It has a name: Leisure Sickness. Researchers found that high-achieving, high-responsibility leaders are most at risk — people with heavy workloads, perfectionist tendencies, and difficulty switching off.

• Your stress hormones (adrenaline + cortisol) hold illness at bay while you’re in overdrive.

• The moment you stop, adrenaline drops first — leaving a cortisol surplus that temporarily weakens your immune system.

• Your body then does the repair work it couldn’t do while you were running on empty. That process feels like being unwell.

Key insight: Your body wasn’t suppressing the illness. It was delaying it. And when you finally exhale, the bill comes due.

THE REAL QUESTION TO ASK YOURSELF

It’s not: “How do I avoid getting sick on holiday?”

It’s: “Why is my body so depleted that it collapses the moment I stop?”

Being busy is not the same as being brilliant. If your immune system only holds together while you’re running on adrenaline, that’s not strength. That’s a warning.

5 SIGNALS YOU’VE BEEN RUNNING ON EMPTY TOO LONG

• You can’t remember the last time you felt truly rested

• You get sick every time you take time off, without fail

• You feel anxious or guilty when you stop working, even briefly

3 ACTIONS TO BREAK THE CYCLE

1. Protect your recovery like a meeting.

Block non-negotiable recovery time in your calendar each week, not as a reward, but as a requirement. Rest is part of high performance, not a break from it.

2. Stop being the bottleneck.

If everything runs through you, you can never truly stop. Identify the top 3 decisions your team should be making without you, and hand them over this week.

3. Use a 60-Second State Changer.

Before your next break (weekend or holiday), take 60 seconds to consciously transition. Breathe. Name and communicate who will take full responsibility whilst you are away. Give your nervous system permission to shift gears before illness forces it.

10 years since I decided to leave corporate, set up GiFT631 and become CEO of my own life. Your Brain Isn’t Broken. It’s Asking You to Walk.

Most leaders feel mentally foggy, creatively stuck, and constantly overwhelmed — even after a full night’s sleep. They keep pushing harder.

Start every day with 20–30 minutes of walking (or any other form of movement that gets you out of your bed or chair).

Habit-stack your walk:

→ Listen to a podcast that fuels your thinking.

→ Run through your affirmations out loud or in your head.

→ Use visualisation to rehearse the day ahead.

→ Simply let your mind roam — uninterrupted.

Feel the combined benefit of the exercise, the learning and the visualisation.

Our process is the Friday 15 (F15). It is quick, simple, and powerful, and part of a weekly operating rhythm. All it requires is for you to schedule a 15 minute time-block in your diary and have your #whatwinnersdo journal or own notebook with you.

Let’s set up and work through the activity now.

I created the 4M routine as it helped me get into my ideal performance state but also to help me think and make high quality decisions. It was built on instinct and combined the practices I needed to be at my best at the start of each working day. I believe it is increasingly needed by leaders today. Why?

Most leaders I work with share a common frustration: they feel mentally foggy, creatively stuck, and constantly overwhelmed ... even after a full night’s sleep. They keep pushing harder.

What does science actually tell us? The answer isn’t more effort. It’s movement, stillness, and letting the brain breathe.

What the Research Says
In his landmark 1984 study, Dr. Roger Ulrich discovered that hospital patients with a view of trees recovered faster, used fewer painkillers, and expressed less negativity than those staring at a brick wall. Nature, it turned out, isn’t just a backdrop to our lives; it’s a sculptor of our health.

Dr. Jenny Roe, an environmental psychologist at the University of Virginia, found that walking in urban green spaces shifts the brain from anxious beta waves into creative alpha and meditative theta waves, a flow state. Her research also found that walking in green spaces three to four times a week reduces the likelihood of turning to drugs for mental health problems by a third. A Finnish study backed this up: time in nature isn’t a luxury. For high-performers, it’s a competitive edge.

And walking itself? Researchers at the University of Utah found it improves creativity and problem-solving ability by 50%. Walking restructures the brain’s grey matter, boosts dopamine and serotonin, and even releases myokines: molecules from your skeletal muscles that trigger hope and wellbeing. That’s not metaphor, that’s BIOLOGY.

• Clarity of vision and goal brings a sense of purpose and enables us to take intentional actions.

• The British Olympian, Jack Green shared a great example of how to practically do this via a LinkedIn post.

• Jack was a 400m hurdler.

• His grandfather was his inspiration as he had sacrificed a great deal to fund Jack’s training and journey to the Olympic arena.

• Jack frequently drew a small box on the inside of his wrist.

• During difficult training sessions or when he needed to push himself further and didn’t feel he could, he would glance at the box on his wrist.

• He visualised an image of his grandfather inside the box.

• Seeing his grandfather gave him the extra motivation to keep going and to push himself harder.

The Learnings:

• How clear is your why?

• What is the meaning that supports this vision or goal?

• How can you create visual representations and / or visualise something that will inspire you in moments of need? (Great teams do this too!).

The Story

Context: Gail Kelly, former CEO of Westpac Group, shared this powerful leadership story about the hidden costs of legacy processes.

In 1947, Princess Elizabeth travelled to South Africa on a Royal State visit. She wanted to see whales.

Local authorities set up a process: coastguards and surf life savers across the region would submit daily whale sighting reports. The location with the highest frequency of sightings would be sent to the future Queen.

Many years later, a new leader took over the central department. They noticed the daily whale reports were still being collected and asked why.

No one could give him a meaningful answer.

After investigation, he discovered: in 1993 - 46 years after the original visit - people were still collating and sending a daily whale report, because in 1947, the future Queen wanted to see whales.

What Happened Next?

Gail turned to me and asked three powerful questions:

• How many whale reports exist in your business?

• How many whale reports have you created?

• Great leadership = asking questions and inspiring action through storytelling!

We went on a huge ‘whale report’ hunt:

• Some reporting we scrapped completely.

• Some we streamlined the process.

• Some we changed the frequency, the amount of data collected, the distribution (only those who needed the report received it).

• Some we had really good conversation about and kept (often with some efficiencies found).

• On occasions, it was helpful just to re-communicate why a certain report mattered and what it was used for (context / purpose / value).

However, not everything goes perfectly all of the time, so how do you find the opportunity to improve?

From my experience as a sales leader, I always followed this sequence to find the opportunity. This applies to an individual sales person, a team or even the total sales force within the business.

See - Success in sales starts with activity, activity, activity. ‘The more customers I see the more successful I become’ was a phrase I often heard from my most successful team members. ‘You can not sell to an empty chair’ was one of my own!

Hence, the first place to start is to look at the activity levels. Once these are optimised for quality as well as volume, the next part is:

Say - if you seeing enough customers but not achieving success, it is because your team member(s) are not saying the right things. This is where the critical role of the sales leader comes in………observation, coaching and feedback. How else will you know for sure where the process is breaking down? I also recommend peer to peer coaching to provide growth opportunities for other team members to pass on their skills and best practices. Identify where one sales person is excelling in an area to help another who is finding the same aspect of customer conversation or the wider sales process challenging.

The GiFT631 Friday 15 is a great self review process for sales people and can be really effective in helping you identify peer to peer coaching opportunities.

If you are seeing and saying the right things and performance is still not excellent, check out the:

Attitude - this is a non negotiable. A positive, can do, action orientated, optimistic and curious (growth orientated) attitude is a given in customer facing roles. Curiosity is important as you want a team who want to continually improve. Why is another person achieving great success than I am? How are they doing it? What can I learn?

‘Attitudes are infectious’ and influence the mindset of colleagues and customers either positively or negatively! If you bring a victim, cynical and negative mindset, you need to look elsewhere. As Jim Collins says, you need the right people on the bus AND the wrong people off it and quickly.

Belief and Motivation - Whilst you can argue these are internal drivers, when I look at a sales business if belief/motivation are lacking look at the manager. How is he or she leading the team? How are they lifting people both in terms of their energy and skills? If people are seeing enough customers, largely saying the right things and their attitude seems positive and ‘can do’ is it a challenge of leadership? Too much micromanagement? Too much control? He told me that the Bush Fire Service in Western Australia uses two types of debrief after every significant incident. One happens on the same day. The other happens one to two weeks later. Both are structured. Both are deliberate. Both are non-negotiable.

And here’s what struck me most: he’d already started adapting this approach with his corporate team. A five to ten-minute catch-up after key tasks. Observing behaviour. Capturing what worked and what didn’t. In his words: “I have found it to be extremely effective.”

Most Leaders Skip the Most Important Part

Think about the last significant event in your team. A big presentation. A difficult client meeting. A project that went sideways. A quarter-end push.

What happened immediately after?

If you’re like most leaders, you moved on. The calendar was already full. The next fire was already burning. The debrief, if it happened at all, was informal, rushed, or forgotten entirely.

But the world’s highest-performing teams - military units, elite sports teams, emergency services, all share one non-negotiable discipline: they debrief every significant event. Not to assign blame. To lock in learning, surface risk early, and make the next performance better than the last.

This isn’t theory. It’s how winners operate.

The Two Types of Debrief (And When to Use Each)

Here’s what the Bush Fire Service gets right, and what most organisations get wrong. There are two fundamentally different debriefs. They serve different purposes. And you need both.

The Hot Debrief

Done on the same day. Captures raw feelings and first reactions before they fade or get filtered. Five to fifteen minutes. Informal. But deliberate.

The goal isn’t a full post-mortem. It’s early intervention. It’s catching welfare issues before they become problems. It’s fixing small procedural errors before they become habits. It’s letting your team know: your experience matters, and we’re paying attention.

• What went well that we must keep doing?

• What didn’t go as planned — and why?

• What’s one thing we’d change if we did this again tomorrow?

The Formal Debrief

One to two weeks later. Agenda-driven. Led by someone who wasn’t directly involved in the event, which removes ego and bias from the room. Documented, and distributed for accountability.

This is where you revisit the action items from the Hot Debrief. Did we fix what we said we’d fix? What do we need to change structurally? What’s the learning we want to carry forward?

This is the debrief that creates organisational memory the kind that prevents the same mistakes from repeating in six months.

Debriefs Works in Business Too - Here’s How to Start

You don’t need to be a firefighter to use this discipline. In fact, the leader who shared this story has already proven it works in a corporate banking environment.

Here are five moments where you can run a Hot Debrief starting this week:

• After a client meeting or pitch - while impressions are still fresh

• Following a difficult performance conversation - to check in with yourself and your team

• At the end of a team presentation - before the room disperses

• After any event that didn’t go to plan - especially then

• On the drive back from a conference or offsite - use the time deliberately

And here’s the thing that leaders noticed - the same thing I’ve seen across 30 years of senior leadership: the quality of your next performance is determined largely by the quality of your reflection on the last one.

Pick one upcoming event - a meeting, a presentation, a client call, a project milestone, and commit to running a five to ten-minute Hot Debrief immediately after it.

Use three questions:

• What went well that we must keep doing?

• What didn’t go as planned?

• What’s one thing we’d change if we did this again tomorrow?

1. REFRAME YOUR ADVANTAGE

2. NETWORKING THE QUIET WAY ·FEWER, BETTER CONVERSATIONS

Meaning what you say: Doing what you say you are going to do – building that trust and report with the individuals., so like the follow up in 24-48 hours, ensure you do it if you say you are going to.

Listen more than you speak – but make sure you are paying attention, verbal nods etc. Ensuring you repeat/follow up to show you understand.

Before

• Connect with 2-3 people you want to meet on LinkedIn a few days before the event, so you can use the connection as an icebreaker when you meet them in person.

• Research 2–3 people you’d like to meet

• Prepare 3 meaningful questions:

  “What’s a challenge you’re working through?”

  “What’s next for you this year?”

  “What’s really going well for you this year?”

• Prepare physically: Make sure you feel good about what you are wearing. Be ready and centred to give a confident handshake and make good eye contact.

During

• Aim for 1–2 quality conversations, not 20

• Listen more than you speak

• Build on what they say, not what you planned

  “Tell me more about that...”

• #give2get: Once you have identified those you want to connect with, work out what you can give. How can you add value to them? A reference to one of their interests, an offer to help with a connection, time or resource.

After

• Follow up within 24–48 hours

• Send a quick follow-up post on LinkedIn after the session to show you followed through.

• Personalise your message: Reference something specific from the conversation.

• Add value by sending a link, an article, a helpful connection or an idea.

3. PRESENTING WITH IMPACT (QUIET STYLE) ·CLARITY + STRUCTURE + PRESENCE

Proper Preparation: Grounding/breathing to provide a ‘steady’ base to start presenting from (Ask yourself before presenting: Do you feel relaxed/ready?)

Ensuring you are prepared, removes that additional stress.

• Simple Structure

• Opening: what this is about (clear + simple)

• Middle: 2–3 key ideas

• Close: one clear takeaway or action

• Speak slightly slower than feels normal

• Use pauses — they create authority

• Let key points land before moving on

• Rule: “If it matters — pause after it.
