I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer. I have been foraging, gardening, and beekeeping. My garden is full of tomatoes, basil, and medicinal herbs. The bees are buzzing, and being around them has become a form of meditation during these trying times we are living. I am excited to share that the City of Philadelphia approved the relocation of my beehives into the community garden I am a part of, which operates on city land. WOOHOO!!!

Step 1: Crafting a Strong Picture Book Manuscript

Read at least 100 picture books.

Before you can write one, you need to immerse yourself in the genre. Pay close attention to pacing, word choice, character development, themes, point of view, plot, and word count.

Reading widely will also help you see whether your manuscript idea feels fresh. Has it been done a million times before? Is it a concept you can add your own unique twist to make it stand out?

Then, write—and rewrite.

• Write the story of your heart.

• Edit with intention. Remember, 90% of writing is rewriting.

• Find critique partners or groups to give you honest feedback.

  • Authors (like me) offer professional critiques at a fee. We will read your manuscript and give you feedback to help you get it ready for publication.

Invest in your education.

Read great craft books like Writing Picture Books by Ann Whitford Paul.

Join organizations like:

• Writer’s Digest (subscribe to their newsletter and take their online classes)

• SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators)

• Highlights Foundation workshops

• The Children’s Book Academy

• The Author’s Guild

Step 2: Learn the Picture Book Basic Rules

Each genre has a target audience. As you write a picture book, you need to keep some key elements in mind. The age range of readers is 4–8 years old, and the age range of your main character is 5–9 years old.

The most important rule is to make sure your main character has agency—they should drive the story forward, not just be helped along by adults or friends.

When I work with clients, their manuscripts tend to be too long. If you are writing a fiction book, aim for a word count of 300–700 words. If you are writing a nonfiction picture book, the word count should be about 1,000 words. Additionally, picture books are typically 24 or 32 pages (sometimes 40, rarely 48+).

Step 3: Get a Literary Agent 101

If you want to publish your manuscript traditionally, you will need a literary agent, so let’s break it down.

What is a literary agent—and why do you need one?

An agent helps sell your manuscript to publishers. Most publishers do not accept manuscripts unless they come from an agent. In other words, if you send your manuscript to an editor, it will most likely get trashed.

After your agent sends your manuscript to publishers, if an editor wants to buy it, your agent will negotiate your contract. Publishing contracts are LONG—they can be 20+ pages, and your literary agent will make sure you get a good book deal. Ultimately, a literary agent will advocate for you every step of the way.

• SCBWI directories

Be sure to do your homework when it comes to finding the right agent. A bad literary agent is worse than no agent. Finding the right agent is like finding the right partner who will champion your work.

What agents are looking for:

• A polished manuscript

• A strong, customized query letter

• NOTE: For picture book authors, you need to have at least 2–3 polished manuscripts ready.

Expect rejection—but don't get discouraged.

I was rejected by about 50 agents before finding the right one. All it takes is one yes. The best advice I can give you is to keep writing while you're querying. Grieve the rejections, but don't stop creating. I cried. I was frustrated. I felt like giving up. But I am glad I did not give up on my childhood dream of being a KidLit author.

Part 4: Writing a Great Query Letter

Customize your query letter for each agent.

A strong query should include:

1. Why are you querying that particular agent? (Personalization and customization are key.)

2. A brief, engaging pitch of your book (3 sentences max)

3. A short bio highlighting your relevant experience

Get feedback.

• Share your letter with critique partners.

• Study examples (you can find a sample of the query letter that helped me land my agent here).

Continue educating yourself.

Organizations like SCBWI, Highlights Foundation, The Word: A Storytelling Sanctuary, Writer’s Digest, and We Need Diverse Books offer workshops specifically on querying.

Part 5: The Agent Call

Congratulations—you’ve been offered "the call!" This is your chance to interview them and see if it’s the right fit.

Questions to ask include:

• What drew you to my work?

• How do you give editorial feedback?

• What is your submission process like?

• What happens if a manuscript doesn’t sell?

• How do you handle contracts?

• How flexible is the agency agreement if things don’t work out?

What NOT to ask:

Avoid asking, "How much will you sell my book for?" or "How long will it take?" Publishing is unpredictable, and those answers can vary wildly.

I used to think that if you were not reading the book, it did not count. I did not believe that listening to an audiobook counted as reading. This was before the birth of my twins.

Now, as a busy working mom of a 6-year-old and 19-month-old twins… I constantly feel like I am drowning in deadlines I struggle to meet, in laundry, in dishes, in diapers (I change 20+ diapers in a day). I am exhausted.

After a long day of juggling work and motherhood, I do not have the energy to read. Sometimes I am able to crack open a book before bed, but I am so tired that I fall asleep after a few pages. It will take me an eternity to finish a book at this pace.

Which is why I LOVE audiobooks. Audiobooks have quite literally saved my reading life. The truth is that I refuse to lose myself to motherhood, and audiobooks help me hold onto being the reader I was before motherhood. I can listen to them while I:

• load and unload the dishwasher

• wash and fold what feels like endless piles of laundry

• cook dinner (and reheat it three times because… kids)

• wash my hair in the rare quiet moment I get in the shower

• clean up toys for the fifth time in a day

• go on walks with my kids

• run errands

In other words: audiobooks meet me where I am.

And here’s the thing—this isn’t just me justifying my habits. Research actually backs this up.

A large meta-analysis published in the Review of Educational Research took into account 46 studies conducted between 1955 and 2020, and found that levels of understanding do not differ significantly when the same texts are read or listened to.

Research reviews on literacy show that audiobooks can support vocabulary development, comprehension, and overall engagement with reading, especially for people who might otherwise struggle to access books.

In other words, it’s not cheating. It’s still reading. For me, audiobooks have been the difference between not reading at all and finishing multiple books in a year.

Personally, I recommend Libby and Libro.fm. WHY?

Well, Libby is FREE!!! It is an app you can download on your phone, and it is FREE with most library cards. I have a Free Library of Philadelphia card and was able to create a Libby account for FREE and therefore listen to audiobooks for FREE.

Libro.fm is my go-to when I want to BUY an audiobook and listen to it again and again without worrying about return dates. It is also an app, so you can listen anywhere you go, whenever you have time. Bonus: it financially supports independent bookstores, which I love. You can even pick which indie bookstore you want to support, which is cool.

So no, I’m not reading the same way I used to. But I am still a reader. And in this season of life, that counts. I am currently listening to the Brooklyn Brujas Series written by - if you are into sisterhood, magic, family, and witches, add these to your reading list.

In Labyrinth Lost, Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. She casts a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air. Can she save her family? For me, it is all about loving and accepting yourself entirely, as well as the importance of family love.

In Bruja Born, Lula Mortiz is a bruja with healing powers, but after her family’s battle in Los Lagos, she feels broken in a way she can’t seem to fix. Then tragedy strikes when a bus crash leaves her friends and her boyfriend, Maks, dead. Desperate to reclaim normalcy, Lula invokes a spell to bring Maks back. Lula’s love for Maks results in her accidentally raising an army of casi muertos--creatures between the living and dead--and they want their freedom...which they can only achieve if Lula dies. This book takes on grief, sisterhood, love, love-lost, sacrifice, and an intro to other magical creatures, which takes the world-building to the next level.

I am currently listening to book three, called Wayward Witch. Rose Mortiz has always been the good, quiet, and smart sister. She did not banish her family to Los Lagos like Alex or raise an army of the undead like Lula. She has brand-new powers she doesn’t understand, and her family is still trying to figure out how to function in the wake of her amnesiac father’s return home. Then, on the night of her Deathday party, Rose discovers her father’s memory loss has been a lie.

This year, I had the wonderful opportunity to partner with Read to Grow and Sparkler to record a virtual read-aloud of my picture book Plátanos Are Love. Read to Grow and Sparkler have collaborated to create a series of author read-alouds that families can enjoy together online.

These recordings are designed to make storytime more accessible and joyful for families everywhere. The videos live on Sparkler’s website and are shared widely so caregivers, educators, and children can easily press play and enjoy a story together.

Alyssa and Jenna here! I (Alyssa) typically write about publishing and marketing books - but I am also a mom and I am so excited to collaborate with to discuss how to find time for the things that we love while parenting. Jenna writes a weekly Substack on realistic self-wellness for parents, and I felt seen by her honest parenting content, which is why I reached out to her to collaborate. I hope you all enjoy this post, even though it is different from my typical content.

The Quiet Grief & the Small Joys

There are things we miss about our pre-parent lives that don’t always get talked about out loud. Your time is not your own anymore, and we should grieve that.

At the same time, Jenna and I have both noticed something else to be true: When we do find ways—small, imperfect ways—to sneak in the things we love, we show up as better parents. That’s why we collaborated on this guide to finding time (and ways) to fuel ourselves and fill our cups.

We put our heads and our experiences together to create this post for all of you.

When Jenna found ways to make space for creative pursuits—writing on Substack and painting late at night—she actually had more energy and joy for her children. It wasn’t a choice between motherhood and creativity. For Jenna, they went hand in hand.

As a children’s book author, I (Alyssa) find joy in incorporating my kids into my work. HOW? By drawing inspiration from them and by bringing them along to my author events.

Which brings us to the big question we want to explore together: How do parents reclaim joy in the middle of parenting chaos?

STEP 1: Let’s Name the Reality First

Parenting is wonderful, but it’s also exhausting and all-consuming.

The mental load alone—appointments, meals, nap schedule, and all their feelings—can crowd out the parts of us that existed before we became “Mom” or “Dad” or “Caregiver.”

It’s easy to lose ourselves in the to-do list.

It’s easy to believe that tending to everyone else’s needs means our own needs must come last.

And the truth is: we already do so much. Sometimes too much, which is exactly why naming your reality is the first step to claiming your joy.

It’s okay to say you are tired out loud. It’s okay to feel overstimulated. It’s OK to feel like being a parent sucks sometimes.

Give yourself permission to want more than survival mode. Give yourself permission to want joy—not someday, but now.

STEP 2: REMEMBER WHY Carving Out Time for Ourselves Actually Matters

Great. You are giving your permission to be happy. Remember, this isn’t about indulgence. It’s about sustainability.

Making time for the things we love supports our emotional health, increases our patience, and helps us regulate stress. Research consistently shows that parents who engage in meaningful leisure or creative activities report lower burnout and higher life satisfaction—and their kids benefit from that regulation, too.

Our children are always watching. They’re learning not just how to work, but how to live.

So we ask ourselves:

Do we really want our kids to believe that adulthood means our only hobbies are laundry and answering emails?

When we stop doing things that light us up, we don’t just lose joy—we lose our bandwidth in all areas. And that loss shows up in our parenting: shorter tempers, thinner patience, less presence.

Joy isn’t extra. It’s fuel to keep going.

STEP 3: Implement these FIVE Small but IMPACTFUL Strategies

These aren’t big, life-altering overhauls. They’re small shifts that have helped us weave joy back into our days.

1. Bring Your Kids Into What You Love

One way to keep joy alive is to stop seeing it as separate from parenting.

Alyssa: As a children’s book author, reading is part of my job—but reading with my daughter has become something sacred. We curl up together, explore new books, and talk about stories. I stay connected to the publishing world and I get quality time with my oldest, while fostering a genuine love of reading.

Jenna: When I feel the itch to paint, I’ll get out my kids’ watercolor sets to join me. It doesn’t last long, maybe 15 or 30 minutes, but it’s a beautiful moment, and we both get to do something we love. I’ve also taken my kids in strollers while I work out at the gym (always packing a fun snack) or I’ll sneak in a few pushups while I play Magnatiles. It’s always nice to have time alone for my pursuits, but sometimes I have to get creative and blend it into my day with them.

You don’t have to choose between your passion and your kids. Sometimes, they can grow side by side.

2. Choose One ‘Extra’ Thing for You

We spend so much energy exposing our kids to “cool things” - Dance classes, art activities, and other experiences.

But here’s the truth: parents need cool things too.

At one point, I (Alyssa) realized I didn’t have hobbies anymore. Writing used to be my creative outlet—but now, as a published children’s book author, it’s also my job. Something felt off, and I couldn’t quite name it until I realized I had nothing that existed just for joy.

So I picked knitting back up. Over a decade ago, I used to knit scarves for family and friends. I also knitted blanket squares that were turned into blankets for children in need through the Knit-A-Square Soweto Project in South Africa. It was creative and connected to the community—perfect for me. Life got in the way, as it does, but I’m returning to it now. I’m also taking a beekeeping class in Spring 2026, which I’m genuinely excited about.

In a similar way, Jenna has found community and activities that add depth and beauty to her life, including joining a book club that hosts themed dinners and a small mom’s group. She also chips away at personal writing projects that feed her soul’s need for creativity and dreaming.

Hobbies are not a luxury. They are a necessity.

3. Start With 15 Minutes

This is your permission slip to think small.

It doesn’t have to be an hour. It doesn’t have to be a weekend away.

Sometimes it’s 15 minutes:

• Dancing in the kitchen

• Journaling

• Sketching

• Stretching

• Knitting one row

• Writing one paragraph

You might wake up a little earlier to move your body, or choose watercolor paints instead of scrolling at night. These small rituals add up. They remind you that joy doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.

4. Get (and Ask For) Support

This part matters. Talk to your partner about how important your creative and personal pursuits are. Ask—clearly and without guilt—for protected time. Maybe it’s one to two hours on a Saturday morning to write, attend a pottery class, or simply be alone.

If you’re a single parent, support might look like:

• Trading childcare with a friend

• Asking a grandparent

• Hiring a babysitter (such as a high school neighbor or local college student)

We are not meant to do this alone, and you deserve a break that restores you—not just one that helps you catch up.

5. Allow for Real Life vs. The Ideal

Let’s be honest: sometimes “me-time” is messy.

Sometimes the plan falls apart. Sometimes the kids interrupt. Sometimes the coffee goes cold again.

There’s a big difference between Pinterest-worthy self-care and real-life wins. The real win might be finishing that coffee while it’s still hot—or writing three sentences instead of three pages.

Consistency beats perfection every time.

Alyssa here. I know I usually share publishing insights and book marketing tips, but as a Queer Afro-Latine/x Indigeous (Taino) author with Dominican and Puerto Rican roots, I have to say that Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime show was ICONIC.

Bad Bunny didn’t just perform at the Super Bowl — he shifted the cultural axis. What we witnessed wasn’t simply a halftime show. It was a declaration, a love letter, a protest, and a celebration wrapped into one unforgettable performance. For millions of Latine viewers — and honestly, anyone paying attention — it felt historic. Let’s dive deeper and examine what made his performance legendary.

1. The First Halftime Show Performed Fully in Spanish

This alone secured its place in history. The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched events in the world, and Bad Bunny chose not to dilute his identity or translate himself for comfort.

During a time when the Supreme Court deemed racial profiling legal and speaking non-English languages, especially Spanish, has been weaponized against our community by ICE and law enforcement, an all-Spanish Super Bowl performance was emancipating.

He trusted the audience to meet him where he is. That choice wasn’t exclusionary — it was empowering. It sent a message: Spanish is not a barrier; it is a bridge.

2. Centering Latin Music Without Compromise

There was no genre blending to make it “more American” — no pressure to conform to pop formulas. Reggaetón, Latin trap, and Caribbean rhythms were front and center. The performance didn’t ask for permission to exist — it claimed space. And in doing so, it had us dancing and celebrating. If you have not listened to Bad Bunny’s music yet, this is your invitation to give it a listen.

3. Honoring Legends

Including icons like Ricky Martin wasn’t just nostalgic — it was intentional. We heard references to songs by Daddy Yankee, including "Gasolina," who is Reggaeton royalty. It acknowledged the artists who paved the way and reminded viewers that Latin music’s global success didn’t happen overnight. It was built on decades of artistry, struggle, and perseverance.

4. Song Choices That Addressed Real Issues

“Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii” and other selections weren’t random hits. They were commentary. They touched on themes like colonization, displacement, and power struggles. This song is a cautionary tale reminding everyone to be wary and not to sell their homeland, so we do not suffer the fate of Hawaii. We need to stand up in solidarity against the powers that be.

He also sang “El Apagón - Aquí Vive Gente" about the lingering effects of power outages at the hands of corporate greed and governmental neglect in Puerto Rico. The halftime show became a stage for social awareness, not just entertainment.

5. Visual Storytelling That Centered Everyday People

Instead of only showcasing celebrity glamour, the performance spotlighted the real individuals who make up our communities — piragua and coco vendors, nail techs, construction workers, corner stores, boxers, and families. It said: these are the people who build culture. Not just stars — citizens.

The wedding scene was peak. The declaration of husband and wife, their first dance, their kiss… I have read that it was a real wedding. The couple invited Bad Bunny to their wedding, and instead he invited them to the Super Bowl - how cool!!! I loved how it showed a wedding because they are intergenerational celebrations rooted in family, joy, and LOVE.

6. Cultural References That Felt Authentic, Not Performative

Sugar cane fields, coco imagery, piraguas, domino tables, la casita rosada, street aesthetics, and so much more — none of it felt like a costume. He even invited real Latino business owners like María Antonia Cay, who everyone in New York City knows as Toñita, because she is the owner of a Caribbean Social Club in Brooklyn. These weren’t props; they were lived realities. For many viewers, it felt like seeing home represented on one of the biggest stages in the world.

7. A Love Letter to Puerto Rico and the Diaspora

From the rhythms to the song selection to the visuals, the performance radiated PRIDE. It reminded the diaspora that distance doesn’t diminish identity. For Puerto Ricans watching — on the island and beyond — it felt like recognition long overdue.

I believe in my heart that it is the love letter we all need right now. He encourages us all to take pride in our roots because when we love ourselves and fight erasure, we are better able to fight for a more just and equitable world. My brothers and sisters who work tirelessly for a more just world can do so because they first did a lot of internal work to love themselves first. And I am not talking about the kind of destructive love of self that makes others want to conform. I am talking about true and authentic self-love that makes us shine and makes us want others to feel it too — it’s the kind of self and community LOVE I share through my books.

8. An Invitation

I also saw it as an invitation. For those willing to be open to the culture and the people, it was an invitation to join in the celebration. The perfect examples of these are the scenes in the pink house and the wedding.

At La Casita, I peeped other influential celebrities like Cardi B, Pedro Pascal, Karol G, Young Miko, and Jessica Alba. This message was clear to me - when one of us wins, we all win and get to shine. It reminds us to uplift each other up, as we rise.

The wedding scene was a celebration and an invitation. Old and young alike danced and ate cake together.

The final scene of flags from dozens of countries being held by performers along with the message, “TOGETHER we are America,” on the football Bad Bunny held, is not only an invitation, but a reminder that what makes America great is our diversity and immigrant roots.

9. The Message Rooted in Love

At a time when global conversations are often dominated by division, Bad Bunny centered love as resistance. The statement flashing across the back screen — “THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE” — wasn’t subtle, and it wasn’t meant to be. It was clear, direct, and necessary.

10. It Redefined What a Halftime Show Can Be

Historically, halftime shows prioritize spectacle over substance. Bad Bunny proved you can have both. It was visually stunning, musically powerful, and politically conscious without sacrificing joy. He didn’t just entertain — he informed, affirmed, and inspired.

Why It Matters

Iconic moments aren’t just about scale; they’re about impact. This performance didn’t just trend for a night — it sparked conversations about language, representation, and cultural pride. For younger viewers, it expanded what they believe is possible. For older generations, it validated decades of cultural contributions. And for everyone else, it was a reminder that music can still be meaningful on the world’s biggest stages.

I read Plátanos Are Love, a picture book about a little girl and her sister in the kitchen with her abuela. It is a book that centers food as memory, culture as inheritance, and love as something we pass down in ordinary, everyday ways. We talked about the many ways we can prepare platanos and how that is one of my family traditions. We discussed foods that feel like home. We laughed. We listened. Children raised their hands eagerly to share their own favorite foods and stories.

There were no political speeches. No agendas. No “psychological warfare.”

Just a room full of children doing what children do best: learning through stories.

The next day, I learned that my visit had been described online as “grooming,” “radical activism,” and an attempt to “desensitize” children. I was accused—by people who were not in the room—of being dangerous.

That gap between what actually happened and what was imagined has stayed with me. What troubles me most isn’t the misunderstanding itself. It’s how confidently fear replaces firsthand experience.

What Children Actually Learn When We Share Stories

There’s a persistent myth that children are fragile vessels who must be protected from stories outside their own experience. In reality, children are already navigating differences—at school, in their neighborhoods, and in their families. Stories don’t confuse them. They help them make sense of the world.

When we share picture books rooted in culture, children learn:

• that families look different—and that’s normal and good

• that history lives in kitchens, language, and memory

• that empathy is built by listening

• that curiosity is a strength, not a threat

Picture books do not tell children what to think. They teach them: HOW to think, how to ask questions, how to recognize themselves, and how to see others clearly.

Exposure to stories is not indoctrination. It is education. And education—at its best—prepares children to live in a diverse, complex world with compassion and critical thinking. That’s not radical. That’s foundational.

What “Submissions of Hope” Taught Me About Community

For every comment rooted in fear, there were dozens rooted in clarity.

Parents. Educators. Community members. Strangers.

People who spoke up—not defensively, not cruelly—but thoughtfully. They reminded others that education is about teaching children how to think, not what to think. That exposure to stories builds empathy. That inclusion is not a threat—it’s beautiful and an opportunity to celebrate our differences as a strength.

These responses didn’t shout. They didn’t seek attention. They simply insisted on truth.

And in doing so, they reminded me of something essential: the loudest voices are not always the majority.

For the record, my visit did not cost the school anything. Instead, my visit was covered by a grant. Below is the feedback from one of the teachers present during the assembly, provided to the organizer who administers the grant:

Thank you so much for bringing Alyssa to Elk Ridge yesterday. When she said the first Spanish word, I looked around and noticed the faces of the Hispanic students that were sitting near me and their absolute joy brought tears to my eyes. For the first time in a long time (maybe even for the first time ever), the person giving the presentation looked and sounded like them and the importance of that was shown on their little faces.

The feedback I have gotten from the staff and students has been wonderful. One Hispanic student said he “loved it” and another said, “it was fun and funny”. The teachers loved how she engaged the students and included information about her traditions, culture, and the book writing process as well. My principal said the students did awesome and he attributes that to Alyssa’s presentation and the fact that many of our students were able to connect to her book.

Thank you for getting copies of her book for the teachers too. I know I, and many others, are looking forward to sharing this story with many classes to come.

Thank you again for everything you did to make this happen! I truly appreciate it.

“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Alyssa Reynoso-Morris is an Afro-Latine/x Dominican and Puerto Rican award-winning storyteller, author, and motivational speaker. Multicultural and bilingual, she works with students, teachers, and nonprofits to tell compelling stories that inspire readers and writers, through interactive author visits, encouraging manuscript critique services, and knowledgeable author development consultation.

On Dec. 18, Reynoso-Morris was a guest at Elk Ridge Elementary School, where she shared her Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage with the schoolchildren and read her book, Plátanos Are Love. The book is a beautiful love letter to the power of her Latinx heritage and tells the story about the ways plantains shape culture, community, and family – all told through a young girl’s experiences in the kitchen with her abuela. With every pop of the tostones, mash of the mangú, and sizzle of the maduros, a little girl learns that plátanos are her history, they are her culture, and—most importantly—they exist as symbols of love.

On Dec. 19, just one day removed from Reynoso-Morris’ visit, one writer used an Oxford Area School District online platform to excoriate the school district’s Superintendent Dr. David Woods “and the radical liberals” on the district’s school board for inviting Reynoso-Morris, in what she called a commitment “to immersing your children in through desensitization.” The writer referred to Reynoso-Morris as “a radical left activist grooming elementary children,” and called the author’s visit “psychological warfare.”

The writer was not alone. Another writer wrote, “I would NOT want my child exposed to ANY sexual preference or practice. It is NOT up to the school to educate our children on these matters. It’s the responsibility of the parents. Elementary or any other age school children DO NOT need to be taught the acceptance of trans, pan, furry, or any other sexual group. You can call me a bigot, argue with me until our heads explode and you’ll NEVER convince me that ANY of that is “normal.

“I have no problem with not discriminating for sexual preference, but don’t you DARE tell me that it’s ‘normal,’” the writer continued. “It’s not; people with these issues need mental health help.”

The comments rendered by these two individuals did not reflect the majority of the online voices in response to Reynoso-Morris’ visit to Elk Ridge, but it was the short-sided ignorance of these two submissions that continues to magnify across social media. Poignantly - catapulted by the power of the medium - the racism, bigotry, homophobia and fear of some now shines like a statue to the bottom-feeding trolls of the American society, whose keyboards have merely come to serve as the conduit to such expression.

These dispatches have become a microcosm for our nation’s growing myopic secularism, its sincere ignorance, and its conscientious stupidity. Yet, as we continue to scroll, we begin to read the responses made to these poisonous posts – submissions in the overwhelming majority that denounce the rantings and give clear evidence that the majority of our nation still tilts toward integrity and inclusion.

They are the quiet armies in the night, typing, recoiling from the ugliness, and their responses have become our nation’s submissions of hope.

One such post written in response to the negative comments about Reynoso-Morris’s recent visit to Elk Ridge Elementary School seemed to perfectly encapsulate the emotions expressed by dozens of other writers on the feed.

“Education is not ‘psychological warfare,’” the post read. “It is the process of teaching children how to think, not what to think. Exposure to different cultures and stories builds critical thinking and empathy—skills that are highly valued by universities and future employers. Characterizing educational inclusion as ‘desensitization’ overlooks the academic necessity of preparing students to function in a diverse society.”

There were moments of deep gratitude and moments where I couldn’t catch my breath. Moments where I felt powerful—and moments where I cried so hard I was scared my depression was winning.

And as I sat down to reflect, I realized something important:

The most valuable part of this year isn’t what I achieved.
It’s what I survived, what I learned, and how telling the truth about it might help someone else feel less alone.

Talking about what you did can look like bragging. Showing HOW you did it—especially when the ground fell out from under you—is how we help each other. I hope you find this and my other posts helpful.

So this is my open journal.
The fear. The faith. The wins. The grief. The lessons.
And the resources I leaned on while figuring it out in real time.

On Losing Stability — and Finding My Feet Again

In March 2025, I lost my job.

I loved that job. It was a part-time (20 hours/week), fully remote role at a nonprofit whose mission I deeply believed in. It gave me something rare and precious: financial stability with flexibility—the ability to be a present mom and a working author.

That stability disappeared when the nonprofit lost all its federal funding because of Trump-era policy decisions, and my position vanished overnight.

And the timing couldn’t have been worse. I had just had my twins. Suddenly, I was responsible for providing for three children, without the job I had built my life around. I was scared. I cried a lot.

And then—because that’s what many of us do when we don’t have the luxury of falling apart for long—I went into supermom mode.

I applied for every job I thought I was qualified for. While I waited to hear back, I doubled down on my own work and business. I was on mom duty whenever my twins were awake. And when they slept, I hustled.

Late nights. Early mornings. Emails, pitches, follow-ups, proposals.
It wasn’t glamorous. It was survival.

And somehow—it worked.

The learning

Stability is fragile when it’s tied to systems that don’t value care, families, or marginalized communities.

What is more durable?
Skills. Relationships. Reputation. Community. The ability to pivot.

I didn’t want to learn this lesson this way—but I learned it.

On Speaking & School Visits: Saying Yes to What Sustained Me

This year, I was invited to speak at 71 events—schools and conferences combined.

Seventy-one.

I don’t take that lightly. I love visiting schools. I love sitting on the rug with kids. I love watching them see themselves in my books. I love talking to educators who are doing impossible work with too few resources.

Sharing my stories with over 10,000 people this year was a gift—especially during a season when everything felt uncertain.

School visits weren’t just income.
They were affirming and reminded me why I do this work in the first place.

The learning

Sometimes the thing that sustains you financially also sustains you emotionally.

And sometimes betting on yourself doesn’t look like a bold leap—it looks like saying yes, again and again, to the work you already know how to do well.

On Books & Recognition: Holding Joy Without Needing Permission

I launched my fourth book, BOLD, BRILLIANT, AND LATINE, showcasing the impact of Latine heroes from the past and present. Inspire the next generation of changemakers with this celebratory biography anthology of 52 Latine and Hispanic heroes. From sporting legends to fashion icons, political leaders to fearless changemakers, as well as renowned writers, musicians, artists, scientists, and more, these heroes’ lives are vividly recounted by award-winning Dominican and Puerto Rican storyteller Alyssa Reynoso-Morris and brought to life by Argentinian illustrator Sol Cotti’s artwork.

This year, Gloriana Presente: A First Day of School Story received three awards:

• International Latino Book Awards – Silver Medal for Most Inspirational Picture Book (2025)

• Northern Lights Book Awards – Picture Book Family Category (2025)

• Pedro and Daniel Intersectionality Book Awards (PADIBA) – Commended Title (2025)

I was also honored by Start Lighthouse for my work as an author and activist.

These recognitions mattered. Not because they validated my worth—but because they affirmed that stories about bilingualism, migration, first days, and belonging do matter.

The learning

You can be deeply proud and still want more.
You can celebrate your wins and still grieve the awards you didn’t get.

Some awards I hoped for didn’t come my way this year. And the truth is—the winners absolutely deserved them.

Learning how to hold joy without comparison is ongoing work.

On Substack: Choosing Community Over Metrics

I launched my Substack this year, intending to reach 500 subscribers.

I surpassed that—and then some.

Today, the community has grown to 1,400+ subscribers, with 13 paid members. That might not impress Substack “gurus,” who have over 10K Subscribers, but I’m incredibly proud of what I’m building.

These are thoughtful readers — Educators. Writers. Creatives. People who respond, reflect, and stay.

The learning

Big numbers don’t equal deep impact. I’d rather nurture a smaller, engaged community than chase vanity metrics that don’t align with my values—or my energy.

On What Didn’t Happen — and Letting That Be Okay

I didn’t work out or care for my health the way I planned. Losing my job knocked the wind out of me, and survival took precedence.

I didn’t get some of the jobs I was genuinely excited about. And that disappointment stung.

But those “no’s” forced me to keep investing in my own business—and to trust myself more than external validation ever could.

Not everything that didn’t happen was a failure. Some of it was redirection.

On the World: Naming the Grief We Carry

This year, the ongoing genocides in Gaza, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sudan shattered what remaining faith I had in international governments to do what’s right.

Again and again, we are shown that profit is prioritized over people.
Power over humanity.

This grief didn’t stay separate from my work—it sat beside me while I wrote, parented, and showed up.

I don’t have neat conclusions here.
Only clarity about what I stand for.

The Verdict

I don’t have a tidy ending to close this out. But I lost stability—and built a successful business I enjoyed running. I was afraid—and kept going. I showed up for my kids, my readers, my community, and myself.

For 2026, I’m excited to return to parts of me that had to wait:

• my health

• my body

• my hobbies (knitting, gardening, and beekeeping)

I offer school visits, keynotes, and workshops. Below are some examples of talks:

• WE CAN ALL BE HEROES - Read Aloud, Q&A, Discussion, and Writing Activity: Interactive read-aloud of BOLD, BRILLIANT & LATINE, a Q&A session, as well as a discussion about what makes someone a hero and how we can all be heroes too. After this discussion, students write about how they can be heroes, and some students will be able to share what they wrote to practice their public speaking skills. This is great for grades 3-8. This is a 60-minute session.

• PICTURE BOOK CREATION WORKSHOP SERIES - Read Aloud, Q&A, followed by a Picture Book Creation Workshop Series: This programming is done over the course of three 60-minute sessions. During the first 60-minute session, I lead students in an interactive read-aloud, and then we discuss the parts and elements of picture books, followed by a Q&A session. During the second 60-minute session, students brainstorm the components of their own picture book with a handout and guidance I provide. During the third session, students finalize their own picture book creations as author-illustrators and share them with the class. This programming is ideal for grades 3-12.

• STORY IDEA BRAINSTORM - Read Aloud, Q&A, followed by a Discussion About Your Story Ideas: Interactive read-aloud, a Q&A session, I will introduce students to fun strategies authors use to find and develop story ideas for grades 1-5. This is a 60-minute session for a total of 100 students.

• From Underserved ELL to Published Author: How To Get Published: Have you ever wanted to write a book or learn more about publishing? Me too, but I attended an underserved school in the Bronx without the proper English Language Learning (ELL) resources. I did not learn to read until I was in 4th grade. I was not supposed to be an author. Join me for a presentation about the lessons I learned on my journey to becoming an author of multiple books. Attendees will leave understanding:

  • What are the various paths to publication? Pros and Cons of those paths?

  • Why you might need an agent? What is an agent’s role? How do you find an agent and get representation? What is a query letter? How to put together a good query packet?

  • What is an editor’s role? How do you get an editor’s attention? And more.

What Does a Marketing Plan Actually Include?

Think of it as your roadmap to making sure your book gets into the right hands. A strong plan usually covers:

1. Goals & Success Markers

• Are you aiming for sales, speaking gigs, school visits, media coverage—or all of the above?

• Without clear goals, you’re just throwing spaghetti at the wall. Goals give you direction and focus.

2. Audience & Outreach

• Who exactly is your book for—parents, teachers, librarians, kids, adults, entrepreneurs, content creators, wellness warriors, and so on?

• Different audiences need different messages.

3. Core Messaging & Branding

• What makes your book unique? (Representation? A curriculum tie-in? Pure joy and fun? Solving a specific problem your audience needs help with?)

• This is where your talking points, tagline, and consistent voice come in.

4. Timeline (Pre-Launch, Launch, Post-Launch)

• Pre-launch: Buzz building, ARC reviews, cover reveals.

• Launch: Events, press hits, social media blitz.

• Post-launch: Sustaining momentum with school visits, seasonal tie-ins, and awards.

5. Measurement & Tracking

• Because if you don’t measure what’s working, you can’t repeat it!

Most authors focus on writing their book (of course), but don’t realize how much strategy is needed after the manuscript is finished. A marketing plan gives you confidence, clarity, and a clear path forward.
