A few months ago, I asked you for stories about what made you who you are politically. My idea was a live storytelling series called All Sides of the Story, where people tell PERSONAL stories on a theme, from all sides of the political spectrum. I got a range of responses including some fierce pushback about creating shows like this at all. “Why give people a platform?” “No one wants to hear stories about politics” “This could be dangerous.”

I thought: Wow, if people were reacting this strongly, maybe I was onto something. Also, the more I read the news and the more I encountered people with different points of view, the more I felt angry and frankly, sad. If anyone needs to understand all sides of the political story, it’s me. I also realized that to pull off shows like this, I needed support. So I partnered up with Matthew Anderson of Mosaic Miami. Their mission is huge and also simple: Connect diverse voices to build one Miami.

All Sides of the Story is ON.

Matt and I invite YOU—people from every background, generation, faith, culture, profession, and political persuasion to put your story in the ring to be considered for Red, Gray, and Blue, a live show exploring the moments that shape who we are politically.

Because, behind every political belief is a deeply personal story.

Eight participants will be selected. Together, we’ll develop our stories in workshops and share them in a live performance December 3, 2026.

Selected participants must commit to five in-person workshops, where we’ll write our stories together. We’ll give and receive feedback and support each other in creating honest, self-reflective stories. We’ll become one cast.

Because, I truly believe you can’t hate someone if you know their story.

To apply answer this question in one or two paragraphs: What situation or moment made you who you are politically?

Did the Cuban government confiscate your family’s business? Did you or anyone you love survive the Holocaust? Did you need an abortion and get denied? Tell us how that experience shaped you.

No writing or public speaking experience necessary. You must be in Miami to participate because I’m going back to what I love and what I think works best for creating connection—live and local storytelling.

A year and a half ago, I entered my first tennis tournament on the senior tour, which caters to players all over the world and into their 90s. I’m in the 55 and overs and I have to tell you, this ain’t your grandma’s tennis league. Or maybe this is exactly grandma’s tennis league. The competition is fierce.

I’ve played nine tournaments so far. I’ve won prize money (I’m a pro!) and I am now ranked #1 in Florida (my best ranking ever!). While I wouldn’t call tournaments fun exactly—a tennis match is physically and mentally grueling—and I’ve lost some matches I thought I could win (I’m a mental case!) competing is giving me something I didn’t know I needed.

I grew up playing tennis. I played softball and ran cross-country too, but tennis got me into the University of Pennsylvania. Now, 36 years after graduating, and after a 25-year break from tennis, I’m back on the court and loving it learning a lot.

One thing I’m learning is tennis lessons are writing lessons are life lessons. Lesson one: You have to hit a lot of balls.

A man would never say this, but in 1986, the Penn tennis team was just bad enough to want me. I say this because it’s true and because I’ve also learned that years of hard work can bring some very good luck.

I quit tennis after college because it didn’t feel good to play when I was out of shape or out of practice. I wasn’t what I was. Then ten years ago, Allison Langer, cofounder of Writing Class Radio, suggested tennis. Allison didn’t play in college and ex-college tennis players are total snobs, so I said no. But then I softened to the idea and soon we were holding work meetings from across the net. Tennis was fun again. Or actually, tennis was fun for the first time.

As a kid, I didn’t appreciate how lucky I was to be out there running around. I didn’t know I would have been a stress mess in the rest of my life if I didn’t exert myself on the court. I didn’t notice how good it felt to hit the ball just right. But now…the slide, the swing, and the feel of the ball off the strings feels a little bit like dancing.

In college, a friend gave me a birthday card with a school of blue fish swimming in one direction and one red fish swimming in the opposite direction.

I felt insecure in college. I went to Penn where fraternity formals dominated the social scene and where girls wore leggings. I never got invited to a formal and I never wore leggings. Everyone seemed so smart and I thought I was there just because I could play tennis.

I liked that my friend saw me as the red fish. I took it to mean, “You’re not like everyone else around here, but I love you anyway.” But now I’m thinking, hold on a second. Sure, wear your colors proudly, be yourself, forge your own path, think differently…all that. But maybe it’s also a good idea to join in sometimes.

I’m participating in a virtual writing workshop called Writing the Deeper Story. If you join now (it’s free) for the next 48 hours, you can hear me and 24 other writers gab about something aspect of writing. I’m talking about writing what you don’t want to write about.

One of my students asked me how I got to be a part of this workshop and I said it’s because I’ve been swimming with the blue fish for about 28 years now. In the beginning, I met the director of the conference, Karin Gutman, when I performed in a storytelling show she produced and we’ve been connected ever since.

I think of writing as a team sport. Sure, it’s up to each writer to put the words down, but she needs an editor, a writing group, and friends in the field.

Writing, like any sport, is a slow grind. You practice (write and write and write), you play (submit stories for publication, tell stories on stage), you take classes (Writing Class Radio). You keep your head in the game for years and slowly, slowly, you get better at craft. You learn to omit needless words and go to scene. Slowly, you get more comfortable putting your heart (the scary truth) in the story. Over time you get better at writing what you don’t want to write about but what you know the story needs. Slowly, you make connections with cool people and people get to know you. And soon you’ll get invited to gab about what you know about writing.

In the meantime, writing with others is so much fun!

On the first day of the World Cup, I saw an Instagram reel by Coach Jackie talking about how everyone is asking, “Why is the U.S. so bad a soccer?” But Jackie said, NO. The U.S. women’s soccer team won the World Cup in 1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019!

The U.S. is not bad at soccer. The men’s soccer team is bad, but not everyone else.

I’m so glad Coach Jackie cleared that up. But still, get this: My wife, Vicky, and I were watching a movie called Ladies First, where every day was opposite day. There was a church scene with a woman priest. I have to say first that Vicky grew up Catholic. The priest did the sign of the cross and said, “In the name of the mother, daughter, and the Holy Spirit.”

Vicky paused the movie. She stood up. She cheered.

Vicky had never heard the substitution of mother for father. She had never thought about what her priest, her congregation, her parents, or what she herself had been saying her whole life and for the thousands of years leading up to this moment in this movie that showed us how fathers, sons, and holy spirits are blessed, but not us.

Point of view matters. We’re talking about writing from different points of view at the Tips Clinic this Saturday and you’re invited. We have a special guest, Nancy Jorgensen, the author of the essay we’re going to study, published in Short Reads.

Allison Langer is leaving me/Writing Class Radio. At least I didn’t bury the lead. She’s going to law school. Maybe “Allison’s going to law school” is the lead, but since I’m writing this newsletter, I’ll make it about me.

I’m so impressed and happy for Allison, but I’m also sad as shit for me. Allison and I met 16 years ago, when she took her first writing class. Since, she’s gotten a million stories published, she’s become my editor, podcast co-host, co-teacher, co-producer, writing partner, work-wife, and one of my best friends.

She’s going to law school because she wants to make a difference in the criminal justice system, which I think is the most noble and coolest thing.

The other day, in a writing class we teach together at the University of Miami, Allison brought in this story. I’m posting it here because I want everyone I know to know what writing class means to her and to me. If this resonates, join me for a class this Saturday (tomorrow). Writing Class Broke Me Open

I met Andrea at a weak moment.

I was on the way home from the grocery store, still struggling to get through the day. An ad for her writing class came on Miami’s local public radio station. I wasn’t a writer, though I’d written about my failed two-year marriage ten years earlier. Back then, I’d asked my friend for edits. She’d said, “You need a writing class.”

Andrea’s class didn’t come at a good time. My photography season was ramping up, and a night class 25 minutes away made no sense. Night was when I edited photos. My three kids were asleep and the phone was silent. Still, after putting the groceries away, I opened my computer and signed up for the class.

Back in 2010, classes were in person. We met on the ground floor at Miami-Dade College. I was a little nervous, having been out of school for 20 years. I was early, as usual. Our teacher was late. Just as I was coming back from the bathroom, a curly-haired woman about my build (muscular and of average height and weight) ran into the building. “Where’s the writing room?”

I pointed to where 16 others were gathered and waiting. “Teacher’s not here yet,” I said with an eye roll.

“I’m the teacher,” she said bursting into the class apologizing. She arranged the seats in a circle and complained about traffic. Something about her tardiness made her seem vulnerable. I liked her immediately.

That day, Andrea gave the prompt Write about someone you love and said, “Go.” After ten minutes, each person shared their response. It felt weird to share but not too painful. I’d written about how much I loved my dog, Molly. The next class, the prompt was Write about your biggest regret. I regretted getting Molly spayed. For the next few classes, my answer to each prompt was Molly. Writing about Molly was how I kept the class and my pain separated.

The woman who sat in that classroom was so afraid of being exposed. She was fragile and scared someone would see how weak she was. She’d just had a baby boy six months earlier. She had two other children at home, 3 and 5. This woman had her babies alone, through anonymous sperm donation, because her perfect man had not appeared and she was strong enough to do it alone. But her interior was nowhere near as strong as the façade. Inside, she was suffering. Two years earlier, this woman lost her 16-month-old daughter, Maclain, to a congenital heart defect. And she didn’t want a bunch of strangers to know.

Looking back now, I’m not sure what I was hoping would happen in writing class; I just felt compelled to be there.

After Maclain died, my friend Desiree urged me to find a good therapist. “You can’t do this alone,” she’d said. Desiree had been my best friend in high school and we were 42 going on perfect. Only, anyone who has lived long enough knows nothing and nobody is perfect. Desiree’s advice may have been what I needed, but it didn’t feel right.

After the fifth writing class, Andrea was done with Molly. She could see I wasn’t being vulnerable. She said, “Write about the thing you don’t want to write about.”

Is she crazy?

By that time, she’d already discovered her house was on my way to class. It was after the second class when she said, “Can I get a ride? I hate to drive.” So, every Wednesday, I sat in her driveway blasting her with texts, “You coming? Hello? Ten minutes and counting…” Just before we reached the parking garage, she’d say, “Just drop me off here. I don’t want to be late.”

I tried for weeks to write about Maclain and spent most of that time in tears. I didn’t want to disappoint Andrea or myself, so I kept at it. I also didn’t want to be the only person who showed up with nothing. My classmates had read some crazy stories. There was the addict, the cheater, the lady with more than one failed marriage. I owed them something real.

At the very last class, I did it. I read my story of losing my daughter, how she’d been struggling to swallow food and breathe without wheezing. I told them how we went to lunch with my dad on a normal Sunday. And how Maclain choked at the table, turning blue in my arms. 911, paramedics, CPR, rescue truck, emergency room. Doctors, lights, a bag over her mouth. Five days, no brain activity, walking through the exit doors without my daughter.

The class was quiet. I didn’t look up while I read. I didn’t want to see their sad faces or feel their pity. I would now be the lady in class who lost a child and I didn’t want that label.

When I wrote about my daughter’s death, I realized my tough exterior was nothing more than fake armor. Underneath, I was a mess. And not dealing with that mess was debilitating. I spoke to a therapist, eventually, but only a few times. Writing and sharing is what helped me work through this loss and the other wounds I’d pushed down.

It’s been almost 16 years since I sat in Andrea’s class. Since, I’ve attended or taught a weekly writing class. There are remnants of the old me. I’m still obsessed with timeliness and not looking like a total wreck, but before my mom died, we’d worked through our bullshit and were enjoying each other. I’ve worked through countless issues with my dad and kids. The biggest change is my ability to be vulnerable and let people in. That is something I learned from writing class and specifically from Andrea.

Writing class forced me to write the scary stuff, sit in the muck, and shuffle through the pain. That class, and every class since, changed me for the better. The secret I carried into my first writing class was more than a protective wall; it was a barrier blocking my escape. Exposing that thing I didn’t want to write about helped me to become much more than just that label.

Not only that, but the tardy professor became one of my best friends. We created a podcast and a writing school together—Writing Class Radio—and held business meetings on the tennis court or during long bike rides, and though our podcast never hit the top 10, we got more than a million downloads. We enjoyed a good 16-year run.

Andrea’s writing instruction is the foundation I return to every time I need to work through a new problem. Hers is the voice that says, “And your role in the argument?” Some of these problems even became stories that are published in major publications.

Andrea and I are 58 now. We’ve written about every up and every down. We’ve become each other’s sounding board and greatest supporter. I had no idea I would change so much back in 2010 when that curly-haired teacher burst into my life late and long overdue.

Last week, while heading to a tennis tournament I complained to my mom about how nervous I was. First, she said, “Andrea, none of this matters.” True. But being reminded we’re all going to die anyway and no one gives a shit if I win or lose did nothing to calm me. Next, she said, “When you get nervous, put an image of Zeus is your mind.”

I was down in my final match. I was tense and rushing. All my shots went out. Then I put my dog’s Zeus’s face in my mind. I thought about his pink nose and freckles. I focused on his goofy smile. I stopped getting mad when I missed. I stopped worrying about the score. Instead, I just played.

Miracles happen when you can trick your brain. I came back to win!

Miracles can happen in writing too.

I just picked up Writing the Hard Stuff by Nicole Walker. This is a genius guide to tricking your brain in writing. The book teaches how to tackle the hard stuff by using craft techniques that create distance.

I always thought a writer needed time to get distance to understand their subject and write well about it. What I learned from Nicole Walker is that time is not the only way to create distance. There are other brain tricks to employ like using research, page breaks, writing in a specific form (like a poem that uses iambic pentameter), creating metaphors, and braids.

Nicole says restraint frees up the mind. What? How is that possible?

First of all, it’s hard to write about things that are hard. No one enjoys crying all over again about something that happened in the past. So, first, a restraint tricks your brain into writing at all, and then the restraint tricks your brain into seeing connections that make your story worth reading.

Four years ago, I met Nicole Walker because she’s the writer-in-residence at the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society at Northern Arizona University, where Allison Langer and I help scientists personalize their science stories. In our class together, Nicole wrote a braided essay, which I’d never of heard of before, and involves joining two seemingly unrelated ideas. She wrote one paragraph about a personal cancer scare and the next paragraph about pinyon pines, which were drying out. She went back and forth between cancer and pinyon pines until the two subjects came together and told one story about survival. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and so I tried it.

In my story, I brought together jumping rope and the increase in numbers of hurricanes hitting Florida. Here is the other coolest thing ever: Nicole Walker edited my story, “A Numbers Game,” and she broke it down paragraph by paragraph in Chapter 5 of Writing the Hard Stuff.

You gotta get this book! It teaches you how to just play.

The truth is, I’m not always good at tricking my brain. My brain tricks me much of the time, because this takes practice. Come practice tricking your brain with me at the Tips Clinic.

My dad is teaching me so much. Turns out he always has, but I didn’t notice growing up. Instead, I always wanted more of his attention. And now he has dementia.

But here’s the thing: He knows he can’t remember stuff and he’s chill about it. He laughs a lot and now he wants to talk. When I see him, I tell him I’m playing tennis again. He is a great athlete and wants to know everything. Every time it’s the same, but I love this conversation.

I wrote a story about it that came out in HuffPost today.

Stories go through a lot before they get published. This was edited by Allison Langer and workshopped in her 2nd Draft class. (Ask me how you can join.) Then Noah Michelson at Huffington Post. The best editors in the business!

I’m sort of obsessed, so I know I’ve mentioned that I’m playing tennis again. I say again, because I played the junior circuit from age 10 to 15. Then I quit. Then I played again in college. Then I quit. After not touching my racket for 25 years, I started hitting casually again in a clinic twice a week. Then, a year ago, I got this nutso idea that maybe I was pretty good at tennis and I started playing competitively on the senior circuit.

Why have I quit so many times? That’s not a hard question. Because tennis is grueling. Tennis requires running for hours, and that’s the easy part. It also requires focus—like you can’t be checking your phone between games and expect to get your serve in. And then there are those women (not all) who cheat and accuse you of cheating and exercise all forms of psychological warfare. If you thought hockey was vicious, you haven’t seen old-lady tennis. The whole experience is agonizing.

So the real question is: Why am I playing again?

Yesterday, I went to our First Draft writing group hosted by Allison Langer and started to write. What I wrote was a dog-poo pile of words, but it was a start and that got me thinking, how will I ever mold that poo pile into a coherent essay? How does any writing go from prompt response to final draft?

I have a really cool video to share by Men 4 Choice. For decades, reproductive rights activists have kept men on the sidelines. I was/am one of those activists. “Get out of my bush,” was a popular slogan during the Bush years. Catchy right? Now, “Get into my bush,” should be the slogan. Reproductive rights—abortion rights—is everyone’s issue.

At 6 a.m. last Saturday, just hours after the dictator of Venezuela was captured by the U.S. military, my family (Vicky’s side) was celebrating. Hours later, I saw my progressive friends protesting on Facebook. I knew so little about Venezuela before marrying Vicky and at that moment I saw how politics can play out, sometimes at the expense of knowledge. I wrote about it that day and sent it to USA Today.

So much has changed, even in one week. Trump is as erratic as ever and my family’s elation is now mixed with anxiety, but still hope. I understand, and I’ve read this in a bunch of places, that it’s possible to cheer for the possibility of regime change in Venezuela and also, at the same time, criticize Trump for ignoring U.S. and international law and what looks like empire building.

It’s gift-giving season again. Do you love thinking about what’s special about your partner, kids, parents, nieces and nephews so you can present them with the perfect gifts? Or are you like, “Why do I have to buy my dad a present right now; what has he done for me?”

Do you love receiving gifts—the bigger the box the better? Or are you like my daughter who won’t open presents in front of people because they might suck and she can’t lie?

Do you think all this spending is good for the economy or bad for the environment?

Exchanging gifts can create strong feelings. So in a recent writing class Allison Langer gave the prompt: Worst Gift. I wrote a story about how my wife, Vicky, is the worst gift-giver, but never fear—I’ve come to rectify the situation by buying my own gifts.

My story will be out In Newsweek this Sunday, December 21, 2025. I’ll send you the link.

In the meantime, I got to thinking about what works in a story. Sometimes the alternative take is a little more interesting than what you might expect. Consider these potential story ideas:

When I was in college, my parents lived on opposite coasts. I thought they would get divorced. Now that my kids are in college, bi-coastal living seems like a good idea.

Or

My mom and my college-aged kid live with my husband and me, which is killing our sex life—yay!

Or

I was the other woman.

Or

I was set up on a date with a man I thought was so ugly, I tried to ruin it by wearing a potato-sack frock. We’ve been married 60 years.

Wouldn’t you rather read a story by the woman who cheated, than the woman who was cheated on? Or the story about the woman who was herself the terrible date?

YESSS!

I’m launching a new venture: All Sides of the Story, a live storytelling series featuring stories on a theme from all sides of the political spectrum. I want to create live shows again. If you’ve known me for a while, you might remember Lip Service, the storytelling show that filled the Miracle Theater. In those days, love was created between storyteller and audience members every single time. For real, two couples who met at our shows, actually got married.

I miss the connection that’s created when people share hard stories. I think it’s what the world needs right now. I think it’s what I need.

So, I put a call out for stories. The prompt: What situation or experience led you to who you are politically?

Hey Story Lovers,

Someone in my neighborhood is giving away three toasters. What’s going on? Obviously, the lesbian who lives there converted three straight women who converted back. Now the toasters have been revoked.

Let me explain: In the 90s, there was this joke that if you converted a straight woman into a lesbian, you’d get a toaster. You know, like if you opened a bank account, you’d get the glass dishes my grandma had.

The comic, Lea DeLaria, said it first. Then, when Ellen DeGeneres’s character, Ellen, came out on her show, her girlfriend got a toaster. Probably only two people on my entire mailing list will get this obscure reference. Please email me back if you know about the toasters.

What I love is reading a story when I get the references. What I don’t love is writing a story with a reference I know most people won’t get. I am so tempted to explain, which sort of ruins the fun.

Here’s one more example:

When my kids were young, we hardly ever ate at McDonald’s. Back then, I had standards. My sister-in-law Isa had different standards and took Tashi, who was about six, to McDonald’s for breakfast. When I asked Tashi what she got she said, “An Egg McMuffin and latkes.”

Get it? I thought this was the funniest thing she ever said, but maybe I have to explain.

Two years ago, I got into a conversation about race with my tennis coach. Andy is gorgeous with dark hair and light skin. He even played a tennis pro on The Real Housewives of Miami.

Andy is Cuban and loves to talk politics. He talks too much and I hardly ever agree with him because like the majority of Cubans in Miami, Andy is conservative. If he weren’t so cute and also a decent coach, I would never take lessons from him. I certainly wouldn’t be talking to him on a regular basis. But he taught me to hit high and deep and we developed a special rapport that’s built while sweating.

I was preparing to serve when Andy announced that Cubans weren’t racist.

I stood there bouncing the ball. My mind went all over the place, like it does sometimes when I feel challenged. I thought about a trip I took to Cuba 20 years before. When I walked off the plane, I was shocked to see so many Black Cubans. I had no idea any Cubans were Black. This is because I live in Miami and all the Cubans I’ve met here are white. To me, that was a sure sign of systemic racism in Cuba.

I said something really smart like, “Are you on drugs?”

And then the lesson was over and Andy stopped teaching and I never got to give him a piece of my mind.

Last week, Andy came back. He’s just as cute and just as talkative. I ran up to him and after a big hug, I said, “I’ve been waiting years to tell you, I’ve been to Cuba and from the looks of it, Cubans seem racist.”

Before I tell you how this went down, I want to mention that I know I’m a white woman weighing in on race and maybe I should callarme la boca (shut my mouth). Also, I know accusing a whole culture of racism is actually racist. But I plowed ahead because I had a long-held belief and was sure I was right.

I was like, “Listen here, Andy. Cuba is the embodiment of racism. Just the fact that Black Cubans are still in Cuba while white Cubans are here in Miami tells us everything we need to know about racism. White Cubans have more opportunities.”

Okay, I also recognize I was telling a Cuban all about Cuba, and that’s just obnoxious.

He said, “No. Cuba is egalitarian. Everyone has the same opportunity to leave. There’s a visa lottery. Black Cubans don’t come to Miami because of the perception that America is racist.”

He said there’s an expression, “Anywhere but Cuba” and that he could name 20 Black Cuban friends who went to Russia.

Wait…What? So, there might be another reason why so few Black Cubans have come to Miami? Maybe they’ve gone someplace else? Even Russia?

I don’t know if Andy is right. Maybe we’re both partly right. My point is, my point of view is limited. I already like Andy, but hearing his story helped me judge him less. He also opened my mind to more possibilities.

Perspective and experience make all the difference.

That’s why I’m launching All Sides of the Story, a live storytelling series. At each show, eight storytellers will tell a personal story on a specific theme from all sides of the political spectrum. While we might not agree, it’s difficult to hate someone when you know their story.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: I want YOUR story about the moment or ongoing situation that made you who you are politically.

Did the Cuban government confiscate your family’s business? Did you or anyone you love survive the Holocaust? Did you need an abortion and get denied? Write about how that experience shaped you. I’m in a weird moment when it comes to getting my stories published. Recently, I’ve asked myself: Andrea, who cares about your irritable bowel?

My answer: Not me.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t care about your irritable bowel. I do care. And I care about what you went through to get your story out into the world, which I assume gave you a stomach ache.

One of my good friends and an old Writing Class Radio student, Lucie Frost, just launched a hilarious and poignant memoir about life after retirement called How the Hell Did I Not Know That? You will laugh for sure and you will also learn something because the book is about the stuff Lucie learns, once she finally puts down the remote.

I read on the inside of a pizza box that Miami, Florida never gets below 10 degrees and never gets above 100. We can talk about the veracity of the source—the veracity of all sources—but instead I want to talk about how I’ve been enjoying our moderate climate ever since I learned this.

It’s obnoxious to admit this, but I felt smug when I read about the heat waves in England. Sure it gets warm here, but never dangerously hot.

This morning, I soaked up the sun on the tennis court. At 10 a.m., I checked the weather on my phone—86 degrees. Not bad, I thought, despite the sweat faucets pouring out of my knees. My coach told me he had to change his visor when sweat dripped off the lip.

Whatever, Miami is mild. The pizza box said so. Miami’s cool even, compared to London.

When my son, Sebastian, was probably 10, he wanted to close all the air vents in the van, apart from the one over his head. I said closing the vents makes the air too loud. Sebastian insisted closing the vents makes the air quieter. He jumped into the way back and closed all the vents. The air blasted so loud, I laughed.

He said, “See?”

I said, “See what?”

Did Sebastian really hear less noise? Does what you believe change your experience?

This got me thinking: We’re all living inside our own pizza boxes. Maybe we believe what suits us. I mean, it suits me to live in a temperate climate.

My family went to Japan. After we came back, we were telling my mom how it went. My wife, Vicky, started with the food. She said ramen restaurants specialize in one type, making them experts in duck or chicken. She sounded ecstatic about the broth and the pork that was slow-cooked for four days.

I said the ramen was good, but that the sushi wasn’t better than what we find at home.

Vicky said you could find anything in the stores: lanyards, sunscreen, chopstick holders, Japanese denim, sneakers... “There was a store just for the most adorable umbrellas.”

I said there were stores in all directions as far as you could see and then malls upon malls. I like a good store, but downtown Osaka made Times Square look quaint.

Vicky said the toilets heat up. They have built in bidets with choices of water pressure and squirt locations. Vicky wants one for our house in Miami.

I said it was all too much.

It was like Vicky worked for the Japanese office of tourism and I was Parker Posey’s character in White Lotus.

I didn’t love Japan.

I know, I’m lucky as hell to get to go to Japan and there were some things I did love about it. There was cat art everywhere and a temple with a giant Buddha. The mountains and rivers, pristine. The cities, extremely safe and clean. No garbage anywhere, which was inspiring.

The thing is, Japanese people are very rule abiding and I have a hard time following rules. You can’t switch seats on an airplane. You can’t eat ice cream while walking in the street. You can’t take the coffee mug from the hotel restaurant to your room. You can’t take a bite of toast in the buffet line. You can’t order one meal for two people in a restaurant. You can’t ask the woman at the coffee shop to fill your water bottle, even after you learned how to say mizu kudasai, which means, water please. Oops.

I also learned sumimasen, which means, I’m sorry. I said that often.

My daughter, Tashi, reminded me we were in someone else’s house, which was a reminder, mostly, that I’m an obnoxious American.

I know a few people who have been to Japan. My mom’s boyfriend and my niece’s boyfriend even lived there. What struck me was neither of them ever mentioned the rules.

Turns out, the U.S.A has rules too. One is you don’t say anything negative about Japan. Oops.

All of this got me thinking: What are you “allowed” to say and write?

One of the writers in our First Draft writing group requested we use the Tips Clinic (coming this Saturday) to talk about how to write a persuasive personal essay. I LOVE this idea.

The funny thing though, is there’s no such thing as “the persuasive personal essay.” There’s only the personal essay. A good personal essay is always going to be persuasive if the story hits you in the amygdala.

What?

I was playing tennis this morning with a scientist, so of course I told her about our work with the Center for Ecosystem Science and Society helping scientists personalize their science stories. She said, “YES! Hit people in the amygdala.” Then she explained that the amygdala is the part of the brain that processes emotions.

“We are human animals,” she said. “We’re persuaded when we witness vulnerability because our amygdala is activated.”

So how do you activate someone’s amygdala? Come to the Tips Clinic this Saturday to learn how. (Details below.)

In the meantime here’s our latest episode with a story by Dr. Jane Marks. Episode 206: Does Anyone Care About Saving Fossil Creek? Learn How Your Writing Can Build Trust. Dr. Marks tells the story of restoring a polluted river while she weaves in her personal struggle wanting to be an activist with the constraints she put on herself as a woman and a scientist. Because she’s vulnerable, I care about her and her river. I guess she hit me in the amygdala.

They simply told the truth about what happened in a self-reflective and vulnerable way and I think every single person felt persuaded. Lately, I feel like I have nothing to say. Or more, I don’t even care what I have to say. But then I wrote a braided essay, sort of by accident, and then I got it published in First Person Singular and then I got to perform it live at the Flagstaff Festival of Science. The performance wasn't an accident, more a lucky break. Allison Langer and I get to teach scientists at Northern Arizona University how to personalize their science stories. And I got to sciencealize my personal story.

I used a device—the braided essay, which is when you take two, three, even four seemingly unrelated elements and weave them together. I wrote about jumping rope and climate change and kept writing until those two parts did seem related. I’m not a huge fan of writing using a device, but sometimes following a form helps create something, even when you think you have nothing to say.

The story is about jumping rope to deal with my anxiety about a tornado that was ripping through Tallahassee when my daughter lived there. The story is called A Numbers Game because temperatures and jump counts are rising.
