I say self-indulgent, because I really wanted the t-shirt for myself. Not just because it has my character’s logo on the front, but for the words we’ve put on the back…

I’ve had bits of Agent 23 kicking around for years, and the phrase “Synchronicity Engineer”, but I’ve only recently put them all together and realised what the character could be. I’m not gonna give too much of the story away yet (although the accompanying mini-book “The Final Secret of Agent 23” does give away quite a lot), but Agent 23 has special powers to make meaningful coincidences occur.

As for the t-shirt - I love the idea that there could be a team of designated people who hang around in public spaces, making sure weird stuff happens. My great hope is that some synchronistic event will befall an innocent person in my vicinity, which will totally freak them out, then they’ll look over at me and see the words “Synchronicity Engineer” on the back of my t-shirt…

We’ve screen printed fifty of these shirts, and they are now in the Tank Girl Store along with a bunch of extras - mini-book, agent ID card, and badge. Maybe you’ll want to be a Synchronicity Engineer too? Help us keep shit weird.

This weekend (Friday 26th - Sunday 28th June), I will be showing my paintings alongside four other artists at the Old School, Duddo, Northumberland. Free entry, work will be for sale as well as to view.

I know it says “Solstice” on the flyer, and we tried our best to make it all align with the celestial event, but it just wouldn’t work. So here we are, a week later, but the Solstice spirit is strong with us, we will still be beaming with cosmic energy and good vibrations.

I'll also be happy to sign any Tank Girl comics/books etc. you might bring along. These exhibitions have a very relaxed atmosphere, and are set in an incredibly beautiful, rural location, lots of time and space to chat and enjoy the art and the nearby stone circle. There may be free biscuits.

In the late Eighties everyone I knew had their own VHS movie library, even if it only contained a couple of tapes, you had to have a copies of your favourite movies, just like you had to have vinyl or CD copies of your favourite music albums.

Everyone I knew had a VHS copy of David Lynch’s 1986 movie Blue Velvet. It was a stone-cold, back-late-pissed-from-the-pub, sure-fire crowd-pleaser, every time.

Around 1990, as Tank Girl’s star was ascending, The Duke of York cinema in Brighton put Blue Velvet on a late-night “Blue” double-bill with Betty Blue. We all dutifully trouped along to watch our beloved best films one more time (if I remember rightly, you could get away with smoking spliffs in the balcony seats of The Duke, which we undoubtably did), and then we floated home to Worthing on a blissful cloud of Lynchian weirdness.

It was around this time that Jamie, Glyn Dillon, and I could be caught humming the 1963 Bobby Vinton song Blue Velvet, as featured in the movie - we’d heard it a lot, it was catchy, we just started singing it. Soon we had mutated the lyrics from “She wore Blue Velvet…” to the slightly ruder “She wore a Blue Helmet…”. Well, we thought it was funny.

A year or so later, confronted with yet another blank page where a Tank Girl story should be, I suggested to Jamie that I’d like Jack Kerouac to appear in the strip, so that I could have a bash at narrating it in a mock Kerouacian style. We toyed with various titles, until Jamie started singing our old favourite “She wore a Blue Helmet…”. And there it was, our title. We stirred in some college-student rail travel, some messy mescaline trippage, and a frightening merger of The Hair Bear Bunch and The Banana Splits, and Tank Girl: Blue Helmet was born.

Here we are, 35 years on, and we’ve put together a one-shot comic that contains both parts of Blue Helmet, and comes complete with a fold-out poster magazine, a trade card, and a 2 inch Hairy Banana Bunch badge. There’s two variant covers to choose from.

Yeah, I know, I only mentioned this a couple of days ago. But it is now upon us, and I’ll be at the exhibition for the next three days, so this is my last crafty shout-out. It’s SPRING EQUINOX tomorrow, so Happy Equinox to you all - we are now half way between Mid-Summer and Mid-Winter. We’ll be hiking up to Duddo Five Stones stone circle tomorrow (Friday) to celebrate. The art show will be open for a couple of hours before we set off. Then open again on Saturday and Sunday - see details on the flyer below…

My art is starting to go a little bit nuts this time out, and it’s fixing to get even more nuts for the next show. I hope you have fun with it if you come along. A free and creative art space, with lovely people, and free chocolates. And possibly free mint tea if you ask nicely.

In the spring of 1976, 9-year-old me was hanging around Tarring Park in Worthing with my brother, when we met up with our friend and neighbour Duncan. Duncan was a few years older than me, and was a 70’s Rocker, always dressed in a plaid shirt, turned-up blue jeans, and towering quiffed hair. With this sophisticated look he was able to get into the cinema to see films that were out of our age range, and had just been to the local Odeon to see Jaws, the movie that invented the Blockbuster. We were fascinated to hear about what happened in the story of Jaws, and listened intently as Duncan gave us a blow-by-blow of the plot - we were gripped with excitement as he outlined the end scene, “…then he took his rifle, and he shot Jaws in the head. Jaws exploded… HE WAS A ROBOT.” Wow, we were blown away, what a twist! All that melodrama with the marine biologist and the local politicians, and the damned shark had been a freaking ROBOT all along! Who ever would’ve guessed? Brilliant. Genius. I filed away that piece of movie information and went on with my life, safe in the knowledge that Jaws was actually a robot.

Then, in 1981, Jaws had its TV premiere. And I watched it.

The movie makes several rather blatant, ham-fisted points of showing how volatile the Scuba Oxygen Tanks on the boat “Orca” are. “Ooo, don’t clang them around too much, they could blow up”. They were Chekhov’s Oxygen Tanks, “If you show a volatile oxygen tank in the First Act, then it must explode in the Third Act”.

Chief Brody, the movie’s hero, saves himself from the jaws of Jaws by throwing an oxygen tank into the shark’s mouth and then shooting it, causing a massive explosion that rips Jaws into tiny pieces (see above image montage).

All of this fuss about the tanks had obviously by-passed Duncan, and, in his excitement of watching a blood-thirsty blockbuster, he had completely missed the point, and then filled in the blanks with his young imagination. What kinds of things blow up when you shoot them? Robots.

JAWS WAS NOT A ROBOT. My whole world tilted a fraction on its axis.

I guess this is a cautionary tale about not taking something as fact when it has been processed through somebody else’s filter. Go carefully, my friends.

Next weekend - Friday 20th March to Sunday 22nd March - sees the second in our series of Sun-driven, seasonal Art Exhibitions SPRING EQUINOX 2026. Alongside four other artists (one of which will be my delectable wife Lou) I will be showing and selling my artwork in the epic setting of The Old School, in the Border village of DUDDO. As with last time, walks up to the stone circle Duddo Five Stones will be happening (see flyer below). Again, I’ll be happy to sign any Tank Girl ephemera you care to bring along. There’s a really friendly, arty vibe to these events, we’d love to see you there.

On the weekend of 20th/21st December I will be showing some of my paintings at The Old School, Duddo, Northumberland, alongside my friends - artists Samantha Cary and Scott Robertson. It will be an informal, pop-up event, and I’ll be there both days to chat about painting, Tank Girl, slot car racing, or anything else you care to discuss.

As I haven’t made any other appearances at cons or signings since last year, I will be happy to sign Tank Girl books, comics, merch, etc..

At 2.30pm on the afternoon of Sunday 21st, we will close the show and (weather permitting) walk up to the nearby stone circle Duddo Five Stones, in time for the Winter Solstice at 3.03pm. If you’re thinking of coming on the walk to the stones, please be prepared for mud and cold, and hopefully an epic, beautiful Solstice sundown!

If all goes to plan, we will think about making this a regular event, popping-up four times a year on each Solstice and Equinox.

Meanwhile, back at Tank Girl HQ, we are still working like busy little elves, sending out sacks of parcels. The OFFICIAL TANK GIRL STORE will remain trading until Monday 22nd of December, when we will pull down the shutters for a couple weeks break.

We’ve got to a point at Tank Girl HQ where we can no longer move freely around the office. To be honest, it’s been that way for a while, but now the separate elements of a thousand different projects are threatening to drown us. So many left overs and tail-ends from long-finished projects and products.

We don’t want to head into 2026 in such an untidy state, so we’re having a massive clear-out. After numerous requests, we’ve finally gotten around to printing up a fresh batch of the Black & White version of the Tank Girl/Deadline 5ft Door Poster. M.I.A. for three decades, Deadline Magazine and its spiritual-cousin publication A1 Anthology were homes to many budding artists and writers in the 80s-90s. Lovely editor Dave Elliott had the pleasure/pain of handling Tank Girl stories in both of those publications, as Jamie and I tested his patience and editorial skills to the limit.

Now Dave is back, teaming up with Horrible Future! to resurrect A1 and Deadline for a hungry modern audience.

Conan/Blizzard artist Alex Horley has created a spook-tastic “Tankenstein” variant cover (revealed for the first time right here!), and we’ve reanimated a classic Hewlett & Martin era Tank Girl story, originally published in A1, now with revised script and lettering, and a brand new lick of coloured paint. The first issue of A1Deadline will be launching as an 80 page Special on KICKSTARTER on 21st October - just one one week from today. Check the links below and sign up for all the latest info. As a further venture into keeping my creativity moving (I was last spotted buying too many typewriters - see previous post), I have started experimenting with abstract art. I’m splashing a LOT of paint around, I don’t give a shit. And it works, it really frees up the old creative cogs. I’m especially enjoying cheap fluorescent acrylics and artists’ crayons, and smashing it all down on wooden panels, rather than canvas or paper. I can highly recommend it, if you’re in a funk. More on that in a future post.

The BIG NEWS right now is that our OFFICIAL TANK GIRL STORE has RESUMED SHIPPING TO USA. Yep, we’ve finally figured a way to integrate the whole tariff shiz with our shipping. Thanks for your patience on this, we’re happy to invite you all back in!

For those of you that missed it, here’s my introduction to the Blu Ray book -

“We stood on the rooftop terrace of The Griffith Observatory (the same place where Nicholas Roeg had filmed James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause in 1955), the Hollywood sign was lit up on the adjacent hillside, Century City glistened in the distance, and all of downtown Los Angeles spread out before us like a magic carpet of dreams and possibilities. 1980s New-Romantic punk rocker Adam Ant (who had kindly taken it upon himself to act as our tour guide around Hollywood for our trip) was trying to get us to re-enact the flick-knife fight from Rebel Without A Cause with him.

Jamie Hewlett and I were two fresh-faced youths from the South Coast of England who had created a shambolic, unprofessional and, at times, totally incomprehensible comic strip about a girl who lived in a tank and had a kangaroo as a boyfriend. MGM had flown us to Beverly Hills to sign a movie contract. Adam Ant wanted us to fight.

How the hell had we arrived at this situation?

From humble beginnings as a single-page mock-advertisement in a fanzine we’d produced whilst studying at Worthing Art College, Tank Girl then sprang into life in October 1988 as the breakout character in Brett Ewins and Steve Dillon’s monthly publication Deadline magazine, dedicated to comics, music and culture. She ram-raided the British comics industry, ignoring conventional comic book thinking and formatting, eschewing meaningful plot and character development, and making sworn enemies of the Old Guard and the gatekeepers of “Proper Comics.”

Once she was rolling there was no stopping her, and ideas and offers for projects outside of the comics medium came thick and fast: an animated TV series? A punk band fronted by Tank Girl? An advert for Wrangler’s jeans? Yeah, why the hell not. Some projects came to fruition, some didn’t, but Jamie and I faced it all with an air of stoic stupidity, because… that’s what Tank Girl would’ve done. It seemed disingenuous to play it any other way.

Penguin Books offered to publish the first year’s worth of stories in a single volume graphic novel, so Tank Girl: Book One was born. Director and producer Rachel Talalay was given a copy of the book by her daughter for Christmas, and she instantly fell in love with the raw, edgy craziness of the comic. Rachel started touting it around Hollywood to see if any studios were interested in adapting it into a movie. She was turned down by nearly everyone (famously, Steven Spielberg politely declined, stating that the property was “too hip” for him, which sparked our instant “Too Hip For Spielberg” Tank Girl t-shirt design). Finally the pitch was seen by Alan Ladd Jr. This was the same guy who had green-lit the first Star Wars movie back in the mid-1970s. He saw something in Tank Girl that he thought was worthwhile and pressed the green button. This is it, we thought, we’re gonna make our own Star Wars.

Of course, the early incarnation of our comic was almost completely unadaptable; in our fight to not be categorised or pigeon-holed, and in the wilful obscurity of some of our plots and in-jokes, we had created something that made no conventional sense. At the time we thought that was cool and funny, but for the guys trying to make commercially viable blockbuster movies it was complete gibberish, what were they meant to do with that stuff?

So some things had to change to make a movie that held together. First, and most noticeable from the outset, the movie became post-apocalyptic; a devastating event had created the opportunity for one entity to monopolise a resource (very Mad Max) and grab ultimate power. In contrast, we had relative civilisation in the comic: a President (Paul Hogan!), state armies, hot and cold running water, and a little bookshop where Gustav Klimt could be seen shopping with George Gurdjieff. The original world of the comic was a neo-Western, in which Tank Girl and her gang could roam around the dusty Outback, antagonise authority, cause chaos and generally upset the status quo of society by being naughty outlaws. The world in the movie feels closer to sci-fi, where Tank Girl is driven by revenge and a quest to free an abducted child.

Movie Tank Girl is a lone-wolf, having started out as part of a dysfunctional nuclear family, only to be wrenched away after the senseless execution of her lover and friends. This is another key change in the adaptation; whereas in the comic we would’ve played the annihilation of Tank Girl’s family for laughs (hilarious, yeah?), the movie used it to give the character a serious purpose and to add weight to the story. Jamie and I wrote stupid storylines, and layered them with a sprinkling of pathos and yet more silliness. The movie took a scenario that was heavy and consequential, and then added the jokes over the top.

This made for a different flavour of humour, but it would’ve been hard to turn one of our early comic stories into a feature-length movie; unless you’re making a spoof, you have to have some emotional pull, something for the audience to anchor to. Since the movie was released in 1995, we have created Tank Girl stories with more emotional depth, and attempted the fine juggling act of balancing seriousness, poignancy and humour. That’s probably the most significant way that the movie has managed to feed back into the comics.

Adam won the flick-knife fight (no real flick-knives were used in this faux altercation), and then he took us out to dinner at a restaurant that was designed by Walt Disney; it was like eating chips in Snow White’s cottage. The next day at MGM, we signed on the dotted line, chinked the glasses, smoked the cigars. The rest is history.

Whether Tank Girl would still exist as a comic without the cult popularity of the movie is an unknown. I’m certain that at least half of our readership is made up of people who came to Tank Girl through seeing the movie first – and then discovered that there is a whole continent of lunacy waiting to be explored through the books and comics.

The celluloid and paper versions of Tank Girl have now lived alongside each other for three decades, and whether you found the comics through the movie, or you found the movie through the comics, I hope you have fun tucking into this new high definition release with all of its bonus side-dishes. And then maybe you could try a few comics for pudding?”
