A young Viking woman was buried at Skonager, close to Varde in Western Jutland, a find that has revealed something very rare in Danish archaeology: pieces of her clothes that have survived for nearly 1,300 years. The burial dates from the 8th century has been excavated by Arkæologi Vestjylland. It is exceptional in that it not only includes very rare textiles but also the woman’s teeth, making it possible to learn much about her health, clothing and other elements of her life.

Viking graves are very rare in this area of Jutland, and the acid soil of the region usually destroys organic materials after a few decades. Therefore, the preserved clothing in found this grave, called ARV 661 by archaeologists, is almost unprecedented. According to an Archaeology Magazine report, the burial shows that the woman was in a coffin placed in a ditch, her head resting carefully on a stone pillow.

Metal Salts Shielded the Viking Dress from Decay

As the brooches corroded over thirteen centuries, the metallic salts they released created a chemical microenvironment in which decay-causing microbes struggled to survive. The metal effectively shielded the fibers pressed against it. Small pieces of cloth survived on both the front and back of each brooch, meaning researchers can study the outer layer of the woman’s clothing as well as the inner layer that rested against her skin. Similar preservation has allowed rare glimpses of Viking-era jewelry and textiles elsewhere in Scandinavia, but seldom in Denmark itself.

So why did this fabric survive when others have rotted away? The answer lies in the two concave brooches, made from silver and bronze, which were part of this particular Viking apparel. These brooches are called skålspænders in Danish and were the most popular attachments for Viking women. They were used to hold the shoulder straps of the apron dress worn over a linen or woolen undergarment. As explained by the National Museum of Denmark, there used to be strings of beads often hung from the brooches and the dress could also be covered with woven patterns.

Although the metallic brooches corroded over the period of thirteen centuries, they released metallic salts creating a chemical micro-environment that inhibited microbes that would normally cause decay. The metallic surfaces formed preventive shield for any inner fibers touching it. As a result, pieces of fabric were found on both sides of the brooches and could be studied on both sides, crucially including the layer that rested against her skin.

Similar preservation has allowed rare glimpses of Viking-era jewelry and textiles elsewhere in Scandinavia, but seldom in Denmark itself.

A Heirloom Brooch and the Colors of the Viking Age

A complete team of experts has come together about the discovery. The Vejle Conservation Center is examining the funeral assemblage grain by grain, while the textile expert Lise Ræder Knudsen is working with the surviving fibers, examining the weave, patterns, thread spinning, and quality of the cloth. The samples will be taken for radiocarbon dating and will reveal if the brooches and the dress were made at the same time. This is important, because one of the brooches shows traces of an old repair indicating that the object could have been passed from generation to generation in the family before being buried with the young woman.

Working with the Textile Colors of the Viking Age Project, researchers Ulla Mannering and Charlotte Rimstad, are conducting dye analyses to find out the original colors used in the fabric. Color had a certain social and economic value in Viking Age clothing. For instance, blue obtained either from woad or imported indigo was expensive and used mainly in the burials of members of wealthy families. The project is supported by the Agnes Geijers Foundation for Nordic textile, research set up in honor of Agnes Geijers, a Swedish scholar whose studies of scoop brooches and Viking Age clothing laid the foundations of the field. Her classic drawing of a dress fastened with scoop brooches now serves as a reference point for the team.

Teeth That Tell the Story of a Viking Girl’s Life

The woman herself is also being brought into focus. The Anthropology Unit at the University of Southern Denmark will study her teeth for evidence of her age, health, diet, and possible migration, as well as signs of physical stress during childhood or adolescence. Isotope analysis and dental enamel defects may give information for establishing the woman’s place of origin, famine, and illnesses endured by her in the course of life.

The Skonager burial joins a growing series of finds reshaping our understanding of Viking women, from the female warrior confirmed at Birka to the noblewoman buried with her dog in a Norwegian boat grave. As the analyses progress, archaeologists hope eventually to reconstruct the dress this young West Jutland woman wore, and perhaps to redraw Agnes Geijer’s famous interpretation with her in mind. For a region where Viking burials so seldom survive, the girl with the scoop brooches is already a treasure.

A young woman that died in 17th-century Poland and was buried with a sickle across her neck and a padlock around her toe probably grew up locally, belonged to a family with considerable wealth and had had a diet low in animal protein. These are the conclusions of a recent multidisciplinary study.

According to Phys.org, researchers used DNA analysis, stable isotope analysis, textile analysis and archaeological excavation of her tomb to reconstruct how this woman lived until approximately 17 to 19 years of age. They also revealed that the famous ‘vampire burial’ was altered after initial burial, while the body was still partly held together by soft tissue. Yet the reason she inspired such fear remains a mystery.

Two Barriers Against the Restless Dead

In 2022, at Pień in the north-central region of Poland, archaeologists excavated Grave 75 containing a woman with a triangular iron padlock affixed to her left big toe and a curved iron sickle laid on her neck, with the edge of the sickle pointing at her throat. Other examples of vampire graves in Poland have similar restraints, however this is the first example of a grave containing a sickle and padlock together suggesting it was deemed a particularly dangerous corpse to deal with.

The term “vampiric” encompasses a large variety of burial styles and the use of this term can fail to include the broader context of the underlying belief systems in use. In the early modern period, there was a widespread fear that revenants (the undead) would return from their graves and cause harm through the spread of illness, misfortune, or violence to others. To combat this, communities used several methods to keep revenants under control, such as iron blades, locks, and stones placed on their bodies.

These practices are also found in Bulgaria and were even present in Greek antiquity through placing heavy stones on the burials of the deceased. However, there is little evidence to conclude that these individuals held beliefs similar to the literary depictions of Dracula as depicted in later literature and films, and the ‘vampire graves’ is just a modern tag.

Gold Threads, Poor Diet

The discovery of fine textile fragments found beside the skull has changed the interpretation of this woman as an outcast without a defined place in society. The woven silk galloon that was found was not only made of silk, but with threads of ‘pure silver and gold-gilded wire’. In other words, the materials were so expensive that they indicate that this woman was likely born into a well-to-do family. Researchers state that even the materials used in burial garments for royals at the time are often not made from such fine threads.

But even though she came from a very wealthy background, it appears her wealth did not guarantee her protection from being treated with suspicion after death.

Chemical signatures in her teeth suggest that she grew up in or near the Pień region, though similar isotope values occur elsewhere in Central Europe. Her mitochondrial DNA belonged to haplogroup J1c2c1, a maternal line found across Europe, but it cannot by itself establish that she was a Scandinavian outsider. Carbon and nitrogen isotope results nevertheless place her among cemetery adults who consumed little animal protein. As with other ancient DNA and isotope studies, the combined evidence reveals mobility and diet more reliably than social identity.

A Grave Reopened Before Decay

The disturbed earth surrounding the bones suggests the grave was reopened while the body was still decomposing. Although this young woman’s left arm was displaced, the skeleton was still substantially articulated, indicating soft connective tissue was still present between the bones at the time the grave was reopened.

While the original burial was likely when the padlock was placed, the sickle was probably added later, perhaps during the second intervention. The spike and sharp edges of the sickle also support this.

‘Copper-green’ staining on the palate and neck bones may indicate contact with copper or copper-based material, either directly or indirectly. The copper-bearing material entered the mouth or nose after death, but its identity and precise timing remain unresolved. No further information is available about the source of this material.

The new paper, however, found no skeletal trauma or disease that could explain her death, and CNN’s report stresses that her ancestry evidence is limited to a short maternally inherited sequence. Her cause of death is still unknown. So too is the event that led someone to reopen her grave.

Fear at the Edge of the Village

The cemetery is located outside of the main village near a crossroads and it is not recorded on any historical maps that have survived. This cemetery doesn’t have crosses or other religious items commonly associated with Roman Catholic burials indicating that it may have some relationship with Protestantism, but we cannot determine a specific denomination from the available evidence.

As a result of excavations that have occurred at Pień, there were more than 100 graves found, with many of those graves containing atypical internments. Therefore, Pień serves as a valuable case study illustrating how societies treat those they deem problematic or dangerous. Similar finds throughout Europe (for instance, a child buried with the skull placed face-down in Chełm) illustrate how societies attempted to manage the uncertainty surrounding the dead through various means.

In Poland-Lithuania in the 17th Century, war, starvation, plague, and harsh weather constantly pressurized local populations to evaluate their neighbors. An unexpected death could lead to someone being classified as a suspect, regardless of whether they had good fortune because they wore nice clothing. An example of this was grave 75 which holds a remarkable example of this dichotomy where an affluent teenager was mourned, feared, reburied, and shackled. Science can now recover parts of her biography, but not the accusation that followed her into the earth.

A homeowner getting ready to create a new patio in Rebild, Denmark, has unintentionally revealed the biggest collection of Viking silver ever found in the country. At around 18.5 kilograms and is nearly three times the size of the previous holder of the Danish record, providing evidence of Viking wealth, trade and commerce.

A Garden Surprise

The resident made the find by pure chance when he struck metal while clearing stones, grass and gravel to build a new terrace at his home. He thought he had unearthed pieces of fence or iron but started digging and found, jewelry, coins and silver bars.

“It should have just been a few hours of hard gardening to remove stubborn grass, stones and gravel in connection with a new tiled terrace, but it was the biggest surprise of my life,” says the finder, according to Nordjyske Museer.

The treasure comprises around 700 individual items, including the quantity of silver ingots, arm rings, whole coins and coin remnants, cut silver items, and a small Thor’s hammer. Roughly 320 items, weighing a total of 6.4 kilograms, were found within the original unbroken ceramic vessel. The treasure is thought to have been buried somewhere around the 10th century.

Silver as Currency

The finding is described by Torben Sarauw, archaeologist and head of cultural heritage at Nordjyske Museer as a rare chance to learn how wealth was accumulated and managed by Vikings.

“This is a find of great importance for our understanding of the Viking Age in Denmark. Not just because of its size, but also because the treasure so clearly shows how silver functioned as wealth and means of payment in the Viking Age. It’s like finding a safe from the Viking Age,” says Sarauw quoted by Nordjyske Museer.

The fact that the hoard is mainly comprised of ingots, jewelry and hacksilver, and less of coins shows that Viking silver acted as a currency whose value was determined by weight. That means that pieces of silver could be cut depending on the amount of silver needed for a transaction. Some of the ingots and silver pieces are of a certain weight, proving that the treasure was organized rather than being just a random accumulation of valuable metal.

Mysterious Runes and Global Connections

Two Anglo-Saxon silver pennies were minted during the reign of Edward the Elder, who ruled from AD 899 to 924. Their presence provides archaeologists with an important chronological clue, since the treasure must have been buried after the coins entered circulation.

One of the more intriguing items in the hoard is a silver bar with a runic inscription. The inscription possibly spells out “hutu”, although its meaning is unclear. The experts examining it think it could refer to a person’s name, an ownership stamp, or some other way of identification.

The treasure also includes coins from the far-off corners of the world – Arabic dirhams and Anglo-Saxon coins have been found here, too. Such a find suggests that even though Denmark was a Viking settlement, its trade ties were established with the Islamic world and other parts of Europe.

Furthermore, two Anglo-Saxon silver pennies were discovered, which were minted in the reign of Edward the Elder, who ruled from AD 899 to 924, which means that the treasure was buried after the coins entered circulation.

Rebild: A Viking Wealth Center

This huge hoard is not the first major Viking discovery made from the Rebild area. In 1971 another silver hoard dating back to the 10th century was found in this area; it contained about four kilograms of small ingots of smashed jewelry as well as pieces of silver. Moreover, a few years ago, six Viking gold arm rings weighing 762.5 grams were discovered in the nearby area known as Rold site. Researchers believe the high concentration of valuable discoveries will allow us to support the theory that the Rebild area was deeply integrated into the network of trade and culture including countries like Scandinavia, Baltic states, England, and Islamic states.

Just why the newly found hoard was buried is unknown, and further archaeological investigations are limited as the area is built-up. Under Danish law, the treasure is classified as Danefæ, meaning it belongs to the state, thus it will be studied by National Museum of Denmark. As for the finder, he will be rewarded according to the current market value of the silver plus a finders’ payment.

Nordjyske Museer hopes that the find will eventually be shown at Fyrkat Viking Museum together with other Rold find and thus they will be able to fit in these finds into the larger picture of Viking Age in North Jutland and activities of Harald Bluetooth and forming of Denmark in the 10th century.

Archaeologists in Inner Mongolia have uncovered the earliest clearly recognizable pairing of dragon and phoenix figures yet found in northern China. The clay figurines came from a 4,300-year-old tomb at the Zhaizita Stone City site in Jungar Banner, Ordos City. Radiocarbon dating places the burial around 2300 BC, during the middle-to-late Yongxingdian Culture within the broader Longshan cultural horizon.

The rectangular earthen-pit tomb contained an individual buried face-up with limbs extended and head oriented northeast. A turquoise-inlaid jade bi disc lay beside the right side of the neck. On either side of the body, excavators found carefully positioned clay sculptures: a dragon-shaped figure on the right, aligned with the deceased’s head, and a phoenix-shaped figure on the left, rendered in a soaring or rising posture. The symmetrical arrangement creates a balanced ritual composition around the burial.

According to Global Times, Sun Jinsong, head of the Inner Mongolia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, described the find as highly significant:

“This is the earliest and most clearly defined dragon-phoenix combination found in northern China so far. It pushes back the materialized representation of dragon and phoenix to the Longshan era,” he said.

No earlier discovery in the region has provided such a clearly defined physical pairing of the two forms.

High-Status Burial and Ritual Symbolism

Based on stable isotopes, the occupant’s diet was mainly based on millet-based agriculture but had significantly higher quantities of animal protein (or other high-status food items). The jade piece and the deliberate arrangement of the figurines suggests that this person had a high rank in society. The Zhaizita site itself is a large settlement of stone walls covering an area of approximately 420,000 m2, which represents the development of fortified settlements and specialization in craft production and more complex social and ritual structures throughout northern China during the late Neolithic period.

The dragon and phoenix have always played an important role in Chinese culture, with their symbolism taking on many forms over time. They were associated with the emperor’s authority, the harmony between yin and yang, and the chance of success. Their appearance together within a funerary setting as far back as 4000 years ago gives us an insight into how these meanings began to take shape prior to the emergence of the first dynastic states of China.

The discovery adds an important northern Chinese reference point to the longer history of these motifs. Earlier jade carvings from the Hongshan culture (roughly 6500–5000 years ago) already featured dragon-like forms, yet the Zhaizita pairing is the first clear physical combination of dragon and phoenix in the region.

Insights into Longshan Beliefs

The research team interprets the position of the symbolic creatures in relation to the remains to demonstrate a relationship between the animals, with death, status and spiritual afterlife beliefs. The phoenix’s soaring pose and the dragon’s alignment with the body suggest intentional ritual meaning rather than random decoration. All of this has provided significant insight into the spirituality of the Longshan community at a time when larger settlement patterns and more hierarchical communities were beginning to emerge in the overall cultural area surrounding the Yellow River.

Further study of the figurines, the jade disc and the settlement context will help clarify how these symbols evolved and spread. For now, the Zhaizita tomb provides the earliest tangible proof that the iconic dragon-phoenix pairing was already meaningful in northern China by around 2300 BC.

The excavation was carried out by the archaeological team of the Inner Mongolia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. Official reports emphasize that the discovery enriches understanding of early Chinese civilization’s pluralistic yet unified development and supplies valuable material for research into Longshan-period spiritual beliefs and burial practices.

Spiked Club May Have Delivered Visby’s Final Blows

A spiked war club may have delivered the final blow to some of the men killed in the Battle of Visby in 1361. A new forensic and experimental study, presented at the 25th European Paleopathology Association meeting in Berlin matched the weapon’s distinctive injuries to square-shaped holes found in skulls from the battle’s mass graves.

The result adds a grim detail to one of medieval Europe’s most remarkable archaeological records and may preserve evidence of coordinated attacks.

A Mass Grave Preserves a Medieval Battle

Danish soldiers invaded Gotland in July, 1361 culminating in the Battle of Visby. The bodies of about 1,800 soldiers are thought to have been buried in the mass grave at Korsbetningen, many still in armor. This find has provided a wealth of physical evidence regarding the realities of medieval warfare.

The grave was first excavated early in the 20th century, and has provided an insight into how swords, axes, spears, and other weapons were used during that time. It has also shown how effective they were, based on the evidence found on bones and armor from the Battle of Visby. Using structured light scanning and microphotogrammetry of seven crania, Patrick Randolph Quinney and colleagues reconstructed penetrating trauma to study the fracture patterns surrounding the injury sites. This has provided more information regarding the nature of injuries sustained from sword cuts, axe wounds, and other weapons commonly used during the medieval period.

Testing Crossbows, Axes and Clubs

The square lesions had previously been attributed to several possibilities, including a crossbow, a spiked axe and a spiked club. To test them, the researchers made authentic reproductions and struck animal-bone targets covered with ballistic gelatin and replica armor. Motion capture and four-dimensional telemetry recorded the movements and impact mechanics, while forensic fractography helped compare the experimental damage with the archaeological wounds.

Only the spiked club reproduced the square defects closely enough to support the match. The official study abstract therefore describes the club as the likely cause, while carefully qualifying the conclusion as a possibility rather than a certainty. Because the research has been presented at a conference and has not yet appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, the findings should be regarded as a strong working interpretation rather than the final word.

A Possible Coup de Grâce

Perhaps the most disturbing finding is the order in which the injuries occurred. Some of the skulls exhibit multiple weapon types, and at least one sequence places an axe wound before a strike that resulted in the square-shaped opening. The authors propose that multiple attackers may have rendered a victim incapacitated prior to another assailant delivering the final blow, or coup de grâce, using a club.

That interpretation also complicates older descriptions of the Gotland defenders as an untrained peasant force overwhelmed by professional soldiers. The Visby warrior brought to life through facial reconstruction demonstrates the violence recorded in a single skull, while the comparison with the battlefield remains from Towton and Stirling suggests that similar penetrating injuries may be identifiable elsewhere.

An Important Step Forward

The study’s real significance lies in its method as much as in the weapon it identifies. Using three-dimensional modelling of bones along with fracture analysis, recreating weapons and utilizing motion capture, they have illustrated how experimental archaeology can test alternative claims regarding injuries sustained during battles in the Middle Ages.

The significance of the Battle of Visby mass graves is enhanced due to the speed at which the soldiers were buried, as well as the inclusion of many of the soldiers’ personal effects. Other battlefield discoveries, such as the medieval mass grave found in England, show how burial context can preserve evidence long after historical documents cease to exist.

As further research examines the bodies, armor and ancient DNA, the battlefield may reveal not only what weapons were used, but also how those weapons were used at close range.

Ancient Greek Elites May Have Worn Meteorite-Iron Rings

A chemical study of 91 ancient iron objects suggests that meteorite iron was not merely a rare curiosity in Bronze Age Greece. At least ten rings were probably made with metal that fell from the sky, and their burial contexts indicate that this unusual material may have functioned as a conspicuous badge of power among Minoan and Mycenaean elites. The discovery shows trade, technology, and display meeting in a single object.

Nickel points to a celestial source

The finding comes from Iron in Greece in the second millennium B.C.E., a study by astrophysicist and chemist Matthieu Gounelle and archaeologist Eleni Mantzourani in the Journal of Archaeological Science. Published in August 2026, the research examines a time when iron was still exceptional in the Aegean. The researchers used non-destructive X-ray fluorescence to examine objects from 33 archaeological sites and 15 museums, dating broadly from 3,000 to 4,000 years ago.

Most of the objects were made from smelted terrestrial iron. Thirteen, however, were rings or fragments of rings containing significant nickel, a chemical clue that the metal may have come from meteorites. In the paper’s abstract, nine are described as very likely and one as quite likely to have a meteoritic origin, while three remain less certain; Science News summarizes those ten as probably meteoritic. That distinction matters because meteorite iron naturally contains nickel, unlike most smelted Bronze Age iron.

The result places the Aegean evidence within a much wider history of “heavenly metal.” An ancient Egyptian dagger linked to King Tutankhamun is already known to have been fashioned from meteoritic iron, while meteorite swords and an iron arrowhead from Bronze Age Switzerland show that the material circulated across several ancient societies. Its unusual origin amplified cultural value more than practical utility.

Rings of status in the Aegean

The archaeological settings strengthen the case that the rings were more than experiments in early metalworking. With one exception—the specimen from the Anemospilia temple on Crete—the nickel-bearing rings came from tholos and chamber tombs, where they lay alongside gold vessels, amber jewelry, and seals carved from stone. Several were signet rings, with broad engraved faces that could have marked identity, authority, or access to a particular social network. Their placement among valuables supports, though does not prove, deliberate elite display.

Science News quoted Mantzourani describing the result as evidence that “meteoritic iron was considered a very precious metal used for producing objects of special value and for a high-status group of people,” probably Minoan and Mycenaean elites. That may explain why this rare material appeared in rings rather than ordinary tools.

A fashion that vanished

The study also raises a question about supply. Meteorites are comparatively scarce in Greece and Crete, where many would have fallen into the sea, so Gounelle and Mantzourani propose that the raw material may have arrived through established Bronze Age trade routes from Egypt, whose deserts preserve abundant meteorites. If correct, the rings were not just objects made from a remarkable substance; they were also evidence of long-distance exchange and elite control over rare goods. The Egyptian connection remains a proposal, not a proven source for every ring.

The fashion appears to have ended around the 12th century BC, close to the upheavals that brought down the Mycenaean palace system. In the Aegean, however, the rings’ disappearance may reflect the collapse of palatial networks, the loss of Egyptian connections, changing tastes—or simply the difficulty of obtaining a scarce and prestigious material. The evidence suggests a short-lived fashion in which symbolism mattered as much as metal.

The Cascajal Block, an unassuming serpentinite slab discovered in the late 1990s in the Mexican state of Veracruz, has completely reshaped our understanding of early literacy in the New World. Unearthed by road builders in a pile of debris in the village of Lomas de Tacamichapa, this artifact contains previously unknown characters that researchers believe represent the earliest writing system in the Americas. The discovery has pushed back the timeline of writing in Mesoamerica by several centuries, providing compelling evidence that the ancient Olmec civilization possessed a fully developed written language.

Dating to the early first millennium BC, specifically around 900 BC, the Cascajal Block precedes the oldest known Zapotec writing by roughly 400 years. This revelation links the Olmec civilization- often considered the “mother culture” of Mesoamerica- to literacy, documenting an unsuspected writing system and revealing a new layer of complexity within their society.

Decoding the Enigmatic Symbols

The block itself weighs approximately 11.5 kilograms (25 lbs) and measures 36 by 21 by 13 centimeters (14.2 x 8.3 x 5.1 inches). Its surface is incised with 62 distinct glyphs, some of which are repeated up to four times. The symbols vary widely; some resemble recognizable natural objects such as maize, pineapple, insects, and fish, while others are abstract boxes or blobs.

Unlike other Mesoamerican writing systems, such as those of the Maya or Zapotec, which typically run in vertical columns, the symbols on the Cascajal Block are arranged in horizontal rows. Researchers have noted that the sequences appear to be conceived as independent units of information, displaying patterns that are hallmarks of true writing, including syntax and language-specific word order. The block’s concave surface suggests it may have been carved repeatedly and erased, an unprecedented practice in ancient Mesoamerica.

Scholarly Debate and Archaeometric Validation

While many experts hailed the discovery as a monumental breakthrough, some archaeologists initially expressed skepticism. Critics pointed out that the block was found out of its original archaeological context in a debris pile, making it difficult to date precisely. Furthermore, the uniqueness of the script and its horizontal arrangement raised questions about its authenticity. Some scholars even proposed alternative interpretations, suggesting the block might represent a special arrangement of sacred objects used in divination rituals rather than a unique script encoding spoken language.

However, subsequent archaeometric analyses have strongly supported the artifact’s authenticity. A 2019 study utilizing polynomial texture mapping (PTM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the block is geologically consistent with serpentinite sourced from known Olmec quarries. The analyses also revealed manufacturing traces and weathering patterns characteristic of Middle Formative Period Olmec artifacts, firmly rooting the Cascajal Block in ancient antiquity.

A Window into Olmec Ritual and Power

The implications of the Cascajal Block extend far beyond linguistics. The Olmecs flourished in the Gulf Coast of Mexico from roughly 1200 to 400 BC, leaving behind colossal basalt heads and elaborate ceremonial centers like San Lorenzo and La Venta. The existence of a writing system suggests a highly organized and stratified society.

Experts theorize that the writing was closely connected with early religious beliefs and ritual practices. The symbols may have been used by emerging kings and elites to validate their exalted positions and legitimize their right to rule. As researchers continue to study the Cascajal Block and hope for the discovery of more texts, these earliest voices of Mesoamerican civilization may one day finally speak to us, unlocking the profound mysteries of the Olmec world.

An exceptional archaeological discovery in central-western Sardinia has brought a rare Bronze Age “Tomb of the Giants” back into the light. Hidden for centuries beneath dense Mediterranean vegetation, the monumental structure at the Carrarzu Iddia archaeological site near Macomer features a unique two-level interior that could reshape our understanding of ancient Nuragic civilization burial rituals. The finding, located at an altitude of 740 meters (2,428 feet), offers a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape, highlighting the strategic importance of this sacred space to its ancient builders.

The excavation and clearing of the site were spearheaded by the two Superintendences of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Sardinia. Built from robust trachyte blocks, the tomb preserves its primary architectural elements, including the burial chamber and the iconic semicircular exedra. This forecourt was not merely decorative; it served as a vital gathering place where Nuragic communities performed ceremonies to honor their ancestors.

A Unique Architectural Mystery

The Carrarzu Iddia tomb stands out from the other 800 identified Giants’ tombs in Sardinia due to its unique architectural element found in the burial chamber. The interior of the tomb has been split into two levels. This bi-level design is an architectural rarity as it is not seen in similar Bronze Age structures.

Archaeologists would like to find out whether the divide and rift serves as a structural operation or bears special symbolic significance concerning burial traditions. The tomb has been ransacked by thieves in the past but archaeologists managed to recover some pieces of pottery from the chamber. These findings indicate that the tomb was active in the early phases of the Nuragic civilization, dating it back to approximately 1800 BC.

A Landscape of Continuous Sacred Use

The newly uncovered tomb is just one piece of a much larger prehistoric puzzle at Carrarzu Iddia. The surrounding archaeological complex is incredibly rich, featuring two proto-nuraghi (early forms of the famous Sardinian stone tower), a sacred well, a residential settlement, and a vast burial ground.

Interestingly, the presence of an older dolmen at the site indicates that the area was used for funerary and ritual purposes long before the Giants’ Tomb was constructed. This continuous occupation from the pre-Nuragic period through the Roman era paints a picture of a highly organized society that deeply valued this elevated, panoramic location. The placement of the tomb on the southern slope of Crastu Littu allowed it to dominate the Macomer plain, reflecting a deliberate territorial strategy by the ancient builders.

Unlocking the Secrets of the Past

The term “Giants’ Tomb” was coined by later inhabitants of Sardinia who believed the massive megalithic stones could only have been moved by beings of superhuman size. However, archaeological evidence confirms these were communal graves for ordinary humans. The evolution from simpler dolmens to these grand structures highlights a significant cultural shift towards monumental architecture and collective burial practices.

Future excavations at Carrarzu Iddia will focus on further exploring the burial chamber and analyzing the recovered pottery. Researchers hope that by studying the unique split-level interior, they can unlock new insights into the religious beliefs and construction techniques of one of Europe’s most enigmatic ancient cultures.

Archaeologists have recently uncovered an incredibly well-preserved mobile dwelling, dated to the Kimak-Kipchak period, at the Baidala burial complex in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan. The site itself is regarded as one of the most important archaeological monuments from this period, when the Kimak Khaganate ruled over this vast swathe of territory, and is now expected to provide significant insights into the history of the Great Eurasian Steppe.

Rise of the Kimak Khaganate

The Kimak or Kimek Khaganate began to emerge as a serious Turkic political power during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. Its territories were principally centered around the Irtysh River and even extended across vast parts of present-day northern, eastern, and central Kazakhstan, the western Altai and neighboring steppe regions. Early traditions trace back to a confederation of seven distinct tribes, the Eymur, Imek, Kipchak, Tatar, Bayandur, Lanikaz and Ajlad. As the tribal confederation expanded through conquest, medieval sources now referred to up to twelve different tribes under the rule of this wide-ranging confederacy. Its supreme ruler began to adopt the royal title of Khagan, marking the true transformation of this alliance into an organized steppe state.

From Steppe Empire to Kipchak Ascendancy

Although livestock continued to remain a central element within Kipchak society, the population wasn’t completely nomadic. Historical and archaeological evidence points to settlements, craft production, trade, writing, and social divisions between the wealthy elites and poorer groups. Caravan routes were also able to connect these lands to the Volga Bulgars and the Samanid territories of Central Asia, the Oghuz, Karluks, and other regional powers adjacent to the Kimak Khaganate. But the Khaganate began to break up and weaken around the turn of the 11th century. The fall of this once mighty nomadic confederacy was brought on by factors such as internal political struggles, the growing independence of the Kipchaks, and large-scale tribal migrations, which contributed to its final collapse. The Kipchaks, in the wake of this political vacuum, were soon able to become the dominant Eurasian steppe power across much of the territory that the Kimaks once ruled.

Searching for the Last Capital of the Kimak Khaganate

According to an analysis of tenth-century Arab maps, the area is believed to have been the site of Imakia, the political center of the Kimak Khaganate, although the findings are not definitive. Imakia also once crucially served as the very political heart of the Kimak Khaganate. Archaeologists led by Timur Smagulov have conducted numerous rescue excavations on this site for more than two decades. During the field season, the researchers continued to work on one of the remaining burial mounds. This set of excavations allowed the researchers to uncover not only the remains of a burial ditch but also the bones of sacrificial animals. Smagulov explained, according to a 2021 ANSA article, that the burial mounds of Kimaks near Baidaly village is of great scientific value:

“Thanks to specific chemical content of soil the woodware, silk clothes and various items made of leather and metal found there were preserved well. A few years ago, the so-called Kimak chariot was unearthed there. It is the only well-preserved sample of mobile dwelling of medieval-era nomads found in the Eurasian steppes.”

A One-of-a-Kind Medieval House on Wheels

Among the expedition’s most important discoveries is the Kimak Chariot, a well-preserved mobile wooden dwelling that was once mounted on a wheeled platform and covered by a tent-like structure resembling a traditional Kazakh yurt. According to archaeologists, no comparable find has yet been identified in the course of professional archaeology on the Eurasian steppe.

This particular archaeological find also included a wooden saddle, stirrups, bits, weapons, jewelry, silk textiles, and other artifacts, offering new insights into the nomadic culture and daily life of these peoples living in the Kimak Khaganate. In past excavations, such “houses on wheels” were only found within written records and certain schematic illustrations. The project’s next crucial phase will focus on further archaeological research at the site. Additionally, there is a critical need to ensure the conservation and restoration of the recovered artifacts.

Finally, plans also involve developing this site into a museum complex and promoting it as one of Kazakhstan’s key historical and cultural heritage landmarks.

New research suggests that the two large structures near the Red Pyramid site at Dahshur, Egypt, are parts of an ancient dam, not stone transport ramps, which is what was previously believed. This indicates that they could be evidence for the use of a complex water management engineering technology, which is about 4,500 years old and was used for constructing one of the world’s greatest ancient monuments.

The team of researchers led by Xavier Landreau of the CEA Paleotechnic Institute employed satellite images, old maps, and digital elevation models for the study, which indicated that these structures were constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu, around 2550 BC. They extend between 600 and 700 meters across the valley, and rather than serving as quarry roads, the researchers argue they display the engineering characteristics of dams designed to retain water, trap sediment, and regulate seasonal floods.

A Sophisticated Two-Stage Hydraulic System

According to this study authors, the eastern dam was most probably the main water-retaining dam while the western dam was presumably a secondary dam. The western dam has been designed in such a manner that its effluent channel is a weir called a ‘duckbill’ spillway, a three-sided effluent chute that can handle large volumes of water without causing any problem. This construction would have lowered the chances for major dam failure during flood episodes and would have therefore signified a major breakthrough in engineering during the Old Kingdom.

The space between the two dams, covering approximately 8.5 hectares, would have acted as an intermediate basin to temporarily hold water and decrease its force. Hydrological modeling indicates that Wadi Dahshur was connected to western tributaries of Wadi Taflah, potentially giving the system access to a catchment area of up to 400 square kilometers. This connection could have captured short but violent flash floods, turning a natural hazard into a controlled resource in an era when the climate was wetter than it is today.

Water’s Role in Pyramid Construction

The most intriguing aspect of the discovery is a diversion channel running parallel to the west face of the Red Pyramid, the world’s first successfully completed smooth-sided pyramid. The researchers suggest this channel may have directed water to areas where it was needed for construction activities. While it would not have allowed boats to sail directly from the Nile, the controlled water supply could have assisted in moving heavy cargo on barges or water-assisted sleds across the plateau.

The water could also have been used to supply construction workers and animals, support mortar preparation, and reduce dust. This theory aligns with growing evidence that ancient Egyptian engineers harnessed hydraulic technology to support their monumental building projects, challenging the traditional view that relied solely on immense manual labor and earthen ramps.

Learning from Past Engineering Failures

The construction of the Dahshur Dams might indicate that trial and error occurred within the engineering history of ancient Egypt. Less than 20 kilometers away is Sadd el-Kafara, the oldest large dam in the world that collapsed due to flooding. The researchers believe that the development of the advancing duckbill spillway system at Dahshur resulted from the earlier construction catastrophe. Therefore, this indicates that the Egyptians were continuing to improve flood control strategies through various forms of experimentation.

Although the Dahshur Dams remain unexcavated and their exact dating has yet to be confirmed, because of the convergence of their geomorphological features and the hydraulic modeling geared to support its original interpretation as the work of man through hydraulic technology, it appears evident that future archeological work may reveal some incredible historical facts hidden deep within the sands of time.

Deep within the limestone walls of Cloggs Cave in southeastern Australia, a remarkable discovery has shed light on ancient spiritual practices. Researchers have uncovered evidence that Aboriginal Australians carried whole grass plants into the cave to burn them for magic, healing, and cursing rituals, a tradition spanning an incredible 25,000 years.

The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology, were made by a team of archaeologists working closely with the GunaiKurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation. By analyzing microscopic plant remains known as phytoliths, the researchers were able to trace the continuous use of the cave by the GunaiKurnai people from the peak of the last Ice Age up to recent times.

Unearthing the Phytolith Skeletons

The study focused on phytoliths, which are tiny, hard silica structures that form within plant tissues and remain long after the plant itself has decayed. Unlike pollen, which can be carried by the wind, phytoliths generally stay where the plant was deposited. Because Cloggs Cave lacks the sunlight and moisture needed for plants to grow inside, any phytoliths found there had to have been brought in from the outside.

According to Dr. Elle Grono, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher at the Australian National University, the research team focused on looking for the half-burnt phytoliths in the ashy layers discovered inside the cave. These layers were formed from the fires lit by humans in the cave and excluded the option of their transportation to the cave by animals such as possums.

The study has proved that the vast majority of the phytoliths, 97% to be precise, belong to the phytoliths of grass plants. More importantly, the phytoliths of grass were extracted from different parts of it, including stems, leaves, flowers, and roots, which mean that the ancestors of GunaiKurnai took the whole grass plant to this remote cave to be burned.

A Sanctuary for the Mulla-Mullung

The continuous burning of these grasses aligns with 19th-century ethnographic accounts and the retained cultural knowledge of the GunaiKurnai community. According to these traditions, powerful learned men and women known as mulla-mullung used caves like Cloggs Cave to perform potent rituals.

These spiritual practitioners would use the ash from the burnt grasses in various ceremonies, smearing it on individuals for healing or cursing. The ash also served a practical and spiritual purpose: by spreading it on the cave floor, the mulla-mullung could track the footprints of anyone—or anything—that entered the cave, including dangerous spirit-beings thought to lurk in the darkness.

The archaeological evidence paints a vivid picture of these ancient practices. In one area of the cave, researchers discovered a 28-centimeter-tall standing stone that had been erected around 2,000 years ago. Surrounding this stone were 73 thin layers of ash, representing 400 years of repeated, deliberate grass burnings.

Reconnecting with Ancestral Traditions

The collaborative nature of the research has been vital in interpreting the findings. GunaiKurnai Elder Uncle Russell Mullett emphasized the importance of these discoveries in understanding the deep history of their people. The mulla-mullung were both respected and feared within the community, acting as doctors who provided cures while also possessing powers that could cause harm.

This latest study builds on previous excavations at Cloggs Cave, which unearthed 12,000-year-old miniature fireplaces containing fat-smeared wooden sticks, further confirming the site’s long-standing use for secluded ceremonies. The presence of burnt phytoliths dating back 25,000 years pushes the timeline of these rituals back to the coldest phase of the last Ice Age, demonstrating an incredible continuity of cultural practice.

As researchers and the GunaiKurnai community continue to work together, the ancient ash layers of Cloggs Cave are slowly giving up their secrets, allowing the rich stories of the Old Ancestors to be told once more.

The source of the 1789 smallpox outbreak that devastated the Indigenous population in Australia has been widely debated. Now, a new modeling study uses mathematical modeling, historical records, archaeology, and demographic data to show the disease’s far-reaching impact on Indigenous Australians. The study rejects the long-standing theory that the disease spread southward from Indonesian (Makassan) traders, and argues that the British First Fleet sent to settle Australia brought smallpox to the continent near Sydney Cove soon after British settlement in 1788.

Outbreak Source Was Vials of Dried Smallpox Scabs

Alan Williams, an archaeologist at the private firm EMM Consulting and co-author of the study, “Stochastic models indicate rapid smallpox spread and mass mortality of Indigenous Australians after colonial exposure,” published July 9th in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, argues that the likely source of the outbreak was vials of dried smallpox scabs that British medics had kept for inoculations. This medical practice was a precursor to smallpox vaccines, invented by Edward Jenner in the 1790s. Previously, historians had maintained that the live smallpox virus could not have survived an 8-month journey from Portsmouth, England, to Botany Bay, south of modern-day Sydney, Australia. However, according to Williams, the vials of smallpox scabs may have been replenished during the voyage when the fleet stopped at either Cape Town, South Africa, or Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, only a few months earlier.

The First Fleet Took Possession of the Continent

The British “First Fleet” to Australia consisted of 11 ships: two naval vessels, six convict transports, and three ships for provisions. The British claimed that, legally, Australia lacked any authority and belonged to no one. Soon after dropping anchor off Botany Bay, the Royal Navy determined that they needed to depart because the land was quite poor and water supplies were insufficient. Consequently, they soon raised anchor and relocated to Sydney Cove in Port Jackson, now part of modern-day Sydney.

Officers raised the British flag at this new location, claiming the entire continent for King and Country. At this point, there were no signs of a smallpox outbreak among nearby native Australian communities, but evidence of the devastating toll emerged in the subsequent decades. Unfortunately, there were no official records of smallpox cases among the native population, only oral histories, journals, or first-person accounts of the disease.

Smallpox Decimated the Indigenous Communities

The smallpox outbreak decimated the Indigenous communities and contributed to the rapid demise of native Australian culture. The study estimated that approximately 220,000 people died from the disease, and that early-20th-century Australian authorities didn’t have an accurate estimate of the Indigenous population when they initially documented historical accounts of the smallpox outbreak.

The new computer modeling traced the spread of the disease, demonstrating that the outbreak could not have spread southward from Indonesian traders. Williams notes, “Among other principal issues, the two regions were separated by thousands of miles of uninhabited desert.”

Further, modeling of the smallpox outbreak in native communities near Port Jackson indicated that the disease outbreak had started from this particular point. Co-author Matthew Cody Nitschke, an expert in computer modeling at Flinders University in Adelaide, maintains that “there is very strong evidence that it was the First Fleet.” At that point in time, disease transmission wasn’t well understood; therefore, the spread of smallpox may have happened by pure accident. The research focuses on identifying the probable origin of the outbreak rather than attributing intentional responsibility.

David Collins was a Royal Marine officer, Judge Advocate of the First Fleet, and one of the earliest historians of colonial Australia. Collins accompanied Governor Arthur Phillip aboard the First Fleet in 1787 and remained in New South Wales during the colony’s formative years. A Second Study Report Corrects Historical Population Data

The study authors are preparing a second report providing evidence that there were between three and five million native Australians when the British First Fleet anchored off Australia - far more than the 300,000 Indigenous Australians estimated in earlier studies, especially in the resource-rich areas making up the North and Southeast of the continent. The former estimate of roughly 300,000 Indigenous Australians is ascribed to a 1930s study, based only on their depleted numbers. Williams explains: “By the time people actually sat down and said how many people were here, we had 100 years of disease, frontier violence, and everything else going on.”

Ann McGrath, a historian at the Australian National University in Canberra who wasn’t involved in the study, was impressed by the methods researchers applied: “The strong interdisciplinary approach of this latest research convincingly refutes this, and it also provides a much expanded estimate of the Indigenous population before 1788.”

For over two thousand years, scholars, geographers, and adventurers have asked the same question: did Odysseus actually sail to real places? Homer’s Odyssey places its hero’s main journey across the Peloponnese and the Ionian Islands, but the fantastical stops along the way — from the cave of the Cyclops to the island of the enchantress Circe — have never been pinned to a map with any certainty. The debate between myth and geography is as alive today as it was in antiquity.

The Odyssey’s main sequence (except for Odysseus’ travels) takes place in the Peloponnese and what is now known as the Ionian Islands (Ithaca and its neighbors). What’s more, incidental allusions to Troy and its house, Phoenicia, Egypt, and Crete suggest that the Iliad’s geographical knowledge is comparable to, if not somewhat superior to, the Odyssey’s.

However, ancient and modern academics disagree on whether any of Odysseus’s stops along the way (after Ismaros and before his return to Ithaca) were real. The geographer Strabo, like many others, was skeptical. He reported what the renowned geographer Eratosthenes had said in the late 3rd century BC: “When you discover the cobbler who sewed up the bag of winds, you will find the site of Odysseus’ wanderings.” But was he right?

The Geographical Location of Odysseus’ Story

The topography of the Apologoi and the location of the Phaeacians’ island of Scheria provide very different challenges than locating Troy, Mycenae, Pylos, and Ithaca. The names of the places and peoples that Odysseus travels to or claims to have visited are not documented in any ancient source other than the Odyssey, either as historical or contemporary information. According to Odysseus’ story, what happens to him in these places falls into the realm of the supernatural or fantastic, although to an extent that is not true of the remainder of the Odyssey.

It is debatable if Odysseus’ story is meant to be considered as factual within the Odyssey’s overall storyline. We don’t know whether the poet imagined the locations on Odysseus’ journey, as well as the routes between them, as actual. Even if the locations were imagined to be actual, the impacts of coastal erosion, silting, and other geological changes over thousands of years can drastically alter the terrain and seascape, making identification difficult.

How much of the Odyssey can be identified with real locations?

The main character, Odysseus, is introduced in the second four books (V–VIII), as he is being liberated from captivity on the island of Ogygia by the nymph Calypso. He is shipwrecked and lands on the shores of Scheria, the Phaeacian homeland. In Books IX-XII, Odysseus tells the Phaeacians about the perilous journey he and his crew took in search of the home, including their encounters with the lotus-eaters, Laestrygonians, and the sorceress Circe; their narrow escape from the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus; their ordeal navigating between Scylla and Charybdis; and the final shipwreck in which Odysseus is the only one who washes up on the shores of Ogygia.

Finally, in Books XIII–XXIV, the poem’s second half, Odysseus returns to Ithaca, where he encounters unexpected hurdles and danger. Before devising a convoluted plot to dispose of the suitors, he meets with his protector-goddess Athena and reveals himself to his trusty swineherd Eumaeus and subsequently to Telemachus. During Odysseus’ absence, Penelope defied the pestering of over a hundred suitors, who stayed in Odysseus’ house, eating, drinking, and carousing while waiting for her to choose amongst them. Odysseus, with the help of Telemachus, Eumaeus, and Philoetius, kills them all to reconnect with his wife (a servant and a cowherd).

How much of the Odyssey is fantasy?

The bulk of classical scholars today undoubtedly believe that Odysseus’ landfalls should be viewed as fictitious sites. In his approach to the subject, the modern Greek Homerist Ioannis Kakridis can be compared to Eratosthenes. He claimed that the Odyssey is a poem rather than a travelogue. To get a fast overview of Kakridis’ viewpoints, it is pointless to try to find the locations described in Odysseus’ narrative on a map; we can’t mix the Odyssey narrative with history unless we believe in gods, giants, and monsters.

Although Kakridis concedes that one might wonder what genuine locales inspired these imagined settings, one must keep in mind that geography is not Odysseus’ (as narrator) or the poet’s primary interest. Similarly, Merry and Riddell state in their late-19th century school edition of the Odyssey that we are in a wonderland, and that we shall look in vain for anything to do with maps in these books.

Identifications from the past

Ancient sources offer a plethora of interpretations of Odysseus’ travels, as well as a complicated web of traditions that interact in diverse ways. In general, there are two dominating trends. One is the Euhemerist narratives, which rewrote mythical stories without the fantastic parts and were often viewed as restoring historical records in the process. The other mirrors the customs of foundation myths, in which tales of a city or institution being built during Odysseus’ travels frequently became political symbols. Some similarities exist between the two groups. The key differences between them are how the identifications were passed down through the generations and what they were used for.

The following are the most common identifications, which are rarely challenged in ancient sources:

Sicily is the land of the Cyclopes. Laestrygonians’ homeland to Sicily. The Aeolian island is one or more of the Aeolian Islands off the north coast of Sicily. Scheria, Phaeacian Land is equal to Corcyra (modern Corfu), off the coasts of Greece and Albania. Ogygia, the nymph Calypso’s island is Gaulos, a modern-day Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago.

Accounts by Euhemerists

Writers on antiquarian subjects, geographers, scholars, and historians are all examples of euhemerist descriptions. The most important ancient sources are Strabo, a first-century geographer who provides information about Eratosthenes’ and Polybius’ studies into the topic; and Dictys of Crete, a novelization of the Trojan Battle that many later writers interpreted as an accurate historical chronicle of the war. The origins of this ritual can be traced back to the 5th century BC.

The country of the lotus-eaters is identified by Herodotus as a headland in the territory of the Gindanes tribe in Libya, and Thucydides relates the above-mentioned accepted identifications. Herodotus and Thucydides do not intentionally euhemerize; instead, they just accept local tales at face value because of their political significance at the time.

In Alexandrian Hellenistic scholarship, euhemerist accounts grow more dominant. Callimachus correctly identifies Scheria as Corcyra on Corfu, as well as Calypso’s island as Gaulos (modern Gozo, part of Malta). In his epic the Argonautica, his disciple Apollonius of Rhodes also names Scheria with Corcyra.

For over a century, scientists have debated the purpose of weapons found in the burial chambers of ancient Egyptian royal women. Were these items merely ceremonial, or did the princesses actually wield them? A bioarchaeological reassessment of five royal mummies from the Middle Kingdom has definitively shown that some ancient Egyptian princesses born 4,000 years ago were, in fact, highly skilled archers.

The study, recently published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology, focuses on six royal individuals discovered in the 1890s at Dahshur, a significant necropolis complex known for its pyramids and shaft tombs. The mummies, which had been lost for years, were rediscovered in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo during a curation project in 2020.

The Royal Sisters of Dahshur

Among the rediscovered remains were four sisters, all daughters of the pharaoh Amenemhat II, who ruled during the 12th Dynasty. The sisters - Princess Ita, Princess Khenmet, Princess Itaweret, and an anonymous woman provisionally identified as Princess Sathathormeryt - were buried in matching underground chambers. Surprisingly, they were interred with items traditionally associated with men, such as bows and arrows. Princess Ita’s coffin even contained an exquisite dagger. Similar regalia accompanied the other two royals evaluated in the study: Princess Noub-Hotep and King Hor.

Although the soft tissue of the mummies had turned to powder and their skulls were lost in the early 1900s, the remaining bones were remarkably well-preserved. This allowed researchers to conduct a thorough osteological analysis, estimating the individuals’ age at death, height, and sex, while also uncovering evidence of illnesses and physical trauma.

Pronounced Muscle Attachments Reveal Active Lives

The analysis revealed that these royal women led highly active lives. Dr. Zeinab Hashesh of Beni-Suef University, the lead author of the study, noted that “Members of the royal family, especially the women, were active participants in skilled, physically demanding activities such as archery and hunting.” This conclusion is strongly supported by the robust muscle attachments on the princesses’ bones, which correspond directly to the weapons discovered in their tombs.

For instance, Princess Ita, a young woman aged between 28 and 34, exhibited strong upper-body muscle attachments, suggesting she habitually used weapons like maces or daggers. Princess Itaweret, aged between 20 and 34, survived broken ribs and foot fractures, and her skeleton clearly indicates she was a skilled archer. The researchers found pronounced development in the upper limbs of these individuals, correlating to repetitive, high-intensity actions such as pulling a bowstring or stabilizing a weapon.

These findings provide compelling evidence that the weapons buried with the women were not merely symbolic gifts but practical tools they actively used throughout their lives.

Injuries, Infections, and Royal Vulnerability

While their royal status afforded them privileges, it did not shield them from the harsh realities of life in ancient Egypt. The study uncovered evidence of various injuries, such as Princess Itaweret’s broken ribs, likely caused by a blow or a fall. “These injuries were most likely caused by accidents, falls, hard blows, or other impacts linked to an active lifestyle, whether through hunting, military training, or other demanding activities,” Dr. Hashesh explained. Remarkably, the injuries healed well, suggesting the princesses had access to advanced medical care for their time.

However, the researchers also found evidence of persistent infections and possible nutritional deficiencies among the royals. Furthermore, the sisters shared rare spinal abnormalities, indicating that their parents and wider family were closely related, a common practice among Egyptian royalty to maintain the purity of the bloodline.

Reconstructing Ancient Lives

The recent bioarchaeological reassessment of these royal mummies highlights the importance of re-evaluating historical collections using modern scientific techniques. While the loss of the princesses’ skulls limits some analyses, the researchers hope to conduct further studies, such as stable isotope analysis, to shed more light on their diets and potential nutritional deficiencies.

Ultimately, the goal is to move beyond simply identifying the Dahshur royals and to reconstruct their full life stories, including their health, familial relationships, and even their political roles. As Dr. Hashesh eloquently stated, “While archaeologists have long focused on preserving these treasures, the people themselves were often forgotten. Our study seeks to change that.”

1. New Human Ancestor Species Discovered in Ethiopia

Scientists made a groundbreaking discovery in Ethiopia’s Afar region that revolutionized our understanding of human evolution. The research team, led by Arizona State University, uncovered 13 fossilized teeth belonging to a previously unknown species of Australopithecus that coexisted with the earliest members of our own genus Homo between 2.6 and 2.8 million years ago.

2. Million-Year-Old Chinese Skull Rewrites Human Evolution Timeline

A remarkable million-year-old skull discovered in China has shattered long-held beliefs about when modern humans and their closest relatives diverged from common ancestors. The Yunxian 2 skull, originally excavated in 1990 from Hubei Province, was digitally reconstructed using sophisticated CT imaging techniques, revealing that it belongs to the mysterious Homo longi lineage—closer to Denisovans than to Homo erectus as previously thought.

The research, published in Science, suggests that major human lineages diverged much earlier than previously believed.
