It is a warm afternoon in Los Angeles when I meet Jessica Marvisi. She is wearing silk Zimmermann trousers and a crisp, simple white T-shirt—the kind of outfit that looks almost accidental until you notice everything else. The jewelry, the shoes, the bag. Nothing is particularly loud, but everything feels considered.

Jessica and I first met at an EX NIHILO event in New York this past April, where we bonded over our shared love of fragrance. Her world is one of boarding school in Switzerland, fashion editorials, beauty GRWMs, and an almost unwavering commitment to romanticizing the everyday. On social media, she has turned that world into something distinctly her own: part personal diary, part moodboard, part very chic curriculum.

Over matcha, obviously, we talk about personal style, the Alaïa blazer she bought with some of the first money she made, why school deserves to be romanticized, and the Dior wedding dress she is already manifesting into existence.

What are you wearing right now?

I’m wearing Zimmermann silk pants with a COS white T-shirt.

What’s something you will always spend money on?

Matcha. I love a good matcha—morning, night. I even had a matcha last night at 9 p.m.!

And something you will never spend money on?

I think just tacky things that I don’t find appealing. Trends such as Labubus, or just trendy things that I don’t see value in.

What was your first big fashion purchase?

With my own money?

Of course. You can tell the whole story.

Okay—so last year, I started making my own money when I started doing social media. I’ve loved it because I’ve been able to be so creative and express who I really am through my digital platform.

My dad got me these Alaïa pants, and they are so sick. They kind of remind me of the genie from—what’s it called?

Aladdin?

Aladdin! They’re kind of like balloon pants. They’re so pretty.

But they had a matching tuxedo-style blazer, so I spent some of the first money I made on the Alaïa blazer. It’s so pretty and feels one of a kind. I’ve only worn it once, to a magazine party during New York Fashion Week.

I wore no shirt underneath, so there was a little cleavage, but it was very chic and sexy. So many people complimented me on it.

What’s your one beauty non-negotiable?

I think facials. They’re very important to remove everything, hydrate, and help you heal your skin from within.

But also, everything that you put into your body shows on your skin. Just taking care of yourself is a non-negotiable for beauty.

What’s something you loved before everyone else did?

Oh, that is a cool question. I would probably say romanticizing school. I’ve always been obsessed with making school and studying feel chic and exciting, especially because you can feel so bored and tired.

I don’t see people romanticizing school as much, and it became a big aesthetic online for me. I think going to boarding school in Switzerland really started that.

Being international and being around people who have different opinions helped me form my own opinion. I think romanticizing the little things in life is so cute. It makes the days go by faster.

That is actually the perfect link to the next question. What are you romanticizing in your life right now?

Oh, I think there are so many things.

Maybe my manifestations.

I was literally thinking you were going to say that, as we were just talking about it.

Yes, absolutely. I love to romanticize my life in general, which leads to my manifestations. I romanticize my social media career all the time.

I feel like romanticizing life is essential to being happy. If you romanticize, you also dream, which means your manifestations are in an even higher power.

What is the Jessica Marvisi signature outfit?

I think essentially what I’m wearing right now: a COS white T-shirt and Zimmermann bottoms.

Very you.

Yes, I think Zimmermann is my number-one brand.

But if I had a dream outfit, it would probably be something Dior. Jonathan Anderson is one of a kind and my favorite designer ever.

He will be making my wedding dress. I’m writing this down now.

Manifesting it into existence.

Exactly.

I think he’s so creative and special, and everything he does has some sort of significance and meaning behind it. That feels very rare right now because sometimes clothing is just clothing and not art.

Whenever I see his pieces, I feel so touched because there is always meaning behind them. There’s always a symbol behind Dior. Whenever I think of a ladybug, I think of Dior.

Anything he makes, I would be honored to have on my body. So I’m going to say that’s my go-to outfit—because we’re manifesting it for life.

Heels.

Vintage or new?

Vintage is nice, but I have to go with new. There are so many new, fun things, and I’m always looking forward to the future.

I also think new is always developing from vintage, so there will always be a take on vintage. But I have to go with new.

Cocktail or wine?

Cocktail when I’m out with my friends and we’re going to have a crazy night. Wine when I’m having a slow, girl-dinner kind of vibe.

Drink of choice?

Cocktail, I’ll have to go with a pornstar martini. I love passion fruit.

Morning.

Minimalist or maximalist?

A mix of both.

One fashion house forever?

Do I have to say it?

I think we already know.

One person whose closet you’d steal?.

I would say Sofia Richie because she mixes a lot of different styles together, but she still has her own unique style. I think I see myself in that.

My red heart, but it’s not the regular red heart. It’s the card red heart ♥️

Heaven Mayhem school accessories because I want to buy their new computer case.

I’m going back to school soon at NYU, so I’m excited to stock up on my Heaven supply.

What should I know about you that I would never think to ask?

This is kind of random, but I remember different periods of my life by what school I was in rather than what year it was.

I’ve gone to school in different countries and cities, so each school feels like its own little chapter of my life. I think that’s probably why I’m so sentimental about school.

Which has me wondering - is it the thin sexy, barely-there black sandal, or the thrill of that twist?

That unexpected turn comes down to embracing the look - even if quietly doubtful as you step out of your place.

Another fashion royal who comes to mind, effortlessly mastering this art, is none other than Alexa Chung - and she’s never looked back…

These open-toe heels have me wondering: did she choose them to purposely match the interior of her breathtaking red coat… or, in true Alexa fashion, was it an unexpected - yet perfectly delightful - surprise that paired with her Manolos? Either way, it’s an undeniable win.

Another classic example - fusing the feminine with the masculine.

The blush-pink lace skirt, paused by her kilometre-long legs, is interrupted at first by what appears to be an “ugly” black dad shoe - yet it’s exactly this that makes you stare for more than five seconds and stop scrolling.

Not a personal fan of dad shoes myself (or sneakers, really), but this look? It’s taken a toll on me.

So… is it the outfit itself, or the art of wearing the wrong shoe?

As I keep building my case further and further, I realize that this art is rooted in the complete destruction of what’s expected - or established.

A clash in texture.

Add feathers! Different materials! Fabrics! Hair! Feel…

This hit that spot, putting an end to the all-too-Instagrammable look of a burgundy tight paired with an unexpected feathered shoe.

Exhibit E

In this case, a French-inspired, very formal outfit is completely interrupted - even destroyed - by an unexpected bright green (weekend-with-the-kids) shoe.

Has me speculating: was that her intention? Did she realize too late that her outfit was overdressed? Or did she simply have errands to run and want to be comfortable?

And once again, this proves how the art of the unexpected shoe captivates - making you pause, reconsider someone’s footwear choice, and even question it.

After eight exhibits and plenty of proof (and, I’m sure, a few realizations), I think I have made my case.

And while I have never been too fond of how pinks look on me, I have to admit this pairing has me wandering into Rhode’s coquette corner, lusting after their piggy-pink tones.

The fall loafer: a perennial classic, returning each season with the quiet ambition of becoming the shoe of your wardrobe. . My favorites? Chanel’s timeless pair, Jacquemus’ sharp “Le Carré,” and Coach’s sleek loafers.
