Lying hurt. Walking hurt, too, but it was simply the least bad option.

After losing function in my right leg and spending nearly two years unable to sit comfortably, I became surprisingly good at adapting. I learned which places were walkable and where the high-top tables were at nearby cafés. I learned how to structure my days around what my body could tolerate. Looking back, I don’t know how I got through it. But here we are.

Travel became difficult, too. Driving hurt. Flying hurt. Even getting to the airport was impossible.

So I kept walking.

And when somewhere was a little too far to walk, I took the bus.

The bus wasn’t a compromise. It gave me freedom. It expanded my world. I could stand if I needed to, work on my phone, look out the window, and watch a place unfold instead of concentrating on getting through it. Over time, adaptation became preference.

Even now, years later, I still choose places where I can walk almost everywhere. I still build my life around proximity and movement.

What I sometimes forget is how many of those adaptations are still part of my life.

Every now and then, I find myself glancing up, seeing the bus approaching, and realizing I’m going to have to pick up the pace.

Anna, how are we here again?

How can you still be one or two minutes late?

To be fair, I’m just as capable of arriving absurdly early. It’s probably fifty-fifty.

The funny thing is that I’m usually busy being annoyed with myself that I miss the more interesting observation.

I’m running.

There was a time when I genuinely believed I might never do that again.

I remember the period when I could move only slightly faster than a walk. I could almost get into a light jog, but there wasn’t much there. I was simply not physically able to move forward in space fast enough.

I remember thinking about all the ordinary things that suddenly disappeared from my world. Running toward something or, more importantly, away from something.

In a fight-or-flight situation, I’d go flight. Without that option, I felt vulnerable.

Those thoughts were primal. They were the kinds of calculations you make when your body changes and you’re trying to understand what your world looks like now.

A few weeks ago in Mallorca, I left the house a little later than I’d intended, saw the bus approaching, and broke into a run.

I made it onto the bus slightly out of breath.

Standing there, it hit me.

I hadn’t been thinking about recovery. I’d been thinking about being late.

Years earlier, I remember thinking, I just want to be able to run for the bus again.

It seemed like such a small thing to wish for.

Now I was standing on the bus, and the thought hadn’t crossed my mind until afterward.

The thing I’d wished for had become ordinary enough that I was more concerned with my own questionable time management.

x Anna

Field Notes: Esporles

On inhabiting time slowly enough for thought to stretch out and settle.

Anna Bek

Walking through Esporles in the late evening, I found myself asking why certain places make us want to linger.

The cyclists were making their usual pass through town, moving steadily beneath the tall trees that line the road. The 202 bus pulled to its stop as a woman waved it on so she could cross. A few backpackers sat outside the hostel terrace, hiking poles leaning against their chairs after a day in the Tramuntana. The fruit stands were still open, tomatoes from Mallorca arranged in neat rows, the turban-wrapped man stacking cut watermelons. The square was beginning to fill for dinner as the light softened against the mountain where the statue of Jesus watches over the town.

There is a particular quality to the air here at this hour.

Even with summer creeping in, there is still a softness to the day. A dryness that carries none of the heaviness of full heat. It makes you want to stay outside longer. To keep walking. To let the evening stretch.

As I walked, I kept returning to the same question.

What is it that holds us in certain places?

It would be easy to call it beauty.

Esporles is beautiful. The mountain views, the winding streets, the dappled evening light, the river lined with nasturtium.

Still, beauty doesn’t fully explain attachment.
<div No expectation to attend, network, optimize, curate, keep pace, or turn each day into something worth accounting for.

No ambient hum asking anything more of you.

So much of life now carries an invisible choreography. Even in beautiful places there is often a low current of orientation running beneath the surface. What should be replied to. What should be attended. What else could be explored. What remains unfinished. What version of yourself is being made visible.

That kind of tracking consumes more perceptual energy than we realize.

Attention narrows around maintenance.

Around responding, calibrating, and positioning.

Around the subtle labor of keeping ourselves legible.

Esporles asks almost nothing of me. Here, I return to the woman who fell in love with the Balearics through simply living inside them.

I have no car here. My days unfold on foot, by bus, by trail.

I live on the top floor of an old house I have come to think of as the castle. Below, Tomeu works in the garden in his little cap and shorts, tending to tools, fixing the pool, moving through the ordinary rituals of care. Maria plants flowers with the patience of repetition. We exchange small conversations in Spanish, and they tell me which trees produced a jam they want to give me, saying it was the last one before the tree se murió.

The garden is full of lemon trees, orange trees, mint, rosemary, a cherry tree, flowering corners catching late afternoon light.

Above it all, the apartment opens to the mountains.

The windows stay open. Wind moves through the rooms. Light shifts across the walls throughout the day. The terrace offers long views that pull the eye outward.

I’ve come to love the ritual of descending the forty steps through the bougainvillea-lined archway, passing through the garden into the town, onto the trail, or toward the bus.

These details shape more than atmosphere.

They shape attention.

A room with moving air carries a different kind of thought than a sealed one. Windows opening toward distance alter the internal sense of space.

Place is always participating in perception.

Some environments tighten us.

Others loosen the grip.

Here, attention expands into something less effortful.

There is no pretension here.

That may be what feels so rare.

A life unfolding without spectacle.

A place that does not ask to be maximized.

Just the accumulation of ordinary details, becoming luminous through repetition.

Maybe that is what draws us back to certain places.

They offer a way of inhabiting time slowly enough for thought to stretch out and settle.

x Anna

Cognitive Load

Tall Poppies 02 // On fragmented attention, the adaptability tax, and protecting perceptual depth.

Anna Bek

Many people have become so accustomed to fragmented attention that uninterrupted thought now feels unfamiliar.

Our minds are constantly pulled outward by messages, logistics, social media, open tabs, and the continuous unfinished to-dos that sit in the background all day long. After a while, attention stops settling deeply into anything at all.

Wintering has made it easier for me to see. When stimulation drops, when sleep increases, when the pace slows, something becomes visible that is usually hard to notice: how much of my cognitive life had become divided.

In the stillness, what returned first was continuity.

Thoughts lasted longer. Ideas could be followed through completely. My nervous system stopped orienting itself around constant stimulation and interruption.

And that reveals something larger. Modern life consumes perceptual energy through maintenance, responsiveness, and continual recalibration. Most people are carrying more than they realize, often without noticing the cognitive cost.

The more complex life becomes, the more invisible weight it creates. Platforms, subscriptions, schedules, administrative tasks, social obligations, messages waiting to be answered, decisions that never quite leave the mind. Attention gets spent before it ever gets used.

Too much maintenance has a psychological cost.

Too many open loops eventually begin pulling at the mind in ways that are difficult to notice until the system slows down enough to feel the contrast.

I’ve been grateful to travel deeply and spend long stretches of time inside different cultures and homes around the world, but there is also an adaptability tax to constantly recalibrating yourself to new places, new expectations, new routines, and new emotional climates. The nervous system absorbs all of it, especially once someone becomes highly skilled at adaptation. I’m starting to understand that more clearly now, too.

And when the season shifts, the contrast becomes easier to feel. People often realize they want more room around their attention and more continuity in their lives.

Of course, the pull of stimulation is strong. Even people who say they want slowness, simplicity, spaciousness, and peace often reach for activity the moment things become still. The impulse runs deep.

Modern life overstimulates people while gradually weakening their ability to remain fully present with themselves. The threshold keeps moving. More stimulation becomes necessary to feel engaged, emotionally activated, interested, or even fully awake to life. Eventually, quieter forms of perception become harder to access.

That is part of why so many people feel exhausted right now, even when they appear highly functional from the outside. The nervous system rarely gets a chance to stop orienting itself around interruption.

What may be needed now is less optimization and more protection around the conditions that make deeper perception possible. More uninterrupted thought and more space around attention.

Those conditions are harder to find than they used to be.

And increasingly, they feel worth protecting.

x Anna

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Menorca, Spain. 2026.

I have been sleeping 8-10 hours a night.

Not once. Not accidentally. But consistently.

For most of my adult life, six to seven hours felt normal. Functional…even excessive sometimes.

There was always movement waiting on the other side of waking.

Flights, sunrise shoots, coffee meetings, workouts, conversations, producing, travel days, social energy, new environments, deadlines, new ideas arriving faster than I could finish the previous ones.

I thought that was vitality.

Now I’m less certain.

Only weeks ago, I was running through fields beneath the tall poppies in shorts and sunlight.

Now the rain sits outside for days at a time.

Layers, blankets, and genmaicha (toasted brown rice & green tea) constantly brewing somewhere in the house.

The past weeks have felt monastic in a way I wasn’t expecting.

Long stretches indoors, writing for hours, hardly seeing anyone, barely registering the outside world. Very little external stimulation. The days have become strangely simple.

And my body has responded immediately.

I sleep deeply now. Easily. Like something finally stopped bracing.

What’s becoming increasingly obvious to me is how many high-functioning people are running on stimulation instead of restoration.

Novelty disguises exhaustion incredibly well.

But so do travel, ambition, and even social momentum.

The body can remain mobilized for years when enough dopamine, pressure, movement, uncertainty, and anticipation keep cycling through.

Then the environment softens as the noise fades out and suddenly the body reveals how tired it actually was.

What fascinates me is that the clarity came alongside the rest.

I expected stillness to feel dull. I didn’t expect rest to sharpen perception even when some days were spent doing absolutely nothing.

Instead, my attention has become more concentrated…

Less scattered across twenty open tabs of life.

I’ve spent so much of my life moving through different countries, different seasons, and different identities required by different rooms.

For years, movement itself felt alive to me.

But lately, revelation has been happening in near stillness.

Moving from one side of the house to the other. Listening to rain. Watching the temperature shift through the windows. Sitting with thoughts long enough for them to finish themselves instead of being interrupted halfway through.

I’m also noticing something else.

As external stimulation has dropped, my awareness of my body has increased dramatically. Desire feels closer to the surface. I feel more aware of hunger, temperature, fatigue, attraction, touch, and pleasure.

A nervous system that is constantly managing movement, uncertainty, logistics, performance, deadlines, and adaptation has less capacity available for embodiment.

The body prioritizes vigilance first and receptivity later.

When the nervous system finally starts slowing down, attention shifts inward again.

I think modern life creates an unusual contradiction where people are overstimulated constantly while simultaneously becoming less sensate.

More input, less embodiment.
More consumption, less contact with themselves.

This period has felt like the opposite.

Contrast brings clarity.

Lately, the days have become very small.

Rain, writing, long sleeps, cold air through the windows.

And somewhere inside all of that, something in me has finally stopped gripping.

Let’s see. the version of the island I had known before. The airport was almost empty, the roads were quiet, there were only a few guests, and there was a spaciousness to the entire environment that I hadn’t experienced here in other seasons. It took a few days for my system to settle into that.

There’s always a delay between arriving somewhere and actually registering it. At first I was moving through the space in a functional way, unpacking, orienting, figuring out where things were, and then my attention started to land. Once it did, the level of detail available changed completely.

Wild Between is a reader-supported publication. In autumn, there were plumes of purple grass, almost like a haze, across the fields, and this time everything was smaller, more intricate, and scattered. Tiny flowers everywhere, many of them medicinal, growing without any effort, and we started looking closely at each one, identifying them, seeing their shapes, their colors, the way they grew in clusters. Tall poppies moved through the fields, sheep still carried the weight of their wool, and the landscape revealed itself through those details.

Nothing about the environment needed to change. My attention did.

At the same time, I could feel how conditioned I’ve become to input. Even in that level of stillness, there was an instinct to reach for my phone, to share what I was seeing, to translate it into something immediate, to place it somewhere else while it was still happening. That instinct runs in parallel with how I want to live and how I work.

Around the same time, I started listening to Dr. Anna Lembke’s masterclass on dopamine, and it clarified something I had already been sensing. Dopamine drives pursuit and engagement. It is part of what makes novelty feel compelling, part of what pulls us toward the next image, the next message, the next place. When that system is fed too often through easy rewards, the brain adjusts. The threshold for interest moves.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" New landscapes, unfamiliar light, different seasons, the way travel sharpens perception and makes the world feel vivid. That form of novelty has shaped my life and my work.

But there is another version of novelty that does the opposite. The cheap version. The one that keeps attention moving without deepening it. The next scroll, the next story, the next small hit of input.

It mimics discovery while hollowing out the capacity for it.

That is the friction I feel inside my own life.

My work asks me to stay with things. To look longer. To let a place become legible. To make photographs from attention rather than appetite. But the same tools I use to share the work can pull me out of the state the work requires. I can be standing in it, fully inside the scene, and part of my mind is already translating the moment into a post, a caption, a fragment of proof.

That is the part I want to interrupt.

I’m writing this now from the Tramuntana in Mallorca, and the past few days have given me another version of the same lesson. I’ve been inside while it rains, layered up near the heater, staying in town without a car, speaking very little, consuming less, letting the days become small enough for contemplation to return.

In that space, I can feel how much has been waiting.

Thoughts that needed room. Experiences that needed time. The residue of the last season. The speed of moving from one place to another. The constant translation of life into language, image, message.

Because attention is the material of my work.

Photography depends on it. Writing depends on it. Perception depends on it. The way I live depends on whether I can remain with what I am experiencing.

So I’ve been stepping back from constant input. Less social media, less ambient consumption, fewer interruptions, and more time inside a single place, watching what happens when the reflex to reach has less to attach to.

What becomes visible when the day has fewer interruptions?

That is what interests me now.

x Anna

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" Wind through the trees, animals moving slowly across the land, a rhythm that holds its own time. I thought I was coming for the encounters. Zebras, cheetahs, lions. A softer version of the wild I’ve yet to fully step into.

But when nothing is being asked of you, everything that’s been waiting begins to speak.

It comes through the wind in the leaves. Through the light catching on the peacock’s feathers outside the balcony. Through the fire at night. Through the sound of a lion somewhere up the hill.

Stillness creates a kind of vacuum.

And whatever sits unresolved finds its way in.

I’ve spent the last few months repositioning myself.

Thinking carefully about what I put out, how it lands, where it leads. Every image carrying direction. Every piece needing to strengthen the signal.

At some point, the work changed.

I felt it most clearly through the camera.

A frame stopped being a moment. It became a decision.

Every time I lift the camera now, it feels like something is being asked of me. A reason. A purpose. A function. A future.

And the weight of that question sits in my hands.

I notice it most when I’m working with form.

Earth, material, shape, the way something is held and made. I’ve always been drawn to structure. Not only buildings, but the architecture of attention, the architecture of calm, the invisible frameworks that hold a life.

And lately, I feel it turning back on me.

As though I’ve built something within myself that I now don’t know how to move through.

Because every time I go to create, there is pressure. Not from the outside. From within.

Photography was never meant to hold this much.

It was meant to fix time. To hold something that would pass. To be a gesture toward the impermanent.

A kind of memento mori. A romance with what doesn’t last.

And now it feels like something else.

It feels like evaluation.

As if every frame must justify itself. As if beauty alone is no longer enough to let something live.

There is a thought that follows me when I shoot now.

That the image will disappear into an archive. That it will go unseen. That no matter how precise the composition, how soft the light, how considered the frame, it won’t land.

And then another thought underneath that.

If it doesn’t land, what was the point?

It becomes a strange loop.

The more I see, the more I feel. The more I feel, the harder it becomes to simply look.

My eyes feel almost too sharp for the moment. Too aware of everything the image could be, instead of what it is.

And that awareness changes the experience. It turns something immediate into something measured.

There’s a sadness in that.

Because the thing that once felt like freedom now feels like responsibility.

The act of seeing becomes heavy.

And I start to wonder if this is the cost of awareness. If the same sensitivity that allows me to notice light, texture, and the smallest shifts in atmosphere is also the thing that makes it harder to stay inside it.

Out here, that question stays with me.

Moving between presence and absence.

There is beauty in front of me. There is also the awareness of everything that isn’t here.

And where my attention lands shapes the experience.

In honor of the wild between, I share that I don’t have a clean answer for this, only the recognition that something has shifted and that the work has started to carry more than itself, and I am learning what that weight feels like in my hands, in my body, and in the space between seeing something and deciding what it means.

x Anna

<a class="image-link image2 experience in Bali during Nyepi, the day of silence where the entire island shuts down. No phones, no movement, no electricity, no noise. Just a full day of being with yourself, whether you like it or not. I missed it this year, and I felt that absence more than I expected, so I tried to recreate it here.

When I reached the cottage, there were five peacocks waiting at the entrance. Three males, two females. My host pointed out the difference in their feathers, explaining mating season, how the males display, how everything becomes a kind of performance for attention and continuation. They stayed with me most of the afternoon, moving in and out of view, occupying the space in a way that felt both ordinary and slightly surreal, like I had stepped into something that didn’t belong to me.

I came here to be still, but the stillness brought everything forward.

The longer I sat, the more I started thinking about the paths my life has taken, and how far I’ve already walked in certain directions. Being here in South Africa, building something again, I can feel how much of me is rooted in other places. Bali, where I spent years shaping a life that still lives in my body. Nashville, where my family is, where another version of me exists in parallel. Ibiza, where I built a community that felt like home at the time, and has since dissolved into something I can visit only through memory. Los Angeles, my lost city of angels, where I grew into the artist and storyteller that shaped who I am today.

A life builds like that. In layers. In locations. In people. In decisions that feel right as you make them, and then carry forward in ways you only begin to understand later.

The more directions you go in, the more time passes, the more lives you end up living inside one lifetime. And with that, something else happens. The further you go down one path, the more distance grows between you and the others. The doors don’t slam. They settle. They fade. They become less accessible through repetition, through absence, through the simple fact that you are somewhere else now.

Every yes carries weight. It places your time somewhere. It feeds one direction. And in doing that, it withdraws from countless others.

That exchange happens constantly, whether you’re paying attention to it or not.

Sitting there, in a version of silence I had chosen, I found myself moving through memory almost as if it were happening in real time. Indonesia in March, the texture of those days, the way stillness used to feel when it was shared across an entire place. The rhythm of a life that once felt central, now existing alongside this one, but no longer in it.

And here I am, building again. Creating something in South Africa that asks for presence, for attention, for continuity. And I can feel the tension in that. Because to build more here means building less somewhere else. I can’t be in Bali and here at the same time. I can’t maintain every version of my life at full depth across multiple places, no matter how much I’ve tried to.

This path hasn’t unfolded through some clean, intentional arc. It has been shaped by circumstance as much as by choice. Health, environment, logistics, weather, the realities of staying in certain places over time. Mold and respiratory issues. Tropical storms. Driving through flooded roads. Immigration. The practical layers that determine where you can stay, how long you can stay, and what kind of life is actually sustainable.

That is what has led me here. Sitting in front of the fire, I can hear a lion somewhere not far off, a low, rhythmic sound that carries through the dark. There are meerkats just below the cottage. Ostriches across the way that I’ll probably walk toward tomorrow. This place is alive in a way that asks for presence, and I can feel how much I want to meet it fully.

What I have chosen, more than anything, is depth. To go into places, into people, into cultures, into ways of living that feel real. To build something that is rooted in connection, in land, in community. That has been the through line.

But that kind of depth comes with its own cost, especially when it happens across multiple places.

Because when your work is tied to land, to people, to the texture of a place, it asks for continuity. It asks for time. It asks for presence that can’t easily be divided. And every time you shift, even for good reasons, something that was building loses momentum. The threads don’t disappear, but they loosen.

With every shift, there is newness, expansion, the dopamine of discovery, the sense of possibility opening again. And at the same time, there is a closing. Something that had been building reaches a limit. The momentum changes. The version of that life settles into what it became, rather than what it could have continued to be.

I think people who move through the world with a stable structure, a job that travels with them, experience this differently. Their identity holds steady while the location changes.

But when your identity is tied to place, to the relationships you build there, to the depth of immersion, each move carries more weight. You aren’t just changing scenery. You are stepping out of one living system and into another.

I don’t know if there’s a clean way through it.

I just know that sitting there, in that brief window of stillness, I could feel the full weight of it. The life I’m building now, and all the lives that exist alongside it, each one shaped by time, attention, and the doors that have closed along the way.

x Anna

The Wild Between is a reader-supported publication. It starts being measured in transitions: getting out of bed, standing upright, sitting down, turning over, putting on shoes, crossing a room. Each shift carries consequence. Each action gets weighed. Time becomes attention, and attention becomes effort.

A morning can turn into a project.

Rolling to one side. Finding a way to stand without setting off the nerve. It edits what feels possible. It overrides language and starts making decisions from the red zone.

And still, something watches. A separate layer. A witness.

That layer rarely feels strong enough to change anything, yet it remembers that once there was a wider field of view. It remembers the sky.

Wild Between is a reader-supported publication. Survival moves to the top.

It shows up in moment-to-moment adjustments; only those who have lived it recognize. The nervous system treats physical danger and persistent inflammation the same way. It reacts. And reacts. And reacts.

Under sustained stress, the brain changes. The regions responsible for planning, imagination, and long-range thinking show reduced activity. ¹ Decisions that once took seconds now take hours.

Every choice carries weight because every choice costs energy. Booking a flight becomes unimaginable because the body has lost its ability to picture itself in transit.

The brain’s attention system begins to prioritize pain above everything else.² Pain wins the competition for focus. Curiosity fades. ³

Effort stops producing movement. Motivation thins as days blur together.

Catastrophic thinking moves in. This is neurochemistry, a physiological state.⁴

You can’t visualize your future because your system has stopped projecting one.

The very functions that support identity, hope, and becoming feel furthest away in the moments they are most needed. And still, some part of the psyche continues to search for meaning.

Chronic pain deepens this. Over time, the brain stops treating pain as a message and starts treating it as a condition. ⁵ ⁶ The signal endures. Perception, mood, attention, and time all shift to accommodate something that has lost its expiration date.

Pain is one form of constraint. Grief operates similarly. Chronic illness, extended caregiving, depression that reduces the world to what can be tolerated—the details differ, but the structure holds. ⁷

Stillness as Becoming

Becoming can look like stillness.

Becoming is the process through which identity evolves over time. Some seasons are defined by endurance. Some chapters measure growth by what it takes to hold steady. To be honest about pain. To stop forcing the old pace. To relate to life on different terms.

Some fires just burn.

Certain seasons ask for a pause on interpretation. They ask that duration be named. That experience be allowed to exist without immediate conversion into insight. That pain be given room to register without being rushed into meaning.

This is the work of honoring contraction.

The part of the arc where the nervous system asks for slower, smaller, closer—where the task becomes staying honest about what the body is actually saying, even when that honesty is inconvenient.

In these times, it becomes easier to see who depended on the appearance of wellness. Which relationships required constant strength as a condition of closeness. How much of what once looked like drive was actually momentum covering depletion.

Some lives will include visible comebacks. Others will live through winters without spring.

Dignity lives in how a person carries constraint. In how love continues when the body resists it. In how vulnerability is allowed. In how attention is chosen, even when that choice brings no visible reward.

When Perception Begins to Shift

As pain lingers, the horizon shortens. Expectation lowers as a form of self-protection. Hope begins to feel risky. Plans scale down. Imagination holds less distance.

Sometimes this narrowing is intelligence. A recalibration. Survival learns to move in smaller units of time: the hour, the afternoon, the day.

When a flare recedes, there is a small opening. Just enough to revisit the thoughts that formed inside the worst of it and ask whether they still belong outside that state.⁸

There is another task that feels almost unnatural: telling the body that what it perceives as threat is not, in fact, a threat. Sitting still while sensation spikes and refusing to interpret it as catastrophe. Relearning the difference between signal and story. Excavating the mind to loosen timelines shaped by fear. Fear of doors that closed while life moved in snail mode.

Pain tends to speak in absolutes. It loops toward worst outcomes. Over time, though, perception can recalibrate. There is often a lag between sensation changing and belief catching up.

Identity remains capable of change, even identity formed in the dark.

Versions of self form in pain. Those versions still belong. They still deserve care. They are whole drafts, written under harder conditions.

Time with pain is an opportunity to create differently.

An acknowledgment that inside constraint, choices remain—about pacing, boundaries, and which signals receive attention. Small choices that look like nothing from the outside and feel like everything from within.

When Time Keeps Its Own Pace

Some wounds resolve slowly or incompletely.

Some sensations stay. Some bodies recover along unexpected trajectories. Some relationships bend under the strain. Some mornings begin with the same ache they ended with.

Yet you are becoming.

Becoming is the willingness to remain in relationship with life—honestly, steadily, attentively—regardless of progress.

Living with pain means living without the performance of constant wellness. It means moving through a world built for speed while carrying what refuses to be hurried. It means learning how to hold a frame when a pose falls away.

Pain may teach, or it may simply reveal: edges, thresholds, the shape of love, the memories that stay close, the meanings that refuse to disappear.

Sometimes, becoming means nothing more than remaining.

The Days Without Metaphor

Some days offer no insight, no framing, no symbolism.

Just muscle spasm. The sting of inflammation. The heartbreak that stays sharp. The nervous system that struggles to stabilize. The language that slips away.

And still, a future arrives.

It may not resemble what was imagined. It still comes. And it is met, whether with softness, with ferocity, or with presence alone.

That is all that has ever been asked.

If you’ve lived through a season of constraint, whether pain, grief, caregiving, chronic illness, or the collapse of capacity, I’d be curious: what did you learn about time? About what it means to keep becoming when everything slows down?

Reply to this email or leave a comment below. New cities gave my brain something to solve, something to stretch toward. Each relocation trained responsiveness, pattern fluency, and mental flexibility. Motion taught me how to appreciate the newness of what was next. Eventually, every system asks for a different kind of attention. One that turns inward, not outward, to keep evolving.

A few weeks into staying in one city, the withdrawal surfaced. Usually this was when I was about to move onwards to a new place, to navigate a new map, a new language, a new frame. This time, I had already chosen to stay. Friction followed. I resisted it. Then illness interrupted. My back flared, and suddenly I had no choice but to stop. Pause. Stay put. Let the body speak first. What I’d been fighting became the only option available. The craving wasn’t wrong. The timing was. The days that followed were small in radius but loud in sensation—tea in hand, warmth nearby, hours of writing, very little external input. It felt like wintering while summer beat hard outside.

Turns out you can't skip the internal seasons just because you hop a plane.

Indonesia taught me the intelligence of rain. December through March and sometimes onward meant monsoon months. Some days it rained so fully that all you could do was watch it, listen to it, feel it. Everything slowed because the environment slowed. The body learned a different pacing.

Being away from Indonesia has let me see it with different eyes. What felt ordinary while I was there carries a different texture now. I didn’t realize how much the seasons held me until I was no longer in them. I miss the weather that once told me when to slow down.

Cape Town has been offering that same kind of seasonal cue. Cooler air, mist on the mountains, the ocean dulled into softer tones. My nervous system exhaled into the pause my body had been asking for.

Distance gave me perspective I couldn’t access while I was there. My attention relaxed enough to notice what I’d missed. I remembered differently. Appreciated differently. Some details grew louder in hindsight. Others softened into background. The shift wasn’t about abandoning what was. It was about finally seeing it from outside, where clarity came from a different vantage point.

Summer here is bright, loud, outward. Rain slows the attention inward. The tension between seasons is easier to feel than to solve, richer to sit inside than to move past too fast.

I don’t know how long this pause will last. I know I’m learning from it in ways motion never taught me.

Stay awake. Stay curious. Let the system catch up. Let the deeper patterns surface.

x Anna

Wild Between is a reader-supported publication. with freshly darkened hair and no map. I’d shared a taxi from the airport and followed a man pulling my suitcase on a metal cart into an alley that felt like a tunnel. Kids circled, asking if I needed help, each one insisting they knew the way. They led me deeper until the turns lost meaning. Getting shaken down in the Medina is practically a rite of passage. I didn’t know that then. I ended up in a room that hadn’t been touched since the person before me left it. Sheets creased. I slept there anyway. You can overlook a lot when adventure is the engine moving you forward.

Wild Between is a reader-supported publication. The film camera I load by hand feels like an anchor to a former version of myself. My bag still jingles with coins from past lives—rand, rupiah, ringgit, a stray Egyptian pound. I sift through them like an archaeologist tracing old selves.

The biggest shift is the glow of screens. Everywhere, men watch football on their phones, the same match erupting across speakers slightly out of sync. Others listen to guided prayers with private intensity. The Medina used to feel like uninterrupted presence. Now it carries the pulse of two realities at once: feet in the alleys, attention elsewhere.

The Medina carries two realities at once—feet in the alleys, attention elsewhere.

Guéliz dissolves into dust, exhaust, and the rawness of the old city. Cafés spill onto sidewalks. Women pass in long dresses, some veiled, some open-haired. You smell Bab Doukkala before you see it—orange peel, leather, musk, meat, and urine. A man in a wheelchair-cart moves with piston arms. Cats thread between pomegranates.

When I lived here in 2018 and 2019, leading retreats, these alleys became my classroom. The bread men baking underground. The brass workers shaping patterns with ritualistic precision. The spice sellers whispering, “Only today, my friend.” The repetition of work and gesture felt strangely regulating, as craft became its own form of prayer and the pace offered its own stability.

But long before any of that, there was the younger me hitching a ride from Taghazout through the Atlas Mountains with two Welsh surfers, high on hash, surfboards tied to the roof with a rope that shouldn’t have held. The driver took every switchback like he had something to prove. Each turn felt like it might be my last. One of them laughed and said, “Relax your shoulders, mate.” I think of that line every time I’m here.

Memory is spatial. One turn in the Medina and the past reawakens itself.

Now, when I pass the stalls, the same men still sell saffron and sandalwood. The same black hammam soap I can never remember the name of. I no longer follow them upstairs for mint tea, so sweet it hurts my teeth. Presence, I’ve learned, isn’t about saying yes to everything—it’s about choosing where to stay.

In the metalworkers’ souk, near the stretch where produce gives way to cookware just before Rahba Kedima, I see a man I photographed years ago selling tagine pots. The scene is almost unchanged: terracotta stacked in warm towers behind him, his hands moving with the same practice.

My memory places him instantly. The hippocampus maps place onto experience, so coming back here reactivates what was already written. His face is the only real marker of the passage of time. The lines around his eyes have deepened.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" For years, I moved through other people’s spaces, borrowing their light, learning the rhythm of their mornings, sleeping inside energies that were never entirely mine. I once called that freedom. Now I see it as an apprenticeship: a long lesson in what it means to build a home within when the outer ones keep shifting.

Some nights I still wander in thought, wondering where I fit. I belong in many places, yet nowhere feels permanent enough to root. Living nomadically has taught me something stillness never could: home is not geography but rhythm, a nervous system that remembers safety without proof. When every address is temporary, steadiness must be built from smaller things—rituals, breath, and the way you speak to yourself when you wake.

Wild Between is a reader-supported publication. The one who seeks, or the one who is already found? Some days I am both—the wanderer and the architect, the hand that sketches and the heart that longs to rest inside what it drew.

The story of home is never about arrival. It is about realizing you have been building all along. The question of belonging becomes the method. Home isn’t the ending; it is the lens.

“You only are free when you realize you belong no place — you belong every place — no place at all.” — Maya Angelou

The Foundations

The steadiness beneath you: values, breath, practices, the small consistencies that remind you who you are when everything else moves. Foundations are slow work, invisible to most eyes, yet everything depends on them.

The Walls

The boundaries that protect your inner structure. How you speak to yourself, how you let others speak to you, the shelter of kindness that keeps you safe when the world outside shifts.

The Windows and Doors

The ways you connect. Windows let in light; doors invite others close. They are the openings through which belonging moves. Keeping them clean means seeing clearly; keeping them unlocked means trusting life enough to let it in.

The Roof

The covering that steadies you through storms. Creativity, spirit, and resilience hold here—the assurance that even when the weather turns, there is something above you keeping you whole.

That inner home becomes your foundation and your truest anchor point. It steadies you, oriented toward your true north, and keeps you rooted even as the world changes.

When the outer world keeps moving, steadiness has to be built from the inside.

The Inner Rooms

Each of us carries many rooms inside. Some are well-lit and familiar; others wait behind closed doors. Together they form the architecture of the self.

The Living Room: Where you meet the world. It holds your warmth, your laughter, your need for shared space. Here you learn that belonging is not about performance but presence.

The Kitchen: Where transformation happens. Raw experience becomes nourishment. It is the fire of creation, the alchemy of what you take in and what you offer back.

The Bedroom: A chamber of rest and intimacy. Where you allow vulnerability, where solitude becomes renewal. How you tend this room reveals how you receive love—slowly, honestly, without defense.

The Study: The place of contemplation. Ideas stack like books, each one a window into how you see. Reflection is the architecture of meaning; curiosity keeps the air moving.

The Studio: The soul’s workshop. Here you make what only you can make—images, words, gestures, and sounds. It is the room where devotion meets expression.

The Attic: A room of memory. You store what shaped you here—keepsakes, echoes, and old versions of self. Sometimes you climb up to remember; sometimes to release.

The Basement: The foundation’s shadow. Fear, grief, and longing live here, but so does power. When you enter without turning away, you find the raw materials of strength.

The Garden: Where inside meets outside. What you cultivate here becomes your offering to the world. Beauty is proof that care has taken root.

Because Everything Is Structure

Everything is structure, whether seen or unseen, built or broken. When you have had to rebuild yourself from stillness, from paralysis, from the long silence that demanded reinvention, the metaphors of walls, corridors, scaffolding, and thresholds stop being poetic; they become true. Perception has an architecture. So does trust. So does time. So does love.

Language is its own kind of blueprint, and relationships are lived-in rooms—some echoing, some warm, some hollow, some locked. You are architecture too: of memory, of resilience, of reverence, of beauty framed through a body, through a lens, through a life redesigned from scratch.

Maybe the people who can’t enter your world simply don’t know how to read the plans, or aren’t willing to learn the codes, or aren’t attuned to the weight-bearing beams you’ve carefully laid beneath your ribcage—scaffolding that protects the heart.

It is all architecture to me, because structure is what lets beauty last. It is not only how you build; it is how you live inside what you have built.

The Architecture of Belonging

“Our worth and our belonging are not negotiated with other people. We carry those inside our hearts.” — Brené Brown

Belonging was never meant to be bargained for. It is our original state. To belong is not to be permitted, but to return. And so, we walk back toward ourselves again and again until no door can close us out.

I have learned that belonging cannot be revoked because it was never granted. It lives in the marrow, in the pulse of breath, in the steady knowing: I was always meant to be here.

Perhaps belonging is not in their hands at all. Not in the glance withheld, not in the silence, not in the dismissal. Belonging is the ground beneath me, the wind moving through me, and the inner knowing I now inhabit.

When the walls are strong enough to hold you, you can finally open the door. You stop looking for someone who will mirror every room of your being. Instead, you invite those who can walk the corridors with reverence, even if they do not have the keys to every door.

x

Anna

<a What happens when we stop outsourcing our focus and choose what we see for ourselves?

The Wild Between is a study in perception, awareness, and creative intelligence. It sits at the intersection of neuroscience and image-making: how the brain shapes what we see, and how what we see shapes who we become.

This space is also personal. It comes from the in-between, the period of rebuilding after a life that no longer fit. The time when identity shifts, place changes, and meaning has to be made in real time. The part most people do not show.

So I am writing from there. From the middle of things. From the process of forming a new way of living, seeing, and creating. The questions are still unfolding. The answers are in motion.

Here you will find essays, field notes, and visual studies. Some photographed. Some written. Some both. All guided by one idea: every frame is a choice.

For now, everything here is open and free to read.

If this feels like a space you want to inhabit with me, you can subscribe below.
<div class="image-gallery-embed" data-attrs="{"gallery":{"images":[{"type":"image/jpeg","src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6d5b0c92-3f95-470c-a57a-7af78f5bd61e_1365x2048.jpeg"},{"type":"image/jpeg","src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/358087c8-72c9-4f78-846f-4cf62ad2770b_1365x2048.jpeg"}],"caption":"Field notes from light, stillness, and the space between frames in Menorca.
