Anabel’s Grocery will closed for the semester on May 2nd. We will be open during the following times:

Applications are open for the Anabel’s Grocery Anti-Racist Action Grant! Any student, student org, or alumnus on OR off campus is eligible to apply for a grant of up to $500 to support work related to social justice and equity. Projects that receive funding can be carried out any time within the next year, but we do ask that grant recipients provide us with an update on how the money is spent. Applications are rolling, and we will begin review this weekend!

Anti-Racist Action Grant Application Cycle Spring 2026: can be found here

In 2020, a coalition of Cornell University students who are members of Anabel’s Grocery, Cornell Students 4 Black Lives, Dilmun Hill Organic Farm, and the Hydroponics Club created The Anti-Racist Action Grant. Grounded in the belief that every student, regardless of socioeconomic background, deserves access to fresh, nutritious and affordable food, the grant was created to support student projects and organizations working on anti-racist initiatives to address the many systematic inequalities that persist on campus.

The Cooperative Food Empowerment Directive (CoFED) advised during the creation of the grant and often stated, “food justice is social justice is food justice.” Issues of food security and food justice cannot be separated from broader social justice and systemic oppression. While the anti-racist action grant will not solve most of the issues we see at Cornell regarding food insecurity and injustice, it is a small way to bring student groups together and start fighting the bigger battle for food and social justice.

By selling produce generously donated by Dilmun Hill Student Farm and Hydroponics Club, nearly $3,000 has been raised in two years. The grant has supported the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and Basic Needs Coalition in making 50 meal kits for students before Thanksgiving. The grant has also helped discount food orders from Watermargin, a primarily BIPOC and low-income cooperative living house.

The grant is designed to reduce the financial barrier for groups on campus and in the community who are contributing to addressing issues of food injustice and racism. Thank you to our student food producers and Anabel’s Grocery for making the grant possible and for guidance from Basic Needs Coalition throughout the grant administration.

This semester, Echo is collaborating with on-campus organizations to collect and create student-friendly flexible recipes that will help students develop creative-cooking skills that empower Cornell’s student community to increase their food agency.

Flexible recipes are instructional recipes designed to easily substitute ingredients based on availability (BBC), saving users money and reducing food waste! We are focused on creating a community driven initiative that increases students’ food security, saves students money, and enables them to make more sustainable food consumption choices.

Express Lane in Anabel’s: We know sometimes people are in a rush and want to pop into Anabel’s to get a quick thing or two. In order to make sure you can fit getting healthy and fresh foods into your schedule, we are opening an express lane during our busy hours. From 12pm-2pm, Wednesday through Friday, there will be a lane for customers with 5 or less items to quickly check out!

Protein Energy Ball Cooking Demo: Next week Anabel’s will be hosting a cooking demo and sampling station for some protein energy balls made with peanut butter 🥜, oats 🥣, honey 🍯, chia seeds, and chocolate chips 🍫. A lot has happened at Anabel’s Grocery in the past year, but one thing hasn’t changed: our commitment to providing fresh, affordable, and nutritious food to the Cornell community. Our efforts would not be possible without you—our incredible customers, alumni, and supporters.

As a nonprofit initiative of the Center for Transformative Action, we rely on donations to keep our prices low and ensure that our local partners are fairly compensated. On this Giving Day, we need your help to expand our impact across campus. Every dollar matters! ✨

This Giving Day, our goal is to raise $10,000 to keep nutritious products affordable for the Cornell community.

In providing fresh groceries to over 600 customers per week, Anabel’s has become a critical resource on campus. Our subsidy fund enables us to provide essential produce and pantry staples at prices much lower than those of nearby grocery stores. As stated by our anonymous customers,

“Anabel’s has been critical to my well-being. It has allowed me to be well-nourished with fresh farm ingredients that would be cost prohibitive to me otherwise.”

“I’m currently in treatment for several nutritional deficiencies, and Anabel’s takes a lot of stress away by making it easy and affordable to procure my own nutritionally-dense snacks and meals.”

“Anabel’s has been a corner of this community. It makes campus feel more like home, offers a safe reprieve from the bustle of life here, and helps so many of us afford fresh healthy food when it is otherwise difficult.

Anabel’s is not just a grocery store–we also collaborate with several campus and community partners. Produce sales from Cornell Hydroponics Club and Dilmun Hill replenish our Anti-Racist Action Fund, which provides microgrants to student initiatives that foster equity. We’ve also strengthened partnerships with local vendors: among them are Laurie’s Grain-Free Bakehouse, a mother-son Dryden-based duo providing us with gluten-free breads and muffins; Stick & Stone Farm and Fort Baptist Farm, two local farms that provide us with an abundance of produce; and Wide Awake Bakery, our source of artisanal bread and granola.

In the past year, our impact has continued to expand. We hosted free community dinners with World Central Kitchen and Dilmun Hill (with another Dilmun dinner to come soon!). We brought on new vendors such as Edenesque (plant-based milks from Buffalo, NY) and Stony Brook WholeHearted Foods (upcycled butternut squash seeds and plant protein from Geneva, NY). And most recently, we offered 50% discounts to students experiencing financial need when SNAP-EBT benefits were halted during the Fall 2025 government shutdown, benefitting over 200 customers in a six-week period. Anabel’s has recently been made aware that providing 50% discounts to SNAP customers violates federal government policy. We are now offering the option of a 50% discount to all customers, but with the intention that it is primarily used by those with deep financial need. For students who are not in financial need, we are also offering the option to donate to the store with your purchase.
