But what we really want is a home that works.

A home where you’re not constantly moving things around to make space. Where you don’t have to fight with a cupboard every morning. Where there’s somewhere sensible to put the post, the shoes, the bags, the laundry… and all those things that somehow appear from nowhere.

Good interior design isn’t just about how a room looks.

It’s about how it feels to live in it.

So, if your home is looking lovely but somehow still feels a little bit… difficult, here are some simple ways to make it work harder for you.

1. Start with how you actually live

This sounds obvious, but it’s one of the most important places to start.

Forget how you think you’re supposed to use a room and look at how you actually use it.

Do you eat dinner on the sofa? Work at the kitchen table? Dump your handbag by the front door? Get dressed in the spare room because your bedroom is too cramped?

There’s no right or wrong way to live in your home.

The trick is to design around your real life, rather than trying to force your life into a picture-perfect floor plan.

2. Pay attention to the things that annoy you

Your daily frustrations are actually incredibly useful design information.

That drawer that’s impossible to open because the handle catches on the cupboard next to it?

The pile of shoes permanently blocking the hallway?

The dining table that’s always covered in paperwork?

The bathroom where you have to reach over the loo to get to the toilet roll?

These little annoyances might seem insignificant, but they add up.

If something irritates you every single day, ask yourself: could the layout, storage or furniture solve this?

Often, the answer is yes.

3. Give everything a home

A functional home doesn’t necessarily need more storage.

It needs better storage.

Think about the things that regularly end up lying around. Keys. Chargers. School bags. Shoes. Cleaning products. Dog leads. Remote controls. The mysterious collection of receipts that seems to live permanently on the kitchen worktop.

If something doesn’t have a home, it will find one.

And that home is usually the nearest available surface.

Work out what needs to be stored, where you naturally use it, and how easy it needs to be to access.

The best storage is the storage you’ll actually use.

4. Think about the flow of a room

A room can have all the right furniture and still feel awkward.

Why?

Because good design is also about movement.

Can you comfortably walk around the sofa? Can cupboard doors open properly? Can you pull a dining chair out without hitting the wall? Can two people use the kitchen at the same time without performing an elaborate dance around each other?

These things matter.

Before buying another piece of furniture, take a step back and look at how you’re moving through the room.

Sometimes the answer isn’t adding something.

It’s taking something away.

5. Make everyday things easy to reach

There’s a reason we all have that one kitchen cupboard filled with things we haven’t used since 2017.

If you use something every day, it shouldn’t require a treasure hunt to find it.

Keep frequently used items within easy reach and reserve the harder-to-access spaces for things you use less often.

This is useful in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms, but it applies throughout the house.

Good functionality should make life easier (not turn opening a cupboard into an upper-body workout).

6. Make friends with your awkward spaces

Every home has them.

The strange little alcove. The bit under the stairs. The wall that’s too narrow for a standard piece of furniture. The corner that seems to serve absolutely no purpose.

But awkward spaces can be some of the most useful.

A shallow run of shelving. A built-in desk. A bench with hidden storage. A tall cupboard. A reading nook.

You don’t always need to find a standard piece of furniture to fit the space.

Sometimes you need to make the space work for you instead.

7. Don’t underestimate lighting

Lighting can completely change how functional a room feels.

One ceiling light in the middle of the room isn’t always going to cut it.

Think about what you’re actually doing in each space.

Cooking needs good task lighting. Reading needs focused light. A hallway needs enough light to find your keys without turning on every light in the house. A living room might need softer, layered lighting for evenings.

Try to think in layers: ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.

It makes a room more flexible and, as a bonus, much more inviting.

8. Choose furniture that earns its place

Especially if you don’t have loads of space, every piece of furniture needs to justify its existence.

Could your coffee table have storage underneath?

Could a bench double up as seating and shoe storage?

Could your bedside tables have drawers rather than being purely decorative?

Could a sofa be positioned to create a useful division between two areas?

I LOVE furnishings that double-up as storage!

This doesn’t mean everything has to be clever or multifunctional.

Sometimes a beautiful chair is simply a beautiful chair.

But when space is tight, furniture that works a little harder can make a huge difference.

9. Create zones

One room doesn’t necessarily have to have one job.

A kitchen can be somewhere to cook, eat, work and socialise.

A bedroom can include a dressing area or a small workspace.

A living room can have a TV zone, a reading corner and somewhere to work.

The key is to make those different uses feel intentional.

Furniture placement, lighting, rugs, shelving and colour can all help define different zones without physically dividing the room.

You don’t always need another wall.

Sometimes you just need a little more thought about what’s happening where.

10. Remember that functional doesn’t mean full

This one is important.

When we talk about making a home more functional, it can be tempting to think about how to squeeze more into it.

More storage.

More furniture.

More shelves.

More baskets.

More stuff.

But sometimes the most functional thing you can do is remove something.

A room needs breathing space.

If you’re constantly squeezing past furniture, opening cupboards around other furniture, or moving piles of things just to use the thing underneath them, your home might simply have too much in it.

Functionality is about making your space work better, not making it hold more.

So, where should you start?

You don’t need to redesign your entire house tomorrow.

Start with one room.

Walk into it and ask yourself:

What works well here?

What doesn’t?

What do I do in this room that the room isn’t currently making easy?

And perhaps most importantly:

What annoys me?

Because those little everyday frustrations are often the biggest clues.

Your home should support the way you live.

It should make the everyday stuff easier, not harder.

Why does it look grey?

Or green?

Or, somehow, slightly lilac?

Welcome to the wonderful world of British light.

One of the things I think we forget when decorating is that our homes are not blank boxes.

Every room has its own personality.

And a huge part of that personality comes from which way it faces.

First, look out of the window

Not at the furniture.

Not at the paint chart.

Look outside.

Is your room facing north? South? East? West?

Before you choose a colour, it is worth understanding what the light is going to do to it.

And this is where decorating gets much more interesting.

North-facing rooms

North-facing rooms tend to have cooler, softer light.

They don’t get that lovely direct hit of sunshine that makes a south-facing room glow.

For years, we’ve been told that north-facing rooms are the problem rooms.

I don’t agree.

I think they’re often the most atmospheric.

The trick is to stop trying to make them something they’re not.

Instead of desperately trying to make a north-facing room feel sunny, lean into the softness.

Think warm whites.

Mushrooms.

Soft taupes.

Warm greys.

Earthy greens.

Deep, comforting colours can look particularly beautiful here because the light is gentle and consistent.

And if you’re tempted by a crisp, brilliant white?

I’d pause.

It can sometimes make a north-facing room feel colder than it actually is.

South-facing rooms

Oh, the south-facing room.

The one everyone wants.

And yes, they are wonderful.

They’re bright. They’re warm. They can feel incredibly generous.

But here’s the thing.

Too much sun can be just as tricky as too little.

Colours can become much stronger.

Warm tones can become warmer.

Pale colours can suddenly feel almost luminous.

And anything with a hint of yellow can go very… yellow.

So this is where softer, cooler tones can be your friend.

Blues.

Greens.

Soft pinks.

Chalky whites.

Colours that might feel a little cold in a north-facing room can become incredibly balanced in strong southern light.

East-facing rooms

Morning people will understand this room.

East-facing rooms get that beautiful early light.

Fresh.

Golden.

Hopeful.

And then, as the day goes on, the light changes.

By afternoon, the room can feel much cooler.

So think about when you actually use the room.

A bedroom that catches the morning sun can feel completely different from an east-facing sitting room that you mainly use in the evening.

The direction of the room matters.

West-facing rooms

And then there are west-facing rooms.

The late bloomers.

They can feel relatively subdued in the morning and then come alive in the afternoon.

And that evening light?

Absolutely gorgeous.

Warm.

Golden.

Sometimes almost honey-coloured.

If you have a dining room or sitting room that faces west, notice what happens around 4pm, 5pm, 6pm.

That might be the most beautiful moment in the room.

And perhaps that’s the moment you should be decorating for.

But here’s the bit I really want you to remember

There is no “best” direction.

There is only the direction your room faces.

I’ve seen people try to force a dark room into being bright.

They paint everything white.

They add mirrors.

They add more white.

And somehow the room still doesn’t feel right.

Sometimes the answer isn’t to fight the light.

It’s to work with it.

A dark little snug can be dark.

A west-facing dining room can glow in the evening.

An east-facing bedroom can be soft and quiet after breakfast.

And a south-facing kitchen can handle colours you might never get away with elsewhere.

This is why I always think you should look at paint colours in your actual room.

Not just on a tiny square of card.

Look at them in the morning.

Look again at lunchtime.

Then again in the evening.

Because the colour isn’t changing.

The light is.

And that is one of the loveliest things about decorating a home.

We’re not just choosing colours.

We’re choosing how we want our rooms to feel as the day moves through them.

So next time you’re standing in a room wondering why something doesn’t quite work…

I’m not a huge fan of the word “trend”.

It can make us feel like we need to constantly change our homes to keep up.

And I don’t think that’s what good interior design is about.

But I do love looking at where interiors are heading.

The colours becoming more popular. The materials we’re craving. The way our relationship with our homes is changing.

So, with that in mind, here are my predictions for 2027.

And I think it’s going to be a good one.

1. Warmth is here to stay

I think we can safely say goodbye to cold, clinical interiors.

The move towards warmer homes isn’t going anywhere.

Think creamy whites. Warm stone. Chocolate brown. Terracotta. Muted greens.

Basically, colours that make you want to put the kettle on.

We’re craving rooms that feel comfortable and welcoming.

Not perfect.

Not overly polished.

Just lovely to be in.

2. Brown is having a moment

Actually, brown has been having a moment for a while now.

And I think 2027 will take it even further.

From deep chocolate walls to walnut furniture and warm timber details, brown is bringing depth back into our homes.

And I love it.

It’s sophisticated without feeling formal.

Cosy without being cutesy.

And it works beautifully with so many other colours.

Especially those soft stones, dusty blues and sage greens I keep coming back to.

3. Character over perfection

This might be my favourite prediction.

I think we’re moving further away from homes that look like they’ve come straight from a showroom.

And towards homes that feel like… well, homes.

Vintage pieces.

Inherited furniture.

Art that means something.

Books.

Odd little objects picked up on holiday.

The chair you found in an antique shop and absolutely did not need.

That’s the good stuff.

A home should tell your story.

It shouldn’t look like everyone else’s.

4. Kitchens will get softer

For a long time, kitchens have been very much about clean lines and sleek finishes.

But I think we’re going to see them become softer and more relaxed.

Painted cabinetry.

Natural timber.

Open shelving.

Freestanding furniture.

Antique-style hardware.

More colour.

Less “this is definitely a kitchen”.

More “This is a beautiful room that happens to have an oven in it”.

And honestly?

I’m here for it.

5. Pattern comes back

We’ve been playing it relatively safe for a while.

But I think pattern is ready for a comeback.

Stripes.

Checks.

Floral prints.

Little doses of something unexpected.

Not necessarily head-to-toe pattern.

Just enough to make a room feel interesting.

A patterned chair.

A beautiful lampshade.

Wallpaper in a small room.

A curtain fabric that makes you smile.

Pattern brings personality.

And we could all use a little more of that.

6. Natural materials, but with a twist

Wood, stone, linen, wool and rattan aren’t going anywhere.

But I think we’re going to see them used in more interesting ways.

Less “natural interiors” as a look.

More natural materials mixed with colour, pattern and contrast.

Think chunky timber next to glossy paint.

Linen alongside velvet.

Stone with aged brass.

Old wood with something wonderfully modern.

It’s the contrast that makes a room sing.

7. Smaller, cosier spaces

For years, bigger seemed to mean better.

Open-plan everything.

Huge kitchens.

Massive living spaces.

But I think we’re beginning to appreciate the magic of smaller rooms.

A little reading corner.

A snug.

A tiny home office.

A dining room where everyone actually sits around the table.

Rooms designed for doing something, rather than simply looking impressive.

And I think that’s a really positive shift.

8. The return of the “just because” room

This one might be wishful thinking.

But I’m hoping we bring back rooms that don’t have to justify themselves.

A room for reading.

A room for music.

A room for dinner parties.

A room that exists simply because you enjoy being there.

Not everything in our homes needs to be multifunctional.

Sometimes a room can just be lovely.

And that’s enough.

So, what does this mean for your home?

Probably not that you need to redecorate.

In fact, quite the opposite.

If you love your home, keep the bits you love.

Add rather than replace.

Paint rather than rip everything out.

Bring in texture.

Move things around.

Find something second-hand.

Hang the artwork you’ve been meaning to frame.

And if you’re making bigger changes, think beyond what is fashionable right now.

Ask yourself:

Will I still love this in five years?

That’s a much better question than:

Is this trending on Instagram?

Because the best interiors aren’t really about trends.

They’re about creating spaces that feel good to live in.

And if 2027 brings us more warmth, more personality and more individuality?

I think we’re heading in the right direction.

Designer Tip of the Week

Don’t follow a trend you don’t actually like.

Seriously.

If everyone suddenly starts painting their walls purple and you hate purple, you don’t need purple walls.

Take inspiration from trends.

Borrow the bits that speak to you.

Then make them your own.

Your home should be a reflection of you, not a moodboard of what’s currently popular.

While trends come and go (looking at you, millennial grey), some pairings have a quiet confidence that works year after year. They feel effortless rather than fashionable, which is exactly what I love when designing a home.

If you’re choosing colours for a room and feeling overwhelmed by endless paint charts, here are a few timeless combinations that will always earn their place.

Chocolate Brown + Light Stone

Rich chocolate brown has made a well-deserved comeback, and honestly, I’m here for it.

Paired with a soft, warm stone, it feels grounded, cosy and just a little bit luxurious.

Think dark timber furniture against creamy walls, linen upholstery, layered textures and warm lighting. It’s sophisticated without trying too hard.

This is a combination that whispers rather than shouts.

Sage Green + Warm White

If calm had a colour palette, this would be it.

Sage green brings the outside in without feeling overly rustic. Paired with a warm white, it creates rooms that feel fresh, relaxed and lived in.

Perfect for kitchens, bedrooms, or anywhere you want to take a deep breath the moment you walk in.

Add natural wood, woven textures and plenty of plants, and you’ve basically bottled serenity.

Dusty Blue + Soft Stone

Dusty blue is one of those colours that somehow manages to feel both classic and contemporary.

When balanced with soft stone or warm neutrals, it creates elegant spaces without being formal. It’s particularly beautiful in living rooms and bedrooms where you want a sense of calm but still plenty of character.

It’s the design equivalent of your favourite cashmere jumper.

Burgundy + Blush

Deep burgundy might sound bold, but paired with a soft blush or muted pink, it becomes unexpectedly timeless.

The richness of burgundy gives depth, while the softer tones stop it from feeling too heavy.

This combination works beautifully in dining rooms, reading corners or anywhere that deserves a little drama (the good kind).

Navy + Warm White

Some classics are classics for a reason.

Navy and warm white have been working together for decades, and they’re showing no signs of stopping.

Navy adds structure and depth, while warm white keeps everything feeling light and welcoming.

Add brass, oak or natural linen, and you’ve got a look that feels polished but completely liveable.

When people think about hiring an interior designer, they often imagine full-scale renovations or completely new schemes. But sometimes, the most impactful transformations begin with something much simpler: colour.

This project began as a colour consultation for a bedroom that no longer reflected how my client wanted to feel in the space. The room had been decorated in deep navy tones, from the walls to the soft furnishings. While it had once felt cosy and cocooning, over time it began to feel heavy and enclosed.

The brief wasn’t to start again, but to create a calmer, softer atmosphere that felt restorative without losing character: a reminder that thoughtful design isn’t always about buying everything new.

Starting with a Conversation

Every project begins with listening.

Before looking at paint charts or fabrics, we talked about how the room was being used, how it felt at different times of day, and, perhaps most importantly, how my client wanted to feel when they walked through the door.

The answer was simple: calm.

That single word became the foundation for every decision that followed.

Finding the Right Colour Story

Moving away from navy didn’t mean moving towards stark white. In fact, that would have felt just as disconnected from the warmth my client was craving.

Instead, we explored soft olive greens and light stone tones. These colours have a wonderful way of bringing nature indoors. They feel timeless rather than trend-led, and they shift beautifully throughout the day as natural light changes.

Colour is never chosen in isolation. It’s influenced by the direction a room faces, the quality of light, existing flooring, furniture and even how someone wants to experience the space emotionally.

The Details Matter

Once the palette was agreed, I helped source a handful of carefully selected pieces to complement the new scheme.

Rather than replacing everything, we focused on thoughtful updates that would work harmoniously with the new colours. A new lamp, different textiles and accessories helped to bridge the gap between old and new, allowing a room to evolve rather than start over.

Watching the Transformation

There’s always a moment when fresh paint goes onto the walls, and everything begins to click into place.

The room immediately felt lighter: not simply because the colours were paler, but because the entire atmosphere had shifted.

This project was a wonderful reminder that thoughtful interiors don’t always require a complete overhaul. Sometimes, the biggest transformation begins with asking one simple question:

How do you want your home to make you feel?

It’s where yesterday ends and tomorrow begins. It should be a place that tells your nervous system, you can relax now. But many bedrooms do exactly the opposite. They’re cluttered, over-lit, filled with technology, and treated as somewhere to simply put the bed.

When people think about redesigning a bedroom, they usually start shopping for a new bedframe or bedside tables.

I start somewhere else.

I ask, How do you want this room to feel when you walk into it at 10 pm?

Calm?
Quiet?
Safe?
Warm?
Uncluttered?

That feeling should guide every design decision.

Let your lighting work with your body

The biggest mistake I see is relying on one bright ceiling light.

Bedrooms need layers of light.

Soft bedside lamps, warm wall lights, dimmers, or gentle accent lighting create an environment that naturally encourages your brain to slow down.

Think less operating theatre, more boutique hotel.

Warm bulbs (around 2700K) instantly make a room feel more relaxing than cool white lighting.

Colour is more powerful than we realise

Not every bedroom needs to be beige.

But it should avoid colours that constantly stimulate your attention.

Muted greens, warm taupes, soft blues, earthy terracottas and gentle neutrals tend to create a more settled atmosphere than stark white walls or highly saturated colours.

The goal isn’t to make the room boring.

It’s to make it feel peaceful.

Texture creates comfort

One of the easiest ways to make a bedroom feel luxurious isn’t spending more money.

It’s adding texture.

Natural linen bedding.

A wool throw.

A soft rug underfoot.

Layered curtains.

Timber furniture with character.

Our brains respond to tactile environments. Even before we touch these materials, they communicate warmth and comfort.

Declutter your sightlines

Visual clutter is still clutter.

Laundry baskets are overflowing.

Open shelving full of random objects.

Charging cables everywhere.

A chair that’s become the clothes chair.

Every item competes for your attention.

You don’t need a minimalist bedroom. But, you do need somewhere your eyes can rest.

If you can reduce what you see, you’ll often reduce how mentally “busy” the room feels.

Think beyond aesthetics

A restful bedroom isn’t only about styling.

It’s about function.

Can you easily reach your bedside lamp?

Do blackout curtains actually block early morning light?

Does your mattress suit the way you sleep?

Can fresh air circulate?

Does your storage make it easy to put things away?

Beautiful design should quietly solve problems before you even notice them.

The hotel test

Ask yourself one question.

If this bedroom belonged to a boutique hotel, would you look forward to spending the night here?

Hotels are designed to help us switch off.

At home, we deserve that same feeling.

Not because our bedrooms need to be expensive.

But because they should support one of the most important things we do every day: rest.

A final thought

Interior design often gets reduced to paint colours and cushions.

But the best interiors improve the way we live.

A well-designed bedroom won’t solve every sleep problem.

Every year, the interiors world goes a little bit trend-crazy.

One minute, everything is boucle.

The next is limewash walls.

Then suddenly everyone is talking about “quiet luxury,” “warm minimalism,” or whatever new aesthetic has just been coined on Instagram.

As an interior designer, I find trends interesting, but not always useful.

Because most trends aren’t really about how people live.

They’re about how things photograph.

And there’s a big difference between the two.

So rather than another list of fleeting aesthetics, I wanted to share the shifts I believe are actually sticking around.

The ones that feel less like moments… and more like long-term changes in how we design and experience our homes.

1. Homes That Feel Lived-In Again

For a long time, interiors were heading in a very controlled direction.

Perfectly styled shelves.

Neutral palettes.

Minimal surfaces.

Homes that looked more like showrooms than places people actually lived.

But something has shifted.

We’re starting to see a return to personality.

Books left out.

Art that doesn’t perfectly match the sofa.

Objects collected over time rather than bought in one shopping trip.

People rely on a single light source to do everything.

For years, we’ve been fed a steady diet of interiors that looked as though nobody had ever actually lived in them.

The cushions were karate-chopped into perfect triangles. Coffee tables held precisely three books and a decorative object. Kitchens contained no evidence of cooking.

This week, I noticed something refreshing.

Several homes I’ve seen seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

Books are stacked randomly.

Children’s drawings pinned to walls.

Collections are displayed unapologetically.

Tables with actual paperwork on them.

It’s almost as if people are remembering that homes are supposed to reflect lives rather than function as film sets.

As a designer, I find this hugely encouraging. The most memorable homes I’ve ever visited weren’t perfect. They were personal.

You could tell who lived there within seconds.

That’s infinitely more interesting than another beige room with a boucle chair.

2. Brown is Having a Moment

I realise this may not sound particularly exciting.

Brown.

The colour of tree bark. Cardboard boxes. Tea stains.

Yet suddenly it’s everywhere.

Chocolate velvet sofas.

Walnut cabinetry.

Rich tobacco-coloured walls.

Deep espresso wood finishes.

For years, grey dominated everything. Then beige staged a takeover. Now brown seems to be emerging as the grown-up alternative.

And honestly?

I’m here for it.

Brown creates a sense of depth and comfort that many cooler neutrals simply can’t achieve. Used well, it feels grounding, sophisticated and slightly nostalgic.

Used badly, of course, it can look like a 1970s tax office.

As with most things in design, context is everything.

3. The Curious Case of the Giant Kitchen Island

I saw a kitchen this week with an island so large it could probably be seen from space.

It was magnificent.

It was ridiculous.

It raised questions.

At what point does a kitchen island stop being a kitchen island and become a small continent?

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the appeal. Islands have become the social centre of many homes. They’re where people cook, work, chat, eat, charge devices and occasionally complete homework.

But somewhere along the way, they’ve become symbols of aspiration.

The bigger the island, the greater the perceived success.

I’m not entirely convinced that’s true.

Sometimes the most functional kitchens I’ve designed have been surprisingly compact.

Space isn’t always the answer. Thoughtful planning usually is.

4. Lamps Are Getting Weird Again

One of my favourite developments.

For a while, lighting became extremely sensible.

Minimal.

Discreet.

Architectural.

Now I’m seeing lamps that look like sculptures, mushrooms, pieces of modern art, or objects recovered from another planet.

And thank goodness.

Lighting should be practical, yes. But it should also be playful.

A room can be beautifully designed and still feel forgettable if every light fitting is trying desperately not to be noticed.

Sometimes, the object that makes a room memorable is the slightly odd lamp in the corner.

The one guests ask about.

The one nobody can quite identify.

Those pieces create character.

5. People Are Falling Back in Love With Wood

Not engineered perfection.

Not flawless veneers.

Actual wood.

Wood with grain.

Wood with knots.

Wood with imperfections.

I think this reflects something bigger happening culturally.

What people notice when they enter your home

There’s a moment - usually within the first few seconds - when someone steps into your home and forms a feeling about it.

Not a full opinion. Not a critique. Just a quiet, immediate sense of what this place is like.

People aren’t analysing your home.

Stand at your front door.

Walk in as if you’ve never been there before.

Notice where your eye goes first. Notice if you hesitate. Notice what feels unresolved.

Those first five seconds will tell you everything.

Because that’s exactly what everyone else is experiencing too.

A few things that quietly change how your home is experienced

Not more things. Just the right ones.

Good lighting is usually the first thing people underestimate. Something as simple as a soft table lamp can completely change how a room is read in the evening. Brands like Pooky or Ferm Living do this well: nothing overly dramatic, just warm, considered light.

Rugs are another. The difference between a rug that’s slightly too small and one that actually anchors the space is disproportionate. It’s often what makes a room feel either fragmented or whole. The Rug Company is more of an investment, but even mid-range options from West Elm UK can do the job if the scale is right.

Furniture matters less than people think—but proportion matters more than they expect. A well-sized sofa or table will do more for a room than several smaller pieces trying to compensate. Places like HAY or Soho Home tend to get that balance right.

And then there are the smaller things. The objects you don’t notice immediately, but would feel the absence of if they were gone. The Conran Shop or even Etsy are good places to find pieces that feel a little less uniform, a little more specific.

None of this is about filling a space.

It’s about making it easier to read.

Most people think making a room feel bigger requires something drastic.
Knocking down a wall. Painting everything white. Buying smaller furniture.

It doesn’t.

In most cases, the feeling of space has very little to do with square footage. It comes down to something far less obvious:

How clearly the room is read.

Because when a space feels cramped, it’s rarely because it is small.
It’s because your eye doesn’t know where to go.

The real problem isn’t size, it’s visual noise

Walk into a room that feels small, and you’ll usually find the same thing:

• Too many competing focal points

• Furniture breaking up the floor in awkward ways

• Objects sitting at similar heights and depths

• No clear “centre of gravity”

Your eye jumps from one thing to another, never settling. The room feels busy, even if it isn’t full.

And when a space feels visually busy, it reads as smaller than it is.

So instead of asking “How do I make this room bigger?”
The better question is:

“How do I make this room easier to understand?”

The simplest shift: create one clear zone

If there’s one move that works almost every time, it’s this:

Stop treating the room as multiple small moments. Start treating it as one defined space.

Most people unintentionally fragment their rooms.
A chair here. A side table there. A lamp floating on its own. Everything is slightly disconnected.

It makes the room feel like it’s made up of pieces, rather than a whole.

Instead, pull things together.

• Let the sofa, chairs, and table form a single, coherent grouping

• Anchor it with a rug that actually holds everything, not one that sits awkwardly underneath just the front legs

• Reduce the gaps between elements, so they relate to each other

You’re not adding space.
You’re removing fragmentation.

And that alone can make a room feel noticeably larger.

Let the edges breathe

Here’s where people get it backwards:

When a room feels small, the instinct is to push everything to the edges.

Sofa against the wall. Chairs tucked away. Nothing is interrupting the perimeter.

It should make the room feel bigger.

It usually does the opposite.

Because when everything hugs the walls, the centre of the room becomes undefined.
It feels like leftover space, not intentional space.

Try the opposite.

• Pull the sofa slightly forward

• Let a chair sit partially in the room

• Allow negative space to exist around the furniture, not just in the middle

What you’re doing is shaping the space, not just filling it.

And shaped space always feels larger than leftover space.

Fewer sightline interruptions

Another subtle one: what your eye can travel across.

In smaller rooms, every visual interruption matters.

• A bulky coffee table is blocking the view

• Multiple small objects breaking up surfaces

• Furniture legs that don’t allow light through

The more your eye has to stop, the smaller the room feels.

A few adjustments that make a disproportionate difference:

• Choose furniture that sits slightly higher off the ground (visible floor = perceived space)

• Simplify surfaces: group objects instead of scattering them

• Keep key sightlines clear, especially from the entrance

You’re not minimising the room.
You’re extending it (visually).

One palette, repeated

Colour matters, but not in the way people think.

It’s not about going all-white.
It’s about consistency.

When a room has too many disconnected tones (different woods, clashing fabrics, unrelated finishes), it creates visual stops. Each one breaks the flow.

Instead:

• Repeat tones across the room (a wood finish echoed in a frame, a fabric tone picked up in a cushion)

• Keep contrast intentional, not accidental

• Let materials relate to each other

When the palette is cohesive, the room reads as a single gesture rather than separate decisions.

And again, that reads as bigger.

The quiet role of lighting

Lighting doesn’t just make a room visible. It shapes how large it feels.

One central ceiling light tends to flatten everything.
It removes depth, and the room closes in.

Layered lighting does the opposite.

• A floor lamp creates a pool of light in one corner

• A table lamp softening another

• Shadows allowed to exist between

This creates depth: foreground, midground, background.

And depth is what gives a room a sense of expansion.

What actually makes a room feel bigger

It’s not:

• Less furniture

• White walls

• Extreme minimalism

It’s clarity.

A room feels bigger when:

• It has a clear structure

• Your eye can move through it easily

• Elements relate to each other instead of competing

In other words, when the space makes sense.

If you change one thing

Don’t start by buying anything.

Walk into your room and ask:

“What here feels disconnected?”

Then fix that.

Pull things together.
Edit what’s unnecessary.
Create one strong idea instead of five weaker ones.

You’ll probably find the room doesn’t need more space.

It just needed to be seen properly.
