I’m serious. I’m not just saying this because yes, I am a personal stylist and wardrobe editor, but because it’s true. I’ve worked with hundreds ( maybe thousands) of women (and men, back when I first started) and this advice will always resonate.

Let me break it down for you without the fluff.

When you work with a stylist you trust, you’re curating a closet actually you love and want to wear. You will never fill your closet with pieces that are going to sit there, unworn. The pieces you invest in, the ones you take time to intentionally add, will add value to your lifestyle and make getting dressed easier.

Having a dedicated person to work closely with you to curate pieces that fit your body and your lifestyle is the difference between wearing and styling your clothes.

I have heard this countless times with my clients. They struggle because their closets are stuffed but they still end up wearing the same five things on repeat. Or they’ve been working from home for forever and now need to go into an office, except the last time they really shopped was 6 years ago. Or they’re transitioning into a new phase of life and what they actually need isn’t 10 different black going out tops, it’s clothes that keep them looking polished and put together without trying too hard.

When you work with me, I will never tell you yes every time. I can’t! And you should never work with someone who does. You know they’re lying to you if all they ever do is agree with you. I actually ask clients upfront, do you want me to be blunt or give you the full explanation as to why you don’t need something?

As you start to think about outfits and fall clothes, I like to remind my clients to keep it simple. Don’t overthink because when you do that, you start to stress yourself out! Pick one piece of clothing that you want to wear and style around it. For me, I typically like to start with pants (usually a jean or a trouser) and then build my look around the weather, how I’m feeling and how much time I actually have to spend on the outfit. Don’t forget to add accessories to style the look so that it feels pulled together and intentional while giving you confidence, because that is truly your best accessory.

Before I get into the formulas, I always like to list off a few of my favorite things that I love at the moment. Starting with this this concealer. I’ve been breaking out a little and this has been saving me; This lounge set (top and bottoms) that literally feels like whipped butter on your skin (maybe keep for inside the house only though); These are my favorite undergarments for nighttime and the best best best strapless bra; I have been taking these gummies at night to help quickly fall asleep, they’re delish! My favorite hand soap scent also comes in a body wash that smells so luxurious, which also makes for a really nice gift! This LED hair growth helmet looks absolutely ridiculous but I have been using consistently since about April and am seeing a difference (NOT SPONSORED BUT HAPPY TO!!! I do have a code though, ALEXLAMB). Very into this personalized chain link bracelet that I have not taken off since I got it, it really adds a nice element to my stack. This built in bra tank has been another lifesaver when you’re just too hot to wear a bra. Speaking of being too hot, can you believe there are now pjs that keep you cool at night?! Well there are and I must say, they really do just that. There are so many other things I love I think I have to do a separate post. Stay tuned for that.

Anyways! Now for the formulas! Reminder to use these as a guide and apply what you have in your closet! Don’t feel obligated to spend money on something new, unless you absolutely need it. Think about what you already have in your wardrobe that could work and if you don’t have the exact piece I’m referencing, use what you do have! Make sure you’re always wearing something that makes you feel confident, comfortable and chic.

10 fall transitional outfit formulas to help ease into fall:

1. white long sleeve tee + white denim + dark or colored flip flops (or a ballet flat) + similar colored bag + belt + accent jewelry (gold with gold hardware, silver with silver hardware, etc). Pro styling tip: keep your base outfit monochromatic and then you can add dark accents to make the look pop but still feel effortless.

2. button down + sarong or skirt + ballet flat + textured bag. Think of this look as your elevated meets understated. If you don’t have a sarong that will work as a skirt, you can also try a favorite skirt to pair with the top. You can also add a bold belt to bring the two pieces together.

3. tank top or tee + blue sweater (for over your shoulders or to wear) + slim jean + white or cream little heel or flat or a sandal + silver jewelry. I love the blue and white/cream combo, I think it can be a perfect transition into fall since it blends the summer white with a darker color. You can also pair the blue with a black or dark brown shoe and accessories to pull this together.

4. cardigan worn as a shirt + denim shorts + belt + kitten heel or flat. Add a chunky necklace and open the buttons on the cardigan to make your collarbones pop.

5. matching set (love this top and pant option) + woven ballet flat + textured bag. As you know, I love a matching set because of the amount of ways you can style the pieces! The best part of wearing a matching set together is that you can always style it differently depending on your mood. For fall, try combining a summer element (like a sandal or woven flat) and a fall piece (like a fun belt, use code ALEXLAMB20) to help ease into cooler weather.

6. long sleeve tee + dark wash denim + woven ballet flat or pointed toe shoe to elongate the look + accessories (belt and statement jewelry). This is taking a very simple base outfit and styling it in a way that feels unique to you. Wear your favorite accessories to accent the look! Pro styling tip: wear a patterned scarf as a belt or wrap around your shoulders for a fun “third piece.”

7. statement top + wide leg denim + pointed slingback + textured bag + belt. The belt is key here, especially if your statement top is a little oversized and you’re pairing with a wider denim! It will instantly pull the look together and give you a focal point. This is proportional dressing!

8. long dress + tall boot + suede blazer + textured bag. I’m really into mixing and matching different textures to elevate your everyday looks. This is a fun way to take a simple dress and make it fall appropriate.

9. lightweight trench + fitted tank + straight leg trouser + loafer + statement jewelry. When you need an extra layer as the weather turns cooler, a lightweight trench is a great option that will pull a look together. I also love this look with a mid or dark wash denim instead of trousers, especially if a work pant isn’t in your daily rotation.

10. midi skirt (I love a silk or leather) + lightweight sweater tucked + knee high boot + statement jacket (like a bomber) + delicate jewelry + textured bag. This is a fun way to add different textures to your look, especially with the combo of a silk skirt, cashmere sweater and suede bomber. You can also swap the sweater for a tee if needed.

Take these outfit formulas and absolutely play around! Wearing different textures (like leather, suede, fringe, etc.) and darker colors will help your looks feel intentional for the upcoming season. When you want to feel elevated and effortless, keep your base look simple and add pops of color to make a statement. Don’t forget to add a focal point (like a tucked in top or accent piece) so that the eye is drawn to your fully styled outfit. If you’re ever doubting your look, a pro styling tip is to add a layer! Something like a sweater over your shoulders, layered necklaces or bracelets, a third piece such as a blazer or bomber jacket, etc. Another quick tip I swear by for easily elevating your seasonal look is to swap your everyday leather bag to a suede option. It will immediately feel updated and weather related. When you have rotating options of basic pieces that work with your lifestyle and personal style, your outfits start to feel cohesive and curated.

If you’ve been following me, then you already have a great closet foundation. You just need to learn how to style your clothes in a way that work. Let’s take your 5 key summer items and style around them. These don’t have to be the exact items but they should be pieces you feel comfy in and already have. Outfit 2: Weekend Default
Tank tucked into your linen pant. You can also add your linen button down and leave it open as an option. Swap the flat for a flip flop or your favorite sandal.

Don’t forget your layers!

You read that and probably thought I had heat stroke since hot weather makes layering feel completely unnecessary. However! That does not mean you shouldn’t layer your look. Stay away from jackets and sweaters (obviously) and instead, pick accessories that stand out. I’m talking layering your jewelry, adding a textured bag, even fun sunglasses that will add a sense of depth to your look without the extra bulk. That is how you layer in the summer.

Linen will be your best friend

Actually, any breathable fabric will make getting dressed immediately easier. Think a cotton poplin, linen, or a lightweight rayon that will breathe and not stick to you. Anything polyester or heavy will stay trapped against your skin, no matter how “summery” the piece looks. Always check the fabric before you get dressed if you’re unsure. One of my favorite linen options is this matching set that you can easily breakup and wear separately. There is also a more budget friendly option (top and pants) that I share with clients. I also have been living in and loving these linen pants with a thin cotton halter. For my professional girls, linen can still look polished and feel cool, like this very chic button down paired with your favorite skirt or trouser.

A few notes: remember to stick to the classics so you can keep it simple! You can build your outfit around one piece (like your shoes) and style the look based off how you’re feeling. Play around with different accessories, textures and pops of color to keep it fresh for the summer!

Before we get into the formulas, let’s dive into some of my favorite things at the moment that are not clothing related… Starting with this hair oil that I use when it’s wet or dry to protect from heat and tame the frizz (use code ALEX15); I also have been loving these eye patches for a little brightening (use code ALEX15); for hair growth, I swear by this LED red light helmet that I’ve been using for about 4 weeks now and am already seeing a little new growth !! (use code ALEXLAMB); this cleanser has been in my rotation and it leaves my skin so fresh and clean feeling; lastly, for an extra bit of nutrition, I add this super greens powder to mine and my kids smoothies, it is so good — my recipe is bananas, strawberries, a scoop of the powder, milk, yogurt, peanut butter and a little water.

Now we can get into the formulas! Just a reminder to use these ideas and apply to what you have in your closet! Don’t have a matching set, go monochromatic! Missing a tailored short, swap for a denim. Use what you have in your closet to create looks that reflect you and your style!

10 outfit formulas to keep you stylish and cool all summer long:

1. T-shirt + tailored shorts + ballet flat + raffia/summer bag + anklet and fun jewelry. These are a great tailored short if you’re in need of one or you can swap for a denim!

2. Tank or tee + linen pant + flat sandal. This is a great linen pant option for a tailored look that you can wear for work or just with a belt. My favorite summer sandal got an upgrade!

3. Midi or long dress + cropped cardigan for your shoulders (or if it’s extra chilly, throw on a bomber) + kitten heel or sandal + beaded bag + chunky jewelry and sunglasses. I love this anklet to pair with my flip flops and summer sandals.

4. Matching set (top + shorts or pants) + flip flops + raffia bag + swim (if needed). That set I just linked is so good, how lucky are we to have found it!! I just love the versatility of a matching set because of all the different combinations you can create plus they’re great to throw on in a pinch.

5. Button down or tank (for a more causal look) + linen pants + slingback + slickback hair and simple jewelry. Thinking this for a summer-ized work look. You can do a heel or a flat and still be professional.

6. Tank or tee + light wash jeans or shorts + flat sandal + scarf around your waist or bag + coordinating bag color to your shoes. You don’t need the scarf around your waist but it does add a fun element to the look! This is a great neutral scarf and I also love this for a pop of color.

7. Halter tank or tee + silk shorts + heeled sandal for a night look or flip flop for more casual + fun jewelry + sunglasses. If you’re not into the shorts with heels look, then you can easily swap for a flat sandal or a longer pant.

8. Bikini + matching set + flip flop + raffia bag + raffia hat + fun accessories. If you’re not heading to the beach you can still wear this look as is! This is my favorite packable hat and this I love for more sun coverage.

9. One piece bathing suit (or bodysuit) + linen pant or shorts + flip flops or sandals + raffia hat, bag and sunglasses. I love this swimsuit for a pool or beach day and also wear it as a bodysuit for a non-water day!

10. Mini dress + flat sandal + sunglasses + coordinating bag. When you’re dressing proportionately in the summer, try pairing similar colored accessories together to bring the look together.

*Bonus casual look:
linen button down + active shorts + flip flop + giant sunglasses + raffia bag. Just for when it’s too hot to think but you still want to look somewhat put together!

Pro Styling Tips

• Tuck In. Even a half-tuck changes the whole shape of an outfit. If something feels off, try tucking your shirt into your bottoms first before changing the piece.

• Pick one statement piece. Whether it’s a pop of color in your clothes or a fun piece of jewelry, style your outfit around that one piece and keep the rest of your look simple. It will look like you know what you’re doing when you styled your look!

• White always works. If you’ve been avoiding white because of stains or dirt, don’t stress! That’s what laundry is for. White is the easiest and my favorite summer neutral that makes everything look more intentional (and tan). Speaking of being tan, this is my favorite self tanner!

I love this necklace as a fun summer accessory with a halter style dress or top! Or even just a simple tee.
