I hope you’re doing well and surviving this tropical climate. You know what I love to do, cook! But I refuse to cook in a sweltering kitchen. But I love to eat good food and refuse to have a crappy meal. So what do I do? Mostly tinned fish and SANDWICHES.

We have always had a goal of opening AH Deli, and it’s still very much in the works. But I am impatient; I hate waiting, and some may call me “ridiculously driven.” SO, I have started to secretly roll out some test sandwiches from our deli on a weekly basis. Dropping Thursdays at 11 and testing all sorts of fun things. This week’s is my all-time favorite sandwich. It’s loaded with veggies, a cool, creamy herbed cream cheese, and the bread- oh baby, she’s a hearty, seed-filled rye. Just like I loved growing up. We only make a few dozen, and they will sell out, so we have been hosting pre-orders. But don’t worry, we always reserve a few for day-of folks!

OK, that’s all. Grab a sandy, hit the beach, go for a swim. Life is hot and hard, but we aim to make it a little better every day!

It’s time again for our favorite topic of the month: WHAT’S NEW AND EXCITING?!

People keep lamenting to me that “summer is over,” and while, yes, the school calendar is creeping back in and suddenly everyone needs a backpack and a schedule and approximately 47 activities to attend...

I refuse.

The crowds are gone. The water is still warm. The sun is still shining. I AM A DAMN MERMAID. And there is PLENTY more summer headed our way.

As a local, I feel like I am finally starting to understand the magic of August in Carlsbad. This is when things get good. The beach gets a little quieter, the evenings are still long, and we can all stop fighting for parking spaces with every single person in Southern California.

So we are embracing it.

I shoved as much summer fun as humanly possible into this month’s box. I’m dreaming of quick nachos, passing around passion fruit margaritas, salty snacks on the beach, late dinners outside, and generally refusing to acknowledge that September exists.

I have a complicated relationship with coffee.

I love coffee. I also love not feeling like I’ve been shot out of a cannon at 9:17 am.

Enter MUD\WTR.

Their coffee is made with organic ingredients, mushrooms, and L-theanine and has 45mg of caffeine per serving, which is roughly half the caffeine of a standard cup of coffee. Basically, enough to get you moving without making your eyeballs vibrate.

Okay. It’s just HONEY in really nice packaging. Super SMART packaging actually.

But they make it thick. This stuff is 100% raw honey that has been slowly thickened into this incredibly smooth, creamy, almost butter-like texture. And because it comes in a tube, there is no jar, no honey-covered spoon, no sticky countertop, no tiny honey bear staring at you from the pantry. Just squeeze babe.

I love this on toast. Obviously. But also on yogurt, fruit, cheese, charcuterie (great for a beach moment!), ice cream, oatmeal, crackers...

Basically anything that could benefit from a little “ohhh, what’s that?” moment.

And if you put this on a piece of really good bread with a little flaky salt?

Game over. Or you could mix some into a passion fruit marg.....

PASSION FRUIT!

One of my favorite summer fruits because it looks completely unassuming from the outside and then you cut it open and it’s like...

WHOA.

These little guys are tart, tropical, juicy, floral, and absolutely gorgeous.

I love them spooned over yogurt, tossed into a fruit salad, mixed into a drink, or just eaten directly out of the shell like a tiny tropical goblin.

Also, margaritas. DO IT.

SIPPL Skinny Margarita Mix - $22

Okay, one more thing before you go make those passion fruit margaritas...

It’s okay to have a cocktail. Or two. I said what I said.

SIPPL is a female-founded cocktail mixer made by a certified holistic health coach who looked at the traditional, sugar-loaded margarita mix situation and said, “We can do better.”

Their Skinny Margarita Mix is made with real citrus juice and agave, no artificial sweeteners, and has just 45 calories and 4g of sugar per serving. It also has B vitamins and green tea extract for a little natural energy boost, because apparently even margaritas can be functional now.

Just add tequila (or don’t) and ice and you’ve got yourself a very respectable little bar-quality margarita at home.

OR — and I love this almost as much — add it to sparkling water for a super easy NA situation.

So make the margarita. Make the mocktail. Throw in some of those J.R. passion fruits.

Squeeze in some lime. Maybe add a little of that thick Honey Department honey if you’re feeling fancy.

These are so cute.

COZY makes refrigerated Butterbars with just eight real ingredients, including grass-fed butter, oats, and dates. The company was started by a husband and wife while Russell was going through cancer treatment, and I love the simple idea behind the brand: make something delicious where you can actually recognize everything you’re eating.

Warm Cinnamon and Salted Matcha are the two flavors and honestly, I am having a hard time deciding which one I like more.

They’re buttery, chewy and just sweet enough.

And because they’re refrigerated, they feel like a little treat that wandered into the snack section wearing nicer clothes.

WA-CHAA Kung Fu Peanuts - $3.75

Okay. These are FUN. WA-CHAA is basically a peanut snack turned all the way up. Shandong peanuts, Sichuan numbing peppercorns, toasted chili flakes, avocado oil...Salty. Spicy. Crunchy. A little tingly.

The kind of snack where you eat one and then immediately eat another because you’re trying to figure out exactly what is happening in your mouth. But thats not why I like them. I LOVE the complex flavor and legit eat these almost every shift.

I feel like these belong on a summer snack board next to some cheese and salami, but they also make a great road trip snack, im starving and dont know what to eat snack, you get it.

John’s Super Foods Sauer Power Pickle Juice Shot - $4

I am officially a pickle juice person. I have noticed a trend in this new category and I love it. These little fermented pickle juice shots are salty, tangy, and completely ridiculous in the best way. Perfect after a sweaty beach day. Perfect after a workout. Perfect when it’s approximately 800 degrees outside and you need something that tastes like it could bring you back to life.

Also, if you are a person who loves pickle juice straight from the jar, congratulations. You have found your people.

Haggo’s Tortilla Chips - $9.25

Have you been to Haggos Tacos? If the answer is no, please stop reading this and go. 100% Seed-Oil Free Restaurant Grass-Fed, Wild-Caught, Organic, Free-Range, Non-GMO, Glyphosate-Free, Vegan/Veg options and more. This place gets it and has quickly become a family favorite. It’s so good. When I found out I was able to carry their chips, I FREAKED. Fan-girled and begged to have them immediately.

Haggo makes the kind of chips that make you immediately want to put together a little taco situation. They’re salty, crispy, crunchy, and exactly what I want sitting next to a bowl of salsa on a warm August evening.

We are very, very serious about salsa around here. Stoked On Salsa is a San Diego company that started because founder Steve couldn’t find salsa that tasted like the fresh stuff from his favorite burrito shops back home. So naturally, he started making his own.

And honestly? Thank you, Steve. The salsa is fresh, bright, flavorful, and made for exactly the kind of summer eating I want to be doing right now. We love this on eggs, but really just a nice chip and salsa dinner slaps.

Make it extra special but adding a little....

Good Culture Organic Sour Cream - $7.25

Sour cream gets overlooked. And I think that’s a mistake.

Because a really good sour cream can take a meal from “yeah, this is fine” to “OH BABY.” And no, you can’t do that by subbing greek yogurt. Don’t even get me on that soapbox. Good Culture’s organic sour cream is rich, creamy, tangy, and made with simple ingredients. Obviously this is going on the nachos, or a baked potato, or chili, ohh or I would absolutely put a giant dollop next to some grilled corn with lime and chili.

Honestly, I think sour cream deserves a little more respect.

So That’s The Box!

What a lovely month it has been.

Have you been outside lately? Have you dipped your toes in the ocean? Have you taken your evening walk and looked around thinking, “Dang. I actually live here.”

Because WE DO.

And I don’t know if it ever gets old.

As a former East Coast girl turned Chicago girl turned California convert, let me tell you... this place is legit. The sunshine. The ocean air. The fact that people casually surf before work? It’s all still slightly absurd to me.

People keep asking what my favorite thing about the new shop is, and my answer is always immediate:

THE LIGHT.

These giant windows absolutely flood the store with sunshine and I swear it has changed my life. There is something so magical about unpacking produce while sunlight pours in, watching people walk by with sandy feet and beach towels, and realizing that this little grocery store gets to exist in this beautiful little corner of the world.

I feel like we’re all waking up from our June Gloom haze and officially stepping into summer.

And yes, I said stepping INTO summer. Because apparently, as a local now, I have learned that summer in North County is less of a season and more of a lifestyle that stretches gloriously into October.

So we pulled together a box filled with sunshine, easy snacks, beach treats, fun discoveries, and little things to make these long, golden days even sweeter.

Some of these products are brand new. Some are products we’re considering for the shelves. Some are simply things we’ve become completely obsessed with lately.

Morning Light Hydration — $24.99

I will make everyone around me snacks, remind my children to hydrate, carry around seventeen beverages at one time... I am typically very prepared. But then things happen, and someone takes my water bottle and it somehow becomes 10 hours without a liquid.

So naturally I become completely obsessed with anything that makes hydration feel a little more easy.

Morning Light is exactly that.

These little hydration droplets turn plain water into something I actually want to sip all day long. They’re packed with electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, natural caffeine, and all sorts of good things, but somehow don’t taste like you’re drinking a science experiment.

No weird stevia aftertaste. No fluorescent colors. No giant single-use packets taking over your purse.

Just a really lovely little ritual that makes me feel like I have my life together.

Which, some days, is enough.

Samsara Bars — $5

I have a deep hatred for protein bars.

Why do so many of them taste like sweetened drywall? I’d rather just eat a piece of cheese or an egg or something, until now.

Samsara changes that.

Created by a mom with newborn twins (which honestly immediately earns my respect because surviving newborn twins deserves a medal), these bars are inspired by comforting flavors like chai and mango lassi.

They’re warm, spiced, interesting, and actually taste like real food.

Imagine that.

A protein bar that doesn’t feel like punishment.

I especially love these for those moments when lunch accidentally becomes 3 pm and suddenly everyone is grumpy. Including me.

Absurd Snacks Granola — $7.95

I joke all the time I survive on tinned fish and granola, but sometimes I don’t want something sweet! This granola is so so good! Use it as a crunchy salad topping, a crunchy yogurt topping, a crunchy handful eaten directly out of the bag while standing in front of the pantry.

This little granola situation checks all the boxes.

Made with chickpeas and packed with protein and fiber, it somehow manages to be wholesome while still being wildly snackable.

The Rosemary Sea Salt flavor especially feels like it should be sprinkled over literally everything. It’s rich and somehow taste buttery, just trust me!

Matzo Project Chips — $2.50

I love a snack with personality.

And these have personality.

What started as an attempt to make matzo more exciting somehow became one of the crispiest, most satisfying little crackers/chips around.

They’re sturdy enough for dips, soups, cheese situations, tinned fish moments, and all of your summer snacking dreams.

Also, I deeply appreciate any company that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

And honestly?

Your cousin Barry is going to love these.

J.R. Organics Raspberries - $7

RASPBERRY SEASON!

One of the absolute joys of summer.

These are sweet, juicy, delicate little beauties and honestly never last long in our house.

I buy them with every intention of putting them on yogurt or making something lovely and then somehow eat half the basket in my car.

And this year we have both red and golden raspberries which feels especially exciting.

Summer is short.

Eat the berries.

Carson’s Cookie Packs — $22

You all know I have a cookie problem. And these absolutely did not help.

Carson spent years perfecting these recipes after struggling with food sensitivities and wanting desserts that still felt indulgent. Mission accomplished.

These cookies are rich, chewy, decadent, and somehow happen to be gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. Which honestly feels rude. How dare they be this good.

These are the kinds of cookies you hide in the back of the freezer and pretend you forgot about. For emergencies.

The emergency being that it’s Tuesday.

Gato Dates — $14.50

I love chocolate, and nut butters, and dates...So this product never really stood a chance.

These little treats are stuffed, chocolate-drizzled, naturally sweet, and somehow feel both incredibly indulgent and oddly wholesome all at once.

They’re the kind of dessert that makes you pause after the first bite.

Like...

“Oh.”

“Okay.”

“I understand.”

Perfect with coffee.

Perfect after dinner.

We also recently got to meet the creators, and fell even deeper in love with this brand. So authentic, and just trying to make a good product for the people!

Burlap & Barrel Everything Bagel Crunch — $11.25

I firmly believe everything bagel seasoning should go on...Well...Everything. Eggs. Avocado toast. Tomatoes. Salmon. Cottage cheese. Popcorn. A spoon.

This version somehow manages to be even better because it has actual texture. Big crunchy seeds, flaky salt, garlic, onion, cumin. It’s wildly savory and deeply addictive. I would happily sprinkle this over cardboard and probably enjoy myself.

Five Corners Salty Lemonade & Pickle Juice — $5

Salty, Tart, Weird - This feels like summer. In the best possible way.

These drinks are bright, refreshing, and somehow taste like something your very cool friend would hand you at the beach.

I especially love the pickle situation because apparently I have officially become the kind of person who gets excited about pickle juice. Life comes at you fast.

These are perfect for hot afternoons, post-beach hydration, or pretending you’re sitting at a fancy hotel somewhere.

Don Chilio Chili Oil — $16

This chili oil is wildly delicious. Crunchy. Spicy. Deeply savory.

The kind of condiment that immediately starts migrating onto every meal.

It has that perfect level of heat where you sweat just a little and immediately go back for another bite.

Olli Calabrese Spicy Salami — $10.25

There are very few things in life I love more than a snack plate.

A hunk of cheese. Fancy crackers. Some olives. Maybe a little handful of marcona almonds. A chilled drink. That’s dinner, baby.

And no snack plate is complete without salami.

Olli’s Calabrese is one of those products that somehow disappears alarmingly fast in our house. It’s perfectly spicy without being a “why did I do this to myself” kind of spicy. Just enough heat to keep things interesting.

It’s rich, savory, slightly smoky, and honestly makes me feel like I should be sitting somewhere in Italy wearing linen instead of standing in my kitchen in workout clothes that I have no intention of working out in.

I especially love this tucked into a sandwich with some creamy chèvre and arugula, piled onto a cracker situation, or honestly just eaten directly from the package while I’m making lunch.

No shame.

Sunny Tahini — $8.99

We are huge fans of products that make eating vegetables feel exciting.

Sunny does exactly that. These dressings and dips are fresh, bright, flavorful, and make throwing together a quick lunch feel significantly more intentional.

A grain bowl suddenly feels fancy.

Raw vegetables become exciting.

A random assortment of things in your fridge suddenly becomes dinner.

I especially love keeping things like this around because they make meal prep so fast. Slap it on a wrap, toss on some meat, and you have a meal.

That’s the box!

We hope you take it directly to the beach and snack and sip and surf and swim and JUST LIVE IT UP. Because it’s about 10pm and I’m fresh off of a super fun “snacky hour” event. I’m exhausted, but I took the 101 home. Feet aching, but heart bursting as I reflected on the support of this community, the wildly wonderful place I have made our home, and just how good this granola is. I’m not joking. I was like “wow, all my favorite people came out to support the shop, ohhh look at that oceans, wait this granola is really good, like why is it so good.”

I say it every month... but HOW is it already July?!

Summer has officially arrived, and I hope you’re soaking up every salty beach day, backyard BBQ, farmers market haul, and melty ice cream cone you can get your hands on.

Over here, we are absolutely loving life in our new home. Getting to see so many of you walk through the doors every single day still feels surreal. There are moments where I catch myself looking around the shop thinking, “Holy crap... we actually did this.”

Now... is the store finished?

LOL. No.

Not even close.

For a while, that really bothered me. I kept thinking we’d throw a big celebration once every sign was hung, every bench arrived, every last detail was checked off the list. Then I realized... I don’t think this place will ever actually be “finished.” And honestly, I kind of love that.

This shop is starting to feel more like a living thing than a project. It’ll keep growing, changing, collecting stories, finding new corners to fill, and dreaming up new ideas. (That being said... if anyone has seen our missing benches or signs, please let me know.)

Speaking of things that refuse to let up...

My sweet son—and let’s be honest, my actual boss—Coco has been asking for a ribbon cutting since we opened our tiny shop in Oceanside. Every few weeks I’d hear, “Mom... when are we having the ribbon cutting?” It’s only taken me about three and a half years to finally listen.

Since this really feels like our forever home, I figured it’s time to make it official.

Every month I sit down to write this thing and somehow every month I am shocked by the calendar. HOW are we already in June? Summer is peeking around the corner, the kids are feral, my to-do list is multiplying overnight, and somehow we’re heading into month four of the new shop.

I joke all the time that Always Hungry is my third child. Surprise! It’s a girl.

And much like an actual baby, she’s finally starting to sleep through the night. We’re settling into routines. We’re figuring each other out. She’s growing into herself and honestly? It’s pretty fun to watch.

Do we have it all figured out? Absolutely not.

We’re still waiting on permits. Still waiting on signs. Still dreaming about the kitchen build-out (plans submitted, everybody cross your fingers and toes). Sometimes things still feel a little chaotic. If you saw the bag misprints recently... well... let’s just say sleep deprivation comes in many forms.

But despite the occasional spit-up moment, she’s pretty dang cute.

And more importantly, she’s still showing up every day to bring you the best groceries we can find in North County San Diego.

This month’s box feels especially fun because it’s packed with so many special thing. A bunch of these products aren’t even on our shelves yet. We wanted our founding members to be the guinea pigs first. Lucky you! We need your opinions! We need your feedback! We need you to tell us what you’re obsessed with so we know what deserves a permanent spot in the shop.

Basically, congratulations. You’ve accidentally joined our product development team.

One of our founding members also had what I think is a genius idea: a Disco Box text group. A place where everyone can share what they’re loving, how they’re using products, recipe ideas, favorite finds, and probably enable each other’s snack habits.

Naturally, we’re obsessed with this idea.

We love a sauce. We love a vegan sauce. We love a healthier ingredient sauce. We especially love a sauce that makes me feel like I actually planned dinner when in reality I am standing in front of the fridge at 5:47 pm wondering what exactly happened to my day.

These guys became absolutely obsessed with bottled sauces and after tasting literally hundreds (seriously, they have a youtube doc about it) of them realized most are packed with seed oils, fillers, gums, and a bunch of stuff none of us are particularly excited about. So they did something about it.

The answer? Nuts.

And honestly, it’s kind of genius. Rich, creamy, flavorful sauces made from real emulsified nuts that somehow manage to taste indulgent while still being made from ingredients you actually recognize. No weird fillers. No artificial nonsense. Just a really delicious sauce that can rescue vegetables, grain bowls, proteins, wraps, sandwiches, or whatever random assortment of ingredients you’ve got hanging out in your fridge.

A very Always Hungry kind of product.

Reelie Crackers — Tomato Herb

Finding a gluten-free cracker that actually tastes like a cracker and not a packing peanut feels weirdly impossible.

Then these showed up.

Made with plantain and cassava instead of the usual rice flour situation, they have that satisfying crispy crunch that makes you immediately go back for another handful. The Tomato Herb flavor is especially lovely and basically begs for a schmear of goat cheese, a hunk of sharp cheddar, or honestly just eating straight out of the box while standing in your kitchen.

We took one bite and immediately started discussing shelf space. That’s usually how you know something is good around here.

Dan the Baking Man Cookies — Varying Flavors

Dan. Buddy. Friend.

Why would you send us cookie samples when we are already drowning in cookies?

Now look what happened.

We tasted them.

And now we’re conflicted.

Dan started this company because he was tired of “healthy” desserts tasting like punishment. As a marathon runner and CrossFitter, he wanted something made with real ingredients that still felt like a treat. Which honestly sounds reasonable because life is hard enough without disappointing cookies.

The problem is we already carry more cookies than any reasonable grocery store should.

So we’re putting this decision in your hands.

Listen. We all have nights where cooking feels ambitious.

These quick Indian meal kits come together in minutes but somehow still taste like something you actually want to eat. The ingredients are clean, the flavors are incredible, and they introduce dishes that most of us don’t usually find on grocery store shelves.

As you know, we make our own grain-free granola in-house and remain deeply obsessed with it. But we thought it might be fun to bring in something different for those of you who love a more traditional granola situation.

Ocean Ranch immediately stood out.

It’s crunchy, flavorful, beautifully balanced, and somehow manages to feel both wholesome and indulgent at the same time. Which is exactly what I want from breakfast. Or anytime really, if you know me, you know I’m 65% tinned fish and the rest is all granola, blueberries, and snap peas.

Sophie’s Organics Baby Food — Green Dream

We get asked about baby food ALL THE TIME.

And while we don’t exactly have enough room to become a baby food superstore, we wanted to find something that checked all the boxes.

Organic? Check.

Vegetables? Check.

Fruit? Check.

Something babies actually seem willing to eat? Big check.

You do not need to currently have a baby to enjoy this.

I may or may not have kept one of these in my car as an emergency traffic snack before. Also, if you put this on a plate next to something fancy and swipe it into a little swoosh with the back of a spoon, suddenly you’re a Michelin-star chef.

Bloop Laundry Soap

Did you know we have an entire cleaning and wellness section?

Like actual grown-up things.

I know. Very responsible of us.

Bloop is one of those products that surprised me because I originally fell in love with the people behind it first. They are local, lovely, and genuinely trying to make cleaning products that are better for the planet without feeling like a compromise.

And unlike some “natural” laundry soaps that leave your clothes smelling vaguely like disappointment, this one actually works.

I love a product that makes me feel prepared.

These toothpaste tabs live in my camping bag, my travel bag, my car, and honestly probably several coat pockets.

They’re tiny little toothpaste tablets that magically become toothpaste with a sip of water and a quick chew. No exploding toothpaste tubes. No TSA drama. No weird mess.

I especially love these for camping trips and long beach days because somehow brushing your teeth in a parking lot before a road trip coffee just feels like self care.

And this popcorn is just plain fun.

It’s one of those products that makes everybody stop and ask, “Wait...what is THAT?”

We love a beach beverage.

We love a patio beverage.

These sparkling non-alcoholic apéritifs are layered, botanical, slightly fancy, and make me feel like I have my life together even when I’m drinking one while folding laundry.

The flavors are complex enough that you don’t miss the booze, which is honestly the whole point.

Perfect for sunset hangs, dinner parties, book clubs, or sitting on your porch hiding from your children for ten minutes.

The Bitter Ginger Shrub — Blackberry Lemonade Mint

Okay. Shrubs are one of those things that sound intimidating until you try one.

Then suddenly you’re putting them in everything.

We love this mixed with plain sparkling water for a quick little fancy-feeling afternoon drink. Friends use it in cocktails. I’ve heard rumors of people making salad dressings with it.

Honestly, all excellent choices.

The Blackberry Lemonade Mint flavor is bright, tart, refreshing, and somehow manages to make a plain glass of seltzer feel like something you’d pay 21 dollars for at brunch.

A little splash goes a long way.

Which is good because once you start using it, you’ll find excuses.

Zee Zee Chickpeas

I am forever looking for snacks that actually hold me over.

Not snacks that pretend.

Actual snacks.

These roasted chickpeas are crunchy, salty, packed with protein and fiber, and weirdly satisfying.

I love them on their own. I love them tossed onto salads. I love them thrown into lunch boxes.

Basically if a crouton and a protein bar had a baby, this would be it.

IT’S SHISHITO SEASON.

One of my favorite signs of summer.

These are my secret weapon whenever people come over because they make me look significantly more impressive than I actually am.

Throw them on the grill with olive oil, salt, pepper, and maybe a squeeze of lime.

Done.

That’s the recipe.

Everybody thinks you’ve worked very hard.

Meanwhile you’ve spent approximately four minutes making them.

I usually serve them with sriracha mayo and a cold beverage and call it entertaining.

They also happen to be incredible on pizza, sandwiches, grain bowls, tacos, or directly off the sheet pan while standing in your kitchen.

Normal Ice Cream Bar — The Shortie

You know we love Normal.

The pints fly out of the freezer around here and for good reason.

But now they’ve gone and made my life even harder by putting all that goodness into a grab-and-go bar.

This one is strawberry milk ice cream wrapped in strawberry dip and covered in shortbread cookie crumbs. Yes, just like that bar you grew up with, but way more special.

Egglife Wraps — Everything Bagel

These are one of my favorite products in the entire store.

Full stop.

I eat at least one or two packs a week and I am not remotely embarrassed about it.

They’re made from egg whites, they’re high protein, gluten-free, and somehow stay soft and flexible without ripping apart the second you look at them wrong.

But the real magic?

They’re an incredible vehicle.

A vehicle for hummus.

A vehicle for turkey.

A vehicle for peanut butter and banana. (you can heat them!)

A vehicle for random leftovers that need a purpose.

My favorite version lately has been hummus, Greens & Gossip pickled beets, tinned fish, feta, and whatever greens are hanging out in the fridge.

Sounds slightly chaotic.

Tastes incredible.

I genuinely don’t know what I’d do without these.

Probably eat significantly fewer wraps.

Which sounds sad.

So That’s The Box!

And that’s June.

If this newsletter feels slightly chaotic, it’s because summer has arrived and my children are currently asking for snacks, looking for swimsuits, building forts, skateboarding somewhere they absolutely shouldn’t be, or generally creating the kind of memories that eventually become family stories.

And meanwhile, my little grocery store baby is over here demanding attention too.

Good thing I have a Disco Box full of snacks to keep everybody occupied.

I hope this month’s box inspires a few easy dinners, a few backyard hangs, a few beach sunsets, and maybe one moment where you stand in your kitchen eating something delicious and think, “Dang. Life is pretty good.”

There are some brands that just get the assignment. Wonderwerk is one of them. The wines are vibrant, weird in the best way, wildly drinkable, and somehow feel like a dinner party, an art opening, and a gas station candy run all at once. Founded by lifelong friends Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, the duo started making wine after falling deep into the world of fermentation, and honestly, you can feel that obsession in every bottle. They work with incredible California growers and do everything hands-on, from production to bottling, treating each wine like its own mood board. “Free Your Mind” is bright and tart with cherry, cranberry, blueberry, and this salty umami mineral thing that makes you immediately want another sip. “Love at First Sight” is a skin-contact Pinot Gris with cozy rooibos tea vibes, stone fruit, currants, and softly grippy tannins that make me feel sophisticated even when I’m drinking it barefoot in my kitchen. “Juicy Fruit” is exactly what it sounds like — red berries, violets, tropical fruit, citrus zest — basically sunshine in a bottle. This maker makes some of the shop’s favorite wines and we are so stoked to toss you a bottle!

I know, I know, ANOTHER energy drink. But there are so many good ones out there, why suffer through another fluorescent gas station beverage. It’s smooth, refreshing, packed with electrolytes, and somehow gives actual energy without making me feel like my heart is trying to leave my body. No whisking, no frothing, no tiny bamboo tools making me feel inadequate before 9am. Just add water and suddenly I’m the kind of person who has routines and inner peace. ME! Inner peace! JOVA feels like someone finally made a protein shake for people who don’t want to feel punished. Their shelf-stable smoothie kits were developed by a registered dietitian and are designed to actually keep you full for hours, but they still taste good enough that I actively crave them. The Pistachio flavor especially feels way more dessert-coded than “wellness” coded, which I appreciate. Blend with a frozen banana and milk and suddenly you’ve tricked yourself into being nourished. I questioned putting two powered things in this month’s box, but after living off these all month, I had to share. Even my kids will house one before school, and if you look at the nutrition facts, you will feel so good about that!

Paro chips are one of those snacks where you eat one and immediately have to text someone about them. Founded by Pakistani-American entrepreneur Umaimah Sharwani, the flavors pull from South Asian pantry staples and translate them into crunchy, snackable magic. The BBQ Tikka flavor especially tastes like if your favorite barbecue chip went abroad and came back hotter and more interesting, but my fav is the Jalapeno Mint! It goes great with my daily hummus meal, or is lovely on its own.

Flouwer Crackers — $12

Flouwer Co. makes the kind of crackers that make you want to suddenly become someone who “entertains.” They’re covered in edible flowers and fresh herbs and somehow make even a lazy cheese plate feel romantic and intentional. They’re beautiful without being precious, which is a hard balance to strike. When we purchased these for the shop, we did so because we could not get over their stunning beauty. Then we tasted them, and dang if they don’t have the best herb-y flavor too! Beauty and brawn! This cracker is also made my the loveliest lady. We are thrilled to support this company!

Spreadable Chèvre — $9.50

Speaking of cheese plates — the chèvre situation right now is unreal. The Honey Lavender Fromage Frais from Nettle Meadow tastes like a spring picnic in cheese form: tangy goat cheese with subtle floral notes and a whipped, spreadable texture that belongs on everything. The Blacksville version is brighter and cleaner and honestly just begs to be smeared aggressively onto crostini. Pair either one with the rosemary marcona almonds and suddenly you’re hosting (even if it’s just yourself!)

AH Kitchen Rosemary Marcona Almonds - $7.25

These are dangerous. Warm olive oil, sea salt, rosemary, that softer buttery marcona texture — they disappear at an alarming speed. Yes, we love them on a cheese board, but they are GREAT chopped on a salad or over some roasted veggies!

Fond Bone Broth — $12

Fond’s bone broth is for the people who want their “health food” to actually feel old-world and nourishing instead of clinical. It’s slow simmered, deeply savory, made with regeneratively sourced bones, and has that rich gelatinous texture that tells you it’s the real deal. I love this for a quick cozy snack!

These taste like someone turned a really good loaf of sourdough into a cracker and honestly…thank you for that.

They’re slow-fermented (over 24 hours), super crispy, a little tangy, and have that nutty flax situation going on. Simple ingredients, no weird stuff, and somehow still feel a little fancy.

Perfect with literally any dip, piled onto a cheese board, or eaten standing at the counter while you “figure out dinner.”

Party Of Popcorn — $7.50

Thai-flavored popcorn by four Thai-American sisters, inspired by their mom’s restaurants—which already tells you everything you need to know.

Big flavors (Pad Thai, Thai Chili Lime), super snackable, and aggressively crushable.

We tested this at a recent staff meeting, and it immediately became a favorite new dinner of mine.

Black Hat Breads Focaccia — $19

We love making pizza from scratch…in theory. In reality, this is what’s happening.

Throw this on the grill (or in the oven), let it get a little crispy and melty, and call it a night. It’s sourdough-based, super flavorful, and feels way more impressive than the effort required.

My youngest prefers to just pick it up and eat the whole thing, epic.

For anyone who romanticizes making sourdough but does not want to babysit a starter.

This is real sourdough culture—just without the drama. No feeding, no maintenance, no “did I kill it?” energy. Just mix it in and suddenly you’re making really good sourdough.

It’s a go to on a slow Sunday. This mix will make you feel so good about being a smart parent, and makes your house smell like a bakery. Seriously, many customers say they buy it for the smell along.

Cinnamon-y, a little sweet, super cozy—and secretly packed with good stuff (oat flour, flax, protein, veggies…but no one will be able to tell!).

AH Kitchen Beet Hummus — $6.95

We LOVE making this naturally neon dip a dee doo dah! Our beet hummus starts with slow-roasted JR Organics beets, caramelized garlic, and chickpeas. All creamed together with our favorite tahini. It’s the star of our dip show! We love to spread this on a plate and top with some grilled fish or roasted carrots, or just dip a hunk of bread and call it a day!

Even beet “haters” love this pink creation!

JR Organics Persian Cucumbers or Squash — $3.50/lb

Snappy, juicy, perfect little cucumbers. Zesty, savory, flavorful squash.

We throw them into everything—dip them, slice them, smash them into a cocktail because it’s Friday and we deserve nice things. Or grill them up and dip them in the hummus!

Made by friends who clearly care about a good drink, but don’t care for all the extra nonsense.

These are cocktail (or mocktail) mixers that actually taste balanced—bright, fresh, not overly sweet, and no weird artificial aftertaste. Just real ingredients doing their thing.

We love having these on hand for those moments when people come over and you want to offer something a little more fun than “do you want a La Croix?” but also don’t feel like playing bartender all night.

Pour, stir, maybe add a garnish if you’re feeling ambitious—and suddenly you’re hosting. Effortlessly.

A very unfussy mimosa. Cleaner ingredients, and the peach is SO tasty!

Light, simple, and feels like you should be drinking it outside, slowly, with people you like. No bells and whistles—just a good little moment in a can.

Born in Oceanside, which honestly tracks.

It has that perfect beach-town energy—crisp, gingery, refreshing, and not trying too hard. Not overly sweet, not boring…just a really good, bubbly something to sip on when you want a “drink” but not a drink.

Feels like something you crack open after a long day, ideally outside, preferably with a little ocean air.

ShiverSticks — $4.75

Scratch-made, small-batch popsicles using real-deal ingredients—fresh fruit, actual vanilla bean, coffee, lavender…you get the idea. No mystery stuff, no shortcuts.

These started as shaved ice in East Texas (with lines around the block, casually), and then turned into popsicles during the 2020 chaos so people could keep the magic going at home. Respect.

They’re bright, super flavorful, and just feel…happy. Like the kind of thing you grab on a warm day and immediately feel better about everything. The entire staff is now obsessed with these sticks. My family is obsessed. They are hands down my newest, most favorite “child” in the shop :)

Mooosh — $4.25

Looks like cotton candy, but plot twist—it’s basically fiber.

Light, melty, sweet, and somehow only 20 calories. It’s a little confusing, but in a fun way.

Cashews, dates, dark chocolate, sea salt. No refined sugar, no filler, nothing weird. Just a really solid, satisfying, slightly indulgent bar made locally by the sweetest women in the game.

Whew, that’s it. That’s April, babe. She’s here and she feels like summer, but with all the responsibilities of the school year. So you know what, we eat the snacks. Whew, it has been a wild couple of weeks! I can’t actually believe it is already time for another disco box! But I am super duper stoked on this one. Mostly because I just love Disco Box day, but also because this one has some things I have been DIEING to put on our shelves but had to wait!

“Pizza Friday” is pretty big in our house. We stretch it out to last all night long, starting at about 5:30 with snacks and a cocktail, moving on to pizza, and then finishing around 10 with dessert! It’s one of my favorite days of the week, but with opening the store, the pizza has slowly gone from every ingredient made from scratch to “what can I make in five seconds? I need to sit down.” This box is that. It’s the easiest, but dreamiest, “5-minute Pizza Friday!”

Katie’s Black Garlic Burrata Pizza - $18.50

When we went to Fancy Food and Expo West, we had one goal: to find the most legit frozen items. We tasted SO many pizzas, and this one was the winner (well, actually, there were a few, but we only had room for one!) The funniest thing is it’s called Katie’s! Their pizzas are wood fired after 48 hours of natural leavening time. They hand-stretch the dough before topping it with some pretty high-end ingredients. These pizzas are so special!

Golden Grove Organics Avocados - 2/$4

Per our convo on substack. We are obsessed with this farm. We love the people who run it and their practices. Their citrus is one thing, but their Avocados are what dreams are made of. I know, Im so dramatic. But these babies are perfection. Let them sit out for a few days to really get ripe, and you will have the most buttery, luxurious avocado. Trust. I love these sliced on the side of any dish with a little corse flaky salt and some pepper, but you do you! Makes a nice side for your pizza night!

J.R. Organics Strawberries - $8 a pint

Anyone who comes into the shop knows. WE HAVE A GIANT CRUSH ON THIS FARM. We love them so much. And we fill 95% of our produce from them, because they pay their workers a reasonable living wage, do the right thing with the earth, and their produce is just really really good. Enjoy some sliced berries with your dessert!

AH Kitchen Pistachio Budino - $5.75

Chef Katie nails it with her Budinos. These little jars of magic will be gracing our shelves every Friday in varying flavors. For spring, she wanted to treat you to something poppy and fresh! She created this triple-layer treat just for you. A layer of strawberry puree (using JR Organics strawberries) sits below a thick and rich pistachio pudding (made with organic Strauss Dairy Milk), which is then topped with a lemon whip (also Strauss) and candied pistachios. What, excuse me. Ok, give me a spoon and about 10 minutes of alone time. What a lovely way to end a meal. These jars are the perfect size for two, but we totally understand if you don’t want to share.

Audrey Tea - Mixed Flavors - $25

Audree is a local, women-run, boutique tea atelier creating small-batch blends for elevated rituals and thoughtful gifting. Each tea is hand-blended and artfully packaged in Los Angeles, with a focus on quality, balance, and timeless flavor. Designed for modern tea drinkers, Audree turns an everyday cup of tea into something worth savoring.

We are loving the packaging! Would make such a nice gift, but the tea itself is amazing! Enjoy after dinner or save it for the morning to have with….

Reuters Yogurt - Varying Flavors - $4.50

Reuts is a small-batch yogurt made in San Diego using locally sourced A2/A2 milk. It’s cultured exclusively with Lactobacillus reuteri - a probiotic strain studied for its potential role in supporting gut balance and overall wellbeing.

Made with simple ingredients and no natural flavors, gums, or fillers, Reuts has a smooth, clean, and genuinely delicious taste - crafted through a slower, more intentional fermentation process. All that is great, but here is the secret: I think yogurt is gross. I never liked it. The watery top when you open it, the texture, the taste…no thanks. RJ came to give me a sample a few weeks ago, and I went weak in the knees. He HAND FILLS the containers, so when you open it, it’s a stunning array of little peaks and waves. This yogurt is not overly sweet or fake-tasting. It’s thick and rich and tastes so freaking decadent. It’s the yogurt that changed my mind on yogurt.

Well, there you have it, another disco box for the books. I truly hope you enjoy all these little discoveries. We have so much fun finding them. Every month I think “shoot, what will we find that’s actually exciting, we can never top last month’s” and then the food fairies shine down upon us and fill your boxes with epic snacks, new fangled dips, and fresh, grown produce. Golden Grove Organics - Tini Tiny Mini Kishu Oranges - $8lb

I am going to start with the show stopper. Many of you know I love citrus. I grew up working at a farm stand that squeezed our own juices, and the smell of fresh oranges brings me back. I was recently at an Out to Brunch (FREE COMMUNITY FOOD EVENT, PLEASE COME). The theme was fennel. We met some farmers. They garnished their display with the world’s tiniest oranges. I thought for sure they were merely for vibe and couldn’t be eaten. Sonya told me they were actually edible! I immediately cracked one open, and similar to any scene in any movie where there’s a montage of crazy shit, fireworks, puppies dancing, and babies being born - I basically blacked out. I don’t know why I am this way; I just am. Deal with it.

These oranges are some of the best I have ever tasted. And the farmers who grow them are even more amazing. Lincoln and Sonya run an organic farm in Bonsall. On a gorgeous plot of land, they grow Avocados, Citrus, Passion fruit, and flowers. Their goal is to do things slowly and correctly. I also love their ingenuity, using dead avocado trees to hold up new passionfruit vines. WHAT! Mayhem! Anyway, I know this is too long. Eat the oranges. Toss them on a salad, plop them in a cocktail, or just keep them in your bag!

The Garden Of Farms - Green Cabbage - $2lb

Vogue cited cabbage as the veggie of the year. Which, to me, was pretty hilarious. I totally see that food is becoming a trending luxury item. But stay in your lane, Vogue. Being part Polish, I grew up eating so much cabbage. Cabbage soup, cabbage rolls, cabbage salad. And I still LOVE it. But now that I am an adult, I get it. That shiz is really good for you. And the crunch, heck yes.

The Garden of … Farms grows high-quality vegetables in the fertile soil of the Santa Ynez Valley, where warm California days combine with cool, moist nights created by air coming from the nearby Pacific Ocean. Shu and Debby Takikawa combine generational knowledge and farm apprenticeship experience to grow high-quality and flavorful lettuces, cabbages, carrots, and other vegetables.

Shred and squeeze some citrus dressing over top. Slice and saute with an Indian sauce. There are so many options!

Riley’s Dressings - Green Goddess, Thai Peanut, Carrot Ginger, Vegan Cesar - $9.50

Speaking of dressing, oh baby, do we have a good one for you! We have been chatting with Riley’s dressing for a bit now, but didn’t want to put them on the shelves until we moved. We then met her at the Fancy Food show, and fell even more inlove. These dressings are clean and so well-made!

Riley’s is a chef-crafted line of vegan dressings that double as sauces and marinades, made with whole ingredients, avocado oil, and no refined sugar. Founded by two sisters, Riley’s was created to handle the flavor, so home cooks can focus on the rest! When we don’t have time to make our own, we reach for this. We also love the size of these packets. Perfect for a packed lunch or picnic!

Hotpot Queen Spicy Hotpot or Sasame Dan Dan Noodles - $7.25

All this rain has us craving cozy, comfort foods. But with no time, we were thrilled when Hotpot Queen sent us their new offering!

Indulge in the authentic flavors of Sichuan with our SPICY SESAME DAN DAN NOODLES. Ready in just 5 minutes, these noodles bring a classic Sichuan street food staple directly to your kitchen. Masala Gossip - Butter Masala Simmer Sauce - $12.75

Butter Masala Simmer Sauce (also known as Makhani Sauce) is the rich, creamy base for the beloved Indian dish Butter Chicken or Paneer Makhani. Always Hungry G & G Marinated Artichokes - $5

Well, I really, really wanted to put one of our new deli dishes in this box, but we ended up having to recut open a wall, move furniture, install all these dumb pipes, and install a new handsink instead. So, although I had the best plans, we retreated and tested something else instead. The new deli will feature fancy foods for larger meals, but down the line, we dream of a whole line of sides and accoutrements to go with your cheeseboards, sandwich spreads, and more. These little ladies are great on top of a sandwich, over a salad, or go well on a cheeseboard. Toast up some bread, crack open some tinned fish, and call it a meal. They are a versatile addition to various culinary creations. Each jar is free from artificial preservatives, flavors, or dyes, ensuring a natural and wholesome flavor. The ingredients are simple and pronounceable, featuring artichoke hearts, olive oil, and a blend of spices for that garden-fresh taste.

Tantos Puffed Pasta Chips - $7

All I should have to say is these are pasta YOU SNACK ON.

Tantos takes its name from the Italian expression “Tanto Si,” which means “so much yes,” inspired by founder Chef Joe Sasto’s lifelong passion for pasta and his belief that great snacks should make you say yes to life; from a young age he knew he wanted to be a chef, encouraged by his mother as he spent time in the kitchen, and he went on to train with some of the Bay Area’s most respected chefs, contributing to Michelin-starred restaurants like Lazy Bear and Quince, where his love for pasta truly blossomed, and today he continues to make pasta from scratch almost daily while pouring his heart and soul into every bag of Tantos, a puffed pasta snack seasoned with bold Italian-inspired flavors, and has even introduced the brand on national television with an appearance on Shark Tank.

Bsides Snacks - $2.99

Wait, is that me stress eating, maybe. So much so, we found TWO snacks for this month’s box, and I just couldn’t pick. I actually met BSides snacks at Expo West LAST year and have been waiting and waiting to get them in shop.

B-SIDES are songs that don’t make it onto the final album, but superfans know that B-SIDES are often the best songs. They took the same approach with ingredients and upcycling by asking, “What can we make with those leftover oats besides oat milk?” Upcycling redirects food that otherwise would have gone to waste back into the consumer food system, and that are produced using verifiable supply chains.

All of the B-SIDES Crunch Puffs are powered by upcycled corn (from milling grits) and oats (from making oat milk). They help them hit our flavor, texture, protein, and fiber targets. We love this! I used to LOVE queso, like loved it. Then I read the ingrediants and I was shattered. (So dramatic.) Never again. Until now, somehow the folks at Drippy Dip managed to make a real cheese sauce, using…wait for it….real cheese, no seed oils, no artificial anything, and they colored it with veggies. And it actually is really, really good! YEAH!

I love it with steamed broccoli, the boys love it over a soft pretzel, but you can honestly just dump it in a bowl of pasta and call it a dreamy day.

If there were ever a collab matchmaker, they would for sure set Always Hungry up with Excited to Eat! Buckle up, this bread is outstanding.

Excited To Eat is a vegan, gluten-free baking business popping up at local farmers’ markets across San Diego. They bake everything fresh the night before each market — from their handcrafted artisan bread to sweet and savory favorites — using real ingredients and zero shortcuts. Their loaves are known for their golden crust, soft interior, and sliceable, sandwich-ready texture that never feels like a compromise. We think what this woman is doing for the GF industry is major! The number of chocolate bars we sell is alarming. So when we go to food shows, we are always looking for a high-quality bar. Typically just chocolate, no fluff, until we tried this brand. It’s like what you grew up eating, grew up! They are made with much higher quality ingredients and have just a touch of sweetness. The mother fluffer is my personal favorite, but they are all so great. It’s special enough to put on a tray after dinner with a glass of red, or to give as a gift, but we like it as a treat to ourselves. You deserve it too. Because you are a founding member, baby. You believe in community, to support all these small makers’ dreams, and you showed up when we needed it most.

So eat this candy and think of it as a massive hug from me. I don’t think I will ever really be able to put into words how it feels to see your friends and strangers step up and surround you with the support and encouragement you needed. Starting a business is hard. Building in a very old building is hard. Having you here made it worth it. I started AH by curating and writing about these Discovery Boxes, and writing about this Disco Box while sitting in my new stunning space - that is all mine- is, well, it’s…I don’t know what to say.

Everything is changing colors and our soft opening is getting closer and closer (albeit still pending).

While we waited for our fridges to arrive, delayed and frosty from the snowstorm back east, we have been busy getting the tinned fish room ready to blow your minds. We are painting everything bright shades of AH blue + sunshine yellow and have been testing recipes with our new chef (announcing soon!) to temper the heightened excitement for a hopeful end of February/ beginning of March soft open!

Memberships. We realize we’ve been talking about it a lot but it really does carry a lot of weight for us. We want soul in our food and in our space. Our new building can facilitate both, but it is old, full of character and it needs work and time and money and love. So by becoming a Member, you can be a part of making the magic and fund our growth and community. You will get cool stuff and discounts, and we will get the support we need to build out our new space.

We have made some updates to them and added a Disco Box only option for those of you who would prefer less on your calendar and more snacks in your pantry. The membership will be the ONLY way to get a Disco Box from here on out so if you love them now, just wait. They will be so stacked with goodies you won’t regret it.

Always Hungry Grocery & Goods

We said farewell to our Oak Ave store pretty soon after we said it to 2025 (caviar bumps and all), and it was bittersweet. So much community was built in that little space, with many glasses of delicious wine from Little Victory, and numerous products were tried. The limit of what a shelf can hold was tested, and the essence of Always Hungry was defined.

But my dreams outgrew that space before we even got started. I’ve always wanted to be a one-stop shop, and we needed more room to offer that. So the plan was always to start off with Little Victory by our side as we built out our new space. The time has come and we are both going to have more space for our customers.

So watch out for us at 325 Carlsbad Village Drive, coming next month. It will be a soft opening with many of your favorites and much of what we’ve been dying to share with you.
