No matter when your school year begins, a fresh start brings renewed excitement, new goals, and plenty of possibilities. It’s easy to get caught up in buying curriculum and organizing supplies, some of the most meaningful back-to-school traditions have little to do with schoolwork.

Some years, we have completely transformed our learning space at the start of the new school year. In other years, we’ve simply sharpened our pencils, visited the library, and headed outside for our first “nature walk.” This year, I found a massive roll-top desk in my local “buy nothing” group. We’re going for old school studious vibes this year.

There definitely isn’t one “right” way to begin a homeschool year.

Whether you’re homeschooling for the very first time or preparing for your tenth year, I hope these ideas inspire you to create a homeschool that brings joy to your family. 1. Build a Morning Basket

A morning basket is one of the easiest ways to bring everyone together before diving into individual lessons. It can also give you a few minutes in the morning to drink your coffee, wash your face, or handle last-minute prep. Ours often includes a read-aloud, a sticker book, a nature book, or a fun nonfiction title. Starting the day together helps us ease into learning instead of jumping straight into worksheets. I also keep basic art supplies on hand for when the artistic urge strikes.

2. Refresh Your School Supplies

4. Organize Your Curriculum And Supplies In a Way That Makes You Happy

5. Design a Cozy Reading Corner

Every homeschool benefits from a comfortable place to read. Add a soft blanket, a floor pillow, a small bookshelf, or a cozy chair. We have a beanbag filled with stuffies of the past. Children are much more likely to pick up a book when they have an inviting space to enjoy it.

6. Choose a Family Read-Aloud

One of my favorite homeschool traditions is beginning the year with a great family read-aloud. Shared stories often become some of the strongest memories of the school year.

8. Create an On-The-Go Nature Bag

Grab a tote and add things like binoculars, magnifying glasses, field guides, bug containers, clipboards, and nature journals and leave it by the door. You’ll be surprised how often it gets used.

9. Start a Nature Journal

I mentioned this above, but it has truly been one of our favorite things. What started as a study of local plants, has turned into a yearly ritual. Encourage children to sketch leaves, flowers, insects, birds, weather patterns, or interesting discoveries throughout the year. We also tape samples of local plants or photos taken during our hikes. It’s amazing to look back and see how their observations improve over time.

10. Set Up a Geography Station

Display a globe, a wall map, an atlas, and a few interesting geography books so everyone can easily explore them. Children naturally become curious when these resources are visible. I remember learning all of my states as a kid, just because we had a shower curtain of the United States!

11. Create a Family Calendar

Include lesson plans, library days, field trips, extracurricular activities, birthdays, and important deadlines all in one place. It helps everyone know what to expect each week.

12. Prepare an Art Station

13. Organize Science Supplies

15. Create a “Fast Finish” Basket

Keep educational games, puzzle books, drawing prompts, brain teasers, and logic puzzles ready for children who finish assignments early. Perfect for when you are doing lessons with multiple children. This can be similar to a morning basket, but with more fun activities to encourage assignment completion.

16. Choose An Educational Game for Family Night

Board games teach far more than many people realize. Strategy, math, reading, geography, teamwork, and problem-solving can all happen around the game table. 17. Build a Reference Library

Keep atlases, encyclopedias, dictionaries, history books, science references, and field guides together in one location. These become invaluable resources throughout the year. These books have been some of my favorite things to collect.

18. Start a Wonder Journal

Every time someone asks an interesting question, write it down instead of answering immediately. Choose one question each week to research together. This may have evolved from one of the many ADHD rabbit holes we have fallen down, but it has turned into a beautiful practice in a beautiful book.

19. Make a Homeschool Bucket List

Write down places you’d love to visit and experiences you’d like to have before the school year ends. Museums, national parks, historical sites, factories, nature preserves, and community events all make wonderful learning opportunities. Do not feel pressure to complete this list during the school year! Creating this list will help you learn more about your child’s interests and will include them in the planning process. 21. Create a Travel Learning Kit

Keep educational activities packed and ready for waiting rooms, road trips, sports practices, and long appointments. Learning doesn’t have to stay at home.

22. Prepare Rainy Day Activities

23. Organize Your Digital Resources

Bookmark favorite educational websites, YouTube channels, virtual museums, and printable resources before school begins. It saves time later when you’re looking for enrichment. Spending 20 minutes on this makes me feel like the Queen of Homeschool Organization as I kick off the school year.

24. Set Reading Goals

Rather than assigning a specific number of books, encourage children to explore several different genres, authors, or subjects throughout the year. Variety often creates lifelong readers. My kid has loved reading:

25. Build a Family Puzzle Table

29. Take First-Day Photos

These yearly snapshots become treasured memories, and shouldn’t just be for traditional school kids.

30. Start a Time Capsule

Invite everyone to write predictions for the coming year, list current favorites, and include small keepsakes. Open it together at the end of the school year. 31. Create a Family Tradition

32. Prepare for Hard Days

33. Remember to Take Care of Yourself

Homeschool parents spend so much time caring for everyone else that sometimes we forget ourselves. A comfortable workspace, a good planner, a favorite mug of coffee, or a quiet half hour before everyone wakes up (or after everyone goes to bed) can make a tremendous difference.

35. Celebrate Progress Instead of Perfection

It’s easy to compare our homeschool to beautifully organized classrooms or carefully curated social media photos. But homeschooling isn’t about creating perfect days; it’s about creating meaningful ones.

Some days you’ll complete every lesson exactly as planned. Other days you’ll spend an hour watching butterflies, building blanket forts, reading just one more chapter, or following a child’s fascinating question down an unexpected path. Those days count just as much.

At the end of the year, your children probably won’t remember whether you finished every worksheet on schedule. They’ll remember the books you read together, the places you explored, the conversations you had around the table, and the freedom to discover the world alongside someone who also loves learning.

There’s something about the first week of September that feels like a dividing line. Summer isn’t technically over, but routines are returning, school supplies are everywhere, and the days are beginning to feel just a little different.

Before we rush into fall, here are a few interesting things worth stopping to explore this week.

This Week in History

September 1, 1914
The last known passenger pigeon died.

Her name was Martha, and she lived at the Cincinnati Zoo. It’s difficult to imagine now, but passenger pigeons had once numbered in the billions in North America. Enormous migrating flocks could darken the sky as they passed overhead.

Hunting and habitat loss caused their numbers to collapse astonishingly quickly. When Martha died, an entire species disappeared with her. Today, she is preserved at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.

September 3, 1976
Viking 2 landed on Mars.

After traveling millions of miles through space, NASA’s Viking 2 spacecraft successfully touched down on Utopia Planitia, a broad plain on Mars.

Its cameras revealed a rocky landscape, while instruments studied the Martian soil and searched for signs of life. Together, Viking 1 and Viking 2 became the first completely successful missions to land on Mars and investigate its surface.

September 5, 1977
Voyager 1 began its incredible journey.

NASA launched Voyager 1 from Cape Canaveral to explore the outer solar system. It flew past Jupiter and Saturn, discovered previously unknown moons and a ring around Jupiter, and just kept going.

Today, Voyager 1 is still operating and is the most distant human-made object from Earth. It entered interstellar space in 2012, carrying its famous Golden Record with sounds and images chosen to represent life on our planet.

Old Maps Online

There is something fascinating about seeing a familiar place as it appeared hundreds of years ago.

Old Maps Online lets you search an enormous collection of digitized historical maps from libraries and archives around the world. Search for your hometown, another country, or somewhere you’re studying and see what maps of that place looked like at different points in history.

Try searching for your own town first. Then compare what you find with a modern map. What disappeared? What appeared? Which roads, rivers, or landmarks stayed the same?

Something Fascinating

Why Do We Have Fingerprints?

Look closely at the tips of your fingers. Those tiny loops, arches, and whorls began forming before you were born.

Fingerprints help increase friction between our fingers and the things we touch, which can improve our ability to grip and manipulate objects.

Even identical twins don’t have identical fingerprints.

Try this: Use a washable marker to color one fingertip, press it onto clear tape, and stick the tape onto white paper. Compare prints from everyone in your family.

A Little Something to Watch

Voyager Golden Record

Before Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 left Earth, scientists attached a gold-plated record to each spacecraft.

The records contain sounds and images from Earth intended to tell the story of our planet to anyone who might someday find them: greetings in dozens of languages, sounds from nature, music from around the world, and images explaining humans, animals, landscapes, science, and everyday life.

Then ask everyone:

If we made a Golden Record today, what five things would you put on it?

Get Outside

Go Out After Dark

Before the evenings get too chilly, take ten minutes this week and go outside after dark.

No organized activity required.

Look for the Moon. Find the brightest thing in the sky. Listen for animals you don’t hear during the day. Notice how different familiar places look when the sun is gone.

If you want to take it one step further, use a free stargazing app to identify one planet, star, or constellation.

Ten minutes counts!

Something to Think About

Passenger pigeons once existed in numbers almost impossible to imagine.

Voyager 1 is now traveling through a place almost impossible to imagine.

Both stories happened because of choices humans made.

One is a reminder of what we can lose.

The other is a reminder of how far our curiosity can take us.

Not a bad pair of things to think about as we begin a new school year.

Anchor & Explore

August 21, 1911
The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre. The painting disappeared for more than two years before authorities recovered it in Italy. The theft actually helped turn the painting into the worldwide icon it is today.

August 22, 1864
The first Geneva Convention was adopted, establishing international protections for wounded soldiers and the people caring for them during war.

August 23, 1966
NASA’s Lunar Orbiter 1 took the first photograph of Earth from the vicinity of the Moon. The picture wasn’t even part of the spacecraft’s original photography plan.

Turn on the street sounds, choose a radio station and watch the city go by.

Try letting your kids choose a city they’ve never visited and spend a few minutes noticing the buildings, traffic, signs, landscape and sounds. It’s a surprisingly fun way to experience another place.

NASA has built an interactive 3D version of our cosmic neighborhood that you can explore right in your browser.

With Eyes on the Solar System, you can move among planets and moons, follow spacecraft, watch past NASA missions unfold and even move backward and forward through time. NASA’s larger Eyes collection also lets you explore asteroids, Earth and exoplanets using real mission data and imagery.

One especially appropriate thing to try this week: find Voyager 2 and see just how far it has traveled since August 20, 1977.

Did You Know?

There are places on Earth where gravity is slightly stronger or weaker than it is elsewhere.

Earth isn’t a perfectly smooth, evenly distributed ball. Mountains, ocean trenches and differences in the density of rock beneath Earth’s surface all affect its gravitational field.

The difference is tiny… you won’t suddenly start floating. However, scientists can actually map these variations.

The Smithsonian has put millions of digital museum resources online, including photographs, artwork, recordings, historical documents, scientific specimens and videos from across its museums, research centers, libraries, archives and the National Zoo.

insects.

Then see where you end up.

We’re right in the middle of the “Dog Days of Summer,” a phrase that’s actually thousands of years old.

Ancient Greeks and Romans connected the hottest stretch of summer with Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, also known as the Dog Star. They believed its appearance alongside the sun added to the summer heat.

It doesn’t, of course, but I love that a phrase we still use today has been hanging around for more than 2,000 years.

One Last Amazing Fact

Long before dinosaurs walked the Earth, giant dragonflies ruled the skies.

Some prehistoric dragonflies had wingspans reaching nearly 2½ feet (75 cm) or about the size of a red-tailed hawk!

Thankfully, today’s dragonflies are much smaller... and much easier to share the outdoors with.

Summer has a funny way of speeding up. One minute you’re making plans, and the next you’re wondering how it’s already mid-July.

One thing I’ve learned as a homeschool mom is that learning doesn’t have to pause just because school does.

Some of our favorite discoveries have happened during the summer. A question at breakfast turns into an afternoon rabbit trail. A library book sparks a new interest. A simple walk outside becomes a science lesson without anyone realizing it.

When we finished History Quest: Early Times, I wondered if we would love the next level just as much.

We did.

In many ways, History Quest: Middle Times became even more engaging for our family. The stories become richer, the world expands, and the connections between cultures, inventions, trade, religion, and exploration start coming together.

One of the things I appreciate most about the History Quest series from Pandia Press is that history never feels dry or overwhelming. It feels approachable, story-driven, and deeply human. Instead of memorizing disconnected dates and facts. Readers begin understanding how civilizations influenced one another and how the world slowly became what it is today.

And as homeschool parents, I think many of us are looking for exactly that.

A curriculum that is academically strong while still preserving curiosity and connection.

If you are considering History Quest: Middle Times for your homeschool year, here is everything we have used, loved, and found helpful along the way.

Our Core History Quest: Middle Times Books

At the center of this curriculum are two main spines that work beautifully together.

1. History Quest: Middle Times

This is the heart of the curriculum and the book your student will spend the most time with throughout the year.

The writing style is conversational and engaging without talking down to children. The chapters are manageable, the illustrations keep things visually interesting, and the curriculum does an excellent job balancing world history in a way that feels broad without becoming overwhelming.

We especially appreciated how often the text encouraged discussion and deeper thinking naturally.

You can pair this with:

• the audiobook version for car rides or independent listening

• timeline activities

• map work

• notebooking pages

• hands-on projects

2. The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History with Internet Links

This encyclopedia ended up becoming one of our most-used homeschool resources overall, not just for history.

It adds visual context, timelines, maps, illustrations, and short explanations that help bring the History Quest lessons to life. My daughter constantly flipped through it outside of assigned reading just because she found it interesting.

It is a resources that will become part of your homeschool environment year after year.

Do You Need the Study Guide?

In my opinion, yes. 100% yes.

The History Quest: Middle Times Study Guide is what transforms the curriculum from simply reading history into a full homeschool experience.

The study guide includes:

• comprehension questions

• map work

• notebooking

• timeline activities

• hands-on projects

• discussion prompts

• literature integration

• activity suggestions

It gives structure without making the curriculum feel rigid. We often mix up the days in the suggested schedule, there is plenty of room to tailor the curriculum to your needs.

Our Favorite Part: Hygge History Weeks

The Hygge History concept is such a beautiful addition to this curriculum.

Instead of pushing through formal assignments every single week, there are built-in weeks designed around cozy, connection-focused literature experiences. The idea comes from the Danish concept of hygge: comfort, togetherness, warmth, and well-being.

These weeks ended up becoming some of our favorite homeschool memories.

We would make hot chocolate, pile onto the couch with blankets, and simply enjoy stories together. It reminded me that history is not only about facts and timelines. It is also about stories, imagination, culture, and shared human experiences.

Literature of the Middle East

For the Middle Eastern literature unit, you can choose from several beautiful retellings of Arabian Nights stories.

Some options include:

• The Arabian Nights retold by Wafa’ Tarnowska

• Tales from the Arabian Nights by Milo Winter

• One Thousand and One Arabian Nights retold by Geraldine McCaughrean

These stories add richness and atmosphere to the curriculum and create wonderful opportunities for discussion about storytelling traditions and culture.

Arthurian Literature

The Arthurian literature unit was such a huge shift in tone.

Knights, castles, quests, magic swords… this section pulled us in.

Some recommended options include:

• Knights of the Round Table by Gwen Gross

• Hudson Talbott’s Tales of King Arthur series:

  • King Arthur: The Sword in the Stone

  • King Arthur and the Round Table

  • Excalibur

  • Lancelot

This is also a really fun section to pair with:

• castle building activities

• medieval crafts

• documentaries

• themed movie nights

• dress-up play for younger siblings

Japanese Folktales

This unit felt especially peaceful.

We loved slowing down and exploring Japanese storytelling traditions through folktales and art. The recommended books are wonderful for read-aloud time and naturally spark conversations about culture and traditions.

Recommended options include:

• A Treasury of Japanese Folktales

• Japanese Children’s Favorite Stories

Pandia Press also recommends a family movie night featuring The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, which fits beautifully with this section of the curriculum.

Tales from Africa

The African folktale unit was another favorite in our home.

The Anansi stories especially brought so much laughter and energy into our homeschool days. They are playful, clever, and incredibly memorable for kids.

Recommended options include:

• Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock

• Anansi’s Party Time

This section pairs wonderfully with:

• storytelling activities

Supplies We Found Helpful

You do not need a massive list of supplies to make this curriculum special. Some simple items go a long way.

A few things we used constantly:

• colored pencils and markers

• watercolor paints

• a world map or atlas

• timeline supplies

• notebooks or binders

• printer paper and cardstock

• sticky notes and tabs

• audiobooks and headphones

• simple craft supplies

I also highly recommend having a cozy reading setup for the Hygge History weeks. Blankets, warm drinks, soft lighting, and comfortable seating somehow make those literature days feel extra memorable.

Why We Continue to Love History Quest: Middle Times

There are so many history programs available for homeschoolers, but History Quest continues to stand out for us because it feels both academically rich and genuinely enjoyable.

It respects children.
It encourages curiosity.
It leaves room for connection and conversation.

And perhaps most importantly, it helps history feel alive.

Not just a list of events to memorize, but the story of people, cultures, ideas, and civilizations across time. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have,

These aren’t required, but they made our homeschool much smoother.

A large United States wall map

A world map for placing historical events into global context

Blank United States outline maps for labeling and coloring

Art Supplies

History Quest includes optional projects throughout the year, so we kept a simple art basket nearby.

My daughter often used:

• Watercolors (for maps and History Hops)

• Watercolor paper (because she always wanted to keep painting after the History Hop)

• Colored pencils (for when we didn’t break out the paint)

• Crayons

• Washable markers

• Construction paper

• Glue tape

• Scissors

• Air-dry clay

• Paint brushes

Nothing fancy. Just basic supplies that were used for many projects.

Organization

We kept everything together using:

• A three-ring binder, or you “History Notebook”

• Dividers

• Sheet protectors

• Composition notebook

• Pencil pouch

Simple organization made it much easier to revisit projects later in the year.

My Thoughts After Completing the Curriculum

History Quest has become one of those homeschool purchases I recommend without hesitation.

I appreciate that it doesn’t feel like a dry textbook. Instead, it encourages curiosity, meaningful conversations, and a genuine interest in history.

The optional projects allow you to make the curriculum as hands-on as you’d like, and the Hygge History weeks create a wonderful rhythm that prevents burnout.

If your family enjoys learning through stories rather than memorization, I think you’ll love this curriculum as much as we have.

There are also a couple of simple challenges tucked inside for young explorers, including an outdoor photo hunt and a “would you rather” question that sparked quite a debate in our house.

In fact, I probably love planning more than I love actually following the plan.

My homeschool system is a combination of a paper planner and a spreadsheet. I write everything down by hand first, then transfer it to a digital version that I can share with my daughter and her dad.

But for homeschool families, summer can feel a little more complicated.

When your children are already home year-round, there is no dramatic shift into “summer mode.” No last day of school countdown. No huge routine change. Sometimes the days can start blending together, and before long, many homeschool parents find themselves wondering how to make summer actually feel different.

At the same time, whether your children attend public school or homeschool, there is always that little voice in the back of your mind warning about the dreaded summer slide. You know the one. The fear that kids will forget everything they learned by fall if they spend the summer swimming, building forts, and watching movies.

Personally, I think summer should still feel magical.

I want my daughter to remember slow mornings, popsicles dripping down sticky fingers, library trips, and staying outside until the sky turns pink. I want summer to feel lighter and freer than the rest of the year.

But I also know children thrive when curiosity stays alive.

The good news is that avoiding the summer slide does not mean recreating school at home. In fact, some of the best learning happens during the moments that barely look like learning at all.

Learning Looks Different in Summer

During the school year, learning often has structure and rhythm. There are lessons to complete, schedules to follow, and goals to meet. Summer gives us permission to loosen our grip a little.

Instead of formal academics, summer learning can become:

• reading in a hammock

• nature walks with a sketchbook

• baking and measuring ingredients together

• educational games after dinner

• audiobooks during road trips

• backyard science experiments

• gardening, hiking, or stargazing

Children absorb so much through play, conversation, exploration, and real-life experiences. Those lessons stick longer than worksheets do.

One thing that has worked well in our home is keeping learning tools casually available without forcing them. A basket of activity books near the couch. A fun workbook in the car. A science kit waiting for a hot afternoon. Card games on the kitchen table.

When there is no pressure attached, kids naturally stay engaged.

Summer Reading Without the Pressure

Reading is probably the easiest and most powerful way to avoid the summer slide, but I think we sometimes overcomplicate it.

Summer reading does not need logs, quizzes, and rewards charts.

It can simply look like creating an atmosphere where books are part of everyday life.

Some of our favorite summer reading moments happen completely organically. Reading together before bed with the windows open. Listening to audiobooks while drawing. Stopping at the library just because we are nearby. (Their summer reading program is a big deal in our house.)

The goal is not perfection. The goal is helping children associate reading with comfort, imagination, and enjoyment. Make it something they want to do, not something they have to do.

If you are taking a more methodical, academic approach to summer learning, try to incorporate simple learning resources and activities into summer naturally. Things like:

• summer reading workbooks

• educational card games

• travel-friendly activity books

• audiobook memberships (Get an Audible trail membership for the summer here.)

• reading lights and cozy reading accessories like this lap desk or this reading journal

Small additions can make learning feel exciting instead of mandatory.

Take Learning Outside

Summer has a way of making everything feel more memorable outdoors.

A bug catcher becomes a science lesson.
Sidewalk chalk turns into math practice.
Gardening becomes biology.
A beach trip becomes marine science.

Some of the best homeschool moments are the ones that happen while children are simply exploring the world around them.

Outdoor learning resources are some of my favorite summer tools because they encourage movement and exploration at the same time. We especially love things like:

• magnifying glasses and bug kits

• nature journals

• outdoor STEM toys

• gardening sets

• scavenger hunt cards

• water experiment kits

Children remember experiences. All of the above links lead to products we have loved in our homeschool.

Summer Is Also for Life Skills

One thing I appreciate about slower summer schedules is that they create space for teaching practical life skills that often get overlooked during busy school months.

Summer is such a good time for kids to learn things like:

• cooking simple meals

• budgeting spending money

• organizing their rooms

• helping plan grocery lists

• learning basic entrepreneurship

• practicing independence

These moments build confidence in ways traditional academics sometimes cannot. Kids usually enjoy these kinds of lessons - gaining responsibility is always exciting.

You Do Not Have to Entertain Kids Constantly

I think modern parents put so much pressure on themselves to create magical childhoods that we sometimes forget children do not need nonstop entertainment to have beautiful summers.

Some of the best summer memories come from boredom.

Slow afternoons.
Made-up games.
Blanket forts.
Sprinkler in the backyard.
Crafts made from leftover boxes and tape.

Children need room to wander, imagine, create, and even complain a little sometimes.

Not every moment needs to be productive to be valuable.

A Gentle Approach to Summer Learning

If there is one thing I have learned as a homeschool parent, it is this:

Learning does not stop just because formal lessons pause.

Don’t Worry… Be Happy

If you are worried about the summer slide this year, try taking a gentler approach. Read books together. Play games. Spend time outside. Keep a few interesting learning tools within reach. Follow your child’s interests.

Summer does not have to become “school at home” to still be meaningful.

Often times the learning that happens during slow summer days ends up being the kind children carry with them the longest.

A Time to Catch Up

Kids have minds like little sponges. With some focused learning, catching up to state “standards” can be done in no time. If you are concerned that your child is “behind,” first, give yourself grace. As the saying goes, “don’t judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree.”
