Top 50 Farmers was born from a simple, but powerful question: What would happen if farmers were recognized on par with the world’s most famous chefs?

How might that change the food system?

4 years later, Top 50 Farmers has grown far beyond what I could have imagined.

Together with an extraordinary team and community, we built a platform celebrating farmers and connecting people, ideas, resources and relationships around the power of regeneration.

I am so proud of what we created and deeply grateful for the farmers, partners, colleagues, funders and friends who have been part of this journey.

At the end of August, I’ll step down from my operational role as Communication and Ecosystem Director.

The organization will continue to grow under the leadership of my Co-Founder Cindie Christiansen and the wonderful team around her.

As for me, I’m stepping into a new chapter of my own.

I will continue my work as an executive coach, public speaker and host of the Future Food podcast.

I also intend to expand my work as an ecosystem developer bringing together people, ideas, capital, and organizations to move the food system forward, unlock innovation, and create meaningful collaborations.

I’m also open to new collaborations and interested in working with investors, philanthropists, organizations, clusters and leaders working toward a better future for food and agriculture.

Founded in 1874, Chautauqua runs a summer program focused on four main ideas: the arts, education, religion, and recreation.

It swells to a population of around 8,000 people during the season and the daily program teems with life and opportunity.

Thanks to the generosity of friends, I had the pleasure of attending the Future of Food week which had a special focus on climate, technology, and the next agricultural revolution.

It was great to hear many familiar thought leaders like Danielle Nierenberg, Anna Lappé, and Michael Grunwald (featured above) speak. My favorite talk came from someone new to me - Norman Wirzba.

Raised on a farm in Southern Alberta, Norman studied history at the University of Lethbridge, theology at Yale University Divinity School, and philosophy at Loyola University Chicago. Today, he is a Distinguished Professor at the Kenan Institute of Ethics at Duke University.

He gave a stirring speech on how to eat is to live and one of the most powerful acts of human existence. I bought his book on Food & Faith: A Theology of Eating, which I can’t wait to read!

Exploring how faith traditions inform and influence food is a new angle of learning for me and one I have never covered on the Future Food podcast (is that a spoiler?! MAYBE)

When I started studying the principles of regeneration, the first thing I learned in my certification program was that food is our connection to all that is (some would call that the divine).

An essential ingredient to healing the separation we feel from nature is spirituality. Growing food is an act of creation! There’s a reason every religious book is filled with food related metaphors. If there is no food, there is no us.

I won’t go down the rabbit hole any further right now, but I am excited to follow this thread more deeply!

Otherwise, the talks centered on the challenges and opportunities of food. Much of which I had heard before, but it was interesting to see new folks receive the information and stats we so often quote to one another (i.e. 1/3 of all food is lost and wasted; food contributes to 30% of climate emissions, etc).

For the audience, it was their first time hearing about the power of food’s influence and how big of a contributor it is to climate.

When you work in the space it’s easy to feel like everyone is thinking about this, but the reality is that we can do a lot more educating and evangelizing about the power of food to create change, restore the climate, and ensure food security. After all, it’s the most delicious way to effect change! It invigorated my desire to do even more public speaking that brings folks to the table.

But the week wasn’t all about work.

I also took a course on how to be a hollywood costume designer (I love learning about things that have nothing to do with my niche), read 3 books, spent lots of time being outside and napping.

What struck me the most about Chautauqua was how it enabled a quality of life that felt like college meets world’s best summer camp.

Cars are restricted.

Everyone moves by foot or bike.

Within 5 min of walking, you can attend world class opera, theater, poetry, classes, music, and more.

Every faith denomination has a house of representation.

And the institute serves as an incubator commissioning new works and providing grants for up and coming artists.

It was a marvel to experience.

Imagine if more communities were constructed like this.

PS: In June, I hosted a 10-day virtual summit called ROOTED about the importance of defining and acting by your values as a leader! The FIRST street we went down was ROOT. I got so excited I had to take a picture.

PPS: It does not go beyond me that I spent my “vacation” at what was essentially a week long conference on the future of food. What can I say, I am passionate about the space! 😂

This was the hypothesis of Adventure Day.

In early August, I gathered ten of my current and former coaching clients at Mossagården, an incredible regenerative farm in Southern Sweden,

One flew in from Portugal.
Another drove three hours from Gothenburg.
A caravan of us came from Copenhagen.

Between us, we represented eight nationalities and many different corners of the food system: biotech, precision fermentation, hospitality, investing, upcycling, consumer brands, research, nutrition, and more.

This diversity was intentional.

Most of us spend our days deeply focused on what we’re building or leading.

We rarely make time to step outside our immediate world and build relationships with people working elsewhere in the food system.

But why is this?

We know diversity is powerful.

We know innovation happens at the edges.

So why not create more space for those edges to meet?

What if instead of gathering in a conference room over stale coffee we went somewhere inspiring?

What if we visited others doing extraordinary work that we could learn from and be inspired by?

What if we connected over delicious food?

How would that change the quality of our connections?

What business opportunities and partnerships would that open up?

This is what I wanted to test with Adventure Day.

My clients already have me and a desire to create change through food in common.

An incredible shared experience was a cherry on top.

We enjoyed fika.

Walked beneath 500-year-old oak trees.

Learned about hemp, its 50,000+ uses ,and why it’s one of the most bullied plants in the world.

We also talked.

Around the table, in the woods, in a circle, in the grass.

Conversations flowed.
Ideas were exchanged.
Introductions were made.
Seeds of collaboration were planted.

The silos that typically separate us melted away.

A level of trust and ease emerged.

You could feel it in the belly laughs, the generosity of the conversations, and the way people wanted to help each other.

By the end of the day, everyone had gained an insight, connection, resource, introduction, or perspective to move their work forward.

And it affirmed something I believe deeply:

Who and what you surround yourself with matters.

It’s so important for us to broaden our horizons.

It’s so important for us to collaborate.

It’s so important for us to seek mutual thriving.

The future of food will not be built by one person or organization.

It’s going to take all of us.

Which is why it’s critical for us to come together.

The first Adventure Day was such a success that I want to host more of these.

In June, I facilitated the Boston–Ghana US Trade & Investment Summit.

The Ghana vs. England World Cup game had already brought leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, and changemakers to Boston, and the summit built on that momentum exploring partnerships and opportunities for deeper collaboration between the two countries.

As the host, part of my job was to facilitate high-level matchmaking.

And it was magic.

We opened up roundtables to tap into the wisdom in the room, and from the stage, I could practically see new partnerships and business opportunities sprouting in real time.

But something else happened that day.

I learned a LOT about Ghana.

I’ve traveled to 45 countries, but very little of Africa, and going into the summit, I knew relatively little about Ghana.

I walked away with one overwhelming realization:

There is so. much. opportunity.

Ghana is rich in talent, natural resources, entrepreneurial energy, agricultural potential, and people building really interesting things.

It’s in a convenient time zone for doing business with the U.S. and Europe (they are just 4 hours ahead of NYC!). English is the official language. And there is enormous potential across food, agriculture, trade, investment, and innovation.

But again and again, I heard the same underlying challenge:

People simply don’t know what’s there.

Even members of the Ghanaian diaspora in the room were surprised to hear about some of what was unfolding in their home country and immediately wanted to know how they could get involved.

Sitting on stage listening to all of this, my spidey senses started tingling.

And I had an idea:

What if I started hosting ecosystem tours to food innovation hotspots around the world?

Not your typical business trip.

And definitely not another conference where you fly halfway around the world just to spend three days inside an air-conditioned hotel.

I’m imagining small groups of fascinating people traveling somewhere beautiful and a little unexpected.

We’d eat incredible food.

Meet the founders, investors, chefs, innovators, farmers, and local leaders shaping that place.

Get behind-the-scenes access to ideas and businesses you probably wouldn’t discover on your own.

Have once-in-a-lifetime experiences in nature.

Laugh a lot.

And come home with new ideas, valuable relationships, and a much deeper understanding of another part of the world.

It’s also possible to take it another step further.

I could carefully curating the trip pulling on my skills as a business matchmaker to ensure that everyone on the trip is connected to other participants or sights that hold high value for them and their business.

Growing up, musical theater shaped so much of who I am. It gave me joy, lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deep appreciation for what happens when people come together to create something extraordinary.

As I got older, I wanted to do more than attend shows.

I wanted to help bring them to life.

So a photo of a Broadway stage has lived on my vision board for years.

And let me tell you, I didn’t just have a VISION.

I had a VERY convincing story about how it was supposed to happen.

I told myself that Broadway investing was only for the ultra-wealthy.

I pictured myself as an 85 years old matriarch becoming a patron of the arts after a lifetime of building wealth.

I imagined I’d need around $200,000 to give away with no expectation of return.

Y’all I could not have been more wrong!!!

Today, roughly 50 years ahead of schedule—I became a producer of SINATRA.

Before I tell you how that happened, I need to tell you why I find this story hilarious.

It is very much a taste of my own medicine.

One of the first things I do with coaching clients is help them create a personal vision.
We remove the expectations, need, and wants of others to discover what you really, really want.

Once we do this, clients typically get VERY EXCITED.

They create a vision that is so juicy, so them, and so potent that they typically want it NOW.

This is very normal.

When you can see the life you’re meant to build.

You do exactly what I did.

You become obsessed with the how.

How much money will it take?

How long will it take?

What do I need to do first?

What’s the “right” path?

You want control and certainty that it’s happening for you.

But this isn’t how miracles happen.

By zooming in on the HOW we put unnecessary constraints on the magic of our lives.

Because the truth is, there are millions of ways to get from where you are today to the life you dream about.

But our minds often see the most linear path, which is constrained by the information and resources we know we have now.

Case and point of me making up a story that I had to be 85 and have $200,000 to be a Broadway producer. I was CONVINCED this was the only way this could go down.

Until, I went to a networking event a few weeks ago and shared my dream out loud.

I even told a random woman my elaborate story about becoming an 85-year-old Broadway producer.

She started laughing.

Then she said, “You know... I’m a Broadway producer.”

She explained that productions can be financed through fractional investment groups, much like angel investment syndicates.

AND there actually an opportunity available to invest in a West End production now.

AND the investment was a fraction of what I had imagined.

AND suddenly, the story I’d been telling myself for years completely fell apart.

Not because my dream changed.

Because my world expanded.

Let my story be proof that your dreams may be much closer than you think.

I truly believe the desires on our hearts aren’t random.

They’re invitations.

It takes courage to admit what you really want.

To write it down.

To create a vision and let go of how it will happen.

What a blessing that the world came to us!

Instead of going to Europe this summer, I decided to stay home.

That was a seriously good decision. It was like my intuition knew it was going to be an epic month. Without meaning to, I booked a sublet in NYC that corresponded with the exact start and end dates of the World Cup.

You can’t make this stuff up!

And while I choose not to travel, I FEEL like I got to do a world tour all from the comfort of home.

NYC hosted fans from all over the world.

Every team had bars and restaurants serving the nation’s cuisine, playing their music, and giving a taste of their culture.

Journeying to these places to watch the game felt like getting on a plane to. I watched the game from Brazil, Senegal, Spain, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Paraguay, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Scotland, Germany, Ghana, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, The Netherlands and more.

An absolute portal.

Football was constantly on in the background of our lives.

In every bar, restaurant, street corner, and on the phone of the guy sitting next to you.

It was an instant connector.

Wearing a jersey welcomed conversation from like minded supporters and other fans sparking random conversations on city blocks, subways, and sidewalks.

Together, we competed and celebrated in unity.

We had fun. We sang. We danced.

I felt how this sport transcends all barriers of communication.

I felt the hopes, dreams, and fears cast upon the players giving it all for their nations.

I felt the heartbreak of not moving forward.

And it all left me wanting more.

Reflecting on why, I can see that it’s because the spirit of the World Cup embodies so many of my core values.

While there are flaws, the overwhelming experience is GLOBAL, JOYFUL, DEEPLY HUMAN, DIVERSE, and full of TOGETHERNESS.

This flooded our lives and brought us together as one big community.

This month I’ve been running the Values Reset supporting 15 leaders on defining the 4 core values that guide them. I’ve also been refreshing my values so all of this is very top of mind.

This World Cup along with the Knicks victory in NYC has been such an embodied experience of what’s possible showing how much harmony is already present.

We just need to chose it.

It left me wondering, what if every day could feel like World Cup season?

What would be possible from this place?

There’s more space to breathe.

More long walks, dinners outside, time with family, friends, play, joy, and abundance.

I love this season because it reminds me that growth doesn’t only happen only when we’re doing.

Some of our greatest breakthroughs happen in rest.

In stillness.

When we finally have enough quiet to hear ourselves.

This is a beautiful time to come back to yourself and ask:

What do I want?

One of the conversations that stayed with me most was around how our values may remain remarkably consistent throughout our lives, yet the way we define them and the way they show up can evolve dramatically over time.

In our life, we get to keep pulling back the layers of the onion to get to the core of who we are and what it means to show up as our true selves. Our values are a compass for getting there.

One of my core values is community and if I’m honest, it’s also one of the values that has felt the most undernourished as of late. It’s one I constantly crave more of.

Last year, I spent six months traveling through Europe searching for a place that would feel like home. What I realized was that I wasn’t actually searching for a place.

I was searching for a quality of relationship.

A place where I could be fully myself.

Where there was no performance.

No proving.

Just a deep sense of being seen, known, loved, and having each other’s backs.

As I’ve gotten older, that has felt harder to find.

Which is why what unfolded through ROOTED surprised me.

It quickly emerged as an ecosystem of people from different countries, industries, and chapters of my life finding one another through a shared commitment to living in alignment with their values.

The results have also been amazing.

Folks have been sending me incredible thank you messages and testimonials around how they are taking aligned action to be more themselves. It’s beautiful to see.

Somewhere during ROOTED, I realized that perhaps the invitation isn’t to wait for more of what we value to arrive. I’ve certainly spent a lot of time praying and awaiting for community to come TO me vs actively creating it.

The invitation is to be the embodiment.

This week, New York reflected that lesson back to me.

Last Saturday, the Knicks won the NBA Championship after a 53 year drought and the city has been electric.

The streets filled with celebration as people from every background came together in a moment of shared joy.

For all of us, it was a vision of what could be possible. There’s been so much great commentary around the phenomenon we’re witnessing:

When it comes to living my values, I know I need to show up as the community I wish to attract AND I know it’s easier to live my values when I’m surrounded by people who want what I want.

That feeling of joy continues.

ROOTED has produced many relationships. The World Cup is bringing all nations together. We are having a New York summer fully present where we are vs seeking to be somewhere else.

Summer is a great season to pause, rest, and reset.

I know I’ll be using the time to get clearer on my values and how they support me in building this next chapter.

Now that I’ve seen what’s possible, I can’t go back.

Community is worth fighting for.

This invitation feels meaningful because it brings my professional journey full circle.

My very first job was at the Embassy of the United States in Copenhagen, working with the U.S. Commercial Service. I supported American companies looking to expand into Denmark by organizing events, facilitating introductions, arranging meetings, and helping build relationships that could support market entry.

Tomorrow, ROOTED begins.

As I sit here writing this, I feel both overjoyed and overwhelmed.

More than 100 people have said yes to being part of this experience, and my heart is so full of excitement and hope for what is about to unfold.

For me, this topic is deeply personal.

The last few years have been challenging. I know you’ve felt it too.

We’ve watched institutions we once trusted begin to unravel while technology accelerates faster than many of us can keep up. I’ve sat at uncomfortable tables with folks who don’t share my perceived values wondering how to bridge the gap and how we moved so far from one another. And when I look at the headlines and those in positions of great power, I find myself questioning how we got here.

And yet, at the very same time, I see extraordinary work happening closer to home. I see people choosing integrity over convenience. I see communities caring for one another. I see leaders asking difficult questions about how to live in alignment with what matters most.

That tension is what inspired ROOTED.

I wanted to create a space where we could come together in conversation and explore how our values shape our lives, our leadership, our relationships, and ultimately the future we are creating.

More than anything, I feel hopeful.

I am beyond amazed by the response to ROOTED.

This feels deeply hopeful.

ROOTED was never meant to be a passive event where a few people speak and everyone else listens.

It is designed as an exploration and living conversation of how our values shape the way we lead, build, relate, create, and make decisions.

While each day will feature fireside conversations with inspiring thinkers, builders, and leaders, the heart of ROOTED is also the community gathering around these ideas.

That’s why I’m especially excited about the Values Labs. Community sessions where you become part of the conversation itself.

The Values Labs are designed to help you move beyond inspiration into integration creating space for you to reflect on what you are learning, connect with others, and explore how your values show up in your real life and leadership.

Throughout the Labs, I’ll be facilitating conversations, reflections, and live coaching around how your values influence the way you navigate leadership, business, relationships, purpose, and change.

I’ve also been receiving a few questions that I wanted to answer for everyone below.

I’m interested, but I can’t join every session! Is that okay?

ROOTED is designed as a 10-day experience and while you’ll get the most out of it by engaging deeply and participating throughout, we also know that life happens.

You are not expected to do it perfectly. If there’s one conversation, one Values Lab, or one exercise that especially speaks to you start there. Trust what you feel called toward. You are welcome in whatever way you’re able to show up.

What if I can’t join live?

That’s completely okay. Replays will be available each day, and you’ll have access to all recordings until June 26, 2026. We hope you will join a few live sessions to lend your voice and spirit to the conversation.

Recently, I went to a dinner.

My seat mate politely asked what I did for work as we introduced ourselves.

I went on to describe my passion for leadership and food system transformation.

She listened intently, then paused, and point blank told me “I don’t think we share the same politics.”

She turned her chair (and her back on me) and did not speak to me for the rest of the night. I was left isolated in a corner wondering “How did I get here? I was just being me?” It made me feel like I was back in high school.

When our values don't align, it can lead to tension, anger, upset, isolation, and sometimes the end of relationships all together.

This is true within our families, communities, and workplaces.

That’s why for the grand finale of ROOTED we are going to go there and explore the question:

About Lisa Blankenship

After coming out as gay, Lisa Blankenship experienced rejection from the very community she had spent years trying to belong to. The people she once felt closest to turned away from her because they believed their values no longer aligned with hers.

That experience became the catalyst for her life’s work: understanding how we cross divides and find peace with people who see the world differently from us.

Through both personal exploration and academic research, Lisa has dedicated her career to studying empathy, rhetoric, and the ways communication shapes connection and conflict. She is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she earned her PhD in English with a specialization in rhetoric and composition.

In 2014, Lisa moved from Cincinnati to New York to begin her role as Professor of English at Baruch College. She directed the writing program at Baruch for ten years, their Center for Teaching and Learning for one year, and currently serves as faculty director for the Edmond J. Safra Visiting Faculty program, bringing to campus leaders in government, business, and the academy to foster ethics-centered values in our often cynical, achieve-at-all-costs culture.

She has authored and co-edited four books: Changing the Subject: A Theory of Rhetorical Empathy (2019), The Rhetoric of Participation (2019), Empathy and the Other (2026), and Enacting Empathy (2026).
