Rural AI Catalyst Fund

Organization: TechSoup, with support from Google and the Nasdaq Foundation

Description: A national initiative helping rural organizations in Georgia, Nebraska, and Texas build AI and data capacity. Grants of $250,000 or $500,000 support locally driven projects in agriculture, education, healthcare, or small business that use AI or data tools in a meaningful, central way. Applicants do not need to be AI experts - just community-rooted organizations ready to build capacity.

Stanley 1913 Creators Fund

Organization: Stanley 1913 (PMI WW Brands, LLC)

Description: A grantmaking program supporting emerging nonprofit leaders with innovative ideas to strengthen their communities. Impact 100 NYC Annual Grant

Organization: Impact 100 NYC

Description: An annual grantmaking program that awards $100,000 grants to innovative local nonprofits for transformational projects and programs. The total funding amount is determined by the number of members who contribute $1,000 each toward the grant pool. Impact 100 NYC’s goal is to support high-impact grants that reach underserved populations, highlight unmet needs in New York City, and raise the profile of lesser-known initiatives. Bee Grant Program

Organization: Whole Foods Market Foundation, in partnership with The Bee Cause Project

Description: An annual grantmaking program supporting K-12 schools and nonprofit organizations to launch new or enhance existing educational beekeeping programs. The program transforms classrooms, schoolyards, and community gardens into hands-on learning environments dedicated to pollinator education and conservation. Since the program's inception, Whole Foods Market Foundation has partnered with The Bee Cause Project to award 1,275 educational beehives, investing over $2.2 million and reaching more than 1.6 million students with meaningful pollinator programming. In 2026, the foundation awarded 168 Bee Grants totaling over $371,000 to schools and nonprofit organizations across the United States and Canada, impacting over 80,000 students.

Quadratec Cares “Energize the Environment” Grant Program

Organization: Quadratec Cares (Quadratec, Inc., leading aftermarket supplier for 4x4 vehicles including Jeeps)

Description: An environmental grantmaking program supporting individuals, community groups, and organizations across the United States pursuing projects designed to benefit the environment. Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation Funding

Organization: Draper Richards Kaplan (DRK) Foundation

Black Migrant Community Power Fund

Organization: Housed at Four Freedoms Fund

Description: A community-led, trust-based grantmaking fund supporting grassroots organizations on the frontlines of immigrant and racial justice across the United States, with a specific focus on Black migrant communities. The fund provides general operating support grants to organizations working at the intersection of racial and immigrant justice. Walmart.org Strengthening Community

Organization: Walmart.org (The Walmart Foundation)

Description: Walmart.org supports nonprofit organizations working in alignment with their four philanthropic priorities: Creating Opportunity, Advancing Sustainability, Strengthening Community, and the Center for Racial Equity. Within the United States, they primarily fund organizations recognized as public charities listed in the IRS Current State Master File, as well as public charity equivalents such as units of government, faith-based organizations serving the community, and schools. International organizations must demonstrate equivalency to a U.S. public charity or be subject to expenditure responsibility. Organizations may apply to multiple programs simultaneously if they meet each program’s eligibility criteria. Walmart.org does not award grants to individuals—only financial grants through their online applications.

NASA Teams Engaging Affiliated Museums and Informal Institutions (TEAM II)

Organization: NASA Office of STEM Engagement (Next Gen STEM project)

Description: A congressionally authorized competitive award program supporting non-profit museums, planetariums, libraries, and youth-serving organizations to propose NASA mission-inspired STEM projects for K-12 students and their learning support systems of families and educators. Work Progress Program (WPP)

Description:

WPP funds Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to cover wages and stipends for paid work experiences and career exploration for low-income young adults ages 16–24, particularly opportunity youth who are out of school and out of work, NYCHA residents, LGBTQI+ youth, youth with disabilities, and runaway/homeless/in-shelter youth. Programs typically run 12 weeks and combine short-term internships or training with wrap-around support services. Before getting into the grant opportunities, we have an organization spotlight: Last month, we coordinated a volunteer day at Part of the Solution (POTS), an organization in the Bronx that provides case management, legal, and other services, prioritizing dignity in its support for those in need. Our group helped serve over 400 neighbors across the community dining hall experience and takeout. After our service, we toured the facilities and learned all about the services POTS provides, including access to mail, showers, and haircuts. Operating in the Bronx since 1982, POTS centers dignity in its approach to its services and has built strong community trust. Thank you to everyone who joined!

People-First AI Fund

Description: Unrestricted grants for U.S. community-rooted nonprofits curious about how artificial intelligence can strengthen the work they already do — no prior AI experience or use of OpenAI tools required. The fund prioritizes three types of organizations: those connecting people to critical services such as legal aid, public benefits navigation, and food access; community arts and cultural organizations; and local journalism outlets. Maternal & Infant Health Grant

Inspire Awards Year 4 — AI & Career Pathways Challenge

Organization/Institution: Truist Foundation, hosted on the MIT Solve platform

Description: Capacity-building grants for nonprofit organizations providing innovative direct services, training programs, and career navigation support for adult workers navigating rapid technological change in the era of AI. The program awards more than $1,000,000 in total grants and in-kind services through a tiered structure: 15 semifinalists each receive $10,000; six finalists compete for $250,000 (first place), $150,000 (second place), and four runners-up prizes of $25,000; plus a $75,000 Community Choice Award. All finalists also receive in-person leadership training at the Truist Leadership Institute, one-on-one coaching, and access to the annual Solve at MIT event. This is the fourth year of the program.

Eligible activities include time-sensitive advocacy and organizing efforts that protect nutritional safety net programs, such as travel funds for community leaders to attend a newly organized day of action on a pressing anti-hunger issue. The proposal must respond to something genuinely unexpected and time-sensitive, with a clear, realistic, and immediate impact. Description: Local cash grants awarded directly from individual Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Distribution Center facilities to nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations, and government entities serving the same community as the facility. Fellowship Claude Corps — Host a Fellow

Description: A fully funded, 12-month paid fellowship that places early-career, AI-trained talent inside mission-driven nonprofits across the U.S. Fellows work full-time, in-person, on operational or programmatic projects — from workforce development and public health to housing, food security, veterans services, and education. Host organizations receive a fellow whose salary and benefits are fully covered by Anthropic, plus a one-time $10,000 implementation grant and up to $2,500 in Claude licenses and API credits per fellow. Hosts can bring on up to four fellows. Anthropic is committing an initial $150 million to the program, with a goal of placing 1,000 fellows across three cohorts.

Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund (CCNSF)

Organization/Institution: Hispanic Federation, New York Urban League, Coalition for Asian American Children and Families & Asian American Federation — funded by the NYC Council

Description: Capacity-building grants for Black, Latino, and Asian-led nonprofit organizations across New York City’s five boroughs. Funding supports one of seven organizational development areas: management information systems, financial management and planning, evaluation and outcomes systems, board development and governance, fundraising capacity, strategic planning, and strategic alliances. Over 600 capacity-building projects have been supported to date. Round 10 is now closed — Round 11 is expected to open in fall 2026. Nuestra Herencia Grant Program

Organization/Institution: Latinos in Heritage Conservation (LHC) — funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Description: The only national grant fund dedicated exclusively to Latinx heritage and historic preservation in the United States and Puerto Rico, with $600,000 in annual funding. Four categories are available: Capital Projects ($50,000–$100,000) for physical preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of significant Latinx historic and cultural sites; Project Planning ($10,000–$40,000) for technical and feasibility documents; Building Organizational Strength ($15,000–$25,000) for capacity-building in board training, fundraising, and grant writing; and Community Interpretation & Engagement ($5,000–$20,000) for public history programming and place-based storytelling. Application materials and webinars are available in both English and Spanish. Organizations in the U.S. Borderlands region (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah) receive special priority.

Community Protection Fund

Description: Grants for grassroots nonprofits rooted in Latino and immigrant communities, supporting ICE accountability, rapid legal response, immigrant family protection, emergency assistance, and community organizing. LCF announced its second round of $350,000 in grants on June 4, 2026, bringing the fund’s total grantmaking to $600,000 across 16 organizations in five states. Social Service, Education, Health & Culture Grants

Organization/Institution: The Hearst Foundations

Description: The Hearst Foundations fund direct-service nonprofits tackling chronic poverty and strengthening families across four areas: Social Service, Education, Health, and Culture. In Social Service, the Foundations prioritize programs with proven success in facilitating economic independence, with preference given to affordable housing, domestic violence services, food banks, job creation and training, legal services for those in need, prison education and reentry programs, and youth development. Program, capital, and general operating support are all eligible. The Foundations fund approximately 25% of all requests received, 20% of which goes to new grantees. Organization/Institution: Association for a Better New York (ABNY) — a civic coalition bringing together business, government, and nonprofit leaders to strengthen quality of life across New York City’s five boroughs.

Description: Awards $10,000 grants to small and mid-size nonprofits (50 employees or fewer) providing direct services across the five boroughs. The 2026 cycle prioritizes two areas:

• Economic Opportunity — career training programs with tangible skills or accreditation outcomes, and support for small businesses, entrepreneurship, and vibrant commercial districts

• Civic Engagement — initiatives that remove barriers to civic participation, foster civic literacy and dialogue, and cultivate the next generation of civic leaders

In addition to the $10,000 award, grantees receive free access to select ABNY member events, including ABNY’s signature Power Breakfasts, ABNY Talks, and the annual Spirit of ABNY Awards reception. Grantees are eligible for a maximum of three consecutive awards; organizations that have received three consecutive awards must wait one year before reapplying. For-profit organizations are not eligible.

Office of Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal Manhattan Community Flash Grant

Organization/Institution: Office of Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal — the elected office representing Manhattan’s communities in New York City government.

Description: Offers grants of up to $20,000 (most averaging $3,000–$9,000, with no minimum) to nonprofits serving Manhattan. This is a reimbursable grant: organizations must first incur the expense and then request reimbursement with full documentation. Funds must be used for programmatic expenses only; staff salaries, fringe benefits, fundraising, and political activities are not eligible. All programming and expenditures must be completed and paid by June 27, 2026. Cash transactions are not accepted — all payments must come from organizational bank accounts.

Bank of America Charitable Foundation Neighborhood Builders Program

Organization/Institution: Bank of America Charitable Foundation — the philanthropic arm of Bank of America, committed to advancing economic mobility and community development across the United States.

Description: One of the nation’s largest nonprofit leadership development programs, the Neighborhood Builders® Program awards $200,000 in general operating support over two years to high-impact nonprofits, paired with comprehensive leadership training for both the executive director and an emerging leader, and access to a national network of nonprofit peers. Since 2004, the program has invested more than $300 million in nearly 2,000 nonprofits across the U.S. Priority areas include basic needs, income creation, stable housing, and community empowerment.

Proteus Fund RISE Together Fund (RTF) Small Grants Fund — 2026 Open Call

Organization/Institution: Proteus Fund — RISE Together Fund (RTF)

Description: General operating grants of up to $25,000 (historical average: $20,000) for U.S.-based 501(c)(3) organizations or fiscally sponsored projects that support Black, African, Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (BAMEMSA) communities. RTF prioritizes organizations that build community power and are deeply rooted in BAMEMSA movements. Limited funding may be available for requests above $25,000. RTF has an approximate budget of $700,000 for this cycle, reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are depleted.

Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) Arts Fund — 2026 Cycle (Second and Final)

Organization/Institution: Asian American Arts Alliance (A4) — a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting Asian American and Pacific Islander arts and culture organizations, in partnership with The Wallace Foundation and the National Arts Regranting Partners.

Description: The second and final cycle of the A4 Arts Fund provides unrestricted general operating support to AAPI arts and culture organizations with annual operating budgets under $500,000. A total of $500,000 will be distributed, with grant amounts determined by organizational budget size:

• $10,000 — for organizations with annual budgets of $100,000 and under (approximately 14–17 awards expected)

• $15,000 — for organizations with annual budgets between $100,001 and $499,999 (approximately 22–24 awards expected)

Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP), in partnership with Newman’s Own Foundation and Novo Nordisk Indigenous Tomorrows Fund — 2026 Cycle

Organization/Institution: Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP), in partnership with Newman’s Own Foundation and Novo Nordisk — a national network committed to advancing Indigenous-led philanthropy and community self-determination.

Description: A participatory grantmaking initiative in which all award decisions are made by Native youth. In its second year, ITF will distribute a total of $1,650,000 to Native-led and Native-serving organizations across the U.S. and its territories. Grants support projects that strengthen youth thriving in Indigenous communities across five youth-named impact areas: cultural infrastructure and language; intergenerational knowledge and relationships; healing and holistic wellbeing; Indigenous foodways, lands, and waters; and power-building and civic leadership.

Applicants identify which of three organizational archetypes best describes their work and grant awards are structured across three tiers based on organizational growth stage:

• Seed — $25,000 for newly planted, community-embedded organizations

• Sustain — $65,000 for rooted organizations communities already rely on

• Synergize — $100,000 for organizations moving community systems at scale

Citizens Committee for New York City (CitizensNYC) Community Leaders & Neighborhood Business Grants

Organization/Institution: Citizens Committee for New York City (CitizensNYC) — one of New York’s oldest microgranting organizations, with 50 years of funding and supporting everyday New Yorkers working to improve their communities across all five boroughs.

Description: CitizensNYC offers two primary funding streams of up to $5,000 each, plus two additional programs for established grantees:

• Community Leaders Grants — up to $5,000 for projects that bring New Yorkers together to improve neighborhood life, strengthen local leadership, and scale community partnerships. Supports a wide range of projects across arts and culture, education and youth, environment and climate, health and wellness, economic development, and public safety. Open to nonprofits or grassroots volunteer groups based in one of the five boroughs, with an organizational budget under $250,000 and at least two volunteers.

• Neighborhood Business Grants — up to $5,000 for initiatives local small businesses undertake to positively impact their community. Open to businesses based in one of the five boroughs that have been operating for at least two years, have 10 or fewer employees, are profit-generating, and are not part of a franchise.

• Collaborative Impact Grants — up to $12,000 for projects involving multiple CitizensNYC grantee partners working together across issues and sectors. Available exclusively to existing CitizensNYC grantee network members.

• Elliott Fellowships — $15,000 one-year fellowships for leaders who have outgrown the standard grant eligibility threshold but remain rooted in grassroots work. Fellows mentor new grantees and co-lead workshops within the CitizensNYC network.

DIV Fund — Development Innovation Ventures

Organization/Institution: DIV Fund — an independent nonprofit and global R&D engine for development, continuing the legacy of USAID’s Development Innovation Ventures program.

Description: Funding for scalable, cost-effective innovations with the potential to improve millions of lives in low- and middle-income countries. The fund uses a tiered model that calibrates funding and evidence requirements to each stage of innovation readiness. All grants are non-dilutive and milestone-based; funding is not general operating support. Three funding stages:

• Stage 1: Pilot — up to $200,000 to test real-world feasibility, user demand, and impact potential of promising innovations

• Stage 2: Test & Position for Scale — up to $500,000 (up to $750,000 in compelling cases) for rigorous impact evaluations, market validation, or scale readiness assessment

• Stage 3: Scale — up to $1,500,000 to accelerate scale-up of validated innovations with demonstrated evidence of impact and cost-effectiveness

All applications are evaluated against three core criteria: evidence of impact, cost-effectiveness, and potential for durable scale (1M+ people). Open to nonprofits, social enterprises, startups, for-profit firms, universities, research institutions, and consortia. Tiger Foundation Grants

Organization/Institution: Tiger Foundation — a New York City-based private foundation founded in 1989, committed to breaking the cycle of poverty across the five boroughs by investing in outstanding nonprofit organizations.

Description: General operating support grants for proven, high-impact nonprofits delivering direct human services in New York City. Since its founding, Tiger Foundation has awarded more than $364 million to NYC organizations. Funding is organized across three portfolios:

• Family Support — supporting organizations that help families build stability, self-sufficiency, and long-term economic security

Description: Independent Sector invites researchers, nonprofit and philanthropic professionals, and sector stakeholders to submit paper proposals for the 15th Symposium on Public Policy for Nonprofits, to be held virtually on February 19, 2027. Last year’s symposium attracted nearly 1,000 registrants. The 2027 theme is “Beyond Survival: Resilience in the Charitable Sector,” exploring how nonprofits and philanthropy have responded to compounding challenges including shifts in government funding, AI technology, demographic change, and political polarization. Proposals may address:

• Major near-term and longer-term changes impacting nonprofits and philanthropy

• How nonprofits and philanthropy have responded to those challenges

• Net impact on organizations, the sector, and the communities they serve

• Effective practices and future prospects for the sector

In addition to traditional research papers, the symposium welcomes practitioner-oriented submissions such as policy analyses, program case studies, sector data analyses, and reflective essays. Organization/Institution: The Denver Foundation

Description: $20,000-$50,000 grants supporting organizations in the seven-county Metro Denver region working to reduce disparities by incorporating community and constituent leadership and racial equity. Focus areas:

• Economic opportunity - community wealth building and workforce development

• Environment and climate - air quality, energy efficiency, renewable energy

• Housing - affordable housing and homelessness including temporary housing, permanent housing, and keeping residents in homes

• Youth well-being - school funding and K-12 reforms with focus on racial equity, and youth mental health.

This note captured something I have come to believe deeply: a plan is only as strong as the listening process behind it.

Over the past year at Angeles Impact Advising, I have designed and conducted interviews and focus groups with more than 100 stakeholders across four client engagements. Whether the work informs an organizational strategic plan or a specific initiative, the same pattern holds. The discussions are not a checkbox before the “real” strategy work begins. They are the strategy work.

Gathering meaningful insights, though, requires an intentional approach that deeply respects people’s time. A few practices have proven essential:

1. Design the protocol with as much rigor as the plan itself. The interview or focus group protocol is a crucial early deliverable, not an afterthought. It is where you align with your client on how to frame the need, the purpose, and the exact questions worth asking.

2. Create clarity before the first question. The most important moment of any interview happens before it begins. I always frame my role, what I am specifically trying to learn, and how the participant’s insights connect to the broader project. I am also explicit about how comments will or will not be attributed, and I leave room for participants to ask their own questions about the process.

3. Design for tension and vision. That upfront clarity removes the guesswork and opens a trusting space for stakeholders to dive into the two things that matter most: what they are currently wrestling with, and what they see as the path forward.

When this process works, you can see the fingerprints of stakeholder input in the final plan. EdTrust-New York’s recently released 2026–2029 Strategic Plan is a clear example.

The plan’s three pillars - rapid response, addressing structural inequities, and translating policy wins into tangible change - were shaped directly by what we heard from interviews with more than 18 leaders across the state, from the Governor’s office and NYSED to legislative staff, philanthropic partners, and regional community organizations. The plan’s commitment to deepen relationships in Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, and to formalize community-led policy through expanded Student and Parent Labs, traces back to the voices of leaders who shared what was needed in the current advocacy ecosystem.

Seeing intentional listening translate into a clear, ambitious, and grounded vision that drives results is rewarding and the exact standard I aim to meet for every organization I support.

These same qualitative methods also show up in my teaching. Last week, my three graduate student teams presented their final deliverables to their client organizations, grounding their recommendations in the stakeholder research they conducted over the year. Watching the next generation of social sector leaders apply these methods with care has been a highlight.

I regularly share upcoming grant funding opportunities for the social sector. A few of the most recent:

The Revival of WCG

First, a shoutout to the current NYU WCG Executive Board. After lying dormant for the past few years, current students have revived WCG to actively support NYU Wagner students by hosting several initiatives: firm informational sessions, career panels, case workshops, an extensive bootcamp series, and both formal and informal networking. They operate under the core belief that the skill sets essential to consulting are translatable and desirable to all NYU Wagner students, regardless of industry (e.g., Nonprofit, Health, or Government).

I am energized to see this level of initiative from students.

The “Speed Networking” Experience

Alumni speakers had designated tables, while small groups of students rotated every 10 to 15 minutes organically. It was a conversational gathering. The students asked fantastic questions that forced me to distill what it means to be an independent consultant. Three themes dominated our chats:

• “What kinds of clients do you serve?”

  I shared my stories of impact with various client types across higher education, nonprofits, and government, and how I partner with organizations and fellow consultants where my expertise and relationships can drive results.

• “How do you actually find your clients?”

  Business development can be intimidating when you’re starting. We discussed how finding clients is entirely about relationship-building, leveraging your existing network, and turning past successes into future referrals.

• “Why did you decide to launch your own practice?”

  I walked them through my decision to launch my own consultancy full-time and my vision for its future. We talked about the deep satisfaction in creation, collaboration, leveraging a diverse skillset, and building a business from the ground up.

Final Thoughts

The hour flew by, and it is clear these students have a lot to contribute to the field of public service as potential consultants and beyond. To the students I met: thank you for the great questions—keep up the momentum.

Total corpus of $2 million USD available; grants typically range from $75,000 to $500,000 (average $230,400). A special thematic window is open for AI-powered mental health innovations in low-resource settings, particularly outside clinical settings and involving a human in the care loop. Grant: RRF Knowledge Sharing & Awareness Raising Grant

Organization/Institution: RRF Foundation for Aging

Description: Supports nonprofit projects that convey meaningful information, shape narratives, and drive positive change related to aging across five priority areas: age equity, caregiving, economic security, housing, and social connection.

• Of particular interest are projects that establish learning communities for professionals in aging-related fields, disseminate models and tools that improve quality of life for older adults and caregivers, build awareness campaigns for diverse stakeholders, and engage journalists and non-traditional partners to reach the general public.

• Projects must have a national U.S. reach or a regional reach within Illinois.

Application Closes: May 1, 2026 (LOI deadline; invited applicants have up to one year to submit a full proposal).

Eligibility and Conditions: Must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Project must focus on people age 60+, be based in the U.S., and have national or Illinois-regional reach. RRF does not fund general operating expenses, lobbying, biomedical research, capital projects, or standalone conferences/publications. Grant: The Elevate Prize (2027 edition)

Organization/Institution: The Elevate Prize Foundation

Description: Annual prize awarding $300,000 in unrestricted, trust-based funding ($250,000 to the organization + $50,000 to the individual leader) plus a two-year tailored support program to social impact leaders ready to scale.

• The program includes strategic support in media visibility, narrative development, brand building, public speaking, and organizational development.

• Winners also gain access to a global alumni network of changemakers.

• Organizations with annual budgets between $2M–$10M have historically seen the greatest success, though organizations outside this range are considered.

Application Closes: May 8, 2026 (nominations for the 2027 cohort)

Eligibility and Conditions: Open globally. Applicants must be 18+ and hold a leadership role (Founder, CEO, Executive Director, or equivalent) at a legally registered nonprofit (or international equivalent of a 501(c)(3)). Organizations must have the capacity to receive philanthropic funding and implement programs with measurable impact. Anyone can submit a nomination; nominated candidates are then invited to complete a full application as part of a multi-stage selection process. Full guidelines here.

Grant: Brooklyn Org Spark Prize

Organization/Institution: Brooklyn Org (Brooklyn Community Foundation) Description: Annual prize awarding $100,000 in unrestricted general operating support to five Brooklyn-based nonprofits. Named for and informed by Brooklyn Org’s mission to spark change for a fair and just Brooklyn. Applications are assessed on three criteria: Born in Brooklyn, Commitment to Equity, and Vision for the Future.

• The 20 finalists are also featured in the Brooklyn Gives end-of-year fundraising campaign, with Brooklyn Org matching up to $5,000 per organization in funds raised during that period.

• Winners are engaged throughout their prize year in media, events, and community activities.

Application Closes: May 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM (for the 2027 prize cycle; winners announced January 2027)

Eligibility and Conditions: Must serve people and communities of Brooklyn; be in operation for more than five years; have a minimum organizational budget of $200,000 for the most recent fiscal year; hold a 501(c)(3) designation or fiscal sponsorship MOU; and have an active governing body. Grant: Disability Inclusion Fund (DIF) Collaborative Grant

Organization/Institution: Borealis Philanthropy – Disability Inclusion Fund Description: Two-year collaborative grants of up to $75,000/year ($150,000 total) for cross-movement partnerships advancing disability justice.

• Requires a joint proposal from two or more organizations led by and for disabled people.

• Priority is given to organizations rooted in BIPOC, queer, gender nonconforming, and women-led disability justice work.

• Funded work may include community organizing, mutual aid, advocacy, policy change, narrative change, and cultural/arts strategies that dismantle ableism.

• Emphasizes intersectionality and cross-movement solidarity (e.g., racial justice, climate, immigration, labor, and queer liberation movements).

Eligibility and Conditions: All organizations must be U.S.-based 501(c)(3)s or fiscally sponsored. The combined annual budget of all collaborating organizations must be under $3 million. • Stage 2 – Test & Position for Scale (up to $500,000, or up to $750,000 in exceptional cases) to determine measurable impact and path to growth

• Stage 3 – Scale (up to $1.5M) to accelerate validated innovations. Grants are milestone-based and may last up to five years.

• Does not provide general operating support — funding must be tied to generating new evidence and unlocking scale.

Description: Fellowship supporting emerging Native filmmakers to produce short films (40 minutes or less) in any genre — documentary, drama, experimental, or animation — on topics related to Native cultures, histories, contemporary life, environmental and social justice, or Native empowerment. Provides up to $25,000 in production funding plus a separately paid $5,000 mentor honorarium. Filmmakers must identify their own professional mentor (Native or non-Native) prior to applying. • Know your “why” - Reflect on your personal connection to the cause and why the work matters to you. Authentic motivation sustains engagement through challenges.

• Time, Talent, and Treasure - Understand the different ways you can contribute to the organization’s mission. Board service isn’t one-size-fits-all; clarify what you’re uniquely positioned to offer.

• Align Expectations - Make sure what you’re seeking from the experience matches what the nonprofit actually needs from board members. Consider where the organization is in its trajectory—a startup, an established organization, or one in transition—as this shapes board responsibilities significantly.

• Do Your Due Diligence - Review public materials like annual reports, financial statements, and strategic plans. Talk to current board members to understand the organization’s real-time needs, culture, and governance approach.

At the NYC Reads Together Literacy Ecosystem Summit, it was shared that when we teach a child to read, we do more than teach a skill; we open a world to them. I couldn’t agree more.

We heard from SUNY Chancellor John King, NYC Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels, and DYCD Commissioner Sandra Escamilla, who all shared their personal connections with literacy and reinforced that reading success doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

Key takeaways from the keynote and breakout sessions included:

• The “Mississippi Miracle” wasn’t a miracle - Mississippi’s dramatic improvement in student reading scores resulted from systemic policy changes. NYC aims to apply that same rigor by embedding the Science of Reading in our schools and building the ecosystem outside the classroom to sustain it. This effort will require approaching literacy improvement like a marathon, not a sprint.

• Childcare is early education - Expanding childcare is vital, and we must recognize it as an essential extension of early literacy, not just supervision.

• Universal literacy takes a village - Achieving it demands sustained public investment, shared accountability across community partners, and innovations that strengthen school-family relationships.

It was wonderful to see familiar faces in the room engaged in this critical work. In my role at Angeles Impact Advising, I am currently advising a New York City neighborhood-based literacy initiative that champions a love of reading among young students and families. We’re working together to develop the strategic vision for the initiative’s future. The Summit reinforced the importance of focusing on literacy as both a civic commitment and a fundamental right.

Here are a few pieces of history I took away from my visit:

• A Hidden Reality - New York had the second-largest population of enslaved Africans in the nation after Charleston, South Carolina.

• The Rediscovery - The burial ground was only rediscovered in 1991 during the construction of a federal office building at 290 Broadway.

• The Mobilization - The site’s preservation is a testament to the power of civic action. Scholars and activists successfully lobbied to protect it, with Howard University stepping in to conduct critical scientific and historical research on over 400 skeletal remains. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993 and a national monument in 2006.

This site stands as both a memorial and a reminder that meaningful change requires sustained advocacy and community mobilization, values that continue to guide our work today.

• Invests in organizations taking a creative approach to putting mission into action and prioritizing the development of unique projects or operations that effectively achieve meaningful goals. An ideal grant recipient creates outputs or serves the community in an innovative way that sets them apart from other organizations.

On National Caregivers Day, the Bronx Children’s Museum (BxCM) hosted an Executive Budget Overview presented by NYS Office of Children and Family Services Commissioner, Dr. DaMia Harris-Madden, in partnership with the Office of the Governor and Grand Street Settlement. It was an important conversation about investing in New York families and children. The discussion highlighted investments in youth mental health and psychological safety, support for runaway youth, increasing awareness and prevention of human trafficking, expanding support and community-building for first-time fathers, compensation needs for the childcare workforce, and supporting children with special needs.

BxCM, a space built on the spirit of care and community, was founded in 2005. BxCM is a multicultural, Bronx-inspired children’s museum geared toward children from infancy through fourth grade, celebrating the natural curiosity, creativity, and compassion inherent in all children. In September 2025, the Bronx Children’s Museum made history by becoming part of NYC’s Cultural Institutions Group. It is the first Bronx institution to do so in nearly 50 years.

Special congratulations to Denise Adusei, as this also marked her third anniversary as Executive Director of the Bronx Children’s Museum. Her leadership continues to make the Bronx a place where children and families thrive.
