A Creative Breath to Begin Your Month

September Opening Note

And Now, Back to You

Many of you know that Tania and I were both teachers for a very long time. Between the two of us, we taught just about every age group, from infants in daycare all the way through adult college students. We taught all the ages in between from burgeoning pre-teen fifth graders to poised on the precipice twelfth graders. We taught grammar and Shakespeare. We taught people how to read, how to write, and how to think critically. We threw class parties, played games, met with countless parents, planned lessons, rearranged classrooms, and started over again every fall with unfailing energy and purpose.

So for us, somewhere deep in our body memory, September will always feel like the new year. And with that comes an almost infinite sense of possibility: excitement, anxiety, anticipation, reinvention. As teachers, every September we got to begin again. There were new students and new ideas, new books to read, new adventures we could take together.

But we have both been out of the classroom for a long time now, and we’ve started thinking differently about what September might mean.

Less a reinvention of self and more a return to self.

Don’t get us wrong, we will always be up for a new journal, a new pen, a fresh planner, or a trip down the school-supply aisle. There is something wonderful about a blank page and the invitation to revisit our goals. That kind of reflection is essential to living a creative and thoughtful life. But this September, we want to encourage you to go smaller.

Resist the feeling that you need to change everything about yourself in order to begin something new. You don’t need to sign up for every class, find a new expert, master a new system, or learn the right way to do the thing you’ve been wanting to do.

What if, instead, you used the blank page of September to investigate what you already know to be true? What if you began with the idea that you already have what you need?

Maybe what you need isn’t reinvention at all. Maybe it’s simply a refresh.

Refresh your desk. Move your chair. Clear a corner. Pick up an old notebook. Return to the book you put down. Take the guitar out of its case. Walk a different route. Put on music you haven’t listened to in years.

We can’t help that Pavlovian response to September’s newness—the crisp notebooks and sharpened pencils still call to us, but we don’t have to let all that new become another distraction from ourselves.

Because you can be your own teacher, and you can be your own student. We contain, as Walt Whitman wrote, multitudes. There are so many selves already inside us to rediscover, listen to, and learn from.

So yes, perhaps life does start over again in the fall as Fitzgerald writes in The Great Gatsby. But instead of searching outside yourself for the person you’re supposed to become, what would happen if you let a little fresh September air into the life you already have?

Set a new curriculum for yourself. Choose the books you want to read. Find new music—or return to old music that once made you feel something. Move your body in a way that feels good. Change your morning routine. Make something without worrying whether you’re doing it correctly. Follow the idea that keeps tugging at you. Most of all, listen. What is your own wise self trying to tell you? Maybe September doesn’t have to be about becoming someone new.

Maybe it can be about coming home to who you already are.

This Month’s Gentle Prompt

Desk Yoga: Seated Cat/Cow, Seated Crescent Moon, and Seated Twist

When you find yourself at your desk to begin filling in the school year calendar, to organize your appointments/to-dos, or to write in your journal, take a few minutes for desk yoga. A little goes a long way.

Seated Cat-Cow

Begin with your feet flat on the floor and sit up nice and tall. Rest your hands on your knees. Inhale slowly and arch your back. Exhale slowly and round your spine, tucking your chin to your chest. Move through three gentle rounds.

Seated Crescent Moon:

Take a deep breath in and lift your arms up and overhead with your palms pressing together. Exhale, and gently lean your upper body to one side. Inhale back to center, exhale up and over to the other side. Move through three slow rounds.

Seated Twist:

Place one hand on the side or back of your chair and the other hand on your opposite knee. Inhale to sit up tall, exhale into a gentle twist. Slowly take it to the other side. Repeat for three rounds.

Notice how just a few moments of movement and breath brings you back home to your calm and steady self.

This Month We’re Loving

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

It may be a while before you can watch The Odyssey at home on your favorite streaming service, but there is something powerful about going to the movie theater that I had almost forgotten: being in community with other people, experiencing a story together on a giant screen.

There was something especially moving for me about watching a visual translation of a story I spent so many years teaching. I was telling my sons that I taught The Odyssey to ninth graders nearly every year that I taught ninth grade, and they were fascinated by that. So many students now can move through high school without reading an entire work like The Odyssey—and some may graduate without ever encountering it at all. And yet this story keeps getting encountered, translated, and remade.

There are the many literary translations, from Fagles to Emily Wilson, and now Christopher Nolan has created his own kind of translation, using the medium he knows best: film.

That was what stayed with me most. The experience of returning to a story I have met and re-met, as a student, as a teacher, and now as an adult in my fifties, and discovering that I don’t come to it in quite the same way anymore. The story hasn’t changed, exactly, but I have. The world has. The moment has. And so the story meets me differently.

Maybe that’s one of the great pleasures of art. We don’t simply experience it once and understand it. We return. We reread. We watch someone else reinterpret it. We bring another decade of our lives to it and discover something we couldn’t have seen before.

So yes, I highly recommend going to the movies. I highly recommend seeing this film. I highly recommend reading books in translation and returning to stories you think you already know. Mostly, I recommend staying in conversation with art long enough to notice how time changes what you see.

Our Let Go & Beginners

We are continuing to highlight some members of our community and how they show up for themselves creatively and in return give us lovely moments of inspiration.

This month, we are featuring our Let Go and Beginner, Kelley, and her sweet watercolor painting.

By taking the time to open her watercolor book, Kelley reminds us that creativity doesn’t have to be time-consuming, elaborate, or complicated. It simply asks us to slow down and notice the everyday moments and small pockets of beauty that can emerge with a little water, a brush, and some paint.

Her painting inspires us to pause the busyness, reconnect with awe and wonder, and remember that a little can go a long way when it comes to coming home to our creative selves.

Closing Notes

During September, set an intention to come back to you. Remember this doesn’t mean a reinvention, but rather a refresh. Let this month be a return to you and a coming home to who you already are.

A Creative Breath to Begin Your Month

August Opening Note

Mark your growth.

When you were young, your parents used to mark your height on a door frame with a pencil. Then, when they were ready to move and put their house on the market, they struggled to paint over that back closet because those marks of growth were not simply whether you became 4 ft 8 and then 5 ft over the summer; they were memories, and marks of memories, closely linked to their child, their greatest gift. We mark our holidays with calendars, rituals, special meals and Christmas card piles. We mark lots of things—we keep lists and checklists, we set timers. We mark growth in so many different ways, every school year, every new grade. But as adults, how do we mark our growth? How do we see how we’ve been changing?

In the deepest days of summer, we’re ready to harvest our zucchinis and our tomatoes. They seem to grow overnight. What was once a tiny, green, plump little berry can somehow overnight become large and red, ready to eat, and we miss the slow growth in between if we’re not paying attention. Sometimes, if we’re not paying attention to the speed of growth, the tomato can become overripe and moldy, or disappear entirely because there are rabbits in the garden that get through the rabbit fencing, or deer in the garden that decide parsley is a terrific snack.

Summer is a perfect time to mark the growth of all of the goals you set earlier in the winter—in your January resets, reading resolutions, new plans, and new projects. We still have lots of time left in this year of 2026, so take a look at your growth since January. What have you been paying attention to, and what have you been ignoring? What have you been able to accomplish, even in the smallest measurements? Can you take those small bursts and make them bigger? Can you make those ideas come to fullness?

Can you also mark the growth of things that came fast and furious, in real abundance that you didn’t expect? And can you let go of the things that you thought would grow, but maybe the vines weren’t strong enough yet or the seeds weren’t planted in the right soil? Can you look at yourself as something worth growing? While we finish up the summer, we urge you to keep growing and to pay attention to your growth. Take some time to journal about what’s been going well and what you hope to continue. What are the harvests you hope to reap later in the fall? What is the nourishing fruit that you can bring to your own table?

Celebrate your own growth by leaving a mark.

This Month’s Gentle Prompt

Two-Legged Forward Fold

Take a moment to come into Two-Legged Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana). Sit on the floor or on a folded blanket and extend your legs out in front of you. Take a slow, deep breath and reach your arms toward the sky. As you exhale, gently fold forward, allowing your hands to rest on your thighs, shins, ankles, or feet. Settle into a sweet sense of surrender.

Take a few slow, deep breaths with your eyes softly closed or your gaze relaxed. Notice if you can release any urge to hold, strive, or force. If it feels supportive, keep a gentle bend in your knees, place a bolster beneath them, or loop a strap around your feet. These are all wonderful ways to make the pose more comfortable and accessible.

As you breathe, enjoy the gentle stretch through your low back and hamstrings. Forward folds invite us to slow down, soften, and turn inward. As you settle into the pose, notice how it feels today without judging where you “should” be. Growth is often found in these moments of awareness recognizing how far you’ve come and honoring your body exactly as it is.

🌼July’s Opening Note

“I’m B-O-R-E-D!”

Some of you may be hearing those two words right now in the midst of a summer break at home. Some of you may have visceral childhood memories of long summer afternoons with no plans, no beach, no backyard pool, and working parents. You read every book in the house. It was hours until dinner, and that feeling of boredom took over. You would have done anything to have plans, to have a car, or to have that backyard pool.

What did you do instead?

You got on your bike. You drew on your shoes. You walked the neighborhood. You read your favorite book one more time. You watched television. You made friendship bracelets. You watched condensation droplets race down the windows on rainy days. You made up songs. You drew. You listened to the radio. You made mixtapes. You did chores. You lay in the sun without sunblock. You wrote letters to friends.

You messed around.

But the beautiful mess only happens after you sit with your boredom for a little while, after you allow your mind to wander. Boredom is a gift. It is yet another doorway to creativity, but man, is it hard to arrive there these days.

Technology has co-opted our boredom. Boredom feels so uncomfortable now, almost foreign to us, like a virus. We will do anything not to feel nothing, not to feel honestly, and without distraction. Yet we are all craving authenticity in a deep and powerful way. We want real experiences, and yet we cannot put our phones down, to simply be with others while standing in line, to be with ourselves in the bathroom, to be with a book before bed, to be with our own emotions, to be bored.

Yet, we need to be bored to know who we truly are—to know what we would choose if we had exhausted all other options, if we were ready to put our work down for the day, if we needed to disconnect from our loved ones for a while, and simply be with summer.

We want you to be like Ratty in Kenneth Grahame’s wonderful 1908 book The Wind in the Willows. When Ratty introduces Mole to the beauty of river life, he says, “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” No destination, no productive side-hustle, no plans. Just you and the sun, the river, the caretaking, the movement, the friendship, and the whimsy.

So in this short, magical season, we are giving you permission to mess around in your boat and let us know what begins.

✨This Month’s Gentle Prompt

Sukhasana (Easy Pose): Rediscover the gift of boredom

In a world filled with constant notifications, entertainment, and endless to-do lists, moments of “nothing to do” can feel uncomfortable. Yet boredom creates space for creativity, reflection, and rest.

Take a comfortable seat in Sukhasana (Easy Pose). Let your hands rest gently on your knees or in your lap. Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Instead of searching for something to think about or accomplish, simply notice your breath.

As thoughts arise, allow them to come and go without following them. If you begin to feel restless, see if you can meet that feeling with curiosity rather than judgment.

Ask yourself: What might I discover if I don’t rush to fill this moment?

Stay for 3–5 minutes, allowing yourself the rare opportunity to simply be. Sometimes the most meaningful insights arrive in the quiet spaces we usually try to avoid.

As a kid, I was entranced by the Greek gods because my own theology was so tame by comparison. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph didn’t wage epic battles, carve mountain ranges, or wipe civilizations off the map. But the Greeks—wow. Swaggering, horny, greedy, and vengeful. Also passionate, brilliant, merciful, and creative. Their myths were a window into emotions I never imagined in my stable, well-oiled upbringing.

Like the ancient Greeks who used myths to explain phenomena like the sun’s path across the sky, I use them to explain the perplexing invisible forces surrounding me: collectively, we know them as Tech.

I need a way to stop my new laptop from seizing up like a stroke patient every few minutes. For lo, I have wandered through the valley of shadow and stumbled into that cube of blinding white light, the Apple store at the Tacoma mall. And the ministers and vestal virgins spake unto me, thy battery is toast and doth swell the casing of thy 10-year-old laptop. Pay up, sister.

A series of short, personal essays that will remind you that even a young tomato plant carried onto a plane has the ability to bring people together, inspire nurturing responses in us, and humor. There are so many poignant and powerful pieces in this first book that I am sure you will want to read the second one. Opening the book to any page, is a surefire way to jumpstart your creativity no matter your medium. Here is a video of him reading the tomato story, we shared it in our summer workshop in June.

☀️June’s Opening Note

The light is here and the days are longer; we can feel it on our skin and in our bones. It feels like summer is a time to play. We’ve spent a long, long time indoors, and for many of us, the screen has become just an extension of that indoor life—but the outdoors is calling.

A walk in nature has long been a trigger for creative possibility. In Mason Currey’s book Daily Rituals, he explores the routines of artists throughout history, many of whom cite a daily walk outside—no matter the weather—as the impetus for curing writer’s block, finding inspiration, or simply finding movement.

He writes about Charles Dickens, “Promptly at 2:00, Dickens left his desk for a vigorous three-hour walk through the countryside or the streets of London, continuing to think of his story and, as he described it, ‘searching for some pictures I wanted to build upon.’ His brother-in-law remembered, ‘he looked the personification of energy which seemed to ooze from every pore as from some hidden reservoir.’”

While Tanya and I use yoga as a doorway for creativity, exploration, and self-compassion, we encourage you to use a hike or a walk for those same reasons. Heck, we know there are tons of places where you can do yoga outside; I’ve even done yoga on a paddleboard! The important part is to introduce novelty into your day.

If you’re someone who walks daily to track your steps, that’s wonderful—but why not try walking somewhere you’ve never been? Try to get “lost” in your own neighborhood. Try to make the simple act of walking a playful one. Listen to music if you must, but we also recommend just being. Use your walk as a meditation to be with yourself so that when you return to your desk, your studio, or your home, you can let go of what came before. Step back inside with what comes after: the new energy, the summer energy, and the sun’s energy.

🦁 Tap Into Play: Try Lion’s Breath

Share

Seeking a vibrant way to release tension and invite a spirit of play? We recommend trying Lion’s Breath. It may feel a bit silly at first, but it offers an immediate sense of relief and serves as a gentle reminder not to take ourselves too seriously.

How to practice:

• Sit: Find a tall seat with your hands resting on your knees, fingers spread wide like claws.

• Inhale: Draw in a deep, quiet breath through your nose.

• Roar: Open your mouth wide, stretching your tongue toward your chin, and exhale with a forceful and audible “HA!” sound.

• Repeat: Move through this cycle 3 times, then allow your face to soften into a smile.

This Documentary: Billy Joel: And So It Goes

Billy Joel is the iconic American songwriter and in this documentary he makes a showcase of beginning again over and over. As an artist, as a partner, as a friend, as a human being in the world, Billy Joel reminds us all to stay true to ourselves and where we come from; and in our flaws and our detours, there is still art to be made. As a Gen X-er, Joel’s music was often the background to proms, to nights at the beach, to the amusement parks and carnivals we frequented (dare I say, roller rinks?). Sometimes we made fun of it, sometimes we danced to it, and sometimes we cried to it, but we knew all the words and sang them with abandon.

🪻May’s Opening Note

May has arrived with all of its springtime possibility and its gentle sun on our shoulders. How do you want to see yourself this month? With new light? New offerings? New possibilities? How do you want to move forward—creatively, collaboratively, more fully yourself?

Can you look at yourself with gentle eyes? The same loving gaze you turn toward all of your favorite things: an old dog, a favorite book, the beach. What would happen if you looked at yourself that way?

Perhaps your intention is to sit in stillness. To try something new. To give yourself ten minutes of rest. To play in the dirt. Whatever it is, can you hold that intention with the quiet belief that it is not too late, that there is time, that what you long for matters?

Can you trust that you are trying to come into alignment—with your head, your heart, and your gut? That the very questions drawing you here are also drawing you home to your own body, your own life?

And can you set the clear intention to see yourself with new eyes?

This is not easy. We are often asked to “set an intention” in the first few minutes of a yoga class, while breathing quietly in child’s pose. But the questions that arise from even the smallest intention can feel like the work of a lifetime. They ask us to be brave. To notice what is standing in the way of self-compassion. To ask whether we can loosen our grip on those old stories, those old judgments, those old fears.

Maybe this spring, the intention is simply this: to meet yourself with fierceness and tenderness. To validate your own feelings, your own worth. To commit, again and again, to looking at yourself with loving eyes.

✨This Month’s Gentle Prompt

Standing Side Bends: Open yourself to new possibilities

From mountain pose, stand tall and grounded. As you inhale, sweep both arms up overhead, reaching toward the sky. As you exhale, lower one arm down by your side while the other arcs gently over, creating space through the side body.

Inhale to return both arms upward, lengthening through the spine. Exhale and switch sides, releasing the opposite arm down as the other reaches up and over.

Continue moving slowly with your breath for a few more rounds, finding a steady, natural rhythm. With each stretch, feel the side body expand and soften. Imagine opening a door within yourself to make space to welcome in new possibilities.

This Book: The Right to Write by Julia Cameron

Yes, another book from The Artist’s Way guru. What I like about this one is the short chapters that end with little assignments that are great for guided journaling, shaking the rust off, letting go, and, of course, beginning. The chapter that centers on the body and the writer is particularly poignant as she asks you to think about the way we use words and phrases like “body of work” and “foot of the poem”, and also encourages physical movement as a means of accessing your creativity. Walking is a tool to unlock moments in time and meditation that many authors have used throughout history. Cameron encourages the daily walk much like Tania and I encourage yoga as the doorway into your creative space and observing body.

A creative breath at the start of your month.

💐April’s Opening Note

At the time of writing this, we’ve just passed the spring equinox—the moment when light and darkness are perfectly balanced. And by the time you’re reading this, we’re already moving toward the light.

How I wish I could hold onto those things in my own life: balance and light. With the constant churn of world news, the pull of technology, and my own busy mind, both feel elusive. Sometimes I create a set of “rules” to keep myself on track—reducing screen time, greyscaling my phone, spending more time in nature. And for a while, they work. But then a few days or weeks pass, and I find myself out of balance again—drifting toward the dark, or simply ignoring the light.

Sometimes this shift happens within a single day. I might begin with an hour of nourishing yoga or a long walk, telling myself the word of the day is gentleness or steadiness. Then an email arrives from my son’s school—he’s in trouble, or late again. Or I realize I forgot to mail a check, reserve a seat, or reach out to a friend. And just like that, the balance tips.

But it is in the seeking of balance that life actually happens.

Like waves, we are never complete at the crest nor at rest in the trough—we are all of it, all the time. Yes, we can find moments of balance and think, how do I hold onto this so tightly it never leaves me? And therein lies the rub: it will always leave. Just as spring turns to summer, summer to fall, and fall to winter, the cycle continues.

Be at peace with imbalance.

It is in those moments that true growth happens.

✨This Month’s Gentle Prompt

Tree pose (Vrksasana) is a wonderful way to check in with our ever changing balance.

Begin standing in mountain pose and bring your hands to your heart. Fix your gaze upon a drishti (a focal point) in front of you and bring stability and awareness to your right leg. Then, open your left hip and rest your left heel against your right ankle, your calf or your inner thigh. Practice slow deep breathing as you lift your arms up to the sky. If you fall out, try again. Release slowly and try the other side. How does it feel on this side?

Perhaps try this for a week while using kind thoughts and welcoming any wobbling. ;)

Ruth Asawa was an American Modernist sculptor who spent years in a Japanese incarceration camp during WWII. Her work has appeared in museums around the world, and if they come to one near you, we think it will inspire you in incredible ways. She believed in collaboration, creation, and self-reliance. She was the mother of six who worked from home, a sculptor who was firm in her desire to maintain control of her art even when the design world wanted her to hand over her autonomy for money.

A creative breath at the start of your month.

🍀March’s Opening Note

Today, I watched my dog try to eat the wind. It came rushing toward her, and she seemed to know that if she could only catch it, it would taste perfect—maybe as good as those tiny cups of cream at Starbucks. She’s even learned how to stick her paw out the window of the car to feel like she’s running on air.

The winds come fast, especially in March. It is a season of transition between winter and spring, so be careful to pace yourself. Do not mistake running on air for running on solid ground. All your ideas will soon come flooding in, fast and furious, making you want to do all the things: see all the people, buy all the tickets, and register for all the classes. You might even feel the urge to show your work before it’s ready.

We’ve all been caught outside without a coat because we thought the sun would warm us all day, only for the rain to come hard, fast, and sideways. March is a time of transition where “both/and” can be experienced in real time. We can feel the duality in the air, in our energy, in our projects, and in our friendships. We can feel the pulsing newness of the coming season waiting just below the surface.

Instead of chomping on empty air like my dog, maybe we can learn to be patient. We can wait one minute more. Even when it feels like we’ve been waiting all winter for warmth, we can hold on for one more second. Our patience will pay off when the timing is right. The timing won’t be perfect, but it will be better than brittle wind, empty air, and a false sense of foundation. Can you take the time to listen closely for the voice inside you that says, “Now, my friend. Now.”

✨This Month’s Gentle Prompt

Yin yoga, with its longer held poses, offers a beautiful way to transition from winter into spring. When we surrender into the pose (even when we might want to leave it) and take slow deep breaths, we gently release the deeper connective tissues and create space within the body.

Caterpillar Pose (Seated Forward Fold)

Sit on a cushion if that feels supportive, with your legs extended out in front of you. You may bend your knees to ease tight hamstrings or place a bolster underneath them for additional support.

Take a slow, deep breath in. As you exhale, gently fold forward over your legs, allowing your spine to naturally round. Move only as far as feels comfortable. There is no need to force or strive.

Once you arrive, settle in and commit to stillness. Breathe slowly and deeply, letting each exhale soften you further into the shape. Hold for about two minutes, relaxing your muscles and bringing your awareness to the sensations of the stretch. Come out of the pose slowly and notice how you feel.

♥️February’s Opening Note

Hold for the Valentine’s Day Grinch, please.

When Valentine’s Day arrives in the marketplace, it can feel like a bunch of superficial commercial consumer garbage waiting to be tossed into the landfill as soon as the shelves are emptied of all things Christmas. Walgreens, Target and even the grocery stores overflow with Hallmark cards, candy, small toys, out of season red roses, and now I have even seen Valentine’s Day baskets waiting to be filled with more plastic things we don’t need. What we’re in dire need of isn’t Valentine’s Day—it’s the sentiment behind it. Is gift-giving the only way we can show love to others? Is a little sweet treat or fancy coffee the only way we know how to show love to ourselves? We need LOVE.

Time, space and intention are at the core of our creativity workshops. We speak about them often: claiming time for yourself, claiming a space to make art, claiming an intention that will work for your season of life. These three essential elements are also at the center of love. Did you clear space on your calendar to spend time with those you love with the clear intention of their presence being the only requirement? Now, the bigger question: Did you do the same for yourself?

Self-Love has turned into a joke in a lot of ways in our society. It flies too closely to narcissism, sexuality, and ego. Taking care of ourselves in this selfie age feels akin to selfishness, especially as we are being called to active service for our neighbors. Research has shown that altruistic behavior increases the helper’s happiness and promotes positive emotions. This effect has been demonstrated in a variety of altruistic behaviors, including volunteering, donating blood, giving to charity, spending money on others, and making small gestures, such as offering coffee, being kind, or making someone smile. We suggest both can be done in earnest. Loving yourself in small ways and loving others in the same way leads to the ripples of change we need so much right now. This February, let’s leave the candy hearts at the checkout counter and fill our hearts and someone else’s with genuine care and concern.

Open Your Heart with Baby Cobra

Gentle heart-opening yoga poses, linked to the Anahata (Heart) Chakra, invite softness into the chest, shoulders, and upper back. These subtle shapes help release stored tension and encourage feelings of compassion, love, and ease. Baby Cobra (Bhujangasana) is a tender way to begin. Lying on the belly, inhale as you bring your hands under your shoulders and then slowly lift the head, neck and chest off the mat. Draw your shoulders back as the heart gently opens. Exhale and softly release back down to the mat. Repeat two more times moving slowly with the breath.

A creative breath at the start of your month.

❄️January’s Opening Note

Here we are, in a new year again, and somehow many of us are still wondering why we haven’t begun yet. But the truth is this: we are always beginning, always renewing, always becoming.

At Let Go & Begin, Tania and I are holding this year with a different intention. We believe this is the Year of Slow, a year of connection, a year of discovering, and rediscovering, your authentic self. We believe that kind of discovery doesn’t happen through force or fixing. It happens through a deeper relationship with the body, through trying something new without needing to be good at it, through slowing down, through putting the phone away and picking up a sketchbook or a journal.

We return often to a line from C.S. Lewis: “Courage, dear heart.” To be courageous is not always to be loud or certain. Sometimes courage looks like vulnerability and tenderness. In allowing yourself to be dear, you allow others to show themselves without judgement. This year, we hope you’ll join us in the community we’re creating, one rooted in small, meaningful moments:

Listening to the radio in the kitchen.

Putting a record on the turntable.

Writing a letter to a friend.

These are not distractions from a creative life, they are the creative life.

A soft life.

A slow life.

We are so glad you’re here.

✨This Month’s Gentle Prompt

Slow Down With Cyclic Sighing: A Breath Practice

1. Inhale slowly through your nose until your lungs feel mostly full.

2. Take a second short inhale at the top of the first one.

3. Exhale slowly through your mouth, letting the air out longer than the inhale.

Continue this gently for a minute or two focusing on long, relaxed exhales. Eyes opened or closed. Begin to notice your body settling and any tension melting. This practice is your permission to slow down.

💭 Opening Note

The holidays are upon us, and for many of us this season arrives on top of our everyday responsibilities. Alongside caring for ourselves and nurturing our creativity, we’re also caring for others in ways that can feel overwhelming. Meal planning, gift-giving, gatherings, travel—each of these can be wonderful and joyful once the to-do list is complete. And yet, the reality is that even the most joyful events often carry a sense of obligation. Sometimes that obligation can breed resentment, loneliness, or simple overwhelm.

So this December, we ask you to give yourself a gift.

What would you offer your own beautiful hands and heart?
Would you gift yourself time—a walk in nature, a few minutes to draw, to sing, to sit alone with your breath?
Would you gift your creative self a refreshed space, a new desk, a special outing or quiet adventure that’s just for you?
Would you give yourself the gift of intention—meeting this season with mindful awareness, with a soft and open beginning, the way a child meets the gifts under the tree on Christmas morning?

Can you let yourself be that child for even a moment this month—opening a gift so lovingly given by your truest friend: you.

We encourage you to put yourself on your own holiday list. And remember, it can live in harmony with all you do for others. If you love Christmas lights, make seeing them a priority. If you love to bake, make time to bake. If the holidays aren’t your season at all—if you wish they’d quietly pass—how can you support your emotional needs with gentleness and honesty? That, too, is a true gift.

Above all else, our wish for you is the wish you hold deepest for yourself.

“Presence is my Gift To Myself”

A gentle mantra to repeat quietly to yourself is Presence is my gift to myself. Before you take on a daily task, take a moment to pause wherever you are. Soften your shoulders, unclench your jaw, and let your breath settle into a natural rhythm. With your next inhale, feel yourself arrive more fully in this moment. As you exhale, allow a little space to open around whatever you’re carrying. Repeat quietly to yourself: Presence is my gift to myself. Let this mantra remind you that you don’t need to do anything extra to be worthy of your own attention. Simply being here is enough.

A Let Go & Begin Letter

A creative breath at the start of your month.

💭 Opening Note

As we head into the season of Thanksgiving—a time that reminds us to gather, to feel gratitude, and to embrace all the familiar rituals of the season—let’s think about those you want at your table? Who would you like to share a meal with? Bake a pie for? Can you create room for one more at your table? Can you place yourself at a table that celebrates all the beauty in life—one that honors every voice, every art form, every step forward? Can you sit at a table where you are enough, where simply showing up as you are is enough?

How do you make room at your own table? Can you invite a friend to witness what you’re working toward? Show them your artwork, sing them a song, write them a letter. Do something that makes connection real and tangible—something that starts with your hands. It’s essential that we ask ourselves: how can I be generous with the gifts inside me, and how can I be a generous listener to those who need it, too?

As we head into November, hold these thoughts close. Have compassion for yourself and for others as you begin to notice your patterns shifting—as you move toward weaving your creative life and your everyday life together. And as you do, make the invitation to others part of your daily practice. And can you bring more people to our table—the one we’re creating together at Let Go and Begin?

Table Top Pose- Show Up As You Are

Feeling tired, achy, energized, overwhelmed? This pose invites you to show up just as you are.

Coming onto hands and knees with wrists under shoulders and knees under hips. Inhale, drop your belly and open your chest. Exhale, round your spine tucking chin to chest. Move with your breath at your own pace. Notice what’s here for you in this moment and invite space between each and every vertebra so that your energy can move freely.

A Let Go & Begin Letter

A creative breath at the start of your month.

💭 Opening Note

What is two hours? It’s the length of a movie, a hike, a kid’s soccer game or a school play. It’s enough time to grocery shop, clean out the fridge, or make progress on a big project. Would you see two hours for yourself as special or even selfish? Or could you see it as necessary? A promise. A declaration that says: I matter. Two hours is never wasteful. It’s time to nourish your own transformation and peace of mind. It’s an act of honoring the multitudes that exist within you—your need for rest, for space, for creativity, for intention. What would you do with two hours? Would you walk along the beach? Read poetry? Sit with a friend, or make tea by a fire? Would you move your body in a way that brings you back to center? Would you give yourself silence, or let your heart explore something new? Two hours can bring you back to yourself. They can open more space inside, so you can meet your life with kindness, hope, and optimism. This fall, as the light shifts in our afternoons and evenings, let’s shift with it.

In our October workshop, we’ll begin with movement—connecting body to soul—then move into our guided journaling. This session will differ from those before: we’ll explore obstacles (or as we like to call them, blocks)—the ones that stumble us, and the ones that build us — through the lens of the Enneagram. Two hours is enough time. Two hours can lighten you, free you, return you to your creative center. We hope you’ll join us and give yourself the gift of this time to let go and begin again.

✨ This Week’s Gentle Prompt

Ujjayi Breath/Ocean Breath

Inhale slowly through your nose and as you exhale, slightly constrict the back of your throat, as if fogging up a mirror, but with your mouth closed. This creates a gentle ocean-like sound and helps us feel calm and grounded.

Continue for several slow and deep rounds of breath with a relaxed and rooted posture.

Oh man, it’s back to school time, and for these two former school teachers, September will always possess a new year, a new you sort of feeling. We want to sign up for all the classes, buy all the supplies, relish in the newness of a fresh notebook, sketchbook, planner, and then ...not want to mess it up. Yes, our perfectionism likes to rear its ugly head this time of year. The “I’m not good enough” demon shows up and says, your work would be better if, your art would be better if, your yoga practice would be better if, YOU would be better if ...but we are here to tell you not to listen to it. Go deeper. Ask yourself some questions about your own needs and desires rather than what you are hoping to prove to others. Can you be curious about who you are NOW rather than who you want to be in the future? Can you make this back to school season, the season of back to YOU? What door to yourself are you willing to open? What are you doing in that room? What are you doing every day, right NOW, that will help you realize this version of yourself that you are hoping to discover? As you get bombarded with fall content, think twice before committing yourself to a yearlong class, maybe all you need is a one hour refresher to remind yourself of who you are, to gather with others, maybe all you need is an hour on your mat, in your studio, in your kitchen, in your garden, to remind you that it is your own beautiful hands that have the power to make beautiful things.

Practice your Box Breath:

Box breathing is a simple deep-breathing technique used to calm the mind and body.

• Inhale slowly through your nose for 4 seconds

• Hold your breath for 4 seconds.

• Exhale slowly through your mouth for 4 seconds.

• Hold again for 4 seconds.

Repeat this cycle for 4–5 minutes, or as long as needed to feel centered and calm.
