Over the past month, my personal AI usage climbed about 72%. It came from a handful of new projects and all the work that comes with them: planning, troubleshooting, learning, and standing up cloud agents to run complex processes. Lesson 2: Cheaper and worse are not the same thing

I’d assumed the top tier models were worth the premium simply because they’re the best. What I learned is that “best” and “good enough for what I’m actually doing” are two very different bars. There’s now a whole class of newer, less hyped models that cost a tiny fraction of the flagship price and perform nearly as well on everyday work. Not on the hardest problems, but on the routine 90% of building, they’re basically indistinguishable. I’d been paying frontier prices for autocomplete level tasks. That’s like flying first class, at ten times the cost, for a five minute flight.

Lesson 3: Split the thinking from the doing

The single best habit I’ve picked up is using a smart model to plan and a cheaper one to execute. Planning is where quality matters most, because it’s where you figure out what to change, why and how.

So lately I’ve been using frontier models strictly for planning, and cheaper models for execution. Because the execution side saves me so much overall, it actually frees up budget for the expensive frontier models exactly where they earn their keep, which is planning. Once I separated those two jobs, my costs collapsed.

Lesson 4: Put a wall around your spending, on purpose

The reason my spend had run wild is that nothing was there to stop it. Usage based billing will happily let you spend forever. So I set hard caps: a fixed monthly ceiling that simply cannot be crossed, no matter what. I also stopped leaving projects on auto mode, because automatic is exactly how expensive models snuck back into some of my routine work. Now, even if I misconfigure something, the worst case is a small, known number. No more billing surprises.

Brightland invests heavily in packaging. Their bottles are objects people want on a counter but many brands stop there.

Brightland follows through with photography that complements their product packaging and brings their assortment to life. Products appear with curated, high-quality environments: outdoor tables, fresh flowers, wine glasses, and salads in progress. The imagery matches the packaging standard instead of dropping to generic white-background shots right after the unboxing moment. This may seem like a simple observation but many brands miss the full opportunity of leveraging their packaging to drive sales by stopping at just the main image.

Simple copy that lets the page breathe

Brightland does not try to explain everything on one screen. Product descriptions stay short. Often five sentences or fewer. Each sentence makes a clear point. No filler, no stacked adjectives.

In the age of both Search and AI discovery optimization, many brands are overloading their product pages with copy to drive indexing, discovery and ranking. The challenge is.. no one wants to read all of that.. and it often fuels high bounce rates for potential customers with dwindling attention.

Brightland’s PDP strategy is intentionally in opposition to that tactic. For example, the Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil description communicates exactly what makes the product special: it is a full-bodied, 100% extra virgin olive oil made from early hand-harvested Kalamata olives and cold-pressed in the Peloponnese, Greece. It conveys the product’s quality, origin, and limited availability without over-explaining.

Typography and spacing do the rest. Large product imagery, generous white space, and straightforward headings let the page breathe. More copy is not always more clarity.

Pairing guides that feel useful, not like content fluff

Every Brightland product ties into a pairing guide. Shoppers land on recipes that use the oil, vinegar, or honey they are considering.

Their copy strategy shows up throughout the site and comes to life again with Recipes. Recipe instructions stay simple. A two-sentence description. A short ingredient list. A few instruction steps broken into prep, marinate, and serve. No long blog preamble. No SEO padding.

The same brand that keeps ingredient labels simple and clear keeps recipe content short and sweet. The result is a resource shoppers actually use which drives brand affinity and a reason to return.

Gift collections built from the same catalog

Most Shopify stores organize products by product type and stop. Brightland extends their existing catalog by assorting items in creative ways that capture various buying intents.

Meta‘s Facebook Marketplace turns ten this year. Before it had its own tab in the Facebook app, people were already buying and selling inside Facebook Groups. That behavior grew into a standalone marketplace. Today, 430 million items get listed on Marketplace every month, and for many sellers it is no longer a one-time closet cleanout. Many have turned a side hustle into a small business and real income.

Meta’s response is Seller, a new app built specifically for people who sell on Marketplace regularly. Not the person listing a couch once. The reseller, vintage dealer, or side hustler who runs the business from their phone.

Seller is live on the App Store in the US for Marketplace sellers 18 and up. Existing listings, messages, and selling history sync over. Anything you post in Seller still shows up on Marketplace where buyers already browse.

What the app actually does

Seller is basically a home base for running a Marketplace business without digging through the main Facebook app.

When you open it, the home screen tells you what needs your attention: stuff to ship, buyers waiting on a reply, listings that might need a new price. Less scrolling, more “here’s what to do next.”

Listing is where the AI shows up. Upload photos and Meta fills in the title, description, suggested price, and category. There is also bulk listing if you are putting up multiple items at once.

Everything you have listed lives in one inventory view. Edit, relist, or pull something down without hunting through old posts.

Messages get their own inbox, grouped by item. If someone asks about a jacket, the whole conversation stays tied to that jacket. Simple idea, but it fixes one of the most annoying parts of selling online.

There is a performance section too: views, clicks, messages, and what sold. Enough data to price smarter and restock what people actually want.

Android and a web version are in testing. Meta says this is the first version, not the final one.

Why Meta is doing this now

Marketplace outgrew its early days. It is not just neighbors trading furniture anymore. Resellers, vintage dealers, and full-time side hustlers treat it like a sales channel.

Meta is following a pattern other commerce platforms already use. Buyers browse in one place. Sellers manage the business somewhere else. Etsy has Shop Manager. Amazon has Seller Central. Shopify has admin. Now Marketplace has Seller.

The bet is simple: if selling on Meta can pay bills, the tools should feel like work software, not a feature buried inside a social app.

What stands out

Three things worth noting, even if you never download the app.

AI is doing the boring part. Meta is not asking sellers to write copy. It is asking for photos and letting the model draft the listing. That is the direction a lot of commerce is heading: speed on the first pass, human judgment before it goes live.

Chat is organized around the product, not the person. On Marketplace, context is everything. “Is this still available?” only makes sense if you know which listing someone is talking about. Seller builds the inbox around that reality.

The home screen is a to-do list, not a trophy case. Ship this. Reply to that. Maybe drop the price on this one. For anyone running volume, that is more useful than a chart celebrating last week’s numbers.

Does this matter if you run a brand site?

Probably not tomorrow. If you sell on Shopify and never touch Marketplace, Seller is not replacing your stack.

But it is a signal. The biggest social marketplace in the world just said resale deserves its own product. AI listing tools, cleaner seller messaging, and inventory views are becoming baseline expectations, not nice-to-haves.

Some DTC brands already use Marketplace for sample sales, dead stock, or one-off drops. For them, a dedicated seller app is a step toward taking that channel seriously.

The takeaway

Facebook Marketplace started as a casual place to sell stuff locally. Meta is now building tools for the sellers who turned it into a business. Seller is the signal that Marketplace is not just a feature inside Facebook anymore. For serious sellers, it is its own thing.

The Topicals Rewards landing page opens on floating 3D coins rendered in Spline. It is playful, on-brand, and immediately signals that this is not a bolt-on loyalty widget.

Shopify themes handle commerce well. They do not always handle wonder. Tools like Spline let brands embed interactive 3D moments inside a standard storefront without rebuilding the whole stack. Topicals uses that to make rewards feel like part of the world they have already built, not a third-party afterthought.

A dedicated home for editorial video

High-quality video usually lives everywhere except its own destination: ads, product pages, social clips, email headers. Topicals gives premium film a dedicated Watch experience in the main nav, alongside Shop and Learn.

• Use the web for moments, not only transactions. Interactive layers like Spline can make a program or launch feel native to the brand.

• Give your best assets a room. Video, editorial, and campaign film deserve a dedicated venue when they are core to how you sell.

I still think that the traditional DTC website will have a purpose and likely serve the large majority of a brand’s audience, and that chat will function more as a sales channel rather than a replacement. But that’s just my belief as of today...

What is Universal Commerce Protocol?

I’ve been a writer since grade school and have been working in the e-commerce space since college. I’m excited to launch this Substack community on behalf of Nexus Commerce — an agency focused on supporting growing e-commerce brands on Shopify.

This space is where I’ll share ideas, insights, and observations to help you see things differently, and maybe inspire you to implement new strategies as you grow your own e-commerce brand.

Writing has always been a part of my life. I started in middle school writing about branding, marketing, fashion and culture for leisure. Writing gave me a safe haven as I grew into a young adult to explore ideas and have a genuine exchange with others who had similar interests. This led me to starting an online newspaper at my high school, participating in the Pre‑Collegiate Fellowship in Business and Investigative Journalism at USC, interning with The Charlotte Post and continuing writing for hobby through a personal blog.

As I moved deeper into e-commerce, my writing evolved to become clear, focused, and strategic, driven by the goal of helping clients understand and apply ideas that could grow their business. I sharpened that skill while working as a brand strategist at BBDO in San Francisco, and I continue to use it now as a way to communicate, inspire, and explore.

What I aim to bring here is that same spirit: clear and inspiring communication grounded in experience, shaped by curiosity, and dedicated to helping others grow.
