I went on to serve our country in the U.S. Army. I was in a convoy in Fallujah when an IED exploded directly into my Humvee. I was hit with shrapnel in the leg and shoulder, shrapnel I still carry with me to this day

I earned a Purple Heart that day. But more importantly, I learned a lot about service and sacrifice.

I never planned to run for the United States Senate. But my time in the Army taught me to never back down from a fight. I continue my services to protect the freedoms we all fought for.

While serving as Florida’s Attorney General, Ashley Moody approved the transfer of a $10 million fund of taxpayer money, designated to expand health care for Florida kids, to the Hope Florida Foundation.

That money was then funneled to PACs controlled by Governor Ron DeSantis’ top allies for the 2024 election.

Shortly after the election, Ashley Moody was rewarded with a U.S. Senate seat.

This is textbook corruption. Even a Republican lawmaker said he is “confident crimes occurred.” Now with the midterms in less than 100 days, Moody is refusing to answer basic questions like “how much did you know?” and “when did you know it?”

The people of Florida deserve a Senator committed to accountability — not currying favors with the political elites. If Ashley Moody refuses to stand up to corruption, then it’s time to make her scheme backfire.

When Alex first talked to me about running, I thought he was crazy. I said no. Actually, I said a lot of words I will not repeat here and then a loud and emphatic no. I said no for many months.

I have truly never been happier, and I did not want to lose that. But loving a place also means being willing to fight for it when it is not being served well.

For Alex and me, this is not about ambition or power. This is about not wanting to look back and think we could have done more when it mattered. It is about choosing to stand up for what is right.

I did not say yes because I suddenly felt brave or because my fears disappeared. I said yes because this moment demands more from all of us.

Today, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence and the founding of our great republic. Two and a half centuries is but a brief moment in humanity’s timeline; nevertheless, the impact of the United States on civilization has been nothing short of monumental.

This great country of ours has done more to elevate mankind in those 250 years than any other nation in history. Throughout our struggle to establish our place in the world, we also committed ourselves to values that served the greater good of humanity. Through innovation, the defense of freedom, and the mastery of some of history’s highest virtues, the United States ushered in the age of democracy and has enabled billions to shake off tyranny and discover self-rule. In the era we shaped, the United States became both the greatest country in the world and something the world had never quite seen before: a great power that delivers progress to all, understanding our own strength as a gift to be shared rather than a weapon to be wielded.

This is not an abstraction to me. My family came to this country as refugees, fleeing authoritarian persecution with nothing but the belief that America was different and that the promise of the American dream was within reach of all who reached its shores. The United States confirmed that belief and gave my family, and millions like us, the chance to become Americans — to serve our nation, to prosper, to contribute to our shared society, and to belong to something greater than ourselves. Through hard work, I went from an immigrant refugee child to serving in the White House. My career of service spanned more than 21 years in the United States Army, serving in the most dangerous corners of the world as an infantry officer and diplomat. My three brothers and I understood from an early age that the ideals on which this country was founded were worth defending.

As a patriotic American, I embrace our accomplishments, and on this 250th anniversary, I resolve to help build a more perfect union. I recognize that we have often fallen short; we have stumbled, we have faltered, and we have broken promises. Too many Americans remain outside the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This anniversary should be a reminder of how far we have come, as well as a revitalization of our commitment to our founding ideals.

I urge all of us to take stock of what we have built and given to the world and what we must leave for future generations. American power and sacrifice sent 20th-century fascism to an early grave and laid the foundations for a peaceful and prosperous world. That power was built on the unity of our citizenry.

Today, we face many threats beyond our shores but some of our greatest dangers lie at home, where the loudest voices on the fringes of society push for further division and discord. These extremes embrace discredited ideologies, from communism to fascism. They do not respect our history, nor do they embrace our success or recognize our values. They do not reflect the “silent majority” and only seek to tear us apart. It is our choice to reject these un-American extremes, just as we choose today to come together and celebrate our independence. Today, the United States faces a choice between a recommitment to our values or the unraveling of our beautiful experiment with democracy.

The long arc of the past 250 years and the future of this nation belongs to us — the patriotic majority — if we claim it.

Today’s celebration is an opportunity for reflection on America’s history and a chance to shape the future that lays ahead. On this 250th anniversary, I ask us all to consider the values that will guide us and how we may deliver a brighter future for the shining city on a hill.

But I wanted you to see this serious development: In a huge win for Republicans, the Supreme Court just slashed a major campaign finance law.

If you thought money in politics was already bad, it’s about to get ten times worse. Let me explain.

Right now, federal law limits the amount you can donate to federal campaigns like mine. That’s good because it means an ultra-wealthy billionaire can’t just swoop in and buy an election. For a campaign to be competitive, it needs to have a grassroots base.

Sounds like common sense right? Republicans don’t think so. The GOP brought this lawsuit to the Supreme Court because they rely much heavier on large-dollar donors — and thought their donors deserved to spend much more to influence our elections.

Six Supreme Court justices just green lit their plan. This decision means that party committees in Washington D.C. (which can raise hundreds of thousands of dollars more) will be allowed to coordinate and spend unlimited amounts of money directly with federal candidates. Donald Trump posted that this was a “BIG WIN” within minutes of the ruling…which should tell you all you need you to know.

FIGHT BACK

Now here’s what this will mean in practice. The November midterms are less than 150 days away. Even more large-dollar money is going to pour into our race to protect Ashley Moody. The only way I can overcome their attacks and win this race is with EVEN MORE grassroots support.

“Dad, I’m sitting here today in the U.S. Capitol. Talking to our elected leaders is proof that you made the right decision 40 years ago to leave the Soviet Union to come here to America in search of a better life for our family. Do not worry. I will be fine for telling the truth.”

I knew that I was assuming a lot of risk by challenging the most powerful person in the world. He was a spiteful man and would use everything in his power to exact revenge. But I had confidence that I could tell the truth. I knew that this is America — and here, right matters.

Many people told me to keep my head down. Donald Trump was a spiteful man who would do everything in his power to tear me down if I spoke the truth about his corruption and abuse of power.

But as the son of a family that immigrated to America to escape tyranny, I sure as hell wasn’t going to bow down to a wannabe tyrant.

I testified before Congress to stand up for the Constitution that I swore to protect. This led to the president unleashing a reign of terror and retribution not just against my family and me, but against all of us.

Today, our country is in chaos. We are in a dark chapter of American history, one that echoes early stages of authoritarian power consolidation seen elsewhere.

Never-ending wars. Rampant corruption. Costs on everything through the roof.

Meanwhile, my opponent is throwing gasoline on the fire. Ashley Moody was installed by MAGA and their billionaire allies to be a rubber stamp for their radical agenda. She screwed Florida homeowners by caving to the big insurance companies, supported this administration that gutted disaster relief for communities trying to rebuild, and traded over a million dollars in her corporate stock last year while she had access to insider information only Congress gets.

She’s not Florida’s Senator. She’s theirs.

Trump may have ended my military service, but he will never shake my love and commitment to this country. That is why I am running for the United States Senate in Florida. It’s time we had a leader who will fight for our democracy, put a check on an outlaw president, and make sure that every American has a fair chance at prosperity.

Florida is the most important Senate race in these midterm elections. A win here, in his own backyard, would be the ultimate rebuke to Trump. And it’s very likely that my race will decide whether Donald Trump and his cronies get another two years of unchecked power. We have the ability to stop this madness…but only if we all choose to fight back today.
