I love books. I love finding great ones, talking about them, and helping get them into the hands of kids, so that’s exactly why I’m excited to share this with you!

One Person Is Sending Books to an Entire Classroom

This is something that honestly deserves to be shouted from the rooftops.

Rita Reed has provided the funds to send a book to every student in an entire classroom.

She didn’t ask for recognition or for teachers to follow her. She just wants some kids to take a book home and cherish it.

So if you’re a teacher and would love to have a book for each student in your classroom, just reply back to this email that you are interested. That’s it. No following, sharing, or jumping through hoops required.

I do, however, strongly encourage you to follow Rita because I think the world could use more people like her.

I also want to give a shout-out to Jannesy DeLeon, the author of Tag! You’re It. I think you’ll find her story incredibly inspiring, too.

This is part of our Books Into Hands Initiative, which is all about getting children’s books into classrooms, school libraries, and into the hands of kids who can use them.

A Book Worth Getting Out the Construction Paper For

I came across a new craft book that I think is worth putting on your radar, especially if you have kids who love making things.

Easy Peasy Paper Projects: 50 Super Simple Crafts for Kids Using Low-Cost and Recycled Materials by Andreja Vučajnk includes 50 projects that kids can make using simple, inexpensive, and recycled materials.

We’re talking wiggly snakes, paper ball birds, little paper houses, a chomping dinosaur puppet, a snappy alligator, and plenty more.

And probably my favorite part? I’m pretty sure you already have most of what you need for the crafts.

The book is currently available for pre-order, so if you’re looking for some new ideas to keep kids busy once school is back in full swing, this is one to keep in mind.

I’ve been working on something that is finally getting VERY close to being finished. It’s only taken me about 2 years…

I’m currently finalizing the last page of Not So Scary Mary!

If you’ve been following along, you may know that this is my next picture book, and I’m hoping to publish it in September.

Which means...

There is still plenty of time to get it before Halloween!

Not So Scary Mary is a Halloween story about what happens when things don’t go according to plan.

Mary wants to be scary for Halloween, but none of the costumes she tries seem to work out quite the way she imagined. Eventually, she decides that maybe she doesn’t need the perfect costume after all.

I’m really excited about this one, and I can’t for you to check it out!

Kids Ask Authors Answer: Judy McGee Joins Us This Thursday

Our next Kids Ask Authors Answer episode is coming up this Thursday, and we’ll be welcoming Judy McGee, author of Pennygirl’s Rescue.

If you haven’t watched the read-aloud yet, now is the perfect time.

Pennygirl’s Rescue follows a brave rescue dog searching for her forever home and opens the door to wonderful conversations about kindness and second chances.

After watching, have your kids send in their questions for Judy! One of my favorite parts of this series is hearing what children are curious about.

You can reply directly to this email with your child’s question, and we’ll do our best to include it during the interview (make sure to include their name and age).

Books Into Hands Update: 100+ Books Donated!

I have some exciting news to share about our Kids Ask Authors Answer Books Into Hands Initiative.

We launched this project with a simple goal, which was to help get more books into schools and libraries.

Thanks to the generosity of children’s book authors, we have now received more than 100 donated books for the program!

Even better, we’ve officially started mailing books out to teachers and librarians.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to see books moving from authors’ hands into classrooms, school libraries, and the hands of young readers.

Thank you to every author who has donated a book, every educator who has requested one, and everyone who has helped spread the word. This project is still growing, and I’m excited to see how many children we can reach together.

Summer is flying by over here.

We’ve been finding lots of ways to keep books part of our summertime routine: library trips, reading together, participating in our library’s summer reading program, (ahem!) Kids Ask Authors Answer. I also went to the Grand Canyon for the first time! Definitely recommend it as a family trip

So parents who are looking for new bedtime stories, teachers who are building your classroom library, and/or grandparents searching for books for their grandkids, this is a great chance to discover new authors and download free books.

Do You Know a Child Who Needs Books?

I was thinking recently about how easy it is to take books for granted.

Most of us can walk into a bookstore, library, or even our own homes and find something to read. But not every child has that opportunity.

That’s why we’re starting something new.

If you know a classroom, library, family, homeschool group, or child who could benefit from more books, reply to this email and tell me a little about their situation.

We’re building a list of people who need books so that as funding and donations become available, we can help connect more kids with stories. We currently have an opportunity to offer a whole class books for each kid in their class!

Last week was a busy one between Earth Day and National Library Week, and I ended up focusing on Earth Day, but I didn’t want to skip over how important libraries are in our homes and classrooms.

Libraries have always been a magical place where kids can explore books and so much more. So this week, I wanted to lean into that idea of finding stories that surprise us.

Just a little reminder: this isn’t meant to be “one more thing” on your list. It’s just a simple question and activity you can use to spark conversation with your kids and connect through books in a fun way.

Question of the Week (Try this with Your Kid):

If you could walk into a library and find a book written just for you, what would it be about?

Hannah (8): “A chapter book about how to get American Doll stuff for Pinky [her favorite stuffed bunny].”

Mary (4): “Coogli [her favorite blanket] and me go to a pretty restaurant. They have ice cream there and there’s a lot of presents and Santa is there.”

Try This Fun Activity:

Have your child “design” their dream library book.

They can:

Draw the cover of the book
Give it a title
Decide who the main character is
And what adventure happens inside

It’s such a simple way to see what they’re drawn to right now, and honestly it’s really amazing to see what they come up with.

Try This Question With Your Kids This Week 🌎

With Earth Day coming up, here’s a simple question you can try with your kids to get them thinking about the world around them; it led to some pretty fun answers over here.

Question of the Week:

If you could create your own planet, what would it look like, and what would live there?

Hannah (8): “It would be called Pinky Planet. Everything would be miniature, and Pinky [her stuff bunny] would be alive.”

Mary (4): “It would be green, and yellow, and blue. Astronauts [would live on it].”

Try This Fun Activity:

Have your child design their own planet.

They can:

Draw or paint what it looks like
Name their planet
Decide what lives there
And how they take care of it

It’s a simple way to connect imagination with Earth Day and get kids thinking about the world in their own way.

The Funny Question That Got My Kids Talking

I asked my kids one simple question… and it led to one of the funniest conversations we’ve had all week.

Lately, I’ve been trying something different.

Instead of asking “how was your day?” (and getting the usual “good”), I started asking more fun, unexpected questions, and it has completely changed our conversations.

So I’m trying something new here too.

Each week, I’ll send one simple question you can ask your kids, along with a quick activity and a book to go with it, or another really cool find I’ve found. Something easy, meaningful, and actually fun to use.

Question of the Week:

If you could combine two animals to make one brand new animal, which two would you pick and why?

Hannah (8): “A bunny, a dog, and a turtle because they are all cute and I really like them.”

Mary (4): “A dinosaur and a skunk… because then it will toot.” (There were a lot of giggles after that one.)

Try This Fun Activity:

Have your child draw their new animal, give it a name, and decide where it lives and what it eats.

This Week’s Book Pairing:

Dogfish and the Gift of Inclusion is a sweet, heartwarming story about friendship and making sure everyone feels included. When one friend goes missing before a big celebration, the group works together to find him because the party doesn’t start until everyone is there.

The author recently released a new book focused on experiencing the loss of a pet. If your family is going through that, I am so sorry. Losing a pet is incredibly hard, and this story offers a gentle way to help kids process those feelings and remember the love they shared.

We are now on Teachers Pay Teachers! Not every book is up yet, but we are adding resources regularly so families and classrooms can access read-aloud lessons and activities for FREE.

What’s New on Kids Ask Authors Answer

We have some really fun episodes coming up on Kids Ask Authors Answer:

• This Friday, we’re welcoming Tanya Acquista, author of Money Time, a thoughtful book that helps kids think about time management by comparing time to money. It’s such a smart and relatable concept for kids.

• On February 19, we’ll have Asa Biggs joining us. He wrote The Past Pizza Parlor when he was just 12 years old (he’s just a littler older now!), and our read-along for the book was released today. It’s always inspiring for kids to see what other kids are capable of creating.

Festive Christmas Sensory Bin Ideas

Since so many of you told me you love sensory play, here are a few easy, holiday-themed bins that are perfect for toddlers through early elementary:

I am so excited to share what’s happening in our corner of the children’s book world this month.

International NICU Read-A-Thon (Sept 8–10) - FREE eBooks!

From September 8 to 10 families everywhere are invited to join the International NICU Read-A-Thon with Babies With Books. This event celebrates the power of reading with children, starting as early as newborns in the Neonatal ICU.

As part of the read-a-thon you can download a wonderful collection of FREE eBooks. These titles feature themes of health and affirmation, family love, and fun with animals. They are designed to comfort, uplift, and entertain the whole family. This is my 3rd year participating in this wonderful event, and I have two books you can grab for FREE!

Why is this event so important? Because research shows that reading to babies can:

Support healthy brain development
Soothe and calm in stressful environments
Strengthen parent and baby bonding
Create habits that encourage a lifelong love of reading

Kids Ask Authors Answer: Our First Chapter Book!

Our YouTube series Kids Ask Authors Answer has reached an exciting milestone. We just featured our very first full chapter book read aloud, and it is such a special story.

The book, JJ and Frijolitio by Victoria Cepeda, follows JJ, a preteen gamer in New Jersey, and Frijolito, an adorable dog from the Dominican Republic searching for his forever person. Their journeys collide in a heartwarming tale filled with hope, family, and connection.

This story is especially meaningful because it is multiethnic and disability-inclusive while remaining free of stereotypes. Kids will see that we often have more in common than meets the eye. Parents and teachers will love how the book sparks conversations about friendship, cultural connections, family bonds, courage, and the joy of adopting rescue animals.

The full read aloud is about one hour and fifteen minutes, making it perfect to enjoy in smaller chunks. There is still plenty of time to watch and send in your child’s questions for the author. The live interview will be happening on September 18 and we would love to feature your child’s curiosity in the Q&A.
