This Full Moon wrestles with themes of Illusion vs. Reality, Sleep vs. Awakening and Love vs. Fear.

Pisces is the sign of dreams. It belongs to the liminal world. A dimension close to that of physical reality, but somehow separate. The fish swim in waters where the sun from this world shines but not quite, as the light in the sea differs from how it’s seen on land. It seems otherworldly. It is the state of hypnogogia where we are only half awake. This is the perfect state for visions, mediumship, imagination, hypnotherapy and magic.

This state is also close to that of dreams… or nightmares. My least favourite experience of this state tends to happen in times when I’m unwell. I’m aware that it’s time to get up but my body remains inert. I’m too sick to move. I’m only semi-awake. I proceed to to get up, get frustrated that I’m late, I can’t get to where I need to be… I realise I’m still in bed. I try again to get up, I manage. I go through my routine feeling frustrated, something isn’t right… I realise I’m still in bed. This disturbing sequence continues until I realise that I need to choose. I need to stay in bed and let go of the need to meet other’s expectations, or I finally manage to summon the energy to get up. Prior to the decision, the only reality is illusion and confusion. It’s not an experience that I relish. It perfectly sums up the energy of this Full Moon.

The Moon sits right next to Diana. A Lunar goddess linked with the Divine Feminine, she is a goddess of nature, protector of young women and women in labour. She defies any hint of passivity in yin energy. Always accompanied by her greyhound, and carrying a bow and arrow, she is highly independent and has no interest in marriage. The Conjunction between the Moon, the Significator of Mother and women in general, to Diana, shines the spotlight on all that is yin. This is about subtlety, sensing, feeling and flowing. It can also be about reacting.

They sit opposite the Sun and Mercury, both in the sign of Virgo, the Virgin. We can think of this as a symbol for purity. To achieve this state requires sifting through facts, discernment and analysis. Mercury, strong in his own sign demanding clarity, but right next to the Sun, combust, blinded by his light.

Looking at this polarity, we can see a deep desire for clarity and truth. We can also see the temptation to roll over, go back to sleep and avoid the harsh realities of the world. Sifting through facts requires us to determine what is real and what is fiction. In a world where the endgame is “control of the narrative” through the use of story in film and drama, the manipulation of facts to elicit emotional responses through news and documentaries, misleading headlines (click bait), it is small wonder that confusion reigns. Yet there is a ray of hope!

The Virgin and Diana both speak of independence and integrity. In a world of deceit and a cacophony of voices competing to present themselves as “the truth”, independence and integrity demand that we turn to a different truth, a different light. In this silvery Moonlight, the world looks different. The light of the Divine Mother sparkles on the water, creating a beam guiding us home to heart and compassion. In redefining reality, we can see the world in its multidimensional glory. The tangible becomes that which is deep in our hearts. We awaken to the understanding that the real illusion is what we have been taught to think of as real. It is in this world, mired by lying voices, that we find illusion. This leads to disillusion and it’s easy to see that distrust of all we once trusted is tearing through the world like a wildfire.

What is reality? The tension is heightened by a Square between the Sun, Mercury, the Moon, Diana and Uranus in Gemini. Gemini is also one of Mercury’s signs. A collector of information and fast thinking, sleep is alien to this sign. Uranus’ influence is heady. Cool detachment is his realm. Is he adding to the confusion and aggravating it? Endless streams of information and hyper energy are double edged swords. Information without heart and lacking in discernment just leaves us burnt out.

How can we make sense of it all and transcend the tension? This Full Moon continues to reverberate the energy of Barbault’s basket as the Sun and Moon sit at 4 degrees of mutable signs. Uranus is inviting us to dance with uncertainty. Chaos is the natural state of things. We are always in a state of flux. Certainty and stability are illusions we try to create because we are so afraid of uncertainty.

We seek solid ground because we want to feel we have control over situations. The times in which we live are stripping us of certainty and control. Pisces, the goddess, yin, are reminding us that we need to look inward for clarity. Integrity comes from hearing our hearts and centring ourselves in that space. This is not about giving in to old traumas and patterns, it is about learning to discern between our shadows and the true light of the Soul. It is not about being passive but surrendering to the song in our hearts.

The other actors in Barbault’s Basket are Pluto, Neptune and Jupiter. Uranus remains in a Trine to Pluto and in a Sextile to Neptune. Pluto is in Aquarius, Uranus’ sign. Amongst many things, Aquarius is a sign of wishes. Neptune in Aries reminds us of the importance of faith in ourselves and Jupiter in Leo continues to urge us to listen to our hearts. One last little note of detail is Morpheus. The god of sleep is sitting next to Pluto. What dreams would we like to create collectively? When will we wake up?… Wait, are we awake already?

Eclipses have long been regarded as ominous. Total Eclipses, most of all. This New Moon is a total Eclipse of the Sun. The path on which it is total, or nearly total is where it is most potent. So what do Eclipses mean? Firstly, if you are expecting immediate events, you may be disappointed. Rarely does Astrology work like that. The effects tend to be slower, more subtle. You may think, “much ado about nothing”, but you would be wrong. The Eclipses are like breadcrumbs, showing a path. Put it another way, they can be seen as portals of energy which illuminate areas that have previously been hidden. In a time when political disclosures seem an almost daily event, you could be forgiven for yawning and asking “so what?” Here is the rub. We are awash with “new truths”, leaks and disclosures, yet justice seems to be illusive. Those manipulating the political, judicial and broadcasting strings, seem immune to any scandal. If the dirt shows any chance of sticking, the current puppet is removed and a plausible replacement is found, until the next time…

And yet… the tensions of this year continue to build. Barbault’s Basket last month, this New Moon, so close to the Lion’s Gate, a Full Solar Eclipse. Everything is pointing to real, lasting change. It’s as though every revelation is a drop of water, slowly eroding the towering cliffs, persistently carving holes until one day, it all crumbles. In our impatience, we expect to see sand castles washed away with the tide, but Nature works slowly.

We can now see this New Moon/ Solar Eclipse in a different light. Firstly, applying to a Trine to Lilith in Sagittarius. Lilith has been on a quest, seeking truth and meaning. The question of truth can be sticky. Propagandists know this only two well, experts at manipulation, in their hands, truth is clay to be modelled to their purpose. Well versed in the ways of manipulation, Lilith sees through intentions. She takes no prisoners and looks to find the meaning, the meta message behind what is being said. The Sun and Moon in Leo demand courage to face something we would rather avoid.

The Sun represents authority, power. The Moon represents the people. The Moon, will obscure the Sun. This is the physical manifestation of a Solar Eclipse. Will the people find the courage to see through those they have regarded as authorities, leaders, royalty and celebrities? That which is obscured, comes to light.

The New Moon will then sit Opposite the North Node in Aquarius. The Lunar Nodes come as an opposite pair. They are an axis of tension, past vs. future. The South Node is the tail of the dragon and pertains to the past. The North is the head of the dragon and is linked to the future. They sit in a sign for 18 months moving retrograde. They have just entered the sign of Aquarius. As the Moon sits opposite the North Node, she is at one with the South Node in Leo.

Aquarius in its purist form is about equality. It seeks to bring all that is god given, to everyone. It seeks a horizontal, rather than a hierarchical structure. Communities collaborating, sharing experiences and information. It is not about any particular economic system. It is not top down. It is not about imposing beliefs or ideals, excluding those who think differently. It is not about virtue signalling. That belongs to egotistical mindsets and the shadow of Leo. Holier than thou attitudes, lead to coercion and defeat the ideal of Aquarius.

We tend to think of polarities of signs as opposites but we can also see them as a continuum which closes a circle. The shadow of Aquarius can be as egotistical as the shadow of Leo. The Sun is strong in his own sign, but in Aquarius he struggles. Aquarius demands that we be selfless, even as we express our unique individuality. When the Moon touches the South Node in Leo, we are asked to let go of pride and prejudice, embracing the possibility of new ideas, new ways of being.

The recent Jupiter-Pluto Opposition echoes this message. Jupiter too represents those we might see as our betters, Pluto sees through all lies and illusion. Hubris will not be tolerated, a message that runs through many ancient stories. Pride, we are told, comes before the fall.

The message is clear, as the Moon, moves along her path and the Sun is seen once more, light returns. Bleary eyed, we might blink and ask “what just happened”? As we begin to see more clearly, new perspectives appear. Fragments of truth coalesce and a new picture emerges. Will we have the courage to deal creatively with the new reality and work towards a very different and less egoistic way of being? Or will we hold on to the hubris that leaves us powerless. This is the challenge of our time and this Eclipse depicts that choice very clearly.

The Leo - Aquarius polarity invites us to balance passion with intellect. The Sun is at his peak, sitting in Leo, he smiles on us all, inviting us to celebrate the joys of being alive. The Lion’s fiery heart is full of creativity and warmth. It is being augmented by Jupiter’s own expansive energy. Together they hold great promise and optimism. Anything is possible. They can also get carried away, lost in their passions, they can burn too intensely, and get lost in hedonism. Happily, they sit next to Psyche who has earned her position amongst the gods and can soften their fire, encouraging a higher form of love.

Psyche’s story is that of a great romance. Having been struck by one of Cupid’s arrows, she falls in love with him, Venus’ son. This wasn’t meant to happen. Born a princess of great beauty, Psyche was revered by all who knew her, and was even famous in distant lands. Venus, feeling that people had forgotten who was the real goddess of love and beauty, decided to punish Psyche. She ordered her son to strike her so that she would fall in love with a hideous monster. Instead, Psyche fell in love with him. In a further twist to Venus’ plans, Cupid decides to strike himself with one of his own arrows and falls in love with Psyche.

There are many details to the story, which I will not go into here, but the part that interests me on this Full Moon, is what happens when Venus discovers that her plan has gone badly wrong. She gives Psyche a series of seemingly impossible tasks. These are tests and Psyche passes them all. She has to take great risks, and demonstrate qualities of patience as well as courage, determination and perseverance. She is fully committed to Cupid. Upon passing the tests, she is rewarded with immortality. She becomes a goddess and this is one myth where the couple do live happily ever after.

Sitting next to the Sun and Jupiter, Psyche is urging us to commit ourselves to love and to aspire to the purist intentions. This takes both courage and determination. The power trio are sitting opposite the Moon, Pluto and Juno in Aquarius. This is a very cold combination. Aquarius is a sign of winter, the Sun is still at a low point but the promise of Spring is in the air. Winter has his cold grip upon the land but snowdrops and daffodils are speaking of hope.

Pluto is a god associated with death but death is an illusion. It is really a threshold to another land, a place of transformation and renewal. It is about rebirth. Sitting in Aquarius, Pluto is presiding over a time of renewal and great change. Many are speaking of a New Earth but before that could ever happen, Old Earth must die. Power hierarchies that have held the Earth in chains for millennia need to be dissolved. This is a painful process and there is no guarantee that Pluto will lend his weight to a New, non-hierarchical Earth. Power may stay in the same hands, decimating all that was, crushing all hope for real change in the foundations of society. All too often those in the seat of power, shape shift, hijacking ideals to quell dissent, offering hope only to snatch it away later in the Art of Broken Promises. The lyrics of the Who song “Won’t get fooled again”, ring hollow when time after time people are pacified with crumbs from the high table, thinking they are free only to discover that they fell into a trap.

Juno, however, might offer something more equitable. Known to hate hubris, she could help Pluto opt for a more humble approach to power. She is a Queen, and not just any Queen. She is Jupiter’s Queen. Sitting Opposite the King of gods, she may just help keep Leo energy from tipping into ego, while showing Pluto that real power is not about force or status. Aquarius is a sign of hope and ideals. The water bearer brings water that is to be drunk by all. Rain is not given to just those who can afford it, or who have the seats of power. Rain is the sweet water that falls from the sky moistening the earth and allowing seeds to germinate. Together with the Moon, Juno softens Aquarius’ cold nature. In traditional Astrology, the Moon represents the people. This is with whom Juno’s heart now sits.

There is yet more to this configuration. These two powerful trios in opposition to each other, are trining and sextiling Neptune and Uranus. Much has been written about the rare configuration of Barbault’s basket, which was at it’s peak only a week ago. This Full Moon picks up on that energy once again.

With Uranus in Gemini at the heart of this configuration, there is a promise, and the promise is change. We have no choice but to learn to live with uncertainty. There is a unique opportunity but we don’t yet know if are up to the challenge of creating something truly new. This needs to be a different kind of revolution. Violence brings more violence and power vacuums are filled by those who are hungry for power. Real change is quashed.

We need the passion and courage of Leo to be bold, painting with brand new colours. We need Psyche’s humility and determination to create with the purist of intentions. We need Neptune’s call for empathy to help us see each other’s pain and capacity for healing. Finally, we need Aquarius’ vision to inspire us to work together, sometimes singing different songs and choosing different dance steps, knowing that each makes a great contribution. Variety, they say, is the spice of life. This of course, is Gemini’s motto, so rather than insisting that we must all think the same thoughts, speak the same way, and follow the false pied piper to a world of conformity, we need to recognise false promises that kill creativity. We need to celebrate the value of individuals in community! We need to allow passion to be tempered by logic and intellect to be warmed by the heart. This is the gold for which we must dig.

This New Moon is in the sign most associated with communication. Gemini is the sign of broadcasting, writing and teaching. It loves to exchange ideas and information. Geminis need and seek company. Loneliness comes from having no one with whom to chat and bounce off ideas.

Innovation is another talent attributed to Gemini. This is the first New Moon in the chatty sign of the twins, since Uranus entered it at the end of April. As such, might it be giving us a flavour of what the next 7 years of Uranus in this most inventive sign might bring?

Communication is a two way activity. Good communicators are not merely articulate, they are also good listeners. Gemini can find listening a challenge. Broadcasters don’t need to listen. However, in order to learn, we must be able to hear what others are saying too. Whether tuning in to mainstream media, alternative sources of information online, or scrolling through posts on social media, you will notice that there is a plethora of opinion, often presented as fact. We are awash with information and sorting through it is exhausting. The frenzy of mental activity can result in nervous tension and result in stress and anxiety.

Leading up to her visit with the Sun, the Moon had a difficult encounter with Lilith. The Queen of the night has been in Sagittarius. She has been especially fervent in her beliefs and convictions. It turns out that Lilith has been seething. She feels her beliefs and view of the world are under threat and does not hold back. She is in full fury. Whilst in Gemini, the Moon is in a cooler frame of mind and although she sympathises and understands Lilith’s ire, she finds the intensity of fire overwhelming.

Edging away from Lilith, the Moon brings the Sun a message. There is a cacophony of voices. Everyone is talking and shouting at the same time. Those with power refuse to listen to anyone but themselves and are doing everything they can to switch off any voice that does not reflect their own. They are using power to control communication, thoughts and ideas.

The Sun raises an eyebrow. No one likes to be silenced! He reassures her, reminding her that Uranus is now an ally. The Sky god’s mood is always one of defiance. With his help, revolutionary change is on the cards. There are limits as to how much energy can be contained. It can’t be destroyed and suppression is dangerous as it can lead to explosion. Information will leak, creating a momentum that resists control. As to the chaotic chatter, he tells her that it’s a creative energy from which new ideas and inventions will flow. The trick is to switch off periodically so as to rest. This will rebalance the nervous system and enable greater inspiration and creativity to flow.

Reassured, the Moon’s next conversation is with Eris. Bold as ever in the sign of Aries, she echoes the Sun’s views and encourages the Moon to be bold in her speech. Next up is Chiron. In the last degree of Aries, he’s processing his experience in this fiery sign. The struggle for personal sovereignty requires assertiveness. This is only possible with honest communication. He encourages her to speak with integrity but reminds her to listen with compassion.

This New Moon’s message is simple. If we are to make the most of the opportunities presented by our technology, we need to learn when to switch off and when to listen. This is a most exciting time for new ideas and learning but we can burn out and become lost in echo chambers of ideology. Communicating with integrity means a blend of the courage to be honest, even in the face of criticism, and the ability to listen with our hearts.

Taurus is sign of spring. It revels in the blossom and beauty of bluebell woods. It is sunlight and green grass; the calves and the lambs in the fields; cowslips and primroses. It loves to nurture, and conserve. It holds a firm grip on what it loves. It never wants to say goodbye.

Scorpio is a sign of the deep. The deepest of oceans, the darkest of skies. It is a sign of complexity and intense feeling. Once, working with a client, she described her anger as nuclear. Scorpio knows that in order to be reborn, something has to be destroyed. You can see the tension of this Full Moon. The desire to live quietly and peacefully, preserving the status quo; versus dealing with the shadow and all of the complex, deep feelings associated with it. Something must die for new growth to emerge. How can we reconcile the two?

The complexity is exacerbated by the fact that both the Sun and the Moon, have not just been arguing with each other, but with Pluto and Juno in Aquarius, as well. Aquarius is an air sign. It’s interested in ideals. Ideals that can lead to ideology. Aquarius, Scorpio and Taurus are all fixed signs. Everyone is digging their heels in.

Pluto and Juno, believe they have the answer to the creation of utopia. The Sun in Taurus, a practical earth sign, asks, “how is that going to work then?” He looks at them and is unimpressed by their plans. They shout that progress is needed. The Sun replies, “what kind of progress, why and at what cost?” The Moon looks at them and agrees with the Sun, but for very different reasons. She will only countenance change on her terms. Worst of all, she suspects a power grab. Ever suspicious of manipulation, whilst in the sign of Scorpio, she says quite simply, “no deal.” Idealism usually comes at the expense of feeling, and with a few people pulling the strings. Arrogance of intellect, over the feelings of humanity, the top down model of power is not appreciated by either the Sun in Taurus, nor the Moon in Scorpio. Pluto and Juno are dumbfounded. They push for the changes that they believe are in the interest of all. The Queen of gods and the god of the underworld, both wanting to pull rank.

Yet, the Sun and Moon are not without power of their own, and they do have an ally. Leaving Juno, Pluto, and the Sun, the Moon picks up the phone and calls Jupiter, who is residing in one of his favourite signs; her home sign of Cancer. He’s in a happy mood and feeling both sentimental and sensitive. He agrees with the Moon and the Sun. Although he hasn’t got any answers for the impasse between them, Juno and Pluto, he encourages and emboldens the Moon. He confirms that he too suspects a power grab and that the good intentions presented by the ideals of Pluto and Juno need closer scrutiny. “The road to hell,” he quips “is paved with good intentions.”

This Full Moon is asking us to find the courage to walk into the heart of darkness. Recognising our shadow helps us to release our pain, grow stronger and walk tall. It also helps us recognise the shadows of others and stand our ground when they threaten our integrity. We can then walk free, honouring all and beholden to none.

Aries is a sign of beginnings. It is after all the start of the Zodiac. It indicates new cycles. This year has certainly felt like a very different year, but is what we are seeing truly new? A cursory look at history immediately gives me a sense of déjà vue. The aggression, conflict and authoritarianism that is sweeping the world feels too familiar… we have been here many times before! What is different is that this year everything has become much, much more intense. Given that we currently have the Sun, Mercury, Mars, Saturn, Neptune, Chiron and Eris in Aries, we can see the heat has been really turned up! Add the Moon and it’s obvious that this is a very turbulent New Moon. The faster moving Moon, Sun, Mercury and Mars will move on before too long. Saturn, Neptune and Eris won’t. Chiron will move into Taurus in July but return to Aries in the latter part of September. This means that although some of this intensity will ease, the fire will continue to be stoked for some time. So what are we forging?

The ingress of the Sun into Aries at the Equinox saw the intensification of this energy. Mars’ entry added to it, especially as the Sun connected with Saturn and Neptune. However, things really got hot as the Moon entered Aries and they both moved towards Chiron and Eris.

Chiron’s time in Aries (since 2018) has marked a period in which the need for personal sovereignty, integrity and authenticity have been in some way hampered or compromised. How do we assert independence and personal space without entering conflict? The wound is also the denial personal will, or agency, leading to the suppression of anger and deep frustration. Now as the Sun and Moon meet the Centaur, these issues are painfully magnified. To what extent are we overcompensating for feeling weak? Are we venting or displaying bravado to make up for insecurity?

These questions become even more relevant when we consider that shortly before visiting Chiron, the Sun and Moon have also been visiting Eris. Ever the agent provocateur, she is stirring up all the anger that has been held back. If Chiron speaks of the pain of the wound, Eris is screaming in fury. Hers is the voice of the marginalised, revelling in a deep need for revenge. Rather than weeping over the suffering of others, she rejoices, in what many would consider to be an unseemly manner, over the defeat of her enemies.

In short, this New Moon can go one of two ways. It can erupt with fury, due to deep pain and a need for vengeance. This desire for vengeance may be judged to be undesirable and distasteful, but it represents a deep need for justice, in a time when it seems to be as illusive as the Holy Grail. Alternatively, we have the chance to start afresh. In order for the latter to materialise, we need to understand the source of the fury and address it. We need to understand our feelings of vulnerability and work to strengthen them through compassion and understanding. We need to focus the heat on building without conflict. This takes tremendous courage. It requires us to feel the heat and the pain but think before we react. This is the opposite of suppression. It is a laser focused, strategic, targeted response. It is a show of strength showing true leadership. Only then will we be able to stop raging and initiate a truly fresh start. The forging of a new world. This would be the higher frequency of Aries.

Full Moons indicate a tension between the head and the heart. Pulled in two different directions, which one will we choose? This Month the Moon is in the diplomatic sign of Libra. She wants to weigh everything up and use cool logic to establish balance. She wants to discuss everything and use her charm to find an equitable and fair solution to the tension, but it takes two to tango. She wants to find out what the other side wants, where they are coming from so that she can turn conflict into a win-win situation. Will the other side be receptive to her charm, diplomacy and cool logic?

The other side is, of course, the Sun. Gaining in strength since the Equinox, he’s getting hotter and is in the mood for action. He’s in Aries, his second favourite sign. The sign of Aries is about the self and living in integrity. The Sun has recently been meeting with Saturn and Neptune, both in Aries too. Neptune’s language was a bit ambivalent for his liking, and Saturn was his usual surly self. They did however, support his desire for authenticity. Saturn’s laser focus was on the need for truth and realism. Neptune’s desire for dissolving could speak of dissolving personal needs and desires, but he could also be talking about dissolving anything holding back the true expression of self.

This then forms the nature of the tension. The Sun is direct, the Moon is subtle and in Libra she is sitting back watching him and tell him what he wants to hear. “Of course you need to shine! What is the best way to do this? You don’t need to prove anything, you are the centre of the Solar system! You can afford to be gracious.” The Sun considers whether she is being genuine or simply “managing” him. She speaks the language of relationship whilst wanting to reflect something of himself back to him. Yet she reveals little of herself. Hiding her feelings behind logic, only serves to alienate him. Where is her integrity, he wonders? Does she mean what she says? What does she actually stand for? He’s in no mood to be placated.

Waiting in the wings, we find Jupiter in the sign of Cancer. He is particularly strong in this, the first of the water signs, and although Cancer and Libra speak rather different languages, the Moon is at home in Cancer. You could say that on this Full Moon she’s bilingual. She understands Jupiter perfectly and might be able to persuade him to support her when the Sun connects with him in the next few days. Will, Jupiter mollify the Sun and soften his stance? It depends. Jupiter might just amplify the division between them. For him it’s all about feelings, logic is of little interest and his mood is changeable.

This Full Moon is calling us all towards peace. Will we let our egos, the need to prove ourselves or anger, get the better of us? War is not only something that is waged on a global scale. While we pray for peace, are we contributing to a peaceful energy or one of war? It’s time to be honest with ourselves and with others. If they object to our authentic expressions of feelings, how will we deal with this rejection? Will we be diplomatic and negotiate? Will we quietly resist by walking away or will we engage in all out conflict? This Moon beckons us to choose. Balance and harmony are the prize but it may be a while before we win it.

Each New Moon is unique, speaking to us of the energy defining the month ahead and setting the stage for themes that will unfold in months to come. This New Moon is extra important. We start by considering the sign of Aquarius. The Water Bearer is pouring sweet water for all to enjoy. The is water of the highest purity, it is refined, unlike the wild waters of the sea. It provides us with what we need in order to live. Without sweet water, there is no life.

Despite the emphasis on water, Aquarius is an Air sign, suggesting that the sweet, pure water is that of ideas. This is a sign where we dream the ideas that will unite us in our humanity, seeking connection and creating communities. Grass roots movements are of an Aquarian nature, decentralised, spontaneous, people joining together for a common goal and a shared dream. The water is for all, not just a chosen few.

So it is that Aquarius is a sign of change and hope. Spring is on the way. The days are getting lighter. The catch is, that we need to avoid getting so fixed on our vision that we condemn and exclude those who disagree. This is the way to tyranny and yes, Aquarius does have a shadow side. This shadow can also manifest as aggressive pushes for change and angry revolutions. With the Sun and Moon in a tense dialogue with Uranus, the planet most linked with rebellion and revolution, this New Moon could see many an angry outburst. The cause would be top down attempts to force ideology that is unwanted, on others.

Whilst the Sun and Moon hold this tense argument with Uranus, Venus is sitting with the North Node in Pisces. As this Lunar Node prepares to leave the watery realm and enter Aquarius in August, Venus sitting here, exalted in Pisces, reminds us of the need to be more forgiving and accepting of each other. There is something of a fated moment that provides the opportunity to practice compassion and allow Divine Love to reach us all, connecting with the highest frequency of Aquarius.

The union between Venus and the North Node is happening as Saturn and Neptune meet in the fiery sign of Aries. The last time they met, was in the sign of Capricorn. We saw the fall of the Berlin Wall. Interestingly, Capricorn is associated with structures and this union, literally saw a wall come down. In Aries, this paring could point to conflict. We could also see it as the dissolution (Neptune) of structures/ institutions (Saturn) that are war like or aggressive in their nature (Aries). Either interpretation is possible. We may even have both, as part of a process that seeks to wash away what is corrupt, to give way for real change… not the politics of right/ left, or top down, but a world where individuals are respected, the sanctity of life restored and where we work together recognising our common humanity. This would be the realisation of the highest frequency of Aquarius. That water would be sweet indeed.

This Full Moon sees the Moon Opposite the Sun, Mercury and Venus. She is in the proud and passionate sign of Leo while they are in cool, cerebral Aquarius. She meets them after some tense words with Mars, also in Aquarius.

What could the tension be about? Leo is fire. In this sign, the Moon shouts, “Follow your heart!” She urges us to be ourselves, to shine and find our uniqueness. This is no time to hold back or be shy.

Aquarius is about being in community, creating a utopia based on an ideal. It wants everyone to collaborate and be both creative and inventive for the benefit of all. The two energies although similar are still quite different. Leo’s joy is creation as an expression of self. Following an impulse from the heart. Aquarius values creativity not as self expression, but as a means of challenging norms so as to create a better world. It follows a vision, inspired by an idea. Head vs. Heart.

The difference between both impulses is highlighted on this Full Moon. The pull is towards Aquarius and the Moon may feel like a lone voice. As she moves away from the Sun she still has to contend with Mercury and Venus urging her to let go of her ego. However, there are two voices echoing her own. Ceres and Chiron are in fiery Aries. They’re saying that letting go of the sense of self is traumatic and that the right to be an individual is worth defending.

How do we balance both sides? It’s easy to see that that egos can get out of hand and threaten community, but community can destroy individuality. Following our hearts means connecting with compassion. If we take this highest vibration of Leo, we open our hearts, acting with compassion and generosity of Spirit. We share our passions with Love, we contribute something unique and special to the whole. We also offer respect and appreciation to others’ contributions. We can collaborate and learn from each other. A community is born. A choir in harmony made up of individual voices

This New Moon, like the New Moon of previous months, has a flavour of change. For some time now the Now Moon has been taking place in the last degrees of a sign. This one in Capricorn, continues this pattern. Within 2 degrees she will enter the sign of Aquarius.

Capricorn is a sign of structures and foundations. It invites us to ground ourselves and be sensible. However there is a mystical and sensitive side to Capricorn that is not often mentioned. The Capricorn is not a goat! It is a goat with a fish’s tail. This is vital as it speaks of a union between Earth and Water. Practicality tempered by empathy and sensitivity.

There has been a big emphasis on Capricorn of late and as the Moon entered this Earthy sign, she met with Mars and Mercury before reaching the Sun. You can almost imagine the conversation, focusing on fixing problems, critical, feeling a little superior and believing that they know better than anyone else. This would be the shadow side of Capricorn, the side ignoring the fish’s tail. This is also too often, the voice of ruling institutions, governments believing that they have the last word on all that must be, imagining themselves to have the right to control everything.

However, this Capricorn conference had more heart in it than you might expect. Jupiter sitting, exalted in the watery sign of Cancer, insists that hearts be open and that feelings be considered. The Moon breathes a sigh of relief. She’s never very happy in this practical sign and in the company of Mars, the Sun and Mercury, she felt outnumbered in her desire to soften the tone of the conversation. As she prepares to leave Capricorn, she connects with Neptune, also about to change signs, from Pisces to Aries. More watery tones, encouraging sensitivity and empathy.

The combination of Earth and water can be very nourishing. Kept in balance, the Earth’s minerals are delivered effortlessly through the medium of water. It’s a perfect time to connect with loved ones and make plans for the future, considering how to strengthen foundations.

The Moon’s next stop is Aquarius, where she almost immediately meets Venus and Pluto. Party girl Venus has gone into the underworld and finds its King, Pluto in a brighter mood than usual. Aquarius is a sign of hope, the energy of knowing that Spring is on the horizon. Yet, Pluto is still Pluto. The conversation, is uncomfortable.

Although the sign of the Water Bearer belongs to the element of Air, like with Capricorn, water is an important part of the symbolism behind this sign. Sweet Water being pored out for the benefit of all. Acting on this humanitarian instinct, Venus and the Moon bring in a pure light of hope and healing but Pluto wants his dues. Healing comes at a price… something needs to die to, the prize is resurrection.

This new Moon challenges us to let go of rigidity and of anything that is keeping us stuck. We need to do so gently, with compassion for ourselves and others. In doing so, we move into a space of light and hope ready to be herald a new Spring.

It was that time of year. Teddy was lying on the sofa and suddenly, Mummy appeared with some boxes. He raised an eyebrow and watched her closely. She opened the boxes and out came some objects that were familiar to him. He remembered that they would only be out for a short time and that it meant lots of fun to come.

A few days after Mummy opened the boxes, there was indeed lots of fun. Mummy and Daddy met with some of his Aunties at a farm. There was nothing unusual about this. It happened every weekend and Teddy always enjoyed the occasion. Mummy did some shopping and afterwards everyone had a drink and Mummy shared a Scotch egg with him.

On this particular Saturday, the fun did not stop. Everyone came home with Teddy and more Aunties arrived. There was a party which meant lots of food and fuss! Teddy lay on the sofa with one of his Aunties next to him and enjoyed the massages he was getting. He loved the extra treats and showed his appreciation of everyone, by giving them generous kisses. All of this went on, while keeping his eye on the cakes. He nearly managed to have one, but was caught just as he was having a nibble. “No Teddy,” said Daddy. “ You don’t want a trip to the Vet!” Teddy wanted to know how eating a cake could make him go to the Vet, but then he remembered. He didn’t want that experience again! Nevertheless, the temptation was sooo great that he kept trying. Sadly, everyone was on to him, so he consoled himself with the ostrich chew that Mummy gave him.

A few days later, there was more excitement. Mummy was packing. This wasn’t normal at this time of year but Teddy knew the signs that said, ‘we’re travelling’. Sure enough, the next day, they were on their way. Teddy slept for the long journey, enjoying his lunch when they stopped. He always appreciated a little walk and a chance for a wee. He never lingered when Mummy said it was time to get back in the car. Experience told him that they still had a long way to go.

Finally, when they arrived it was dark. Teddy knew exactly where he was. It was a great place. They had been there, not long ago. He jumped out of the car, very excited! Mummy was really happy too. There were some sounds that were new to him. She was listening intently, saying something about “owls”. Teddy ignored them and sniffed everything. He went inside. He loved this. No stairs, the kitchen with the living room, meant he could lie on the sofa and watch Mummy cook. Sofa and cooking, two of his favourite tings in one room! Best of all he looked forward to the walks.

In this wonderful place, Teddy just walked out onto grass. Every morning, he and Mummy walked along a river. He loved that she was so happy and the two of them went exploring. After lunch they would drive with Daddy to the beach. Mummy had brought special boxes with lights and decorations too. One day Teddy had to share the back of the car with a tree. This was a first! To begin with, he was a little worried, until he realised the tree was very carefully wedged and wouldn’t affect him.

Mummy was excited and started to “dress” the tree. Now Teddy knew the best was yet to come. He knew to be patient when he saw presents being put under the tree. There were visitors in this home too. He loved his new Aunties and Uncles and always made them feel welcome. Then came the moment when Mummy finally said, “Are you ready for your presents? Teddy leapt off the sofa and began to sniff. To Mummy’s delight, he always knew which present was for him. He gently tore the paper and began to play with it. Then he went back to his present, it was soft and it squeaked. Teddy loved the feel of it in his mouth. He decided to help Mummy and Daddy open theirs too. He just loved tearing the paper!

This was a golden time for Teddy. Mummy and Daddy all to himself; beaches with lots of seaweed to roll in ( last time he found a dead bird to roll in, that’s another story); and lots of woodland, which means lots of sticks! Teddy wanted to stay forever!

Then one morning, Mummy was packing. It’s time to leave she said. Teddy sighed. He loves his home but this place is really special. “ Don’t worry,” said Mummy. “We’ll be back soon. Do you remember, we’re coming to move here, very soon.” Teddy raised an eyebrow and wondered what that meant. Then she said, “And anyway, when we get home, you’ll have a lovely surprise”.

Teddy had forgotten Mummy’s promise. They got home and nothing special happened. She unpacked and they went to sleep. It was the next day, that Teddy understood what she said. At first he felt very let down. It turned out that instead of breakfast, he had to get ready to have his hair cut. This was only just better than a trip to the Vet! “I know”, said Mummy. “but when it’s over, you’ll have a wonderful surprise. I promise!” Teddy endured his grooming appointment and then Mummy and Daddy took to him to his favourite woodland near home. She brought out the suit that he only wore when there was snow. Teddy got excited! He jumped out of the car and saw that cold, wet, fluffy stuff he loved! He ran and ran. Then he rolled and rolled some more! Mummy laughed and said he looked like a snow dog. Now he understood why they had to come back! Teddy decided that Mummy and Daddy are truly clever, arranging to have snow, to make up for the end of his holibobs!

This New Moon is in the optimistic and cheerful sign of Sagittarius. It’s party time as we enjoy the Festive Season. Yet leading up to this New Moon, there has also been a lot of emphasis on the need for reflection and healing.

First there was a tense conversation with Chiron. Old hurts and disappointments were brought to the surface, leading to sharp words and even arguments. This was then followed by another tense conversation. This time, with Saturn, emphasising the need for a more contemplative approach to the Solstice.

Now on the Eve of the Winter Solstice, the Moon is approaching a square to Neptune who is in his own sign. We could say that the Sagittarius flame is being dampened, or perhaps deluged. The power of the sea lies in erosion and flooding. In what way are we being invited to deal with feelings? For some it feels as though they are in troubled, waters and that optimism is a place they will never reach again. For others, the flooding is one of unrealistic optimism, leading to shipwreck.

Neither extreme is healthy. We need to navigate through this tension. What Pisces and Sagittarius have in common is faith. Both are linked with Spirituality. Sagittarius’ flame reminds us of Fire’s connection with Spirit. Pisces connects with our Soul. This is a time to dig deep, take a risk and have faith.

This is the time of Sagittarius. The introspection of the Scorpio period has passed and it’s party time. There is greater optimism but at the same time there is serious talk. What is the meaning of life? How can we live meaningfully? Do we want to live a materialistic life and dive into a consumerist Christmas, or are we seeking a deeper meaning to this time of year? How free are we really, and how can we attain greater freedom?

This Full Moon is a time for debate. Luna is in the chatty sign of Gemini. She feels bubbly, wants to learn, and share everything she’s been discovering. However, although what she really wants is light conversation, she’s finding that Venus, the Sun, Juno, and Mars are in a different frame of mind. They sit in the fiery sign of Sagittarius, Opposite her position in Gemini. Their mood is one of conviction and emotion. They talk about freedom, belief, and they are very passionate about what they are experiencing and feeling. They are so certain of everything ! The Moon’s mood is different. She wants to tease things out, carefully sift over the facts, before coming to a conclusion. In fact, she’d prefer to enjoy the season without getting too wrapped up in the meaning of everything, but she is drawn into the debate.

All of them are in a square to the Moon’s Nodes in the Pisces / Virgo axis. Funnily enough, they too point to a dilemma. The challenge is how to balance feelings, belief, logic and practicality. This dilemma has a tone of fate about it. It’s time to meet the challenge. Are we mature enough? Do we have enough discernment?

This is a tricky feat. If you are faced with other’s peoples beliefs and feelings and can’t seem to make yourself heard, it’s time to take a step back. Are you treating the ideas you’re sharing lightly or are you also attaching too much feeling to them?

We all need consider what is behind our thoughts and realise that belief and feelings are often driving them. When we can see that, detachment is easier and dialogue becomes possible as long as others are also able to be detached. If not, the answer is to treat things lightly. We can find others who will have a better understanding, and are willing to engage in balanced conversation. The mutable nature of all these signs suggests that letting go is easier than we might think.

This New Moon in the sign of Scorpio, is all about the night. Many people dislike this time of year, due to the shorter days, but there is beauty in the dark of night. For a start, we can spend more time stargazing. The velvety black, beckons us to rest and sit quietly, looking deep into ourselves.

This is also a watery time. The rain has brought us mud. This sticky wet earth is full of life. In other words, it’s time to value that which we normally ignore. Water is an important element here as The New Moon sits in the water sign of Scorpio and is part of a Grand Trine, involving Jupiter in Cancer, and Neptune with Saturn in Pisces. Feelings and memories run deep. Fury, rage, grief…intense emotions threatening to dissolve the dam of self control.

The Sun and Moon sit with Mercury who has been on a journey and returned with information. It’s time to revisit the past. There are times when what is under the surface must become visible. Things that have been hidden and ignored need to be revealed and brought to light. We are often required to go and dig to find what has been hidden, and this New Moon invites us to do just that. On the other hand, Mercury‘s presence means that revelations might simply be brought to us through conversation. Mercury did the digging and is bringing us a bag to sift through. Gifts of a kind. They may not be gold or beautiful. In fact some might be frightening or repulsive, holding a sting, their beauty only revealed when seen in new light.

Ruminating on this new perspective, the Moon goes on her way to meet Uranus. Sitting Opposite the God of Revolution, she is in for a shock. The conversation is tense. This is in direct contrast to the gentle time she’s had with Saturn, Neptune and Jupiter. With that conversation now in the past, their support and all hope of gentle dissolving of emotional dams is gone. She never feels at her best in Scorpio’s dark waters and needs reassurance, but Uranus is blunt. He makes it very clear that this is not time for a gentle change and release. It’s time to break free even if that means shocking others.

Change is difficult for most of us. This New Moon is pulling us to break free from that which holds us back. Throughout the month I’ve been writing about the need to let go. This New Moon makes the intention even more clear. It’s not about gently tweaking and changing. It’s about an inner revolution that pushes us to be free to be what we are meant to be. In other words, it’s time for transformation.

When Mercury goes stationary and then Retrograde, it is a time for reflection; a time to review and take stock. We need these opportunities in order to check ourselves and ensure that we are going in the right direction. So the question is, what do we need to review during this retrograde? You will have noticed in the sub-heading that in this Retrograde period, Mercury begins in Sagittarius and then heads back into Scorpio before stopping and turning direct. This means that there is some unfinished business of a Scorpio nature.

Sagittarius is a sign of hope, freedom and laughter. It invites us to ask un-answerable questions like, “why are we here?” With the Sun and now Venus currently in serious, sensitive Scorpio, Sagittarius is a discordant note. Despite Mars entry into Sagittarius, there is still much work of a deeply emotional nature to be done. This is not unusual in Astrology. All charts show contradictions but as Mercury turns Retrograde, there is a suggestion that the timing for something isn’t quite right. Perhaps you got excited about a new project or about some changes that you’ve been wanting to make for a while. You move forward, take action and suddenly realise that either you or someone else isn’t ready. Perhaps you are reconsidering your decisions.

Frustrating though this might feel, there is merit in stopping and reconsidering. Mercury’s return into Scorpio suggests that there is something buried that is standing in the way of progress. Issues around power or powerlessness, grief, or old grievances need to be addressed now. Maybe there is new information that comes to light or maybe you realise you haven’t quite let go of past pain. Past life echoes could also still be rippling through your subconscious stopping you from moving forward. Whatever the situation, this is a time for a deep cleanse. Allow the emotions to flow, be honest about what you feel, clear the air. This time of year is known for Gale Winds. These are the winds that help trees shed their leaves, clearing the way for buds to burst in the spring.

Once you have allowed for a cleansing, allowing whatever is holding you back to go, you will feel renewed and full of hope once more.

Taurus is a sign of spring. It’s light hearted, enjoying the sensual pleasures of life and delighting in the natural world. The Moon, is about nurturing. She is very much at home in Taurus. The Sun, however is in a dark mood. In Scorpio, his strength is waning fast. He is reminding us all that a cycle is coming to an end. In Taurus, the Moon is unwilling to let go. She reminisces and feels nostalgic for the happy times, her mood dips as she is reminded that all things come to an end. Then she perks up. She starts to plan for next spring.

The tension inherent in this Full Moon lies in the desire to avoid change. This is a season of drawing energy into the Earth. We need to slow down, rest, light candles, ground in nature and the present moment. All Soul’s Night has just passed reminding us of the fact that everything dies. Death is a form of change, transformation, the beginning of a new way of being. It is the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one.

The energy of this Moon is best dealt with by being gentle. We need to allow ourselves to mourn what we have lost. We need to be honest about the rage and pain that we feel so that we can be renewed. This is the cleansing needed, to generate the peace that will form the foundation for the birth of something new.

Balancing is a delicate matter. We need to weigh opposing views, ideas that feel disjointed, and somehow create a harmonious cohesion. Libra’s aim is to create harmony by balancing often disparate needs or perspectives. This can feel like an impossible task, especially if fear of rejection is strong. The balance can then tip into appeasement and people pleasing. All hope of equity and balance totally disappear.

This New Moon continues with the themes of balance and equity that we first saw at the Equinox. The Sun and Moon have tried to keep cool heads whilst in dialogue with an emotional Jupiter in Cancer, but instead found that their own feelings were amplified. They feel out of sorts, as though something isn’t sitting quite right. They can’t put their finger on the issue but it’s disconcerting. Somehow they feel more frustrated than ever. They feel let down.

Actually, whilst in dialogue with Jupiter, they were also sitting opposite Chiron in Aries. The answer to their discomfort lies in old wounds around rejection. This is why Jupiter’s talk about home, children, family and nostalgia has left them feeling uncomfortable. Their efforts to be logical have failed and instead, they are feeling moody.

The Moon is feeling especially sensitive as home, family and memories are exactly her domain, her territory. As she parts from the Sun, she is about to speak with Pluto. She knows some hard truths are looming as he is likely to prod and will not spare her feelings in his determination to get to the truth.

This New Moon asks us to weigh up our need for acceptance with the need for honesty and integrity. It also raises issues around expectations. Have we been let down, or were we unrealistic or unreasonable in our expectations? Difficulty with these issues means that there are old wounds around childhood and family needing healing. As the Moon enters Scorpio and approaches a Square to Pluto, digging deep will help us find the root of the imbalance. This is an intense period, so remember to allow time for reflection and for tears to flow. This is a moment to release pain and learn to let go of the past for renewal and balance to emerge.

This is a powerful Full Moon as it is focused on the signs of the Equinox. There are themes which remind us of the last New Moon in Libra. The Sun, in Venus’s sign is seeking partnership, collaboration and diplomacy. However his energy is waning as the days get shorter and we experience greater periods of darkness.

Longer nights invite us to draw inward. This is a reflective part of year. Mars and Mercury in Scorpio are pushing for introspection. Yet neither the Sun, nor Moon are ready for this. The Moon in fiery Aries wants action, not reflection. The Sun still has warmth and light to shine.

Both the Sun and Moon are heading for a tense dialogue with Jupiter. He is in bright spirits, exalted in Cancer. He’s feeling sensitive, and focused on matters close to the heart… feelings, home and family. This is usually the Moon’s domain so she recognises his frame of mind, but in Aries, Mars’ sign, she is feisty and ready to fight. What is she fighting for?

In Aries, the Moon is interested in self expression and truth. Conflict doesn’t worry her, and seems that Jupiter’s focus may be inspiring her. Matters of hearth, home, women and children are never far from her mind. Perhaps it’s not an argument with Jupiter that she seeks, but his presence in Cancer is inflaming indignation over injustices to all she holds dear. He’s expanding her sensitivity to abuse of what she loves. The Sun in cool Libra is attempting to calm things down. His language may be conciliatory, but his is the only cool head. In Fire and Water respectively, the Moon and Jupiter are both being led by intense emotions and feelings. Neither is in the mood to compromise. From their point of view, sometimes we have to hold the line. Sometimes, compromise is tantamount to capitulation. Mars and Mercury are also feeling emotional. It will be a while before the tone becomes more practical and conciliatory.

In the meantime, we need to take a hint from the season. It is time to draw inwards and consider our more angry impulses. If we can recognise them and honour the hurt we might be feeling, we lay the path open for healing. The Sun’s warmth and light can still illuminate the pain hiding in shadows. This is the compromise we need, honouring the shadow leads enables us to express ourselves with greater integrity.

Every year, as the Sun enters the sign of Libra we welcome the season of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. We experience a drop in temperatures and know that from now on days will become shorter than nights, as we head for the Winter Solstice. Yet despite this decline and apparent weakening of the Sun’s influence, we have a way to go before the next season. Everything is still green and days and nights are for now, of equal length. In other words, they are balanced.

Balance then is the key word for the first Sign of Autumn, Libra. The challenge will be to achieve and maintain it. Other words we might use are equity and equilibrium. All denote different aspects of the sign of the Scales. Inherent in the concept of balance, is relationship. There need to be two sides on the seesaw. Opposition and polarity are also inherent in this concept. So what does the chart set for this Equinox suggest might need balancing?

The Sun sits close to Mercury and the Moon who are also seeking balance in the sign of Libra. This is encouraging as it shows an intention to harmonise. Libra’s desire for harmony, means a deep desire to engage, listen attentively and understand. Often there is a willingness to collaborate, cooperate and compromise where necessary. Negotiation is also part of the engagement. Cool heads are needed for negotiation.

However, sitting exactly opposite the Sun, is Neptune in the sign of Aries. This makes it far more difficult to keep a cool head. Neptune is about dreams and idealisation. He also confuses. As the Sun attempts to build bridges, Neptune is likely to dissolve them. In Aries he is focused on assertion, individuality and personal strength. Compromise is for others. We may lament the uncooperative mood in which we find the god of the sea, but he does have a point. Libra can confuse compromise with capitulation and appeasement, thereby failing to realise its intention to be balanced and find equity between different people. This opposition invites us to consider very carefully what it means to be balanced. The idealisation of self can lead to selfishness, conflict and aggression. The idealisation of peace can mean disingenuous appeasement, suppression of anger and passive aggressive behaviour or resentments. None of which bring real peace.

This then is the challenge. We need to be clear and honest in our intentions and our interactions. Then we need to work hard to understand those around us. Negotiation means some compromise but the outcome must be fair to all. To help us, we also have Pluto in Aquarius and Uranus in Gemini. Both are supporting the Sun. Pluto intensifies communications and in a fixed sign means that there is strength and power in chosen words. Uranus brings a sense of freedom to the words chosen. Their strength lies in their integrity and neither is interested in placating.

We enter this Autumn with a remit, be truthful to yourself, stand your ground but do so sensitively and mindful of others’ sensibilities. In dong so you will avoid conflict and create the equilibrium that comes with respecting others, as well as yourself. Here is true equity.

This New Moon is special. It is the second in Virgo but only just. This is also an Eclipse New Moon, extra powerful and pointing to themes relevant in the coming months. At 29 degrees she is poising herself to move into Libra. However, before doing so there is some unfinished business. Sitting with the Sun, they have just left a tense conversation with Saturn in Pisces. He too has unfinished business and is Retrograde, revisiting matters that have been on his mind for the last two and a half years. He will continue to ponder and work on these until February next year. Saturn is about boundaries. Pisces has none. Saturn in this watery sign tries to build a dam to contain the sea. This can only work for a while. To what extent do we try to suppress feelings and avoid reality? These are some of the questions, we need to ponder in these last months of Saturn in Pisces. This is relevant at a personal level but Saturn is also about Government so these questions are salient if Government’s are disconnected from the feelings of the people.

The Sun and Moon in Virgo are about practicalities. Work, self-care and health. The harvest of what we have sown. In an Earth sign, they too might struggle with feelings, but here, practicality might suggest working with the energy instead of suppressing it. This is not Saturn’s way. He finds it difficult to go with the flow. He believes he has a grip on reality but in Pisces, his vision is foggy and he cannot see that he is alone in trying to hold back the tide.
