One of the most well-known and popular designs in crochet is the granny square. Variations of square motifs have appeared throughout the history of crochet, from the early days of the craft to what we now think of as modern crochet. Granny squares are also a wonderful way to make the most of leftover and scrap yarn while creating something beautiful and personal.

This is precisely why I wanted to share this research with you. August has become a special month for granny-square enthusiasts because Granny Square Day is celebrated every year on August 15. It is an international, community-driven crochet celebration that began in 2014, when Susan Regalia brought the idea to Instagram. Her concept was to use Instagram’s grid to create the effect of a virtual blanket, with individual granny squares coming together as a giant online patchwork. Susan later handed over the hosting of Granny Square Day to Simply Crochet magazine. Since then, the celebration has grown into a global event where makers share their work and connect through a common thread: their love of granny squares.

People celebrate by posting a square with the day’s hashtag, joining online crochet-alongs, making a new motif or finishing a blanket, and sharing patterns and colour inspiration. More than a celebration of a particular crochet motif, Granny Square Day has become an opportunity for makers to connect, create, and show their work.

But the story of the granny square goes back much further than Instagram. So, I invite you to join me in this interesting review of granny-square history.

Before It Was Called a Granny Square

The square motif that we recognize today did not appear all at once. Its history can be traced through a series of crochet patterns and publications that show how square motifs gradually developed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Its origin, therefore, was not a single event, but rather a process.

An important early reference is Thérèse de Dillmont’s Encyclopedia of Needlework. The work contains crochet motifs that help us understand the kinds of square constructions that existed before the granny square became recognizable in its later form. Because different editions and publication histories are involved, I want to be careful about assigning a single date to this source. The English edition is commonly catalogued as 1886, while 1884 appears in connection with the work’s earlier publication history.

Dillmont’s work is useful because it allows us to look at crochet before the granny square was established as a familiar name and construction. It provides a glimpse into nineteenth-century crochet terminology, techniques, and motifs.

Then, in April 1885, Mrs. Phelps published the “Crazy Afghan” in Prairie Farmer magazine. This pattern is considered one of the earliest known examples of the granny-square form, although the pattern itself was not called a “granny square” at the time.

What makes the pattern especially interesting is its relationship to the crazy-quilt tradition. Mrs. Phelps explained that the design was inspired by the “crazy work” that was popular at the time, translating that visual language into crochet. The pattern used brightly coloured sections with a black border, an early example of the strong colour contrast that would later become familiar in traditional granny-square blankets.

The Prairie Farmer published the pattern again in 1886, and in 1888 Eva Marie Niles published a variation in The Boston Globe. These publications allow us to trace how the design circulated and developed rather than imagining the granny square as something that appeared fully formed at one particular moment.

In 1891, The Art of Crocheting, published by Butterick, included an engraving of a granny-square-like motif. The image provides another piece of visual evidence of how square crochet motifs were being used and how colour could become an important part of their design.

By 1897, Weldon’s Practical Needlework included a written pattern that was even closer to the granny square familiar to crocheters today. Its cluster construction used two double crochets rather than the three-double-crochet clusters that are standard in the traditional modern version.

Together, these sources suggest that the granny square was not invented in a single moment. Instead, its recognizable form developed gradually through published patterns, adaptations, visual influences, and the work of individual makers.

Early Twentieth-Century Crochet

The square motif continued to appear in crochet publications during the early twentieth century.

Needlecraft Magazine, published during the early twentieth century, contains afghan motifs and square-based designs that help document the continued use of these forms. Fleisher’s Knitting & Crocheting Manuals, particularly publications from the 1920s and 1930s, also provide examples of square-based crochet before the modern term became firmly established.

By the 1930s, granny-square-like designs had reappeared in mainstream publications such as Fleisher’s Afghans. The terminology was also beginning to change. In December 1933, The New Movie Magazine used the expression “granny afghan,” showing that the association between the motif and the word “granny” was already present by this time.

The specific term “granny square” appears later. The earliest use that has been identified so far is in the November 24, 1953, issue of The Daily Times-News of Burlington, North Carolina. This is an important reference, but it is worth leaving room for further research that might confirm, refine, or expand what we currently know about the origin of the term.

This distinction is important because the motif itself clearly predates the name. By the time “granny square” appeared in print, similar square constructions had already been published for decades.

The connection between the word “granny” and the women who traditionally made and passed down crochet skills is also interesting. Grandmothers and other family members undoubtedly played an important role in transmitting crochet knowledge across generations. However, the precise origin of the name “granny square” is something I would prefer to treat carefully rather than assume that the name definitely came from one particular tradition. There is no definitive answer yet as to why the motif received this name.

Making the Most of What We Have

The granny square has a quality that remains especially attractive to crocheters: it can make excellent use of small amounts of yarn.

Using leftover yarn was especially meaningful when materials were expensive or difficult to obtain. Working with odds and ends encouraged makers to design from the materials they actually had rather than from a predetermined colour palette.

The early “Crazy Afghan” provides a particularly interesting example. Its brightly coloured sections and black border show how contrasting colours could be deliberately brought together within a single design. The connection to crazy quilting also helps show that variety, experimentation, and strong colour contrasts were part of the visual language of the design from an early stage.

This does not mean that every historical granny square was made from scraps, or that thrift alone explains its popularity; the ability to work with different colours and relatively small quantities of yarn contributed to the motif’s flexibility.

The maker could choose colours intuitively, repeat combinations, change direction, or simply work with whatever was available. A project could develop one square at a time.

That flexibility gave the granny square a very personal quality. A simple construction could become a way to express individual choices about colour, arrangement, and composition, making the final outcome a reflection of the maker’s taste and style.

From the 1950s to the 1970s: The Granny Square Becomes an Icon

By the middle of the twentieth century, the granny square had become increasingly recognizable, and the 1960s and 1970s brought a major transformation in how the motif was used and perceived.

During the 1970s, granny squares experienced a major fashion boom. The motif moved beyond blankets and household textiles and became part of clothing, accessories, and interior decoration.

Crochet itself became strongly associated with the handmade aesthetic of the decade, and the granny square was particularly well suited to this moment. Individual motifs could be combined into garments and home textiles in seemingly endless ways.

Its modular construction also made it practical. A crocheter could make individual squares separately and join them later, allowing a larger project to grow gradually. Different colours could be introduced without requiring large quantities of yarn, and small amounts could be incorporated into the design.

By the 1970s, the granny square had moved far beyond its earlier associations with household blankets. It had become an iconic design element in clothing, accessories, and interiors.

From the 1970s to Modern Crochet

The story did not end with the 1970s fashion boom.

The granny square continued to be made, adapted, and rediscovered. What changed was not necessarily the basic idea, but the enormous range of possibilities makers began to explore.

Modern crocheters experiment with texture, colour theory, stitch combinations, shaping, and the relationship between individual motifs. The traditional square can be dense or airy, geometric or organic, minimalist or maximalist. Some contemporary motifs retain the familiar cluster structure, while others stretch the idea of the granny square into new shapes and constructions.

This is one reason the granny square remains so relevant. Its basic construction is approachable, but its possibilities are remarkably broad.

The modern granny square is not just a square; it is a canvas.

And this continuing evolution is part of what connects contemporary crochet to the makers who came before us. The materials, colours, patterns, and applications may change, but the idea of building something larger from small, repeatable pieces remains.

Why Granny Squares Still Matter

Granny squares have carried more than a century of making, mending, experimentation, and imagination. Their early forms show us how crochet motifs developed through published patterns and influences from other textile traditions. Over time, they became a language: a way to build something beautiful from small pieces while giving individual makers room for their own choices.

Modern granny squares continue that tradition, but they have grown into something richer. Today’s makers explore new textures, combine stitches, play with colour theory, and mix motifs in ways that were not common in the early patterns.

And even with all this evolution, one idea remains especially appealing: the joy of making something from what we have: scrap yarn, odd bits, forgotten skeins; they can still find their way into granny squares. Not every project is made from leftovers, of course, but the spirit of using what is available and turning it into something meaningful remains part of the motif’s enduring appeal.

Perhaps that is what keeps the granny square alive. It can carry history without being trapped by it. It can preserve an old technique while continually becoming something new.

But this evolution also raises an interesting question: what are the characteristics that make a crochet square a granny square? And at what point does a design move so far beyond those characteristics that it becomes something completely different?

There is a very thin line between a bold reinterpretation of the traditional granny square and a new design inspired by it. Perhaps this is part of what makes the granny square so fascinating: it can remain recognizable while becoming something entirely new, and it can even serve as the starting point for other forms of creation.

A granny square may begin as a few rounds of stitches, but there is almost no limit to what can happen from there. The story of the granny square is still being written. From the early crochet motifs that preceded its name to the countless interpretations created by makers today, this simple construction has continued to evolve while remaining instantly recognizable. Perhaps that is its enduring charm: a granny square can carry a little piece of history while leaving plenty of room for something entirely new.

And the story does not necessarily end with crochet. The granny-square idea has also found its way into knitting; but this is a subject for another post.

I didn’t think much about keeping a printed glossary beside my knitting until I realized how often I reached for it; not because I couldn’t remember the abbreviations, but because it helped me stay inside the knitting moment. That simple habit made me think about attention, learning, and the quiet ways we build knowledge over time.

For me, the knitting moment is that quiet space where my attention settles on the work in front of me. The rhythm of the stitches, the pattern, and the simple act of making become the center of my focus. Whenever I interrupt that rhythm to search for an abbreviation or look something up online, it takes a little time to settle back into it. Over the years, I’ve realized that protecting that moment is just as important as learning new techniques, because it’s where learning takes place, one stitch at a time.

Knitting, focus, and mistakes

Crochet and knitting are both handcrafting techniques, but they ask for different kinds of attention. For me, knitting demands a higher level of focus. Every stitch remains active until the next row, so mistakes can be more difficult to correct. I notice that I need to stay mentally present to keep everything steady.

Of course, mistakes happen in both crafts. When they do, they become opportunities to understand the structure more deeply. Learning how to recognize and solve them has made the process less stressful and more enjoyable. It’s one of the reasons I’ve invested so much time in understanding the fundamentals rather than simply following patterns.

Crochet, on the other hand, feels easier to pause. I can usually set my work aside and return without losing the rhythm of the pattern. Even so, I prefer to stop only after I’ve confirmed that my stitch count is correct. With knitting, I often find myself wanting to finish the row before putting my needles down.

This difference in attention made me think more carefully about the environment I create while I work.

Why I Started Using Glossary Sheets

Knitting has its own language, full of abbreviations and symbols that are easy to forget or confuse, especially if you don’t knit every day. After taking a knitting course, I decided to print the glossary and keep it beside my work. It was a simple decision, but it changed my knitting sessions more than I expected.

Instead of reaching for my phone or opening another browser tab every time I forgot an abbreviation, I could simply glance at the sheet and continue knitting. Those small interruptions disappeared, making it easier to stay immersed in the project.

Every knitter develops personal habits. Some knit daily, while others return to their projects whenever life allows. Some of us knit and crochet regularly, almost switching between two related languages. Having a glossary nearby respects those differences by making the information readily available whenever we need it.

Although this post focuses on knitting, the same principle applies to crochet. Crochet terminology changes between US and UK conventions, and the same stitch name can refer to different techniques depending on the pattern. A clear glossary helps avoid unnecessary confusion and keeps the creative process moving.

The idea extends beyond stitch abbreviations; conversion charts, needle size references, yarn information, or any resource you consult repeatedly can become part of your workspace. The goal isn’t simply to have information available; it’s to create an environment where your attention can remain on the craft instead of constantly shifting elsewhere.

How the Brain Learns Through Repetition

That practical habit also made me wonder why it felt so effective. When a glossary remains visible throughout a knitting session, it becomes part of the rhythm of learning. Instead of repeatedly searching for information, we encounter the same abbreviations naturally as we work. Over time, that quiet repetition helps them become familiar.

Research suggests that repeated visual exposure supports recognition and memory. Combined with the repeated movements of knitting, those visual cues gradually become associated with the actions of our hands. Little by little, the symbols begin to feel less like instructions and more like a language we understand intuitively.

Another benefit is that the glossary reduces cognitive load. Rather than trying to keep every abbreviation in working memory, we can rely on an external reference whenever we need it. The mental energy we save can then be devoted to reading the pattern, counting stitches, solving problems, or simply enjoying the rhythm of knitting.

In that sense, the glossary becomes more than a reference sheet. It becomes a quiet learning companion.

When the Knowledge Moves from the Sheet Into Us

Perhaps that’s why the process sometimes feels almost magical. As we continue knitting, the abbreviations and symbols gradually settle into memory. We stop translating every instruction consciously because the language begins to feel familiar. The knowledge that once lived on the sheet slowly becomes part of us.

Eventually, we notice abbreviations almost automatically. We recognize techniques more quickly, understand patterns with greater confidence, and become curious about new symbols we haven’t encountered before. The glossary doesn’t disappear from our workspace: it simply becomes something we consult less often because it has already done part of its job. Learning happens gradually, almost invisibly, one knitting session at a time.

Learning Ecosystems and Sharing Ideas

I’ve always believed that everyone develops a personal way of learning. Some people prefer notebooks filled with handwritten notes. Others rely on printed references, digital documents, apps, or annotated patterns. None of these approaches is inherently better than another. They simply reflect the different ways we build our own learning ecosystems.

For me, glossary sheets have become one small but meaningful part of that system. They help me stay focused, reduce unnecessary distractions, and support the slow, steady process of learning that makes knitting so rewarding.

Learning feels slower, steadier, and more grounded because it happens inside the knitting moment, not outside of it.

Everything starts with the value of handcrafted things, especially crochet and knitting. These pieces carry a special meaning because they connect us with the person who made them or with the process of making them. I talked about this in my previous post, and it remains true here.

In that sense, securing the thread is an essential part of guaranteeing that our project will remain safe through regular use, washing, dyeing, or time. A well secured ending yarn keeps the fabric stable and preserves the work we have invested in it.

Different approaches and aesthetic criteria. Why add invisible knots?

Once I reached that conclusion, I confirmed that knots can be a helpful option. They keep the yarn in place and act as a stop when tension or movement occurs. Still, I know some crocheters and knitters prefer avoiding knots for aesthetic reasons, and that is completely valid. Everyone has their own way of making things work.

However, I believe that all the effort, time, money, and attention we put into our projects shouldn’t be lost in seconds because a yarn tail slips or begins to unravel.

What to do with long tails?

We can keep things neat and secure by using invisible knots and a few simple principles.

• Wrong side placement: keep knots on the wrong side or between two stitches so they are not visible from the right side.

• Use one back loop: make the knot using only one of the two back loops of the stitch. This keeps it thin and invisible. Then hide it behind both back loops.

• Tug gently: after hiding a section of yarn, tug lightly so the knot settles into the body of the stitch. Repeat this after each group of stitches.

• Check tension: make sure the fabric looks even and the right side remains unaffected.

• Choose your tool: you can use a darning needle or a crochet hook. I usually start with a hook one or two sizes smaller than the one used for the project, then continue with a needle.

Hidden knots technique: step by step sequence

1. Work on the wrong side. Use a slightly smaller crochet hook and choose a loop in the fabric close to the yarn tail you want to hide, keeping the natural tension of the stitches.

   

2. Secure the yarn. Pass the yarn through that loop and tie a small knot over it.

   

3. Once you have the knot, form the invisible knot.Tighten it so it stays small and sits close to the stitches.

   

4. Anchor it again. Select another nearby loop (it can be in the row below) to help keep the knot in place.

   

5. Hide the remaining yarn. With a darning or embroidery needle, pass the tail through the inner part of the stitches, checking that nothing shows on the right side.

   

6. Adjust gently. Tug the yarn softly to settle everything into the fabric. Cut the yarn once a good length is fully hidden.

   

   This is simply the method I’ve developed through practice. It’s not a formal technique from a book, just what works for me. Maybe parts of it will be useful for your own way of working, and help you get cleaner, more secure finishes.

When hidden knots help: any time you have yarn ends, hidden knots can help:

• At the beginning: regardless of the starting technique, including the Magic Ring. You can even replace the slipknot with a conventional knot, depending on the type of project you are working on.

• At the end

• When changing colours or joining a new skein

This technique also helps when restoring or mending older pieces, since a small hidden knot can secure new yarn without altering the look of the original fabric.

What to make instead of knots?

Some makers strongly prefer avoiding knots because they feel knots affect the beauty of the fabric. That principle is debatable if the knots remain hidden and the project is secure, but alternatives are always welcome.

One common recommendation is to weave in the ends using angles, moving up, down, right, and left instead of staying in the same line or row. This creates changes in direction that prevent the yarn from slipping back out.

The magic of glue

Depending on the yarn, a tiny drop of transparent glue can secure the main knot. Some people use this regularly. It is especially effective when working with damaged or frayed yarn, or during restoration.

And for the tiny bit that sometimes remains after hiding the end, a tiny drop of fabric glue can help secure it even more, especially with cotton or other smooth yarns that tend to slip. I use just a pin‑head amount and apply it with the tip of a needle or a toothpick, placing it inside the stitches, never on the surface. Once dry, it stays flexible and invisible, and it keeps the finish clean through wear and washing.

Final considerations

The most important thing in crochet and knitting is protecting and preserving our work or someone else’s; the same applies when repairing items. I was recently organizing my closet and found a few knitted garments with small damages. Since I’ve been repairing and restoring some crocheted items lately, I immediately felt the urge to do the same with these pieces. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t withstand the stress of seeing a hole, a loose tail, or anything that looks like it could unravel. Something in me wants to bring the piece back to safety, to recover it.

When I say our knits, I mean the handmade items we have created, but I also include machine knits, crochet, and other textile techniques. The principle is the same: these pieces deserve care.

Among many reasons, I believe handcrafted creations deserve to be repaired because it preserves their artistic value and the intention behind them.

Why repairing matters

Repairing our knitted items carries emotional, artistic, and practical meaning. It honours the time and intention poured into a handmade piece, whether it was made by you or by someone else. Mending extends the life of something created with mind and hands, and it reconnects us with our own (or someone else’s) artistic work.

I found a sweater with a thread pulled out, as if something had snagged it. I used a crochet hook to guide the yarn back into place, almost like weaving in ends, gently tightening the fabric to restore its natural tension. Since the yarn wasn’t cut, I didn’t need to do complicated procedures; I just needed a crochet hook, patience, and attention.

I am not a professional mender, but two things guided me through the process: motivation, and a basic understanding of knitting structure.

This applies to curious knitters and beginners alike. The best approach is to follow the logic of the fabric: the way the yarn travels, the sequence of the pattern, and the visual harmony of the stitches.

Sometimes, simply stretching the fabric slightly or tugging the yarn helps restore the original tension. Blocking is also a wonderful way to finish a repair and help the fabric relax back into shape.

But in other cases, we need more precise, intentional actions. That is when research becomes essential. I did some investigative work and gathered useful criteria to guide the restoration process. Part Two begins here, in this moment when the knitter’s or crocheter’s attention moves from the internal experience of making to the external evidence left behind. The fabric becomes a record of choices: yarn, tools, fibre, twist, colour; each one shaping the outcome in ways that are both predictable and surprising. If Part One was about the maker, Part Two is about the material world they create.

1. How yarn thickness changes the fabric

Yarn selection depends on many factors, including the type of project, the desired fabric, and the yarn’s fibre composition. It deserves a complete post of its own. Nevertheless, it is important to say that changing the yarn, whether its type or thickness, is not the first option when making adjustments. It is generally understood that you chose this specific yarn because you need or want your project to be made with it. For that reason, the first adjustment is almost always changing the hook or needle size, not the yarn.

Yarn weight is one of the first variables that transforms a fabric.

• Fingering (also called superfine or superthin yarn) creates delicacy and drape.

• DK or medium sized yarn brings balance and versatility.

• Worsted, bulky or chunky yarn is thicker and heavier than DK or fingering weights. It introduces structure and warmth, and creates a fabric that is dense, warm, and substantial, making it ideal for cosy garments and accessories.

The same stitch pattern can look airy in one weight and sculptural in another. Thickness affects not only the visual result but the way the fabric behaves: how it stretches, how it falls, how it holds shape. A swatch in a different weight is not a variation: it is a different fabric entirely. Understanding this is the first step toward reading what the yarn is trying to become.

3. Adjust the hook or needle size if gauge does not match: if you have fewer stitches than required, go down a size; if you have more stitches, go up a size, while paying attention to how the fabric feels.

4. Consider changing the yarn only if tool adjustments are not enough: if, after trying nearby sizes, the fabric still does not behave as the project requires, then it may be time to choose a different yarn.

This order reflects the natural flow of making: yarn first, tools second, adjustments third.

4. Notes: what to record in your swatch

Keeping notes about your swatch helps you understand your own tension and make consistent decisions across projects. A swatch is more than a square of fabric: it is information. Recording these details turns each swatch into a small reference you can return to whenever you start something new.

Lately, I’ve been working on knitting swatches because I realized my knitting was much tighter than I expected. In many ways, it reflected the tension I carry as a crocheter. The moment this became clear was when I tried to make a swatch of a lacy pattern and found it surprisingly difficult to insert the needle into the stitches. I had to slip the needle through with more force than felt natural. That resistance, that tightness, was the first signal that something in my hands needed attention.

Consistent tension is different. It belongs to your hands. It is the way your stitches behave when you are not forcing anything, when your rhythm settles, when your body is relaxed, when you are simply working the way you naturally work. It is shaped by habit, posture, pace, and even your emotional state.

Tension is also a neuromuscular skill, something the brain and hands learn together over time. Every stitch reinforces a pattern: how tightly we hold the yarn, how far we move our fingers, how much pressure we apply without noticing. With repetition, these movements become automatic. What happens in the brain when we switch between knitting and crochet

Knitting and crochet activate slightly different neuromuscular patterns. Two makers can use the same materials and produce completely different results simply because their hands move differently.

There is no correct grip in knitting or crochet. Grip is like handwriting: personal, shaped by comfort, habit, and anatomy. What matters is whether the grip allows the yarn to move freely and the hands to stay relaxed.

How tension behaves differently in knitting and crochet

In crochet, each stitch is completed individually, which naturally creates more variation. You can work quite tightly because every finished stitch is done and left behind; you do not have to slide it over the hook unless you are working Tunisian crochet, which behaves more like knitting in terms of tension.

Knitting is different. Tension is distributed across multiple live stitches on the needle, which creates more uniformity. Knitting generally needs a looser tension than crochet because the stitches must slide along the needle. If tension is too tight, the movement becomes difficult and the risk of dropping stitches increases.

Switching between the two crafts can reset your hands. What feels normal in one can feel restrictive or loose in the other.

In my own experience, knitting requires a tension that allows the stitches to move along the needle without needing to push them forcefully, risking dropping them. But at the same time, tension needs to be firm enough to keep the fabric even and cohesive. Finding that balance is its own kind of practice.

What the fabric reveals about our hands

The fabric often tells the truth before we do. Uneven rows, tight edges, stiff sections, or sudden looseness can reflect changes in mood, posture, fatigue, or even breath. The fabric becomes a quiet record of how we were feeling as we worked, a map of our hands’ inner landscape. Learning to read the fabric is another way of learning to read ourselves.

What my swatches revealed

When I intentionally loosened my stitches, I noticed that the yarn moved more easily. The work felt smoother, more fluid, more enjoyable. The fabric changed too: the drape softened, the elasticity improved, and the overall feel became lighter.

Some things surprised me; others felt familiar. And in the slowing down, in the small adjustments, I found those tiny discoveries that only appear when you give your hands time to speak.

Below is a concise summary of their history, followed by an overview of the types of scissors most commonly used in fiber arts.

  The earliest scissors appeared in Mesopotamia and Egypt. These were “spring scissors,” made from two bronze blades connected by a curved, flexible strip of metal that kept them open until squeezed.

  The Romans introduced “pivoted scissors,” where two separate blades were joined by a central pin. This design allowed for easier handling and more precise cutting, becoming the foundation for modern scissors.

• A Valuable Household Tool

  For centuries, scissors were treasured objects, often passed down through generations. Between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, they were closely tied to sewing and sometimes worn on a chatelaine, reflecting both utility and status.

• Industrialization (eighteenth century)

  In 1761, Robert Hinchliffe in England began manufacturing steel scissors, marking the beginning of mass production and making scissors more accessible to households.

  During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, scissors evolved into specialized tools for sewing, embroidery, surgery, gardening, and many other tasks. Improvements in materials and ergonomics led to the wide variety we use today.

In crochet, knitting, embroidery, and sewing, scissors are more than a cutting tool. They shape the rhythm of our work. The right pair can make small tasks smoother, cleaner, and more enjoyable. Over time, many makers develop a favorite pair, one that feels balanced in the hand and precise in the cut.

This brings us to the many types of scissors available today, each designed with a specific purpose in mind.

Types of Scissors for Fiber Arts

1. Embroidery Scissors

   Small, sharp, and precise. Ideal for cutting thread, trimming ends, and working close to delicate stitches.

2. Thread Snips

   Designed for quick, clean cuts. Perfect for trimming yarn tails or cutting thread while working.

3. Fabric Shears

   Long blades and ergonomic handles for smooth, accurate cuts on fabric. A dedicated pair is essential to avoid dulling.

4. Pinking Shears

   Even though buttonhole scissors are not specifically designed for crochet or knitting, I have included them because many projects combine sewing techniques, and many crafters move between different disciplines. It felt important to acknowledge tools that support those intersections.

   Curved tip scissors, stork scissors, gold embroidery scissors, and other designs that combine function with beauty.

8. Multipurpose Scissors

   These are the scissors many of us keep close at hand for everyday tasks. They can trim yarn, cut small pieces of fabric, open packaging, or handle quick fixes. While they are convenient, they are not ideal for precise work, and using them on too many different materials can dull the blades quickly. Still, they are useful as a general companion when you do not want to reach for your dedicated tools.

9. Clippers

   Clippers are a practical alternative to traditional scissors, especially for crocheters and knitters who like to keep their tools light and portable. They make quick, clean cuts and are often preferred for travel because they are compact, safe to pack, and easy to use in small spaces. While they do not offer the same precision as embroidery scissors, they are perfect for trimming yarn ends on the go.

They can be in‑person instructors, online creators, authors, or even the makers who teach themselves through books and practice. At some point, we all become our own teachers.

Today, many teachers also appear in modern formats: YouTube instructors, Instagram makers, Substack writers, bloggers, and podcasters. These content creators and educators make learning accessible, diverse, and deeply personal. They expand the ways we can learn and help keep the craft evolving.

Designers

Designers are the artists who imagine the project. They create the concept, sketch the idea, choose shapes, textures, and construction, and give the piece its identity. Their drawings or mockups are the first visual form of what will later become a real object.

Beyond the initial idea, designers also make decisions about proportions, stitch patterns, yarn characteristics, and the overall structure of the piece. Their creative vision becomes the foundation that every other role in the process builds upon.

Pattern Writers

Pattern writers transform the designer’s idea into a clear, usable formula. They calculate stitch counts, shaping, measurements, and construction details so the design can be recreated by others. They turn creativity into instructions, logic, and structure.

It’s important to remember that patterns can be written in different formats: as text‑only instructions (row by row or round by round), as diagrams built from standardized symbols, or as a combination of both. Each format requires its own clarity and precision so that makers can follow the pattern with confidence.

Tech Editors

Tech editors are the meticulous reviewers of the pattern. They check that the math is correct, the instructions are consistent, and the logic flows. They also review terminology, abbreviations, and style so that the language is used consistently throughout the pattern. When there are charts, diagrams, schematics, or size tables, they verify that these match the written instructions. Tech editors often work in a systematic way, using tools and technology to track changes, compare versions, and ensure that every technical detail supports a clear and accurate pattern. They are the guardians of clarity, consistency, and precision.

Note on the origins of this role

Handcrafts like crochet and knitting are ancient arts, and it is difficult to imagine the role of a tech editor without the help of modern tools. In many ways, this role emerged alongside the advent of digital technology, which made it possible to track changes, compare versions, and review patterns with greater precision.

Even so, the principle behind the role has always existed. Long before tech editors were formally recognized, designers and pattern writers, and sometimes publishers or experienced makers, took on the responsibility of reviewing instructions, checking the math, and ensuring everything was correct. Some creators today still choose not to work with a dedicated tech editor, but the underlying value remains the same: accuracy, clarity, and careful review are essential parts of producing a pattern that others can follow with confidence.

Sample Makers

Sample makers create the full, finished piece of the design: the one that will be photographed and shown in the pattern. They work closely with the designer and bring the idea into its first real form. Their sample helps confirm the look, drape, proportions, and overall feel of the design in real yarn.

Testers

Testers are the first makers who follow the pattern exactly as it’s written. They represent the real user experience. Their role is to check whether the instructions are clear, whether the math and sizing work, and whether anything needs to be explained better. Photographers and Stylists

Photographers and stylists help tell the visual story of a design. Through photography, styling, and composition, they show the piece in its best light and help makers imagine it in their own hands.

Menders

Menders are the caretakers of knitted and crocheted items. They handle both structural repairs, such as fixing missing stitches, reinforcing worn areas, or closing holes; and aesthetic repairs, like treating stains or addressing discoloration.

Their work begins with analyzing the piece: the fiber content, stitch structure, tension, and the type of damage. Based on these variables, they determine the most appropriate method to restore the item while preserving its integrity and appearance. There are many different techniques available for mending, each suited to specific situations, and this topic deserves its own dedicated post.

Content Creators and Community Leaders

Content creators are the people who share their craft with their own style and personality. They offer tutorials, reflections, photos, videos, or glimpses into their creative process. Their voices make learning accessible, diverse, and deeply personal. They help others discover new techniques, new perspectives, and new ways of approaching the craft.

Community leaders, on the other hand, are the people who create and sustain the spaces where connection happens. They host knit‑nights, moderate online groups, organize local guilds, or build platforms where makers can gather, learn, and support one another. They nurture the social fabric of the craft.

And in many ways, all of us who participate in social media become content creators too. Every time we post a project, comment on someone’s work, share a tip, or connect with another maker, we contribute to the craft ecosystem. We inspire others to join, interact, learn, and share. Community grows because we show up for one another.

There is something quietly magical about learning through books, especially when their pages carry the weight of time. Before tutorials, online courses, and endless digital resources, many of us learned by sitting with a book, turning its pages slowly, and letting its lessons unfold at their own rhythm.

Recently, as I returned to knitting, I found myself drawn back to an old book that has been with me for years, a gift from my sister and a reminder of how deeply books can shape the way we learn.

A Little Story

As I mentioned in my previous post, my sister once worked in a bookshop. It was a wonderful experience for her; she learned so much and discovered treasures every day. One afternoon she came across something special: an old knitting book. She knew how much I loved knitting, crochet, and all kinds of handcrafting techniques, so she bought it for me immediately. That is how this book came into my life.

I first learned to knit when I was a child, but over the years I focused mostly on crochet. Recently, as I returned to knitting, I reopened that old book, and it felt completely different. Now that I am learning more deeply and paying attention to the process, the book reveals things I could not appreciate before. It feels richer, more meaningful, almost magical.

The Meaning of Books

Many of us grew up in a world without the internet. Books and television were our windows to the outside world. Life was simpler, slower, and full of small enchantments.

In that context, books were doors, portals that helped us grow, improve our skills, build confidence, and discover new worlds. They still are. So why write about something so obvious?

The Focus That Takes You to the Other Side

What I want to highlight is the focus that books require. Reading demands a different kind of attention. To enter the world inside a book, we must disconnect from everything else and cross that invisible bridge into a new space.

Attention, focus, and concentration are the tools that allow us to transform knowledge into understanding. I am not going to dive into neuroscience here, but I do want to emphasize this: the way we connect with books shapes the way we learn.

We still have books, and they still have the power to change us.

The Marvelous Internet

Of course, the internet is one of the greatest inventions of our time. Thanks to it, we are here now, connecting, sharing experiences, learning from each other. It is magic in its own way.

We also have online books, which are often more affordable and do not take up physical space. We can choose what we want to own in print, but what we should not abandon is the habit of reading.

But the internet deserves its own article.

About My Knitting Book

Now, back to my beloved knitting book: The Complete Book of Knitting by Barbara Abbey, published in 1971 in New York City. While revisiting it, I discovered she wrote another book, one I would love to find someday, even if it feels like a long shot.

This book is full of chapters that guide the reader from the basics to advanced techniques, all supported with images, graphics, and tables. What I appreciate most is the author’s intention: she teaches principles, not just patterns. She gives you the tools to understand knitting so you can create your own ideas.

In a complex handcraft like knitting, a book helps you stay focused, understand concepts in detail, and revisit information whenever you need it. Everyone learns differently, and books can be a crucial part of building strong foundations.

For me, this knitting book is a perfect complement to my current skills. Today we often learn through videos, courses, and tutorials, all incredibly useful. But books still offer something unique: depth, structure, and the kind of focus that helps us truly understand what we are watching.

That focus can make our learning richer and our creative work more intentional.

The Spine of Content

Self learning is dynamic and personal. A great way to begin exploring a book like this is to use it as a guide, a table of contents for your learning journey. It helps you understand the logical order of techniques and what to study first. And the best part is that the book will always be there, waiting to be opened again.

Final Thoughts

Learning is a journey that shifts and grows with us. Whether we turn to a vintage book, an online tutorial, or a mix of both, what matters most is finding the rhythm that feels right for our hands and our mind. Years ago, while I was trying out a yoga pose that looked a bit like a spider, I went searching for a caption to match it. That’s when I stumbled across the myth of Arachne, and instantly it pulled me into the world of handcraft: crochet, knitting, punch needle, all those practices tied to hooks and needles. Lately, in a chat with my sister about a course she is taking, the story came back to me. I thought it was worth sharing here, because it still sparks inspiration and motivation every time I revisit it.

Arachne’s story begins with thread. In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, she is a mortal woman from Lydia, daughter of Idmon, a dyer of purple cloth. Her weaving is so fine that people believe it is spun from sunlight and gold. Fame spreads quickly, and with it comes pride: Arachne boasts that her skill is her own, not a gift from the goddess Athena (Minerva in Roman myth).

Athena, disguised as an old woman, warns her to show humility. But Arachne refuses: she challenges the goddess outright. Athena reveals herself, and the contest begins.

Athena’s tapestry depicts the gods in their glory: her victory over Poseidon, and scenes of mortals punished for hubris. Arachne, however, weaves a flawless tapestry showing the gods’ cruelty: Zeus’s deceptions, Poseidon’s violence, Apollo’s betrayals. Her work is technically perfect, and its subject matter daring. Even Athena cannot find fault in the weaving itself.

Enraged by both the skill and the audacity, Athena strikes Arachne with her shuttle. Humiliated, Arachne hangs herself. Moved by pity, Athena transforms her into a spider: condemned to weave forever, yet granted the endurance of her art.

This “key end” of the myth can be read in two ways: as punishment for pride, or as continuity of craft. The spider becomes a symbol of persistence, patience, and endless thread. Arachne’s artistry is not erased: it is immortalised in the web.

For those of us who work with fibre, Arachne’s story resonates deeply. Crochet coasters, restored doilies, and woven textiles all carry echoes of her myth. Each stitch is a small act of defiance against impermanence: a way of binding beauty into utility. Like Arachne, we tell stories through pattern and colour, sometimes quietly, sometimes boldly.

The lesson of Arachne is not simply about pride or punishment: it is about the endurance of craft. Even when silenced, the thread continues. Every maker who picks up yarn or thread joins her lineage, weaving webs that connect past to present.

In the end, Arachne reminds us that artistry cannot be undone: it may change form, it may be hidden in corners, but it persists. The spider’s web is fragile yet resilient, ordinary yet extraordinary: a testament to the power of making.

The myth of Arachne finds its Roman counterpart with Minerva taking Athena’s place, highlighting the shared theme of hubris and divine retribution that resonates across both Greek and Roman traditions.

In Roman mythology, the tale parallel to Arachne’s is that of Minerva and the daughters of Idmon, a Colchian dyer. Minerva, goddess of wisdom and crafts, was outraged when the daughters of Idmon claimed their mother was the best dyer, surpassing even Minerva herself. Minerva appeared to them in the guise of an old woman, warning them to show respect, but they mocked her. As punishment, Minerva turned them into constellations: the Hyades and Pleiades (seven stars representing the sisters).

In this essay, I want to share some of the most important lessons that have caught my eye and that I've learned from this global community, lessons that fuel my own practice and I think would enrich yours.

Part 1: The Foundations of Creative Growth

1. Everyone Has Their Own Creative Flow
   Every artist possesses a unique and personal rhythm for learning, creating new projects, and mastering new skills. This individual flow can beautifully include pauses and periods of calm, which are just as vital to the creative process.

2. Artists Are Always Learning, and the Learning Process Is Continuous and Dynamic
   The creative process is an ongoing work in progress, and as human beings, we are constantly learning. Therefore, this process is always happening and evolving; we are perpetually growing and changing, adding new elements to our practice and refining others.

3. Everyone Has Their Own Way and Methods to Learn
   Since creatives are always learning, it's evident that everyone has their own distinct methods. All approaches are valid, as long as they contribute to achieving the desired final result.

4. You Can Combine Different Techniques and Experiment with Different Materials, and It's OK
   If you're a creative in any field, you don't have to stay strictly adhered to traditional bases and principles. It's perfectly fine to experiment, mix, combine, and create new styles and designs. This fearlessness in blending techniques can lead to truly unique outcomes.

5. You Don't Need to Do a Big Investment to Start
   You don't need to make a large initial investment to begin your creative journey. There are numerous affordable options for materials and tools, and your practice will naturally build upon itself as you advance. Start with the basic tools you need, and then gradually purchase what you truly require or consider necessary.

It's perfectly fine to have preferences; in fact, these special items often allow us to be much more precise. However, remain open to new possibilities and options as well.

   Each artist typically works in a certain way and with specific materials and tools. Sometimes through trial and error, and other times by adapting established techniques to their own skills and unique requirements, they develop their own methods. It's perfectly fine to cultivate these personal approaches and even share them with other artists.

    For us creatives, there are countless universes both outside and inside ourselves. We are sensitive individuals, capable of perceiving and connecting with both simple and complex details simultaneously, as our brains are constantly active and alert to any type of stimulus. Given this, inspiration truly can come from anywhere—from a beautiful picture to a captivating piece of music. This includes different types of places, artistic disciplines, colour combinations, or ideas from any source imaginable.

The Origin Story of Our Tools

The ruler is a far older tool. Its origins can be traced back to ancient civilizations, with archaeological finds showing they were made from bone, ivory, and wood. These earliest measuring rods were standardized by the Egyptians and later the Romans to ensure consistent measurements for building and trade.

While the ruler has a much older history and is less tied to a single inventor, the modern flexible tape measure is a more recent invention. The spring-loaded steel tape measure is most often credited to James Chesterman, a British metalworker who patented his design in 1829. He repurposed the flat wire used for women’s hoop skirts to create this new tool. Later, an American named Alvin J. Fellows patented a key innovation we use today: the "spring-click" or locking mechanism.

Before these inventions, crafters and tailors had to use cumbersome methods like unmarked strips of cloth or rigid wooden sticks, which made it difficult to get accurate measurements.

This is why National Tape Measure Day is celebrated annually on July 14th, to commemorate the exact date in 1868 when Fellows received his patent for his improved retractable tape measure.

Both tape measures and rulers are fundamental tools, but each has a specific job. The choice between them comes down to a few key factors: flexibility, precision, and purpose.

Flexible Tape Measures: The Crafter’s Best Friend

Flexible tape measures, typically made of fiberglass, are the ones most crafters are familiar with. They are perfect for projects that aren’t perfectly flat or require a measurement of a person. A rigid ruler simply can’t do this.

Here are some specific cases where a flexible tape measure is essential:

• Taking Body Measurements: This is its most classic use for sewing, crochet and knitting clothing.

• Checking Gauge in the Round: For knitters and crocheters, you can use a flexible tape to check your stitch count and row count on a project worked in the round, like a hat or a sweater.

• Measuring Curved Shapes: A rigid ruler can't measure the edge of a curved collar or the circumference of a circular blanket; the flexibility of the tape allows you to follow the curve.

• Determining Yarn or Fabric Yardage: It's much more practical and efficient than a rigid ruler when working with a long skein of yarn or a bolt of fabric.

Rulers: The Tool for a Firm Hand

A ruler is a must-have in a crafter's toolkit due to its key advantage: its firmness. There are specific uses where a rigid tool is not just helpful, but necessary.

• For Cutting a Straight Line: A ruler's rigidity makes it the perfect guide for cutting. Whether you're using a rotary cutter for a quilt or scissors to trim a seam, you need a straight edge to ensure your line is perfectly clean and accurate.

• For Marking and Drafting: Rulers are essential for drawing lines, squaring corners, and marking patterns on fabric or paper. A flexible tape measure simply can't hold a straight line for this purpose.

• For Quick, Small Measurements: When you need to measure something small and flat, like a crochet hook or a button, a ruler is often quicker and more practical.

• For Swatches: While a tape measure can work for a swatch, a ruler placed on a flat surface is more accurate, especially for garments that require very specific gauge.

Centimetres or Inches? A Matter of Convention

For crafters and sewers, the conventional agreement depends heavily on the source of the pattern or project. If you're using a pattern from the United States, it will almost always be in inches. If you're using a pattern from Europe or many other parts of the world, it will be in centimetres and millimetres. Because of this, many flexible tape measures have both metric and imperial units, making it easy to work with either system.

Final Thoughts: The Importance of Precision

Ultimately, precision is the difference between a successful creation and a frustrating one. The humble tape measure and the steadfast ruler have different strengths, but they share a common purpose: to bring precision to the creative process.

The decision to use a flexible tape for a curved project or a rigid ruler for a straight line isn't just a matter of preference; it's a critical step in ensuring your hard work results in a project you can be proud of. When we think about texture in crochet and knitting, we immediately think about two main elements you can use to play: yarns and stitches. In Part One of The Secret Power of Texture, I focused on explaining why texture matters. When we talk about the texture of a yarn, we're really talking about its character and how it feels and looks. In the world of fibre, yarns can be broadly categorised into a few main families based on these characteristics.

Smooth Yarns

A smooth yarn is one with a flat, even, and often slick surface. It has no fuzziness or thick-and-thin bumps. These qualities make them the ideal choice for projects where you want to highlight stitch definition, the design itself, or intricate patterns such as cables, lace, colourwork, filet crochet, and more.

Smooth yarns also tend to have a beautiful drape, meaning they flow and hang gracefully, making them a fantastic choice for garments like sweaters, shawls, and scarves.

Examples: mercerised cotton, silk, bamboo and Tencel, some acrylics, and synthetics.

Textured Yarns

Textured yarns are all about creating rich, tactile surfaces. These yarns intentionally incorporate variations in their structure, giving them a distinct feel and visual depth right from the skein.

This category encompasses a wide variety of yarns that inherently have bumps, loops, nubs, or an uneven twist, which gives them a distinct feel and visual appearance beyond the individual stitches. In other words, selecting a textured yarn means the yarn itself plays the protagonist's role over the pattern.

Unlike smooth yarns where the stitches themselves are the star, with textured yarns, the yarn is the texture. When you work with a textured yarn, the fabric you create will naturally have an interesting surface, even with the simplest stitches. This makes them fantastic for adding visual interest without needing complex stitch patterns.

They're excellent for cozy blankets, chunky sweaters, or accessories where you want to highlight the yarn's unique character. However, because of their inherent texture, they might obscure intricate lace or cable patterns, as their own bumps and variations can compete with the stitch work.

Let’s explore some types:

• Bouclé: Easily recognised by its characteristic loops, bouclé yarn creates a bumpy, curly surface. It produces a wonderfully soft, bouncy, and textured fabric, often used for cozy garments and blankets.

• Chenille: Chenille yarn (pronounced "sheh-NEEL," like "shuh-NEEL") is a popular textured yarn known for its incredibly soft, fuzzy surface that resembles tiny caterpillars or fuzzy pipe cleaners. The name itself comes from the French word for "caterpillar," which perfectly describes its unique look. It's considered a textured yarn because its very construction creates its distinct surface. Unlike a smooth yarn that has a flat, even strand, chenille is made by essentially sandwiching short lengths of fibre between two core strands of yarn and then twisting them together. It’s used for baby blankets, some garments, and amigurumis.

• Slub Yarn: This yarn features intentional thick and thin sections along its length, giving the finished fabric a rustic, organic, and uneven texture. It adds visual interest and a handcrafted feel.

• Tweed: Tweed yarns incorporate small flecks or "neps" of contrasting colours into the yarn's main ply. These little colourful bits add a subtle, speckled texture and depth, giving projects a classic, rustic, and sophisticated look.

• Ribbon Yarn: Flat and ribbon-like, this yarn creates a unique, often glossy, and slightly stiff fabric with a distinct linear texture. It's often used for accessories, bags, or for interesting accents.

• Fuzzy/Hairy Yarns: These yarns are characterised by their halo or fluffiness. Fibres like mohair and alpaca naturally have a soft fuzz, while some yarns are brushed during processing to achieve this effect.

Novelty Yarns: The Unconventional & Eye-Catching

Novelty yarns could be considered as innovative textured yarns. These are yarns specifically designed to be unusual and eye-catching, often featuring irregular textures, embedded elements, or unique constructions that make them stand out. They're not just subtly textured; their texture is their defining characteristic and often their main appeal. Some of the most popular are:

• T-shirt Yarn: Made from strips of recycled fabric (often cotton jersey), this yarn is chunky and stretchy, creating a soft yet sturdy fabric with a casual, modern feel. It’s ideal for home decor items like rugs, baskets, or large bags.

• Eyelash Yarn: Characterised by soft, wispy "lashes" that extend from the core strand, this yarn creates a very fuzzy, ethereal, and often whimsical fabric. It's popular for scarves, trim, or adding a playful texture to toys and garments.

• Sequined or Beaded Yarn: These yarns have tiny sequins or beads incorporated directly into the strand. They add sparkle, glimmer, and a tactile dimension that catches the light, ideal for elegant garments, evening wear, or festive accessories.

The Designer's Touch: Weaving Vision into Form

As we've explored the diverse world of yarn textures—from the crisp definition of smooth strands to the captivating character of textured and novelty fibres—it becomes clear that the true "secret power of texture" lies not just in the yarn itself, but in the designer's vision.

As designers ourselves, we have to know about the different options available to us and how to best use them to bring a new project to life. It's about seeing beyond the individual strand and thoughtfully combining the right yarn with the right stitch pattern and overall design to transform a concept into a tangible, beautiful, and textured creation that delights both the eye and the hand.

Shapes and lines have always been part of how I understand the world. Long before I knew the language of design or the structure of patterns, I was already noticing curves, angles, and the quiet geometry hidden inside everyday things. Crochet and knitting sharpened that instinct; movement and art expanded it. Over time, I realized that this way of seeing connects all forms of creativity, from fiber arts to dance to the simple act of observing life.

This essay is an exploration of that connection.

Shapes and lines are everywhere, in the curve of a petal, the geometry of a stitch, the silhouette of a moving body. They form the quiet language behind every creative practice, guiding the way we perceive beauty long before we consciously name it.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to this language. I learned to crochet when I was nine, and later added knitting to my life. Even as I became a dentist, yarn and handcraft remained a constant companion. Working with fiber trained my eyes to search for structure: arcs, diagonals, symmetry, tension, flow. Once you begin to see the world this way, you never stop.

Years ago, ballet was another place where I learned to notice shapes, not as a dancer in a professional sense, but as someone who grew up around movement. Ballet taught me to see lines in motion; crochet taught me to see them in stillness. Both experiences shaped the way I understand form today.

What makes certain images or movements so captivating? Part of the answer lies in the mind itself. Our brains instinctively seek patterns: symmetry, parallelism, circles, spirals. We respond to balance and proportion even before we understand why. This instinct is the invisible thread connecting different forms of art.

In handcraft, we create shapes through repetition, stitches forming sequences, sequences forming patterns, patterns forming fabric. In movement, the body traces its own patterns through space. The materials differ, but the essence is shared, a dialogue between structure and expression.

Mathematics lives quietly inside all of this. Not the rigid kind we learn in school, but the intuitive geometry that appears when creativity meets intention. In crochet and knitting, for example, complex stitches are built by repeating sequences of basic stitches or combining them in specific ways. These sequences behave like mathematical formulas, small patterns of logic that, when repeated, give rise to shapes, textures, and structures. We can see shapes in the arc of an arm, the curve of a shawl, the rhythm of a motif. It’s the order that allows beauty to emerge.

To notice shapes and lines is to deepen our relationship with the world. It’s a way of seeing that enriches every creative practice, and once awakened, it becomes impossible to unsee.

How does all of this relate to handcraft, especially crochet, knitting, sewing, and embroidery?

Although each of these disciplines relies on measurements, the most fascinating part is how we create shapes through design. The choices we make, increases, decreases, seams, motifs, silhouettes, all contribute to a particular style. Shape becomes identity.

In sewing and embroidery, this is often more evident: patterns outline the form, and stitches trace visible lines across fabric. But in crochet and knitting, we work with shape in a slightly different way. There’s the overall silhouette of the project, of course, yet individual stitches also create their own micro shapes. Some stitches behave like brushstrokes; others behave like architecture.

For example, in crochet and knitting we can build complex stitches simply by combining basic ones. This creates textures that often echo recognizable shapes, bubbles, cables, shells, waves. And when we work with doilies or lace, the design becomes almost like a drawing. You can distinguish figures with very specific shapes: petals, stars, fans, spirals. The fabric becomes a kind of illustration made of yarn.

We perceive all of this as a whole, but our eyes and mind are constantly decoding the structure beneath it. We break the fabric down into lines, angles, and repetitions almost without realizing it. It becomes a language we learn through practice and intuition. Once you understand it, you start seeing shapes everywhere, even outside the craft itself.

Handcraft and fiber arts are, without question, forms of art. And like all art, they carry their own secret formulas, quiet searches for harmony, balance, rhythm, and intention. At their core, they are built upon shapes and lines. Once we learn to see them, not just in our projects but in other projects, within the designs and patterns, and in the world around us, the creative process becomes deeper, richer, and infinitely more meaningful.

Historians agree that crochet appears surprisingly late in the textile record, becoming clearly visible only in the early nineteenth century. Earlier needlework traditions, especially tambour embroidery, are often mistaken for crochet, which is why its beginnings feel so elusive. What we do have is a blend of theories, scattered references, and the moment when written manuals finally standardised stitches and techniques.

Older sources also offer a fascinating perspective. Elizabeth Mathieson, in her book The Complete Book of Crochet, notes that the word crochet comes from the French croche, meaning hook, and that early hooks were tools used in lace‑making. Over time, a repertoire of stitches developed and crochet became its own art, often practiced in convents and grouped with other forms of “nuns’ work.”

And when we look back at its history, crochet reveals a surprisingly recent beginning. Its beginnings are much more modern than the stories often suggest.

Unlike weaving or knitting, crochet doesn’t appear in ancient textiles or archaeological finds. Early pieces once thought to be crochet were later identified as nålebinding or tambour work, which create similar textures but different structures. Ancient fabrics show weaving, knitting, netting, and needle‑looping, but never the loop‑by‑loop construction that defines crochet.
