collapsed in the final hours of August 21–22. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered his negotiators home, saying the United States had introduced last-minute terms that were “unfair, uneconomic,” undermined net benefits to Canada, and called into question the reliability of any agreement. Carney later summarized the U.S. approach as having “asked too much and offered too little.”

Key sticking points, according to Canadian officials, included:

Changes to the scope of auto tariff relief (especially the exclusion of medium- and heavy-duty trucks).

Insufficient movement on steel, aluminum, and derivative products.

Language that would have restricted Canada’s ability to strike independent trade deals with third countries.

Issues around French-language and cultural protections, which Carney framed as threats to sovereignty.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer countered that Canada walked away from terms that had been progressing and that would have given Canada the best market access of any major exporter. Trump had briefly paused the new tariffs earlier in the week while documents were finalized; when the deal evaporated, 50% tariffs took effect on roughly $20–28 billion of Canadian goods.

Canada responded by announcing it would match the U.S. measures “dollar for dollar.” Retaliatory tariffs targeting steel, aluminum, dairy, household appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, electronics, and hundreds of other products are scheduled to begin around September 8 (with some later adjustments, including on seafood).

Sources

NYT: Canada-U.S. Trade War Escalates as Talks Collapse

POLITICO: Inside the 72 hours that cratered the US-Canada trade deal

CBC: Carney says the deal became untenable

Full text of Carney’s remarks (Prime Minister’s Office)

Bloomberg: Where the US-Canada Trade War Stands

The “Lake America” episode and public reaction

The political temperature rose further when Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” on U.S. maps. Google Maps began displaying the new label for some American users. Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed the move as “like something out of Saturday Night Live,” insisting the lake has been Ontario for hundreds of years and will remain so. Local businesses near Niagara Falls indicated they have no intention of changing signage or marketing.

In Canada the trade confrontation has, at least for now, galvanized public support behind Carney. Informal boycotts of U.S. goods and reduced cross-border travel have been widely reported. On the U.S. side, some border communities and industries (especially those dependent on Canadian electricity, potash, or integrated auto supply chains) are expressing concern about the economic fallout.

Sources

NYT Canada section coverage of Lake Ontario renaming and trade-war week

POLITICO: Ontario premier laughs off ‘Lake America’

NYT analysis: Carney Has Canadians’ Support on Trump. Now Comes the Hard Part

Economic stakes

Bilateral trade last year exceeded $800–880 billion. The new tariffs cover only a modest share of that total, but the two economies are deeply integrated—particularly in autos, energy, agriculture, and critical minerals. Economists warn that prolonged uncertainty could dampen investment and hit workers in targeted sectors even if the immediate GDP impact appears limited. Carmakers have largely stayed quiet so far despite the potential for broader auto tariffs later.

The US immediately imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20–28 billion of Canadian goods (about 5% of Canada’s exports to the US). On August 24, President Trump escalated by threatening 50% tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel effective January 1, 2027.

The near-deal (according to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer) would have cut Canadian car/light-truck tariffs from 25% toward 15% (potentially lower with US-content rules), reduced steel and aluminum tariffs, and eliminated a softwood lumber tariff. Canada rejected it, with Prime Minister Mark Carney calling the final U.S. terms “unfair, uneconomic,” and an “attack.” Canada will impose dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs starting September 8 on U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp/paper, electronics, and other goods.

Auto stocks fell on the news. Integrated North American supply chains mean higher costs and potential production disruptions on both sides. Canadian steel exports had already dropped sharply under prior tariffs.

Key sources:

BBC: US-Canada trade war heats up as Trump threatens to hike auto tariffs

Reuters: Trump threatens 50% tariffs on all cars and trucks from Canada

Reuters: US hits Canadian goods with 50% tariffs after trade talks fail

Reuters: Canada to retaliate… tariffs start September 8

CNN: Carney says US asked ‘too much, offered too little’

Politico: Carney bucks Trump as trade war escalates

Boston Globe: Trump’s top trade representative details offer that Canada refused

2. order.

The order directs Homeland Security (with Social Security Administration help) to create state-by-state lists of U.S. citizens and involves the Postal Service in limiting mail-ballot delivery to people on approved lists. The Justice Department is told to prioritize cases against officials who issue ballots to ineligible voters.

The Court said the states lacked standing in part because implementation details were still developing, but explicitly noted this does not mean future steps will be lawful. A separate nationwide injunction specifically blocking the Postal Service remains in place. Liberal justices dissented, warning of chaos before the midterms. Full implementation by November faces significant practical and legal hurdles.

Key sources:

New York Times: Justices Allow Plans to Restrict Mail Voting, for Now

Politico: Supreme Court lifts one block on Trump mail-in voting plan

Reuters: US Supreme Court hands a win to Trump over mail-in ballot restrictions

Votebeat: Supreme Court lifts 1 of 2 injunctions…

4. 190 active fires reported at one point, 73 of which were out of control). One of the largest fires, Thunder Bay 36, burned nearly 319,000 hectares. Multiple communities, including the Namaygoosisagagun (Collins) First Nation, were destroyed or placed under mandatory evacuation orders.

Smoke from these fires, along with some from Minnesota, drifted southward and created hazardous air quality across large parts of the northern and eastern United States. Major cities including New York City, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C., experienced reduced visibility, orange haze, and health alerts. Some outdoor events, including MLB games, were postponed.

In response, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on social media criticizing Canada’s forest management practices and threatened to impose new tariffs on Canadian goods, describing the smoke as an “invasion” of “filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air.” Ontario Premier Doug Ford rejected the criticism, stating that U.S. politicians had “a very short memory” and highlighting past instances where Canadian resources assisted American wildfire efforts, such as in California. Federal and provincial officials emphasized evidence-based forest management techniques.

Sources:

CBC News: Ford says U.S. politicians criticizing Canadian wildfire response have ‘a very short memory’

Toronto Star: Donald Trump threatens new tariffs on Canada over wildfire smoke

U.S. Vice President JD Vance participated, with mediators from Qatar and Pakistan involved. Following an interim memorandum of understanding signed the previous week, the parties agreed on a roadmap toward a permanent agreement within 60 days.

The U.S. Treasury issued a 60-day waiver on sanctions effective Monday, allowing Iran to sell oil and related products. Discussions included allowing nuclear inspectors, mechanisms for handling frozen assets, and ensuring safe passage for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Technical meetings are continuing this week. President Trump emphasized the need for weapons inspections and stated consequences if Iran does not comply. Iran’s side reported securing waivers for oil and petrochemical exports and some frozen asset releases but denied that nuclear program discussions had Rapid snowmelt from a heavy winter pack has already pushed water levels higher, and forecasters are warning of significant rainfall — between 50 and 90 millimetres, with localized amounts possibly exceeding 100 mm — expected to begin Saturday night and continue into next week. Town crews in Banff have proactively deployed sandbags and temporary dams around vulnerable areas like Birch Avenue and historic Rundle Cabin, while Canmore is strongly discouraging watercraft use on the river. Residents and visitors are urged to stay well back from riverbanks and steep creeks, where fast-moving water could cause sudden undercutting and unstable ground.

2. Saab’s advanced GlobalEye airborne early warning and control aircraft from Sweden instead of Boeing’s E-7 Wedgetail option from the United States. The GlobalEye, built on Bombardier’s Global 6500 platform, features sophisticated sensors designed to enhance surveillance over Canada’s vast Arctic territory. This decision reflects Ottawa’s push to reduce reliance on U.S. suppliers and take greater responsibility for monitoring its massive northern region. Saab has committed to investing in Canadian research and development as part of the deal, which military officials previously indicated could involve up to six aircraft. Experts view this as a key test of Canada’s strategy to diversify its defense partnerships, including stronger ties with Nordic countries.
