In today’s sky, there is a big party in Leo along with Mercury and Jupiter, we see our first solar eclipse in Leo of this new set.

This new moon eclipse carries classic ‘new beginning’ energy, but in a far more dramatic way. Eclipses are karmic. They deal with our evolution on a subtle and spiritual level. During this time, the transformation we experience is cellular. Almost imperceptible. So today, as we move into a new eclipse season, you may find yourself grappling with both endings and beginnings - at the same time. You may find yourself caught in the messy middle rather than on one clear cut side.

That’s alright. Eclipses are messy. They give you permission to be a little messy too, as you work to figure it all out.

With this new moon eclipse in particular, I have been contemplating the idea of ‘withdrawing the senses’ and really turning inwards. Last week, I taught a nidra meditation inspired by this idea and we journeyed inward to tend to the campfire of our hearts deepest desires. Consider that this particular lunation is so symbolic of a quiet, yet deeply heart centered awakening. Then ask yourself if it is truly possible to tune into this subtle energy, the deep soul level yearnings, if you are feeling constantly drained and distracted by the world around you. It might not be.

We must invoke some energetic discipline and redirect our attention to the quiet whispers of our heart space. Leo, after all, rules the heart.

What does withdrawing the senses actually mean?..

/giving the eyes less information to process

/simplifying and maintaining regular mealtimes

/quieting the constant sound of music, tv, podcasts etc.

What might happen or transform for you in this quiet space?

Yes, this theme also aligns with my clever attempt to let you know that I am taking another break from regularly publishing on Substack. Since returning from Hawaii, I have thrown myself back into my business at full speed. But I am not the same (highly energetic) person I was when I started my business or this substack. And so, in my own way, I am going to withdraw. I am going to reinvigorate a quieter creative practice in hopes of finding new and surprising glimmers of inspiration.

You’ll still receive notes from me in your inbox. But not with any sort of regularity. I will still be teaching and offering astro readings. I will be stepping away from social media (including the sweet seduction of substack notes). Withdrawing my attention to the little creative voices inside.

I will be clearing my desk of everything besides my pens and pages (and sweet little blue typewriter) to make space for a new practice to blossom. I feel another journal or seasonal book of some sort wanting to be written. (although don’t hold me to that)

But it’s hard to hear the voice of what wants to emerge when I am holding myself to a constant stream of output and distracted by tabs of emails, articles, and notifications.

And so, as we move into this eclipse portal (and my birthday next week!) I invite you to join me in withdrawing your attention in some way. Making space for something quiet, surprising, and new to unfold as you reclaim the potency of your awareness under this magnetic Leo sky.

The truth is we have to just start moving. There is no perfect time to start, and there is no perfect direction. There will always be a better time and a better circumstance, but if we spend our life waiting for that perfect moment…we will likely spend most of our lives waiting.

So we just start moving.

In my dance days, many choreographers would instruct us to ‘start before we were ready.’ Meaning, move your body before your mind talks you into a habit or a pattern. Surprise yourself with a big jump out of nowhere instead of spinning in the same circles you always do. I think about this often, in relation to my life now. I am one of those people who loves to ideate forever and ever, but at some point I have to make a move.

If you are feeling stuck on the edge of a big transition or in a rut with the way things are. MOVE. It doesn’t matter how, it doesn’t matter where, just move. What you may find is that by deciding to move, you start to build momentum. You can then listen to the momentum and decide “is this the right direction for me or should I pivot here?” “Do I actually like where I’m headed or would I like to change my mind?” But it’s the movement, the momentum that gets you out of your head and into action.

Within my business, I have pivoted a lot. I change my mind constantly, but I always keep moving. Some workshops are full! At some events, all I get is crickets. I use this information to help me make my next move.

This week, we have a big electric full moon in Aquarius. The cosmic flashlight is illuminating a restless and rebellious nature within us. Where are we craving to throw out the rule book and do things unconventionally? I invite you to really contemplate this with me this week.

☉ Saturn Retrograde begins in Aries on 7/26 - This is a tricky one. It’s a long transit, and it’s a subtle energy at play. You have to really tune in to feel this one. Unlike mercury retrograde (who is a little more in your face lol), Saturn retrograde operates at a low hum beneath the surface. It asks you to stick to your word and follow through on what you say you’re going to do. It’s a good habit for us to build. It’s good energetic hygiene…to follow through. Starting today through December, Saturn is going to hold you a little more accountable for your actions. He’s going to be keeping a closer eye on your sense of integrity and nudge you back into alignment if you lose your way.

☾ Moon moves - This week we see a gorgeous peak summer full moon in Aquarius on 7/29. Today’s full moon is particularly magnificent because the moon will be opposing both the sun and Jupiter at 6° of Leo. Themes from last week’s newsletter are ever present under this full moon. Leaning into radical authenticity, embracing unconventional ideas, and making space for inspiration to strike in unlikely ways.

Yesterday I welcomed four people into my space for Leo Season Flash Readings. It was fun to sit on the floor with pillows and rugs, sun pouring in on a sunny Saturday, and gush about the radiance of Leo and how each of these people can tap into Leo energy in their own unique way. A theme that came up in almost every session was the idea of giving to others from an overflowing cup rather than a depleted one. I was waiting for the bus last week, scrolling through emails, skimming newsletters, and my eyes scanned over a phrase that made me stop. “strip away the onion layers of your being.” It made me think of all the ways and reasons why we build up these protective onion layers over time. Wounding, ego, ambition, safety, desire to be accepted, etc. The onion body we carry is often layers of our external self that we show to the world around us to prove our worth.

So why would we want to peel back these layers? To return to our essential being, I think. To connect with the truest version of ourselves and invite that self to come out to play. It is often seen as our ‘inner child’, which is a good perspective but can also be hard to imagine bringing our inner-child into our adult life. So then, how do we imagine peeling the onion body and connecting to the core of who we have always been?

To be honest, I think it’s through small acts of courage and vulnerability. Peeling the onion body means allowing people to see softer, more tender parts of you…ones that live closer to the heart. Talking about things you care about, putting yourself out there in ways that feel cringy but turn out to be perhaps inspiring. It takes practice, but then you start to feel the air and light coming into your inner layers, making it easier to peel the old stories and expectations.

Last week, I biked through Brooklyn to hang posters for a new astrology offering. No one talks about how vulnerable hanging posters out and about actually is. There I am in my helmet, sweating profusely, wind blowing my posters up as I attempt to get the tape to straighten out and stick down. I was painfully aware of the looks I was receiving from the cool, chill Brooklynites sipping on their iced matchas, watching me struggle against the wind and sun to hang up my hand-drawn posters. My onion body wanting to form new layers and call it quits, returning to the safety of my air-conditioned apartment. But I persevered; I peeled those layers of embarrassment away and continued on my journey….eventually to a bodega for an ice cold lemonade…helmet still on my head.

I offer this idea of peeling the onion body to you as the sun makes its way out of the tender waters of cancer and into the spotlight of leo. Leo is the sign that wants to be seen, heard, and appreciated for what she truly is. She wants to be known for her essential nature. Leo has a great deal of courage, but she is also vulnerable as she dons her heart oh so openly on her sleeve. So before we can embrace all the magnetism and radiance that Leo has to offer, we must first be honest about the onion body we wear. The stories we tell ourselves, the beliefs that hold us back. And through the heat of this season, we must gently and proudly peel back the layers of our onion body to get closer to our true essence. That is the version that wants to shine out under the rays of this Leo sun. <3

In the Sky

☉ Sun enters Leo on 7.22 the season ruled by the sun. Leo radiates joy, love, and compassion from the center of its heart. This month, we focus on what makes us happy as a way to align with regenerative energy. Doing things that fuel us that allow us to use less energy/effort. People that make us happy, projects that light us up, places that inspire us…you can read more thoughts on Leo energy from this archived piece. One day later on 7.23 - mercury retrograde (finally) comes to an end. Although still in its shadow period, Mercury will journey forward once again, moving towards Leo, hopefully integrating all of the little lessons we’ve learned over the last few weeks. Taking them to heart so that we can embrace and embody them as we too grow and evolve.

☾ Moon moves - The moon is waxing this week. We will see a first quarter square in Libra on Tuesday asking us to check in with our capacity right now. Are we holding too much? Are we juggling too much? How can we reorient things to prioritize things that feel more aligned and ALIVE at this time.

Your invitation: This week, in addition to peeling back layers of the onion body (in honor of leo season), use the moon phases this week to push yourself. Re-work your schedule to accommodate more of what you desire. Don’t add more to the plate, but be strategic about how the plate is arranged so that maybe you find ways to fit more delicious bites on there.

My first moon centering nidra meditation + conversation was a hit! Thank you to all who came and shared space. It was really special for me to be in a new space guiding you all!

I also worked with a new sweet private yoga client this week. We worked on movement (and stillness) as a portal for emptying and refilling our energy. Releasing stagnation, clearing out the cobwebs, and inviting in more seasonally aligned fire energy into the body to support us through these yang months.

As many of you know, there is a restlessness inside me that often manifests as a need to learn more. To acquire more skills, to be constantly improving, and filling my toolbox. Although I think that aspect of myself will never fall away, I felt in myself this week a deep sense of ‘enoughness’. Instead of cramming 3 more things on my to-do list, I finish my tasks and say ‘that is enough for today’.

In a world where it feels like ‘there’s not enough time in the day’ or ‘we can never get enough done’, we create our own sense of false scarcity by constantly trying to max out our capacity.

Within my own practice and business, I am certain there is more that I could be doing. I could market myself more strategically, I could teach more classes, reach out to more clients, create more content. But I feel, for now, that it’s all perfectly enough. I’m not scrambling, I’m not rushed, I trust in the structures I am building and let that be enough.

When I started offering private yoga sessions, I took an ad out in a local services newsletter. The ad has been circulating for a few weeks now. I questioned whether it was even effective. About an hour after I questioned myself, an inquiry came through about starting private sessions… from that ad. Everything I am doing is perfectly enough.

But we have to be honest with ourselves. Sometimes what we are doing is perfectly enough, and it’s still not working. That doesn’t mean we need to panic, and do more, and prove our worth in meaningless ways. It means we need to change direction, restructure, and start again. It means we need to make a new plan, write it out, then close our laptop for the day and know in our bodies that we have done enough for the day.

As we prepare for this week’s gentle new moon in Cancer, I remind you that in every single way possible, you are more than enough. Everything you do is perfectly enough, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

In the Sky

☉Don’t forget that Mercury is currently retrograding through Cancer. Today on 7/12, Mercury collides with the sun at 20° Cancer. This might inspire an aha moment or may cause you to short circuit in some way. Take it easy. Listen deeply. Move slowly. This particular mercury retrograde season has me on edgeeee. The MTA is playing games with me every single day, and I am taking lots of daily deep breaths. Are you feeling it too? As best as I can, I am trying to let things come in and out. I am trying not to hold on to my frustration and fumbles this month. They are either lessons meant to be learned from or hiccups meant to be let go.

☾ Moon moves - This week, we will see a new moon in cancer on Tuesday 7.14 - This gorgeous and nurturing lunation wants nothing more than for us to feel at home. It wants us to feel full and warm and taken care of. Do you feel that way? If not, what are ways that you can get yourself closer to feeling more nurtured and at ease? It can be as simple as baking yourself cookies, watching an old movie from childhood, or letting yourself sleep in later this week.

Your invitation: This week, I invite you to feel full in your enoughness. Take at least one item off of your to do list each day. Feel satisfied when you complete what you can and restructure the rest of it for another time. You deserve time to rest and rejuvenate. The moon in Cancer said it, not me!!

A lot of prep and behind-the-scenes work in the studio these days.

I met with some lovely astrology clients and read quite a few charts at a birthday party at the Chelsea Hotel.

A recurring theme in the astro-studio this week (that is actually quite closely related to my own musing above) was this idea of being so close to what you’ve been dreaming of or working towards but feeling still so far out of reach. I talked with clients about different ways of reframing our perspective on this, not to exert more effort necessarily, but to perhaps bring in new boundaries, take a break and come back, or find more honest alignment within ourselves before expecting external alignment.

All great and interesting conversations. Holding space for investigating these parts of ourselves continues to be a gift!

I went through a creative heatwave of sorts. And according to Taoist theory, this is right on time. As you’ve heard me mention before, summer is the season of fire. It is ruled by the shen spirit. It is the time of year when our creative and spiritual expression is at its peak. We’ve spent all year (since peak winter) cultivating and gathering enough energy and resources to get to this point; so now it’s time to let it out! (cue fireworks)

To be in alignment with this season is to express what is on your heart and embody your truest self. The one that maybe doesn’t make perfect sense to everyone else, or fit neatly into a box. The version of you that allows your eyes to sparkle and your heart to feel full. That is the epitome of the shen spirit… expressing your birthright essence.

I feel like it’s really important to specify that the shen spirit and living in alignment with it doesn’t necessarily have to relate to the work you do to pay your bills. Our society conflates soul’s purpose with career ambitions. For some people perhaps the two are deeply woven, but if that’s not the case for you, THAT IS OKAY.

The shen spirit, the heart spirit, the sparkle in your eyes can come from so many other places. It can come from the deep bond you have formed with your friends, the meaningful meals you share with your partner at the end of the day, the triathlon you are training your butt off for, or the poetry project that keeps pulling at your attention.

Your heart spirit, and creative essence are not always directly tied to your career, and sometimes it’s healthier if it’s not!

I got sidetracked on that rant, and I’m not sorry about it.

Back to our creative or spiritual heatwave. Although it’s hottt outside, I encourage you to engage in some sort of expressive or creative activity over the next few weeks. Allow yourself to get lost in a sweaty haze of passion as the peak yang energy of this summer supports your endeavors.

I will add that taking my projects offline and in the sun (when its below 85° LOL) made me feel even more connected to my creative self.

Nothing I’ve worked on in the past week will be for you or my clients or my students. It’s all for me. But from that place, my cup is filled to the brim with inspiration and ideas that I most likely won’t be able to help myself by pouring back out to you at some point.

And that’s how the cycle of the seasons works. We get so full at the peak of summer with fire and inspiration that we have to share ourselves and our work with others. The fruit from the trees is so abundant, they can’t help but fall into our laps with generosity. And from that place we begin to empty. We share our gifts and release our struggles only for the cycle to begin again come winter.

Your invitation: Align with your own creative heatwave of sorts. What does it mean for you to embody summer and the shen spirit in this way?

☉ 7/8 Venus moves into Virgo - our planet of pleasure and values moves into the discerning earth sign of Virgo this week. Considering that Mercury is currently retrograde, this transit is extra delicious. If we think of Mercury as ruling our head and Venus leading our heart, we may find ourselves more easily able to make decisions from a place of instinct rather than logic. In areas where we might find ourselves overthinking things or crossing wires during the retrograde period, Venus in Virgo might help us follow our inner compass with more clarity.

☾ Moon moves - This week, the moon is on a waning cycle. On Tuesday, we will see a strong last quarter square in the sign of Aries. This is another cosmic signature this week that will invite us to follow our gut instinct before talking ourselves out of something. It encourages us to filter out the noise of the external world and stay true to that inner compass.

Your invitation - With the moon waning and Venus moving into Virgo, the vibes of this week are pretty straightforward. Anything that is clouding your vision or causing you to do mental gymnastics needs to be burned away. Your invitation this week is to tune in to your inner compass — listen to which direction it is pointing you towards. Take the steps needed to follow your inner knowing, even if they don’t make sense right now. There is a lot of cosmic support this week for attuning to the more subtle aspects of yourself (not just the loud mind).

Last week, the studio was pretty quiet. I didn’t stray far from my desk and central AC. When I did leave the house to go into Manhattan, I refused to do it without an iced herbal infusion in hand. (This week it was a refreshing blend of oatstraw, morninga leaf, rosehips, and orange peel).

I jumped at the opportunity to sub two back-to-back yoga classes last minute, teaching my first vinyasa class in over a year! Otherwise, I have been busy behind the scenes preparing for the following upcoming events!

As a Virgo rising, I pride myself on my voracious curiosity. You can literally always find me enrolled in a course, signed up for a workshop, or doing a rabbit hole deep dive. (current obsessions are sleep research, stock trading, and sound therapy) As I’ve been preparing for this week’s Mercury retrograde (more on that below) and contemplating about some moon phases coming up in July, I’ve been contemplating the idea of re-visiting old information or re-acquainting myself with the basics of my trade. Perhaps before I add more tools to my toolbox, I can use this Mercury retrograde season to crack open my old yoga teacher training manuals and astrology notes and revisit the fundamentals before I continue to branch out.

This particular Mercury retrograde is happening in Cancer from June 29 - July 23. A solid few weeks to sift through old notebooks, lectures, and manuals instead of adding more to the equation. Because mercury (planet ruling the mind and the intellect) is moving backwards through the nostalgic and emotionally driven sign of Cancer, it feels fitting to prioritize flipping through old journals. Seeing your own handwriting, observing what felt important to you at that time (and considering how it has changed). I find that I often feel so much compassion and love for a younger version of myself when I look through old notes and journals. I can feel my excitement and hesitation. I resonate with old ideas that I forgot I even had. It’s been a while since I’ve done this, so now feels like the perfect time.

I wonder what will arise when I revisit my old books and ideas. I’m sure they’ll make their way into next week’s newsletter, so stay tuned.

In the Sky

☉ 6/29 Mercury Retrograde + Jupiter enters Leo - BIG DAY ALERT! I talked a bit about this mercury retrograde in the intro to this letter. But on top of that, Jupiter (the planet of abundance, optimism, and growth) is moving into Leo for the next year-ish. Boy-O-Boyyyy am I excited for this move. Leo is one of my favorite signs to work with because it teaches us about sustained authenticity and the energetics of magnetism. With such a big planet moving into this sign, this is a time for us to grow into our inherent self-worth in ways that are unique to us. We will be challenged through increased visibility, like a spotlight you never asked for. If you are comfortable being seen, this might feel like an electric time. If you’re not, there is a big growth edge waiting for you. Consider making friends with the discomfort of visibility — next month might help with that a bit.

☾ Moon moves - This week, we have a big, gorgeous Full Moon in Capricorn on Monday 6/29 (I told you it was a big day). In addition to everything else that’s happening in the sky on this day, the moon in its peak illumination will add vitality and excitement to the air. This could potentially lead you to take on more than you can handle, so be wary of that. But it is also an incredible moon for doing a little mid-year check-in. A Capricorn moon is a practical one that loves to look back to look forward.

Your invitation - Inspired by everything happening tomorrow, break out some old notebooks, and re-read lecture notes, journal entries, dreams, ideas, or even your little poems. The full moon in Capricorn is a perfect lunation to hold all of that information in a way that might allow you to infuse what you learn/gather into your future plans or goals.

Last week, in the studio, I taught my first private yoga session! Holding space for just one person is so different than a class full of people. We did a gorgeous nidra meditation followed by a gentle practice. Sometimes you just need something perfectly customized to you.

I also got access to my new studio space in greenpoint where I will be hosting workshops, private astrology & yoga sessions! I have been manifesting a space like this for the last three years, and I am so excited to fill it with sparkling cosmic energy and nourishing practices!

I appreciate the synchronicity of the Summer Solstice falling on Father’s Day this year (here in the U.S.). The luminary bodies of the sun and moon are often associated with the father and mother archetypes, respectively. I find associating gender to planetary bodies rather outdated, but from a biological and psychological standpoint, I am intrigued by the sun’s role as somewhat of a father figure.

Astrologers Liz Greene & Howard Sasportas wrote an incredible book based on a collection of seminars called The Luminaries. In it, they dissect our psychological evolution from birth as seen through the sun and moon or the luminary bodies. In their book, they outline how we develop from a lunar phase (dependence on mother) into a solar phase (independence and inspiration from father). Without getting too deep into the details, they describe the father as a sort of sun figure who acts as an “attractive outsider toward whom we can move in the process of differentiating from mother (moon figure).”

The Sun/Father figure/external force helps us move away from the comfort and safety of our mother’s arms into the courage required to seek out our own independence in the world around us.

Whatever your relationship is with your father, we can all appreciate this strong, solar energy that pushes us to strike out on our own, seek adventure, and cultivate a sense of individuality. This solar energy is a bridge from the familiar comfort of our first home that extends far out into the future of possibilities. Happy Father’s Day to all the big, bright sun figures (this includes all solar people in our lives!) out there, lighting the path!

In the Studio:

As I begin to unfold new classes and workshops for my Brooklyn community, I wanted to bring all of my readers along for the ride. In this section of the weekly, I will share reflections of what we are pondering in the studio and event updates for the week ahead!

Last week, in the astro studio, I met with a client who inspired me to reflect on the importance of audacity, especially for women who are living and working in male-dominated spaces. The fire signs of the zodiac (particularly Aries and Leo) carry an inherent sense of boldness that, when operating in alignment, allows them to ask for what they want unapologetically. For a myriad of astrological and circumstantial reasons, I find it is quite common for people I work with to talk themselves out of what they really want or simply never work up the nerve to ask for it.

Your invitation - start small this week. Think of something you want (or better yet, need!) and ask for it. Claim it! You might be surprised how quickly people show up for you….
I was nervous to ask my current students for testimonials and reviews for the launch of my private yoga branch. It felt like such a big ask, but I knew I needed their words to help get myself out there. I was blown away by how quickly and excitedly people showed up for me.

This week - I am hosting my first installment of the summer park social series! After years of wondering why no one was showing up to my summer events, I realized it was because everyone was outside! So I’m bringing the meditation to the park :)

As I reminisce on previous Junes, I am reminded of the summer rains of cancer season. How my heart feels so full and wide open and vulnerable all at the same time. I often find that the rain forces me into a state of reflective meditation and surrender. That’s the nature of the season, I suppose.

In the Taosit lineage, summer is represented by fire and is the peak expression of yang (opposite of yin). It is the time of the year when we celebrate our accomplishments, observe what has been culminated and built, and assess where we want to go from here. To truly acknowledge the fruits of our labor, there is a part of us that has to open our hearts a little wider, allow ourselves to be seen, maybe even appreciated. Before we can bask in the radiant summer light fully, we have to first walk through the soft doorway (cancer season) and tend to the quiet corners of our soul.

But I am getting ahead of myself.

Before the arrival of Cancer season (and the summer solstice), we still have two full weeks of Gemini season to soak up. Gemini is a beautiful precursor to Cancer in the way that it ensures we deepen our social connections before we start to open our hearts. It’s a season that encourages us to feel safe and seen by the people around us before we take the journey into vulnerability and eventually greater visibility.

And so, for the next two weeks of Gemini season, I invite you to consider your networks. Your webs of friendships, loved ones, collaborators, co-workers, etc. I encourage you to show up a little more and ask others to show up in return. Put a little more effort into the relationships you care most about and notice what happens in your heart space in return…

Think of this new moon like a magnificent spiderweb of your work glittering in the sunlight. Like a delicate work of art, woven together in a perfectly unique pattern. Under this new moon, we can open our minds to all of our various (sometimes even contradicting) passions and strengths that work together to create our beautiful life.

June 21st - Cancer Season Begins 🌞 Summer Solstice

Here in the northern hemisphere, as the sun moves into the sign of Cancer, it marks the longest day of the year, also known as summer solstice.

Cancer is an interesting energy. As a water sign, it is yin, offering a cool-down, nurturing, and reflective time. But as a cardinal sign, Cancer has more power than we give it credit for. Like Aries, Libra, and Capricorn, it has a strong urge to initiate, create, and bring something into form. As you’ll read below, Cancer is the cosmic mother after all. Creating and sustaining life is no easy job. Cancer teaches us the beauty and importance of soft strength. It’s a sign that reminds us that in order to grow big and strong, we need to be well-rested, regulated, and nourished.

Vibe of the season - a refreshing sip of water after a long afternoon in the hot sun. ⛲️

June 29th - Capricorn Full Moon 🌕 (and more)

This is beautiful, iconic, peak full moon energy. Capricorn is the sign concerned with legacy, longevity, and accomplishments. With a bright illumination in the midst of our summer radiance, this full moon offers us a chance to reflect on our journey. What detours have we taken, what lessons have we learned, where have we surprised ourselves, what is it all for?

How does the road we’ve walked inform the direction we will go in? Will we blindly follow the comfortable path or will we make informed and soul-led adjustments along the way to keep us aligned with our truth? That is the question this moon poses.

In addition to the full moon on the 29th, we will also be seeing Jupiter move into Leo (!!!) and Mercury retrograde (not ‘!!!’) I’ve been waiting for this Jupiter shift into Leo all year, I am particularly excited to see how it helps expand our sense of individual power, creative energy, and connection to FUN! Mercury will be retrograding through Cancer, asking us to re-absorb old lessons and ensure that we are making decisions from a place of self love first and foremost.

Last month, I told you I was looking forward to deepening my tea practice after my trip to Japan. I thought that being home in front of my beautiful alter and big balcony windows was going to inspire me to sit and meditate over a warm cup of sencha.

Well I was wrong. My body needed something different. And sometimes when we release the need to follow an exact plan, we make space for what really needs to happen to unfold. My practice of May turned out to be a combination of early morning pilates videos in my pajamas, weekly spirit animal cards, and an intentional break from yoga. I am tenderly working through hip pain that has been lingering for far too long by incorporating more strength training. As someone who rarely ‘works out’ I am finding new levels of spirituality and perseverance with each and every squat and plank. After months (years?) of softening my mind and my body, it turns out I needed to add back in some rigor and effort again.

This month, I am looking forward to getting stronger and making space for consistent stillness in my days. What about you?

It was hard. My legs were trembling. But this idea of digging deeper felt important. Digging deeper into myself, my space, and the present moment. Afterwards, I collapsed onto my floor, so tired and heavy. I imagined those roots I’d been craving reaching out of my body into the fresh soil I just dug up.

Today, my body is sore, but I find myself feeling a little more present and grounded. I am still contemplating the idea/concept of digging. Searching for something, making space for something, efforting towards something. It brings about the scent of fresh soil and bark. The action of digging is challenging, devotional, and slow. Like Taurus :)

May 16th - Taurus New Moon 🌑

A moon for us to stop and smell the roses. Seriously. With Taurus being ruled by Venus, this new moon encourages simple indulgence in Mother Nature’s exquisite beauty. A bouquet of fresh market flowers, a nap in the sun, a dish of water on your altar, scented oil in your hair.

With this dark sky in the embodied sign of Taurus (in the last few days of Taurus season, no less), you have permission to indulge in taking your time.

Plant seeds of things that will nourish you over time. What can you invest in now that will serve you in the future?

May 20th - Gemini Season Begins 🌞

The sun slips into the mutable air sign of Gemini just a few days after that new moon in Taurus (even more reason to indulge and slow down on Saturday). Gemini season is a great month to make new connections (professional or social), tune into your inner wordsmith (write more, share more, listen more), and find ways to cross-pollinate.

I will be using this month as a big brainstorming month. Aquarius season (our last air season) brought me a great deal of inspiration and vision for my work. I sort of lost the spirit and juiciness of that vision as my priorities shifted, so I am excited to harness Gemini season by blocking out concrete time to let the ideas flow.

May 31st - Sagittarius Full Moon (blue moon) 🌕

Yes, we are blessed with two full moons in the same calendar month…aka a blue moon. In general, full moons embody celebration, community, expression, and culmination. Things that are built that are ready to be showcased, honored, and shared. Every year, the Sagittarius full moon screams celebration to me. It is a moon that wants to be experienced in community, in joy, and with open hearts.

Years ago, when I launched my business, my sister insisted on having a launch party (which we did under the Sag full moon). To this day, her insistence on memorializing that milestone with food, friends, and celebration reminds me of the importance of presence and honoring the passing of time.

This bright sky is a beautiful time to gather with friends, honor big milestones, or simply connect with an activity that brings you joy.

✶ meditations / musings

I missed New York quite a lot while I was gone. Nearly five months away from my buzzing, bustling city. I was surprised by how overstimulated I have been in my first week back. I’ve been contemplating how acclimated my nervous system must have become to the speed and rigor of this city over the last eight years. I am also recognizing that the city is coming out of hibernation after a long, cold winter, so spring is extra electric this year.

Taurus season often invites me to ponder my environment. How is it supporting or draining me? I have been lucky enough to explore many different environments this year (in 3 different countries). All of their different energetic signatures, inspiring different things within me (cue astrocartography rabbit hole)

My meditations and rituals change as often as the seasons. As I come out of this month-long transition time, I have been mostly anchored by my daily 20 minute nidra practice and playing the Tibetan bowl to wake myself up while keeping my mind soft. I am looking forward to developing a tea practice as I settle back into being home.

✶ loving lately

Tea: In Japan, I purchased a lot of beautiful green teas, a perfect ceramic teapot, and a handmade tea table to sit right next to my yoga mat. (I’ll send along photos next month once my tea practice becomes a reality). I’m enjoying the vibrancy and richness of these green teas as spring comes into full swing.

Pencils: Being home, I am reunited with my full collection of pencils (all 5 of them). Writing out my to-do list, erasing rain-checked dinner plans, and practicing cursive in my journal - all so much more soothing with a pencil. To be honest, as a left-handed person, pencils also feel less intimidating than pens.

Libby: I love the library. Life in Hawaii gave me ample time to read, but put me at a great distance from the brooklyn public library. So when my boyfriend gave me his old kindle and I figured out how to get library books on the kindle, I felt invincible. Highly recommend listening to audiobooks on libby and checking out e-books. Unlike most people, I don’t mind waiting. So being on the waitlist for weeks at a time for books and watching myself crawl up the queue is also oddly satisfying. Deeply in my libby era.

꩜ Today’s major Scorpio lunation will highlight our capacity. How much are we holding right now? How much are we able to give/receive? Or from a different perspective, how much are we prepared to lose, and how much can we allow ourselves to truly take in? As I write this, it reminds me of Gay Hendrick’s idea about the upper limit problem. He writes about it in his book, The Big Leap. The idea is that when we feel ourselves achieving something beyond what we imagined for ourselves or living a life beyond our wildest dreams, we start to get uncomfortable in this unfamiliar terrain, and we subconsciously sabotage ourselves to bring ourselves back down to a place that we are familiar with.

When thinking about the Scorpio Full Moon from this perspective, it’s a really great time for us to check in with the relationship between our deepest fears and our biggest desires.

How are they connected?

How might we use the light of this moon to examine our ability to increase our capacity?

To be in communion with our fears while stretching ourselves to authentically be able to hold all that we desire.

As the moon wanes down through Sagittarius and Capricorn following this full moon, the stage is set for a nice integration of this theme, so don’t feel the need to rush through this process.

In addition to spring giving me the gift of my word of the year, it has also taken our plumeria tree in the front yard from 6 flowers at any given time to about 46. Granted, the tree remains mostly bare, but because I sit on the front porch for hours every day, this is a significant sign of spring to me. The plumeria tree operates at an incredibly fast speed (for a tree). I watch the flowers bud, fully blossom, and fall in a matter of days. The path up to the house is scattered with bright pink plumerias face down. Their life span so short! Their beauty so fleeting! So in my final days enjoying this tree, I find myself grasping at these fallen fragrant flowers. Collecting the freshest ones in a ceramic matcha mug every morning, and carrying them around with me throughout the day.

Over the last few days, my mind has been spinning on how to connect my mantra of simplicity with today’s Aries new moon. And, in classic fashion, I overanalyzed it. It’s quite obvious, really. Aries is a simple sign because it’s the first sign. It’s not bogged down with experiences, opinions, ideas, expectations, or ambitions. It’s just here. So present, so happy to be alive, and so excited to exist.

I admire the simplicity of Aries. Unlike many of the other zodiac signs, Aries operates with a single-track mind. Laser focus on just one thing. Pouring all of its energy and attention into a concentrated area. What may seem borderline obsessive is usually just deeply devotional. Committed and passionate.

This new moon is not dissimilar from my hot pink flowers. So potent and fleeting. Powerful and fast. Focused and simple. This moon carries that excitement of beginning anew and a call to simplify. It’s a reminder that truly living is about the amount of presence you are able to bring to any given moment. To make your coffee, fully aware. To listen to people speak, drive into the city, notice each and every dog on the beach, all with an incredible sense of “here I am”.

I hope that you can enjoy this moon in some way. Plant some new seeds of intention for the year ahead. Maybe invoke a word or mantra that inspires you. Light a candle and look out your window for a while without any distractions or running mental to-do lists. Simply let yourself be and experience that sense of ‘here I am’.

As the quartet took their places on stage, surrounded by hundreds of flickering battery-operated candles, the crowd quieted, and a few coughs and sneezes settled us into a perfect readiness. The four musicians raised their instruments, all gently gazed into each other’s eyes, nodded slightly, and promptly began with the first song. At first, I was mostly in awe of how synchronized they were as they began each song. With such confidence, steadiness, and connectedness, all four of them opened each song with stunning precision. It reminded me of the Aries energy we are in right now. Being witness to such a strong beginning. Moving from silence into a beautiful melody almost instantaneously. That spark of initiation. No one lingered or hesitated. The sound just appeared as if it had been there the whole time.

By the end of the performance, I became more enamored by the relationship between these four people and their strings. Because there were so few of them, it was easy to move my attention back and forth between them. The double bass held steady as the violins and viola danced around each other musically. A violin on its own is stunning. But when it moves in relation to other strings, it’s something else entirely. Having the astrology brain I do, this dance of the strings reminded me of Libra. The sign that strives for harmony, balance, and beauty. The sign of relationships and the dynamic required to seamlessly merge two into one. As the musicians played, they stayed in a perfectly harmonious relationship with each other. In doing so, creating magic for our ears.

The whole evening struck me as rather Venusian, really. The grandiosity of the cathedral. The ocean breeze that blew through the stained glass windows. The button-down shirts, high heels, and spring dresses of everyone around me. The relationship of the strings as they worked together to create beautiful music that danced through the hall. All of these separate magical components came together for an evening that felt really quite magical.

And so, as we open into the first day of April, the moon reaches peak illumination in this harmonious sign of Libra. Like a perfectly orchestrated concert in a cathedral, this full moon attempts to pull together a variety of fragments to create a patchwork of magic. What does this look like for you? A combination of random moments, favorite sweaters, silly texts, lovely views, delicious dinners, and meaningful conversations that all merge and blend together to create a perfect life.

Full moons are always nice times to reflect and reorient to our current experience. Maybe you can find some time this week to reflect on your unique patchwork of magic. 🪄

It feels particularly fitting for this time of year. The final new moon of the astrological year, as we prepare for the transition into the spring season. We may find ourselves sifting through emotional or mental mud. (Or in my case, here in Hawaii, lots of physical mud.) Blurred edges, slippery ground, and almost inconceivable how beauty, growth, and new beginnings are possibly on the horizon. But they are. That’s the wisdom of the seasons. Even the hardest winters end. And without those hard winters, the Earth would simply not be nourished enough for a new year of growth.

We are no different. Without periods of darkness or endless mud, we would not have the ability to regenerate. If astrology teaches us anything, it’s that nothing lasts forever, and nothing is linear. There can be no life without death, no growth without shedding, no flower without the mud.

Personally, I find Pisces season a great time for swirling around in my daydreams and fantasizing about what I want to bring to life this year. I can’t think of a better moon to imprint our deepest wishes within than today’s New Moon in Pisces. It is the final moon of this astrological year. It is also the wisest. Pisces represents the end of the cycle, the liminal space in between. The pause before an ending and a beginning. I deeply believe in the potency of this time, this emptiness. I hope you can create some sacred space between this new moon and the equinox on Friday. Consider what is asking to be let go of and what is waiting to begin.

Last time I wrote to you, I was preparing for a trip to Mexico for a journey into the world of yoga nidrā and sound healing. I had this preconceived notion that it was going to be a particularly Piscean experience. Sleep yoga combined with crystal bowls, dream journaling mixed with gong journeys. I was correct, it was super Piscean. After 5 straight hours of yoga nidrā practices, my body and mind felt like they had completely melted into the vast expanse of nothingness. So Pisces of me. I learned about brainwaves. How to work with them and how true deep rest is vital for healing the body and clearing the gutters of the subconscious mind. I fell so deeply in love with a practice that has endless benefits and literally just requires you to lie still and receive. In a world that is constantly trying to optimize and biohack, this ancient practice of meditative storytelling feels revolutionary to me.

So I leave you on the last edge of the astrological year. Notice what final threads are coming together. Notice what journey you’ve been on since last March. Acknowledge the mud that was required to help cultivate the many blessings and lotus flowers in your life today <3 I hope this new moon is a magical one for you!

i’m preparing for a yoga nidra training, which feels fitting for this moon and this season, to be quite honest.

what i know so far about the art and practice of yoga nidra (nidra translates to sleep) is that it is a way for us to transform our external/conscious reality through deep rest and exploration of the subconscious realm. i’m excited to share more on what i learn soon!

pisces season (where we are currently) is all about dreams, visions, intuitive whispers, and magic. the virgo full moon (lunar eclipse!) offers us tangible tools to access the dreamworld and engage with these ethereal ideas more concretely.

an idea i keep returning to as i study my required reading is “things are not always as they seem”. this is also a recurring theme among my clients over the past month. the astrology of this season is foggy, making it hard to discern what is true and what is false. it feels like we are being challenged to trust in what is at play behind the scenes.

the lesson of this moon is, maybe it’s too soon to tell. maybe the reality of the situation isn’t accurately reflected on the surface. perhaps we need more time before we can cast our judgements or make our first move. (upcoming aries season feels like a great time for initial movement).

and so, let us honor the rest of pisces season by making space for the unseen, the ephemeral, and the dream space.

and let us tap into the magic of this virgo eclipse by noticing what tools (dream journals, fantasy novels, watercolor paints, yoga nidra, etc.) help us access our subconscious and bring it closer to form.

The movement consists of creating internal resistance, reaching up and back for a single star, sweeping your arm across the sky, and eventually floating the hand down as the energy moves into the body. It’s a fairly relaxing form. As I do it, I like to imagine my ability to fill the night sky with an entire constellation with the simple sweep of my arm. I like the idea that I have the power to transform a single star into an interconnected web of sparkling gems.

Which brings me to the new moon/solar eclipse in Aquarius. Tuesday, February 17 at 7:01 est. This is also Lunar New Year - the beginning of the year of the fire horse. In many ways, this day is quite cosmically potent. February, in general, is jam-packed with astrological magic, but this day in particular marks an important shift. From the Chinese Zodiacal perspective, we complete the shedding of the snake skin and prepare to launch into a full gallop of the fire horse. There is activation, speed, and momentum present here. Where do you feel ready to launch? Step forward? Expand?

In terms of this solar eclipse in Aquarius, I get the sense that it is a peculiar lunation. Something about it seems new and mischievous. As with all eclipses, there is an air of uncertainty and magic. We can never really predict what is lurking around the corner, waiting to unfold before us. This is the first eclipse we will see in Aquarius as we prepare to shift into the new Aquarius/Leo eclipse axis over the next few years. A new storyline begins. I have a feeling this narrative is going to increase the rapid changes we see in technology and AI, and in turn urge us to move closer to physical connections, experiences, and ways of living.

Aquarius always emphasizes the evolution of the collective experience. Given the major astrological changes we are undergoing this month, we are preparing for many new storylines to begin taking form. Instead of gripping on tighter to what was once certain, this new moon in Aquarius is inviting us to open our hearts and minds to the unknown. It certainly won’t be easy. It will likely be scary and awkward. But we won’t be alone, this sign reminds us. We will be traveling together into future hopes and dreams.

Imagine yourself as a single star, being plucked from one end of the sky, gently moved over to become a part of the Big Dipper. You, a single person, with a chance to contribute your unique gifts to a larger constellation of people. How would you like to show up? In times like these, it feels almost trivial to focus on inner radiance. When I think of Leo, I think magnetism, sparkle, joyful fire, and heart-centered energy. But in times like these, this fixed fire sign can also act as stable, hopeful fuel that propels us forward on our personal and collective journey.

In my qi gong practice last month, I worked a lot with heart forms and fire energy. This is not uncommon to help generate heat in the winter water months. I returned to my notes on the heart spirit, called the Shen. I found just the wisdom I was searching for as the foundation of this Leo Full Moon. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Shen spirit is located in an empty void at the center of the heart. It is said that it is vital to maintain this emptiness in the center of the heart so that the Shen spirit always has a proper home. We maintain this void by striving for a sense of inner peace and neutrality. In times like these, inner peace and neutrality feel nearly impossible. We feel hopeless, rage, confused, and a variety of other emotions. We find ourselves scrolling endlessly through feeds and news cycles, maybe hoping for a glimmer of good news. That’s why it is even more crucial to protect this void space for the Shen spirit to land. My favorite Lorie Dechar writes,

“Psychological symptoms that arise when the shen is not adequately protected or well rooted in the Heart include disassociation from self, muddled thinking and communication, and depression or lack of integrity from life and relationships.”

When we feel emotionally frazzled, overexcited, or experience shock, it is said that the Shen spirit flies away. And when the Shen flies away from home, we tend to disassociate.

Sound familiar?

So let us use the fiery, heart-centered energy of this month’s full moon in Leo to help us call home the spirit of the Shen. To bring the heart and body back together, so that we can be a present and radiant light for ourselves and our communities.

As you may have also heard, February is a major (if not THE major) month astrologically. Just a few days ago, Neptune moved into Aries for the first time since 1861, where it will be for the next 12 years. In a few weeks, Saturn will join Neptune in Aries, making a grand conjunction of these two planets at 0° of Aries on February 20th. This is huge. The planet of dreams and illusions is coming together with the planet of boundaries and structure, joining forces at the first degree of the first sign of the zodiac for the first time in thousands of years. Astrologers have a lot to say about this occurrence, predicting what will happen, issuing warnings, and breaking down the energy of these planets.

I am not going to do that.

What I am going to share is a call to open your mind and protect the center of your heart. Times are changing. We are moving through an initiation with these planets joining at 0° Aries. To me, this feels like a new beginning. But remember, all new beginnings come on the heels of a death, an ending, a breakdown. We are experiencing many endings and beginnings on many levels.

So if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by the world around you, frozen with fear, or burnt out by the constant noise, I invite you to do something…then nothing. Take action, then let your heart come home. Donate, then rest. Protest, then put your phone down and do something you love.

This full moon in Leo reminds us that in order to keep the flames lit, we have to tend to the void at the center. To keep it open and empty, a space for us to come home to and rest. Let acts of joy flourish loudly, keep that inner radiance sparkling brightly. Because in times like these, we need beacons of light fighting the fight, while also protecting their hearts.

I have been more connected to my feet lately. Walking barefoot to the beach each morning, feeling the cold sand slowly warm as the sun rises. Noticing the grains of sand that follow me home, stuck to the back edge of my heels. Wintering in Hawaii is, in every way possible, different than in New York. One of the many gifts is being outside every day and being barefoot — connected to the earth that holds me.

At the end of our qi gong practice, we sit on the floor, reflecting on where we felt the qi moving through our bodies and what sensations stood out to us from our practice. Despite practicing heart forms, our discussion drifted to the gallbladder official and the hun spirit. Our teacher goes on to say that, according to Chinese Medicine, the gallbladder (with a deep connection to the liver) relates to our ability to make decisions, have vision for our future, and make plans that support these ideas. This immediately made me think of the Capricorn New Moon. Our ability to direct our will in the present moment inevitably supports the longevity of our dreams.

The first new moon of the year arrives at 2:52 pm EST on Sunday, January 18th. We find ourselves under a dark sky as the sun and moon meet in the late degrees of Capricorn.

Instead of building a complex web of systems and strategies for the year ahead, this moon is asking us to simply return to the earth beneath our feet. We are invited to notice and have reverence for that which holds us.

After our drive home from the acupuncture studio, I pulled out my trusty book Kigo by Lorie Dechar. I find her passages on the gallbladder official and the hun spirit to see if anything connects even deeper to Sunday’s Capricorn New Moon.

She writes, “In essence, the hun spirit supports us as we find our path through the infinite possibilities and decisions of life. They allow us to go our own way while staying in right relationship to the world around us and to shout out the great “I am” of becoming who we are truly meant to be.

So we find ourselves in the portal of this new moon. Instead of overwhelming ourselves with lists of tasks to accomplish and boxes to check, may we take the time to honor the foundations and structures that support us. Let us balance our dedication to the future with a deep appreciation for the ground we’re already standing upon.

Let’s dive in

This theme feels perfectly relevant as we begin the new year. To me, Cancer is the sign of the home. While this sign does honor our lineage and past home-life, it also represents where our feet are currently planted and what we need to feel safe and secure. There is a holistic and caring quality to Cancer that reminds us to take it easy and be gentle with ourselves. On a personal level, this full moon arrives right on time as I settle into my own new home. After surviving 8 years or new york winters, I am spending the next few months with my partner and his family in Hawaii. So I find myself in a home away from home.

But as they say, home is where the heart is.

While Cancer doesn’t technically rule the heart, I think it tends to the heart-space in a way. It reminds me of the Pericardium. Anatomically, the Pericardium functions is a double-layered sac that surrounds and protects the heart, anchoring it in place. In Chinese Medicine, the Pericardium is said to guard the spirit that resides in the heart.

My favorite alchemical teacher, Lori Dechar writes in her book Kigo:

So as this full moon rises at the top of the year, we are invited to draw our awareness inward to the forcefield around our heart. What needs protecting? What needs nourishing? How can we actively support the home of our spirit? Let us open this year tenderly and with a lot of grace. Floating through the sea of life, listening to the waves and ready to change course when the moment is right.

The end of October stretched on, but also flew by. Most of it was a blur. Big changes and unexpected grieving colored the beginning of Scorpio season. By the time New York finally decided to be properly chilly autumn, Nic and I took off for a much-needed west coast vacation. We visited family, drove through the desert, and wandered around in the sun. November opened in a similar whirlwind with out of town celebrations and the new york city mayoral election (!)

As I am writing to you, my mind and body are attempting to settle back into routine. The vibrant colors of the trees changing outside my window and noticeably colder days are helping me orient myself in this season where I feel a little all over the place. I often speak about my love of Scorpio season being a time to settle into stillness and listen to that which wishes to shed, while also allowing for the discomfort of emptiness. So far, my world has been full to the brim that it’s been hard to even find a sliver of that Scorpionic silence. Perhaps as the moon begins to wane (see below), it will come more naturally.

As the moon moves through its waning journey back down to a New Moon in Scorpio on 11/20, we can spend the next few weeks embracing the beauty of slow growth and the importance of being present in our current experience.

Mercury Retrograde Incoming

On Nov. 9th, Mercury will station retrograde in Sagittarius, move back into Scorpio. On the day it begins moving forward again, it will meet up with the sun and moon in late degree Scorpio, opening a portal for communicating deeply personal or vulnerable emotions. As we move through this season’s mercury retrograde, instead of sliding into fear or blame, I hope we can attempt to soften into compassion and a deep sense of listening.

Consider how you’d like to set yourself up for success this retrograde season by scheduling out moments of pause or reconnection with self.

My Repurposed Thoughts on Scorpio Season

(from last year)

In the cycle of the zodiac, this season is connected to the waning gibbous/last quarter moon phase. This is the time in nature when the leaves start to brown and fall from the trees. The remaining fruits from our summer harvest drop and begin to decay. From an outside perspective, we see decay, loss, and an ending of sorts. And although all of those things are happening, what we can’t see is the internal alchemical process that happens to prepare for a new cycle.

Perhaps we’re at a point in our lives where our career isn’t what we had hoped for or a big project that we’ve spent a lot of time working on is finally finished. What now?

We let it go. We allow for a transformation to take place. We let it decompose and breakdown, deciding what parts of the process are worth keeping and what is worth recycling.

Scorpio represents the process of regeneration. What goes up must come down. What is born must also die (so that it can be born again). Scorpio gives us an intermediary place to grieve what we are losing so that we can begin again with an open heart.

The so called mysterious and shadowy aspects of Scorpio bring us below the surface. It is an energy that honors loss, grief, death, and fear. It gives us permission to move through these feelings without shame or guilt. And because Scorpio, being that deep well water, lends itself towards stillness, it can take a long time to get to a place where we feel safe meeting these feelings. We are invited to make a home in the shadow, pull up a seat at the table with our deepest fears and commune with our vulnerabilities.

woah.

So how do we move with this energy? How do we connect with the big, raw, honest, and unapologetic depths of Scorpio?

We listen. We tune in and quiet down. Scorpio rules that part of us that says “I had a feeling all along”. Because of its ability to operate in the depths of our subconscious mind, it is often REALLY hard to hear.

When we are connecting to Scorpio this month, I want to encourage us to keep it simple and return to the phrase “How am I feeling?” And before we form an answer, let’s close our eyes, bring our awareness deeper into our body, and actually listen for an honest response.

Below is a practice that you might like to try, created just for Scorpio Season.

So, here we are. It is properly autumn here in nyc. We are still doing that dance back and forth with brisk mornings and hot days. The layers of clothes come on and off and on again. Nic and I biked to the park for sunset last week, and we talked about how we can feel the weight of fall in the air. Everything feels ready to descend, but is holding on for one last encore. Some of the leaves are darker, while others are already starting to yellow and drop.

My business and I feel at odds in this moment. Like we are living in different seasons. She seems ready to grow and grow, while I am itching to plant new seeds and settle into the darkness of a new chapter. I find myself sort of suspended in between these two energies, trying to make space for both to be true.

Things to consider this month:

Early fall invites cooler air and space to shed some energetic layers. This is a time of year when we practice the art of letting go. We engage deeper with the acceptance of death as a part of life. We find peace in the endings that allow us to breathe more space into the next beginning.

You may feel a natural drop in energy as the seasons start to change. Your body mimics the descent of nature around you. In Chinese Medicine, this season is connected to the emotion of grief and the idea of death. It’s a time of year that is represented in the body by the lungs and large intestine. These organs encourage elimination, letting go, and embracing an ending of sorts.

While I will invite you to contemplate what you are shedding and choosing to eliminate this season, I will also invite you to consider this a practice of meeting death. Embracing a final ending while still having faith in your ability to keep growing, living, and thriving in the cycle to come.

A simple practice to connect to this idea is taking full, deep, cleansing breaths. Witnessing the emptying of an exhale and the life-giving energy of an inhale. Grief and sadness can constrict the movement of the lungs. Practice stretching the sides of the body and meditating on the life and death cycle of each inhale and exhale.

Practice:

Find a comfortable seat. (perhaps propping your hips higher than your knees by sitting on a pillow or blanket to make more space in the waist)

Start by taking one hand to the ground next to you lifting the other arm up and over head to get a big stretch in the side body. Stay for about 3-5 breaths and then switch sides.

Come back to center and bring your awareness to your breath. Gently begin to increase the amount of air you take in and let out.

Pause at the top of each inhale for 1-3 seconds. Observing what it is like to be completely full.

Then pause at the end of each exhale for 1-3 seconds. Observing what it is like to be completely empty.

Let your breath return to normal and notice how your body and mind feel.

Take this practice for 5-10 minutes each day as a simple autumnal meditation.

What I’ve been up to:

A random list of things that have been on the top of my mind over the last month.

1/ I have been continuing to crave a deeper digital detox, mostly from social media. It has been approximately 365 days of successful limited instagram use that I mentioned in this newsletter. I feel like I am on the verge of a big 2-3 month break. Stay tuned, I suppose.

2/ In effort to assist with limiting my screen time as someone who spends a lot of hours on my computer, I have still been starting a lot of my writing projects by hand before transcribing them to the computer.

3/ I have also picked up The Book of Alchemy from the library as a daily writing practice. So far I am loving the guided prompt that inspire me to write about things other than my own personal dramas or where the moon is in the sky. It’s refreshing for my brain to channel different frequencies.

4/ I have been practicing biking. If you know me well, you know that I actually developed quite a strong aversion (aka fear) of cycling in the city. Near my birthday in August, a friend sold me her bike. Since then, I have been enjoying the early fall weather by slowly and gently biking to my studio throughout the week. It’s literally the shortest ride ever, straight down one street, but I feel so proud of myself 🥲

5/ On Saturdays, I wake up early with the sun to prepare for my weekly yin class. I’ve been listening to Ram Dass lectures while I cook my oatmeal and drink my coffee. Highly recommend.
