As an extension of Jamaica’s Independence celebrations, our evening became something more intimate: a celebration of Jamaican women who carry with them a strong sense of presence, identity, and purpose, and whose lives remind us that the story of a nation is also written in the lives of the women who nurture its people.

It was a wonderful evening spent in the company of two beautiful Jamaican women, sharing stories, memories, laughter, and reflections gathered over the years: Denise Katz, our former Mrs. Jamaica, and Shirley Hanna, mother of our Miss World, Lisa Hanna.

In some ways, their stories offered two distinctive expressions of Jamaican womanhood. Denise once wore the crown of Mrs. Jamaica and went on to become one of the 15 finalists selected from 70 contestants at the Mrs. World competition in Hawaii. Shirley is the mother of Lisa Hanna, our Miss Jamaica, who went on to represent Jamaica at the Miss World competition in South Africa and ultimately be crowned Miss World.

One woman wore the crown herself; the other experienced a different kind of crowning through the daughter she raised and the values she instilled in her.

Shirley then shared a particularly poignant story from that experience. At just 18, Lisa spoke so warmly and confidently about the integrity, values, and principles her mother had passed on to her that, following her crowning as Miss World, the officials felt compelled to meet the woman behind the daughter.

I can only imagine the pride Shirley must have felt in that moment.

Perhaps, in some profound way, it was the moment when motherhood itself was crowned.

There are moments when a mother’s influence reaches far beyond the walls of home, reflected in the character of the children she has raised and the values they carry into the world. Beyond the pageant stage, Shirley represented something much larger than herself: the countless mothers in Jamaica and around the world whose love, sacrifice, wisdom, and unwavering belief help foster the qualities that remain with their children throughout their lives. It is a language that needs no translation, reaching across borders, cultures, and circumstances.

The greatest inheritance we can leave behind lives beyond what we can hold in our hands, in what we carry in our hearts: the way we care for one another, the respect we show, the loyalty we keep, and, above all, the character we help shape in those who come after us. In ways we may never fully see, those timeless gifts travel forward, finding their way into lives we may never know.

As Jamaica celebrated her 64th birthday, those sentiments felt especially meaningful. Shirley’s own love for Jamaica, and the time she dedicated in her youth to making the country a better place for all, reminded me that patriotism is not always found in grand declarations. Sometimes it is simply found in a life lived with purpose, generosity, and a willingness to give something back.

Shirley speaks with a natural joy and an effervescent smile, the passion for life still twinkling in her eyes. And there was something especially tender in the way she spoke of Louis, Denise’s son, now all grown up beside her in the photograph. She remembered the little boy she had known so fondly, recalling those moments when they shared in caring for him as he grew.

Time has a way of revealing the beauty of such memories. The little children we once watched over eventually become adults, carrying forward the lessons and love that surrounded them. Lisa, whose own journey led her to become Miss World, has now watched her son grow within the same strong values she learned from her mother. And Denise’s son, too, has grown into a fine young man, carrying with him the love and guidance of those who helped shape his early years. Together, their stories offer a powerful reminder that raising a child is also an act of planting the future.

Somewhere in the midst of that evening, and as I later wrote about it, my own mother came to mind. The love and sacrifices she has made, and continues to make, for my siblings and me have become part of who we are in ways we could never fully put into words. There is something about listening to women speak of motherhood that makes us look back and pause, appreciating anew the many ways a mother gives of herself, often without asking to be seen, acknowledged, or thanked.

And therein lies one of the most beautiful threads woven through their lives: what we give to the next generation does not end with our own children. It travels forward, from mother to daughter, from mother to son, from grandmother to grandchild, becoming part of a living legacy of love, values, and identity.

The gathering that evening felt unmistakably Jamaican—good conversation, laughter, and, of course, good food. We enjoyed a delicious meal at the ever-popular Dukunoo Jamaica Kitchen in Miami’s vibrant Wynwood Arts District, accompanied by a cold Red Stripe and some wonderfully tender barbecue.

And, of course, there was Mark Cameron, the Renaissance man himself, making sure we were taken care of from start to finish. The perfect finale was a Jamaican bread pudding infused with Jamaican rum—just the right indulgence to bring the evening to a close.

The rum-infused pudding was then briefly set aflame at the table, releasing the warm aroma of rum and adding a little theatre to an already delicious ending.

Good food, wonderful stories, laughter, memories, and the company of gracious Jamaican women whose lives have touched others.

I could not have asked for more.

That, perhaps, is what celebrations of independence are ultimately about: not simply remembering the nation we inherited, but recognizing the people who helped make us who we are, cherishing the values that bind us together, and asking what we will pass on to those who come after us.

For in the end, nations are built not only by the leaders who stand before us, but by the mothers, fathers, families, and communities who quietly shape the generations yet to come. May we continue to honour that inheritance, and may the Jamaica we leave behind reflect the love, sacrifice, and devotion with which generations of her people have nurtured our island home. 🇯🇲

Some evenings stay with us long after the plates have been cleared and the conversation has ended. This was one of them.

What began as an evening of Jamaican Independence celebration became, for me, a deeper reflection on the women whose lives, choices, love, and values leave an imprint on those who come after them. I am grateful to Denise and Shirley for sharing their stories, their memories, and something of the journeys that brought them to that table.

This piece is my personal reflection on an evening that reminded me that while some crowns are placed upon our heads, the most enduring ones are found in the legacies we leave in the hearts and lives of others.

The longer I wandered through artist Stephen G. Taylor’s workspace, the more I realized I was exploring far more than the tools of creation, the unfinished works still evolving toward their final form, or the completed paintings already revealing their own stories. The studio itself became a living language, inviting me to look beyond what was visible.

As a lover of literature, I found familiar literary devices taking on physical form. Metaphors seemed to hang upon the walls, while color, texture, and unfinished sketches became pages from a writer’s notebook—fragments of imagination waiting to become something whole. Imagery lingered in every corner, as though the room itself were telling stories without ever speaking a word.

Photography, too, has shaped the way I see the world. Light and shadow danced together in subtle chiaroscuro. Composition naturally drew the eye. The rule of thirds appeared almost instinctively. Yet what captivated me most was not only what had been placed within the frame, but what had been intentionally left beyond it. Like reading between the lines of a well-loved book, I found myself wondering what absence was meant to reveal, and why every artist chooses where a story begins—and where it gently fades from view.

Compelled to see beyond the canvas, I traced the artist’s footsteps to where the streets of Chinatown merge into Little Italy in Manhattan. It was there that one of the paintings now hanging before me first took shape. I discovered that the man Stephen portrayed had spent nearly four decades working at that very restaurant, enjoying a coffee break when an ordinary moment became an enduring work of art. Knowing that he had devoted so many years to that familiar place transformed the way I saw the painting. It no longer depicted a stranger, but a life patiently lived, woven into the rhythm of the neighborhood and the memories it still holds. I also learned that he had recently passed away—a man remembered with deep affection by those who knew him. Suddenly, the painting became more than a beautifully composed image. It became a poignant tribute to a treasured life, reminding me that great art does not merely preserve a moment in time; it preserves the humanity within it, allowing a single life to continue speaking long after it has passed beyond the frame.

The exchange with Stephen deepened as he shared the creative process behind his paintings. Standing beside each canvas, he spoke less about technique than about the questions, observations, and moments of wonder that had lingered long before paint ever touched the canvas. Each work revealed itself as more than an image; it emerged from careful seeing, thoughtful reflection, and lived experience. In those moments, I realized that every painting begins long before the first brushstroke. With every conversation, the studio became less a room filled with paintings and more a landscape of memory, curiosity, and artistic discovery.

I left realizing that an artist’s workspace is never simply where art is made. It is where seeing itself is refined—where observation becomes reflection, and reflection gradually becomes another work of art. What I carried away was the lasting conviction that every artist’s studio is, in its own way, a self-portrait, revealing not only the creations that emerge there but the mind, heart, and vision that continue to bring them into being.

Perhaps every artist’s studio is its own kind of window, opening onto new ways of seeing the world—and ourselves.

Before there was silence, there was light. Before there was ruin, there was beauty. Before Hurricane Melissa carried away her gate and walls, Waterloo stood beneath skies that seemed to bless her one final evening.

Let us pause just for a moment to remember.

For more than two centuries, Waterloo stood as one of Black River’s most treasured landmarks—a quiet keeper of our collective memory. To those who walked its halls, lingered on its verandas, or simply passed through its gate, it offered something beyond architecture.

It offered belonging.

Its graceful lace fretwork, carved into wood like poetry, spoke of a time when craftsmanship was an expression of love and beauty was woven into everyday life. Every beam, every veranda, every carefully shaped detail reminded us that progress and elegance can live side by side.

And here, on historic High Street, Waterloo witnessed one of Jamaica’s defining moments.

In 1893, Black River became the first town in Jamaica to receive electricity, placing this small riverside community among the early pioneers of electric lighting in the Western Hemisphere. That remarkable achievement transformed Black River into more than a town. It became proof that even a small town can become a beacon for a nation.

Yet Waterloo was always more than history. For me, it became a place of memory—a gift I never knew I had been given until it was taken from us.

Within its walls lived generations of laughter and labor, celebration and sorrow. Countless footsteps softened the polished wooden floors. Evening conversations drifted through the open verandas on the cool breeze from the bay. Children grew. Families gathered. Lives unfolded.

And then, only a few months before Hurricane Melissa delivered its fatal blow, my dear friend Sharon and I spent a memorable night at Waterloo. As twilight settled over Black River, we found ourselves on its enchanting wraparound veranda, Caribbean cocktails in hand, raising a quiet toast to another glorious sunset over the bay, to enduring friendship, and to Waterloo herself. The cool evening breeze drifted through the fretwork as the last light of day wrapped the old house in gold. We talked, laughed, and lingered without the slightest sense of urgency, sharing old stories as the lights of Black River slowly flickered to life across the bay. It was one of those rare evenings when time itself seemed to slow, as though the old house was reluctant to let the moment slip away.

There was an almost sacred stillness to the evening. Waterloo had become something far greater than a historic house. It felt alive, with a warmth, grace, and timeless hospitality that only places steeped in memory can offer.

Looking back now, I realize we were not merely sharing cocktails on a veranda. We were unknowingly gathering one last memory beneath Waterloo’s gracious roof before the winds carried it away. What seemed so timeless that evening would, in only a matter of months, become one of the memories I would cherish most.

I would never pass through Waterloo’s gate again.

When I returned, that evening belonged only to memory. The veranda where we had lingered was gone, and the gate through which we had entered had vanished into the storm.

Even its gate seemed to understand its purpose. Through the passing years, it stood patiently, welcoming each arrival as though it already knew they belonged.

Then came the call.

“I can’t even find the gate, Kevin.”

Victor’s trembling voice carried more than words.

It carried the weight of loss.

In that instant, something inside me hollowed.

The gate—that faithful sentinel which had welcomed generations and stood watch over Waterloo for decades—had vanished.

Gone.

As Hurricane Melissa swept across Black River, it carried away more than timber and iron. It swept away a threshold through which memory itself seemed to pass.

Where there had once been welcome…

there was absence.

Sometimes a photograph speaks where language falls silent.

The ruins before us are far more than broken walls and splintered timber.

They are interrupted conversations.
Unfinished stories.
A chapter of Jamaica’s heritage scattered across the earth.

I looked upon the fallen beams and found myself wondering…

Which piece had once framed a family portrait?

Which weathered plank had echoed with children’s footsteps?

Which veranda had watched another golden Caribbean sunset?

Even in fragments, Waterloo was still telling her story.

And perhaps that is what heritage truly is.

It is not wood.
It is not stone.
It is not nails.

It is the story handed down through time, surviving even the fiercest storms.

Places like Waterloo give those stories a home, where they can be seen, shared, and remembered.

We must not forfeit the architectural integrity of this remarkable place, nor the beauty it embodied, nor the legacy it has bequeathed to us.

To restore Waterloo is to reclaim a piece of Jamaica’s soul.

So let us not turn away in despair.

Let us gather every fragment—

stone,

story,

and spirit.

Let us rebuild because something priceless now rests in our care.

Restoration is the sacred work of carrying forward a living inheritance, allowing the spirit of a place to breathe again through the hands and hearts of another generation.

For heritage is not only what survives the storm.
Heritage is what survives within us.

They may level walls, but they cannot level love.

History does not end in ruin.
It bends toward rebirth.

More than a century ago, Black River helped illuminate Jamaica with electric light.

Today, we have another opportunity to illuminate how a nation remembers, restores, and honors its inheritance.

And when the gate finally fell, it did not close Waterloo’s story.

It entrusted that story to us.

May we prove worthy of the inheritance we have received.

The water does not move. It holds what remains of the house, as though memory itself were unwilling to let it go.

Lavender walls, broken and half-standing, sit suspended in a shallow mirror. The reflection is steadier than the structure itself, as though the past now survives more clearly in memory than in matter. Around it, trees stand stripped and splintered, their limbs twisted into the air, as if something had been interrupted mid-sentence.

I remember it whole.

The red roof pitched sharply against the sky. The white fretwork tracing along the veranda. The lilac base grounding it, familiar and unassuming. It did not demand attention; it endured, absorbing years, generations, and the slow layering of lives within its walls.

This was the Jewish House of Black River.

Once a family home, then a lawyer’s office, and later a daycare, it carried more than function; it carried continuity across generations. Above the doorway once rested the Star of David, weathered and elevated above the iron bars that guarded the entrance, held between lines of delicate fretwork. For generations, it stood as a silent witness to the lives that passed beneath its gaze, a steadfast marker of a history that reaches back centuries, to a time when Jewish communities found refuge and root here in Jamaica. Today, the Star has not yet been found. Hidden somewhere beneath the rubble, it awaits rediscovery—a small but enduring fragment of a history that still calls to be remembered.

This was never just a house. It was a living record of those who passed through this island, and those who made it home.

Now it lies open. Stone scattered. Timber split. The shoreline no longer holds its shape. What once stood with certainty now exists in fragments, its outline broken, its purpose undone.

Hurricane Melissa did not simply pass through.

It unmade.

Standing here, there is dislocation. The mind resists what the eye accepts. Where there was structure, there is absence. Where there was memory anchored in place, there is only dispersal. The loss reaches beyond the building itself. Something less visible was held within these walls—something that cannot be gathered from debris.

And yet, the sky softens.

A pale blue stretches beneath a heavy bank of cloud, edged in muted gold. The light rests gently on the water, on the broken walls, on what remains. It offers no restoration, yet neither does it withdraw.

In this shattered landscape, hope does not shout; it whispers:
in color that refuses to dull,
in steps that remember where they once led,
in the quiet insistence that this is not the end.

The house is gone. But what it held—its history, its stories, its presence—has not vanished. Its reflection still lingers upon the water, while somewhere beneath the rubble the Star of David lies. Together, they remind us that memory endures and that what history buries is not always lost forever.

”Culture is not a luxury; it is an essential part of human development.” — Rex Nettleford

The controversy surrounding the remake of Jamaica’s beloved folk classic, Hill and Gully Ride, has sparked a wider national conversation about dancehall lyrics, cultural heritage, and social responsibility. For many Jamaicans, the remake represents more than a provocative song. Its sexually explicit lyrics are viewed as a desecration of a cherished cultural artifact and the values traditionally associated with it.

A recent episode of All Angles, hosted by veteran journalist Dionne Jackson Miller, sought to explore this controversy. While the topic itself was important and timely, I found the discussion somewhat frustrating. Guests frequently interrupted and spoke over one another, making it difficult for important ideas to be fully developed. By the program’s conclusion, one of the most significant questions raised had gone unanswered, partly because time had been consumed by exchanges and intellectual gymnastics that generated more heat than light.

Nevertheless, I came away from the discussion with one overriding conclusion: the most effective response is cultivation, not condemnation.

I fully understand the concerns expressed by Fae Ellington and other cultural advocates. Yet in moments of moral concern, criticism can easily be perceived as puritanical, elitist, or disconnected from the realities of popular culture. Given dancehall’s rebellious and anti-establishment character, such approaches often produce the opposite of their intended effect. Conversations can quickly shift from the substance of the lyrics to debates about censorship, class prejudice, and cultural authenticity.

What is needed is a more constructive—and ultimately more effective—approach.

The question should not be whether dancehall should cease being edgy, provocative, or authentic. Rather, the question is whether artists can be encouraged to be more inventive, insightful, and profound without relying so heavily on sexual explicitness or degrading themes.

Cultivation requires three things: education, incentives, and engagement.

Education equips listeners, especially young people, with the tools to think critically about the media they consume. As an educator, this aspect is especially important to me. Young people should learn to analyze lyrics rather than merely absorb them. The goal is not to tell them what to think, but to teach them how to think about what they hear.

Incentives matter as well. Instead of focusing exclusively on condemning negative content, we should actively reward positive content. Artists whose work demonstrates creativity, storytelling, social insight, wit, romance, resilience, and community upliftment should receive greater recognition and support. Radio stations, festivals, sponsors, schools, and community organizations can all play a role in creating a cultural marketplace that values substance alongside entertainment.

Engagement is equally important. Conversations with artists about legacy, influence, and cultural impact are often far more productive than public scolding or demands for censorship. Many artists are already aware of the influence they wield and are capable of reflecting seriously on the messages they choose to amplify.

I witnessed an encouraging example of this recently at a dancehall event in Kingston. As anticipation built for the controversial Hill and Gully remake, the DJ paused and announced, “We’re keeping it clean.” When the rhythm dropped, the packed venue erupted in excitement and continued enjoying the song without the explicit lyrics. It was a simple yet noteworthy example of social responsibility emerging organically from within dancehall culture itself—something worthy of recognition and praise.

Defenders of slack lyrics often argue that artists merely reflect social realities rather than create them. There is certainly some truth in that position. Art frequently serves as a mirror of society. Yet cultural influence is rarely a one-way process. Artists both reflect and shape the world around them. Culture influences society even as society influences culture.

This brings me to one of the most important questions raised during the discussion. Near the end of the program, popular television personality Oral Tracey asked whether it would make any difference to society if dancehall artists stopped producing slack lyrics. Dr. Sonjah Stanley Niaah of the Department of Cultural Studies at UWI described it as an excellent question, but unfortunately the program ended before it could be meaningfully explored.

It is indeed an important question. However, it carries an unspoken assumption: that artistic expression has little meaningful influence on society. That assumption deserves closer examination.

No serious society believes that repeated messages, imagery, language, and themes are entirely without influence, particularly when they are amplified continuously through music, media, and popular culture.

This does not mean dancehall is solely responsible for violence, misogyny, or broader social problems. Human behaviour is shaped by a complex web of social, economic, familial, educational, and cultural influences. To blame dancehall alone would be simplistic.

However, to dismiss the influence that prominent artists wield over attitudes, values, and social norms—and the responsibility that accompanies such influence—would be equally simplistic and ultimately irresponsible.

Music does not determine individual actions, but it contributes to the cultural environment in which attitudes, values, aspirations, and social norms are formed, reinforced, and transmitted over time. That is precisely why music has historically inspired spiritual movements, political resistance, national pride, love, unity, and transformative social change.

If we acknowledge that music can uplift and positively influence society, then we must also acknowledge that it can do the opposite.

The question, therefore, is not simply whether lyrics make a difference.

The deeper question is:

What kind of culture are we helping to normalize through what we repeatedly celebrate, reward, and consume?

This essay does not advocate censorship, nor does it seek to diminish dancehall’s immense cultural contributions. Rather, it is an invitation to consider the relationship between artistic freedom and social responsibility, and how societies might encourage cultural excellence through education, engagement, and positive incentives rather than condemnation alone.

I want to preface this by saying that this piece came about because, while living in the Middle East, I once read the confessions of a Turkish officer caught in an endless cycle of violence and the terrible psychological toll it had taken on him. His words stayed with me long afterward, because they revealed not simply the actions of a policeman, but the slow erosion of the human spirit beneath constant fear, aggression, and trauma.

If I were to live for a day in the life of a Jamaican police officer, I imagine I would come away carrying a complicated and exhausting emotional burden, one made of fear, vigilance, frustration, pride, trauma, and often loneliness.

Deep down, many officers likely feel that every interaction carries uncertainty. A routine stop could suddenly become lethal. A domestic dispute could turn into gunfire. A young man approaching quickly may be frightened or armed. In a society where violence can erupt suddenly and where illegal firearms are widespread, many officers likely live in a near-constant state of alertness. That level of hypervigilance changes people psychologically over time.

Yet alongside that fear is another burden: the knowledge that the public may already distrust or resent them before they even speak. In Jamaica, where police shootings and allegations of abuse have deeply scarred communities, many citizens see the police not as protectors but as a threat. An officer may therefore feel caught in a painful contradiction, expected to confront violent criminals while also being condemned when force is used, especially when innocent lives are lost.

Some officers likely harden emotionally as a means of survival. Repeated exposure to murder scenes, grieving families, gang reprisals, abused children, and human cruelty can slowly erode the gentler parts of a person. What the public sometimes interprets as coldness may, in part, be emotional armour. Not because every action is justified — it certainly is not — but because constant exposure to danger and trauma can narrow a person’s emotional world.

At the same time, there are likely officers who carry genuine moral conflict within themselves. Many probably entered policing wanting to serve communities, yet find themselves working within systems strained by corruption, public mistrust, political pressure, limited resources, and cycles of violence that seem endless. Imagine having to make split-second decisions while knowing that one mistake could end a civilian’s life, your own life, or permanently stain your conscience.

None of this should suggest that my Jamaica is a society devoid of beauty, warmth, humanity, or joy. Anyone who truly knows Jamaica also knows its laughter, resilience, creativity, spirituality, and deep sense of community. Yet it is precisely because there is so much worth protecting that the tragedy of violence cuts so deeply into our national psyche.

There is also exhaustion, not merely physical exhaustion from long shifts and danger, but spiritual exhaustion: the feeling of confronting the same violence repeatedly without ever seeing society fundamentally heal. Jamaica’s violence is not solely a policing issue; it is deeply tied to poverty, trauma, inequality, organized crime, fractured communities, and historical wounds. Police officers stand at the frontline of those fractures every day.

And beneath all of this, there may be fears few openly admit:
fear of dying,
fear of making the wrong call,
fear of becoming emotionally hardened,
fear of being hated,
and fear of carrying memories they can never fully escape.

None of this erases the reality that innocent people may suffer unjustly or even die at the hands of police. Accountability remains essential in any democratic society. But understanding the emotional world of officers may help us better understand how policing within a deeply violent environment can psychologically deform not only the police, but the society around them.

In many ways, both civilians and police in Jamaica are living beneath the same atmosphere of fear — only from different sides of it.

This piece is not an attempt to excuse abuse, brutality, or the unjust loss of innocent lives. Accountability remains essential in any democratic society. Rather, it is an attempt to reflect on the often unseen psychological burden carried by those who police within deeply violent environments, and how fear itself can shape both institutions and societies.

The man in the photograph is called Baisie.

At first glance, you see a body shaped by years of labor—lean, sinewy. His skin bears the marks of sun and time. A soft grey beard frames his mouth, unruly yet dignified, and his tightly curled hair has surrendered to age without apology.

But it is his eyes that hold you. Light, almost blue-grey, and unwavering. They are not the eyes of a defeated man. They are steady, searching, carrying a settled knowing. They speak of a life that has faced hardship without illusion and endured it all the same.

This is Baisie, from Treasure Beach, Jamaica, where the sea is never far and the wind is never fully at rest, a man who lost his roof during Hurricane Melissa.

After the storm passed, when the winds had stripped away what little he had, Baisie borrowed sheets of zinc from his sister, materials she had set aside to build her own home. He used them to cover what remained of his.

But what he did next is what sets his story apart.

He did not nail them down.

Instead, he placed stones on top of the zinc sheets to hold them in place.

At first, it seems strange, impractical even.
How could someone, after losing so much, choose such an uncertain way to rebuild?

But when asked why, Baisie did not elaborate or defend himself. He simply said:

“Mi cyaa nail dem dung because is borrow a borrow dem; mi have to give dem back when mi sista ready.”

They were borrowed. They would have to be returned.

“A borrow is a borrow.”

They were not nailed because they were not his to claim.

What first seemed strange takes on a different weight. Here is a man who, even in the wake of loss, after the wind has taken his roof, his comfort, his security, refuses to take what is not his.

There is a kind of strength in Baisie that does not announce itself loudly. It does not boast or demand attention. It lives simply in decisions like this, in the refusal to compromise what is right, even when survival might seem to justify it.

His face, lined and weathered, tells the story of struggle. But his eyes tell another: one of endurance, of something held firmly within.

Baisie may have lost his roof in the storm, but he did not lose himself.

His integrity remained intact.
The winds could not carry it away.

Reflecting on Easter and the traditions of home in Jamaica, I find that beyond the sacred stillness of church services, the soft glow of candles beside carefully placed religious iconography, and the flame burning steadily in the calm of the room, there exists another layer of meaning: one woven not only from scripture, but from story, memory, and the unspoken inheritance of family tradition.

Easter in Jamaica was never only observed; it was lived. It arrived in church pews and solemn hymns, but also in kitchens fragrant with spice, in old stories repeated each year, in simple meals set upon the table, and in the small rituals that made the season feel touched by something larger than ourselves.

Good Friday has long carried a hush about it, a reverent pause where belief and imagination meet in simple, symbolic acts.

One tradition from my childhood returns with particular clarity, both thrilling and edged with unease. It began the night before, when an egg white was dropped into a glass of water and left undisturbed, often perched atop the zinc cover of our water tank, waiting for the first light of morning. At dawn, we gathered around, equal parts excitement and apprehension, watching as the light revealed delicate, shifting forms suspended in the water.

What we saw was never just shape; it was story. A ship, a plane, sometimes something in between. Each figure invited interpretation, a murmur of what might be. Children and adults alike leaned in, offering their readings, their hopes, their playful certainties. Yet always, lingering at the edge of our imagination, were the darker tellings—the man who once saw a coffin and not long after died, or the rare and troubling shape of a rope drawn into a noose, bearing its own trepidation. Those stories lived among us, unspoken but ever-present, holding us in a moment of breathless suspense.

And in my own reading of it, truth be told, I only ever found ships, or something drifting between a ship and a plane. Still, the relief of seeing neither coffin nor noose was always real, almost physical—as though I had stepped back from an unseen threshold.

Then, as the day unfolded and the sun climbed to its peak, another ritual awaited. Near my grandparents’ home stood a tree in Mr. Harriot’s yard, known to us simply as the “bleeding tree.” It was said that if its bark were cut at exactly midday on Good Friday, the tree would bleed instead of its usual pale sap. We gathered there, drawn by equal parts curiosity and reverence, watching closely as the blade met the trunk.

For many, it was more than spectacle. It was symbol—a living echo of the crucifixion, the earth itself bearing witness. Whether miracle or myth, it carried weight, a solemn gravity settling over us in that noon hour.

Yet Easter was more than mystery and folklore. It was also taste, scent, and the familiar happiness of returning each year to what we knew would be waiting for us.

There was, of course, the much-loved tradition of bun and cheese. In Jamaica, Easter is celebrated as much around the table as it is in church, and across the island families share Easter buns paired with thick slices of cheese. But in our family, no store-bought bun could ever rival Aunt Nellie’s.

Her homemade buns were what we eagerly awaited each year. Warm from the oven and rich with spice, they filled the house with the scent of cinnamon, nutmeg, and dried fruit long before reaching the table. Dense yet tender, dark with stout and molasses, studded with raisins and glistening pieces of fruit, they seemed to hold within them not only flavour, but memory itself.

Then came the cheese—a thick slice of creamy Jamaican cheddar laid between two generous pieces of bun. The sharp, salty bite cut through the deep sweetness with that perfect balance only Easter seems to know: sweet and salty, soft and firm, familiar and longed for.

On the plate, it became more than food. The slices rested close together, the golden cheese nestled between layers of dark, fragrant bun, and somehow it told the story of our family better than words could. Year after year, Aunt Nellie outdid herself, each bun an act of love, each loaf a reminder that tradition is not only inherited, but made and remade by the hands of those who care for us.

If bun and cheese belonged to the warmth of Easter and the happiness of family gathered together, Good Friday had its own meal, simpler, more restrained, touched by reflection.

There was always fried fish and bammy.

My mother’s fried fish, golden and crisp, was lightly dressed with rings of onion and a Scotch bonnet pepper set carefully on top. Beside it lay toasted bammy, made from cassava, plain and humble, often broken by hand rather than cut. In its simplicity, there was something deeply moving. The bammy felt almost like bread shared in silence, a quiet reminder of sacrifice, togetherness, and the sacredness hidden within the ordinary.

Even the table carried its own beauty. Easter lilies, cut from our garden and placed in vases around the house, gently marked the season. And there, beside the plate, one would rest, its bloom lifting the meal beyond the everyday, filling it with a soft sense of reverence and renewal. Something grown, gathered, and brought inside, where faith and home meet without separation.

Together, the fish, the bammy, the flower, and the reverence of the day seemed to speak in harmony.

And somewhere nearby, as the afternoon light softened, the candle before the icon continued to burn. Beside it, the white rose, cut from our garden, rested there, carrying more than its beauty. It gathered within it a deeper meaning: purity, remembrance, and the gentle hope of resurrection, but also continuity—something tended, grown, and passed on. In it, I feel my mother’s presence, her care made visible in bloom. It does not speak loudly; it does not need to. Its presence alone is enough, a living bridge between devotion, home, and renewal.

And then, almost as if in measured response to the restraint of Easter, the island turns toward colour and movement. In the days that follow, Carnival emerges—vivid, rhythmic, alive with music and motion. Where Good Friday holds a hush, Carnival releases it, carrying a different kind of expression, yet born from the same human need to gather, to feel, to belong.

Some of these traditions have faded now, existing mostly in memory—the egg white left to form its mysterious shapes, the midday cutting of the bleeding tree. They belong to another time, carried more in story than in practice. Yet much remains, alive and present: the sharing of bun and cheese, the familiar preparation of fried fish and bammy, the gathering of family around the table. These are not memories alone, but living traditions, stitched into the fabric of who we are—reminders that Easter in Jamaica was never confined to solemn observance, nor to celebration alone. It was the joining of both: faith and folklore, mystery and meal, the sacred and the everyday.

And even now, when Easter returns, so too do those moments: the flicker of candlelight before an icon, the anxious glance into a glass of water, the taste of Aunt Nellie’s bun and cheese, the plain grace of fish and bammy.

They rise within me like shapes in water at first light—fragile, shifting, and enduring.

The deafening silence of a hollowed space lingers where laughter once danced with the sea breeze. The restaurant and lounge, Las Vegas, once alive with music, clinking glasses, and the hum of evening conversation, now stands stripped bare by Hurricane Melissa’s rage.

I remember it differently.

A warm afternoon, sunlight spilling across that familiar spot, the bar alive with easy chatter and unguarded smiles. Along Crane Road, a long, narrow stretch where villas and small restaurants once faced the sea on one side and mangroves held the other, leading toward the old bridge and into Black River’s High Street, we leaned in close for a photo, not thinking of time or endings, held only in a simple human moment of being. Behind us, bottles of spirits lined the shelves, waiting to be chosen, celebrations on hold, friendships deepening, memories quietly forming. The air carried laughter, possibility, and the unspoken comfort of a place that felt whole.

It is hard to reconcile that memory with what remains.

Now the structure is open, exposed, its bones showing where life once gathered along that narrow stretch of Crane Road. The sea, still as beautiful as ever, looks on without apology. Sand has claimed the floor, creeping inward, blurring the line between what was built and what has always been. What was once a place of welcome now feels like an echo.

Our thoughts drift toward the melody of those who gathered here, the birthdays, the sunsets, the toasts to love and friendship. The rhythm of raised glasses, the low hum of voices blending with the tide, all suspended in memory, unreachable yet vivid.

And then, in the stillness, something living remains.

A lonely dog lies where we once stood at the bar, its body pressed into the sand, unmoving except for breath. Not searching, not fleeing, only remaining. As if it, too, remembers. As if it holds something of what this place was, even now.

Only silence remains, a heavy, sacred stillness where memories move like ghosts through the shattered frame.

Amid the ruins, that dog becomes more than a passing image. It is the last witness, to laughter, to loss, to the fragile line where joy gives way to ruin. In its stillness, there is a deeper truth: even when walls fall and voices fade, something endures—not in structures, but in presence and memory, held together by an unseen thread that binds us to place.

And perhaps that is what remains of Las Vegas, what was lost, and what refuses to let us go. Not only here, but along the road that leads us back across the bridge and into High Street, where memory now lingers longer than we do.

There are moments when time, place, and purpose meet with quiet grace.

This year, my birthday arrives not only as a personal turning,
but within the sacred unfolding of Nowruz (نوروز), the Spring festival of renewal,
when light returns and the earth remembers how to begin again.

In this convergence, I have come to understand
that the greatest gift of this day is not one received,
but one offered.

In this season, marked by renewal across traditions,
there could be no greater offering than this:
a poem of peace for the people of Iran,
and for all who endure the long night
in their struggle for freedom.

From my home in Jamaica, I gather what I can give:
the blooms of my mother’s garden,
Frangipanis opening softly into the light,
each one a faithful bearer of hope.

They arrive without force,
without demand,
only with presence.

Each petal carries a prayer.
Each color, a reflection of patience,
and the gentle insistence that even now,
life continues to unfold.

And as the days of Nowruz move toward Sizdah Bedar (سیزده بدر), Nature Day,
a time when people step out into the open air
to celebrate life and release what has been carried,
we hold close a deeper longing:

That the noise of war may fall silent.

That this sacred day may once more be lived as it was meant to be:
in laughter,
in gathering,
in reconciliation,
beneath open skies.

It is in this spirit that I offer what follows.

Oh, beautiful Frangipani—

In the hush of morning,
before the world fully remembers itself,
you begin again.

In your first bloom,
soft, folded, almost shy,
there is a tender awakening,
an innocence still wrapped in green,
cradled beneath the arch
of leaves that hold you
like guardian arms.

You whisper then,
not loudly, not for all,
but just enough for the wind to carry
your promise forward.

And we wait.

Day after day,
with the patience life asks of us,
wondering if color will ever come,
if beauty will return
to a world that feels uncertain.

Then—

you open.

Another bloom, wide and unafraid,
spilling its radiant heart into the morning light:
sun-washed pinks, soft as memory,
whites, pure as a mother’s prayer,
reds pulsing like a living heartbeat,
papaya orange, warm with breath,
and golds that rise
like the hush of dawn breaking.

You do not hesitate.
You simply become.

And in your fullest smile,
there is no forgetting,
only presence,
only grace.

Then there is the bloom that lingers,
edges softened, touched by time,
yet no less beautiful.

It does not call for attention,
but holds something deeper:
a steady endurance,
a quiet knowing.

It tells us:
to bloom is not only to begin,
but to remain.

And so, Frangipani,

let your many faces speak now
to this aching, troubled world.

Be the awakening
where hearts have grown weary.

Be the radiant opening
where hope has been withheld.

Be the enduring grace
where suffering has settled too long.

Let your smile, wide, open, unassuming,
carry peace.

May you awaken empathy
where indifference has taken root,
and plant hope
in the smallest, most fragile cracks.

And may those who pass beneath you
remember

what it means to wait,
to believe,
and still
to bloom.

Epilogue — A Prayer Beneath Open Skies

And so, as the final days of Nowruz soften into their farewell,
we turn our hearts toward the horizon,
toward that quiet meeting place of earth and sky,
where hope is not distant,
but present.

Soon comes Sizdah Bedar,
a day of release,
of returning,
of stepping once more
into the living embrace of nature.

A day meant for open fields,
for riverside laughter,
for hands unburdened,
for hearts remembering how to be light.

In this same season, across traditions and places,
Good Friday and Easter draw near,
each a lasting reminder
of sacrifice and renewal,
and the promise that life endures beyond darkness.

We pray:

That this day may arrive in peace.

That those who have known only the weight of uncertainty
may step into light without fear.

That families may gather again,
not in the shadow of what threatens,
but in the fullness of what sustains.

From a small garden in Jamaica
to the ancient landscapes of Iran,
the Frangipani still blooms.

Unhurried.
Unafraid.

And in its silent language,
it reminds us of something the soul has always known:

That even after the longest night,
dawn does not forget its way.

That even in silence,
life is still becoming.

And that peace,
like the blossom,
endures.

Blanche Villa
41 High Street, Black River

There she stood along High Street—
gable lifted into the blue, fretwork catching the light,
a house that knew how to hold both sun and story.

Not so long ago, at Christmastime, my brother, nephews, and I came here to meet Sharon at her beloved Blanche Villa. Along historic High Street, it stood with a quiet dignity, its lace-like woodwork and weathered boards carrying the layered memory of Black River itself—Spanish, Portuguese, British, African, Arabic, Jewish, and Chinese presences, each one settling into the wood, still whispering through its walls.

The verandah stretched wide, welcoming the breeze, its delicate filigree softening the edges of time. Beyond the house, just behind it, the gentle curve of the bay lay open and blue, its winds carrying salt and stillness in equal measure. At the back, we sat and talked, admiring the view as the sun slipped into the water, the light lingering just a little longer.

Inside, we moved easily, laughing, gathering, listening, over polished floors that once caught the light more brightly, among what remained of the fine furnishings that had once graced the house. Sharon shared stories that seemed less told than remembered by the house itself, especially those of her grandmother, Aunt Vie, whose presence lingered in the corners, gentle and assured.

And we stood together in that light, shoulder to shoulder, smiling, never imagining how quickly such moments would become memory.

Now, the sky remains, but the house has opened to it.

Where the verandah once welcomed the breeze, splintered beams lie scattered, timber torn, walls undone—the same winds that once drifted in from the bay returning, in Hurricane Melissa, with a force no house could hold.

The gate still marks the place, the name still lingering.
But the house, as we knew it, is gone.

And yet—

Not entirely.

For what filled Blanche Villa was never only timber and nail, but presence—gathered over years, held in laughter, memory, the simple grace of being together.

That day remains:
in the warmth of a hand on a shoulder,
in the ease of shared smiles,
in the quiet knowing that we belonged, if only for a moment, to something held within those walls.

Black River has always known this truth, without insistence:

that what is built may falter,
but what is shared finds other ways to remain.

And perhaps this is how we carry it forward.

Together We Shall Overcome — One Love

Sleep gently now, Blanche Villa—
your spirit lives on not in what was lost,
but in what was lived,
and in every heart that still carries your light.

I returned to this memory in another troubled season.

I first wrote these words last year, in the shadow of a twelve-day war, after a friend shared a phrase that stayed with me long after we parted: fire beneath the ashes (آتش زیر خاکستر - Atashe zire khakestar)

At the time, it felt like a muted warning carried on the wind between Kandovan and Tabriz. Now, as the country faces the tremor of yet another war, those words carry a sharper truth.

A Persian poet once wrote of the long night stretching toward dawn, and the hope of release from sorrow. We can only pray the night is not long, and that the sorrow does not grow too great.

Still, I return to the warmth of that road—the music, the laughter, and the brief, undeniable sense that human connection can rise above fear.

This is that moment.

On the mountain road from Kandovan to Tabriz,
snow falling through the fading light,
you played the music.

And we danced.

We danced in the snow, flakes catching on our coats.

The cold fell away.
Distance dissolved.
An hour before, we were strangers—
now laughing, arms around each other,
breath rising in the cold air,
as if we could hold the moment.

I stepped into your world,
not for gold or silver,
but something far rarer—
a place, however brief, within your lives.

And now,
three days into a fragile ceasefire,

The air has changed.
Something unsettled lingers beneath.

A friend said quietly,
his words smoldering long after:

“Kevin, things seem calmer now,
but I think what lies ahead will not be easy.
We have a saying in Persian: fire under the ashes.
I’m not sure how to say it in English.”

No one needed it explained.

We felt it even then,
though we danced anyway.

And still, we hope.

That one day,
on some road, somewhere,
music will rise again without fear,
and people will dance,
believing the moment will stay.

Epilogue

Looking back now, that snowy road between Kandovan and Tabriz feels suspended in time, a brief refuge before the weight of events returned.

We danced as strangers who had become, if only for an hour, something like family. Beneath the laughter and the music, there was already an unease none of us could fully name.

Today, as the echoes of conflict rise again, my friend’s words no longer feel like a metaphor. The ashes have been stirred—the fire beneath them is no longer hidden.

Yet I hold on to that evening, our breath rising in the cold air, the music carrying, because it reminds me of something just as real as war: the quiet, unyielding desire of ordinary people to live freely, to gather openly, and to trust that their joy will endure.

Among them, that desire lingers, like the faint sweetness of honey settling on the tongue—a promise not yet fully tasted, but impossible to forget.

And so I keep this memory not only as a record of what was, but as an act of faith in what might still be.

Like Nowruz itself, it insists that dawn will come.*

* Nowruz is the Persian New Year, marking the arrival of spring and symbolizing renewal, light, and the triumph of dawn over darkness.

War has returned to Iran’s skies.

Reports now speak of bombings in and around Tehran and other cities—including Isfahan, a place Persians have long called half the world.

The latest conflict, unfolding under the ominous code name Operation Epic Fury, has revived fears that the region may once again slide toward a wider and more devastating war.

For me, these headlines are not abstract.

They carry the weight of memory.

Last year, during another brief but frightening confrontation—Operation Rising Star and Operation Midnight Hammer—I wrote the reflection that follows. The war lasted only twelve days, yet the uncertainty it unleashed felt immeasurable.

Now the rhetoric is rising again, and the explosions are drawing closer to places I once walked freely.

My mind drifts back to the quiet courtyards and luminous domes of Isfahan, to the deep blues of tiled mosques whose patterns spiral upward like constellations, and to the extraordinary coexistence of traditions that have long shaped Iran’s cultural landscape.

It is there that this memory begins.

Half the World in Peril: A Prayer from Isfahan

Beside a row of rolled carpets waiting for the call to prayer, a man stood with his head bowed.

Around him, the courtyard of the Jameh Mosque of Isfahan held the gentle stillness that often settles over Isfahan in the quiet hours of the morning: the soft echo of footsteps on stone, the distant murmur of the old bazaar beyond its walls, and the quiet flutter of birds crossing the pale sky above.

In moments like this, the city seems to gather its centuries quietly around you.

Light fell softly across the ancient stones.

It was one of the first photographs I took when I arrived in Isfahan.

I lifted my camera and captured the moment. The man never looked up; the exchange between us remained entirely unspoken.

At the time it felt ordinary.

Yet looking back now, it carries a quiet weight.

The sahn of the Jameh Mosque of Isfahan has stood through centuries of empire, invasion, and renewal. Generations had crossed these stones before me, answering the same call to prayer beneath the same pale sky.

This mosque, one of the oldest and most magnificent in the city, is a UNESCO World Heritage site woven into the living fabric of Isfahan’s ancient bazaar, first established in 771 under the Abbasid caliph Al-Mansur.

Every stone, every arch, every prayer niche carries the memory of centuries.

It is not merely a place of worship.
It is a living archive of civilization.

Today, it feels impossibly fragile.

From the quiet humility of prayer to the celestial geometry of light, Isfahan reveals yet another of its wonders.

Inside the exquisite Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, sunlight filtering through the small oculus at the center of the dome creates the famous illusion of a peacock’s tail unfolding in light—one of the most extraordinary visual marvels of Safavid architecture.

The dome itself seems to breathe with illumination, its delicate patterns shifting as the sun slowly crosses the sky.

Now, friends tell me they have heard bombs exploding near Isfahan’s nuclear facilities.

The situation worsens by the day.

Diplomatic talks in Geneva appear to have stalled, and reports of American military preparations raise fears that the United States could be drawn further into the conflict alongside Israel.

The uncertainty hangs heavily in the air as the attacks continue with no clear end in sight.

Throughout the Persian-speaking world, an old saying still captures the city’s grandeur:

“Isfahān nesf-e jahān ast” (اصفهان نصف جهان)

Isfahan is half the world.

The phrase dates back to the golden age of Shah Abbas I, when Isfahan became the capital of the Safavid dynasty and dazzled travelers from across Europe and Asia.

Situated along the great arteries of the ancient Silk Road, the city drew merchants, pilgrims, and envoys from across continents—so many that visitors said to see Isfahan was to see half the world gathered in one place.

In the early seventeenth century, the Safavid rulers transformed Isfahan into one of the great capitals of the world. At the heart of their vision rose Naqsh-e Jahan, one of the largest public squares ever built, framed by royal palaces, bustling markets, and some of the most magnificent mosques in all of Persia.

Centuries later, as evening falls over Naqsh-e Jahan Square, the vast expanse begins to glow. Lamps flicker to life beneath the arcades, and the turquoise domes rise softly against the fading sky.

Travelers have long stood here in awe of a city that seemed to gather the world within its walls.

With its breathtaking concentration of historic mosques, palaces, bridges, and gardens—many recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites—the city stands as a testament to the artistic, spiritual, and architectural achievements of humanity.

Iran ranks among the countries with the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

It had been my quiet hope to see them all, each site another doorway into the long memory of Persia.

Yet I managed to see only half of them before geopolitical tensions forced my departure—an unfinished journey through a land where one city alone is said to be half the world.

Among the places that stayed with me most was Vank Cathedral.

Built by the Armenian community that settled in Isfahan during the reign of Shah Abbas I, it reminds us that the city’s cultural inheritance has never belonged to one tradition alone, but has long been shared across many.

The cathedral’s walls, painted floor to ceiling with biblical scenes rendered in vivid Persian color, tell stories of another faith entirely, yet beneath the same Persian sky.

It was also the last place I visited before leaving Isfahan.

Now, as the threat of war draws closer, that memory no longer feels distant; it feels exposed, as though something ancient and quietly luminous has been placed at risk.

And so I find myself turning, almost instinctively, to hope, praying that this longing might rise beyond the clouds and be heard, and that full-scale war may yet be averted.

Not only to spare lives, but to protect the irreplaceable cultural and architectural treasures that Iran has bequeathed to the heritage of all humanity.

For in the end, what is at stake is not only a nation’s past, but the fragile inheritance shared across all people.

As the Persian poet Saadi of Shiraz wrote:

Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.

Epilogue

Standing beneath the domes of Isfahan, one senses something profound about the endurance of civilization.

Look up into the intricate ceilings of its mosques and palaces and the geometry seems almost infinite—patterns radiating outward like a cosmic map drawn in tile and light.

Nearby, the painted walls of Vank Cathedral tell stories of another faith entirely, yet beneath the same Persian sky. And in Golestan Palace, hundreds of kilometers away in Tehran—whose mirrored halls and jeweled thrones reflect centuries of monarchy, another chapter of Iran’s artistic brilliance still glimmers.

War can damage such places in an instant.

But civilizations do not live in stone alone; they live in the people who remember them, rebuild them, and pass them forward.

Many Iranians I have spoken with say something striking: if freedom finally comes, what is destroyed can be rebuilt.

But freedom itself cannot be postponed forever.

And so I hold onto hope—hope that the bombs will fall silent, that the ancient cities of Iran will continue to glow with light for generations to come, and that its people, in every city and village, will one day live in the freedom so many quietly long for.

And I think again of that quiet moment in the courtyard of the Jameh Mosque of Isfahan—a man standing with his head bowed beside carpets waiting to be unrolled for prayer as morning light touched the ancient stones.

If Isfahan is truly half the world, then what happens here will echo far beyond its domes and courtyards—

into the conscience of us all.

As a child, I often wondered what lay behind the green double doors of the waterside house in historic Black River. Its colorful façade seemed almost theatrical—sun-warmed yellow walls, bold green doors meeting in quiet symmetry, deep red columns rising with understated confidence. Above, delicate fretwork traced the eaves like lace against the sky. That intricate wooden embroidery felt less like ornament and more like inheritance, a visible signature of the town’s long memory and careful artistry.

Someone once opened those double doors each morning.

I would pass it and imagine polished wooden floors cooled by sea breeze, wide windows framing the bay, the slow rhythm of life unfolding upstairs on a shaded porch. The house felt alive with withheld stories. I never imagined my first real glimpse inside would come not through invitation, but through ruin.

Hurricane Melissa did not merely damage the house. She tore away the face it had shown the street for generations. The surge drove straight through it, swallowing the green doors, splintering the red columns, tearing away the delicate fretwork that once stitched lace against the sky. What had stood as color and craftsmanship was carried outward with the water and cast into the street beyond. The façade I had admired since childhood no longer stands to guard its dignity. It is gone.

What remains is exposure.

Inside, the dwelling has been stripped to its bones. A rough wooden staircase climbs toward a weathered doorway now open to nothing but sky, though several of its steps have been blown clean out by the force of the surge, leaving gaps where footing once was. A scrap of white cloth catches on the railing, suspended in the air, as if someone has just stepped away and never returned. Beneath the staircase and along its side, the old stone wall presses forward, thick, uneven, and enduring, its surface marked by salt, storm, and time. Light pours in without resistance. The boundary between inside and outside has dissolved.

Through the broken frame of the house, the horizon begins to glow.

And then the bay appears.

Not framed by veranda railings as I once imagined. Not admired from a shaded upper deck. But revealed through absence, through beams that stand like solemn ribs against the horizon. Piles of timber and broken masonry lie at my feet, while beyond them the bay stretches outward beneath a sky brushed in coral, amber, and fading violet—the last light of evening settling softly on the water. A lone sailboat rests in the distance, suspended between sea and sky, untouched by the chaos along the shore.

The view is breathtaking. And it feels unearned.

Beauty revealed by ruin carries a strange weight.

For years, I longed to see that sweep of sea from the porch above, to experience the bay elevated, sheltered, whole. Instead, I stand at ground level amid debris, looking outward through what the storm forcibly unveiled. Beauty remains, but it is revealed through rupture. I would have preferred revelation by hospitality, not by collapse.

Perhaps what unsettles me most is the completeness of the loss. The fretwork that once spoke of artistry is gone. The painted façade that declared pride is gone. Even the doors that held mystery are gone. The house no longer presents a face to the street; it stands open, vulnerable, almost stunned.

And yet, the stones still stand.

Heavy, irregular, stubborn—the old stone walls endured the surge that consumed everything lighter than themselves. Scarred and exposed, yes. But upright. They have survived not only Hurricane Melissa, but decades of salt wind and slow erosion. In their thickness there is a different kind of beauty, not decorative, but foundational.

Where wood failed, stone persisted.

In that persistence, I find hope.

I imagine those stones becoming foundation again, not relics of what was, but anchors for what may yet rise. I imagine craftsmen returning, carving fretwork anew, repainting doors in bold green, restoring color to the shoreline. I imagine someone stepping once more onto an upper porch rebuilt with care, gazing across the same bay at dusk, this time through railings fashioned by human hands, not through gaps torn open by water.

To witness total ruin is to understand what was merely adornment and what was essential.

As a child, I wondered what was inside that house. Now I know. Beneath paint and trim, beneath symmetry and lace, there was stone. And stone remembers how to endure.

The façade may be gone. The embroidery erased.

But the foundation remains.

The stones still stand.

And as long as they do, so does the possibility that Black River will stitch new beauty against the sky, anchored deeply enough in stone to rise again.

Last year, during the twelve-day war, the skies above Iran filled with coordinated air strikes: Israel’s Operation Rising Star and the U.S.’s Operation Midnight Hammer. I wrote as the bombs fell.

Now, after fresh domestic uprisings have unsettled the nation once more, it begins again under the code name Epic Fury.

The sky fractures.

And the familiar unease returns in the hours before dawn.

It was never a question of if, only when.

The waiting was excruciating.

And then the messages came.

Before Dawn, Again

I woke to hurried words, frightened and breathless:

“Hi Kevin. The war began.”

Another: “Kevin war started.”

And another: “Opened my eyes with the bomb sound.”

There is something especially cruel about waking into war. No gradual awareness. Only rupture tearing open the morning.

We texted quickly, clinging to fragments. I sent my last message:

“I’m praying for you all — please be safe.”

It remains undelivered. Another internet blackout.

The quiet stretches. Not knowing becomes its own crucible, like breath caught in a tightening chest. The severed signal is not merely technological. It is human.

For days I have tried, without success, to reach them. What disappears with the signal is not convenience, but reassurance.

It felt this way last year too, suspended between fragments of news and sudden silence. And now, with the skies unsettled again, the waiting returns.

Yet even in upheaval, life does not pause.

My Persian teacher, my patient guide through language and poetry, has married. Photographs arrived before the blackout: joy carried quietly, without spectacle. His proud parents stood beside him and his bride, the same parents who had invited me many times to share generous dishes of Persian food around their table. They endured the long years of the Iran–Iraq war. I wondered what memories crossed their faces as they watched their son begin anew in a land that has known so much upheaval, whether the sound of distant sirens still lingers somewhere beneath their smiles.

Another friend has welcomed a baby into the world. A first cry rising into a country long accustomed to sirens. New breath, unaware of history.

And then another message, heavy in a different way:

“I attended the funeral of my friend. He was killed in the crackdown.”

No embellishment. Only fact.

A wedding.
A birth.
A funeral.

All within the same fragile stretch of days.

Beyond these intimate milestones, fear continues its wider sweep.

Some have fled across borders in search of safer skies and onward flights. At times, even the airspace closes. Others remain, navigating celebration and mourning beneath the same horizon.

What pierced me most was the helplessness in their voices:

“Kevin, please let me know if you hear anything.”

Their bodies may cross borders, but their hearts remain tethered to those still inside. You can hear it in the silence that follows every fragment of news.

I offer what little comfort I can, words smaller than the fear that prompted them. How much can words offer when fear replaces the morning light?

So in the narrow space between worry and hope, we return to what binds us: memory.

We speak of quieter days: laughter spilling from tucked-away cafés, golden leaves gathering along Valiasr Street in autumn, steam curling from small glass cups of tea as we lingered long after evening prayers faded.

Smiles came easily.

Those were the unguarded days.

And now, in their absence, we hold fast to them. Because memory is not escape. It is quiet resistance. It reminds us of the lives we are praying to return to, and the lives still unfolding beneath falling bombs.

Life persists more quietly.

A bridegroom steps into a beginning.
A child takes its first breath.

Iran has always been more to me than a place in the news. It is a culture of poetry and hospitality, of domes that gather light at dusk, of conversations that stretch late into the evening over tea. It is friends whose courage is woven into their daily routines.

This story centers on one family. In many ways, it speaks for countless others navigating that fragile space between endurance and hope, waiting once more to see whether the sky will remain quiet.

The cat’s face says it all.

Tucked into the corner of its travel seat, it lies draped in exhaustion,
eyes sealed tight, as if sleep itself were a shelter.
Its paws stretch forward in quiet surrender.

Its fur, soft as smoke, rests against the worn fabric.
It isn’t playing. It isn’t curious.
It’s done.

No hunger. No meow. No protest.
Just a silent plea shaped by sleep:
Please, let me go home.

My dear friend and her family, like so many others, fled Tehran during twelve harrowing days when the sky would not stay quiet. With hearts pounding and hope stretched thin, they left behind the familiar architecture of their lives and drove toward Yazd, her father’s hometown, a city of windcatchers and clay walls where dusk gathers slowly over blue-tiled domes and the call to prayer folds gently into evening.

Her parents had already lived through one war. The long years of the Iran–Iraq conflict had taught them how quickly ordinary days can fracture. They had learned how to endure sirens, shortages, uncertainty. And now, decades later, they were called again to summon that same quiet resilience from deep within memory.

As the miles of desert unspooled beyond the windshield, the toll of displacement began to show.

Her father, once a pillar of measured strength, sat angled slightly toward the window, his shoulders lowered by more than age. The landscape passed in muted browns and dusted light, and he watched it without speaking, as if carrying not only their bags but the accumulated weight of wars survived and wars returned.

Beside him sat his wife, steady as ever, a woman whose faith has always been lived more than spoken. She has journeyed with him through love and loss, through air-raid sirens and rebuilding, through years that required more courage than commentary.

She raised their children in seasons of uncertainty, guarding normalcy when the world felt fragile, anchoring the family when fear tried to loosen its hold.

Her presence did what it has always done.
It steadied the air around him.

In quieter evenings at home, the cat often lay at his feet while he prayed, her small body gathered beside his knees, as if devotion were something she, too, understood.

Then, without ceremony, something tender unfolded.

As if sensing the ache beneath his silence, the cat stirred. It rose from its corner, stepped carefully across his lap, and climbed onto his chest, lowering itself over the quiet drum that had endured so much.

It pressed there and grew still, rising and falling with his breath.

No words were exchanged, but the comfort was understood.

Yazd received them in the amber hush of evening. The clay walls held the day’s heat. Minarets traced slender silhouettes against a sky that glowed as if nothing had ever burned. For a moment, sanctuary felt possible.

And now, under the fragile veil of a ceasefire, they travel the long road back to Tehran.

Return is not simple.
Relief walks beside apprehension.

There is joy in the thought of familiar streets, beloved neighbors, the rhythm of a life interrupted but not erased. Yet beneath that joy lives another awareness, the knowledge that when wars end, power does not simply rest.

They fear the silence that follows war, when bombs stop falling from the sky and power quietly rearranges itself.

Governments, unsettled and protective of their pride, turn inward to reassert control, and ordinary lives feel the tightening first.

They have lived long enough to know that danger does not always arrive from the sky.

They carry more than luggage.
They carry memories of sirens and survival.
They carry faith forged by endurance.
They carry hope — careful, but alive.

Even the cat knows what the body longs for.

Home is not only walls and streets.
Not only language and routine.
Not only the place where one’s name is known.

Home is where fear loosens its grip.
Where love outlasts the noise of history.
Where even in exile, or on the long road back, the heart continues its quiet conversation with heaven.

Home is a prayer.

Epilogue

Time moves forward, as it always does. The news cycle shifts. The skies clear. Conversations turn to other urgencies.

And yet, as ships reposition and rhetoric sharpens, the familiar unease returns—not dramatic, not always visible, but present. A kind of inward watchfulness. A memory carried in the body.

Life resumes in ordinary ways: tea poured, doors opened, children called home at dusk. And beneath it all, a steady hope that calm will hold.

I return to this story not to stir alarm, but to remember the tenderness that endures beneath uncertainty, the quiet ways people protect one another, the small gestures that say stay, rest, we are still here.

Somewhere, perhaps, a cat still curls against a weary chest.

And somewhere, a family continues its quiet prayer for home.

When I wrote Home Is a Prayer, I did not name the cat.

Her name is Pastil.

She was adopted at one year and three months old, from a family preparing to leave Iran. At first, my friend’s parents hesitated. Perhaps it was an indulgence in unsettled times.

But years passed, as they do. Pastil made herself indispensable in the quiet ways animals manage: by curling close in the evenings, by waiting faithfully at the doorway, by settling near the knees of my friend’s father while he prayed.

In time, they could no longer imagine the house without her.

During the twelve days of bombing, Pastil showed signs of stress. The blasts unsettled her. The walls trembled. So did she.

And yet, she remained.

There is something profoundly moving about that—a small creature, adopted in a season of departure, becoming part of what stayed.

In times of unrest, we often speak of resilience as if it were grand. But sometimes it is simply this: a warm body beside you in the dark, refusing to leave.

I will never forget the quiet dignity of this gentleman, his presence marked by a polite and gentle demeanor. Silver-haired, slightly stooped, accordion resting against his chest as though it belonged there, he stood in that café like a keeper of memory. Warm lights glowed above him, catching the shine of the teapot on my table and illuminating the amber tea before me. Everything felt suspended in tenderness.

Some people pass through our lives quietly, yet remain forever.

His name has slipped from my mind, softened by time and distance. I have wrestled with that forgetting. War has a way of erasing names first, reducing lives to headlines, to numbers, to abstractions. I do not want him to become an abstraction.

If I remember how he stood, how he played, how he bowed his head at the end of each song, then something of him remains intact in this world.

Though I can no longer recall the syllables that form his name, I have never forgotten the moments he graced that café with his traditional music. Names may fade, but presence does not. I carry him with me still, as vividly as if it were yesterday: the soft swell of his accordion, the humility in his posture, the way his melodies arrived quietly and lingered long after he had gone.

Memory becomes its own form of resistance.

He never asked for anything. Never extended a hand. Never interrupted conversation. Instead, he offered music.

He would move gently between tables and begin to play, a melody woven with centuries of longing and resilience. His fingers moved with reverence. His eyes lowered as though in prayer. The bellows breathed in and out like a living thing. When the song ended, he would give the faintest nod and quietly bid you goodbye, as if his presence were no more than a gentle breeze passing by.

I always left something for him, not out of pity but out of gratitude. His music was not just entertainment. It was inheritance. It was blessing. It was the sound of a people who have endured and still sing.

He became part of the rhythm of my days: the clink of tea glasses, the murmur of conversation, the scent of brewing leaves. And then, rising above it all, his melodies, threading through the café air, finding something in me that needed calming, anchoring, remembering.

Now my mind drifts to troubling times in Iran. I think of my friends there. I think of cafés filled with laughter. Of shared tea. Of everyday beauty that never makes headlines.

And I think of him.

As uncertainty grows and silence falls heavy where music once lingered, I wonder if he still carries his accordion through familiar streets. I wonder if the lights still glow above him. I wonder if he and his family are safe.

Sometimes, in the stillness of my evenings, I imagine him playing once more, the bellows opening and closing like a quiet heartbeat, the melody rising, steady and unafraid. In my dreams and wanderings, I still hear him.

And I pray.
May he be protected.
May his home be filled with safety.
May his name—though forgotten by me—be spoken in love by those who know it best.
May the gentleness he gave to the world return to him a hundredfold.
May the music never leave him.

For in every place I have traveled, from desert shrines to ancient cities, from sacred rivers to silent ruins, I have learned this: faith is not always thunder. It is often a quiet man beneath warm café lights, breathing life into an accordion while the world trembles outside. It is the stubborn insistence on beauty when history feels heavy. It is gentleness that refuses to disappear.

And perhaps that is what endures.
And perhaps that is what will carry us through.

Having lived and traveled there, and having formed deep friendships across its cities and cafés, I carry those memories closely. Some places do not simply close their doors. They linger quietly, holding time within their walls long after the last guest has gone. In Black River, one such place once stood in silence, its absence now speaking as loudly as its welcome once did.

My memory of the majestic nineteenth-century Victorian house reaches back to childhood. Set a few hundred metres off High Street, she rested in her own solitude, her roofline lifting above the trees. Nestled within lush vegetation and almost always framed by bougainvillea in full, bright bloom, it felt as though nature herself stood guard. Before her, the Caribbean Sea glistened and opened outward, stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

Designed with elegance and restraint, the two-storey Magdala residence was acquired from private ownership in 1963 by the Catholic Church and, under its care, became an orphanage. On 13 September 1990, it was rightly declared a National Heritage Site.

In later years, the old manor stood unattended and began to surrender to time. To witness her grandeur fade was heartbreaking. I feared that this historic treasure would breathe her last and vanish without ceremony from our collective memory.

In 2024, a friend and I returned.

The house stood exposed now, closer, more vulnerable. Its ornate fretwork, peeling paint, and sagging veranda murmured of age and elegance alike. Leaning into her own fragility, her worn facade shouldered the solemn weight of decades. A palm tree stood beside her—indifferent, enduring—a patient guardian to all that had passed and all that might yet whisper through the slow, steady pulse of memory.

We entered an echoing stillness. The silence felt ceremonial, as though we had stepped onto consecrated ground. The hallowed emptiness bore witness, and I imagined her in her heyday at the turn of the century—rooms alive with light, furnished in fine Jamaican mahogany, laughter and footsteps moving freely through her corridors.

We made our way up the expansive staircase, the carved handrail and posts bearing the labour of careful hands. Midway up, I paused before a single wooden newel post. Its floral cap, softened by age, carried the quiet dignity of endurance. The wood was worn and chipped, dusted pale by time, marked by decades of touch, storms, and waiting—yet the carving remained intact, resolute, remembering.

We continued upward, stepping lightly, as though we were intruders rather than guests, careful not to be heard, not to disturb what had settled into stillness. At the top, the stairs opened into a wide foyer, bare and breathing. There, on a pale, peeling wall, hung a lone portrait drawing my gaze: the Madonna of Magdala.

The Madonna watched over the space. She was the only adornment left in the orphaned residence—the final witness on walls otherwise stripped bare.

The timeworn likeness was held in a silvered frame dulled by salt air and years of waiting. I drew closer. Inside it, a veiled saint bowed her head, eyes lowered, as if caught mid-prayer or mid-listening. The colours had settled with time: muted blues, ash-silver folds, a face preserved gently, tenderly. Out of reverence, I leaned in further to see what lay beneath it.

There, faint handwriting and a circular stamp blurred into near-erasure, devotion once named, now half-forgotten. I tried to make out the words but could decipher only one: benedico. It felt like a blessing spoken not only over her, but over the house itself.

So moved was I by the Madonna, alone and keeping company with absence, that for a moment I considered rescuing her from the provisional screw that held her to the wall. But almost immediately, another thought followed: no. In the stillness of the forsaken house, the icon belonged exactly where it was. She was keeping vigil.

I stepped back and imagined that what the hand once wrote had faded, but the intention remained:

May this presence bless what stands here.
May what cannot be saved still be kept.
May the house remember, even when the words do not.

While the Madonna dutifully kept watch, there was talk—hopeful, almost careless—of restoring the House of Magdala to her former glory. Plans were spoken aloud, as though naming the future might anchor it in place. The house had endured much already. She had withstood decades of weather and abandonment and, in the summer of 2024, survived the violence of Hurricane Beryl. That survival bred confidence. If it had held then, we believed it would hold again.

Yet standing beneath the bowed gaze of the Madonna, something felt unfinished. Her eyes were lowered not in rest, but in vigilance. The walls seemed to listen. In her quiet, the house appeared to know what we did not.

The following year, the storm came.

When I returned in the hurricane’s wake, the blessing I had once sensed beneath her image, benedico, no longer felt like protection, but like a benediction spoken at the threshold of loss. The House of Magdala had not been spared.

I found myself at the gates of utter destruction, beside the shrine of Saint Theresa. She stood, holding the crucifix across her bosom—intact, unbroken—bearing witness to the ruin behind her: splintered wood, fallen beams, the scattered chaos left by Hurricane Melissa. The house had fallen. For a breath that felt endless, I simply stared. Around her statue, the ground lay unsettled, and the gates bent inward, yet she remained upright, gaze steady, as if faith had arrived early and decided to stay.

As I stood at the foot of the shrine, leaning against the broken gate, absorbing the magnitude of loss, time seemed to loosen and slip beneath the wreckage. My eyes drifted beyond what remained, into a hard noon sky, brilliant blue, its white clouds throwing everything below into sharp relief. And there, in my imagining, the Madonna lingered in quiet grace, head bowed, frame dulled, faithful to the last, keeping watch over what could not be saved.

The old impulse returned: to reach back, to take something with me, to rescue the Madonna from the rubble, as if saving the image might somehow redeem the loss.

Take me back, not to undo the storm, but to the moment before, when she stood undisturbed, a steadfast presence in a house that believed it would endure.

She kept watch to the very end—
when the house could no longer hold.

The House of Magdala stood in Black River, Jamaica, for more than a century before its destruction following Hurricane Melissa. A designated National Heritage Site, it was cherished by many, and there was a collective hope across community and nation that it might one day be restored. This essay is both remembrance and witness, an attempt to hold in words what could not ultimately be preserved in wood and stone.

One moment the sun was still part of the contract.
The next, it withdrew without explanation, and the sky turned traitor.

Cold arrived like a decree: quiet, merciless, absolute.
Blood slowed. Muscles hardened. Breath forgot its rhythm.
Mid-branch, mid-thought, mid-breath, we stopped.

Green kings unseated from our crowns, we became statues,
scattered across lawns and sidewalks like misplaced relics.
Some of us clung.
Some of us slipped.
All of us waited.

This was not the end we were taught to fear.
No fire.
No flood.
No fire and brimstone hurled from the sky.

Only stillness.

Time thickened. The world continued without us.
Humans moved among the fallen—pointing, laughing, lifting phones—
stepping carefully around what looked like death.
We heard none of it.
We were elsewhere, held in a long, frozen pause.

And yet, we were not dead.

For even in scripture, judgment is not always destruction.
Sometimes it is suspension.
Sometimes the trial is not pain but patience,
the long obedience of immobility,
the faith that warmth will return.

Armageddon, it turns out, does not always roar.
Sometimes it whispers.
Sometimes it arrives without prophecy
and leaves without judgment.

So we lie here—unblinking, unseeing—
trusting a promise written not in words but in light.
Awaiting resurrection by the warmth of the sun.
Awaiting the lift.

No sermon delivered.
Still, the lesson held.

I wrote this during the twelve-day war in Iran last year, in a time when uncertainty hung heavy and ordinary life felt newly fragile. Even then, amid fear and fracture, I kept returning to a smaller memory, one that resisted the noise of conflict.

It was a moment of shared presence, of cultural exchange so simple it might have gone unnoticed, yet it carried a quiet defiance: proof that connection can exist even when the world insists on division. I return to it now, during recent upheavals marked by brutal and fatal force, not out of nostalgia, but because its meaning has only sharpened.

The moment I introduced a treasure of my Little Jamaica to Iran remains with me, as vivid as the scent of freshly brewed coffee.

It was the first time the distinctive aroma of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee filled the room, rich, smooth, and gently unfamiliar, curling into the curiosity of my Persian friends. They watched as I poured, attentive and reserved. When the cups were raised, there was a pause before the first sip, a quiet moment of consideration. Then came smiles. Subtle nods. Curiosity giving way to delight.

That first sip was more than taste. It was an offering of place, memory, and care, received with warmth. In that exchange, two worlds met and bowed to each other in mutual respect, without explanation or ceremony.

I carry this moment not only as memory, but as metaphor: for how life might be if people shared the best of who they are without fear or prejudice. If a single cup could open such space, why does intolerance so often steal the stage, when simple acts of sharing, whether a drink or a story, can create meaning, joy, and connection?

That Blue Mountain brew did more than wake the senses. As the steam rose from our cups, it reminded me how quietly, and how easily, understanding can begin.

I return to that sip as proof that something human endures.
