I never feel more at home than when I’m spending time at my grandparents’. Despite only visiting once a month at most, I’m instantly at ease as soon as I walk through the door.

The smell of pork and garlic bubbling in a hearty stew.

The familiar murmur of Coronation Street humming in the background.

The fully stocked fridge at my disposal.

I know I’m back in safe hands.

It’s the little things, like my grandad always making sure there’s a nightlight beside my bed (and explaining how to use it every single time, despite the fact I’ve used it 100 times before).

The way he gives me a folded piece of kitchen roll with every meal. He serves it on my favourite bottle-green tray, its surface worn soft and faded from years of home-cooked meals.

The way he remembers that I don’t like any margarine on my toast in the mornings.

It’s these little details that make me feel so incredibly cared for.

This is the host I aspire to be and, with my friends visiting next week - driving three hours from our hometown - I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can make them feel as welcome and at home as my grandparents do for me.

Inspired by their top-tier hosting skills, here are some ways to make your guests feel at home:

1. Dish up their plate for them

If I’m eating dinner at someone else’s house, I don’t want to serve my own food.

I don’t mean this in a diva-ish “I refuse to plate my own dinner” way, but I always feel awkward about how much to take.

Too little and am I offending their cooking? Too much and am I being greedy?

I LOVE a host who plates it up for me, saving me from the stress of this very first-world dilemma.

Start with a small-to-medium-sized amount and say they can come back up for more if they’re hungry. The pressure is off both of you then.

2. Keep a trinket dish in the bathroom

My downstairs bathroom isn’t big enough to accommodate this right now, but if you have a decent-sized one, add a little trinket dish where you can leave things like perfume samples, hair ties or mints.

3. Create a basket for overnight guests

I’ve seen some wildly excessive examples of this on TikTok where creators massively play into overconsumption, but I think there is a way to do this without going overboard on both waste and money.

Have a think about what will actually be useful to your friends and family.

For example, my guest room (also known as the sofabed in the living room) gets super bright in the mornings as we don’t have any curtains yet, so I would include a sleep mask so they can lie in a little longer.

Functional items like make-up wipes, cotton wool and fluffy socks will all go down a treat. These things don’t need to be flashy or expensive - you’d be surprised at how excited adults get over free, practical things.

As a reference, I’ll be including:

• Sanitary products

• Make-up wipes

• Sleep masks

• Ear plugs

• Water bottle

• Toothbrush

• Toothpaste

• Hair ties

• Mini hair brush

• Tea bags and a mug

• Tissues

• Your guests’ favourite snacks

5. Make the experience easy

A water jug pre-filled on the table so they don’t have to ask for a drink, a name card on the table so they know where to sit - these are easy ways to make the experience in your home feel effortless and like they’re not tiptoeing in someone else’s.

If they’re staying the night and the plug socket is far from the bed, give them an extension lead to make their life easier - and, better yet, plug in a charger in case they forgot theirs.

6. Put effort into your table

Some may think it’s frivolous, but to me, a beautifully laid table (and equally thoughtful menu) shows you’ve put your heart and soul into their visit.

When I say beautiful and thoughtful, I don’t mean you need to whip up the fanciest meal in the world or buy a whole new tableset.

It’s not about creating a picture-perfect table or spending hundreds of pounds; it’s about noticing the details that will make that particular person happy.

Celebrating a friend’s birthday? Cook them their go-to childhood meal and choose napkins in their favourite colour.

7. Be relaxed yourself

While attentiveness is lovely at first, it can quickly start to feel like pestering if you’re asking people for the 100th time whether they want a glass of water. This is something my grandad has recently learned after years of running jokes about it (I love him for it, really).

You can’t pour from an empty cup and running around like a headless chicken isn’t going to serve anyone.

Besides, your experience and enjoyment is just as important as everyone else’s. Don’t forget to serve yourself, too!

8. Remember what your guests like

One of the simplest ways to make someone feel special is to remember the things they like and don’t like.

Whether it’s as small as remembering they hate cucumber or as important as not cooking with something they’re allergic to, they will notice and it will go a long way.

9. Create a clean environment

There’s nothing worse than spotting a sticky worktop at a friend’s house and then realising you’re about to eat a meal prepared in that very kitchen.

With that in mind, give your home a good once-over before guests arrive - particularly the kitchen and bathroom.

That said, don’t go too far in the other direction. Your guests shouldn’t feel like they’re in a museum, scared to put a glass down or leave a crumb behind. It might be controversial, but I’ll never ask someone to take their shoes off either.

Your home should be clean enough that people feel comfortable, but lived-in enough that they feel comfortable making a mess.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes a home feel happy, and I’ve realised it isn’t always the big things. New furniture and fresh paint can certainly help, but more often than not, it’s the little details that bring me the most joy.

Here are some of my favourite home rituals:

1. Pretty soap bars

There’s something so luxurious about a bar of soap by the sink - especially if it’s French, colourful, and resting in a pretty holder.

Even if I never actually use it (because, let’s face it, pump soap is so much easier), I’m still fulfilled by simply looking at it every time I wash my hands.

I found the most incredible lemon-shaped ones in my local home store the other day, and they’re just perfect for summer.

2. Flowers around the house

Nothing makes me happier than a vase of fresh flowers on the dining room table, but I stop buying them during the summer because my hay fever is just awful.

However, I’ve recently discovered that dried flowers (as pictured above) are much better for allergy sufferers, so I’ll definitely be giving them a go over the next few months.

Dahlias, sunflowers, sweet peas and roses are some of my favourite flowers that are in season in late June/July.

3. Fresh sheets

No, I lied earlier. Nothing actually makes me happier than fresh sheets (sorry, flowers!). The feeling of slipping into crisp cotton sheets after a hot shower is incomparable - especially if you’ve just shaved your legs.

I’ve recently bought some anti-allergy pillow protectors, and they’ve taken the freshness of my bed to another level.

4. The table set for each meal

This might be the norm in most houses, but as someone who lives in a house share with two guys, setting the table just isn’t a thing (they’re lucky if they get a folded piece of kitchen roll with their cutlery).

I wrote about this in my previous post, but making a table look pretty is one of my favourite things in the world, so I make sure to set it for as many dinners as I can throughout the week.

While I don’t put absolutely everything out, I always bring out some pretty placemats and glasses to make the meal feel a little more special.

5. A water jug in the fridge

Again, I feel like this is a pretty standard thing, but when I have a crisp jug of water in the fridge, I feel like I have my life in order.

6. A butter dish

I only started using a butter dish six months ago and, let me tell you, I’m obsessed! This is another thing that - for no real reason at all - makes me feel like I have my sh*t together, and I’ll never go back to keeping it in the wrapper.

I’m currently using a clear plastic one, but I’m desperate to get my hands on a colourful ceramic version, like the one above.

7. A candle while I cook

I don’t know why, but lighting a candle while I cook makes me feel like such a luxurious person. They don’t need to be expensive, either – I’m literally using an £8 one from Amazon, and the vibes are still incredible.

Why did we ever decide to stop giving out party bags after a certain age? As a child, there was nothing more exciting than receiving one at the end of a friend’s birthday party - and sometimes it was even better than the event itself.

Plastic yo-yos that you could never get to work, edible bracelets that left your wrist sticky after you’d bitten off the crunchy, powdery sweets, and the plastic drum you would addictively rub back and forth between your palms, driving everyone nuts with the noise. And let’s not forget about the best bit — the half-stale Victoria sponge cake, plastered in sickly sweet fondant icing.

While incredibly simple, it felt like taking a piece of the party home with you and letting it live on for a little bit longer. And there’s a reason why, even now, I can still picture every detail of those nostalgic souvenirs.

I think this is something we’re missing from our parties as adults. We might be past the days of plastic junk destined for landfill, but there’s definitely a way to recreate that joy with a grown-up (and more sustainable) spin.

The daffodils are blooming, the sun is shining, and it’s finally light outside at 6pm — which can only mean one thing: spring is officially here (a.k.a. the best season of them all!)

To celebrate my favourite time of year, I’ve put together some springtime hosting ideas to inspire your next gathering, including tablescape themes, recipe inspiration, and the perfect outfits to complement each one.
