The Story is as old as our recognition of time, and there are questions now about our nature, about how we got here, and about where we are going.

Under this Full Moon Eclipse, perhaps we recognize more clearly what has truly run its course — the greater story, His story, Her story, your story, the seen and the unseen.

It has been a long and arduous dream, one that in these times may have been losing its meaning before we even realized we were already entering another story, another dream.

Face value doesn’t count for quite so much now. We have seen too many masks and moved through too many fogs. And as we enter further into the Age of Aquarius, some of our delusions are becoming harder to maintain. What we once mistook for truth may simply become more visible for what it is.

But Be Careful About Taking Everything You Are Facing Personally, Or Armoring Yourself By Searching For What You Must Be Against.

Just Be For: For Life, For One Another, For All.

There is enough “Us and Them” in the world already. Create a silent majority of self and observe.

If you believe we live on a plate, somewhere you will find a gathering of people who believe it too. Almost any idea can now find its echo and return to us sounding like confirmation.

So open your heart and lean into the thinking that arrives from your own center. Speak plainly about what you know without a ventriloquist.

Whose Voice Is Speaking Through You?

And just as importantly, what are you saying to yourself? What are you communicating within yourself, for you?

You may find yourself looking behind you more often now. Some of your solutions are in the past — if you learned from the past.

You will recant and recount. You may see an old experience differently now, recognize the lesson you couldn’t recognize while you were living it, and accept that you can never actually return to where you have come from.

The Past Can Teach You. It Cannot Become Your Home Again.

And those last-ditch efforts and quick decisions that rise suddenly out of emotion? Stop and BREATHE.

Intentional breathing creates an interval between emotion and action. Give the emotion somewhere to go before you give it something to do. Breath gives emotion room to diffuse.

Belly Breaths

Before you rise from bed in the morning, lie still. Breathe and reach for the stillness within you. 1-3 minutes. You Can Do It.

Count 1, 2, 3, 4 as you breathe into the belly.

Count 1, 2, 3, 4 as you breathe out, emptying the belly with a soft squeeze.

Come back to the practice two or more times during the day. Sit. Be still. Breathe.

If There’s Fog, Don’t Demand That The Fog Disappear. Just Become Still Enough To See What Is Actually Moving Through It. And Notice.

Give The Fog A Moment To Move.

Repose In Clarity Before Deciding What Comes Next.

And Then Take Deeply To Heart: What Dreams Are Worth Building?

Not Every Dream Is.

“If Only I Work Harder, I Will Succeed.”

At what? And at what cost? What value are you setting in motion?

What are you building through fear, urgency, longing, love, anger, habit or hope? Because eventually we become participants in whatever we repeatedly feed.

Perhaps This Eclipse Does Not Require Us To Have The New Story Figured Out.

Perhaps it asks us first to recognize the dream that has ended.

To Bless What Taught Us.

To Release What No Longer Has Life In It.

To Listen Beneath The Noise For The Voice That Is Actually Our Own.

A Story Involving Desire: And The Ink Of Its Writ Is Appetite

In the course of her awakening, Psyche is given an impossible task. Before her lies a great heap of seeds and grains — thousands of them, different kinds all thrown together. She is commanded to sort them, each according to its kind, before nightfall.

Psyche cannot do it. Then the ants arrive.

One by one, these smallest of creatures enter the bewildering heap and begin their work. Countless tiny intelligences accomplish what the individual mind cannot.

It is difficult for me not to see the body here.

We may consciously choose the food and lift it to the mouth, but beyond that threshold an extraordinary ordering begins without our instruction. Food is broken down, recognized, sorted, absorbed, transformed, relinquished.

We do not command this intelligence. We participate in it.

The heap looks chaotic only from a certain distance. Come closer, and something is sorting. And in the body, sorting is followed by transformation.

In yogic and Ayurvedic language, agni is fire, but not merely physical fire. Digestive fire is the transformative principle by which something arriving from outside us can be broken down, metabolized, assimilated — made available for life.

Psyche isn’t asked to conquer the heap. She isn’t asked to overpower it or impose something foreign upon it. She has to discern what is already there.

This is viveka: discernment, differentiation, the capacity to recognize one thing from another and enter into appropriate relationship with it. And this, too, is something the body is doing all the time.

The Intestines

In Virgo season, I find myself drawn toward the small things: daily rhythms, hidden workings, the quiet discernments that shape a life.

Virgo carries the harvest basket. And Virgo has traditionally been associated with the intestines — that long interior terrain where the world is sorted into what may be absorbed and what must continue on.

The intestines themselves fold and convolute through the body, strangely reminiscent in form of the brain’s own folded terrain — as though intelligence, too, prefers a little more surface upon which to work.

There is something astonishing about digestion when we stop treating it as ordinary.

Long before we had names for enzymes, hormones, acids, microbes, membranes, the body was already performing its intricate work in darkness.

A meal enters us as matter and disappears into mystery. It is broken apart, moved along, met, transformed. Some of it crosses the intestinal boundary and enters circulation. Some becomes available for energy, repair, and the continual making of blood, bone and tissue. Some continues through us and is relinquished.

Science begins in observation. And sometimes scientific knowledge, rather than removing the mystery, makes the mystery more intimate.

Consider An Apple.

It Begins Outside The Boundary I Call Me.

Sunlight, Water, Minerals, Soil, Root, Leaf, Fruit.

I Lift It To My Mouth.

Hours later, something that belonged to that apple has crossed into my body and entered the processes by which this body continually remakes itself.

Where does not-self become self? Perhaps there is no single place where it happens. Perhaps the boundary is more alive than that.

Eating is an exchange between inner and outer nature: sunlight stored in leaf and fruit, minerals lifted from soil, rain drawn upward through root and branch, becoming for a little while the substance of a human life.

Sunlight → Leaf → Fruit → Mouth → Digestion → Molecule → Cell

The body does not merely receive the world. It interprets it. And we do not accomplish this through conscious effort. The ants do the work.

Countless processes — small intelligences, if you will — meet what arrives. There is poetry in this precision.

Digestion is one of life’s oldest expressions of intelligence.

The First Harvest Basket

My own relationship with food began close to the earth. I was born into a world of small family farms, where food wasn’t yet something I thought of as “organic.” It was simply food.

Animals grazed. Vegetables ripened according to season. Things were pulled from the earth and brought to the table. And what could not be eaten fresh was stored, preserved, and put by for winter. That was my first imprint.

Then, like many of my generation, I entered another food world. Coke and Pepsi became ordinary companions. There was coffee at too young an age, candy in abundance, bright packages and foods increasingly removed from anything I recognized as field, orchard, animal, root.

I didn’t have language for this transition then. I only lived it.

Years later, in my twenties, I found myself moving back toward the foods of that earlier world: vegetables, simpler meals, health-food stores, periods of fasting, and above all a renewed attention to what happened inside my own body after I ate. I began noticing not only what I ate, but how.

A meal eaten late at night could leave me foggy and heavy the following morning. Certain combinations felt easy; others did not. Hunger itself had different textures. Sometimes appetite arose from the body. Sometimes it seemed to arise from somewhere else entirely.

The important discovery was not a system of perfect eating. It was attention. The body had responses I could learn to listen to. Something in me remembered the harvest basket.

What Are We Asking of the Ants?

But There Is Another Side To This Story.

I have been speaking of the body’s intelligence with something approaching reverence — and I feel that reverence. The more closely I look at digestion, the more astonishing it becomes. But reverence brings responsibility.

I live in a neighborhood with many college students. I know something about what they eat because I see what is left behind: fast-food cartons, cups, wrappers, brightly printed remnants scattered along the street.

They are young. Youth is generous for a while. The body can carry an enormous amount of contradiction and continue forward. But I sometimes look at those wrappers and wonder about the heap given to these young bodies to sort.

Not because an occasional hamburger or soda is a moral failure.

Not because there was some pristine dietary past to which everyone should return.

The Question Is More Interesting Than That.

Human digestion is ancient. Our appetites are ancient.

The organisms living with and within us are ancient.

But much of the food environment now surrounding us is remarkably new.

Foods can be engineered for intensity, convenience, shelf life, texture and color — and to keep us reaching for more. Some products now occupy a curious territory between food as nourishment and food as manufactured product — edible, certainly, but increasingly difficult to trace in imagination back to field, orchard, animal, root or seed. Perhaps this is part of the sadness I sometimes feel: a broken lineage between the living world and what we have come to call food.

Eating can become detached from season, place, hunger, preparation — from the relationships that once made the lineage of food visible.

And so discernment cannot belong only to the intestine. Something must happen before the mouth. Psyche, too, is learning to sort.

The body’s small intelligences must work with what arrives. This is where viveka becomes more than a beautiful philosophical word.

What Am I Looking At?

Is It Food?

Is It Nourishment?

Are Those Necessarily The Same Thing?

What appetite is being answered here? Hunger speaks from the body’s need for nourishment, while appetite may speak with many voices. Is this hunger — or something else? The senses seeking pleasure, habit keeping its appointed hour, a longing for comfort, an attempt to soothe or numb a feeling we would rather not feel?

And Whose Appetite Is It?

There is no simple purity in these questions. An apple can nourish one person and trouble another. A celebratory meal can nourish in ways no nutrient table can measure. Hunger changes everything. Economics changes everything. Culture, access, time, loneliness and pleasure belong at the table too.

Discernment is not judgment. It is attention sufficiently intimate to perceive relationship. And I wonder whether this is one of the more difficult conditions of modern appetite:

Our Powers Of Discernment Now Live Inside An Environment Designed, In Part, To Capture Our Attention And Stimulate Our Wanting.

Psyche receives one impossible heap. The ants sort it. But what happens when the heap is continually replenished? Late-night eating, grazing without hunger, highly palatable foods that keep us reaching, portions beyond hunger.

There is something poignant in contemplating the body’s extraordinary resilience while continually adding to the heap. Yet resilience is not inexhaustible.

But who tends the threshold? Who teaches a young person to distinguish hunger from stimulation, nourishment from mere consumption, appetite from advertising?

Who Teaches Any Of Us?

I think about the young bodies passing my house, still possessing so much resilience. And I think, too, about the profound distress being reported among younger generations.

I would not reduce that suffering to food. Human beings are far too mysterious, and suffering far too complex, for such an equation. But neither do I want to pretend that the body is irrelevant to the life of the mind.

We Are Embodied Creatures.

Sleep, movement, sunlight, companionship, food, belonging, fear, pleasure, isolation — all enter the mysterious ecology from which a human life emerges.

So perhaps the question is not whether food explains our suffering. Perhaps the question is simpler:

What Conditions Are We Giving Life In Which To Flourish?

Psyche was given an impossible heap. The ants came to help her. And this returns the task to our own hands.

Before digestion comes selection. Before selection comes appetite. And between appetite and action lies the possibility of attention. Before the ants begin their miraculous sorting, someone places something on the heap.

What Are We Placing There?

Appetite

We usually imagine eating as something we do to food. But digestion is something the body does to the world. And appetite stands at the gate.

There are appetites of the body, certainly. But appetite also carries memory, loneliness, habit, pleasure, belonging, stimulation, comfort.

There are things we hunger for because they nourish us. There are things we hunger for because we have learned to hunger for them.

And Perhaps There Are Things We Consume Because We Do Not Yet Know What Else To Do With The Wanting.

Here Psyche returns. Her heap is not evil. The seeds do not need to be purified of their seedness. The barley is not morally superior to the millet. The lentil is not at war with the wheat.

The Task Is Recognition. What’s In The Pile?

This is this. That is that.

Each according to its kind.

What an exquisite image for discernment.

Not rejection. Not purity. Not control. Relationship.

Perhaps this is why the intestines belong so beautifully in the Virgoan imagination. The body itself is continuously sorting, selecting, absorbing, transforming, eliminating.

It does not keep everything. Nor does it reject everything. Life moves through both. Taking in. Letting go.

Virgo Moonth

So Perhaps The Invitation Of Virgo Is Quieter Than Purification. Perhaps It Is Simply:

Pay Attention. What Is Here?

What Kind Of Thing Is It?

What Happens When I Take It In?

What Can Become Part Of Me? What Cannot?

And What Has Completed Its Passage And Needs To Be Released?

There is the food on our plates, and there is what life places before us each day. Both must somehow be digested.

We take in images, conversations, histories, griefs, ideas, other people’s desires. We inherit ways of seeing before we know that we have inherited them.

Some nourish. Some pass through. Some remain in us for years awaiting recognition. So I find myself returning to Psyche’s impossible heap.

Which Appetites Nourish? Which Merely Compel?

Which Voices Belong To Me?

Which Have I Swallowed From Somewhere Else?

What Shall Be Assimilated? What Shall Pass Away?

Psyche cannot answer by standing over the heap and thinking harder. The ants have to come.

I circle back to the farm. Not because the past was pure. It wasn’t. Not because everything old was wise, or everything modern is mistaken. But because somewhere in my earliest memory is an experience of food before I had so many ideas about food.

Soil. Season. Animal. Vegetable.

Hands. Table. Hunger. Eating.

Perhaps what I remember most is relationship. And perhaps that is what Earth Medicina asks me to recover — not some imagined state of purity, but intimacy with the exchanges that are already taking place.

Earth becoming plant. Plant becoming food.

Food entering darkness.

The innumerable small intelligences gathering around it.

Sorting. Recognizing. Transforming.

Taking what can become life.

Releasing what cannot.

We call this digestion because we have to call it something. But sometimes, when I contemplate what is actually happening, the ordinary word seems inadequate. Somewhere inside us, Psyche’s ants are still at work.

The Heap Looks Chaotic Only From A Certain Distance.

Beginning with the Adi Mantra, we move quickly into Breath of Fire and a strong Stretch Pose practice, followed by rhythmic bouncing and stretching to awaken the navel point and bring the energy firmly into the body.

From this grounded center, the practice travels upward into the heart and upper triangle. It May Be Something We Return To.

The Sky Closes Its Great Eyelid, And I Descend Into The Well Of Sleep — An Eclipse Of Another Day, Its Work And Worries Fade As A Dream.

Every evening the body prepares for a quiet eclipse of its own. Hormones shift. The pulse slows. The nervous system relinquishes its vigilant grasp. And it is as though creation itself remembers that the restoration every human body needs requires darkness.

As daylight recedes, a remarkable conversation begins between the eye, the brain, and a tiny gland hidden near the center of the head. As we surrender into the growing intoxication of it, the body slowly turns from outward engagement inward, toward restoration. The daytime ‘I’ reigns over waking life. It chooses, judges, decides, acts. The body begins preparing for our disappearance without consulting us.

One Thing Is Certain: The Human Must Sleep, involuntarily drifting into the realms of dreams. As the darkness of night descends, the pupils of the eyes widen — not in strain, but in receiving — opening like night-blooming flowers to gather the quietest traces of ambient light.

In this stillness, the solar warmth of daytime awareness begins to yield to another order. The pineal gland begins its nocturnal release of melatonin into the bloodstream, carrying the ancient message of biological night — body temperature lowers, the metabolic pulse quiets, and the waking mind drifts toward the restorative waters of sleep. In the older language of the yogic imagination, we might hear an echo of Soma here: the cool, lunar principle of nourishment and restoration that follows the heat and activity of day.

And all the while, the pupil has widened. What appears to us as a small black circle is not a dark object at all, but an aperture — an opening into the interior of the eye. As the outer world grows dimmer, the pupil opens further to receive what little light remains. There is a curious correspondence here: as one field of perception recedes, another begins to emerge. The world we have been watching grows indistinct, while the interior world of image, memory and dream comes gradually to the fore.

Soon another dark circle will offer itself to us on a vastly different scale: the New Moon moving across the luminous face of the Sun for a total solar eclipse. The resemblance is compelling, though not exact. The pupil opens to receive light; the Moon passes before it and obscures it. Yet the darkness of the New Moon may suggest more than obstruction. It may suggest depth — the void, as it has sometimes been imagined: not an emptiness, but a threshold where the familiar light of consciousness no longer commands the entire field.

Consider the correspondence: the dark face of the New Moon, the dark aperture of the pupil opening into the interior of the eye, and the darkness into which we surrender each night in sleep. Each alters our ordinary relationship to illumination, inviting us toward the mystery of what becomes perceptible when the familiar light by which we orient ourselves is interrupted. Once across that threshold, the orderly dominion of the waking “I” begins to loosen. In the realms of dream, another language arises — image, memory, emotion, desire and symbol moving beyond the usual governance of reason. What remained beneath the bright occupations of the day may now find its expression in the strange theater of the night.

Yogic and astrological traditions have long associated the Moon with this interior, instinctive, subconscious realm of mind, while the Sun signifies the illuminating principle of consciousness and the radiant sense of “I.”

Seen through this symbolic lens, the solar eclipse stages an arresting image: the dark New Moon passes directly before the solar face. What ordinarily remains behind the brilliance of conscious identity is, for an interval, brought into the foreground.

The eclipse becomes a symbolic invitation to recognize the expressions of the subconscious within waking consciousness. Sleep gives this hidden material the theater of dreams. The eclipse invites a different question: what happens when the unseen enters the theater of waking life?

The mysteries of light and shadow in this eclipse season fall into the domain of Leo. Here we meet the sovereign within us: radiance, courage, creative expression, magnanimity, protectiveness, and the desire to participate visibly in life. Yet every luminosity casts a shadow.

Radiance May Become A Hunger To Be Seen.

Creative Expression May Become Performance In Search Of Applause.

Sovereignty May Become Dominance.

Pride May Lose Proportion And Become Hubris.

And here we look again into the dark aperture: the void of the New Moon, the pupil opening into night. And perhaps, for a time, we become the pupil.

For here there is instruction. Even excess may become a teacher of proportion. What enters awareness also enters the possibility of integration.

Who among us has not passed through the adversity of our own Leonine shadows? And with each dethroning, might we become more conscious of where the true throne resides?

In the subtle geography of the yogic body, we first encounter the throne of personal power at Manipura, the solar plexus — the domain of our personal sun. Associated with the element of fire, Manipura governs transformation, will and the developing authority of the individual “I.” This is no false throne. We require its fire to act, to choose, to establish identity and to make our way in the world.

The lessons of fire are not always gentle. Unrecognized, its excess may consume before consciousness understands what has been set aflame. Yet consequence may itself become instruction, calling us again toward the hearth, where fire is neither denied nor extinguished, but given boundary and purpose.

Through the stages and initiations of human experience, personal power may gradually discover that sovereignty is neither dominion nor an identity sustained by the gaze of others. Recognition remains one of our human needs, but when does recognition become enough? At what point do we discover that the gaze of others cannot be the measure of our own light? Recognition may nourish us; it cannot be the source of our radiance.

The yogic traditions have long regarded the thresholds of day — dawn and twilight — as invitations to prayer, breath and meditation. There is wisdom in meeting the shadows before we meet them as adversaries. At dawn, as consciousness turns again toward the world, practice offers a moment to gather oneself — to establish peace and alignment before entering the encounters and demands of the day. As daylight recedes, the creatures of the night begin to stir, and so do our own habitual appetites, impulses and unfinished reckonings.

Practice offers another way: to sit willingly at the threshold, to become the pupil before experience is forced to become the teacher. Breath, prayer and meditation do not spare us the rough road of being human, nor every dethroning along the way. But perhaps there is a kinder way for a pupil: learning to enter the darkness consciously, rather than waiting for darkness to overtake us.

And perhaps this is where the throne begins its ascent. In the subtle geography of yoga, the ascent from Manipura leads us toward Anahata, the heart center. The personal sun is not extinguished here; its nature is refined. Heat becomes warmth. The authority that once sought confirmation through the gaze of others becomes less dependent upon reflection and more capable of radiance. Sovereignty ripens into presence, magnanimity and the capacity not only to be seen, but to see.

The heart, then, may be the higher throne of the Leonine sun — not because the “I” has disappeared, but because it has learned a more generous way to shine.

An eclipse does not extinguish the Sun. The shadow passes, the aperture changes, and light returns. So perhaps the question of this eclipse is not whether we can escape our shadows, but what we may learn while the familiar light is interrupted — and what kind of light we carry when it returns.

The Sun Will Emerge Again From Behind The Dark Face Of The Moon.

The Pupil Will Narrow With The Coming Light.

The Daytime “I” Will Resume Its Place In The World.

But Perhaps It Need Not Return To Quite The Same Throne.

It was an unreasonable love. It was an inarticulate love… the love of the innocents for their sovereign… That unattainable majesty that propelled the masses onto the street crying and shouting adorations. The sovereign was beyond reach, but a glimpse as the sovereign passed by was considered a morsel of paradise… dissent and skepticism dared not utter the truths of any terror throughout the reign and the kinship. For paradise was indeed far, far away and only the blue misty pastures at first light, and freshest airs, hinted of its gates.

When hordes rampaged on days of sun and simple joys, stampedes of harrowing confusions and prayers crammed into the packed kingdom-comes of pews, altars, and baths of crimson. And life eventually regained itself but barely recovered in the redundancy through fleeting times. For what few can tell of the rains of tears and sorrows of the innocents? And one would say calamity came because it was earned, and another would say calamity came without cause.

But so did many first lights arrive and first fights with the kingdoms all out there somewhere while fading banners continued to wave and the road taken back to the castle was walked once more. There it stood, dark and covered with vines and thorns. It had always been there, but at its ramparts first light revealed it for what it was.

It is perhaps no surprise that the word “King” has become difficult for modern ears. We think immediately of politics, inherited privilege, or power over others. Yet older traditions often pointed toward something far more interior.

Where Power Becomes Stewardship And The Crown Becomes Symbolic.

Where The Kingdom Is No Longer A Nation.

It Is Consciousness Itself.

One Governs Not Subjects...

...But Impulses,

Not Provinces...

...But The Heart.

What we once sought in Kings and Queens may have been pointing all along, toward capacities waiting to awaken within every person. Every family creates heirs of one kind or another — not always to a throne, but to a way of being. We are fascinated — or sometimes find a strange comfort — in the search for the criminality of others. Perhaps because it is easier to prosecute the outer kingdom than to govern the inner one. Yet the first kingdom in need of justice has always been closer than we imagine. Before we seek crime without, we might first consider the crime in all — not as an indictment of our humanity, nor as a condemnation of ourselves or others, but as the unfinished places within us that still await justice, mercy, and reconciliation.

Perhaps this is the quieter coronation. Not the crowning of one above the many, but the awakening of a sovereignty that begins within. A kingdom where power becomes stewardship, justice is tempered by mercy, and authority is measured not by dominion over others, but by the patient governance of one’s own heart.

The world is full of stories about fractured relationships, but each one begins in a deeply personal place. During the astrological season of Cancer — a time associated with family, memory, and belonging — I find myself reflecting on the inherited wounds we carry, both as individuals and as a collective.

My own story is not unusual. It is the story of a child and a parent growing emotionally disconnected. As a child, it simply felt like the way life was. Only years later did I begin to understand how profoundly experiences from childhood had shaped me, surfacing as unspoken anger, difficult relationships, and a lingering sense of loss. At first, I blamed my parents. But after my father’s untimely passing and many years of self-reflection, another understanding emerged.

I began to wonder whether my story was really mine alone. The anger I carried, the emotional distance, even the silence between my father and me seemed to belong to something older than either of us. Families pass down far more than genetics. They pass down emotional climates, unspoken loyalties, fears, expectations, and ways of surviving. I have come to think of this inheritance as “generational wash” — an emotional atmosphere so pervasive that we mistake it for the air itself. My parents were carrying that wash long before they passed it to me. They lacked not only the tools but also the psychological language to recognize the pain they had inherited.

When this became clear to me I realized I could cultivate compassion and also be clear about my own accountability for many of my life choices. I could meet the ancestral story with empathy while also drawing a clear boundary: “The repetition ends with me. I will feel the grief of the wound, but I will not wear it as an identity.”

This resolve also shaped the way I lived through the ending of two marriages. Both endings might have driven into what was more common about divorce and the endings of marriages: things like bitterness, subliminal emotional warfare that included vengefulness and ruinous projection involving the custodial control of children. “It’s an inside job” came to mind, a commitment to self but also to the mental and emotional well being of all concerned. Many thought it very odd, our tribal family unit. One day I recall the lot of us at the river for an outing grandkids, kids, my X and his wife, the other X ...we had the best day… the tribe has endured through many changes ...kids and grandkids are grown.. And my daughter started to call us “the good vibe tribe”.

For much of the twentieth century, the ideal of the nuclear family was held up as the foundation of a healthy society. It promised stability, security, and belonging. Yet families were also economic units. Farms, businesses, property, social standing, and financial survival often depended upon preserving the family structure. For many women especially, leaving an unhappy or abusive marriage was not simply emotionally difficult — it was economically impossible. Beneath the carefully constructed image of domestic harmony, many families were quietly carrying unresolved grief, rigid roles, and inherited emotional wounds that had never been acknowledged, much less healed. The appearance of order often came at the expense of authenticity.

As psychology gradually entered the cultural conversation, we began to understand that children are shaped not only by what parents do, but by what parents cannot see within themselves. Every generation inherits not only love and wisdom but also the unfinished emotional lives of those who came before. As our understanding deepened, we also began questioning the belief that preserving a family structure at any cost was itself a virtue. The goal slowly shifted from protecting the institution of the family to nurturing the well-being of the people within it. Patterns once dismissed as “just the way things are” could finally be observed, understood, and, perhaps for the first time, consciously interrupted.

There is a subtle but important shift taking place in how we approach inherited pain. For generations the question was often, Why did this happen to me? While understandable, that question alone can keep us tethered to the past. Increasingly we are asking something different: What is the nature of this wound? Rather than remaining immersed in the emotional waters of family history, we begin to observe the pattern itself. We notice the inherited fears, the recurring reactions, the familiar roles we unconsciously assume. What once appeared to be our identity gradually reveals itself as an inheritance. And what is inherited, however deeply, can also be transformed.

As our understanding of family continues to evolve, something profound is beginning to shift. Increasingly, belonging is no longer defined solely by bloodline or obligation, but by resonance. We are discovering that while our biological families give us our beginnings, they do not necessarily determine where we find understanding, encouragement, or purpose. Family is becoming less a matter of shared genetics than of shared values and shared care.

This does not diminish the importance of family or our ancestry. Rather, it invites us to see differently. We can honor the family that gave us life without believing it must be the sole container of our emotional or spiritual belonging. Many people are discovering families of choice — communities, friendships, mentors, and creative circles that nourish parts of themselves their biological families could not. These relationships do not replace our roots; they become the branches through which new life grows.

Symbolically, Cancer and Aquarius offer two complementary perspectives. Cancer invites us to feel the depth of our emotional inheritance — our memories, attachments, and longing to belong. Aquarius offers the gift of perspective. It lifts us above the immediate intensity of the family story so that we can see its larger design. From that higher vantage, the emotional currents that once seemed inescapable become visible. We are no longer drowning within the inherited waters; we are learning to recognize the river itself. Once we recognize its current we are no longer condemned to its course.

Astrologically, Pluto’s current long passage through the sign of Aquarius warrants a profound reimagining of belonging. In many ways, this is the deeper work of our time: not abandoning the family, but expanding our understanding of what family can become.

Aquarius has long been associated with networks, community, and the recognition that our lives are interwoven within something larger than ourselves. As Pluto slowly reshapes this landscape over the next two decades, it invites us to reconsider what belonging truly means — not merely through bloodline or obligation, but through shared values, mutual responsibility, and mutual support.

At the same time, this transformation extends beyond our personal lives. Families become rehearsals for the larger world. Every family develops its own emotional ecosystem. There are roles we unconsciously assume: the caretaker, the peacemaker, the rebel, the invisible child, the one who carries everyone else’s pain. Perhaps it should not surprise us, then, that societies often behave like families writ large.

The family has always been a microcosm of the larger world, and today the world itself has become a kind of family drama. We are beginning to realize that we all inhabit the same house — Earth — yet remain entangled in patterns of domination, rebellion, exclusion, and silence that echo the dynamics found around countless kitchen tables. The authoritarian parent, the rebellious sibling, the invisible child — these archetypal roles are no longer confined to individual households. They are playing out across nations, cultures, and institutions, inviting us to recognize that the work of healing is no longer merely personal. It is profoundly collective.

Perhaps this is the higher invitation of Cancer. Not simply to remember where we came from, but to become wiser caretakers of what we carry forward. We cannot change the emotional climate into which we were born, but we can decide what atmosphere we leave for those who come after us. It is a profound realization to sit with: the moment the generational wash ceases to be an invisible current pulling us beneath the surface and becomes something we can finally see, name, and choose not to pass on.
