sexual-misconduct story unfolded on the opposite coast.

San Francisco supervisor candidate Manny Yekutiel was publicly accused by another gay man of putting his hand down the complainant’s pants and grabbing his genitals at a party. The response was swift. Endorsements were withdrawn, public statements were issued, and the familiar machinery of #MeToo sprang into action. Police would later decline to pursue the case. But by then, the damage had already been done.

While the allegation itself remained, it was only part of the story. More revealing was the script that immediately followed.

The complainant said the alleged encounter left him so traumatized that he became depressed and unable to get out of bed. Yekutiel responded with the now-obligatory language of progressive politics: the accusations were serious, they involved “terrible things,” and the accuser “deserved to be heard.” He denied any wrongdoing, but otherwise embraced the language that now governs nearly every public accusation of sexual misconduct.

The underlying assumptions went unquestioned. No one asked whether an alleged sexual encounter between two men should automatically be understood through the same moral lens developed to explain relationships between men and women.

Anyone who has spent meaningful time in gay male culture knows that its norms have never mirrored those of heterosexual culture. This is not because gay men are indifferent to consent or incapable of recognizing genuine predation. It is because gay men are still men, and when two men come together, each brings distinctly male assumptions about sexuality into the encounter.

For decades, many gay male spaces—from neighborhood bars and dance clubs to Pride celebrations, bathhouses, cruising areas and, later, hookup and dating apps—operated according to an unspoken understanding: sexual initiative was expected, directness was common, rejection was normal, and both men were presumed capable of navigating the interaction.

A crotch grab, an unsolicited kiss, a hand lingering where it was not invited, or an advance that turned out to be unwelcome—none of this was necessarily prized or approved of. But such moments have long been recognizable features of many gay social spaces. More often than not, the response was immediate: “No.” “Not interested.” The hand went away. Life went on.

Historically, these encounters were understood less through the language of trauma than through the language of agency. That distinction changes everything.

The #MeToo movement emerged largely in response to relationships characterized by significant asymmetries of power: men and women, bosses and employees, producers and actresses, professors and students. Whether one embraces every aspect of the movement or not, its logic begins with the premise that one party often possesses greater physical, institutional or social power than the other.

Gay male culture begins from a fundamentally different premise.

Unlike most heterosexual encounters, interactions between gay men generally begin without an assumed asymmetry between pursuer and pursued. Neither man automatically occupies the culturally designated role of initiator or gatekeeper. Both approach the encounter from the same basic social position: as men who may pursue, refuse, misread, compete, retreat or try again.

Two men may differ in age, size, confidence, attractiveness, wealth or status, but they generally encounter one another first as men, each presumed capable of initiating, refusing, communicating boundaries, and bearing responsibility for navigating desire, misunderstanding, awkwardness and rejection.

This does not mean that power disparities never exist between men. A boss can exploit an employee, a celebrity can manipulate a subordinate, and a stronger man can intimidate a weaker one. But such disparities must be identified in the particular relationship. They should not be imported as an automatic presumption simply because one person made an unwanted sexual advance and the other received it.

That assumption creates a different moral landscape. It reshapes how sexual initiative is interpreted, where the line is drawn between clumsy behavior, harassment, coercion and assault, and the expectations placed on men to respond with resilience, proportion and personal responsibility. Most importantly, it changes whose perspective carries the greatest authority.

For generations, male culture assumed that men would take primary responsibility for their own conduct. The admirable man was not the one who avoided every conflict but the one who could confront it, recover from setbacks, exercise judgment and make his way through an imperfect world. Increasingly, our culture celebrates a different ideal.

Now, authority is derived less from agency than from vulnerability. Emotional injury has become the dominant moral currency. The greater the reported harm, the greater the weight assigned to the offense. Public discourse shifts quickly from asking, “What happened?” to asking, “How deeply was someone hurt?”

The Manny Yekutiel controversy illustrates this shift. The alleged conduct almost immediately became secondary to the complainant's emotional response. To many gay men, the reaction itself—not simply the alleged conduct—would have been the more surprising part of the story. Whether one believes the allegation or not, the public conversation centered on psychological injury instead of asking whether that framework fits the realities of relationships between men.

This is more than a legal or political development. It reflects a deep transformation in how we understand human conduct. What has changed is not simply the answers we give, but the assumptions from which we begin. The result is a fundamentally different conception of what it means to act, to be harmed, and to bear responsibility.

In the older masculine ethic, the central figure was the agent: the man expected to act, confront, endure, recover, and assume responsibility for navigating sexual encounters. In the newer therapeutic ethic, the central figure is the victim: the person whose experience of injury becomes the primary basis for understanding the event.

The transition is not simply toward greater compassion for those who have been harmed. It increasingly allows the declaration of harm to determine the meaning of the encounter itself. Questioning the relationship between the act and the claimed harm increasingly comes to be regarded as a moral failure in itself.

This represents a radically different vision of what it means to be a man. Ironically, the new politics asks gay men to surrender precisely what the gay rights movement fought to establish.

The original gay rights movement was, at its heart, a movement of agency. It rejected the notion that gay men were psychologically damaged, morally defective or incapable of directing their own intimate lives. The fight to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders, the insistence that gay people come out openly rather than live in shame, the demand to serve openly in the military and the campaign for marriage equality all shared a common premise: gay men were capable of directing their own lives and deserved to be treated as equals, not as a protected class requiring special paternalism.

Gay liberation demanded equality rather than pity, self-determination rather than supervision. Above all, it demanded that gay men be treated as men.

That aspiration was reflected in the dominant visual ideal of gay male culture during the 1970s and 1980s. Its iconic figure was unapologetically masculine: muscular, mustached, sexual, self-possessed and confident. Today, the public face of what is now called the LGBTQ community more often celebrates gender nonconformity than traditional masculinity. That transformation is not merely aesthetic. It reflects a broader political reorientation in which the distinctly male character of gay life has been deemphasized, and sometimes treated as vaguely suspect.

The irony is especially striking in San Francisco, the city most closely associated with Harvey Milk. Milk’s political legacy was built on visibility, equality and the insistence that gay people participate fully in public life. His politics reflected confidence in the agency of gay men, not their fragility. That a controversy involving a gay candidate for San Francisco supervisor should now be interpreted almost entirely through the language of trauma gives the historical reversal particular resonance.

Today’s progressive politics increasingly moves in the opposite direction. Instead of emphasizing agency, it emphasizes vulnerability. Instead of celebrating resilience, it rewards declarations of trauma. Instead of assuming that men can establish and defend their own boundaries, it encourages them to seek institutional recognition and public validation of emotional injury.

In doing so, it quietly asks gay men to reinterpret their own culture as though it were governed by the same dynamics that have historically shaped relationships between men and women.

This reflects a broader therapeutic turn in our culture: the elevation of vulnerability above agency, emotional injury above resilience, and institutional protection above personal responsibility.

Within this worldview, conflict, discomfort and unwanted sexual attention are understood less as experiences to be confronted than as harms requiring recognition, validation and redress. Men increasingly learn to distrust their own capacity to respond to adversity. They are encouraged to outsource conflict to institutions, reinterpret ordinary friction through the language of trauma, and measure the seriousness of an event by the intensity of subjective emotional experience. We lose something fundamental when that becomes the dominant way of understanding human conflict.

Men are not women, and pretending otherwise does not advance equality. It obscures reality. Men experience risk differently, negotiate status differently, establish boundaries differently and express sexuality differently. Any interpretive lens that refuses to recognize those differences will inevitably misunderstand relationships between men because it begins with a misunderstanding of men themselves.

The point is not that gay men deserve a lower standard of conduct. It is that the standards by which they are judged should accurately reflect the realities of gay male life.

Gay men once built a sexual culture that, for all its excesses and imperfections, was recognizably male: direct, physical, irreverent, risky, and resilient. It understood that an unwanted advance could be unwelcome without becoming a defining trauma, that a man could cross a boundary without becoming a monster, and that another man could defend that boundary without surrendering his sexual agency.

The question is not whether that world was perfect. It wasn’t. Nor is the question whether serious abuse between men exists. It does. The question is whether the logic developed to understand relationships between men and women is equally capable of explaining relationships between men.

Gay liberation fought to have gay men treated as men. Today, many of us are increasingly encouraged to understand ourselves more like women. If that's true, it may also tell us something about men more generally.

Thanks for reading! It is the way those accusations become immune to challenge. Across centuries, Jew-hatred has often operated as a self-sealing belief system: the charge and the denial are folded into the same narrative. The Jew is accused, the Jew objects, and the objection itself becomes evidence.

This is the damnation spiral: a closed system of accusation in which the Jew is condemned not only by the original charge, but by every attempt to answer it. Denial becomes deception. Self-defense becomes manipulation. Pain becomes strategy. The more the Jew tries to escape the accusation, the more tightly the accusation wraps around him.

There are familiar names for aspects of this dynamic: the Kafka trap, the unfalsifiable conspiracy theory, the self-sealing belief system, the scapegoat mechanism. But Jew-hatred has given this logic a particular historical form. It is not merely a debating trick. It is a recurring structure of accusation in which theology, race, politics, and morality have each supplied new vocabularies for the same underlying condemnation.

The content changes from age to age, but the structure remains stable. In every period, Jew-hatred assigns Jews a role they cannot answer their way out of. The vocabulary evolves, but the mechanism endures.

The first form was antijudaism: the religious and theological hatred of Jews in Christian Europe. Jews were condemned as Christ-killers, blasphemers, poisoners, desecrators, and murderers of Christian children. The Jew was not merely wrong; he was cast as spiritually corrupt, aligned with darkness, touched by the devil. This made refutation nearly impossible. Medieval Jews accused of poisoning wells during the Black Death could not defend themselves, because denial was interpreted as deception or devilishness. Jews accused of ritual murder during the blood libel era could not disprove the charge, because the willingness to deny it was treated as evidence of demonic cunning. The Jew was guilty because he was accused, and his attempt to refute the accusation merely confirmed the worldview that had already condemned him.

The second form was modern antisemitism: the racial, conspiratorial, and pseudo-scientific hatred that emerged in nineteenth-century Europe and reached its most catastrophic expression in the Holocaust. Here the Jew was no longer the false believer or religious contaminant. He became the racial contaminant, the internal enemy, the parasitic presence inside the body politic. Jews were portrayed as rootless, filthy, greedy, manipulative, financially predatory, and biologically dangerous — a cancer that had to be removed. This form of Jew-hatred was especially associated with the nationalist and fascist right. It translated older religious suspicions into the language of race, nation, blood, hygiene, conspiracy, and social decay.

Once Jewish guilt was imagined as racial, no defense could suffice, because the problem was said to exist in the blood. Jewish success was seen as cancerous. Jewish poverty as contamination. Assimilation became infiltration. Separateness became disloyalty. The charge was not about behavior, but essence. A Jew could not reason his way out of an accusation rooted not in what he did, but in what he supposedly was.

The third form, dominant now, is antizionism: the modern-day version of Jew-hatred laundered through mostly leftist language of human rights, antiracism, anticolonialism, and liberation. Its political architecture was shaped significantly by Soviet propaganda and later absorbed into activist, academic, institutional, NGO, media, and international bodies, including the United Nations. In this form, the Jew is no longer condemned as Christ-killer or racial pollutant. In a repackaging of ancient blood libels, he is condemned as Zionist: colonizer, apartheidist, genocidaire.

This is also where parts of the left and Islamist Jew-hatred have found a shared vocabulary. They do not begin from the same theology or political vision, but they converge around the same target: Israel as the symbolic embodiment of colonialism, Western power, and moral evil. Islamist hostility to Jews and Israel is thereby recoded through anti-imperialist language, while left-wing antizionism absorbs the fervor of a religious war it often does not recognize as religious. The result is a strange alliance in which very different worldviews are joined by a common moral myth.

This is what makes the current form so pervasive and difficult to confront. It does not announce itself as Jew-hatred. It arrives dressed as conscience. It speaks the language of the oppressed. It invokes equality and moral liberation. It is repeated by individuals and institutions that present themselves as guardians of justice, even when the facts do not support it. The hatred is not merely expressed; it is laundered to look clean.

While the moral energy behind contemporary antizionism presents itself as compassion, it is selective. When Jews come forward with their own fear, grief, vulnerability, or concern for safety, that compassion often disappears. Jewish fear is not received as fear. Jewish vulnerability is not received as vulnerability. It is recoded as manipulation or the inevitable backlash to Jewish power.

The result is a strange moral asymmetry. Compassion is extended to suffering when that suffering fits the approved narrative, but withdrawn when Jewish suffering complicates it. The Jew is not allowed to be afraid without being accused of exploiting fear. He is not allowed to grieve without being accused of weaponizing grief. He is not allowed to ask for safety without being accused of suppressing someone else’s freedom. Even compassion, once filtered through the damnation spiral, becomes conditional.

In its most contemporary form, Jewish objection to the demonization of Israel is framed as an attempt to silence criticism. Jewish recognition of antisemitic tropes is dismissed as bad faith. Jewish fear of slogans like “globalize the intifada” is recast as an effort to suppress voices of the oppressed. Jewish concern after October 7 is treated not as trauma, but as a strategy to distract from Palestinian suffering.

This is where many Jewish responses, however understandable, often fail. Faced with false accusations of genocide, apartheid, racism, colonialism, or supremacy, Jews often double down on defense. They marshal facts. They explain history. They clarify legal definitions. They show that Israel is not committing genocide, that Judaism has deep moral and ethical traditions, that Jews have contributed immeasurably to civilization, that Jewish vulnerability is real, that the Jewish story is more complicated than the accusations allow.

All of that is true. But the damnation spiral does not operate in the realm of facts. It operates in the realm of emotion, myth, symbolism, and moral archetype. The Jew has already been assigned a role: oppressor, manipulator, contaminant, usurper, hidden power, false victim. Once that role has been fixed, evidence is filtered through the myth. Facts that complicate the accusation are dismissed as propaganda. Jewish self-defense becomes proof of Jewish control. Jewish suffering becomes a theater of manipulation.

Both success and failure are interpreted through the same closed system. When Jews point to the grand record of Jewish achievement and contribution, those facts can be recoded as evidence of exceptional power, propaganda, or control. But Jewish failure is no escape from the trap. The catastrophic security failure of October 7 did not lead some critics to reconsider the fantasy of Jewish omnipotence; it became, for them, an extension of it, and was folded into a conspiracy. If Israel was strong, it was oppressive. If Israel was vulnerable, the vulnerability must have been staged or manipulated. Jewish competence proves domination. Jewish failure proves hidden design. The underlying belief — or fear — is that Jews are too powerful and need to be cut down to size.

This is why the charge is so difficult to answer. It is not simply a claim; it is a story. And in that story, the Jew has already been cast as guilty.

The phrase “weaponizing antisemitism” is one of the clearest expressions of this pattern today. Jews are accused of labeling criticism of Israel, Jewish power, or Jewish behavior as Jew-hatred in order to avoid scrutiny. On its face, this sounds like a defense of open debate. But the phrase often functions as a preemptive dismissal of Jewish experience itself. Before the Jew even speaks, his objection has already been classified as manipulation.

The logic becomes especially revealing in claims that Jews are uniquely unwilling to examine their own faults, power, privilege, or collective responsibility. The charge appears, at first, to be an invitation to self-reflection. But it smuggles in a premise that no other vulnerable minority would be expected to accept so casually: that Jewish objection to hostile framing is itself evidence of evasion.

A related demand is that Jews remain endlessly curious toward those who repeat anti-Jewish tropes, even when that repetition is unwitting. The Jew is asked to understand the accuser’s intent, explore his wounds, consider his moral framework, and remain open to dialogue. But the same curiosity is rarely extended in the other direction. Jewish fear is not investigated with care. Jewish recognition of old patterns is not treated as knowledge. Jewish alarm is not received as warning. Instead, the burden shifts back onto Jews: Why are they so reactive? Why are they unwilling to examine themselves? Why does this keep happening to them?

This, too, is the damnation spiral in psychological language. The focus shifts from the hostility itself to what Jews are supposedly doing to invite it. When Jews object to being singled out, the objection becomes proof of the very defensiveness being alleged. When they ask why they are being subjected to this kind of group diagnosis — especially during a time of widespread persecution — the question becomes evidence of bad faith. When they identify the framing as Jew-hatred, they are accused of ad hominem attacks and of weaponizing Jew-hatred to avoid critique.

The asymmetry is striking. In much of contemporary culture, other minority groups are encouraged to name hostile framing, coded language, microaggressions, and inherited stereotypes. Their objections are usually treated as information worth examining. But when Jews make a similar claim — that a conversation is singling them out, pathologizing them, or reviving old tropes in new language — the objection is often treated as manipulation or special treatment. Jewish lived experience is not received as testimony. It is treated as strategy and dismissed.

A related dismissal appears in the claim that Jews are “hyperfocused” on Jew-hatred, or that they care only because they are Jews. Here again, the asymmetry is revealing. In contemporary moral culture, proximity to suffering is often treated as a source of insight. A black person speaking about racism, a woman speaking about sexism, or a gay person speaking about homophobia is not usually dismissed as caring only because the issue affects them personally. Their lived experience is presumed to matter. But when Jews speak about Jew-hatred, proximity is recast as bias. Jewish concern becomes tribalism. Jewish vigilance becomes paranoia. Jewish testimony is recast as privileged complaint.

This is another turn of the damnation spiral. The Jew is first targeted, then faulted for noticing the targeting. The wound is treated as evidence of hypersensitivity. The alarm is treated as evidence of obsession. The refusal to minimize Jew-hatred becomes proof that Jews are uniquely self-involved.

This does not mean Jews, Israel, Jewish institutions, or Jewish communities are beyond criticism. No group is. The issue is not whether Jews can be critiqued. The issue is whether Jews are being placed inside a uniquely accusatory frame, and then condemned for noticing it.

At the very moment when antisemitism has become more visible, aggressive, and socially permissible throughout much of the Western world, the argument that Jews are uniquely protected from criticism now appears across both the political left and parts of the right. Jewish schools require armed guards. Synagogues are attacked. Jews are harassed on campuses and assaulted in city streets. Some are murdered. Social media platforms amplify antisemitic narratives to millions within hours. Demonstrations feature chants, symbols, and rhetoric that openly celebrate violence against Jews or excuse it when directed at “Zionists.” Public figures and politicians traffic openly in conspiracies that would once have been considered beyond the pale.

And yet many observers insist that Jews are not vulnerable at all. They are powerful. They are shielded. They are manipulating the moral vocabulary of victimhood to place themselves beyond scrutiny.

Every piece of evidence is interpreted in one direction. Every objection reinforces the accusation. Every attempt at self-defense deepens suspicion. The accused is trapped inside a story whose conclusion was reached before the conversation began.

What makes this especially dangerous is that the accuser often experiences himself not as prejudiced, but as brave. The accuser is merely “asking questions.” Merely noticing patterns. Merely refusing to be silenced. In the antizionist version, he may even see himself as standing on the side of the oppressed. But a question that already contains its answer is not a question. It is an accusation wearing the costume of curiosity.

The defining feature of the damnation spiral is not only hostility. It is the disappearance of curiosity. The reaction of the Jew is no longer treated as information to be understood, but as evidence to be decoded. The lived experience of Jew-hatred is no longer something to absorb, but something to redefine or explain away.

At that point, the person standing in front of you disappears. He is replaced by a theory about what he represents.

And once that happens, the conversation is no longer a conversation. It is a tribunal. The Jew is condemned not only for what he is accused of doing, but for daring to answer back.

Thanks for reading! An extraordinary number of people announce that what they value most in others is “kindness.” It appears so often that it has become a civic password: a trait one is expected to name in order to signal decency, maturity, and moral worth.

Especially on men’s profiles, this declaration often sits beside a more obvious reality: What most men want is not kindness but hotness. It’s striking that sexual attraction must be cloaked in elevated moral language, as though desire itself were too shallow to admit—and maybe it is in the current cultural climate.

But the hypocrisy runs deeper than vanity. Scratch beneath many profiles and public declarations celebrating kindness, and you often find not openness, warmth, or generosity, but something else entirely: a blacklist. No MAGA, no Trumpers, no Zionists, no this, no that, no heretics allowed. Sometimes the mask slips entirely: “F*ck ICE!” shouted in the name of compassion. Of course, no one is obligated to date anyone. Preferences are not the issue. What stands out is how often the language of kindness conceals an appetite for denunciation. Such moralism takes on a quasi-Manichaean character: the world split between light and darkness, the pure and the profane.

More revealing still is what happens when such believers are questioned. Challenge the assumptions behind their moral certainty, and the kindly façade can dissolve with remarkable speed. Ask, for example, what Zionism actually means or why it is inherently bad, and a curious shift often occurs. Moral confidence gives way to irritation, slogans, or personal attack. The advocate of empathy becomes punitive. The defender of tolerance becomes intolerant. The champion of kindness becomes mean.

Related Essay

The Erotics of Hatred

This pattern is hardly confined to dating apps. We live in an age saturated with the language of kindness. The word appears everywhere: in advertising, school initiatives, self-help culture, product branding, corporate values statements, and street banners. Angry protesters scream the virtue of compassion. Companies now train employees in empathy. We are told to be kind to servers and service workers. Tip screens now accompany the simplest transactions, often turning gratitude into social pressure. Even snack bars are sold under names like KIND.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" In large text corpora, “kindness” and “compassion” rise sharply around 1990. Whatever else changed, the prestige of these terms clearly grew. That shift was not accidental. Around the same time, several cultural currents converged. The Cold War ended and politics turned inward, shifting from external threats to internal wounds and identities. The older language of duty, restraint, and character began yielding to the newer language of therapy: healing, validation, empathy, trauma, self-esteem. This therapeutic turn was itself part of a broader elevation of the feminine principle—not women, but values such as care, feeling, receptivity, and emotional attunement—offered as correctives to a society widely seen as domineering, rigid, and chauvinistic.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Civic discourse has coarsened even as the language of compassion has exploded.

A central paradox of modern kindness is that it is often performed where it can be seen. On profiles, placards, and packaging, moral declarations confer status and attract approval. Much of what passes for benevolence is therefore less an inward discipline than public theater. But where no applause is available, contempt, selfishness, and rage remain. We advertise kindness in public and practice hostility in private.

Genuine compassion is rarely loud. It does not need to announce itself in a profile, a tagline, or a brand campaign. It is patient, discerning, and often unseen. It can tolerate disagreement. It does not collapse into fury when contradicted. Above all, it does not require enemies in order to feel virtuous.

What many now parade as kindness is often something colder and more ancient, something we imagined we had outgrown: the will to dominate draped in softness, coercion masked as care—and one more way to gain an edge in the cruel world of dating.

Thanks for reading! illness.

Lena Dunham, writer and creator of HBO’s Girls, just released her sharply self-aware memoir, Famesick, amid headlines, interviews, and the familiar cycle of mass consumption, rising to #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list. The suffering of the famous has become one of our preferred cultural genres, met with equal parts empathy and schadenfreude.

Yes, public figures are human beings. Their pain is real. And their lives can offer a lens through which we see—or momentarily escape—ourselves.

Dunham has spoken openly about living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that remains widely misunderstood—the same illness profiled in the feature documentary COMPLICATED. Her visibility offers an opportunity to better understand a condition many people still dismiss or misunderstand, especially the young people living with it outside the spotlight.

Beyond the limelight are countless people living with serious, life-altering illnesses that generate no buzz at all. They are not invited onto podcasts. They are not featured in glossy profiles. Many can barely get through the day.

Like Dunham, they live with conditions that are complex, invisible, or poorly understood. Their symptoms may not show up on tests. Their pain is dismissed as anxiety, exaggeration, or malingering. The lack of easy answers becomes a pretext to stigmatize and marginalize.

That is the world explored in COMPLICATED, which follows young people navigating debilitating conditions and systems often unequipped to handle complexity. Children are disbelieved. Parents seeking answers encounter suspicion—and sometimes accusations of medical child abuse. Families are torn apart. Their stories are invisible.

But beyond the headlines lies a larger truth. If we are going to talk about being fame-sick, we should also acknowledge those who are simply sick—and still waiting to be seen.

COMPLICATED premieres on Apple TV May 19 and is available for pre-order now. From atoms to ecosystems, life depends on the interplay of opposing forces: one penetrates and structures, the other receives and transforms.

This polarity generates an energetic circuit. In physics, it appears in the flow between positive and negative charge; in biology, between sperm and egg. The dynamic between these poles creates a rhythm of tension and release through which reality unfolds—matter, mind, and meaning.

The masculine principle is active and assertive. It imposes form and defines the self through action, expressing as logic and will.

The feminine principle is receptive and integrative. It connects and harmonizes, defining the self through relationship, expressing as care and cohesion.

These are not rival forces but interdependent ones, like yin and yang, each containing the seed of the other. Though generally expressed through male and female bodies, they extend beyond anatomy. In their highest and healthiest expression, each integrates its counterpart: the masculine softened by care, the feminine held by structure. They function as both symbol and substance—the map and the terrain.

Their relation reflects the nature of duality, like self and other, unity and separation, particle and wave. When the circuit closes, vitality ignites—in the cell, the psyche, and civilization.

When balanced, they give rise to coherence and renewal. When one overwhelms the other, distortions arise. For decades, Western societies rightly condemned the excesses of the masculine paradigm of domination and emotional suppression. But today, the pendulum has swung too far.

In correcting past excesses, society failed to grasp the function of the structures it was dismantling. Deprived of structure, even the highest feminine virtues devolve into their destructive inverses. Feelings untethered from reason spiral into chaos. Inclusion without discernment becomes the exclusion of difference. Compassion without limits leads to self-sabotage. When such tendencies dominate the social order, goodness darkens into shadow.

This is not an indictment of women, but a caution against isolating qualities associated with the feminine from what stabilizes them. Across traditions—from Taoism to Jung—polarity is not seen as conflict, but creative tension. When one force overtakes the other, imbalance follows.

Ironically, in the name of unity, Western civilization is fracturing. Haunted by guilt over its hyper-masculine past of conquest and slavery, it has relinquished borders, sovereignty, and confidence in its liberal foundations. After World War II, nationalist and colonial projects were cast aside as patriarchal, racist, and exclusionary.

In their place, globalism rose: a feminine-coded ideal built on inclusion, consensus, and the assumption of shared values. Institutions like the United Nations and the European Union embodied this aspiration: that supranational and multilateral governance could restrain nationalism and preserve peace through dialogue and interdependence.

Yet in practice, military strength was traded for moral posturing. NATO became more symbol than shield, as European powers outsourced defense to American protection while cultivating ethical authority through diplomacy and bureaucratic process. At the global level, the UN has struggled to fulfill its charter of preventing war and securing peace.

By seeking security without ground, the West abandoned resilience, leaving itself open to exploitation. Here again, compassion acts not as a virtue but as a solvent, dissolving the structures that hold us together and leaving us disarmed and self-effacing in a world that still plays by different rules.

A similar dynamic unfolded at home. In response to the rigid hierarchies of the postwar nuclear family, Boomers and Gen Xers veered toward openness and egalitarianism. Spousal roles flattened. Children became peers.

The result was an overprotective parenting style that shielded young people from failure. Motivated by anxiety, parents removed obstacles rather than helping their children face them. By replacing challenge with comfort, parents hoped to protect but instead fostered fragility, leaving generations less prepared for resistance.

What began as a reaction against rigid, emotionally distant parenting gradually became the new orthodoxy. The same preference for comfort over challenge was mirrored in public life. Immigration policy evolved into moral display, where enforcement itself was recast as cruelty and borderlessness as an ideal. Homelessness policy elevated housing as a civic right while sidestepping boundaries around addiction and public safety, mistaking permissiveness for care.

Education served as the incubator of these ideals. Rigor was sacrificed for validation and standards softened in the name of safety and self-esteem. It also taught an ethical framework centered on identity and perceived oppression, embedding this moral vision throughout public life.

The consequences are now visible across every level of society. Politics increasingly resembles the family, with the state assuming the maternal role of protector, provider, and arbiter of fairness. The so-called nanny state treats adults as children, policing behavior in the name of protection—from public health mandates to consumer regulations. What began as a maternal instinct to protect has become an institutionalized system of supervision that smothers freedom in the act of claiming to preserve it.

This cultural turn has fed a therapeutic culture centered on empowerment and healing, one that privileges fragility over form and makes others’ feelings our responsibility. The language of trauma and toxicity has colonized friendship, politics, and the workplace. Institutions speak the buzzwords of healing even as they abandon excellence. By rejecting outer form, civic life increasingly resembles group therapy.

Beneath these institutional changes lies a deeper philosophical transformation: postmodernism. At its core, postmodernism recasts truth—not as something objective to be discovered, but as something constructed through relationship, context, interpretation, and lived experience. Because truth itself is understood as inseparable from power, competing narratives replace objective inquiry. In doing so, it privileges relational and subjective ways of knowing over objective and universal ones, elevating the feminine principle of knowing while displacing its masculine counterpart.

Perhaps the most visible expression of this philosophical shift is the contemporary social justice movement. This worldview elevates lived experience over objective reality and centers identity as the primary lens of moral judgment. Yet not all subjective claims are treated equally. They acquire moral authority chiefly when they reinforce identities of vulnerability, exclusion, or oppression, but are often dismissed when they challenge prevailing narratives of victimhood.

Justice becomes relational rather than impartial. Reality yields to relationship. Rather than asking what is true, what happened, or who is responsible, the primary moral questions become who is hurting, who feels excluded, and who is most vulnerable. What began as an earnest pursuit of liberation now suppresses the masculine and enthrones the feminine as a cultural ideal.

When truth becomes relational rather than objective, power changes its form. The shadow feminine is especially difficult to detect because it does not announce itself as power. It presents as empathy and protection, cloaked in the language of inclusion and safety.

Rooted in ideals of fairness, DEI frameworks have become conveyor belts of emotional orthodoxy. Universities now coddle and correct, instilling a pedagogy of victimhood and redress across disciplines. In the professional world, merit yields to identity metrics, and conformity of thought and conduct is increasingly expected. With HR departments enforcing norms under the language of safety and equity, managers hold back, teams self-censor, and excellence gives way to optics.

Paradoxically, old privileges have not been dismantled so much as rebranded. “Maleness” and “whiteness” may no longer confer unspoken advantage, but ideological alignment now does. In this climate, diversity demands conformity—not of background, but of belief. Under the banner of inclusion, compassion morphs into performative consensus, soft coercion, and the very discrimination it claimed to oppose.

What emerges is a culture shaped by maternal instincts stretched beyond their proper bounds: harmony prized over truth, emotional comfort over necessary tension. Authority operates through reputational risk and exclusion, its rules seldom spoken yet widely understood.

In such a diffused system, the climate appears warm and open, but walls are felt everywhere. Hierarchy collapses into atmosphere. Those who transgress are not engaged but quietly sidelined by the invisible yet ever-present matriarch.

As the feminine rises unbalanced, its hallmark mode—fluidity—rises with it. Boundaries soften between categories, roles, and reality itself. Identity grows increasingly subjective and unstable. The healthy feminine receives and connects; the distorted feminine dissolves and blurs.

This shift now reaches deeper still: the deconstruction of polarity itself. Essential tensions are no longer integrated, but chosen at will—or erased entirely.

The collapse of gender realism is one expression of this change. As internal feeling rises to primary truth, biology recedes. The body becomes a canvas for self-fashioning, untethered from function or tradition. Masculine and feminine are recast as aesthetic markers, styles rather than structures.

In this context, the masculine–feminine polarity is treated increasingly as something to be crossed or redefined at will rather than held in tension. Struggle is no longer seen as a call to mature, but as a signal to reshape external conditions to align with internal identity. This does not deny the reality of gender dysphoria or the sincerity of those who experience it. It points to a broader movement: from shaping the self in response to the world to reshaping the world to accommodate the self.

Underlying this confusion lies a deeper misunderstanding: the failure to distinguish biological sex from the masculine and feminine forces present in all life. They are elemental modes of being: one builds, one binds; one asserts, one receives. Reducing them to identity flattens their depth and invites distortion.

When that distortion becomes culturally dominant, polarity itself falls under suspicion. The growing embrace of non-binary identity can be understood within this broader pattern. Rather than integrating masculine and feminine within each sex, it moves toward collapsing the distinction altogether, resisting boundary, embodiment, and complementarity.

Subjective feeling then rises to unquestioned authority, unmoored from biology or continuity. Yet paradoxically, this inward “truth” often requires external validation—social, legal, or institutional—to endure. Identity becomes both exalted and fragile, less a form of liberation than a dependence on affirmation, enforcement, and the management of dissent.

Unstable identity hardens into grievance, displacing personal responsibility with collective victimhood. Moral authority stems not from conduct, but from perceived suffering. Cancel culture, a feminine-coded mode of control, twists the instinct to protect and unify into emotional policing.

Though most visible today on the progressive left, this dynamic is not confined to it. The reactionary right often adopts the same grievance-based logic beneath a different rhetoric of tradition, faith, and fear of displacement. In both, wounds are sacralized, agency surrendered, and dissent expelled.

Where the unbalanced masculine secures loyalty through reward and force, the unbalanced feminine governs through the threat of social exile. Dissenters are not crushed, but branded as cruel, unsafe, or impure. Control is maintained not by command, but by consensus; not by force, but by exclusion.

The result is a worldview that treats individuals less as agents than as passive subjects defined by binaries of oppressor and oppressed, mirroring the very divisions it claims to transcend. Agency becomes something granted or withheld rather than cultivated from within. Public virtue becomes both glue and gatekeeper, determining who belongs and who is cast out.

Dominant in media, academia, and professional culture, this trend reflects an imbalanced civic order governed less by reason than by passion. It elevates inclusion above excellence and emotional safety above the burdens of freedom. Across the West, a feminine force severed from its masculine counterpart increasingly turns inward, mistaking moral fervor for power and real strength for harm.

No longer condemned only by outsiders, the Western world is now indicted by its own citizenry—disavowing its inheritance, choosing erasure over renewal. What began as honest reckoning has hardened into shame and rage, directed toward its internal masculine counterpart rather than real enemies. Like an autoimmune revolt, it mistakes the structures of protection for threats, attacking the very core it unconsciously desires and needs.

Societies, like individuals, mature not by excising their past or parts of themselves, but by integrating them. Absent that integration, they fracture. One path leads to dissolution: norms erode and responsibility fragments. The other path leads to domination: rigid control, enforced hierarchy, and the sacrifice of liberty for order. Both are distortions of imbalance, each a backlash against the other.

The framing may be archetypal, but the stakes are civilizational. Without polarity, charge dissipates and coherence collapses. As institutions falter, even democracy—the most delicate balance of form and freedom—begins to erode.

Civilizations do not fall from excess alone, but from a failure to hold the tensions that animate them: form and flow, limit and longing. Each principle, to become whole, must incorporate its opposite. Life endures when the masculine and feminine remain in charged relation—distinct, entwined, and generative.

Thanks for reading! with regularity in public discourse about Jews, “Zionism,” and Israel. It is stated casually, sometimes smugly, often with a tone of knowing certainty: Everyone hates you. The world is waking up. Everyone knows it. These kinds of phrases present themselves not as arguments but as observations, as though the speaker were merely pointing out a self-evident feature of reality. No evidence is offered, because none is required. The authority being invoked is not fact but consensus—an imagined unanimity that needs neither proof nor defense.

This language does not seek to persuade; it seeks to foreclose. By asserting that judgment has already been rendered, it reframes disagreement as delay. To dissent is not to hold another view but to lag behind what is already settled. Opposition is made to seem inevitable, and prejudice is presented as insight.

By invoking “the world” or “everyone,” the question is not answered but sealed. Case closed. Inquiry becomes unnecessary. Once such unanimity is asserted as total, any questioning is treated as denial or bad faith. Debate is not engaged but disqualified.

What is striking is how singular this pattern is. Nations are criticized constantly, often harshly, yet they are not spoken of as if their continued existence were a moral embarrassment from which the world is recovering. Even regimes accused of atrocity are debated in terms of policy, leadership, or reform. Their existence is not treated as a historical mistake awaiting correction. Only Jews are subjected to this verdict of obsolescence—the claim that history has moved on, and that anyone who has not noticed is either dishonest or depraved. It is, in the end, childish—the taunts of the schoolyard carried into adult moral discourse: Everyone knows you’re a — !

What makes this claim especially corrosive is that it is not even true. There is no global consensus on Israel, let alone the uniform condemnation implied by such phrases. Public opinion is fractured, contingent, and often ambivalent. The appeal to “everyone” does not describe reality; it manufactures it.

So too with the charge of “genocide.” Even false claims, asserted often enough across enough platforms, begin to simulate broad agreement. What is declared settled acquires the weight of consensus—not through evidence, but through repetition.

The dynamic is not accidental. Jews have long occupied a peculiar place in the moral imagination of the West, cast not merely as wrongdoers but as obstacles to moral clarity itself. The structure of false consensus draws on that inheritance. When someone says “the world is waking up,” they are not describing a discovery but declaring an end to discussion—and placing Jews, once again, on the far side of it.

This framing works even without a real crowd. The crowd is implied. By invoking “everyone,” the speaker recreates the experience of isolation, positioning the listener as backward and alone. Social pressure operates here without any actual agreement.

Its power is atmospheric. No claim needs to be defended because the conclusion is carried by tone, repetition, and mood. The listener is not persuaded so much as acclimated. Over time, the claim ceases to feel like a position at all. It becomes fact.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" historical memory. Jewish life has repeatedly been shaped by declarations that “everyone knows” something about us—that we are a problem, an irritant, an anachronism. In earlier eras, this took the form of blood libels and other calumnies: accusations requiring no proof because they were already socially “known.” The content has changed, but the structure has not. Even the widespread libel of “baby killers” has returned, met with virtually no scrutiny.

The appeal of this rhetoric lies in what it offers. It flatters its users as enlightened and aligned with progress. It dissolves responsibility into the virtual crowd. If everyone agrees, no one is accountable.

It also functions as a moral alibi. By locating judgment in an unnamed collective—the world, history, everyone—the speaker disappears from the claim. This diffusion allows bigotry to present itself as critique, without ownership.

Beneath the platitudes of awakening lies a more direct claim: that Jewish existence is the last unjustifiable thing standing, and that the world has already decided this. It is not an argument at all, but animus smuggled in as fact.

When prejudice presents itself as settled truth, it becomes harder to see and easier to excuse. It no longer sounds like hatred but like knowledge—and once declared universal, it no longer feels obliged to explain itself, or answer for what it permits.

That is why this language matters. Not because Israel must be shielded from criticism, but because meaningful criticism depends on resisting the claim that judgment has already been rendered. The world doesn’t wake up; people start repeating what everyone knows—and stop asking if it’s true.

Jews know where that road leads.

The Erotics of Hatred

A Psycho-Sexual Reading of the Anti-Israel global anti-Israel and antizionist fervor feels qualitatively different from ordinary political disagreement. The tone is not merely moralistic but affectively charged, theatrical, and compulsive. Protestors scream, weep, and chant slogans untethered from practical reality or concrete demands, displaying levels of emotional arousal more characteristic of personal trauma than public debate. It looks less like persuasion than expression—and release.

Many of these protests are led by women, and they often express a more feminine-coded style: emotionally demonstrative, relational, and collectively amplified. At its most intense, the atmosphere can take on something almost bacchanalian, a shared escalation of feeling in which emotional intensity itself begins to function as evidence of moral truth. The more one feels, the more one is seen as right. Affective display itself becomes virtue.

Within such an emotional climate, a protective charge begins to take shape. Outrage becomes a way of enacting care, of defending the vulnerable and placing oneself on the side of innocence. The result is a shared closeness forged through protection, urgency, and feeling. It is not accidental that highly charged slogans like “baby killers” rise to prominence, collapsing the conflict into a moral drama that activates primal, parental instincts—where, once framed in such terms, the defense of innocence begins to justify almost anything.

Beneath that sense of intimacy lies a deeper dynamic: power is experienced as cold, imposed, and fundamentally unjust, and therefore rejected rather than engaged.

That rejection is then displaced outward. Israel is not engaged as a specific nation-state, but as a symbolic object onto which resentment, rage, guilt, and shame are deposited. Israel is cast as hyper-masculine and patriarchal—powerful, bounded, armed, and emotionally restrained. Palestinians, by contrast, are rendered as both noble and infantilized: pure victims, yet also romanticized as primal and instinctual, carrying an undercurrent of attraction that borders on the erotic. The conflict is divided into villains and innocents, with “freedom fighters” cast as redemptive, even Herculean figures.

Such moral sorting is often formalized through the language of “settler colonialism,” which has become a false but dominant frame in activist discourse. In practice, the framework gives ideological form to a deeper psychological pattern: the recasting of authority as illegitimate imposition and of vulnerability as moral innocence. Israel is cast as an imposed, illegitimate presence, an extension of Western power, while Palestinians are positioned as indigenous and therefore morally pure.

As that translation shifts from political description to moral identity, the emotional charge intensifies. What begins as a claim about history becomes a drama of violation and innocence, in which power is experienced as intrusion, and resistance as righteous release.

Treating Palestinians as both romanticized and dangerous, yet incapable of agency, is not accidental. It serves a purpose. Infantilization excuses violence; romanticization ennobles it. Together, they create a moral exemption that would never be granted to a fully responsible adult.

This kind of moral sorting is psychologically soothing. It permits aggression without guilt and compassion without real engagement. The intensity of the outrage begins to look less like conviction and more like emotional gratification.

Nowhere is this clearer than in how the movement treats power and violence. Aggression is permissible, and at times even celebrated, when reframed as “resistance.” Violence is rendered noble when described as instinctive or reactive. Accountability is treated as an imposition. Rage replaces judgment. Intensity stands in for truth.

Seen through this lens, a more jarring phenomenon comes into focus: the willingness, in some quarters, to excuse or soften the reality of truly oppressive regimes like Iran. The appeal is not that such regimes are just, but that they are positioned in opposition to a greater perceived evil. Once moral judgment is organized around alignment, opposition itself becomes virtue. Agency blurs, responsibility softens, and actions that would otherwise be condemned are recast as defensive. What matters is no longer what is done, but who it is done to.

A double standard governs how strength is judged. Ordered, self-possessed strength is condemned as oppressive, while reactive strength is romanticized as authentic. Israel, and Jews more broadly, come to symbolize not just power, but structure, order, and limits. This becomes intolerable in a culture that increasingly elevates feeling over restraint. Desire for strength does not disappear; it is redirected, attaching to figures cast as downtrodden resistance fighters, where strength can be admired without discomfort. It is rejected when it governs, yet embraced when cast as victimhood.

For some, the conflict functions as a stage for unresolved dynamics with authority. Israel takes on the role of a father figure, experienced as cold, withholding, and unjust. The reaction is not simply political opposition but emotional revolt. Rejection of Israel becomes a socially acceptable way to reject authority itself.

Alongside this, a complementary dynamic emerges. For many men in particular, the conflict offers a sanctioned arena in which power, aggression, and dominance can be re-engaged after having been suppressed or pathologized in their own lives. Violence, when coded as resistance, becomes not only permissible but compelling. An object of identification or attraction. A release mistaken for moral clarity. The protest becomes a stage where impulses can be acted out symbolically, without being consciously owned.

Another layer of the phenomenon is the appeal of self-condemnation. For many in the West, far removed from real danger, activism becomes a way to perform moral seriousness. Unprocessed guilt around power, history, and inheritance seeks relief. When it cannot be metabolized internally, it is displaced outward. Accusation becomes a form of discharge. By locating wrongdoing elsewhere, the self is momentarily relieved of its own burden. One can then feel the weight of injustice without bearing any real cost.

These patterns echo long-standing anti-Jewish tropes. Jews have occupied a uniquely unstable position in the Western imagination: at once powerful and vulnerable, insider and outsider, particular and universal. This makes them unusually available as objects of projection. Israel inherits this role on a global scale, becoming not just another nation-state but a concentrated symbolic object onto which broader anxieties are projected.

None of this amounts to an argument against criticizing aspects of Israeli governance. Legitimate criticism is specific, bounded, and grounded in reality—not erasure. What distinguishes the current moment is the absence of those limits. When criticism turns into fixation, and outrage into ritual, something deeper is at work.

One reason for this disproportionate intensity lies in where Israel sits culturally: Western but not Christian, ancient yet modern, vulnerable yet strong. It embodies traits of perceived power that unsettle a culture increasingly organized around grievance and emotional immediacy. Its refusal to apologize for existing makes it a uniquely potent target. What is being reacted to is not only what Israel does, but what it signifies: boundary, authority, and persistence.

Most participants are not consciously aware of these dynamics. That is precisely why the behavior escalates. When underlying emotions are stirred but not examined, they intensify. Contradictions multiply. The response becomes repetition: louder chants, harsher language, and growing certainty.

What looks like political passion often reflects something else entirely. What appears as moral clarity is frequently a simplification that protects feeling from scrutiny. And what calls itself solidarity may be a distorted form of intimacy: a way of feeling close without the demands of difference.

In this light, the anti-Israel obsession reads less as a reckoning with history than as a ritual of bonding and release—rage shared, closeness simulated, and the self left largely unexamined.
