**Listen to“SIBONEY” on Spotify HERE

Siboney: Lecuona, Tom Waits and Other Unexpected Encounters

Cuba, the Pearl of the Caribbean: forgotten, misunderstood, mythologized. The island that, during the first decades of the twentieth century, became North America’s great tropical destination, a playground for the jet set and the intellectual elite; Hemingway’s home, Al Capone’s getaway. The birthplace of legendary nightclubs, the Tropicana, great orchestras, and, behind them all, extraordinary composers.

It was there that Siboney (1927) was born, inspired by the brilliant Cuban pianist and composer Ernesto Lecuona. Immortalized by voices such as Rita Montaner and Xiomara Alfaro, the song has since been interpreted countless times in every imaginable style. It is one of those melodies that many younger generations may not recognize by name, yet somehow remains woven into the collective sonic memory of Latin America.

Many of those recordings found their way into my parents’ home in Colombia through public radio, CDs, and my father’s record collection. Among them, I remember an overly polished version by Plácido Domingo that became popular during my childhood and would occasionally soundtrack our family road trips. It was only natural that, when I began thinking about Latin American standards I wanted to reinterpret, Siboney eventually came to mind, even though, strangely enough, I had never performed it in any of my previous Latin American repertoires.

But before I took my first steps toward it, I had to dig deeper, find connections that would excite me and allow me to imagine a version of it. Something that would excite me as much as hearing that rare Tom Jones’ cover of “Bad as Me” (originally by Tom Waits) that he recorded for his 2012 album *Spirit in the Room*.

In that search, I came across a recording from the 1960s by Connie Francis that immediately caught my attention. It came much closer to the sonic world I was curating for Mango Motel. Coincidentally, it is also the version Wong Kar-wai used in his film 2046.

What fascinated me about this recording was that it had something the more “stylized” versions I’d heard before seemed to be missing: a different point of view. It wasn’t a Latin perspective, and that was exactly what drew me in. Connie Francis’s accent, along with percussion that sounded like it came from somewhere else while still evoking the caney and the whisper of palm trees, created a fascinating contrast. Those sounds resonated with something I had already begun to notice in my research: a musical encounter that had been quietly taking shape from the 1940s through the early 1960s, fueled by postwar Latin American migration to the United States.

That's when I started connecting the dots between Xavier Cugat, Juan García Esquivel, and the whole world of exotica. It was a movement shaped by a colonial fascination with the tropics, creating imagined versions of the "exotic" through sound. But over time, those same sounds and aesthetics were reclaimed, reimagined, and transformed by Latin American artists, both at home and across the U.S.

It’s impossible to separate these cultural crossings from cinema. And in Latin America, what better example than Mexican film noir, where gangsters linger in imaginary cabarets while tropical dancers perform beneath painted palm trees? Or Tongolele, born in New York and transformed into a legend in Mexico. These are the kinds of unexpected connections and cultural mashups that have shaped and continue to shape the ongoing conversation between North and South.

Out of all these reflections came my version of Siboney for Mango Motel. It couldn’t help but carry my own migrant experience too: that of someone who speaks Spanish, listens to Tom Waits, and imagines an impossible conversation between him, Ernesto Lecuona, Tom Jones, and Tongolele.

**LISTEN TO “SIBONEY” ON SPOTIFY HERE

Thanks for reading!

“Ojos Bonitos” Video Oficial (Director: Diego Barajas)

The Power of Melancholy in Andean Music

* Notes on “Ojos Bonitos” from the album Mango Motel

The marvelous world of the Andes: imposing, sacred, silent, immense; stretches across the South American continent from Chile to Venezuela and Colombia, passing through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. In its mountains, the echoes of stories from other times have become entangled: millennia of history, ancestral cultures, and living traditions that persist to this day. It is the home of the majestic condor and of ancient civilizations such as the Inca and the Aymara. It is this universe that has inspired this version of the beautiful traditional song “Ojos Bonitos,” also known as “Ojos Azules.” (blue eyes in English)

“Ojos Azules” is one of the most widely interpreted Andean songs of all time. Its authorship is claimed by both Peru and Bolivia, and there is even a registered attribution to a Bolivian composer. Yet in conversations with musicians, journalists, and musicologists familiar with the subject, the debate around its origin remains unresolved. Many consider that it belongs rather to the people: one of so many traditional songs transmitted from generation to generation by the Andean communities of the South American continent.

From Colombia, at the northern edge of the great Andean mountain range, I have been listening to this song since I was a child. School bands, Andean music ensembles, and even music classes with recorder lessons made us learn this melody, embedding it deep into our collective subconscious.

Perhaps for that reason, while deciding which songs I was going to include in this project, I set myself the task of investigating more about this classical, almost “overplayed,” piece from my childhood. While I was researching, I discovered that there existed an older and more traditional version from Peru, titled “Ojos Bonitos,” which I found beautiful and whose title made even more sense, since most people in our region have dark eyes.

So, trying to capture the essence of what the song transmits and, at the same time, open a sonic dialogue between north and south, this version emerged and ultimately became part of my album Mango Motel.

From all this work I was left with a reflection about the feeling of the Andean peoples, about the feeling of the mountain. Something I have personally experienced, having been born in the Altiplano, is that inexorable nostalgia, or perhaps that inexplicable melancholy that the landscape itself inspires in the daily life of those of us who have been born in this region. It is not sadness. It is something closer to contemplation: to feel part of a whole and, at the same time, conscious of one’s own finitude in front of the majestic mountains, the fog, and the cold.

This is how the music of the Andes is. It has a very special feeling: it is deep and contemplative. But precisely for that reason, it sometimes generates discomfort, especially in cultures that assume themselves as “tropical,” where it seems everything must be joy and color. There has always been a taboo, a fear of confronting that music that we call “sad” or “melancholic,” and which is so present in the ancestral pre-Hispanic sounds of our continent, especially in the Andean region, from north to south.

I would like to close with a text by José María Arguedas, who manages to express with extraordinary lucidity what this music awakens:

“Who can point out the limits between the heroic and the ice of great sadness? With this music a man can cry until consuming himself, but he can also fight against a legion of condors and lions, and against the monsters that, they say, inhabit the bottom of high lakes and on the shadowy slopes of the mountains. I would feel better prepared to fight against the devil listening to this song.

<a class="image-link need more poetry in the world. If poetry was so important from the time of the Greeks up until the mid-20th century, why have we lost our connection to it?

Since the Renaissance, we’ve gone from seeing the world through magic and religion to seeing it through science, technology, and business, leaving poetry lost along the way.

This has made our way of connecting with the world through words poorer and smaller. Today, with social media, instant messages, and chats, our language has shrunk to fit the need for speed and instant communication. How much of the world can we really fit into a single “prompt”? How much do we stop seeing and understanding when we search for quick answers on Google or other sites?

I think of the “Ghost” mentioned by Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel—the ghosts we no longer see in the streets, in the landscapes that have become invisible because they’re outside our screens. We filter everything through machines that decide what we see and what we don’t, guided by the rules of the sacred algorithm.

The universe of words itself has also contracted. Millions of words in every language are at risk of extinction, and with them, ways of seeing the world. As we shorten our vocabulary, we also shorten our concepts and our ways of understanding what surrounds us. What a powerful kind of control, one that hides behind the idea of efficiency and progress! And we still think totalitarianism and repression only come from governments...

In this new reality, there’s no room for poetry, because it doesn’t communicate anything in a clear or practical way. We forget that poets have always been visionaries. Through their eyes we’ve seen other worlds, understood our own, and imagined new ones. Without poetry, we wouldn’t have Homer’s epics or Sappho’s songs; without it, we couldn’t have created the stories we still consume today, even if they’ve become more diluted and flavorless.

In mainstream music, poetry is almost invisible. Many artists who call themselves “revolutionary” and claim to spend months or even years writing lyrics barely manage to create simple poetic ideas that say little and offer even less. It’s a sad but clear sign of the decline our culture and civilization have reached.

If there are no visionaries who can imagine other possible worlds; who can fearlessly explore the vast universe of language, then we will continue down the same path: the only path that has been so precisely imposed by scientific and market-driven language, displacing beauty and aesthetic mysticism with practicality and speed.

We need more poetry in this world.

Thanks for reading! She used to say that she sang while thinking about the words, and that’s why every word, every phrase, held a deeper meaning.

There lies the wisdom of Mercedes Sosa and her singing — full of poetry, pain, strength, and kindness. That is why she was recognized around the world, loved by many and feared by others during those dark years of dictatorship in her country. Her voice was the voice of the earth, the voice of a mother under whose shelter and protection everyone felt safe. She could sing anything — from an ancestral chant to a tango, a bossa nova, or a rock song — and in all of them, one could feel the purity of the words and the purity of the music.

When Atahualpa saw her “full of landscape,” he saw her full of wisdom — a wisdom that went beyond herself, or perhaps existed in spite of herself. Maybe that’s what made her great: she understood the singer’s mission — to connect beyond the self. While an album of original songs is an act of sublimating purely personal expression, an album of versions becomes a dialogue between what already exists and the artist’s interpretation.

Thanks for reading! It is an encounter between the song’s story and the performer’s sonic identity and personal memories.

Mexican composer Juan García Esquivel spoke about the importance of reimagining a song in the book Mondo Exotica: “I always preferred to work with well-known songs. When a listener hears a song he’s familiar with, he is likelier to notice differences in the rhythm, the chords, or the voices. He’s likelier to appreciate the work of the arranger… It’s something familiar, suddenly being presented in a way that’s very different and exciting.” In this sense, working on an album of versions allows the producer, arranger, or artist to present their sonic identity more vividly. It is also a valuable internal exercise: the opportunity to express a personal sonic identity while reworking a piece that is already widely known.

Tracklist:

OJOS BONITOS

A MELODY FROM HEAVEN

VOLVER VOLVER

SIBONEY

MY FUNNY VALENTINE

TABÚ

CARA DE GITANA

For me, Mango Motel (fully released last february) is a journey into my own sonic identity, exploring memories and the richness of classic Latin American sounds that have captivated me even more since arriving in the United States. The album is a collection of seven popular Latin American songs (except for “My Funny Valentine”), all predating the 1970s.

Born from a desire to explore the boundaries between dreams and memory, each song becomes a world of its own: where acoustic instruments meet experimental or electronic textures, and the past is revisited to inhabit the present.

Inspired by the magical and surreal universe of Latin America—much like the literature of Pedro Páramo or Gabriel García Márquez—Mango Motel revisits songs that already carry this spirit: authentic emotions expressed in almost dreamlike spaces through poetry and sound. The goal was to honor these roots in unexpected ways, blending acoustic sounds with experimental atmospheres that transport the listener to a dreamlike world.

Every reinterpretation became in the process a ritual: deconstructing and reconstructing familiar songs, highlighting the magical, the surreal, and the rhythmic, while keeping the voice direct and raw as the guiding thread. Along the way, this journey also became a dialogue between my co-producer Phil Spencer and me, connecting personal musical memories from two different regions of the Americas, creating richer and more powerful versions.

Ultimately, Mango Motel is a journey through memory and imagination. It’s a way to reconnect with my family, cultural, and musical roots, to have a dialogue with other people’s sonic memories and to explore new musical worlds. Each song becomes its own universe, a mirror reflecting our identities and the many stories we carry. I really enjoyed this journey and all the things I learned in the process.

OJOS BONITOS

A MELODY FROM HEAVEN

VOLVER VOLVER

SIBONEY

MY FUNNY VALENTINE

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" How is it possible that a song suddenly comes to mind… lyrics, melody, sometimes even arrangements or instrumentation? Later, when you return to it, you wonder: how did that happen? It almost seems impossible that a complete idea arrived and took shape on its own and was channeled or materialized through you. There is a kind of magic, a sacred process, at work; something that those with a special connection to the arts are able to receive and bring into being. That, I suppose, is what is called inspiration, or what poets call the muse.

But of course, inspiration alone is not enough to finish a song. I often think about how many “ideas” still remain unfinished on my phone or in my creative journal, either because their time hasn’t yet come or because I haven’t had the discipline and focus to fully develop them.

Rather than staying only within my own reflections, I enjoy turning to books or other people’s thoughts to find answers (or at least clues) about the creative process. So today I wanted to share a short passage about inspiration from a book I revisit from time to time. It is called Words About Music: A Compilation of Selected Readings by John Amis and Michael Rose.

<a class="image-link I found interesting the way he talks about inspiration and hard work and how the conscious and the subconscious always work together in composition and songwriting:

What is an inspiration? In general, a musical inspiration is known as a motive, a melody with which I am suddenly ‘inspired’, unbidden by the intelligence, particularly in the morning immediately on awakening, or in a dream. Did my imagination work independently at night, without my consciousness, without being bond to ‘recollection’?

My own experience: when at night I am stuck at a certain point in my composition, and in spite of all my digging no further profitable work seems possible, I shut the piano or my sketchbook, go to bed, and when I wake up in the morning, the continuation is there. By means of which mental or physical process?

(…) It has been my experience in creative activity that a motive or a two to four measure melodic phrase occurs to me suddenly. I put it down on paper and immediately extend it to eight, sixteen, or thirty-two bar phrase, which naturally does not remain unaltered, but after a shorter or longer ‘ maturing’ is gradually worked out into its definite form which holds its own against even the most severe, blasé self- criticism. This work now proceeds at a rate which depends primarily on my awaiting the moment at which my imagination is capable and ready to serve me further. But this readiness is mostly evoked and promoted by considerable leisure, after lengthy reflection, also through inner excitement (also anger and indignation). These mental processes pertain not only to innate talent, but to self-criticism and self- development. ‘Genie ist Fleiss’ [Genius is industry], Goethe is supposed to have said. But industry and the desire to work are inborn, not merely acquired.

- Richard Strauss 1940 .

<a class="image-link image2 — is it worth it? A sense of exhaustion has been surrounding me. I’m no longer sure if I want to keep performing, releasing music, and keeping up with all the social media and industry demands that I don’t truly enjoy—especially when it feels like nothing moves forward under the so-called expectations of what a successful artistic career should fulfill.

so I decided to take some time to reconnect with the initial force that led me to make music my main drive. In this process, I’ve come across a couple of books, including this one called “Creative Mythology” by Joseph Campbell. I haven’t finished it yet, but so far I’ve found some very interesting and inspiring ideas that might resonate with other artists out there. I just wanted to share a few excerpts

Thanks for reading! Experiences related to the innocence and majesty of love (…) is not what men have thought of others but the force of their convictions based on experiences of their own. Faith in one’s own experience rather than faith in what one has been told to believe. This mythology is inspired in the mighty individuals; men and women who have had the courage to be at one in their wanting and their doing, their knowing and their telling.

The intent of the old mythologies to integrate the individual in his group, to imprint on his mind the ideals of that group, to fashion him according to one or another of its orthodox stereotypes, and to convert him into an absolutely dependable cliché has become assumed in the modern world by demythologized secular institutions. This brings a new anxiety related to a new and painful realization of the depth to which the imprints, stereotypes, and archetypes of the social sphere determine our personal sentiments, deeds, thoughts, and even capacities of experience.

We move -each- in two worlds: the inward of our awareness, and the outward of participation in the history of our time and place. The scientist and historian serve the latter: the world, that is to say, of things “out there” where people are interchangeable and language serves to communicate information and commands. Creative artists, on the other hand, are mankind’s wakeners to recollection: summoners of our outward mind to conscious contact with ourselves, not as participants in this or that morsel of history, but as spirit, in the consciousness of being. Their task, therefore, is to communicate directly from one inward world to another, in such a way that an actual shock of experience will have been rendered: to a mere statement for the information or persuasion of a brain, but an effective communication across the void of space and time from one center of consciousness to another.”

This last paragraph resonated deeply with me and reminded me that there is something greater than numbers and commercial success: the true task or mission of art in society. An artist’s work is not just about documenting a moment in history, but about connecting us all, as he beautifully puts it, from one center of consciousness to another.

Notes on Making Music Independently (English version)

Originally Published in Zona Girante

Ana Barajas

All of us who pursue art independently face similar struggles, limitations, and freedoms, no matter where we are, yet each path is unique. Today, I want to share some reflections from my own experience—perhaps someone will relate.

I’ve been involved in music for almost 20 years, and much has happened since then. Since 2011, I’ve been living outside of Colombia, which I suppose makes me an independent artist of the diaspora. But what does it mean to be an independent artist?

I believe an independent artist is, above all, someone who manages themselves—essentially, an entrepreneur. The general definition (found in several articles on the subject) is: “An entrepreneur is someone who, from an innovative idea, brings a project they are passionate about to life by their own means, seeking ways to materialize it and assuming the risks and consequences that this entails.”

In music creation, innovative ideas and the desire to develop independent projects abound. The challenge arises when it comes to taking on the risks and responsibilities this entails, which often means that many great songs and innovative artists never find enough listeners or the opportunity to grow and sustain themselves over time.

In an industry increasingly dependent on algorithms, social media, and marketing, independent artists face greater difficulty breaking through the barriers of major labels, large budgets, and making their songs survive beyond the first two weeks after release.

Our challenge, as independent artists and entrepreneurs, is to survive in the long term within an ecosystem that is not very friendly to us.

Here, I want to focus on five key points that I will discuss in this article—observations worth considering that, from my experience, have shaped my journey through both successes and mistakes.

Independence and Creative Freedom

Nothing is more valuable to an artist than creative freedom. In this regard, independent artists have a clear advantage. Art, as a form of expression, is not motivated by money; it is personal, intangible, and unique to each individual.

At this point, the challenge is to keep the flame of curiosity alive: to explore without fear, open boundaries, collaborate, research, observe, listen, smell, and feel, so that we can later create with greater freedom. The more we expand the boundaries of perception, the greater our creative freedom will be.

The Relationship with Money

A large percentage of those of us in the arts feel some aversion to money. Although we sometimes dream of or flirt with the idea of being “rich and famous,” because for centuries this has been presented as the model of success, in reality, very few artists maintain a healthy relationship with it.

This may be because it’s difficult to find financially valuable opportunities, because we lack negotiation skills, because we don’t know how to save, plan, and manage money over the long term, because we don’t value our art enough, or because we think making money from our art is selling our soul to the devil.

None of these beliefs are necessarily absolute truths. The fact is that cultivating a healthy relationship with money and understanding it as a necessary tool to safeguard our freedom is an essential part of our growth.

Beyond the vain numbers on social media, true success lies in sustaining a long-term career, where freedom and autonomy are not compromised by our own inability to manage.

Critical points I’ve personally had to learn to navigate include valuing my work financially, learning to negotiate on equal terms, organizing budgets, planning, and applying for grants and opportunities for my projects. I am still in this process.

DIY (Do It Yourself)

Today more than ever, an artist must be “hands-on” in the development of their career.

Learning production, networking, video editing, designing promotional materials, constantly learning about different aspects of the industry, and finding a team—no matter how small—that believes in your music and is willing to work with the same passion as you do are all essential.

I believe it all comes down to an internal process, where it’s not only about making music but also about mastering many other skills that allow a musician to remain an independent artist.

The Ecosystem

No matter how independent an artist is, they don’t exist alone in the artistic ecosystem. This is another important point to consider. Even as a solo artist, music is created collectively.

Major and countercultural musical movements have emerged from local circuits, because that’s where creativity is nurtured. Performing live, listening, collaborating, and learning from others—especially in a local circuit—is fundamental to music. It’s from there that major sonic revolutions emerge, which today, I believe, are quietly happening everywhere despite a declining and unhealthy mainstream.

Mental Health

Artists have the opportunity to live a healthy, balanced, and free artistic life. It is necessary to break the myth and false idea of “success” promoted by an industry that seeks only to exploit the artist—the eccentric, untouchable “star” who ultimately suffers emotional and physical burnout, left alone to feed a long line of people hanging onto their talent.

Today more than ever, I believe that although the path can be hard, we can do what we want with our music on our own terms, without self-destruction or enslaving ourselves to an industry where the artist’s well-being is the least of their concerns.

Learning to say NO and to ask for help when needed. Learning to value time with family or close friends, as they provide the emotional support necessary to keep going. Learning to take breaks, rest, and care for our inner world.

I am still learning and working, walking a path that is always uncertain but exciting.

Thanks for reading! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

Thanks for reading!
