The first official meeting of the Chianti Whine Collective at Sundowners Café began eleven minutes late because Bob MacMurphy insisted upon testing three separate pedestrian routes across the street.

The first route required everyone to walk north, cross at what Bob described as “the most geometrically defensible location” and return south along the opposite sidewalk. The second involved Captain David, who joked that he could fly everyone across the street in Concorde Number Two. He then spent long enough discussing boarding order, beverage service and runway clearance that nobody was entirely certain it had remained a joke. The third was Deborah’s plan.

Deborah looked both ways and crossed the street.

Everyone followed Deborah.

Sundowners had pushed several tables together and greeted the Collective with the relaxed hospitality of people who had not yet been informed that Bob’s burgundy binder traditionally occupied its own chair. Geraldine took one look at the seating arrangement, moved the binder to the floor and announced that if it ordered anything, it could sit at the bar.

Bob opened the binder to a newly created section labeled Temporary Relocation Compliance.

Nobody asked what was inside.

Abby settled beneath my chair, pleased with the move and apparently confident that Sundowners understood the basic relationship between hospitality and dropped appetizers.

Greg Featherman was studying his phone with the expression he normally reserved for disappointing earnings reports.

“I may be holding a dog,” he said.

Abby raised her head.

There are certain words a dog understands without formal training. Dinner. Walk. Treat. Squirrel. And apparently dog, when spoken in a tone normally reserved for plumbing emergencies and quarterly statements.

“What do you mean, a dog?” I asked.

“A terrible stock,” Greg said. “Artificial intelligence company. Real technology, terrible balance sheet. The thing keeps dropping as if it received confidential instructions.”

Abby continued staring at him.

“I don’t think dog is an appropriate term for a bad stock,” I said. “Dogs are loyal. Dogs are dependable. Dogs don’t issue millions of new shares while you’re sleeping.”

Deborah lowered her coffee. “That is an excellent point.”

Bob immediately opened a second section of the binder and wrote Canine Defamation in Financial Markets.

Captain David leaned back with the gravity of a man being asked to rename an approaching hurricane.

“Rat,” he declared. “A bad stock should be called a rat.”

Across the street, three small faces appeared in the window of Café Chaosa.

One of them held the tiny pencil from the original negotiations.

“Perhaps not rat,” Geraldine said.

Rats are intelligent and highly social animals. They remember routes, solve problems and cooperate with one another. They also possess excellent survival instincts, which means most of them would have left a failing investment long before the shareholders did.

“What about virus?” Greg asked.

“A virus enters the portfolio, weakens the host and keeps multiplying,” Geraldine said.

“Particularly the share count,” Michael added quietly.

That settled it.

Bob crossed out Canine Defamation and replaced it with Approved Classification of Portfolio Pathogens.

Abby returned to sleep, her reputation restored.

From our table, the Collective had an unobstructed view of Café Chaosa. The lights were dim, the curtains were partially drawn and a handwritten sign had appeared in the front window:

CHAOSA AFTER DARK

Small Plates. Smaller Management.

John-Mike nearly fell out of his chair.

“That is my slogan.”

Greg studied the sign, momentarily distracted from the virus stock.

“They’re building a brand,” he said. “We may be watching the beginning of a scalable hospitality concept.”

“We are watching rats turn on a lamp,” Geraldine replied.

Across the street, two members of the Rodent Hospitality Group appeared beneath the pastry counter. One wore what looked suspiciously like a bow tie. The other carried the tiny pencil and was inspecting a row of crumbs with managerial disappointment.

The third rat climbed onto the windowsill and rang a very small bell.

Sundowners grew quiet.

Even the bartender stopped polishing a glass.

A delivery mouse emerged from behind the espresso machine carrying a folded piece of paper. He crossed Café Chaosa’s dining room, disappeared through a gap near the door and—several minutes later—arrived at Sundowners.

Bob immediately reached for the document.

The mouse walked around him and delivered it to Deborah.

The note was written in extremely small handwriting.

The Rodent Hospitality Group cordially invites the Chianti Whine Collective to attend the soft opening of Café Chaosa After Dark.

Dress: Resort casual.

Reservations required.

Burgundy binders subject to corkage fee.

Use of “rat” as a financial insult is strongly discouraged.

Bob requested clarification.

The mouse had already left.

Captain David offered to transport the group across the street. He described the operation as a “night crossing” and began discussing passenger manifests, reflective clothing and the possibility of issuing commemorative boarding cards.

Deborah looked through the window.

“There are four lanes of traffic, David. We’re not crossing the Atlantic.”

Captain David appeared wounded but continued preparing the shuttle.

Geraldine declined the invitation on the grounds that she was already serving on the Temporary Espresso Machine Disposition Committee and would not accept another hospitality-related responsibility until someone produced minutes from the previous meeting.

Greg wanted to attend as a potential investor.

John-Mike wanted to negotiate licensing rights.

Bob wanted to see the lease.

I wanted to know what the rats were serving.

The answer arrived shortly afterward when another note was slipped beneath the door. Café Chaosa After Dark would feature a chef’s tasting menu consisting of an artisanal cheddar shaving, a deconstructed cracker, locally sourced pastry crumbs and something called Surprise du Pantry.

Geraldine said the surprise was probably a health inspection.

Nevertheless, the first customers began to arrive.

They were not human.

A squirrel occupied a table near the window and immediately sent back the cracker. Two geckos shared a cheese shaving on the patio. A white ibis appeared at the entrance without a reservation and was told there would be a twenty-minute wait.

The ibis did not take this well.

Reginald observed the dispute from the Sundowners roof. As the unofficial avian authority on Chianti Whine Lane, he watched the ibis pace beneath the awning, stare through the window and demand recognition based on species seniority.

The rats remained firm.

No reservation, no table.

For the first time in recorded Florida history, an ibis was denied access to food.

Bob began taking notes.

“This creates precedent,” he said.

“For what?” I asked.

Bob looked genuinely surprised by the question.

The evening continued with remarkably little trouble. The squirrel eventually accepted a replacement cracker. The geckos ordered another cheese shaving. Greg calculated estimated table turnover while John-Mike sketched a second tropical shirt featuring a rat in a dinner jacket beneath the words Reservations Are for Other People.

At Sundowners, the Chianti Whine Collective settled into its new surroundings. Drinks arrived. Chairs were added. Someone moved Bob’s binder farther from the breadbasket. The Sundowners staff welcomed every new arrival as though the group had always gathered there.

That was the surprising thing.

Café Chaosa had been the meeting place, but it had never truly been the reason for the meeting. The reason was the people who showed up, pulled over another chair, listened to the latest impossible development and stayed long enough to laugh about it.

Across the street, the rats had acquired a restaurant.

At Sundowners, we still had one another.

The thought might have produced a tender moment if the lights at Café Chaosa had not suddenly begun flashing.

The rats rushed toward the front window. The squirrel abandoned his cracker. The geckos disappeared beneath their table. The white ibis, still waiting outside, assumed that the flashing lights signaled a vacancy and attempted to enter through the patio.

A small electrical cord had become tangled around the espresso machine.

Geraldine stood.

“I knew they weren’t qualified to operate it.”

She crossed the street before Bob could retrieve the pedestrian traffic plan.

The rest of us watched as Geraldine entered Café Chaosa, unplugged the espresso machine and addressed the Rodent Hospitality Group with the unmistakable authority of a Scottish woman who had accepted too many committee appointments and had finally found a committee smaller than herself.

Within minutes, the lights stopped flashing.

The geckos returned to their table. The squirrel reclaimed his cracker. The white ibis was escorted back outside.

Geraldine emerged carrying the espresso machine.

“It’s coming to Sundowners,” she announced. “The rats have lost their caffeine privileges.”

Sundowners applauded.

The Rodent Hospitality Group did not object. Instead, they placed another sign in the window:

SECOND LOCATION COMING SOON

Beneath those words was an arrow pointing directly toward Cork & Dagger Reserve.

Bob stared at the sign, then he looked at his binder and then he looked at the sign again.

“I’ll need another section,” he whispered.

Reginald issued the evening’s final notice from the Sundowners roof:

The temporary relocation of the Chianti Whine Collective is deemed successful. Hospitality shall be recognized wherever chairs are added and friends are welcomed. The term dog shall refer only to a loyal companion of good character. The term rat shall not be used disparagingly while Café Chaosa remains under the management of the Rodent Hospitality Group. The term virus stock may be applied to any security that enters a portfolio, multiplies concern, mutates its explanation and causes the holder to check symptoms before breakfast. All such securities shall remain quarantined from additional capital until further notice. Rodent expansion into Cork & Dagger Reserve remains subject to review. Burgundy binders do not constitute zoning authority.

And so the first evening at Sundowners ended with the Collective comfortably settled, Abby’s reputation restored, the espresso machine safely relocated and Café Chaosa operating under management small enough to disappear whenever the bill arrived.

Because that is how things happen on Chianti Whine Lane.

Restaurants close. Rats reorganize. Committees cross the street. Friends make room at the table.

And somewhere inside Cork & Dagger Reserve, Bob MacMurphy is preparing two new binder sections:

The rats have entered the restaurant business, and the Chianti Whine Collective is temporarily relocating.

The Chianti Whine Lane Chronicles regrets to announce that Café Chaosa is temporarily closed.

The decision was not caused by declining attendance, rising food costs or the ongoing disagreement over whether Bob MacMurphy’s burgundy binder should be permitted its own chair. Café Chaosa is temporarily closing because the rats have decided that they need a restaurant of their own.

Negotiations began shortly after three representatives of the newly formed Rodent Hospitality Group appeared beneath the pastry counter. They arrived without an appointment but carried several crumbs, a tiny pencil and what Geraldine described as “the unmistakable confidence of creatures who already know where the emergency exits are.”

Their proposal was straightforward: the rats would temporarily assume control of the dining room, retain the existing cheese suppliers and introduce a late-night menu. Humans would be permitted to visit by reservation, provided they agreed not to move the furniture or ask too many questions about the kitchen.

Bob immediately requested a copy of the lease.

There was no lease.

This caused Bob to sit down very suddenly.

Greg Featherman believes the restaurant could become an attractive investment opportunity, particularly if the rats agree to franchise. John-Mike has already designed a tropical shirt featuring martini-drinking mice beneath the words Small Plates. Smaller Management.

Geraldine has declined another committee appointment, although she is currently negotiating the temporary disposition of the espresso machine.

Until Café Chaosa reopens, all meetings of the Chianti Whine Collective will be held at Sundowners Café, located directly across the street from the Cork & Dagger Reserve development.

Sundowners has tables, chairs, excellent hospitality and no known rodents with executive ambitions. It also provides Cork & Dagger residents with the rare opportunity to attend a Collective meeting without requiring transportation, a golf cart or Captain David’s emergency shuttle service.

Bob is preparing a pedestrian traffic plan for crossing the street. Deborah has suggested that everyone simply look both ways.

Reginald, observing from his usual position, issued the following notice:

The temporary relocation of the Chianti Whine Collective is approved. Members shall cross responsibly. Burgundy binders do not have the right of way.

And so, Café Chaosa pauses while the rats explore their ambitions in hospitality and the Chianti Whine Collective settles temporarily into its new home across the street.

Because that is how things happen on Chianti Whine Lane. Restaurants pause. Rats reorganize. Meetings move across the street. The community gathers again, orders something refreshing and carries on as though this were all perfectly normal.

Episode 59: The Rat Has Been Pre-Approved

The rat returned to Cork & Dagger Reserve at 7:12 on Tuesday morning carrying what appeared to be a credit-card offer.

I know it was 7:12 because Bob MacMurphy recorded the exact time in a new burgundy binder. The envelope was harder to explain. It was tucked beneath the rat’s front leg and announced, in the unnaturally cheerful manner of credit-card companies everywhere:

YOU’RE PRE-APPROVED!

By 7:30am, Bob had called an emergency meeting at Café Chaosa.

“This is identity theft,” he announced, placing the binder on the table. He had already labeled it RODENT CREDIT AND MARITIME FRAUD, which suggested he had reached several conclusions before the rest of us finished our coffee and morning Diet Coke.

Deborah examined the envelope. “It’s addressed to you, Bob.”

“That’s exactly what the rat wants us to think,” he said.

Captain David arrived wearing an eye patch. Nobody had established that he needed one, and nobody wanted to ask even they all really wanted to know.

“The rodent is working with the pirates,” he said.

This theory was not entirely unexpected. The previous evening, Captain David had classified credit-card companies charging nearly 30 percent interest as pirates. His opinion had not been legally confirmed, but it had been enthusiastically seconded by everyone who had opened a statement recently.

Greg Featherman examined the evidence. The rat had removed the application, shredded it and used the pieces to reinforce a small nest behind Café Chaosa.

“Honestly,” Greg said, “that may be the most responsible use of a credit-card offer we’ve seen all week.”

Geraldine declined Bob’s invitation to chair the newly created Rat, Debt and Piracy Committee. She was already responsible for Wildlife Harmony, Emergency Scone Preparedness and a task force investigating John-Mike’s latest tropical shirt.

The shirt said:

RATS GET 0% APR. HUMANS GET 29.99%.

Geraldine said it was inflammatory. John-Mike said it was available in six colors.

The meeting might have continued indefinitely if Michael had not quietly pointed out that the rat was not really the problem. “Debt and rats have something in common,” he said. “They both grow when you’re afraid to look.”

That silenced us.

Behind all the jokes were unopened statements, minimum payments and people who were embarrassed to admit that the numbers no longer worked. A credit card may begin as a way through one difficult month. Then another month arrives, the interest accumulates and the original emergency becomes a permanent houseguest.

Debt thrives in darkness. So does shame. And apparently, so do rats.

We made a neighborhood pact that morning. We would open the envelope, look at the number and ask for help before either the debt or the rat had an opportunity to start breeding.

At that precise moment, Abby spotted the suspect leaving Café Chaosa. She chased him across the pool deck without requesting identification, checking his credit or waiting for HOA approval.

The application was denied, the cheese was recovered and a turtle recorded something on his shell.

Reginald issued the final ruling:

Debt and rodents shall not be fed, ignored or permitted to serve on the Finance Committee. Pirates remain under review.

The motion carried unanimously and Captain David kept the eye patch.

Reginald’s Commentary

Following a complete review of the incident, Reginald would like residents to understand that all rodents entering Cork & Dagger Reserve must register with the HOA, disclose any outstanding liabilities and refrain from using residents’ mail as nesting material.

Credit-card companies charging pirate-level interest rates must remain outside the community gates unless accompanied by legal counsel and a reasonable repayment plan. This is one decision the HOA has actually gotten correct! 🤣

Captain David’s eye patch has not been approved as an architectural modification. Enforcement remains unlikely.

On July 31, 2026, the residents of Cork & Dagger Reserve received an official communication from the Association concerning Café Chaosa.

Association communications are written to reassure residents. They generally accomplish this by using phrases such as ongoing efforts, appropriate monitoring, documented communication and constructive resolution, all of which sound comforting until you realize nobody has actually said what is happening, they never do.

According to the letter, a Florida state-certified Wildlife Exclusion Specialist had inspected the restaurant. As of July 17, no rodent activity had been observed inside the kitchen, and all interior traps had been removed. The tenant had not vacated the restaurant, the owner had retained a pest-control company, the July rent payment was being monitored, lawyers were communicating, and mediation was being coordinated. Just what exactly was being mediated?💩

In other words, very little had visibly changed (it never does) but the paperwork was thriving.🦩

Chaosa Moment No. 1: Technically Correct

The first indication that Café Chaosa still had a rat problem wasn’t actually a rat. It was Bob MacMurphy standing outside the restaurant with a new burgundy binder labeled RODENT GOVERNANCE, while Greg Featherman asked whether anyone knew if the rats were accredited investors. The more, the merrier, right?

The Association’s letter was technically correct. There were no rats inside the kitchen because, at the time the letter arrived, most of them were beneath the outdoor terrace where the Chianti Whine Lane Investment Collective was attempting to hold its monthly meeting. They were crowding out the turtles….🐀

One rat crossed the walkway carrying the corner of a biscotti wrapper.

Bob pointed out that it was outdoors and therefore did not contradict the official findings. Deborah pointed out that it was still a rat.

My family had finally arrived from the Concorde skies to enjoy paradise, and, apparently, rats. I had imagined welcoming them with palm trees, warm Gulf breezes, glasses of wine and the sort of sunsets that make people reconsider every decision that led them to live somewhere else. Instead, they were greeted by an Association notice concerning rodent activity at Café Chaosa.

Nothing says welcome to Florida quite like paradise, family togetherness and a state-certified Wildlife Exclusion Specialist.

They had come for the special gathering, of course, although nobody was officially calling it a party. They accepted the rodent situation with surprising good humor. Every family vacation needs a story. Ours simply arrived with legal counsel, interior traps and a mediation schedule.

The Investment Collective continued meeting on the terrace because Greg believed the unused tables represented “an underperforming community asset.” Bob believed their presence constituted resident oversight so he loaded them up with reading materials. Captain David liked the acoustics so started playing videos on his phone.

Greg had barely begun discussing a small technology company when a scratching sound came from beneath the floor. Greg stopped talking and the scratching stopped, he continued. The scratching resumed. “I believe they’re responding to the fundamentals,” he said.🤪

“Or perhaps one of them is trapped beneath your chair,” Deborah replied.

Bob opened his binder to a section marked Unauthorized Rodent Attendance. No such section had existed that morning, but Bob had anticipated the need. He proposed requiring every rat to complete a Species Disclosure Form, provide proof of residency and identify whether it was attending as an owner, renter, guest, vendor or emotional-support rodent.

A second rat appeared near a planter and began eating the corner of the meeting agenda. He looked mysteriously like Dale Snitterman.

“That rat has now inspected an official Association record,” Bob said. “There may be confidentiality implications.”

Geraldine, who had only recently escaped several committees she did not remember joining, made the mistake of asking whether anyone had called a professional.

By sunset, she had been named chairwoman of the Rodent Relocation and Restaurant Readiness Committee.

“I only asked a question,” she protested. “How did this happen to me again?”

“That is how committees are formed,” Deborah told her.

Captain David classified the situation as a ground-level incursion and offered to conduct aerial surveillance from the Concorde. His proposal was rejected because the last aerial operation had frightened three egrets, activated two car alarms and caused Bob to open a separate binder concerning unauthorized sonic activity.

Then John-Mike arrived wearing a tropical shirt covered with rats in sunglasses. Across the back, in large gold letters, it read: FAST MONEY. SLOW TURTLES. NO REFUNDS.

Nobody asked where he had obtained it so quickly. Certain mysteries are healthier when left alone. Though Vistaprint can work relatively quickly.

A bear in the distance began taking photos.

Chaosa Moment No. 2: The Rats Heard About the Turtles

The breakthrough came from Reginald.

Reginald, our resident wood stork and unofficial HOA observer, had spent the morning beside the pond wearing the solemn expression of a bird who knew more than management was prepared to disclose. After considerable observation, and, one small fish—he revealed that the rats had not come to Café Chaosa merely for the food. They journeyed because they heard about the turtles.

More specifically, they had heard that Gerald and several members of the turtle community would be attending the special gathering that nobody was officially calling a party.

The rumor had apparently begun with an ibis, passed through two squirrels and reached the dumpster behind Café Chaosa sometime before dawn. By the time the rats received it, “the turtles are attending a gathering” had become “the turtles are bringing investment information.”

The rats naturally concluded that where turtles gathered, shell companies could not be far behind.

Greg was fascinated. “You see?” he said. “This could be an emerging alternative investment network.”

“They are rats, Greg,” Deborah reminded him.

“Early-stage investors are often misunderstood.”

The rats had already named their organization RATS—Rapid Asset Turnaround Strategies. Their business model appeared to consist of obtaining something that did not belong to them and moving it quickly to another location.

Greg admitted this was not entirely unlike certain sectors of the financial industry.

Bob was less impressed. RATS had no charter, no bylaws and no approved meeting schedule. Worse, one of its representatives had eaten the signature page of his proposed Rodent Conduct Agreement.

Mediation was scheduled immediately.

The Association would be represented by Bob and his binder. The restaurant would be represented by legal counsel. The rats would represent themselves. Gerald and the turtles would attend as neutral observers, although someone suggested that the turtles had caused the entire misunderstanding simply by accepting our invitation.

Gerald disagreed. “Being invited somewhere is not the same as causing a crisis,” he said.

It took him nearly four minutes to say this, but everyone agreed it was worth the wait.

Meanwhile, Deborah quietly did what sensible people do while everyone else is forming committees. She arranged for the premises to be inspected again, had the outdoor food sources removed, made sure the trash containers were secured and insisted that any wildlife-control measures protect Abby, Reginald, the turtles and the other neighborhood animals.

By the following afternoon, the rats had lost access to the buffet, the Investment Collective had relocated its snacks to sealed containers, and Café Chaosa was considerably less attractive as a rodent conference center.

Reginald’s Official Commentary

After reviewing the available evidence, Reginald issued the following neighborhood ruling:

Turtles may attend community gatherings because they bring their own housing. Rats may not solicit investments, consume Association records or occupy restaurant premises without authorization. Cake is not a security and may be distributed without a prospectus.

The ruling was adopted without objection, although one rat requested clarification regarding the cake provision.

A blue heron wrote something down.

Chaosa Moment No. 3: The Family Arrives

Having family there meant more to Michael and me than I could ever fit into an Association record. Of course, they couldn’t all attend, nieces and nephews have families and work…perhaps next time.

Mom does not enjoy traveling very much anymore, which made her presence especially precious, although her enduring love of the Concorde may have provided a little additional incentive.

Steve arrived in the middle of selling scads of vintage automobile radios, now featuring flamingo designs, because apparently even classic cars need a touch of Florida.🦩

Denise was already considering a new venture in health data analytics for wildlife. She had recognized a significant and largely untapped opportunity among the turtles, flamingos, bears and recently displaced rats.

Debra, a retired nurse with an MBA, immediately began evaluating whether Café Chaosa’s wildlife problem required a health-management plan, a business plan or both. Her husband, Russ, who is also retired from construction, joined Brad in studying the surrounding walls, doorways and possibilities for remodeling something, somewhere.

Brad was still trying to determine how he might bring his construction company to Florida. His wife, Loretta, listened patiently before reminding everyone that she would prefer Arizona.

Dennis, drawing upon his experience in insurance sales, began developing a final-expense plan for the neighborhood wildlife. The turtles appeared interested, the rats asked whether preexisting conditions would be excluded, and the bears refused to provide their ages.

Sue took one look at the HOA’s computer systems and concluded that they required immediate modernization. Bob clutched his burgundy binder protectively and asked whether the existing system could simply be preserved in paper form.

Each of them had rearranged plans, traveled miles and stepped willingly into our particular version of paradise because Michael mattered to them. Their presence brought a warmth to the evening that no decoration could have created.

We hope they knew how deeply we appreciated having them there, and how much it meant to celebrate this extraordinary man together.

Some families simply attend a gathering. Mine had developed a healthcare venture, an insurance product, a construction strategy, a technology upgrade and a multi-state relocation disagreement before the cake was served.

Abby Assumes Command

Abby had known about the rats long before the official Association letter arrived. She had spent several mornings inspecting the hedge beside Café Chaosa with the concentration of a state-certified Wildlife Exclusion Specialist who preferred to be paid in treats. In Abby’s assessment, rats were unauthorized visitors, turtles were slow-moving friends, flamingos were suspiciously tall and bears were well above her pay grade.

When family arrived, Abby welcomed each person as though she had personally issued the invitations. She escorted Mom to the best chair, inspected the luggage for contraband snacks and supervised the entire gathering from a position near Michael. She also guarded the cake from the rats—although Deborah quietly observed that Abby’s definition of guarding included hoping someone would drop a piece.

As Michael played his ukulele, Abby settled beside him and listened with her head tilted slightly to one side. She may not have understood why the golden lights had been arranged in seven rows of ten, but she understood that Michael was special and that everyone she loved was together. For Abby, that was reason enough to remain directly in the middle of everything.

Chaosa Moment No. 4: Seven Rows of Golden Lights

The special gathering proceeded as planned.

Gerald and the turtles arrived first, moving slowly up Chianti Whine Lane as though they had been told the precise time and wisely decided it was merely a suggestion.

Abby welcomed each turtle personally, although her enthusiasm required me to explain that a turtle shell was not an interactive dog toy.

Along the lanai, I had arranged little golden lights in seven neat rows of ten with beautiful fake flamingos lining the walkway.

Bob asked whether the installation required an electrical permit. Deborah placed one hand on his arm and suggested that, for once in his life, he allow decorative lighting to remain unexplained.

Nobody mentioned a birthday.

Nobody mentioned a number.

Some numbers are better expressed in lights than spoken aloud.

Michael looked at the lights and then at me. For a moment, he wore the expression of a man who understood perfectly well what everyone was pretending not to do. He smiled, shook his head gently and went to help someone move a chair, the most Michael response imaginable.

The truth was that Michael was too special to all of us to allow his special day to pass as though it were any other. We weren’t trying to make a fuss—at least that was our official position—but we needed to celebrate the quiet, kind man who had given each of us so many reasons to gather.

Eventually, Michael brought out his ukulele and began to play.

Ricky the Skunk Ape provided backup on the triangle. His timing was unpredictable, but his enthusiasm was beyond reproach. His first strike arrived four beats late. His second arrived during a quiet moment that had not called for percussion of any kind. By the third, Captain David had begun conducting as though he were leading the London Symphony Orchestra through an emergency landing.

The flamingos stood together near the edge of the lanai, writing something down.

Nobody knew whether they were taking requests, documenting HOA violations or preparing a review for the local newspaper. Sue suspected they were collecting data. Denise believed they might be potential clients. Steve wanted to discuss licensing their images for his automobile radios.

And then there were the bears, we are not getting started on the bears. One wildlife crisis per episode was quite enough.

John-Mike presented Michael with a shirt featuring a rat in sunglasses and the words SLOW MONEY. FAST RATS.

Michael accepted it with the patient expression of a man who already knew he would eventually be required to wear it.

The turtles gathered near the garden. Captain David told a story that became more dramatic every time he repeated it. Greg attempted to interest Gerald in a long-term investment strategy, only to discover that turtles consider anything under fifty years to be short-term speculation.

Geraldine refused three new committee assignments from other communities.

Bob kept his burgundy binder closed for almost eleven consecutive minutes.

The rats did not attend, although a small nose was briefly observed near the hedge when the cake was served. I left one slice well away from the restaurant, the meeting records and Bob’s binder. Compassion, after all, does not require an invitation to move into the kitchen.

And with that, Michael’s special day was more than complete.

He was surrounded by people who loved him, including family who had traveled from afar to be there. But Michael had given us something far more special in return: one of those rare evenings when the people you love are gathered in one place, laughter comes easily, music does not have to be perfect and, for a little while, nothing important feels missing.

That was the real celebration. No Association permit could ever have captured it or outlawed the decorations…

Later, as the golden lights reflected across the lanai, it occurred to me that rumors and investments have something in common. Both travel fastest when nobody stops to ask whether they are true.

Greg had heard opportunity. Bob had heard violation. Captain David had heard invasion. The rats had heard food and fortune.

The turtles had simply heard that friends were gathering.

Perhaps that was why they had been invited.

Truth moves more like a turtle than a rat. It takes its time. It carries what matters with it. And eventually, without fanfare, it arrives exactly where it belongs.

Michael stood among the people who loved him, beneath seven rows of golden lights, with absolutely no attention being drawn to him whatsoever.

At least, that was the official Association position.

Meanwhile, Concorde Number Two…

Just as everyone began to believe the evening might end peacefully, Captain David tapped his glass and announced that a special neighborhood meeting had been scheduled to discuss the future of Concorde Number Two.

He would provide no further details, except to say that the matter involved a proposed flight plan, an unidentified mechanical noise and three flamingos who appeared to know far more than they were willing to disclose.

Bob immediately opened a fresh burgundy binder.

Greg asked whether the Concorde could be placed in a retirement account.

The bears moved closer.

Somewhere beneath the hedge, a rat began taking notes.

But that is a matter for the next meeting.

Reginald’s Commentary

As the unofficial HOA observer and only resident who has reviewed these proceedings while standing on one leg, I offer the following findings.

First, a report stating that no rodents were observed inside a kitchen should not be interpreted to mean that the rodents have left the neighborhood. They may simply be attending an investment meeting, reviewing the catering arrangements or seeking legal advice.

Second, turtles are not shell companies. They may, however, offer a more dependable long-term outlook than certain investments presented by Greg Featherman.

Third, Abby’s appointment as unofficial greeter, cake inspector and director of neighborhood security is hereby confirmed. Her compensation shall continue to consist of treats, praise and unrestricted access to the people she loves.

Fourth, the gathering for Michael required no permit. Seven rows of ten golden lights constitute decorative illumination and should not be interpreted as evidence of any particular number, occasion or unauthorized celebration. Michael is deeply loved. That is the only official explanation necessary.

Fifth, Ann’s family is welcome to return at any time, regardless of whether they establish a wildlife analytics company, modernize the HOA computer systems, sell flamingo automobile radios, insure the turtles, remodel Florida, move to Arizona or attempt to reorganize Café Chaosa before breakfast.

The flamingos’ written notes remain under review.

The bears have declined to cooperate.

Concorde Number Two will be addressed at the next meeting, assuming Captain David provides a flight plan, Bob locates the appropriate binder and the rats do not obtain voting rights before then.

Until that time, residents are advised to keep their food sealed, their investment information private and their cake well above rat level.

There comes a point in every family gathering when someone inevitably asks the question.

“What time is everyone getting here?”

It’s an innocent enough question. Unfortunately, it’s also one that absolutely nobody ever answers correctly.

Some people arrive an hour early because “we were already dressed,” while others pull into the driveway twenty minutes late carrying a casserole that somehow requires immediate refrigeration and three separate serving spoons. Then there are the people who call from five minutes away to say they’re “on their way,” despite the fact that everyone knows they haven’t actually left the house and aren’t nearly ready to leave.” Families are wonderfully predictable that way.

And thank goodness.

Because if every gathering unfolded exactly as planned, we’d have nothing worth remembering.

That morning, Cork & Dagger Reserve awakened exactly as it always does with the palms swaying lazily against another impossibly blue Florida sky. The fountain outside the clubhouse burbled away as though it had absolutely no idea that complete nonsense was only hours away.

Abby had already completed her morning patrol of the lanai, confirming that no unauthorized squirrels, suspicious geckos, or emotionally unstable iguanas had breached the perimeter. Satisfied that the neighborhood remained reasonably civilized, she accepted payment in the form of a dog biscuit and resumed supervising from the shade.

Michael sat in his favorite chair, coffee in one hand and a book in the other The rest of us skim headlines. Michael reads as though every author deserves to be understood.

I, however, was accomplishing remarkably little. I rearranged the flowers, straightened the napkins, checked my phone, straightened the flowers again, wandered into the kitchen, forgot why I had gone there, returned to the living room, and straightened the flowers one more time.

Michael lowered his book just enough to look at me. “You’re nervous.”

“I’m not.”

“You’ve arranged those flowers four times.”

“They’re tropical.”

“They’re identical to how they were fifteen minutes ago.”

“I know.”

“So why move them?”

I smiled.

“They seemed restless.”

He laughed.

“I think I’m married to someone who’s hiding something.”

“Probably.”

The previous week’s Concorde landing had finally become one more chapter in official Cork & Dagger Reserve history.

The Landscape Committee had concluded that the sonic boom had not, in fact, altered the emotional stability of the hibiscus.

One golfer reluctantly admitted his slice had existed long before supersonic aviation entered the neighborhood. Big surprise!

The gentleman whose pool noodles allegedly migrated across his patio continued requesting an independent investigation.

Naturally, the HOA had formed a subcommittee.

Around nine-thirty, Captain David appeared. He never simply arrives; he makes an entrance. White linen shirt. Navy loafers. Mirrored sunglasses. He carried the easy confidence of a man who had flown some of the world’s most magnificent aircraft—and had somehow chosen to spend his retirement entertaining himself with our homeowners association.

“Good morning, Annie. Please tell me everything is under control.”

“It absolutely is.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“You shouldn’t.”

He grinned.

“It makes life much more interesting.”

“I was afraid you’d say that.”

Just then, Bob MacMurphy came marching across the clubhouse lawn carrying a ladder over one shoulder and a carefully rolled banner under the other. Deborah followed a respectful distance behind, not because she needed to, but because experience had taught her that enthusiasm occasionally required supervision.

You see, Deborah and Bob had accumulated an impressive collection of garage mishaps, yoga injuries, and emergency room visits, followed by concerned calls from hospital social workers who somehow concluded that there was a victim. Deborah thought the whole thing was so gloriously absurd that it became one of her favorite stories to tell.

Bob climbed halfway up the ladder before anyone asked the obvious question.

“What exactly are you hanging?”

Without looking down, he answered proudly. “The banner.”

Deborah looked at both of them. “I see.”

No, she didn’t. To be fair, neither did anyone else standing within fifty feet of the banner.

“It’s for tonight.”

“What does it say?”

He unfurled it dramatically.

Across brilliant tropical blue letters were four mysterious words.

FEAR THE ALGORITHM

Silence.

Captain David admired it.

I admired Captain David’s ability to look innocent.

Deborah folded her arms. “Bob...”

“Yes, dear?”

“Do you know what that means?”

“No.”

“Then why are you hanging it?”

Bob looked genuinely surprised.

“Captain David asked me to.”

Captain David nodded solemnly. “It seemed like an excellent idea.”

Deborah looked at both of them. “I see.”

No...she didn’t and neither did anyone else.

Within fifteen minutes, the mystery had spread through Cork & Dagger Reserve faster than news of an unauthorized mailbox color.

Greg Featherman arrived carrying his laptop. “I’ve figured it out.”

Bob looked relieved. “You have?”

“Fear the Algorithm is obviously an artificial intelligence company.”

Bob frowned. “I thought they were a band.”

“A band?”

“Well...”

Bob pointed toward the banner. “...doesn’t it sound like a band?”

Greg considered this. “It does.”

John-Mike wandered into the conversation wearing what can only be described as a tropical explosion masquerading as a shirt.

“I’ve already had T-shirts made from the last time they played.”

“You what?”

He proudly held one up.

“Ninety-seven dollars,” he announced, “and their world tour was right here in Cork & Dagger Reserve, because every world tour has to start somewhere!”

Bob blinked. “Have you sold any?”

“Twelve.” John-Mike smiled. “People love merchandise.”

Frankly…he wasn’t wrong.

Meanwhile, Geraldine quietly slipped through the clubhouse doors. She looked around cautiously before exhaling.

“You made it!” I whispered.

“Barely.”

“You look exhausted.”

“I’ve resigned.”

“From the Beautification Committee?”

“That...”she sighed,”...and five others.”

“What happened?”

“They thanked me for my service.”

“That sounds nice.”

“It was,” She paused, “Then they appointed me Chairperson of the Committee for Recruiting New Committee Members.”

I laughed so hard I nearly spilled my coffee. Too funny, when do interviews begin? 🤣

She looked positively defeated. “I’ve come here to hide.”

“You’ve come to the right place.”

Just then, someone poked their head into the clubhouse.

“Geraldine?”

She froze. “...Yes?”

“We were wondering if you might…”

Geraldine promptly said a resolute “NO.”

The poor gentleman blinked. “I haven’t actually asked the question yet.”

“You were going to and the answer is NO.”

He smiled politely. “Fair enough.”

As he walked away, Geraldine looked at me and whispered, “I think I’m getting better at boundaries.”

“I’d say you’re making remarkable progress.”

One by one, familiar faces drifted into the clubhouse.

Not with fanfare but just the comfortable rhythm families have always understood.

Mom, Denise, Debra, Loretta & Sue immediately found Deborah.

Within moments they were discussing centerpieces as though they had chaired floral committees together for decades.

Steve appeared carrying folding chairs. “Where do these go?”

Captain David answered before anyone else. “Somewhere magnificent, like around the pool.”

Steve looked at me. “Is he always like this?”

“Only when he’s awake.”

Brad wandered in behind him. “I heard there’s a concert tonight.”

Bob looked delighted. “See?”

Greg added, “Or a product launch, or..a new ticker symbol…”

Captain David smiled. “Something like that.”

Dennis disappeared toward the lake where Gerald the turtle appeared to be inspecting the shoreline with unusual authority. Nobody questioned why.

Around here...the wildlife has opinions.

And for the first time all morning...

I stopped fussing and simply stood there watching, listening to the laughter and conversations.

Abby making her rounds as Official Director of Hospitality.

Friends greeting one another as though no time had passed, neighbors becoming family and family becoming neighbors.

There are moments when life quietly reminds you that wealth sometimes has very little to do with money.

It has everything to do with who walks through the door when there’s no reason other than simply wanting to be together.

I looked over at Michael who was helping Bob straighten the banner.

He was still smiling and still completely unaware that everyone else had already figured out something he never would.

Tonight wasn’t about a concert, or artificial intelligence, or avoiding social media or even whatever Fear the Algorithm was supposed to be.

It was about community and somehow...without ever trying...Michael had spent years quietly helping build one.

🌴 Chaos Moment #1

The Band’s Rider Becomes an HOA Matter

There is something wonderfully optimistic about Bob MacMurphy. If you tell Bob that a world-famous band is coming to Cork & Dagger Reserve, he doesn’t question the premise, he simply starts preparing.

“I’ve downloaded three articles on backstage hospitality requirements,” he announced proudly.

Captain David looked up. “You’ve done what?”

“The rider.”

“The what?”

“The band’s rider.”

Greg leaned over.

“Oh, that’s the list of things performers request.”

Bob nodded. “Exactly.”

Deborah slowly closed her eyes.”Oh, Bob…, you’ve learned from my experiences!”

“I printed extra copies.”

Captain David, sensing entertainment, asked the obvious question. “What have you arranged?”

Bob unfolded six neatly typed pages.

“Fresh tropical fruit.”

“Excellent,” said Captain David.

“Sparkling water.”

“Nice.”

“A humidity-controlled room.”

Captain David blinked. “I’m sorry?”

Bob looked confused. “Instruments warp. I’ve also requested twelve white orchids, imported mineral water from Iceland, artisanal cheeses, and a bowl containing exactly forty-seven green M&Ms.”

Greg frowned. “Why forty-seven?”

Bob adjusted his glasses. “I couldn’t remember whether famous bands wanted all the green ones removed or only the yellow ones.”

John-Mike looked impressed. “I’d attend that concert.”

Deborah gently placed a hand on Bob’s shoulder. “My dear...”

“Yes?”

“There actually isn’t a rider.”

Bob thought about that for a moment. “I suppose the fruit will still be delicious.”

“It absolutely will.”

🌴 Chaos Moment #2

Greg Accidentally Launches a Company

Meanwhile...

Greg Featherman had become increasingly convinced that Fear the Algorithm wasn’t entertainment, it was entrepreneurship. “I’ve prepared a prospectus.”

Bob looked impressed. “I’ve prepared name tags.”

Captain David smiled. “I’ve prepared absolutely nothing.”

“That’s because,” Greg explained, “you’ve been busy with logistics.”

Captain David nodded solemnly. “I certainly have.”

Within twenty minutes, Greg had recruited three residents into what they believed was an investment opportunity. He wasn’t quite clear with them and one thought he was joining a book club, another believed it was a pickleball league and the third admitted she had only signed the clipboard because Bob smiled at her.

Greg unveiled a flip chart.

Across the top he had written:

FEAR THE ALGORITHM

Disrupting Human Thinking Since 2026

Bob applauded enthusiastically. “I love a mission statement.”

At that exact moment, Michael wandered over.

“You do realize Fear the Algorithm is my band?”

Captain David answered before anyone else. “Which makes the confusion increasingly difficult to explain.”

“I’ve noticed,” Michael said.

Captain David smiled. “You’ll understand tonight.”

Michael nodded. “I look forward to playing for our audience.”

As he walked away, Greg whispered, “He’s going to love the presentation.”

Captain David quietly replied, “I’m counting on him loving something else.”

Geraldine Finally Learns the Magic Word

Poor Geraldine. She had barely been free from committee obligations for two hours when someone else approached carrying a clipboard.

“Geraldine...” She immediately held up one finger (no, not that one, Geraldine would never do that).

“No.”

“But—”

“No.”

“We were just wondering if—”

“No.”

“It would only take—”

“No.”

The gentleman lowered his clipboard. “I haven’t actually finished the sentence.”

Geraldine smiled kindly. “I know, and the answer ‘NO’ means NO.”

He nodded respectfully. “I admire your consistency.”

“I’ve been practicing.”

Deborah leaned toward me. “I think she’s finally adapting to Florida.”

“I think she’s finally adapting to HOAs.”

Geraldine overheard us. “NO.”

We burst into laughter.

There are some mornings when you wake up expecting absolutely nothing extraordinary to happen. The coffee is brewing, the Diet Coke is fizzing, the Happy-cast podcast is blaring from the laptop, the palm trees are swaying, Abby is conducting her morning inspection of the lanai, Michael is reading something profound, and somewhere in the distance a flamingo is contemplating life.

Then there is the morning when Captain David announces that he is flying the Concorde into Naples.

You just know it is going to be one of those days.

For those of you who have never visited Cork & Dagger Reserve, let me explain something. We are a lovely tropical community filled with wonderful people, beautiful landscaping, abundant wildlife—especially during HOA meetings—and enough committees to govern a small European nation.

Somewhere along the way, we collectively decided that no event, whether it involves Christmas decorations, replacing a mailbox, trimming a tree, or landing one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history, should occur without first consulting the HOA.

Naturally, Captain David skipped that step.

There are moments in life when you realize that no matter how carefully you plan, chaos has already left the station.

Or, in this case, the airport.

It all began when Captain David announced that he would once again be flying Concorde Number Two into Naples. In most neighborhoods, this would simply be considered impressive. Here in Cork & Dagger Reserve, however, the obvious first question was not whether the aircraft would arrive on time.

It was whether the HOA had approved supersonic travel.

You think I am kidding?

I am really not, especially because the HOA board members are the very people who bought not one, but two of those lovely flying machines.

Apparently, no one had fully considered the sonic-boom issue.

Captain David, of course, remained blissfully unconcerned. Piloting one of the most beautiful aircraft ever designed tends to give a person a certain confidence. Besides, he had far more important things on his mind.

On board were Ann’s—yes, my—mother Marge; my brothers Steve, Brad, and Dennis; my sisters Denise and Debra; and my sisters- and brothers-in-law Loretta, Sue, and Russ. They were all coming to experience our little slice of paradise while helping us celebrate a very special birthday.

Or at least our version of paradise.

Because paradise—and birthdays, as we have learned—come with guidelines.

Before the Concorde even began its descent, Reginald had already called an emergency HOA meeting.

Again.

Apparently, someone had expressed concern that the aircraft might generate what was described as “unauthorized tropical breezes.”

I was not entirely sure what that meant. To be fair, I do not think Reginald knew either. I have an even stronger suspicion that the person who filed the complaint did not know.

Still, paperwork was produced, as paperwork is always produced.

There it was: typed, printed on linen paper, placed in a protective sleeve, and inserted neatly into a three-ring binder.

Around here, no absurdity is complete until it has been properly documented.

🌴 Chaos Moment #1: The Sonic Boom & the Crooked Hibiscus

✈️ A Most Distinguished Arrival

As Concorde Number Two made its graceful approach, carrying its precious cargo of familial passengers, I could not help thinking how excited everyone must be to experience paradise.

Little did they know they were about to witness something far more entertaining than Florida sunshine.

They were about to witness an HOA emergency.

Within twenty-seven minutes of the Concorde appearing on the community radar, three separate residents claimed that the sonic boom had caused their hibiscus blossoms to lean slightly to the left.

Several golfers insisted that their hooks and shanks had become more pronounced. There was also a brief discussion regarding whether additional bogeys and mulligans should be allowed on Thursdays following a supersonic landing.

But I digress.

One gentleman insisted that his pool noodles had migrated several inches overnight.

An emergency Landscape Committee meeting was scheduled immediately, and Deborah MacMurphy was notified.

No conclusions were reached.

The refreshments, however, were excellent.

A turtle took the time to write something down.

🦩 From the Desk of Reginald

Residents,

After careful review, the Board has determined that Concorde may continue landing, provided it does not exceed Mach 2 while passing over the pickleball courts.

Furthermore, any aircraft capable of spilling a resident’s Chardonnay or Chianti shall be subject to immediate architectural review.

Also, John Mike’s shirt has now been classified as its own weather system.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The funny thing about communities like ours is that every neighborhood has one person who quietly keeps everything grounded.

For us, that person is Michael.

Since arriving in Florida, he has experienced quite a pivot in his legal career. He has gone from practicing primarily in estate planning and administration to representing aliens, birds, fish, turtles, and assorted forms of wildlife before the HOA.

Nothing fazes him.

While everyone else was measuring sound levels, debating aviation regulations they had discovered on Google approximately twelve minutes earlier, and discussing whether the Concorde should have been painted a more community-appropriate shade of beige, Michael simply smiled.

He watched the entire spectacle with the expression of a man thinking, You could not invent these people if you tried.

“You know,” he said, “normal neighborhoods just wave when guests arrive.”

One resident was photographing the aircraft. Another was photographing the person photographing the aircraft. Someone else had already begun drafting what appeared to be a strongly worded letter.

“No,” I replied. “We’re much more efficient.”

He is probably right.

The funny thing about Cork & Dagger Reserve is that somewhere beneath the complaints, committee meetings, mailbox regulations, escalating HOA fees, and occasional supersonic aircraft, there really is a wonderful little community.

People look after one another. They laugh together. They celebrate together, even while debating acceptable hedge heights and questioning why they are required to trim their own trees while already paying dearly for a landscaping crew.

Especially then.

Perhaps that is why I enjoy writing these stories so much.

Every neighborhood has its characters.

Ours simply happens to include a flamingo named Reginald who firmly believes excessive happiness requires prior architectural approval.

And somehow, that feels perfectly normal now.

Meanwhile, Greg Featherman saw an opportunity.

More on that shortly.

🌴 Chaos Moment #2: Geraldine Accidentally Volunteers for Life

Meanwhile, Geraldine made what may become the greatest tactical error in modern HOA history.

Someone asked whether she would be willing to “help out.”

Being Scottish, gracious, and unfailingly polite, she smiled.

Now, if you have lived long enough, you understand that the words help out have changed more lives than most lottery tickets. Unfortunately, in homeowner association language, smiling constitutes legally binding consent.

Before Geraldine realized what had happened, she had been assigned additional committee duties. She was reviewing applications for decorative pelicans, approving acceptable shades of mailbox mulch, and listening to an earnest thirty-minute debate regarding whether flamingo pink was “too emotionally expressive.”

I have not seen her since.

Should anyone locate her, please tell her that we miss her.

And that there is still time to escape.

🌴 Chaos Moment #3: Bob Declares War on Intellectual Mediocrity

Bob MacMurphy, meanwhile, continued his personal mission to elevate the intellectual standards of the neighborhood by distributing what he referred to as “light reading” around the pool and at the Chianti Whine Lane Booked Club meeting.

He also wanted to support his wife Deborah in her pursuit of beautification excellence following her appointment to the HOA board.

With those noble objectives in mind, Bob carefully arranged the following titles around the pool and on the meeting tables:

• The Complete History of Proper Hedge Heights

• Fifty Shades of Beige

• The Ambiance of Decorative Shrubbery

• Bonsai Forever

• The Art of Clever Garbage Concealment

• The Walmart Annual Report

Attendance at both the pool and the Booked Club meeting declined dramatically shortly thereafter, reaching what some have described as historic lows.

Most residents claimed they were busy trimming something.

The refreshments remained spectacular for those who stayed.

A falcon stood quietly in the back of the gathering, taking notes.

🌴 Chaos Moment #4: Greg Discovers Compound Interest During an Aviation Emergency & Bob Has Supporting Literature

Greg Featherman saw the arrival of an international supersonic aircraft as something altogether different. “Friends,” he announced, clapping his hands together with the enthusiasm of a man who had just discovered a new exchange-traded fund, “while everyone is distracted by airplanes, this seems like the perfect opportunity to discuss investing.”

Only Greg could witness one of the most beautiful aircraft ever created descending gracefully into Naples and conclude that what the neighborhood truly needed was a portfolio review.

Oddly enough, several residents nodded.

Mostly because there were cookies.

Bob MacMurphy, who never attended a gathering without what he referred to as “supplemental educational materials,” quietly opened his ever-present leather satchel.

“I anticipated this,” he said.

From somewhere deep within the bag, Bob produced three neatly tabbed binders entitled Investing for the Mildly Confused, Dividend Aristocrats and Other Fine Neighbors, and The Complete History of Market Corrections Since the Invention of Buttons.

“I’ve color-coded the important chapters.”

No one was surprised as Bob color-codes everything. Even his bookmarks have bookmarks!

Greg beamed. “Excellent. I’ll handle the market outlook.”

Bob adjusted his reading glasses. “I’ll cover the footnotes. Michael will be pleased!”

Together, they looked less like two neighbors and more like professors who had accidentally wandered into a cocktail party.

By the time Greg finished explaining the miracle of compound interest, Bob had somehow distributed seventeen handouts, four laminated charts, and a bibliography.

• Three residents joined the Chianti Whine Lane Investment Collective.

• Two signed up accidentally.

• One thought she was registering for the dessert committee.

• No one complained.

The cookies really were exceptional.

A parrot recorded the entire meeting on her cellphone while Gerald the turtle considered creating a supplementary spreadsheet for Greg and Bob.

🦩 Reginald’s Commentary

Residents,

The Board has reviewed the formation of the Chianti Whine Lane Investment Collective.

Financial planning is hereby permitted, provided all pie charts remain within approved community color guidelines.

Furthermore, dividends shall not be discussed during official Flamingo Appreciation Hours.

Violators may be sentenced to attend Bob’s four-hour seminar:

🌴 Chaos Moment #5: Excessive Elegance

The Concorde Has Landed

Just as Captain David stepped gracefully onto the tarmac, applause broke out across the crowd.

Unfortunately, so did a debate over whether clapping after 2:00 p.m. required prior HOA approval.

Someone actually volunteered to research the bylaws.

Sometimes I wonder whether these people realize Netflix exists.

Captain David, ever the gentleman, accepted an official citation for “Excessive Elegance” with remarkable grace and he thanked the Board for recognizing his achievements and asked whether they offered volume discounts.

I am fairly certain the HOA president did not appreciate the joke.

The rest of us did.

By sunset, the excitement had faded, the visitors had settled in, and the neighborhood returned to its normal rhythm.

The fountain bubbled.

The palm trees swayed.

John-Mike somehow changed into an even brighter shirt.

Reginald stood proudly beside the lake, convinced that he had successfully protected the community from unauthorized aviation enthusiasm.

Of course, we must not forget that the birthday celebration is still coming next week.

The truth is that every neighborhood has its little dramas.

Ours simply happens to have flamingos, Concordes, tropical shirts, committees, talking wildlife, and friends who can transform complete nonsense into wonderful memories.

And honestly?

I would not have it any other way.

🦩 Reginald’s Official Closing Remarks

Residents,

The Board wishes to remind everyone that excessive joy remains under seasonal review.

Concorde arrivals should be limited to Thursdays, unless they occur on Wednesdays.

Decorative flamingos are reminded to remain emotionally supportive but structurally compliant.

Residents are further reminded that any aircraft exceeding the speed of sound must first submit Form HOA-27B: Application for Temporary Excessive Happiness.

Flamingos may not be startled without seventy-two hours’ written notice.

John-Mike’s shirt has once again been reviewed by the Architectural Committee. The Committee has concluded that although the shirt technically violates three sections of the community color palette, there is currently no legal mechanism capable of dimming it.

Finally, should anyone discover where Geraldine wandered off to, please ask her to finish reviewing mailbox application number 472.

Meeting adjourned.

The events described above are fictional.

Well, mostly. And mostly is a term of art.

No actual HOA board was injured during the creation of this Chronicle, although several egos may have required light polishing afterward.

Captain David continues to maintain a perfect safety record to Shanghai and back.

Reginald insists that he is an elected official despite the complete absence of an election, a ballot, or any evidence that residents were consulted.

John Mike’s shirts remain visible from low Earth orbit.

Geraldine has retained counsel regarding involuntary committee assignments.

Greg Featherman is not offering investment advice, although he is almost certainly offering cookies.

Bob MacMurphy’s bibliography is available upon request, although requesting it may result in the delivery of several binders and a municipal-bond seminar.

No turtle was forced to prepare a spreadsheet.

Here they come….again!

If you ask longtime Floridians when snowbird season officially begins, you’ll receive a variety of answers. Some insist it starts with the first New Jersey license plate spotted in the grocery store parking lot. Others claim it’s the moment every restaurant develops a forty-five-minute wait and every roundabout becomes an exercise in faith. And still others liken it to downtown Chicago traffic coming to Naples as there is nothing like waiting for 3 lights to get through to the other side.

The residents of Cork & Dagger Reserve know better. Now that they’ve added this fabulous amenity, Snowbird season begins the moment Captain David lands the Concorde; even if it is in July!

Now, aviation historians will be quick to point out that the Concorde retired from commercial service years ago and they’re absolutely right. Fortunately, reality has never been given voting privileges at Cork & Dagger Reserve; and it never will.

Every Thursday morning, just after sunrise, Captain David gently guides the elegant aircraft toward Southwest Florida carrying a most unusual passenger list. Gone are the celebrities, diplomats, and captains of industry who once filled its cabin. Today’s travelers are authors, investors, gardeners, attorneys, accountants, entrepreneurs, dog lovers, and people who have quietly reached that wonderful season of life where curiosity finally outweighs certainty.

Captain David never calls them passengers. He calls them future neighbors because he knows that they will come for the vacation and they will stay for the….and the jury is out on that one.

As the Concorde glides over the sparkling waters of the Gulf, his familiar voice fills the cabin. “Ladies and gentlemen, if you look out the windows on your left, you’ll see beautiful Marco Island. To your right is downtown Naples, where shopping bags have somehow become an accepted form of cardiovascular exercise.”

Soft laughter fills the cabin.

“And directly ahead,” he continues, “is Cork & Dagger Reserve, where the fish are biting, the flamingos are debating something important, and the HOA has only issued three violation notices this morning.” He pauses. “Two of which are currently under appeal.”

No one asks whether he’s joking because experience has taught them not to.

Among today’s arrivals is Geraldine Sterling Maxwell, an accomplished Scottish barrister whose courtroom wit is exceeded only by her remarkable ability to identify exceptional paralegals for law firms across the United Kingdom. Geraldine has spent decades untangling trusts, estates, contracts, and family disagreements before concluding that people are infinitely more complicated than the law itself.

She has dreamed of flying aboard the Concorde since childhood.

When Captain David’s invitation arrived, she packed before finishing her afternoon tea looking forward to a short vacation.

She had no idea what adventures would greet her!

Several rows behind her sit Robert and Deborah MacMurphy, lifelong Midwesterners whose marriage has comfortably survived blizzards, raising dogs, career changes, and forty years of spirited conversations.

Bob is a retired CPA who has never met an annual report he didn’t like. While most travelers pack novels, Robert packs Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters and SEC filings. He believes footnotes are among the most underrated forms of literature ever written. “If management is hiding something,” he often says, “it usually isn’t on page one.”

Deborah smiles every time.

A retired attorney herself, Deborah has redirected her formidable analytical skills toward gardening. She doesn’t simply admire landscapes. She redesigns them. Neighborhood entrances, flower beds, irrigation systems, ornamental grasses—nothing escapes her trained eye.

As the Concorde circles Cork & Dagger Reserve one final time, Deborah leans toward the window. “Oh, Bob…”

He lowers the annual report he’s been reading.

“What is it?”

“The Palm trees, they are simply stunning, just magnificent! I can already see the improvements I can make here!”

Bob removes his gaze from the scintillating prospectus on his tray and glances outside. “We are only staying for a couple of weeks however I was looking at the property values.”

“Of course you were.”

Their marriage has always worked because Bob notices numbers. Deborah notices everything else.

There is one thing, however, upon which they have never disagreed. Dogs. The MacMurphys don’t own pets, they raise children with four legs.

Their home has always included at least two beloved dogs and, years ago, one exceptionally dignified turtle named Winston, a bird, and a magnificent aquarium!

When Gerald the Turtle eventually learns about Winston, he quietly announces,

“I believe these people belong. I am going to turn in their HOA application at the next meeting!”

Waiting at the terminal is John Mike, Cork & Dagger Reserve’s unofficial Director of Hospitality. Nobody remembers appointing him and truthfully, nobody would dream of replacing him. He is the neighborhood’s most enthusiastic entrepreneur.

Dressed in a brilliantly embroidered tropical shirt and wearing one of his famous Livin’ the Dream caps, John Mike greets every newcomer with a handshake, a smile, and a canvas welcome bag containing neighborhood maps, fishing tips, local business coupons, a schedule for the Chianti Whine Lane Investment Collective, and another Livin’ the Dream cap—because one can never have too many.

Tucked inside every bag is a simple card.

Relax. You’re home now. Remember, you can check out any time you like; but you can never leave!

Long before anyone reaches the neighborhood entrance, the birds have already documented every arrival.

Reginald Q. Woodstork, Recording Secretary of the Chianti Whine Lane Investment Collective, is busily updating the official minutes while three ibises diligently take notes. The pelicans coordinate luggage, the osprey provides aerial surveillance, the fish exchange market rumors beneath the bridge, and the flamingos…

…well…

The flamingos have formed another committee.

Meanwhile, the HOA Board prepares for its monthly meeting, By the time the Concorde’s wheels kissed the runway, news of the newcomers had already spread throughout the neighborhood. The pelicans handled transportation logistics, the ibises took notes with astonishing efficiency, the osprey maintained aerial surveillance, and the flamingos, appointed entirely by themselves as Directors of Public Relations, ensured everyone knew the story before the facts had an opportunity to catch up.

In addition, the HOA Board faced a crisis of its own.

Recent meetings had become so spirited that new rules had become unavoidable. Following what local historians would later refer to as The Great Mulch Uprising, The Battle of the Pickleball Nets, and an unfortunate disagreement involving patriotic lawn and garage door decorations, ornamental grasses, and a flying zucchini, the Board reluctantly adopted a revised Code of Conduct.

Among the newly approved rules were the following:

🦩No throwing vegetables during public comment.

🦩Flamingos may attend meetings but are prohibited from voting.

🦩Gerald the Turtle shall serve as Parliamentarian whenever awake.

🦩Abby, Chief Happiness Officer, may adjourn any meeting by requesting belly rubs.

🦩All landscaping complaints shall first be reviewed by Deborah MacMurphy. Note, she is not yet a resident, has not been informed and has not even attended her first meeting.

In fact, given the fact that the MacMurphy’s are simply here for a short respite and have no idea they are applying for homeownership in Cork & Dagger Reserve, this will be quite a surprise for both the MacMurphys!

In true Cork & Dagger Reserve style, the final motion passed unanimously.

As Geraldine disembarked the Concorde, she was greeted by Dale Snitterman.

“I understand you’re an attorney.”

Geraldine smiled politely. “A barrister.”

“Even better, we need you!”

Snitterman looked around cautiously to make certain no Board members were within earshot.

“Our HOA has…experienced a few challenges.”

“What sort of challenges?” Geraldine asked.

Snitterman sighed. “Last month’s meeting required parliamentary intervention.”

“The month before that someone attempted to amend the architectural guidelines with interpretive dance.”

“And the landscaping committee has threatened litigation over ornamental grasses.”

Geraldine considered the matter carefully. “I see.”

“We were wondering…”. Snitterman swallowed nervously. “…whether you might consider serving as Special Counsel to the Association.”

Geraldine adjusted her spectacles. “May I review your governing documents first?”

Marget handed her the binder and she opened it, read exactly three pages and closed it again.

“My goodness.”

“What?”

“You’ve been operating under this?”

“For thirty-seven years.”

Geraldine smiled the sort of smile opposing counsel had learned to fear.

“I believe……we should begin with Article One.”

Geraldine glanced toward the clubhouse and marveled at the flamingos appeared to be staging a peaceful demonstration.

Gerald the Turtle was quietly explaining Robert’s Rules of Order to an increasingly confused pelican while one of the fish had somehow become Chairman of the Pond Committee.

John Mike was selling commemorative HOA Survival Kits.

Deborah had already begun measuring the distance between two royal palms.

bob was reviewing the HOA reserve study with genuine enthusiasm and thoughts about how he could become involved.

Captain David simply smiled as he’d seen this sort of thing before on any given Thursday.

Word spread through the neighborhood faster than a pelican spotting fresh fish.

By sunset the unofficial headlines read:

BREAKING NEWS

Scottish Barrister Accepts Position as HOA Special Counsel.

Flamingos Concerned.

Lawyers Encouraged.

Ornamental Grasses Decline to Comment.

And then…

🌪 Bonus Chaos Moment™

• Geraldine accepted the position of HOA Special Counsel.

• She has not yet attended her first Board meeting.

• Three Board members have already updated their résumés.

Gerald watched the Concorde taxi toward the terminal and smiled.

• Robert completed two annual reports before baggage claim.

• Deborah quietly redesigned the HOA entrance while waiting for her luggage.

• Gerald officially welcomed Winston the Turtle into the Honorary Turtle Hall of Fame.

• Reginald completed twenty-seven pages of meeting minutes before the meeting actually began.

• Abby approved every new resident.

The HOA approved none of them.

People often say they come to Southwest Florida for the sunshine.

After years of careful observation, I respectfully disagree.

The sunshine merely encourages people to open the front door.

It is the neighbors who persuade them to stay.

I’ve also learned that accountants secretly possess excellent senses of humor, gardeners quietly change neighborhoods one flower bed at a time, attorneys rarely retire from asking good questions, dogs are exceptional judges of character, and turtles should never be underestimated.

Especially Gerald.

What Knots Landing Taught Me About Freedom, Legacy, and the Next Chapter of Life

As I sat down to revisit Knots Landing for the first time in decades, I expected nostalgia. Mind you, it was streaming on Amazon Prime Video and there are roughly 344 episodes…my screen time went off the charts! Sleep is overrated! :-)

I expected familiar faces, unforgettable theme music, shoulder pads that somehow once seemed fashionable, and enough neighborhood drama to keep therapists, attorneys, and probably a few accountants comfortably employed for generations.

What I didn’t expect was to meet an entirely different person.

Me.

Forty years ago, I watched Knots Landing the way millions of Americans did. I wanted to know who was marrying whom, who was betraying whom, who was buying another company, and whether Abby Cunningham would somehow negotiate her way out of yet another impossible situation. Like everyone else, I watched for the romance, the cliffhangers, the corporate intrigue, and the irresistible promise that next week’s episode would somehow be even more dramatic than this week’s.

This time, I found myself asking an entirely different question.

“I wonder if anyone has updated their estate plan.”

Apparently, I’ve changed.

Then again, perhaps that’s exactly what life is supposed to do.

Over the past forty years, I’ve been fortunate enough to live several different lives. I’ve been a banker, a fitness entrepreneur, a life and business coach, a bookkeeper, an investor and trader, and now an author who has discovered that humor often opens hearts more gently than advice ever could. Along the way I also became a wife, a mother, and—one of my greatest joys—a grandmother.

Looking back, I don’t see those roles as disconnected careers.

I see them as different classrooms.

Each one quietly taught me another way to understand people.

Each one changed the questions I ask.

And each one prepared me to sit down forty years later and watch the very same television show with entirely different eyes.

The show hadn’t changed.

The viewer had.

Karen MacKenzie no longer struck me simply as the patient neighbor who somehow held everyone together. Today I see a woman whose quiet integrity gave everyone around her a steadier place to stand. Valene’s story touched me in ways it never had before. When I was younger, I mostly saw heartbreak. Today I see remarkable courage—a woman who refused to let disappointment define her and who somehow kept choosing hope when life repeatedly handed her reasons not to.

Abby still fascinated me. Some people collect souvenirs, Abby collected leverage.

I imagined sitting across from her with a coaching notebook. “Abby,” I’d ask, “have you ever considered negotiating for a peaceful weekend instead of another acquisition?”

She’d probably buy the resort before checking in.

The coach in me admired her confidence.

The trader in me admired her ability to recognize opportunity before everyone else.

The human being in me quietly wondered whether she ever gave herself permission to believe she already had enough.

Greg Sumner looked different this time as well. Years of studying markets have taught me that stock charts are really stories about people. Confidence, fear, patience, discipline, greed, optimism, resilience; they all show up eventually, whether you’re watching Wall Street or a California boardroom. Greg’s strategic mind fascinated me, but what lingered most wasn’t his business success.

It was Laura. She didn’t leave Greg a larger company, she left him a better heart.

That may be one of the finest definitions of legacy I’ve ever encountered.

Gary reminded me that redemption is rarely a straight line. Paige reminded me that identity isn’t inherited—it is built one courageous decision at a time. Mac quietly demonstrated that every family and every neighborhood needs someone whose character remains steady when life becomes chaotic. Ben never stopped asking questions, and I’m grateful for people like that. Curiosity keeps us growing. Even JR Ewing, who wandered over from Texas often enough to stir the pot, reminded me that thinking boldly can change the course of a life—provided ambition never outruns character.

As I wandered through that familiar cul-de-sac, another realization quietly settled in.

Perhaps that’s why Knots Landing has remained so beloved.

It was never really about the scandals, it was about the neighborhood.

The writers understood something every storyteller eventually discovers. People don’t fall in love with plots, they fall in love with people.

Looking back, I don’t think it’s any coincidence that I eventually found myself creating a fictional neighborhood of my own.

The residents of Cork & Dagger Reserve may not own oil companies (they are certainly trying), but they certainly know how to turn an HOA meeting into an Olympic event. Flamingos have opinions. Gerald the turtle dispenses unsolicited wisdom. Reginald the wood stork tries valiantly to keep order while everyone else enthusiastically contributes to the chaos. Beneath the satire, however, the questions are exactly the same as the ones asked on that famous California cul-de-sac.

How do ordinary people build extraordinary lives together?

Another influence quietly changed the way I began answering that question.

Living with an estate planning and estate administration attorney has taught me that wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and beneficiary designations are never really about paperwork. They are about people. They are love expressed through preparation. They are one final act of kindness that says, “I cared enough to make this easier for you.”

The more I listened to Michael’s work, the more I realized something unexpected.

As a coach, I spent years helping people build meaningful lives.

Michael helps families protect the legacy of those lives.

Different professions, shared purpose.

Perhaps that’s why this year’s Fourth of July feels especially meaningful.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence. We will celebrate with fireworks, flags, parades, family picnics, and backyard barbecues, just as generations before us have done. Those traditions matter because they remind us of the extraordinary courage it took to imagine a different future.

But this year I’ve also found myself thinking about another kind of independence.

🇺🇸 freedom to reinvent ourselves.

🇺🇸 freedom to forgive ourselves for the chapters that didn’t unfold as planned.

🇺🇸 freedom to discover gifts we never knew we possessed.

🇺🇸 freedom to close one chapter with gratitude and begin another with hope.

Maybe every character in Knots Landing was searching for that kind of freedom.

🇺🇸Val through hope.

🇺🇸Abby through ambition.

🇺🇸Greg through achievement.

🇺🇸Gary through redemption.

🇺🇸Paige through self-discovery.

🇺🇸Mac through quiet conviction.

🇺🇸Laura through love.

Perhaps they weren’t so different from the rest of us after all.

As a wife, I’ve learned that love is built in ordinary moments. As a mother, I discovered that children remember far more than our words. As a grandmother, I’ve come to appreciate that legacy suddenly becomes wonderfully personal. You stop thinking only about your own future and begin thinking about the world you’re helping leave behind.

I’ve also come to believe that freedom isn’t something we celebrate only once a year.

It’s something we practice every single day.

Forty years ago, I wondered who would win, today, I wonder who quietly made the people around them better.

Maybe that’s what legacy has always been; not simply what we leave to people, but what we leave in them.

So this Independence Day, as America celebrates 250 years of extraordinary freedom, I’ll probably spend a little time watching fireworks. I’ll certainly spend a little time revisiting old friends on Knots Landing. Then I’ll wander back down Chianti Whine Lane, where Gerald undoubtedly has another opinion, Reginald is trying to restore order, and someone is almost certainly filing an HOA complaint over patriotic decorations that exceed community guidelines.

Some things never change. Thankfully…People do. And perhaps that is the greatest freedom of all.

Previously on Chianti Whine Lane…

Last week, Gerald’s missing cooler became the center of seventeen complaints, one beverage investigation, several flamingo denials, and a general sense among residents that Cork & Dagger Reserve had once again drifted dangerously close to becoming its own sovereign nation.

Captain David, who had flown the Concorde across the Atlantic with grace, precision, and dignity, discovered that none of his aviation training had prepared him for Gerald, Margaret St. James, or flamingos acting under what appeared to be implied committee authority.

Michael remained calm, Abby remained suspicious, the fish remained better informed than the humans, and Reginald issued yet another statement denying avian involvement in everything except good posture.

Naturally…

Things got worse.

Saturday morning arrived at Cork & Dagger Reserve with golden Florida sunshine, theatrical humidity, and the unmistakable sense that something expensive, unnecessary, and probably subject to a special assessment was about to happen before breakfast.

Ann stood on the clubhouse veranda holding coffee in one hand and the latest HOA agenda in the other. What had originally been advertised as a “brief community update” had expanded into forty-two pages of amendments, appendices, procedural notes, cooler-related revenue questions, bird-management concerns, and one alarming section titled Future Transportation Opportunities for Visionary Communities.

Michael leaned over her shoulder.

“That can’t be good.”

“No,” Ann said. “Nothing involving transportation, vision, and Margaret St. James has ever ended quietly.”

Beside them, Abby lifted her head, stared toward the eastern parking lot, and sighed.

Michael noticed immediately.

“That’s the bad sigh.”

“It is,” Ann said. “That’s the sigh she uses when humans are behind schedule recognizing danger.”

Across Lake Chaosa, the fish had gathered near the dock in what appeared to be another underwater board meeting. Chairman Bubbles, a bass with suspicious authority and a troubling command of parliamentary procedure, appeared to be presiding over an emergency session involving aerial shadows, brass keys, unauthorized wake turbulence, and the emotional burden of flamingo proximity.

At exactly 8:02 a.m., Captain David arrived, immaculate as always. Navy blazer. Polished shoes. Calm expression. A man who had crossed the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound and carried dignitaries, celebrities, honeymooners, and several nervous first-time flyers through the clouds.

Unfortunately, none of that had prepared him for Gerald.

Gerald appeared moments later pulling a cooler so large it had reflective tape, side mirrors, chrome cup holders, and what appeared to be its own temporary registration tag.

No one spoke.

Gerald smiled. “I’ve expanded operations.”

Captain David closed his eyes. “Gerald.”

“Yes?”

“Please define operations.”

“Premium beverage logistics, mobile hospitality deployment, aviation support, and confidential cooler-based opportunities.”

Michael lowered his coffee. “That last phrase is where lawsuits begin.”

Before Gerald could elaborate, Captain David stopped walking. His face changed. He turned toward the parking lot, removed his sunglasses, looked once, looked again, and whispered four words no one expected to hear in a Florida HOA before breakfast “My Concorde moved.”

Everyone turned.

There, parked diagonally across three handicapped spaces, two visitor spaces, one golf cart charging station, and the edge of the butterfly garden, sat the Concorde.

Not a model, Nor a decoration, and not an inflatable purchased during a regrettable theme-party misunderstanding.

The Concorde.

Its elegant nose pointed toward the pickleball courts. One wing stretched majestically over the hibiscus hedge. Its landing gear rested partly on a painted space marked COMPACT CARS & GOLF CARTS ONLY, which now seemed less like a parking instruction and more like a cry for help.

Margaret St. James emerged from the clubhouse carrying her famous three-inch binder. She stopped, stared & adjusted her glasses.

Then she asked, with terrifying calm, “Who approved this?”

Gerald raised his claw. “It wouldn’t fit in one space.”

Captain David inhaled slowly. “Gerald, did you relocate my aircraft?”

“I optimized it.”

“You optimized a Concorde?”

“It gets better morning sun here.”

Mac (the other attorney) arrived quietly behind them, carrying a worn leather briefcase and the reassuring presence of a man who had spent decades helping people survive matters that began with bad decisions and ended with legal invoices. He surveyed the aircraft, the flamingos, the cooler, the binder, and Captain David’s expression.

“In forty years,” Mac said, “I have represented banks, families, estates, corporations, condominium boards, and one alarmingly aggressive garden club. I have never represented an HOA attempting to regulate supersonic passenger aircraft.”

Michael shook his hand as he contemplated that there was more than enough work for multiple attorneys, “We’re delighted you’re here.”

Mac glanced again at the Concorde. “I suspect I’m going to earn my fee.”

🍷 Chaosa Moment #1

The Flamingo Ground Crew Certification Program

Just then, twenty-seven flamingos marched across the lawn in formation.

Not wandered.

Marched.

Each wore a tiny reflective vest. One carried orange marshalling paddles. A pelican on the clubhouse roof appeared to be taking notes. An egret directed imaginary traffic with admirable confidence.

Captain David stared.

“No.”

Gerald looked proud.

“The birds volunteered.”

“They did not. They held elections.”

Michael whispered to Ann, “I’m beginning to think democracy has gone too far.”

The lead flamingo turned slowly, revealing a small sign around its neck.

NO COMMENT PENDING LITIGATION.

Sheriff Ramírez, arriving late and already regretting it, removed his hat.

“I don’t know whether this is a parking violation, an aviation incident, or a federal problem.”

Mac nodded.

“Yes.”

Inside the clubhouse, the emergency meeting began with the grim seriousness of a municipal hearing, the emotional maturity of a Thanksgiving argument, and the financial transparency of a magic show. Margaret banged the gavel.

“The purpose of today’s meeting,” she announced, “is to discuss unauthorized aircraft relocation, flamingo ground crew activity, lake-based interference, cooler revenue, and a strategic opportunity that may position Cork & Dagger Reserve as Florida’s premier supersonic lifestyle community.”

Captain David went pale. “Please tell me that sentence ends there.”

It did not.

Margaret clicked a remote. A PowerPoint appeared.

CONCORDE II: A STRATEGIC COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Holly, the bookkeeper, made a sound that was not quite a gasp and not quite a resignation letter.

Margaret continued. “Our reserve study consultant believes ownership of Concorde II could increase community prestige, enhance property values, attract discerning buyers, and distinguish Cork & Dagger Reserve from competing communities offering only ordinary amenities such as pools, clubhouses, and financial responsibility.”

Michael closed his eyes.

Mac removed his glasses.

Captain David gripped the table.

Gerald whispered, “I already designed the boarding passes.”

Everyone shouted, “GERALD!”

The Future Transportation Initiative

Margaret advanced the slide.

Projected budget categories included the Afterburner Reserve Fund, Mach 2 Noise Mitigation, Runway Landscaping, Flamingo Flight Attendant Training, International Snack Service, Pickleball Court Conversion Feasibility Study, Fuel Surcharge Assessment, and Concorde II Naming Rights.

Holly raised her hand.

“Margaret, QuickBooks does not have a category for afterburner maintenance.”

Gerald nodded. “I can make one.”

“No,” Holly said. “That is exactly what I fear.”

Captain David stood.

“My friends, I have flown heads of state, royalty, celebrities, nervous honeymooners, and once twenty-three opera singers accompanied by three emotionally fragile parrots. I have crossed the Atlantic in weather that would make lesser men reconsider gravity itself. But I must say this clearly: a homeowners association should not purchase Concorde II.”

Margaret wrote something down.

Captain David narrowed his eyes. “What are you writing?”

“Captain David, Chair, Aviation Committee.”

“I decline.”

“Noted.”

Michael leaned toward Mac. “Can she do that?”

Mac sighed.

“In this community, the question is rarely whether she can. The question is how many committees she forms before anyone stops her.”

At that moment, Captain David unfolded a navigation chart across the table.

Michael studied it. “That isn’t Florida.”

“No,” said Captain David. “That appears to be the Strait of Hormuz.”

“Yes.”

“Captain, why are you reviewing the Strait of Hormuz during an HOA meeting in Naples?”

Captain David smiled pleasantly. “I’ve been considering a cruise.”

The room fell silent.

Captain David’s Retirement Cruise

Annie lowered her coffee.

“You want to cruise Hormuz again?”

“Splendid scenery.”

“Isn’t it somewhat tense?”

“I prefer lively.”

Mac cleared his throat.

“Most retirees choose Alaska.”

“I’ve already seen Alaska.”

“The Caribbean?” Annie offered.

“I’ve already seen rum.”

Sheriff Ramírez whispered, “I suddenly miss the cooler investigation.”

Outside, the limousine arrived.

It moved through the gate with the slow confidence of money, mystery, unresolved family history, and possibly excellent tailoring. Four glamorous visitors stepped out as though they had come directly from a prime-time drama where secrets had consequences and everyone looked magnificent near a staircase.

Donna surveyed the clubhouse. “This place has scandal.”

Michelle smiled warmly at Ann. “And heart.”

Joan opened a leather portfolio. “And complicated emotional architecture.”

Nico looked at the Concorde, the flamingos, Gerald’s cooler, and Margaret’s PowerPoint. “This place doesn’t need management,” she said. “It needs publicity.”

Gerald (the turtle) beamed. “I have business cards.”

Everyone shouted, “NO!”

Mac greeted them with quiet affection, and for a brief moment, even Cork & Dagger Reserve seemed to soften. There was something steady about him, something decent and human beneath the absurdity, as though his presence reminded everyone that even in a world of flamingo aviation committees and supersonic HOA assessments, someone still believed in helping people through the mess with dignity.

Michael noticed. “You make rooms calmer,” he said.

Mac smiled. “Not this room.”

“No,” Michael agreed. “But it was worth mentioning.”

Abby, who had been watching Gerald’s cooler with increasing suspicion, walked behind it and barked once.

Everyone stopped.

Abby did not bark for entertainment. Abby barked for evidence.

Behind the cooler sat another cooler and inside that cooler was a smaller cooler and inside the smaller cooler was a velvet pouch.

Inside the pouch was a brass cylinder engraved with three words:

FOR MAC ONLY.

Mac opened it carefully and removed a yellowed document sealed with red wax and stamped with an emblem of a flamingo wearing aviator goggles.

Captain David leaned closer.

“I haven’t seen that seal since 1976.”

Ann sighed. “Of course you haven’t.”

Mac read silently, then looked toward Lake Chaosa. “It appears Cork & Dagger Reserve was once listed as an alternate emergency landing site.”

Margaret gasped, “This community was built around a lake, pickleball courts, and an aggressively marketed lifestyle concept.”

Captain David nodded. “From altitude, that can be misleading.”

Gerald raised his claw, “I may have painted lines.”

Everyone turned.

“What lines?” Annie asked.

Gerald pointed toward the pickleball courts.

🍷 Chaosa Moment #4

Runway 7-ish

Outside, the residents discovered that Gerald had painted long white stripes across the pickleball courts, the golf cart path, and several decorative pavers. At one end stood a handmade sign:

Captain David stared. “You cannot add ‘ish’ to a runway.”

Gerald shrugged. “It allows flexibility.”

Mac looked at Michael.

“I believe we have entered the doctrine of substantial aviation compliance.”

Michael nodded. “I was afraid of that.”

Then the Concorde’s lights flashed.

Captain David spun around. “No.”

A flamingo in a reflective vest lifted two wings and began directing traffic.

“No, absolutely not.”

The Concorde rolled forward six feet.

Margaret screamed.

Sheriff Ramírez reached for his radio, paused, and apparently decided there was no code for “retired supersonic aircraft taxiing through HOA property under flamingo supervision.”

The aircraft stopped with its nose pointed toward Lake Chaosa.

Gerald smiled.

“The fish requested a better view.”

There are sentences so ridiculous that conversation simply lies down for a moment.

🍷 Chaosa Moment #5

The Fish File an Objection

Beneath Lake Chaosa, Chairman Bubbles called the Fish Homeowners Association to order.

The bass voted to impose landing fees while the catfish recommended mediation & the bluegill demanded environmental impact studies.

The mullet attempted to introduce cryptocurrency.

The motion failed when everyone remembered that none of them possessed pockets.

Above the water, the lake began to bubble & the fish surfaced in formation.

The flamingos turned toward the water and the turtles vanished.

Abby stood beside Ann, perfectly still.

From the center of Lake Chaosa, attached to a tiny floating platform, rose the missing brass key.

Beneath it was a waterproof sign.

RUNWAY ACCESS REQUIRES PAYMENT.

Michael stared at the sign, then at the fish, then at the Concorde, then at Gerald, “I’m beginning to think the lake has better legal counsel than the HOA.”

Before anyone could answer, the Concorde’s cargo door opened.

A polished brass cylinder rolled down the ramp, bounced once, and stopped at Abby’s paws.

She sniffed it, sneezed and looked at Annie.

Michael picked it up carefully.

A label had been attached to the side.

DELIVERY TWO OF SEVEN.

Ann closed her eyes, “Seven?”

Gerald smiled, “I wondered when the rest would arrive.”

Captain David looked at him. “The rest of what?”

Gerald opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, a shadow passed over the community.

Everyone looked up.

Concorde II Appears

High above Cork & Dagger Reserve, another sleek aircraft circled in the brilliant Florida sky.

Captain David went completely still.

Mac closed his briefcase.

Margaret whispered, “Is that…?”

Gerald beamed.

Nico smiled.

The flamingos saluted.

And Captain David, with the haunted calm of a man who had just realized the HOA’s PowerPoint may have become prophecy, whispered: “Oh dear.”

Ann looked toward the sky.

Michael looked toward the lake.

Abby barked once.

Somewhere beneath Lake Chaosa, Chairman Bubbles approved the landing fee, a toll of sorts.

Because circling above Cork & Dagger Reserve was not just another aircraft.

It was…Concorde II, sonic boom included.

There are moments in life when one should stop, reflect, and ask a simple question:

“Have we perhaps gone too far?”

Unfortunately, nobody in Chianti Whine Lane had ever demonstrated any measurable interest in asking that question.

Which is precisely how the community found itself operating a Concorde. Not a model Concorde, not a simulator, not a commemorative display, an actual Concorde. Yes, a fully operational supersonic passenger aircraft parked proudly in Visitor Spot 7B beside the community pool.

The residents had grown remarkably comfortable with this arrangement.

The flamingos considered it visionary, the turtles considered it a transportation equity issue, John-Mike considered it branding and Michael considered it inspirational.

However, Frank considered it evidence. No surprise there!

And Reginald the Woodstork considered it exactly the sort of thing historians would eventually discuss in documentaries.

Which is why nobody paid much attention when trouble first arrived.

It came in the form of an envelope, a perfectly ordinary envelope.

The sort of envelope capable of ruining an otherwise delightful Florida morning.

Chaosa Moment #1: The Letter

The morning began beautifully.

The water in the community pool sparkled beneath a cloudless sky. Palm trees swayed lazily in the breeze. A pair of flamingos floated near the shallow end while discussing visor futures and leisure-sector momentum.

One flamingo adjusted his sunglasses. “We remain cautiously fabulous.”

Another nodded. “Agreed.”

Nearby, Michael sat beneath a striped umbrella wearing a bright LIVIN’ THE DREAM WEAR™ shirt while gently strumming his blue ukulele.

The music drifted across Cork & Dagger Reserve like tropical background music in a resort commercial nobody had asked for but everyone secretly enjoyed.

Abby stretched comfortably beside him. One eye remained open. Abby had learned long ago that whenever things became too peaceful around Chianti Whine Lane, disaster was usually approaching.

Ann sat nearby enjoying the morning.

For almost forty-five consecutive minutes, the community experienced complete stability.

This immediately raised concerns.

Across the pool deck, Margaret was reviewing a proposal titled:

Everything appeared perfectly normal, by Chianti Whine Lane standards.

Then she noticed the envelope. Margaret frowned.

Government envelopes rarely improved situations.

The return address read:

She blinked, then blinked again & then took a very large gulp of coffee.

Across the community, something shifted. No one could explain it.

Reginald certainly felt it.

Perched atop the observation platform overlooking Cork & Dagger Reserve, Reginald suddenly looked up from his notebook.

Years of experience had taught him that chaos often announced itself before it arrived.

Usually in subtle ways; a strange breeze; an unfamiliar vehicle.

Margaret stopping mid-sentence.

All of which ranked highly on the Disaster Probability Forecast.

Reginald slowly removed his reading glasses.

“The situation,” he noted quietly, “appears to be developing.”

Below him, Margaret immediately called an emergency meeting.

Which was never a good sign.

Within twenty minutes, residents filled the pool area. The flamingos arrived carrying clipboards, the turtles brought legal pads and Dale carried three binders.

John-Mike wore a promotional blazer.

Michael brought the ukulele, some lawyerly cynicism and some backing tracks.

Frank brought espresso, pessimism and charts.

Abby brought judgment, a tooth treaty and her cloud bed.

Margaret stepped forward. “We have received correspondence.”

The crowd gasped, one turtle fainted & A spoonbill dropped a mimosa.

Margaret continued. “The FAA would like to discuss our airline.”

Silence, complete silence.

Even Michael stopped strumming, the backing tracks continued on.

Finally, John-Mike smiled, “They’ve heard of us.”

Frank closed his eyes shuddering to consider what could come next.

Somewhere nearby, Abby quietly walked farther away dragging her clouds with her.

Moment #2: Gerald Escalates the Situation

As if the FAA inquiry wasn’t enough, a second crisis emerged.

Unfortunately, the second crisis was a turtle. Specifically:

Gerald had never fully recovered from the events of Episode 52, that being the disappearance of his luggage. The issue had begun innocently enough.

During the inaugural Concorde flight, Gerald had checked:

• and what appeared to be a rolling suitcase containing fourteen copies of HOA bylaws.

The problem?

Only Gerald arrived at the destination, the luggage did not & neither did the cooler.

Now three weeks later, Gerald still remained furious. At precisely 11:07 a.m., he arrived at the emergency meeting wearing a tiny necktie and carrying a stack of documents thicker than some graduate dissertations. Gerald never traveled without his complete archive of complaints, supporting exhibits, meeting minutes, and emergency transparency forms.

He approached the podium dramatically. “I demand answers.”

The crowd groaned.

Frank immediately ordered another espresso with a shot of Scottish whiskey.

Gerald continued. “The airline has failed to locate my emotional support cooler.”

A flamingo looked away suspiciously and another suddenly became fascinated by a nearby shrub.

Captain David stared at the horizon.

The evidence was mounting.

Gerald pointed dramatically toward the Concorde. “I have filed sixteen complaints.”

Dale looked impressed. “Only sixteen?”

Gerald nodded proudly. “Seventeen if you count the one against baggage uncertainty.”

Dale immediately wrote that down.

The turtles applauded, and the flamingos objected.

Margaret formed:

The FAA inspector who happened to be observing quietly removed his glasses and massaged the bridge of his nose.

Captain David noticed. Captain David understood.

The poor man had spent decades flying aircraft professionally. JoeBerg had never seemed so far away.

Nothing in his training had prepared him for emotionally distressed luggage, a crazy HOA and a turtle.

Chaosa Moment #3: Captain David Meets the FAA

The FAA inspectors arrived two days later.

Three vehicles entered Cork & Dagger Reserve shortly after noon. The inspectors stepped out carrying:

• notebooks,

• regulations,

• clipboards,

• and expectations.

All of which would soon be challenged.

The lead inspector appeared calm and professional. He had investigated:

• airports,

• maintenance facilities,

• commercial carriers,

• and private aviation operators.

He was not prepared for Chianti Whine Lane. Nobody sane could be!

Captain David greeted them professionally.

For one brief moment, things appeared normal.

The inspector paused. He must have been green with envy.

A turtle carrying a shareholder briefcase followed shortly thereafter.

Then Michael began performing:

The tour continued.

The inspectors reviewed:

The lead inspector stopped walking and he stared silently. The Concorde sat parked beside the pool.

Children played nearby.

A flamingo polished the nose cone.

SAME LEISURE. HALF THE TIME.

The inspector slowly removed his glasses and then put them back on.

The Concorde remained.

“So let me understand this correctly.”

Captain David nodded.

The inspector pointed. “That is a Concorde.”

“Yes.”

“And this is visitor parking.”

“Also yes. I identified another spot on our Hormuz Cruise ship, but to be frank, it is much easier to park here. The great news is that we are considering doubling our Concorde fleet. ”

The inspector looked toward Margaret, then Dale, then John-Mike, then back to Captain David.

A long silence followed.

Finally he asked: “Who approved this?”

Every single person pointed at someone else.

Above them, Reginald quietly opened a fresh notebook and wrote something down. The previous one had become insufficient.

“The situation,” he noted carefully, “has entered a new phase.”

And unfortunately…it was only getting started.

Part 2: The Situation Worsens Considerably

When we last left Chianti Whine Lane, three FAA inspectors were standing in stunned silence beside a Concorde parked in Visitor Spot 7B while a flamingo polished the nose cone and Michael provided what he described as “Acoustic Regulatory Jazzulele.”

Things deteriorated rapidly from there.

Not because the FAA inspectors were hostile. Quite the opposite.

They arrived with every intention of being reasonable.

The problem was that reason had not been seen in Chianti Whine Lane for several seasons, if ever.

The crisis began approximately twelve minutes after the inspectors arrived.

One flamingo approached the FAA delegation wearing:

The situation escalated quickly.

One flamingo claimed he had earned additional status credits through:

The others challenged all three.

The one everyone had been searching for.

The cooler at the center of seventeen formal complaints.

The cooler currently being used as a beverage station.

Silence filled the cabin.

A flamingo slowly lowered his drink. Another flamingo looked out the window, while a third flamingo attempted to whistle.

The inspector pointed. “Is that the missing luggage?”

Captain David closed his eyes.

Gerald arrived moments later. The reunion was emotional.

The litigation remained active.

The FAA inspectors updated their notes.

The notebook pages were now running low because nearly everyone was writing something down.

Three days later the findings were delivered.

The entire community gathered beside the pool.

Frank sat down, very slowly and ordered another whiskey.

Captain David looked relieved.

The FAA simply wanted to leave.

Captain David offered the inspectors a complimentary flight aboard the Concorde, fully aware they had no desire to become evidence in their own investigation. ✈️😂🦩

The flamingos upgraded guidance, the turtles continued litigation.

Gerald recovered his cooler and offered drinks to everyone on the pool deck.

Captain David updated flight schedules.

Michael strummed optimistically.

John-Mike launched:

Whenever John-Mike became excited, the chances of chaos increased dramatically.

Frank knew this, Reginald knew this & dear Abby certainly knew this.

Yet somehow nobody stopped him. “We have conquered leisure,” John-Mike announced proudly.

Margaret nodded. “We have?”

“So naturally the next step is aviation.”

Silence settled over the pool deck and even the flamingos stopped floating (yes, in the pool, where else?)……

There was then a bang, and a gallunk as Reginald’s briefcase fell off of the roof and his cassette tape recorder fell out onto the pool deck.

“What kind of aviation?” Frank asked carefully.

John-Mike clicked a remote and the giant screen beside the tiki bar illuminated instantly. A massive image appeared.

The Concorde. Quite simply the most beautiful passenger aircraft ever built.

Painted in tropical colors. Decorated with flamingos. And bearing the logo:

Chaosa Moment #1: The Proposal

Within forty-eight hours, Margaret had organized an emergency HOA meeting.

Residents filled the pavilion. Folding chairs stretched toward the pool. Flamingos occupied the front row. The turtles had already distributed briefing packets. Dale stood beside a projection screen wearing a serious expression usually reserved for people making terrible decisions with complete confidence.

The presentation began. A giant slide appeared.

The audience gasped.

John-Mike paced enthusiastically. “Imagine flying from Naples to Chicago in under four hours.”

Beside him, Abby quietly walked out of the meeting.

The board’s next decision somehow proved even more surprising.

If Chianti Whine Lane was going to own a Concorde, it needed a pilot.

Three days later the residents gathered near the entrance to Cork & Dagger Reserve beneath banners welcoming:

The inclusion of flamingos was, initially, informal. The inclusion of woodstorks was… deliberate.

🌴 A Suspiciously Festive Dawn

Easter Sunday arrived quietly in Cork & Dagger Reserve. Too quietly. The kind of quiet that suggests something is either deeply wrong… or HOA-approved. No leaf blowers, no passive-aggressive email blasts, no early-morning compliance walks and no reminders about “proper hose usage for vehicle cleanliness.”

Even the flamingos… were still. The lawn gnomes were not. They sensed a disturbance.

It was then, that a single pastel egg appeared. It was perfectly placed; centered, aligned, in fact, aggressively aligned.

It was smack in front of Margaret’s three time award-winning lawn gnome. The gnome did not like diverted attention.

However, he wrote something down.

🐰 Chaosa Moment #1: The Bunny Breach

At approximately 7:03 a.m., witnesses reported a large, unidentified rabbit. He was moving with purpose, carrying inventory and deploying lovely surprises all over the neighborhood.

By 7:12 a.m., the neighborhood had been overtaken. It was replete with eggs and baskets. They were everywhere!

In driveways, on mailboxes, in shrubs, under statues, and but certainly not least, Margaret’s visibly shaken gnome.

The Bunny did not pause. Why would he? He had a system.

On Easter.

Moments later, an egg struck Dale. Then another, and several more. Children nearby were laughing. Dale… was not.

Soon, he and Easter Bunny found out that eggs are not ideal for pickleball…and he was waiting for the wrath of Margaret who mysteriously appeared with every infraction.

Scratching his head, Michael was adding up the amount of new clients he was obtaining in his practice when he branched out to new niches. Talk about abundance!
