standard to the giant companies already automating everything they possibly can.

Funny how efficiency becomes immoral only when an individual creator benefits from it.

If the product is worse, say that

There are legitimate reasons to reject an AI-generated product.

Maybe the information is wrong.

Maybe the fiction is repetitive and emotionally flat.

Maybe the images contain obvious defects.

Maybe the seller did not review what the tool produced.

Maybe the product is a thin wrapper around an answer you could generate yourself in thirty seconds.

Maybe the creator copied someone else’s work, violated a license, or made deceptive claims about what the customer was purchasing.

Those are real problems.

Talk about those problems.

Say the quality is poor.

Say the product does not provide enough value.

Say the seller made claims that were not true.

Say you could get an equivalent result elsewhere for less.

But “AI was involved” is not a quality assessment.

It tells me something about the process.

It tells me nothing about whether the finished product is useful.

“AI-generated” is not a useful pricing category

What exactly qualifies for the discount?

A book drafted entirely by AI?

A book written by a human from an AI-generated outline?

A book written by a human and edited with AI?

A course with human-written lessons and AI-generated worksheets?

A template created by a human using AI-generated code?

A design that began with an AI concept and was rebuilt by a designer?

A product description polished with AI?

Customer-support documentation summarized with AI?

At what percentage does the price drop?

Ten percent AI?

Fifty percent?

Does using spellcheck count?

What about autocomplete?

What about software that quietly uses AI features without the creator even realizing it?

Once you start pricing products according to process purity, you need an absurd accounting system for measuring how human every individual pixel, sentence, and decision is.

Or we could judge the finished product.

Wild idea, I know.

You are allowed to decide it is not worth the price

Customers retain the most important power in the marketplace:

You do not have to buy it.

If you believe a product is overpriced, walk away.

If another seller offers something equally useful for less, buy that instead.

If you care deeply about a human-only process, seek out creators who promise one.

If provenance is part of the value for you, you are allowed to value it.

But your personal preference does not create a universal pricing rule.

You can say, “I would not pay that.”

You cannot turn that into, “No one should be allowed to charge that because AI made the process easier.”

The seller sets a price.

The customer decides whether the result is worth it.

The market handles the rest.

Charge for the value

If AI allows someone to create a better product, serve more customers, solve a problem faster, or compete with businesses that previously had enormous teams and budgets, good.

That is what useful technology does.

The creator still has to produce something worth purchasing.

The customer still gets to evaluate the offer.

Bad products will still fail.

Lazy sellers will still develop reputations.

Generic output will still struggle in a marketplace full of alternatives.

But a strong product does not become less valuable merely because the creator found a more efficient way to build it.

If AI makes the product worse, pay less because the product is worse.

If AI makes the process faster, you are not entitled to confiscate the creator’s efficiency.

You are buying the outcome.

Not the hours.

Not the keystrokes.

Not the struggle.

And definitely not the suffering.

Not because they dislike AI.

Not because they have questions about copyright, quality, ethics, or how the technology is being used. Those are fair conversations.

I unfollowed them because every damn post became another sermon about how their books were lovingly handcrafted by a real human—and therefore readers should value them more.

Another complaint about AI books stealing attention.

Another warning about the flood of “slop.”

Another speech about how long they spent researching, drafting, revising, editing, formatting, and sacrificing for their art.

And underneath all that noise, I kept hearing the same thing:

I worked really hard on this. Why aren’t people rewarding me?

Because readers are not buying your labor.

They are buying an experience.

Your effort is not the product

You may have spent five years writing your book.

You may have rewritten the ending seventeen times.

You may have stayed awake until three in the morning researching whether the moon would have been visible over London on a Tuesday in October of 1847.

You may have cried over chapter twelve.

You may have sacrificed weekends, sleep, money, relationships, and the last functioning nerve in your body.

That effort deserves respect.

It does not automatically deserve a sale.

The reader is not purchasing your sleepless nights. She is not reimbursing you for your research hours. She is not paying damages for the emotional suffering caused by your third-act rewrite.

She is handing you money in exchange for an experience.

She wants to laugh.

She wants to cry.

She wants to be scared, delighted, devastated, comforted, turned on, or transported somewhere else for a few hours.

Your book either delivers that experience or it doesn’t.

The difficulty of producing it does not change the contract.

Hard work and market value are not the same thing

Authors routinely confuse effort with value because effort is the part we can see.

We know how many hours we worked.

We know what the editor cost.

We know how many drafts we threw away.

We know how much courage it took to press publish.

The reader does not know any of that.

More importantly, the reader does not owe us anything because of it.

A book can take ten years to write and still be boring.

A book can be researched down to the stitching on a nineteenth-century boot and still have flat characters.

A book can be beautifully written and professionally edited and still have a cover that attracts the wrong audience.

A book can contain your entire heart and still fail to give the reader a reason to turn the page.

Meanwhile, another author can write a book in six weeks, use AI throughout the process, hire help where needed, put it into the hands of exactly the right readers, and deliver an experience those readers love.

The calendar does not decide which book is better.

The suffering does not decide.

The reader does.

“AI slop” is becoming a security blanket

There is bad AI-generated work in the world.

Of course there is.

There are also bad traditionally published books, bad indie books, bad handcrafted books, bad ghostwritten books, bad books that took fifteen years to finish, and bad books written on antique typewriters while the author stared meaningfully into the rain.

Humans produced mountains of slop long before ChatGPT showed up.

But “AI slop” has become a wonderfully convenient phrase because it allows authors to dismiss anything that scares them without examining why it scares them.

A book is selling quickly?

AI slop.

An author publishes more frequently?

AI slop.

A cover looks too polished?

AI slop.

The prose has an em dash?

Call the authorities.

At some point, “AI slop” stops being a useful description of low-quality work and becomes a protective spell.

If the successful book is slop, you do not have to study what it did well.

If the productive author is cheating, you do not have to examine your own systems.

If readers are gullible, you do not have to ask why your book failed to connect with them.

If AI is responsible for everything, you never have to consider the possibility that the market does not reward effort merely because it was sincere.

A lot of this is fear

Let’s be honest about what is happening.

Some authors are scared.

They are scared that the process they spent years mastering is changing.

They are scared that skills they paid thousands of dollars to acquire are becoming more accessible.

They are scared that someone with less money, less time, fewer industry connections, or a disability that makes the traditional process difficult can now produce competitive work.

They are scared that speed will matter.

They are scared that readers may not care how the sausage was made.

They are scared that the moat around authorship was not entirely talent.

Some of it was time.

Some of it was money.

Some of it was access.

Some of it was simply being willing and able to tolerate a slow, expensive, inefficient process.

AI lowers some of those barriers.

That does not guarantee quality. It does not replace judgment, taste, storytelling ability, or knowledge of the reader.

But it does mean more people can try.

And yes, some established authors hate that.

It feels much nicer to call the newcomers slop merchants than to admit you are frightened by a changing market.

Readers are not betraying you

Readers are not morally obligated to choose the book that required the most labor.

They are not betraying human creativity when they enjoy something created with assistance from AI.

They are not failing literature because they picked the fast-paced book with the trope they love instead of the deeply important novel that took twelve years to write.

They are choosing what they want to read.

That is what customers do.

And if we respect readers, we have to respect their choices—even when those choices do not reward our effort.

You cannot claim readers are intelligent, discerning people when they love your work and then call them gullible idiots when they enjoy someone else’s.

You cannot demand that readers care about author intent, artistic labor, and creative process when what they came for was a damn good story.

“But I worked hard” is not a marketing plan

Working hard on the book is not the same thing as making the book marketable.

You still need to know who it is for.

You still need a cover that communicates the correct genre and emotional promise.

You still need a description that makes the right reader curious.

You still need to put the book somewhere readers can find it.

You still need to build a backlist, communicate consistently, learn from your launches, and understand why one book connected while another did not.

The marketplace cannot see your effort.

It can only see what you made, how you presented it, and whether readers responded.

That may feel unfair.

It is also reality.

The fair standard

None of this means quality no longer matters.

It means we should judge quality by something more useful than how difficult the process was.

Does the book deliver what the cover and description promised?

Does the story hold the reader’s attention?

Are the characters consistent?

Does the ending satisfy the expectations the book created?

Was the work reviewed, revised, and checked before publication?

Can the author explain the choices inside the book?

Would the reader buy the next one?

Those are fair standards.

“Did you suffer enough while making it?” is not.

“Did you use every tool I personally approve of?” is not.

“Did the book take long enough to feel legitimate to me?” is not.

The only scoreboard that matters

Your effort deserves respect.

Your work deserves the opportunity to be seen.

You deserve to feel proud that you finished something difficult.

But none of that creates a debt between you and a stranger.

The reader does not owe you a purchase.

The reader does not owe you a positive review.

The reader does not owe you loyalty because your process was pure, expensive, slow, or painful.

Your book has to earn the reader’s attention.

Then it has to keep it.

Then, if you did the job well, it may earn the next sale.

That is the scoreboard.

Not the number of drafts.

Not the years invested.

Not the tools used.

Not the amount of suffering.

Readers are buying an experience. They are not reimbursing you for the difficulty of creating it.

Make the experience worth their time.

Then give them another one.

I went looking at the websites of a few people who get called experts in this industry.

Not random people with a Canva logo and a course they made last Tuesday. Names people know. Names people mention in groups, recommend to friends, and refer to like the question has already been settled.

They’ve been doing this for five years. Ten years. Long enough that “expert” now appears to be a permanent title nobody is allowed to check.

So I checked.

One site looked like it had been left exactly where someone set it down years ago. The products were still there. The claims were still there. The checkout buttons worked just fine.

The current information was another story.

On one, the latest blog post I could find was from 2023.

And I sat there thinking: You are still selling people advice today. What have you learned since then?

Because a hell of a lot has happened since 2023.

The ugly website isn’t the problem

Let me get the obvious defense out of the way.

I do not care if your website is pretty.

Some brilliant people have ugly websites. Some excellent consultants have homepages that look like they were assembled during the Obama administration. Design trends change every six minutes, and nobody should have to rebuild a functioning business because rounded buttons are out and sharp corners are back in.

An old-looking site does not prove someone is bad at their job.

But old information does.

If the products, advice, resources, and claims on your site have not visibly changed while the entire industry around them has, that is not a design choice. That is a relevance problem.

You can keep the ugly header.

You cannot keep selling 2023 as though it is 2026.

Experience and current expertise are not the same thing

Being in an industry for ten years means you have ten years of experience.

Good. That matters.

It does not automatically mean you know what works in year ten.

You can be experienced and outdated at the same time. In fact, the longer you’ve been around, the easier that trap gets. People know your name. Referrals keep coming. Your old wins keep doing the selling. Nobody asks when you last tested the advice because you earned a reputation back when the advice worked.

But expertise is not a trophy you win once and carry forever.

It is maintenance.

If you teach a field that changes, keeping up with the field is part of the job. You do not have to rewrite your site every week or publish a breathless reaction to every new feature.

You do have to show some evidence that you noticed the world kept moving.

Update a product page.

Revise the lesson that is no longer true.

Publish a post about what changed.

Put a date on the damn resource so buyers know which version of the internet it belongs to.

Tell people what you tested, what still works, what stopped working, and what you had completely wrong three years ago.

I trust an expert who says, “I changed my mind,” a whole lot more than one whose entire business appears preserved in amber.

And then there’s AI

This is the part that makes the silence impossible to defend.

You do not have to like AI.

You do not have to use it to write your posts, make your products, answer your email, or name your sourdough starter.

You can hate the flood of generic content. You can object to how particular tools were trained. You can believe some work should stay completely human. You can tell every client who walks through your door not to touch generative AI at all.

That is a position.

Pretending AI has nothing to do with your industry is not.

If you call yourself an advertising expert in 2026, you need to know what the hell AI is doing inside the advertising systems.

The platforms are using it for bidding. Targeting. Placement. Delivery. Creative combinations. Optimization. Deciding who is most likely to click, buy, subscribe, or ignore you.

You can choose not to make an AI image for an ad. The ad platform is still using machine learning to decide what happens to that image after you upload it.

You can refuse to use ChatGPT. Search is still changing. Discovery is still changing. The amount of content competing for attention is still changing. The economics of producing and testing that content are still changing.

Your personal AI policy does not stop AI from existing inside the systems you claim to understand.

So where is the statement?

Where is the updated article?

Where is the lesson explaining what the platforms are doing now, which controls still matter, and which “best practices” from three years ago need to be thrown in the trash?

Hell, write the anti-AI post. Tell me why you think it is all terrible. Explain exactly where you draw the line and what your clients should do instead.

At least that would show you have looked at the current landscape and formed an opinion.

Silence shows me nothing.

The defense I’ll accept

There are principles that do not expire.

Know your audience. Make a clear offer. Give people a reason to care. Build trust. Write copy that sounds like a human being. Measure what happened instead of declaring a campaign successful because you liked the graphic.

None of that stopped being true because an AI can generate fifty headlines before breakfast.

And no, every old course did not become worthless the day ChatGPT launched. A strong foundation is still a strong foundation.

But if you are selling that foundation today, you need to explain how it fits the building people are standing in today.

That is the fair standard.

I am not asking every expert to predict the future. I am asking them to acknowledge the present.

Tell me which principles survived.

Tell me which tactics did not.

Tell me what changed in the platforms, the buyers, the costs, the competition, and the way work gets made.

Tell me you have opened the dashboard sometime this decade.

Buyers are paying for now

This would be funny if people were not spending real money on it.

Authors and small-business owners hire these experts because they do not have unlimited time or unlimited budgets. They buy the course because they cannot afford to run every test themselves. They pay for the consultation because they need somebody who already understands the current system.

They are not buying a museum tour.

They are not paying to hear what worked when TikTok was new, Facebook targeting was completely different, generative AI was a tech demo, and search meant ten blue links.

They are trying to sell a book or grow a business now.

So “I have been doing this for ten years” is not enough information.

When did you last update the material?

When did you last run the strategy?

When did you last look at the platform instead of repeating the slide deck?

What changed?

What are you seeing in 2026 that you did not see in 2023?

If there is no answer anywhere—no revised product, no updated post, no current example, no public position—why should a buyer assume the private expertise is magically current?

The only title that matters

I am not interested in taking away anyone’s past accomplishments.

If you did great work five years ago, you did great work five years ago.

If you helped hundreds of clients, nobody can erase that.

But past results prove you were good then. They do not automatically prove you are current now.

That part has to be earned again and again.

Show me what you are testing.

Show me what you changed your mind about.

Show me where the industry moved and how your advice moved with it.

You do not need to worship AI. You do not need to chase every shiny tool. You do not need to redesign your homepage because somebody declared your font dead.

You do need to keep learning.

Because “I’ve been here for ten years” tells me when you arrived.

It does not tell me when you stopped paying attention.

And if your advice stopped in 2023, stop selling it as expertise for 2026.

That is not current expertise.

That is a rerun with a working checkout button.

Email 4 — Ask a question (day 6). Invite a reply. “What are you reading right now?” works. Two payoffs: it builds the relationship, and replies tell the inbox gods you’re a real person someone talks to — which keeps you out of spam.

Email 5 — What’s next (day 8). Now you invite them deeper: your group, your next release, your ARC team. Then they roll into your regular newsletter as a warm reader instead of a stranger.

Five emails, written once, working forever. And here’s where the AI part earns its keep without anyone needing to clutch pearls: hand a good model your books, your voice, and these five jobs, and you can draft the whole sequence in an afternoon. You’re not asking it to be you — you’re asking it to get a first draft on the page so you can make it sound like you. The tool drafts; you keep it honest.

Dispatch from the trenches.

Every few weeks a new “AI detector” launches, promising to sort the real writers from the machines. And every few weeks someone feeds it the Declaration of Independence, or a chapter of Hemingway, or the Bible, and the tool confidently rules it 99% AI-generated. This keeps happening because these tools do not work. Not “work imperfectly.” Do not work.

Here’s what they actually measure: “perplexity” and “burstiness” — roughly, how predictable and how uniform your sentences are. Clean, competent, well-edited prose scores as “AI” because good editing reduces randomness. So the better you write, the guiltier you look. Sit with that: the detectors penalize clarity.

This would be a funny tech-bro footnote except for what gets built on top of it. Authors are being accused, review-bombed, and dropped from promos because a $9 website flagged their book. People are asked to “prove” they wrote something — an impossible request, since no evidence exists that proves a human wrote a clean sentence. You can’t pass a test with no answer key, graded by a machine that flunks Hemingway.

And the false positives don’t land evenly. Non-native English speakers get flagged constantly, because they tend to write in simpler, more uniform structures. Writers with steady, consistent patterns get flagged. We accidentally built a lie detector with a bias problem and then handed it to a mob.

So here’s your defense, and it’s short: when someone “detects” your book, you don’t owe them a confession or a manuscript full of timestamps. You note that the tool also flags the Constitution, and you move on. The burden of proof is on the accuser, the tool is junk science, and you have books to write.

The detector industry sells certainty to frightened people. Don’t buy it — and don’t let anyone aim it at you.

There’s a new purity test making the rounds: ask an author who uses AI what inspired their book, and watch them fall apart.

It’s a great line. It’s also nonsense, and I can tell you exactly why.

The reader nobody asked

I read over three hundred books a year. Not “I aspire to read more.” Three hundred plus, every year, across genres, mostly for pleasure and partly because it’s my job to know what’s working.

In all those books, do you know how many times I’ve flipped to the back to find out what inspired the author?

Zero.

I want to be entertained. That’s the whole contract. If the book delivered, I go find the next one. If it didn’t, I don’t finish it. At no point in that process does the author’s origin story enter the equation, because I am not buying an origin story. I’m buying a few hours where I forget my phone exists.

The people running this test have confused their interest in the author with the reader’s interest in the book. Those are not the same market.

The most honest interview I ever read

I almost never read author interviews. One of the few I did, the interviewer asked a writer why she wrote her series.

Her answer: she needed to make rent.

That’s it. That’s the inspiration. And she was right to say it out loud, because most working authors would give you some version of the same answer if they weren’t worried about how it sounds. Most of us kinda want to get paid. 🙄

Somehow that answer disqualifies nobody. But say “I had an idea, ran it through a tool, and checked whether the market wanted it” and suddenly you’re not a real writer.

What the process actually looks like

Here’s the honest version of how a lot of books get made, AI or no AI:

An idea pops into your head. Sometimes it arrives from a dream and a thunderclap. Usually it arrives because you noticed something selling, or a trope you love isn’t being served well, or a reader emailed asking for a thing that doesn’t exist yet.

Then you research it. You build it out. You check whether it holds up as a story and whether anyone actually wants to read it. Plenty of ideas die right there — not because they weren’t inspired, but because they weren’t books.

Then you write the thing.

And then — this is the part nobody wants to hear — you market it. Because a book without a marketing plan is a document. Success comes from what happens after the writing far more often than it comes from a magic story that no one ever finds. There are gorgeous, deeply inspired novels sitting at rank 900,000 right now. Inspiration didn’t save them. Nothing about their origin story put them in front of a reader.

The test flunks a lot of people it wasn’t aiming at

Ask a work-for-hire author what inspired their book. The answer is “a contract.”

Ask a series author on book eleven of a packager-owned world. “The bible said so.”

Ask a ghostwriter. Ask a novelist whose editor handed them a concept and a deadline. Ask any of the enormously successful traditionally published writers whose books started as a publisher’s idea of what would sell next spring.

They’d all “fall apart” under this questioning. Somehow the test never gets pointed at them. Which tells you the test was never really about inspiration.

The version of this question that’s actually fair

I’ll give the critics one thing, because it’s the only part with teeth.

If you can’t talk about your own book — who the characters are, why the ending lands where it lands, what you were trying to make the reader feel — that’s a real problem. Not a moral one. A business one. You’ll flounder in interviews, your blurbs will be flat, your ads won’t convert, and you won’t be able to write the next one in the series without contradicting yourself.

So yes: know your book. Know it cold. That’s a fair standard and I’d hold anyone to it, tools or no tools.

But “what inspired you” isn’t that question. It’s a vibe check dressed up as a craft check. You can pass it with a beautiful lie and fail it while having written something excellent.

The only test that matters

Did the reader finish it?

Did they buy the next one?

That’s it. That’s the whole scoreboard. Readers vote with their time and their money, and they have never once voted based on where the idea came from.

Write good books. Learn to sell them. Let people who’d rather interrogate your inspiration than write their own next chapter keep doing exactly that.

The free plan got quartered in under a year. Still a great place to start; just know you’ll hit the paywall sooner than the “1,000 free!” advice still floating around promises.

Kit (formerly ConvertKit) — bigger free subscriber cap, creator-focused, but you get exactly one automation free, so you’ll upgrade the second you want a real welcome sequence.

Substack / Beehiiv — free to send, built-in discovery, dead simple. Great if you want the newsletter-as-publication vibe and don’t mind less control over design and automations.

Brevo — pay by emails sent instead of by subscriber count. Handy if you’ve got a big list you email rarely.

The one non-negotiable, whatever you pick: it has to do automations. That’s the part that works while you sleep, and it’s the whole reason we’re here. Skip anything that locks basic automation behind a premium tier.

Here’s the thing the witch-hunt crowd won’t sit with: the people who actually run publishing are calmer about AI than your local Facebook group is.

Start with the bookstore. Barnes & Noble’s CEO, James Daunt, went on the Today Show and said the quiet part out loud — he’d stock an AI-written book “as long as [it] says it’s an AI-written book and doesn’t pretend to be something else and isn’t ripping off somebody else.” That’s the whole radical position: be honest, don’t steal, let readers choose.

He got thousands of calls to boycott the chain. Within days he was walking it back, reassuring everyone that B&N takes “active measures to exclude all AI-generated books.” He said something reasonable, the mob lit a torch, and he folded.

Then the executives. At the 2026 US Book Show, the CEOs of Hachette, Sourcebooks, and Authors Equity sat on a panel that Publishers Weekly headlined “Publishing CEOs Warn Against AI ‘Witch Hunt.’” Hachette’s David Shelley — whose own house pulled a novel over AI allegations months earlier — put it bluntly: “anyone who thinks they know the answers here is lying or delusional, because we’re all trying to figure this out.”

Sit with that. The head of a Big Five publisher says, on the record, that nobody has the answers yet — while a 4,000-person author group will confidently convict a 2018 backlist book of being “obviously AI” because it used an em-dash.

I’m not telling you the suits are your friends. Those same CEOs said AI creative writing is a no-go inside their own houses, mostly because their risk departments said so. But notice the gap: the institutions with the most to lose are preaching caution and humility. The mob is preaching a bonfire.

And here’s the double standard nobody on the witch-hunt will answer: traditional publishing has used undisclosed ghostwriters for a century. Celebrity “memoirs,” packaged thrillers, the brand-name author who “writes” six books a year — all ghosted, none disclosed to a single reader, and nobody organized a boycott. Disclose a writing tool, though, and out come the torches. So where’s the ghostwriter disclosure crusade? There isn’t one — because it was never really about honesty.

You don’t owe the mob a confession. You owe your readers a good book. Follow your platform’s rules, make the thing worth their time, and let the people who can’t tell Hemingway from a horoscope argue with each other.

Ready?

The first one — the shirtless guy at the desk — was a demo from a professional cover designer I was paying to work with.

The second one — the one that actually looks like a mafia don romance — I made myself, in ChatGPT, for the price of a subscription.

I’ll wait while that settles.

Now, before anyone reaches for a torch: this is not a "cover designers are a scam" post. They are not. I hire cover designers. I will keep hiring cover designers. A great designer is worth every dollar, and there are covers in my catalog I could not have made myself if you gave me a year to try.

But here is the thing nobody likes to say out loud: "professional" and "good" are not the same word.

That actual first cover I was given? The model looked like a shirtless kid. For a dark romance about a grown, dangerous man, it didn’t just miss the genre — it made me genuinely uncomfortable (which is why I put a fake one similar up). No amount of moody skyline behind him fixed that. It was a polished, competent, professionally produced cover for the wrong book with all the wrong pieces.

The ChatGPT one isn’t flawless either. Look closely and a designer will find things to fix. But it reads as the right genre at a glance, the man looks like a man, and it doesn’t make me want to apologize to anyone.

Here is the part I really want new authors to hear.

When people say "just make your own cover," they usually mean Photoshop or Canva. Both are great. Both also have a learning curve nobody warns you about.

Photoshop is a genuine skill. Layers, masking, blend modes, typography, kerning, stock licensing, getting a face to sit believably against a background — that is weeks-to-months of learning, not an afternoon. Canva is friendlier, and I love it, but making something in Canva that doesn’t look like a Canva template still takes practice, taste, and time you may not have before book one.

And then there is the money. A quality custom cover is usually $200 and up — often well up — and honestly, that is fair. Good design is skilled labor. But for a brand-new author who hasn’t earned a dollar yet, $200 per book is not a rounding error. Sometimes it is the difference between publishing this month and publishing "someday."

That is the whole argument for AI covers. Not "designers are obsolete." Not "free is always better." Just this: it lowers the barrier to entry far enough that a new author can put a genre-appropriate, non-embarrassing cover on their first book without going into debt — and then reinvest in a pro designer once the books are actually earning.

Both things are true at once. Use what you can afford now. Upgrade when you can. Don’t let anyone shame you out of publishing because you couldn’t drop $200 on a cover before you’d sold a single copy.

Whatever you use — AI, Canva, or a $500 designer — a cover has one job: sell the right reader the right book. So check the boring stuff. Does it signal the genre in under two seconds? Is the title readable at thumbnail size, where people actually shop? Does the model and the vibe match the character and the heat level? Are you legally clear on the image and the fonts?

Get those right and nobody browsing at midnight cares which tool made it.

This is the question I get from other authors once they realize how much I put out. And the answer surprises people, because it’s the opposite of what “AI productivity” content tells you.

The secret isn’t speed. It’s removing yourself from the parts that don’t need you.

Here’s the trap: AI makes it possible to produce faster, so people produce more, so they end up working more — and then wonder why they’re fried. They used a time-saving tool to give themselves a bigger job. That’s not a win. That’s a hamster wheel with better lighting.

What actually keeps me sane is asking, ruthlessly, which parts of this genuinely need my brain and which parts just need a brain. The concept, the taste calls, the “is this any good” judgment — that’s me, and AI doesn’t touch it. The repetitive scaffolding around it — that’s where the tools and the systems live, and I’ve spent more time building those than building any single book.

The goal was never “make the most books.” It was “make excellent things, consistently, without the work eating my life.” AI is only worth it if it buys you that. If it’s just letting you do more of everything, you’ve been sold the wrong dream.

So before you chase output: figure out what only you can do, protect that fiercely, and automate the rest into the ground.

We need to talk about money, because authors are weird about it, and the weirdness is costing you.

Here’s the pattern I see constantly: a writer pours months into a book, then prices it like they’re embarrassed it exists. Ninety-nine cents. Permafree. “I just want people to read it.” And underneath that is a quiet belief that the work isn’t worth more — or that charging real money for it makes you greedy instead of an artist.

That’s not humility. It’s a tax you’re paying on your own self-doubt.

What authors who actually earn are doing: they price for the value, not for their nerves. They know a race to the bottom is a race nobody wins — when everyone’s free, free stops meaning anything, and you’ve trained your readers that your work is worth nothing. They use low prices as a strategic tool — a loss-leader first-in-series, a launch promo with a deadline — not as a permanent apology.

The mindset shift is small and it changes everything: your reader isn’t doing you a favor by buying. You’re doing them one by writing. You made a thing that’ll give someone hours of escape, or teach them something, or get them through a hard week. That has worth. Price like you believe it does.

And before anyone says “but my genre / my list / my platform” — yes, pricing is contextual, and yes, strategy matters. I’m not telling you to slap thirty dollars on a debut novella. I’m telling you to stop letting fear set the number. Run the math on what a sustainable business actually needs, then price toward that on purpose.

The apology pricing has to go. It’s not noble. It’s just scared.

This is the question I get most, usually with a little heat behind it. My honest answer: yes, it absolutely does — when people use it lazily. And no, it doesn’t have to. Both halves are true, and most arguments about AI writing fall apart because people only want to say one of them.

The lazy path is real and it’s everywhere. One prompt, one click, upload, repeat. You can spot those books from the product page — interchangeable, thin, and readers are getting faster at sniffing them out. I’m not going to defend that. It’s throwaway work, and it makes the whole category harder for everyone doing it right.

But “the tool can be used badly” is not the same as “the tool is bad.” A camera in the wrong hands makes thousands of blurry, pointless photos. That didn’t make photography fake. The difference was never the camera — it was whether a person with taste and intent was behind it.

The books I’m proud of have my judgment in every layer: the concept, the structure, the voice, the hundred small decisions about what stays and what goes. AI made me faster at executing those decisions. It did not make the decisions. That’s the line, and it’s a bright one.

So when someone asks whether AI makes generic books, the real question underneath is: are you going to bring taste and intent, or are you going to click the button and walk away? The tool will happily do either. That part was always on you.

Short answer, no hedging: no. It’s nobody’s business but yours, and you are not obligated to tell anyone, anything.

Now let me back that up, because the pressure to “disclose” is one of the most manipulated conversations in this whole space — and once you see how the gears turn, it stops having any power over you.

Start with who’s actually mad. Watch where the witch-hunts come from. It is not readers. I’d put it at 95% other authors — people who feel threatened, dressing fear up as ethics and calling it a reader-protection crusade. The small slice of readers who do pile on almost always got pointed at the target by an author first. The “betrayed readers” movement is, overwhelmingly, an author turf war wearing a reader costume.

And here’s the part that should end the argument: they can’t even tell. The AI accusations now regularly land on books written years before any of these tools existed. People get accused over an em-dash, a clean sentence, a word someone decided was “a tell.” If the mob can confidently finger a 2018 backlist book as AI, their detection is vibes and a vendetta — not evidence. You cannot fail a test that has no answer key.

So stop performing for a jury that’s making it up as it goes.

The one real obligation — and notice it’s not to readers: if a platform asks you to check a disclosure box at upload, check it honestly. That’s a terms-of-service thing between you and a store that pays you, not a confession you owe the internet. Follow the rules where you publish. Past that, you don’t owe a disclaimer, a cover sticker, or an explanation to a single soul.

Because here’s what readers actually want: the book to deliver. The swoon, the scare, the can’t-put-it-down. They are not auditing your process. The people demanding a “made with AI” label are almost never the ones who were going to buy the book anyway.

My own line, for the record: I don’t lie about how I work. If someone genuinely asks, I’ll tell them plainly — I use AI as a tool, the judgment is mine, the book is mine. But “I won’t lie” is a long way from “I owe you a disclosure.” Answering honestly when asked is not the same as confessing to a crime I didn’t commit.

So consider this your permission slip, if you needed one: make a great book, follow your platform’s rules, and let the mob argue with itself. It’s nobody’s fucking business but yours.

Some of the most repeated advice in writing is just fear that’s been around long enough to sound like wisdom. Let me poke a few sacred cows. You can be mad at me in the replies.

“Write every day or you’re not a real writer.” No. Consistency helps, sure — but this rule has produced more guilt than books. Plenty of working authors write in focused bursts, take weeks off, and out-produce the daily-grinders. The daily rule isn’t a law of craft. It’s a productivity superstition that makes people who miss a day feel like frauds.

“Never write to market — write what’s in your heart.” This one’s usually said by people who aren’t paying their rent with writing. Writing to market doesn’t mean selling your soul. It means caring whether anyone actually wants the thing before you spend six months making it. The authors who eat are the ones who found the overlap between what they love and what readers are reaching for. Romance, mystery, and thriller writers have known this forever. “Write only for yourself” is lovely advice for a hobby and terrible advice for a business.

“It has to take years / suffering makes it art.” The romance of the tortured writer has wasted more talent than any tool ever will. Slow doesn’t mean good. Painful doesn’t mean profound. Some of the best work gets made fast, by people who enjoy it, using every shortcut they can find. The suffering was never the point.

Here’s the test I run on any piece of writing advice before I follow it: is this true, or does it just sound noble? A scary amount of it is the second thing. It survives because it makes the person saying it feel serious, not because it makes anyone a better or more successful writer.

Keep what’s actually working for you. Throw the rest out, guilt-free. The cows were never sacred.
